Background: Historically, hepatitis C virus (HCV) was difficult to treat among people with HIV. However, treatment with direct‐acting antivirals (DAAs) results in 90%–95% of people being cured. There is a need to understand why a proportion of people are not cured. We aimed to examine characteristics that may indicate an increased probability of unsuccessful DAA HCV treatment. Methods: Data were from the International Collaboration on Hepatitis C Elimination in HIV Cohorts. People who commenced DAA HCV treatment between 2014 and 2019 were included. Unsuccessful treatment was defined as a positive HCV RNA test at a person's first RNA test at least 4 weeks (SVR4+) following the end of treatment. Multivariable mixed‐effects logistic regression was used to examine characteristics associated with unsuccessful treatment. Results: Of 4468 people who commenced DAA treatment, 4098 (91.7%) had an SVR test 4+ weeks following the end of treatment, 207 (5%) of whom were unsuccessfully treated. Compared to a CD4+ cell count > 500 cells/mm3, cell counts < 200 (aOR 1.81, 95%CI 1.00–3.29) and between 200 and 349 (aOR 1.95, 95%CI 1.30–2.93) were associated with increased odds of unsuccessful treatment. Among 1921 people with data on injection drug use in the 12 months prior to treatment, there was some evidence that recent injection drug use was associated with increased odds of unsuccessful treatment; however, this was not statistically significant (aOR 1.67, 95%CI 0.99–2.82). Conclusions: The overwhelming majority of people were successfully treated for HCV. Overall, 5% of those with an SVR4+ test were unsuccessfully treated; this was more likely among people with evidence of immunodeficiency and those who reported recently injecting drugs. People with a history of injecting drug use are a priority for eliminating blood-borne viruses and sexually transmissible infections. Identifying them for disease surveillance in electronic medical records (EMRs) is challenged by sparsity of predictors. This study introduced a novel approach to phenotype people who have injected drugs using structured EMR data and interactive human-in-the-loop methods. We iteratively trained random forest classifiers removing important features and adding new positive labels each time. The initial model achieved 92.7% precision and 93.5% recall. Models maintained >90% precision and recall after nine iterations, revealing combinations of less obvious features influencing predictions. Applied to approximately 1.7 million patients, the final model identified 128,704 (7.7%) patients as potentially having injected drugs, beyond the 50,510 (2.9%) with known indicators of injecting drug use. This process produced explainable models that revealed otherwise hidden combinations of predictors, offering an adaptive approach to addressing the inherent challenge of inconsistently missing data in EMRs. Background: Social distancing restrictions and the suspension of in-person treatment and support contributed to an increase in postnatal depression during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Creative health interventions can help to alleviate anxiety and depression, with studies showing that singing is particularly effective for supporting the mental health of new mothers. We adapted an in-person group singing programme (Breathe Melodies for Mums (M4M)) to online delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic to support the mental health of new mothers, and, in a feasibility study, found improvements in postnatal depression (PND) symptoms at 6-month follow up. The current qualitative study aimed to explore how and why M4M-online impacted the mental health of those taking part. Methods: We took a theory-based approach using the INgredients iN ArTs in hEealth (INNATE) Framework of 'active ingredients' and the Multi-level Leisure Mechanisms Framework of 'mechanisms of action' to identify and categorise intervention components and change mechanisms. Iterative consensus building between three researchers was complemented by qualitative semi-structured online interviews with 24 women experiencing PND symptoms who took part in M4M-online. Data were analysed inductively using reflexive thematic analysis. Results: Consistency was found between the online and in-person interventions in active ingredients relating to project design, content, programme management and the composition of the group. Key differences were in the social and contextual ingredients. Psychological, social and behavioural mechanisms for improved mental health and wellbeing included: (1) Increased self-confidence as a mother, (2) Increased positive emotional responses, (3) A supported exploration of self-dentity, (4) Reduced loneliness and isolation, (5) Increased social bonding and connections with family and (6) Enhanced sense of time through new routines. Conclusions: Participating in online group singing can support new mothers experiencing PND by triggering psychological, social and behavioural responses that lead to improved mental health. Key programme features are identified which can be used to design future online creative health interventions or tailor in-person activities for remote delivery to support populations who may face practical and social barriers to attending in-person. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the most aggressive breast cancer subtype and has the highest rate of recurrence1. The predominant standard of care for advanced TNBC is systemic chemotherapy with or without immunotherapy; however, responses are typically short lived1,2. