Objective: To investigate the efficacy and safety of the 'smart' tracheal occlusion (Smart-TO) device in fetal lambs with diaphragmatic hernia (DH).Methods: DH was created in fetal lambs on gestational day 70 (term, 145 days). Fetuses were allocated to either pregnancy continuation until term (DH group) or fetoscopic endoluminal tracheal occlusion (TO), performed using the Smart-TO balloon on gestational day 97 (DH + TO group). On gestational day 116, the presence of the balloon was confirmed on ultrasound, then the ewe was walked around a 3.0-Tesla magnetic resonance scanner for balloon deflation, which was confirmed by ultrasound immediately afterwards. At term, euthanasia was performed and the fetus retrieved. Efficacy of occlusion was assessed by the lung-to-body-weight ratio (LBWR) and lung morphometry. Safety parameters included tracheal side effects assessed by morphometry and balloon location after deflation. The unoccluded DH lambs served as a comparator.Results: Six fetuses were included in the DH group and seven in the DH + TO group. All balloons deflated successfully and were expelled spontaneously from the airways. In the DH + TO group, in comparison to controls, the LBWR at birth was significantly higher (1.90 (interquartile range (IQR), 1.43-2.55) vs 1.07 (IQR, 0.93-1.46); P = 0.005), while on lung morphometry, the alveolar size was significantly increased (mean linear intercept, 47.5 (IQR, 45.6-48.1) vs 41.9 (IQR, 38.8-46.1) μm; P = 0.03); whereas airway complexity was lower (mean terminal bronchiolar density, 1.56 (IQR, 1.0-1.81) vs 2.23 (IQR, 2.14-2.40) br/mm2 ; P = 0.005). Tracheal changes on histology were minimal in both groups, but more noticeable in fetal lambs that underwent TO than in unoccluded lambs (tracheal score, 2 (IQR, 1-3) vs 0 (0-1); P = 0.03).Conclusions: In fetal lambs with DH, TO using the Smart-TO balloon is effective and safe. In this paper a semiclassical quantization method is developed whose formulation and application is simple, general and accurate. We call this method semiclassical quantization by circuit counting (SQCC). SQCC is based upon evaluating the action integral along a trajectory until it undergoes a near recurrence. Several near recurrences are used to obtain a set of independent equations which can then be inverted to yield the actions for the trajectory. Once the actions are obtained a linear extrapolation is used to calculate semiclassical energies. We apply the method to two model systems: (1) three uncoupled Morse oscillators and (2) a realistic three degree of freedom model of SO2. SQCC is found to work very well for these systems. In this paper we extend the arbitrary trajectory approach to semiclassical quantization developed in an earlier paper. A numerical method is developed and tested that uses a second-order correction to extrapolate several energy eigenvalues from a single trajectory. The method is based upon finding the second-order action derivatives of the Hamiltonian. We test the scheme on a Hamiltonian previously analyzed by Swimm and Delos. We find that about 100 energy eigenvalues can be fairly accurately obtained with three reference trajectories (24 total trajectories). Classical resonances arising from the interaction of three nonlinearly coupled oscillators are studied from both a theoretical and numerical perspective. In particular, our study focuses on ternary classical resonances defined by n1ω1 +n2ω2 -n3ω3 =0. We discuss some of the experimental and quantum mechanical consequences of binary and ternary classical resonances (e.g., Fermi resonances and vibration–rotation coupling). Numerically we show that it is possible to construct a three-dimensional map such that ternary classical resonances can be systematically found. Theoretically, we show that canonical transformations exist between resonant and nonresonant motion. These transformations predict various structural features of the three-dimensional numerical maps which are subsequently observed in a model numerical calculation. Finally we argue that the methods and ideas presented in this paper are generic and can be used for more general systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We examine the classical limit (h→0) of the semiclassical spectral quantization method (SQ) proposed in an earlier publication. Using the classical limit analysis, equations are derived which should improve the accuracy of SQ for finite h. Our analysis is focused on problems involving coupled and uncoupled oscillator systems. Special attention is given to the situation when the unperturbed oscillators are anharmonic. Application to cases where classical resonances are present are also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The reactive island (RI) theory of chemical reaction rates is modified so that a precise knowledge of the transition state is not required. This revised form of the theory is applied to a realistic two (J=0) and three degree of freedom model (J≠0) of the isomerization HCN⇄CNH. The detailed reaction dynamics is examined and understood in terms of the cylindrical manifolds embedded in the molecular phase space. Of special interest we find a T-shaped conformer in addition to the HCN and CNH moieties at J=0. Rates of unimolecular decay are examined by numerical simulation and theory. Good agreement is found between theory and simulation except for a case where a substantial amount of phase space is consumed by regular motion. In all cases studied, the theory is a significant improvement over the Rice–Ramsperger–Kassel–Marcus (RRKM) theory, which is up to three orders of magnitude too large. