Purpose The purpose of our study was to investigate the histological, histochemical and ultrastructural aspects of the proximal femoral growth plate in slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). Methods Eight core biopsies of the proximal femoral growth plate were performed during in situ epiphysiodesis in patients with SCFE that was at the pre-slipping stage in two cases and at the mild slipping stage (Southwick angle < 30°) in six cases. After fixation, the specimens were processed for either histological or histochemical or ultrastructural studies. Results The proximal femoral growth plate was thicker than normal in the SCFE cases, and the 3:1 ratio between the thickness of the resting zone and the other zones of the plate was reversed. Chondrocytes of the proliferating, maturation, hypertrophic and degenerating zones were arranged in large clusters rather than in columns, which were separated by loose fibrillary septae that appeared moderately alcian blue positive and metachromatic. The collagen fibrils of the longitudinal septae were uniformly thin, measuring about 200 Å, whereas in the normal plate collagen fibrils were in the range of 300 to 1200 Å in thickness. Chondrocytes were elongated and smaller than normal, with a dark cytoplasm. In the degenerating zone, mineralisation of the longitudinal and transversal septae was scanty and enchondral ossification was impaired, with a few small osteoblasts forming thin bone trabeculae on the cartilage septae of the degenerating zone. Conclusion In SCFE, the proximal femoral growth plate undergoes several histological, histochemical and ultrastructural changes that precede slipping of the epiphysis since they are already present at a pre-slipping stage of the disease. The loss of solidity of the extracellular matrix and the disarrangement of the normal architecture of the physis very likely cause the consequent slipping of the proximal femoral epiphysis. A fault containing two asperities with different strengths is considered. The fault is embedded in a shear zone subject to a constant strain rate by the motions of adjacent tectonic plates. The fault is modelled as a discrete dynamical system where the average values of stress, friction and slip on each asperity are considered. The state of the fault is described by three variables: the slip deficits of the asperities and the viscoelastic deformation. The system has four dynamic modes, for which analytical solutions are calculated. The relationship between the state of the fault before a seismic event and the sequence of slipping modes in the event is enlightened. Since the moment rate depends on the number and sequence of slipping modes, the knowledge of the source function of an earthquake constrains the orbit of the system in the phase space. If the source functions of a larger number of consecutive earthquakes were known, the orbit could be constrained more and more and its evolution could be predicted with a smaller uncertainty. The model is applied to the 1964 Alaska earthquake, which was the effect of the failure of two asperities and for which a remarkable post-seismic relaxation has been observed in the subsequent decades. The evolution of the system after the 1964 event depends on the state from which the event was originated, that is constrained by the observed moment rate. A fault system made of two segments or asperities subject to a constant strain rate is considered. The fault is modelled as a discrete dynamical system made of two blocks coupled by a Maxwell spring dashpot element and pulled at constant velocity on a rough plane. The long-term behaviour of the fault is studied by calculating the orbits of the system in the phase space. The model shows the role of viscoelastic relaxation in the Earth's crust in controlling the occurrence times of earthquakes. If a viscoelastic coupling is present, earthquakes are anticipated or delayed with respect to the elastic case. The limit cycles made of two alternate asper- ity failures, which are observed in the case of purely elastic coupling, are no longer produced. The model is applied to the 1964 Alaska earthquake, which was the effect of the failure of two asperities and for which a remarkable post-seismic relaxation has been observed in the subsequent decades. A fault with two asperities is modelled as a system made of two blocks coupled by a spring and sliding on a plane under the same values of static and dynamic friction. An analytical solution is given for the simultaneous motion of the blocks and the corresponding orbits are plotted in the phase space. It is proven that, whichever the initial state is, the long-term behaviour of the system is one of an infinite number of limit cycles, characterized by a particular pattern of forces. The region where the system is located when the blocks are stationary can be divided into narrow stripes corresponding to different orbits of the points belonging to them. This implies that the system is sensitive to perturbations and has relevant implications for a fault, which is subject to stress transfers from earthquakes generated by neighbouring faults. In this case, the fault may experience a larger earthquake, with the simultaneous failure of the two asperities, which restores a stress distribution compatible with periodic behaviour. The seismic moment associated with simultaneous asperity failure is always greater than the maximum value that can be released in a limit cycle. The behaviour of seismogenic faults is generally investigated under the assumption that they are subject to a constant strain rate. We consider the effect of a slowly variable strain rate on the recurrence times of earthquakes generated by a single fault. To this aim a spring-block system is employed as a low-order analog of the fault. Two cases are considered: a sinusoidal oscillation in the driver velocity and a monotonic change from one velocity value to another. In the first case, a study of the orbit of the system in the state space suggests that the seismic activity of the equivalent fault is organized into cycles that include several earthquakes and repeat periodically. Within each cycle the recurrence times oscillate about an average value equal to the recurrence period for constant strain rate. In the second case, the recurrence time changes gradually from the value before the transition to the value following it. Asymptotic solutions are also given, approximating the case when the amplitude of the oscillation or of the monotonic change is much smaller than the average driver velocity and the period of oscillation or the duration of the transition is much longer than the recurrence times of block motions. If the system is not isolated but is subject to perturbations in stress, the perturbation anticipates or delays the subsequent earthquake. By means of a 2D finite-element procedure, we tested how heterogeneities at the scale of seismogenic fault affect the displacement. We defined one or more slip distributions for two typical normal-faulting earthquakes in the Central Apennines, computed the displacement occurred within different structures