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop more effective treatments. Components of the PI3K pathway represent plausible therapeutic targets; more than 70% of TNBCs have alterations in PIK3CA, AKT1 or PTEN3–6. However, in contrast to hormone-receptor-positive tumours, it is still unclear whether or how triple-negative disease will respond to PI3K pathway inhibitors7. Here we describe a promising AKT-inhibitor-based therapeutic combination for TNBC. Specifically, we show that AKT inhibitors synergize with agents that suppress the histone methyltransferase EZH2 and promote robust tumour regression in multiple TNBC models in vivo. AKT and EZH2 inhibitors exert these effects by first cooperatively driving basal-like TNBC cells into a more differentiated, luminal-like state, which cannot be effectively induced by either agent alone. Once TNBCs are differentiated, these agents kill them by hijacking signals that normally drive mammary gland involution. Using a machine learning approach, we developed a classifier that can be used to predict sensitivity. Together, these findings identify a promising therapeutic strategy for this highly aggressive tumour type and illustrate how deregulated epigenetic enzymes can insulate tumours from oncogenic vulnerabilities. Background: Compared to the general population, people who inject drugs have poor health and wellbeing. Longitudinal studies can provide insight into factors driving these worse health outcomes but are subject to methodological challenges, such as cohort attrition. The aim of this study was to assess and characterise attrition in a prospective cohort of people who inject drugs in Victoria, Australia. Methods: Using annually collected self-reported data from The Melbourne Injecting Drug User Cohort Study (SuperMIX) from September 2008 to January 2021, we estimated the incidence of participants being lost-to-follow-up (LTFU), with an episode of being LTFU defined as participants not undertaking a follow-up interview within two years of their last interview. We utilised a multiple event discrete-time survival analysis on participant period-observation data to estimate the associations between key factors and LTFU. Key areas of exposure measurement in analyses were sociodemographic, drug use and mental health. Results: A total of n = 1328 SuperMIX participants completed a baseline interview, with n = 489 (36.8%) LTFU, i.e. not completing a follow-up interview in the following two years. Increased attrition was observed among SuperMIX participants who were: born outside Australia, younger than 30 years, reporting having completed fewer years of education, not residing in stable accommodation, not in stable employment and not on opioid agonist therapy (OAT). Conclusions: The attrition rate of the SuperMIX cohort has largely been stable throughout the duration of the study. Higher attrition rates among individuals at greater sociodemographic disadvantage and not on OAT suggest that additional efforts are required to retain these participants. Findings also suggest that SuperMIX might not be capturing data on adverse health and wellbeing outcomes among subpopulations at high risk of harm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Small Island Developing States (SIDS) face profound challenges from pollution, exacerbated by inadequate infrastructure and resource limitations. This paper examines the longstanding pollution issues plaguing SIDS, highlighting their vulnerability to environmental degradation due to underdeveloped waste management systems and unique oceanographic conditions. The case study of Eleuthera Island in The Bahamas illustrates these challenges vividly, showcasing the island’s struggle with e-waste management. This example reinforces the urgency of integrated strategies to enhance environmental resilience and sustainable development in SIDS. Emerging concerns include the proliferation of technology-critical elements (TCEs) in e-waste, driven by rapid urbanization and tourism growth. Despite their crucial role in technological advancement, TCEs pose significant recycling and management difficulties, particularly in the context of limited waste infrastructure. The paper also highlights the imperative for comprehensive regulatory frameworks and sustainable practices to mitigate pollution impacts and safeguard ocean and human health, particularly by shedding light on legislative gaps and opportunities for enhancing pollution control measures in The Bahamas. Simple Summary: The mortality of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is rising globally, against the trend of other cancers. People with liver cirrhosis, even after hepatitis C treatment still face a high risk of HCC, requiring ongoing enrolment in HCC surveillance, and new technologies to improve diagnostic sensitivity are being explored. However, their impact on HCC survival remains uncertain relative to improving adherence to existing surveillance methods. This study uses mathematical modeling to assess how different strategies can reduce deaths from liver cancer in people with cirrhosis after being cured of hepatitis C. We compared the impact of improved adherence to ultrasound screening with increased HCC imaging sensitivity on HCC survival. Notably, we found that even modest enhancements in surveillance adherence (5–10 percentage point increases) exhibited significant survival benefits for people with hepatitis C-related cirrhosis, outperforming improvements in diagnostic sensitivity. Background & Aims: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) presents a significant global health challenge, particularly among individuals with liver cirrhosis, with hepatitis C (HCV) a major cause. In people with HCV-related cirrhosis, an increased risk of HCC remains after cure. HCC surveillance with six monthly ultrasounds has been shown to improve survival. However, adherence to biannual screening is currently suboptimal. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of increased HCC surveillance uptake and improved ultrasound sensitivity on mortality among people with HCV-related cirrhosis post HCV cure. Methods: This study utilized mathematical modelling to assess HCC progression, surveillance, diagnosis, and treatment among individuals with cirrhosis who had successfully been treated for HCV. The deterministic compartmental model incorporated Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stages to simulate disease progression and diagnosis probabilities in 100 people with cirrhosis who had successfully been treated for hepatitis C over 10 years. Four interventions were modelled to assess their potential for improving life expectancy: realistic improvements to surveillance adherence, optimistic improvements to surveillance adherence, diagnosis sensitivity enhancements, and improved treatment efficacy Results: Realistic adherence improvements resulted in 9.8 (95% CI 7.9, 11.6) life years gained per cohort of 100 over a 10-year intervention period; 17.2 (13.9, 20.3) life years were achieved in optimistic adherence improvements. Diagnosis sensitivity improvements led to a 7.0 (3.6, 13.8) year gain in life years, and treatment improvements improved life years by 9.0 (7.5, 10.3) years. Conclusions: Regular HCC ultrasound surveillance remains crucial to reduce mortality among people with cured hepatitis C and cirrhosis. Our study highlights that even minor enhancements to adherence to ultrasound surveillance can significantly boost life expectancy across populations more effectively than strategies that increase surveillance sensitivity or treatment efficacy. The association between environmental degradation, social disparities, and disease emergence has become clearer than ever in the last decades, emphasizing the need for scientific approaches to protect human and environmental health. Despite scientific consensus, however, the general public often lacks awareness and understanding of these relationships. Misinformation and compartmentalized knowledge further complicate conveying the importance of the subject to the lay population. Thus, scientists must engage in effective scientific communication and promote scientific literacy (SL) among the public. This study discusses the strategies that may be employed to overcome disinformation and enhance scientific literacy and communication, all of which are paramount to deepen the understanding of the connections between biodiversity conservation, environmental health, and public well-being, empowering individuals to take informed actions for a sustainable and healthy future. Strandings have been extensively documented for large mammals, however, a comprehensive survey focusing on batoids is currently lacking. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a review of available stranding data sourced from iNaturalist, news websites, and published papers. A total of 3.148 reports encompassing 189 batoid species were recovered, revealing the vulnerability of both oceanic and coastal species to strandings. Nevertheless, limited data on life stage, sex, animal condition, and fate hinder a comprehensive understanding of this phenomenon. Putative causes were identified only for a small percentage (6%) of the reports, namely pollution, abrupt environmental alterations, predation, pathologies, and fishing activities. The earliest reported stranding dates back to 1989, with an increase in reports observed since 2019. iNaturalist accounted for the majority (75%) of records, emphasizing its significance as a platform for reporting and monitoring batoid strandings. These strandings were reported in 51 countries, with the coastal areas of California, United States, particularly notable. Among the identified species, Rhinoptera bonasus exhibited the highest number of strandings, with 392 recorded individuals. Alarmingly, more than half of the reports involved threatened species, underscoring the need for increased attention to batoid strandings. To address these issues, we propose the establishment of stranding monitoring networks and the development of a freely accessible global database. In addition, the training of volunteer citizen scientists, the development of rescue and rehabilitation protocols, and manuals of good fishing practices aimed at commercial and recreational fisheries are also recommended. Information about the absolute Galois group GK of a number field K is encoded in how it acts on the étale fundamental group π of a curve X defined over K. In the case that K = ℚ(ζn) is the cyclotomic field and X is the Fermat curve of degree n ≥ 3, Anderson determined the action of GK on the étale homology with coefficients in ℤ/nℤ. The étale homology is the first quotient in the lower central series of the étale fundamental group. In this paper, we determine the Galois module structure of the graded Lie algebra for π. As a consequence, this determines the action of GK on all degrees of the associated graded quotient of the lower central series of the étale fundamental group of the Fermat curve of degree n, with coefficients in ℤ/nℤ. In this article, we examine progress and challenges in designing, implementing, and evaluating culturally sensitive behavioral interventions by tailoring health communication to groups or individuals. After defining common tailoring constructs (i.e., culture, race, and ethnicity), cultural sensitivity, and cultural tailoring, we examine when it is useful to culturally tailor and address cultural sensitivity in health communication by group tailoring or individual tailoring and when tailoring health communication may not be necessary or appropriate for achieving behavior change. After reviewing selected approaches to cultural tailoring, we critique the quality of research in this domain with a focus on the internal validity of empirical findings. Then we explore the ways in which cultural sensitivity, group targeting, and individual tailoring have incorporated culture in health promotion and health communication. Aims Although elasmobranchs are consumed worldwide, bacteriological assessments for this group are still sorely lacking. In this context, this study assessed bacteria of sharks and rays from one of the most important landing ports along the Rio de Janeiro coast. Methods and results Bacteria were isolated from the cloacal swabs of the sampled elasmobranchs. They were cultured, and Vibrio, Aeromonas , and Enterobacterales were isolated and identified. The isolated bacteria were then biochemically identified and antimicrobial susceptibility assays were performed. Antigenic characterizations were performed for Salmonella spp. and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) assays were performed to identify Escherichia coli pathotypes. Several bacteria of interest in the One Health context were detected. The most prevalent Enterobacterales were Morganella morganii and Citrobacter freundii , while Vibrio harveyi and Vibrio fluvialis were the most prevalent among Vibrio spp. and Aeromonas allosacharophila and Aeromonas