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Crop species exhibit an astounding capacity for environmental adaptation, but genetic bottlenecks resulting from intense selection for adaptation and productivity can lead to a genetically vulnerable crop. Improving the genetic resiliency of temperate maize depends upon the use of tropical germplasm, which harbors a rich source of natural allelic diversity. Here, the adaptation process was studied in a tropical maize population subjected to 10 recurrent generations of directional selection for early flowering in a single temperate environment in Iowa, USA. We evaluated the response to this selection across a geographical range spanning from 43.05° (Wl) to 18.00° (PR) latitude. The capacity for an all-tropical maize population to become adapted to a temperate environment was revealed in a marked fashion: on average, families from generation 10 flowered 20 days earlier than families in generation 0, with a nine-day separation between the latest generation 10 family and the earliest generation 0 family. Results suggest that adaptation was primarily due to selection on genetic main effects tailored to temperature-dependent plasticity in flowering time. Genotype-by-environment interactions represented a relatively small component of the phenotypic variation in flowering time, but were sufficient to produce a signature of localized adaptation that radiated latitudinally, in partial association with daylength and temperature, from the original location of selection. Furthermore, the original population exhibited a maladaptive syndrome including excessive ear and plant heights along with later flowering; this was reduced in frequency by selection for flowering time. By analogy to transistors in classical electronic circuits, quantum optical switches are important elements of quantum circuits and quantum networks. Operated at the fundamental limit where a single quantum of light or matter controls another field or material system, such a switch may enable applications such as long-distance quantum communication, distributed quantum information processing and metrology, and the exploration of novel quantum states of matter. Here, by strongly coupling a photon to a single atom trapped in the near field of a nanoscale photonic crystal cavity, we realize a system in which a single atom switches the phase of a photon and a single photon modifies the atom's phase. We experimentally demonstrate an atom-induced optical phase shift that is nonlinear at the two-photon level, a photon number router that separates individual photons and photon pairs into different output modes, and a single-photon switch in which a single 'gate' photon controls the propagation of a subsequent probe field. These techniques pave the way to integrated quantum nanophotonic networks involving multiple atomic nodes connected by guided light. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wisconsin Quality Synthetic (WQS) is a maize population that has undergone four cycles of S2-topcross selection for increased silage yield and feed quality. This study evaluated forage yield and quality for each cycle of WQS per se as well as testcrosses to two Stiff Stalk-type testers. Linear improvement was seen in whole plant yield, stover yield, and whole-plant quality both in the population per se and in testcrosses. stover quality has not improved through selection. Starch content has increased while crude protein has decreased. Milk yields on a Mg dry matter and hectare basis have increased with selection. Changes in silage dry matter yield have been greater on a percent basis than changes in silage quality, suggesting that the current selection protocol of selecting S2-top crosses first for yield then for quality may be more efficient at improving yield than quality. Maize hybrids with improved stover yield and quality are needed to support the emerging cellulosic biofuels industry. Knowledge of the genetic variation, covariation, and genetic architecture of agronomic and cell wall traits will help maize breeders improve relevant traits through selective breeding and genetic engineering. We utilized the maize intermated B73 × Mo17 (IBM) recombinant inbred line (AlL) population to map quantitative trait loci (QTL) and to evaluate the genetic relationships among traits relevant for cellulosic biofuel production, including grain yield, stover yield, neutral detergent fiber digestibility (NDFD), and glucan, xylan, and hgnm concentration. Intermated B73 × Mo17 AlL were evaluated per se and as testcrosses to W604S to assess how well performance and QTL effects correspond between inbreds and hybrids. There were no unfavorable correlations between agronomic and cell wall traits within the testcross progeny. Polysaccharide content was either positively correlated to, or not correlated to, NDFD, indicating that increasing both carbohydrate content and convertibility is feasible. Quantitative trait loci were identified for all traits evaluated, but few QTL were in common between inbred per se and testcross evaluations despite moderate to high genotypic correlations between progeny types. This study provides information that will support the development of dual-purpose maize hybrids that are high in grain yield and also high in yield of digestible cellulosic feedstock. The use of maize (Zea mays L.) stover as a feedstock for cellulosic biofuels production will create demand for maize hybrids with greater stover yield. It is expected that grain yield will remain the most critical trait and continue to drive hybrid sales, requiring that any increases in stover yield be made without sacrificing grain yield potential. The objective of this review was to determine the relationship between grain yield, harvest index, and stover yield to illuminate the potential for increasing both grain and stover yield through breeding. In contrast to what has been observed in other crops, gains in maize grain yield over time in the U.S. Corn Belt have been accompanied by increases in stover yield. Where recurrent selection on grain yield has been most successful, stover yield also increased while harvest index has been relatively stable. The opposite situation has been observed in tropical germplasm, where gains in grain yield have been associated with increasing harvest index and relatively constant biomass yield. We expect that stover yield of Corn Belt hybrids will continue to increase along with grain yield, resulting in future hybrids capable of producing both more food and biofeedstock for energy production. If maize breeders pursue selection for increased stover yield, we found no evidence to suggest that breeding for stover yield will necessarily reduce rate of gain in grain yield. Maize (Zea mays L.) stover has been