including lateral heterogeneities, and compared the different displacement profiles to isolate the effect of the crustal structure. To understand at what magnitude the heterogeneities affect the observation significantly, we compared the predicted coseismic displacement with GPS and DInSAR data for the Colfiorito 1997 earthquake. We find that heterogeneities significantly affect the observable horizontal coseismic displacement for the larger magnitudes, whereas for smaller quakes, they affect horizontal displacement close to the fault trace only. Okada (1992) provided expressions for the displacement and strain fields due to a finite rectangular source in an elastic, homogeneous and isotropic half-space. Starting with these results, we applied the correspondence principle of linear viscoelasticity to derive the quasi-static displacement, strain and stress fields in a viscoelastic, homogeneous and isotropic half-space. We assume that the medium deforms viscoelastically with respect to both the shear and the normal stresses but keeps a constant bulk modulus; in particular, the shear modulus relaxes as Maxwell fluid. We presented the viscoelastic effect on displacement, displacement gradient and stress fields, for a choice of parameter values. The viscoelastic effect due to the sudden dislocation reaches a limit value after about 10 times the Maxwell time. The expressions obtained here provide tools for the study of viscoelastic relaxation of lithosphere associated with seismic and volcanic phenomena. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is generally agreed that the occurrence of seismic sequences implies a kind of interaction between different fault segments. The coseismic stress transfer produced by each dislocation is the most obvious component of such an interaction. However, the time intervals elapsing between subsequent events in a sequence indicate that the coseismic stress is not sufficient to trigger other seismic events by itself. We investigate the possibility that the coseismic stress field may induce flow of pore fluids, altering the pore pressure distribution in the region. Since the crust is a fluid-saturated medium at many locations, we consider the crust as a poroelastic solid. Because poroelastic materials exhibit time-dependent stress fields, we examine if this behaviour can explain the triggering of aftershocks. We consider some available analytical solutions for a semi-infinite plane fault. Permeable and impermeable dislocation planes are considered. We compare the solutions for a poroelastic medium with those for a porous medium, and evaluate the effect of the coupling between deformation and fluid diffusion. We find that the Coulomb stress changes due to the main shock may be initially negative at some locations, but become positive as pore fluids are redistributed. These changes are significantly large. If the crust were to behave as an isotropic, fluid-filled, poro-elastic medium, as we assume here, Coulomb stress triggering by means of pore fluid diffusion is likely an important mechanism for aftershock generation over distances and widths of about 2.5 and 0.5 fault lengths, respectively. These distance ranges are smaller than those predicted by previous models which disregarded the mechanical interactions between elastic deformation and pore fluid diffusion. During 1997 several slow earthquakes have been recorded by a geodetic interferometer located beneath Gran Sasso, central Italy. The strain rise times of the events range from tens to thousands of seconds and strain amplitudes are of the order of 10−9. Amplitudes scale with the square root of the rise time and this suggests a diffusive behaviour of the slip propagation along the fault. In this work, we develop a model in which slip diffusion is the result of the presence of a gouge layer between fault faces, with a viscoplastic rheology. The fluid velocity field in the gouge layer diffuses in the directions of fault length and fault thickness, with different characteristic times. This model reproduces the relation between amplitude and rise time of measured strain signals. Synthetic straingrams, obtained for a horizontally layered, flat Earth and a source located a few kilometres from the instrument, are in agreement with observed signals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

— The study of surface deformation due to seismic activity is often made using dislocations with uniform slip and simple geometries. A better modeling of coseismic and postseismic surface displacements can be obtained by using dislocations with variable slip and nonregular shapes. This is consistent with the asperity model of fault surfaces, assuming a friction distribution on faults made of locked zones with much higher friction than surrounding zones. In this paper we consider the 1997–1998 Colfiorito seismic sequence. The coseismic surface displacements in the Colfiorito zone are used in order to infer the slip distribution on the fault surface at different stages of the sequence. The displacement field has been modeled varying the slip distribution on the fault, and comparing the deformation observed by SAR and GPS techniques with model results. The slip distribution is calculated by Monte Carlo simulations on a normal fault with the dip angle equal to 40°. A good approximation is obtained by using square asperity units of 1.5×1.5 km2. In the first stage, we employed a simplified model with uniform slip, in which each asperity unit is allowed to slip a constant amount or not to slip at all, and in the second stage, we evaluate the slip distribution in the dislocation area determined by the Monte Carlo inversion: in this case we allow unit cells to undergo different values of slip in order to refine the initial dislocation model. The results show that the 1997 seismic events of the sequence can be modeled by irregular dislocations, obtaining a good fit to the DInSAR and GPS observations. The model also confirms the results of previous studies by a different methodology, defining the distribution of asperities on the fault plane using the fault geometry, the geodetic data and the seismic moment of the 1997–1998 Colfiorito seismic sequence. Furthermore, the analysis of 1997 aftershocks in the seismogenic region shows a strong correlation between most events and the asperity distribution, which can be considered as an independent test of the validity of the model. An analytical solution is derived for the size reduction of a spherical magma chamber cooling by conduction. The use of moving boundary conditions and the constraint of a spherical symmetry allow one to ignore the details of the heat redistribution processes which take place within the magma chamber. The dependence of the solution on the initial conditions is investigated. A simple solution is found for short time, which is shown to be valid for times long enough to make it useful in the volcanological context. Moreover, the general solution confirms that the hydrothermal contribution to heat transfer in Phlegraean Fields cannot be extremely important. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