veronii bv. veronii were the most frequent among Aeromonas spp. Several bacteria also displayed antimicrobial resistance, indicative of Public Health concerns. A total of 10% of Vibrio strains were resistant to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and 40% displayed intermediate resistance to cefoxitin. Salmonella enterica strains displayed intermediate resistance to ciprofloxacin, nalidixic acid and streptomycin. All V. cholerae strains were identified as non-O1/non-O139. The detected E. coli strains did not exhibit pathogenicity genes. This is the first study to perform serology assessments for S. enterica subsp. enterica isolated from elasmobranchs, identifying the zoonotic Typhimurium serovar. Salmonella serology evaluations are, therefore, paramount to identify the importance of elasmobranchs in the epidemiological salmonellosis chain. Conclusions The detection of several pathogenic and antibiotic-resistant bacteria may pose significant Public Health risks in Brazil, due to high elasmobranch consumption rates, indicating the urgent need for further bacteriological assessments in this group. Background: There is some concern that hepatitis C virus (HCV) reinfection might impact HCV micro‐elimination efforts among gay and bisexual men (GBM) with HIV. However, there is a limited understanding of reinfection incidence in the context of unrestricted government‐funded HCV treatment. We aimed to estimate HCV reinfection incidence among GBM with HIV in Australia from 2016 to 2020. Methods: Data were from 39 clinics participating in ACCESS, a sentinel surveillance network for blood borne viruses and sexually transmissible infections across Australia. GBM with HIV who had evidence of treatment or spontaneous clearance with at least one positive HCV RNA test, a subsequent negative HCV RNA test, and at least one additional HCV RNA test between 1st January 2016 and 31st December 2020 were eligible for inclusion. A new HCV RNA positive test and/or detectable viral load was defined as a reinfection. Generalised linear modelling was used to examine trends in reinfection. Results: Among 12 213 GBM with HIV who had at least one HCV test, 540 were included in the reinfection incidence analysis, of whom 38 (7%) had evidence of reinfection during the observation period. Over 1124 person‐years of follow‐up, the overall rate of reinfection was 3.4/100PY (95% CI 2.5–4.6). HCV reinfection incidence declined on average 30% per calendar year (Incidence Rate Ratio 0.70, 95% CI 0.54–0.91). Conclusion: HCV reinfection incidence has declined among GBM with HIV in Australia since government‐funded unrestricted DAAs were made available. The impact of outbreak response immunization (ORI) can be estimated by comparing observed outcomes to modelled counterfactual scenarios without ORI, but the most appropriate metrics depend on stakeholder needs and data availability. This study developed a framework for using mathematical models to assess the impact of ORI for vaccine-preventable diseases. Framework development involved (1) the assessment of impact metrics based on stakeholder interviews and literature reviews determining data availability and capacity to capture as model outcomes; (2) mapping investment in ORI elements to model parameters to define scenarios; (3) developing a system for engaging stakeholders and formulating model questions, performing analyses, and interpreting results; and (4) example applications for different settings and pathogens. The metrics identified as most useful were health impacts, economic impacts, and the risk of severe outbreaks. Scenario categories included investment in the response scale, response speed, and vaccine targeting. The framework defines four phases: (1) problem framing and data sourcing (identification of stakeholder needs, metrics, and scenarios); (2) model choice; (3) model implementation; and (4) interpretation and communication. The use of the framework is demonstrated by application to two outbreaks, measles in Papua New Guinea and Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The framework is a systematic way to engage with stakeholders and ensure that an analysis is fit for purpose, makes the best use of available data, and uses suitable modelling methodology. Background In Australia, the incidence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) has declined among gay and bisexual men (GBM) with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) since 2015 and is low among GBM using HIV preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP). However, ongoing HCV testing and treatment remains necessary to sustain this. To assess the potential utility of sexually transmissible infections (STIs) to inform HCV testing among GBM with HIV and GBM using PrEP, we examined the association between bacterial STI diagnoses and subsequent primary HCV infection. Methods Data were from a national network of 46 clinics participating in the Australian Collaboration for Coordinated Enhanced Sentinel Surveillance. GBM included had ≥1 HCV antibody negative test result and ≥1 subsequent HCV antibody and/or RNA test. Discrete time survival analysis was used to estimate the association between a positive syphilis, rectal chlamydia, and rectal gonorrhea diagnosis in the previous 2 years and a primary HCV diagnosis, defined as a positive HCV antibody or RNA test result. Results Among 6529 GBM with HIV, 92 (1.4%) had an incident HCV infection. A prior positive syphilis diagnosis was associated with an incident HCV diagnosis (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.99 [95% confidence interval, 1.11–3.58]). Among 13 061 GBM prescribed PrEP, 48 (0.4%) had an incident HCV diagnosis. Prior rectal chlamydia (adjusted hazard ratio, 2.75 [95% confidence interval, 1.42–5.32]) and rectal gonorrhea (2.54 [1.28–5.05]) diagnoses were associated with incident HCV. Conclusions Diagnoses of bacterial STIs in the past 2 years was associated with HCV incidence. Invasive species are continuously introduced in several ecosystems from human activities. Aquaculture activities are noteworthy among the many different species introduction vectors currently in place, generating a pattern of