identified as an important feedstock for the production of cellulosic ethanol. Our objectives were to measure hybrid effect and combining ability patterns of traits related to cellulosic ethanol production, determine if germplasm and mutations used for silage production would also be beneficial for feedstock production, and examine relationships between traits that are relevant to selective breeding. We evaluated grain hybrids, germplasm bred for silage production, brown-midrib hybrids, and a leafy hybrid. Yield and composition traits were measured in four environments. There was a 53% difference in stover yield between commercial grain hybrids that were equivalent for other production- related traits. Silage germplasm may be useful for increasing stover yield and reducing lignin concentration. We found much more variation among hybrids than either in vitro ruminal fermentability or polysaccharide concentration. Correlations between traits were mostly favorable or nonexistent. Our results suggest that utilizing standing genetic variation of maize in breeding programs could substantially increase the amount of biofuels produced from stover per unit area of land. Soil water-logging can cause severe damage to soybean [ Glycine max (L.) Merr.] and results in significant yield reduction. The objective of this study was to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) that condition water-logging tolerance (WLT) in soybean. Two populations with 103 and 67 F6:11 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) from A5403 × Archer (Population 1) and P9641 × Archer (Population 2), respectively, were used as the mapping populations. The populations were evaluated for WLT in manually flooded fields in 2001, 2002, and 2003. Significant variation was observed for WLT among the lines in the two populations. No transgressive tolerant segregants were observed in either population. Broad-sense heritability of WLT for populations 1 and 2 were 0.59 and 0.43, respectively. The tolerant and sensitive RILs from each population were selected to create a tolerant bulk and a sensitive bulk, respectively. The two bulks and the parents of each population were tested with 912 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers to select candidate regions on the linkage map that were associated with WLT. Markers from the candidate regions were used to genotype the RILs in both populations. Both single marker analysis (SMA) and composite interval mapping (CIM) were used to identify QTL for WLT. Seventeen markers in Population 1 and 15 markers in Population 2 were significantly ( p <0.0001) associated with WLT in SMA. Many of these markers were linked to Rps genes or QTL conferring resistance to Phytophthora sojae Kaufmann and Gerdemann. Five markers, Satt599 on linkage group (LG) A1, Satt160, Satt269, and Satt252 on LG F, and Satt485 on LG N, were significant ( p <0.0001) for WLT in both populations. With CIM, a WLT QTL was found close to the marker Satt385 on LG A1 in Population 1 in 2003. This QTL explained 10% of the phenotypic variation and the allele that increased WLT came from Archer. In Population 2 in 2002, a WLT QTL was located near the marker Satt269 on LG F. This QTL explained 16% of the phenotypic variation and the allele that increased WLT also came from Archer. The open-pollinated maize (Zea mays subsp. mays) population Golden Glow [GG(MP)] provides excellent material for the study of morphological and genetic changes associated with selection for prolificacy. Late generations of the GG(MP), when planted at low densities, resemble the architecture of teosinte (Z. mays subsp. parviglumis), the ancestor of maize. Our objectives were (i) to identify molecular markers linked to chromosomal regions that influenced prolificacy and related morphological traits, (ii) to determine whether genes previously shown to influence branching patterns in maize were associated with quantitative trait loci (QTLs) influencing these traits, and (iii) to determine whether epistatic interactions among putative QTLs influenced prolificacy and correlated traits. A mapping population was developed from the cross of inbred A679 and a highly prolific S1 plant from Cycle 23 of GG(MP). Simple sequence repeat (SSR) and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers were combined for the linkage map construction. Thirty-three QTLs were found for 14 of the 16 traits analyzed. A region located on Linkage Group 1 (LG 1) shared similarities with the pattern of development suggested for the teosinte branchedi (thi) mutant. This suggests that genetic control of prolificacy and associated traits in GG(MP) may resemble the genetic changes underlying branching morphology that occurred during maize domestication. Prolificacy (the potential to produce ear shoots at multiple nodes on the main stalk) has been under selection since the early domestication of maize (Zea mays subsp. snays) from teosinte (Z. mays subsp. parviglumis). Until the early part of the 20th century, before mechanization, human selection may have favored single-eared maize because it facilitated hand-harvesting. Prolificacy, however, has the potential to increase stress tolerance under intensive management. Our objectives were (i) to assess variation for prolificacy and 15 related morphological traits in a population of 194 F3 families derived from inbred line A679 and a highly prolific S1 plant from the cultivar Golden Glow after 23 cycles of mass selection for prolificacy; and (ii) to determine relationships among traits and to infer which ones appear to be controlled by similar genetic factors. Traits were evaluated with two replications in three field environments. The population varied significantly for all traits and most traits had relatively high heritabilities (>0.80). Some traits were highly correlated, and two main groups were identified. These groups involved traits mostly associated with either the activity of axillary meristems, or intercalary meristems. In general, the correlations of traits across these two groups were insignificant or of lesser magnitude than within groups, suggesting that common genetic factors might be influencing some of these morphological traits.