constant, frequent or massive release of propagules into aquatic ecosystems, increasing species establishment success rates. Reported cases in marine or brackish ecosystems, however, are still scarce. As aquaculture constantly generate propagules with the ability to employ these facilities as corridors to further spread to interconnected brackish and freshwater ecosystems, colonising high salinity systems, this study aimed to compile evidence of Tilapiines detected in Brazilian coastal marine and brackish ecosystems. Nineteen records were obtained, with the presence of this invader suggested as higher following rainfall seasons. The widespread distribution of Tilapiines is relatively well-known in Brazilian freshwater ecosystems but, up to now, its potential to use brackish and marine ecosystems as ecological corridors has been described only experimentally. Our findings highlight the potential for a typically freshwater invader to spread through marine ecosystems, raising concerns regarding the licensing of aquaculture projects within rivers and estuaries, as tilapia may significantly affect native Brazilian biota. Pontoporia blainvillei, commonly known as the Franciscana dolphin, inhabits the coastal waters of South America and is classified as vulnerable and as undergoing significant population declines. This species is generally found in turbid coastal waters, although it is also found in clear waters, as well as marine areas associated with islands and rocky shores. Tumours originating from cholangiocytes have been rarely described in cetaceans, with descriptions limited to cholangiocellular carcinomas. Cholangiocellular adenomas are characterised by the formation of bile ducts and are rarer than cholangiocellular carcinoma. This study described the first report of a tumour originating from cholangiocytes in P. blainvillei, raising concerns on this endangered cetacean's health status and conservation. Compounds displaying estrogenic potential can lead to serious negative aquatic ecosystem impacts, and exposure to mixtures of endocrine disruptors present in environmental matrices with very complex characteristics, including sediments, can cause serious risks to biota, animals, and humans. Within this perspective, the aim of the present study was to assess estrogenic activity and toxicity in sediments sampled from Guanabara Bay, the most important, although chronically polluted, estuary in southeastern Brazil. To this end, estrogenic activity determinations were performed by the yeast estrogen screen (YES) assay, and acute toxicity assays were carried out employing Vibrio fischeri. Estrogenic activity was quantified up for 8.7 ng g−1 in E2‐EQ, although high levels of cytotoxicity (up to 95%) were observed and might have hindered the determination of the real estrogenic potential in most samples. Acute toxicity to V. fischeri ranged from 0 to 45.21%. These results point to potential deleterious effects caused by micropollutants and underline the urgency of continuous monitoring of the degradation degree of the Guanabara Bay estuary. Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections are more prevalent in people who inject drugs (PWID) who often experience additional health risks. HCV induces inflammation and immune alterations that contribute to hepatic and non-hepatic morbidities. It remains unclear whether curative direct acting antiviral (DAA) therapy completely reverses immune alterations in PWID. Methods: Plasma biomarkers of immune activation associated with chronic disease risk were measured in HCV-seronegative (n=24) and HCV RNA+ (n=32) PWID at baseline and longitudinally after DAA therapy. Adjusted generalised estimating equations were used to assess longitudinal changes in biomarker levels. Comparisons between community controls (n=29) and HCVseronegative PWID were made using adjusted multiple regression modelling. Results: HCV-seronegative PWID exhibited significantly increased levels of inflammatory biomarkers including soluble (s) TNF-RII, IL-6, sCD14 and sCD163 and the diabetes index HbA1c as compared to community controls. CXCL10, sTNF-RII, vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 and lipopolysaccharide binding protein (LBP) were additionally elevated in PWID with viremic HCV infection as compared to HCV-PWID. Whilst curative DAA therapy reversed some biomarkers, others including LBP and sTNF-RII remained elevated 48 weeks after HCV cure. Conclusion: Elevated levels of inflammatory and chronic disease biomarkers in PWID suggest an increased risk of chronic morbidities such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. HCV infection in PWID poses an additional disease burden, amplified by the incomplete reversal of immune dysfunction following DAA therapy. Acquiescent response style (ARS), the tendency for survey respondents to agree with survey items, is of particular concern for increasing measurement error in surveys with populations who are more likely to acquiesce, such as Latino respondents in the U.S. In order to develop methods for reducing ARS, this study addressed two questions: (1) Does administering a questionnaire using conversational interviewing (CI) yield less ARS than standardized interviewing (SI)? (2) Do bipolar disagree/agree (DA) response scales lead to higher ARS than unipolar response scales that do not assess agreement (non-AG)? A total of 891 Latino telephone survey respondents were screened for ARS and randomly assigned to four experimental groups determined by crossing interviewing technique (CI or SI) and response format (non-AG or DA): (1) SI/non-AG (n = 301); (2) SI/DA (n = 295); (3) CI/non-AG (n = 149); and (4) CI/DA (n = 146). CI yielded lower ARS than SI (p < 0.001), but there was no difference in ARS between DA and non-AG response scales. A subset of coded interview recordings indicated that the CI interviewers reduced ARS by clarifying questions even in the absence of evidence of respondent confusion and helping with response mapping. These results suggest that difficulty answering questions associated with cognitive decline and cultural norms may have prompted higher use of ARS, but that conversational interviewers were able to mitigate these difficulties and cultural tendencies. Findings from this study suggest that using CI to administer survey questions may decrease ARS and improve data quality among survey respondents who are more likely to engage in ARS. Introduction: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is often effective in treating severe obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) when traditional therapeutic approaches have failed. However, optimizing DBS programming is a time-consuming process. Recent research in movement disorders suggests that local field potentials can dramatically speed up the process of identifying the optimal contacts for stimulation, but this has not yet been tested in a patient with OCD. Methods: In a patient with severe OCD, we first determined the optimal contact for stimulation for each hemisphere using traditional monopolar and bipolar review and then tested whether the clinically optimal contact in each hemisphere corresponded to local field potential signals. Results: Overall, we found that clinical efficacy corresponded with the contacts that showed the strongest local field potential signals across multiple frequency bands. Discussion: Our findings are the first indication that local field potentials could guide contact selection in patients with OCD. If validated in a larger sample, this methodology could decrease time to clinical benefit and improve accuracy in patients that are difficult to assess using traditional methods. In September 2020, a male common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) was found dead on a beach near Bat-Yam, Israel. A small, raised, well circumscribed penile lesion (i.e., mass) was identified and removed for histology and molecular characterizations. By histology, the penile mass presented focal keratinization of the squamous epithelium and a mild ballooning of acanthocytes in lower epithelium levels, as well as features compatible with viral plaques, and tested positive for a gammaherpesvirus through molecular characterization analyses. Tissue samples from the lungs, liver, and spleen, however, tested negative for herpesvirus infection. The gammaherpesvirus detected herein is similar to other isolates found in several areas worldwide in different cetacean species. This is the first reported case of gammaherpesvirus infection in dolphins from the eastern Mediterranean Sea, indicative of the need for long-term assessments to create viral infections databases in cetaceans, especially in a climate change context, which is likely to intensify infectious disease outbreaks in marine mammals in the future. Objective: Front-of-package warning labels introduced in Mexico in 2020 included disclaimers that caution against allowing children to consume products with non-sugary sweeteners and caffeine. We examined the awareness and use of the disclaimers among Mexican adults and youth 1 month after the regulation was implemented. We also investigated their impact on the perceived healthfulness of industrialised beverages designed for children. Design: Data on the awareness and use of the disclaimers were analysed. Two between-subjects experiments examined the effect of a sweetener disclaimer (Experiment 1, youth and adults) or a caffeine disclaimer (Experiment 2, only adults) on the perceived healthfulness of industrialised beverages. Interactions between experimental conditions and demographic characteristics were tested. Setting: Online survey in 2020. Participants: Mexican adults (≥18 years, n 2108) and youth (10–17 years, n 1790). Results: Most participants (>80 %) had seen the disclaimers at least rarely, and over 60 % used them sometimes or frequently. The sweetener disclaimer led to a lower perceived healthfulness of a fruit drink (adults: 2·74 ± 1·44; youth: 2·04 ± 0·96) compared with the no-disclaimer condition (adults: 3·17 ± 1·54; youth: 2·32 ± 0·96) (t 's: >4·0, P values: <0·001). This effect was larger among older adults and male youth. The caffeine disclaimer did not affect adult's perceived healthfulness of a caffeinated drink (t = 0·861, P value = 0·3894). Conclusions: There were high awareness and use of the sweeteners and caffeine disclaimers shortly after the warning labels were implemented. The sweetener disclaimer appears to be helping consumers modify their perceptions regarding industrialised beverages for children. Background: Applying the knowledge gained through implementation science can support the uptake of research evidence into practice; however, those doing and supporting implementation (implementation practitioners) may face barriers to applying implementation science in their work. One strategy to enhance individuals' and teams' ability to apply implementation science in practice is through training and professional development opportunities (capacity-building initiatives). Although there is an increasing demand for and offerings of implementation practice capacity-building initiatives, there is no universal agreement on what content should be included. In this study we aimed to explore what capacity-building developers and deliverers identify as essential training content for teaching implementation practice. Methods: We conducted a convergent mixed-methods study with participants who had developed and/or delivered a capacity-building initiative focused on teaching implementation practice. Participants completed an online questionnaire to provide details on their capacity-building initiatives; took part in an interview or focus group to explore their questionnaire responses in depth; and offered course materials for review. We analyzed a subset of data that focused on the capacity-building initiatives' content and curriculum. We used descriptive statistics for quantitative data and conventional content analysis for qualitative data, with the data sets merged during the analytic phase. We presented frequency counts for each category to highlight commonalities and differences across capacity-building initiatives. Results: Thirty-three individuals representing 20 capacity-building initiatives participated. Study participants identified several core content areas included in their capacity-building initiatives: (1) taking a process approach to implementation; (2) identifying and applying implementation theories, models, frameworks, and approaches; (3) learning implementation steps and skills; (4) developing relational skills. In addition, study participants described offering applied and pragmatic content (e.g., tools and resources), and tailoring and evolving the capacity-building initiative content to address emerging trends in implementation science. Study participants highlighted some challenges learners face when acquiring and applying implementation practice knowledge and skills. Conclusions: This study synthesized what experienced capacity-building initiative developers and deliverers identify as essential content for teaching implementation practice. These findings can inform the development, refinement, and delivery of capacity-building initiatives, as well as future research directions, to enhance the translation of implementation science into practice. Background: The National Basketball Association (NBA) suspended operations in response to the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. To safely complete the 2019–20 season, the NBA created a closed campus in Orlando, Florida, known as the NBA "Bubble." More than 5000 individuals lived, worked, and played basketball at a time of high local prevalence of SARS-CoV-2. Methods: Stringent protocols governed campus life to protect NBA and support personnel from contracting COVID-19. Participants quarantined before departure and upon arrival. Medical and social protocols required that participants remain on campus, test regularly, physically distance, mask, use hand hygiene, and more. Cleaning, disinfection, and air filtration was enhanced. Campus residents were screened daily and confirmed cases of COVID-19 were investigated. Results: In the Bubble population, 148 043 COVID-19 reverse transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR) tests were performed across approximately 5000 individuals; Orlando had a 4% to 15% test positivity rate in this timeframe. There were 44 COVID-19 cases diagnosed either among persons during arrival quarantine or in non-team personnel while working on campus after testing but before receipt of a positive result. No cases of COVID-19 were identified among NBA players or NBA team staff living in the Bubble once cleared from quarantine. Conclusions: Drivers of success included the requirement for players and team staff to reside and remain on campus, well-trained compliance monitors, unified communication, layers of protection between teams and the outside, activation of high-quality laboratory diagnostics, and available mental health services. An emphasis on data management, evidence-based decision-making, and the willingness to evolve protocols were instrumental to successful operations. However, anthropogenic activities associated to land use changes and accelerated urban development has led to significant amounts of pollutant inputs, especially trace elements, into these environments. To assess land use changes due to accelerated urban development during the last decades the state of Rio de Janeiro, 15 surface sediment samples and one sediment core were analysed for the first time at Padre Lagoon, in southeastern Rio de Janeiro, with regard to radiocarbon dating, grain size, and pseudototal trace element concentrations. The age of the bottom core ranged from 470–314 cal yr BP determined by 14C radiocarbon dating. Pseudototal trace element concentrations were significantly different between the sediment core and the surface sediments and higher trace element levels were observed at the top of the sediment core and in all surface sediment samples, indicating high anthropogenic influence to the lagoon over time, both due to local urbanization and from atmospheric pollution from the industrial metropolitan region of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Bisphenol A (BPA), an alkylphenolic compound, is one of the most polluting and hazardous organic chemicals. Its routine detection is, however, still rather expensive due to high-cost equipment. In this context, we applied the effect caused by BPA to the optical properties of surfactant-stabilized silver nanoparticles further modified with the use of ammonia (AgNP-NH3) to develop a simple and quantitative approach for BPA determination. The experimental conditions of the AgNP-NH3 probe were adjusted to establish a stable and sensitive response toward BPA in aqueous media. The use of probe dispersion measured at a wavelength of 403 nm enabled a limit of detection of 2.0 nmol L−1 (0.5 ng mL−1), with a linear response as a function of a concentration of BPA ranging from 10 to 120 nmol L−1 (from 2.2 to 27 ng mL−1). The use of vortex-assisted liquid–liquid microextraction ensured the application of selective determination to real tap and stream water samples, with recoveries ranging from 85.0 to 111%. The protocol developed herein is simple, sensitive, and selective, does not require the use of toxic labeling agents, and can be easily adapted for the routine analysis of BPA in different real samples. The current climate change scenario caused by anthropogenic activities has resulted in novel environmental pressures, increasing the occurrence and severity of fungal infections in the marine environment. Research on fungi in several taxonomic groups is widespread although not the case for elasmobranchs (sharks and rays). In this context, the aim of the present study was to screen the oral fungal microbiota present in artisanally captured Rioraja agassizii, a batoid that, although endangered, is highly fished and consumed worldwide. Oropharyngeal samples were obtained by swabbing and the samples were investigated using morphological and phenotypic methods by streaking on Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) and subculturing onto CHROMagar Candida (BD Difco) and CHROMagar Candida Plus (CHROMagarTM), as well as molecular techniques by amplification of the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 ribosomal DNA region and a MALDI-TOF MS assessment. The findings indicated the presence of Candida parapsilosis (seven isolates), Candida duobushaemulonii (one isolate) and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa (three isolates), several of these reported for the first time in Rioraja agassizii. In addition, a 100% agreement between the MALDI-TOF results and partial ITS region sequencing was noted, demonstrating that the MALDI-TOF MS is a rapid and effective alternative for yeast identification in Rioraja agassizii isolates and potentially in other elasmobranch species. These findings highlight the need for further research to determine the potential impact on elasmobranch health, ecology, and commercial fisheries. Furthermore, this research is paramount in a One Health framework and may be employed to predict elasmobranch responses to an evolving ocean, keep healthy populations in check, monitor species, and assess the public health consequences of consuming these species. Advanced surgical technologies consist of remote and virtual platforms that facilitate surgical care and education. It also includes the infrastructure necessary to utilize these platforms (e.g., internet access, robotic systems, and simulators). Given that 5 billion people lack access to safe and timely surgical care, the appeal of these technologies to the field of global surgery lies primarily in its ability to eliminate geographical barriers and address surgeon shortages. This article discusses the use of virtual and remote technologies in resource-limited settings, the potential applications of these technologies, the possible barriers to their integration, and the impact these technologies may have on access to surgical care and education. Specifically, it will explore how robotic surgery, telesurgery, virtual education platforms, and simulations have the potential to be instrumental in enhancing worldwide access to safe surgical care. Background Gay and bisexual men using HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) are at increased risk for sexually transmissible infections. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) risk among PrEP users is less clear. We explored HCV prevalence and incidence among cohorts of gay and bisexual men using PrEP and sources of heterogeneity across studies. Methods This was a systematic review and meta-analysis of open-label PrEP studies to April 2022 reporting HCV prevalence at baseline or incidence during follow-up among gay and bisexual men using PrEP. Pooled prevalence and incidence estimates were calculated using random-effects meta-analysis, and subgroup analyses were performed by study- and country-level characteristics, including availability of HCV direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy at time of study. Results Twenty-four studies from 9 countries were included, with a total sample of 24 733 gay and bisexual men. Pooled HCV antibody baseline prevalence was 0.97% (95% CI, 0.63%–1.31%), and pooled HCV RNA baseline prevalence was 0.38% (95% CI, 0.19%–0.56%). Among 19 studies reporting HCV incidence, incidence ranged from 0.0 to 2.93/100 person-years (py); the pooled estimate was 0.83/100py (95% CI, 0.55–1.11). HCV incidence was higher in 12 studies that began follow-up before broad DAA availability (1.27/100py) than in 8 studies that began follow-up after broad DAA availability (0.34/100py) and higher in studies in Europe compared with North America and Australia. Conclusions Early reports of high HCV incidence among PrEP-using cohorts likely reflect enrollment of individuals based on specific risk-based eligibility criteria for smaller studies and enrollment before DAA scale-up. In contexts where both DAAs and PrEP have been implemented at scale, studies report lower HCV incidence. PrEP-specific HCV testing guidelines should be guided by local epidemiology. Background: Postnatal depression (PND) affects over 12% of mothers, with numbers rising during COVID-19. Singing groups can support mothers with PND; however, online delivery has never been evaluated. SHAPER-PNDO, a single-arm clinical trial, evaluated the feasibility, clinical efficacy, and well-being outcomes of a 6-week online version of Breathe Melodies for Mums (M4M) singing intervention developed for mothers with PND during COVID-19 lockdowns. Methods: The primary objective of this study was to assess the feasibility of a group online singing intervention for new mothers with postnatal depression. This was ascertained through recruitment rates, study retention rates, attendance rates to the singing sessions, and study completion rates. The secondary objective of the study was to assess the clinical efficacy and well-being outcomes of the singing intervention. Specifically, we measured change in Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and Office for National Statistics Wellbeing Scale (ONS) scores from baseline to end-of-intervention (week 6); follow-up assessments were completed at weeks 3, 16, and 32. Mothers were eligible if they scored ≥10 on the baseline EPDS. Results: Eighty-seven percent of the 37 recruited mothers completed the study, attending, on average, 5 of the 6 group singing sessions. With regard to secondary outcomes, at end-of-treatment, mothers experienced significant reductions in depression (EPDS, 16.6 ± 3.7 to 11.2 ± 5.3, 95% CI [0.79,1.65]), anxiety (STAI-S, 48.4 ± 27.1 to 41.7 ± 26.8, 95% CI [4.96, 17.65]) and stress (PSS, 29.0 ± 5.7 to 19.7 ± 5.3, 95% CI [1.33, 7.07]); and, furthermore, significant improvements in life satisfaction (ONS, 50.5 ± 23.0 to 72.8 ± 11.7, 95% CI [− 39.86, − 4.64]) and feelings of worthwhileness (ONS, 51.7 ± 30.4 to 78.6 ± 15.1, 95% CI [− 52.79, − 0.85]). Reduction on the EPDS correlated with a reduction on the BDI and the STAI-S and maternal childhood maltreatment was predictive of a smaller treatment response. Conclusions: M4M online was feasible to mothers who partook in the programme. Furthermore, M4M online supports the mental health and well-being of new mothers experiencing PND, especially when barriers to in-person treatment are present. Background: Substantial evidence indicates that delay of first treatment after diagnosis is associated with poorer survival outcomes in breast cancer. Accordingly, the Commission on Cancer introduced a quality measure for receipt of therapeutic surgery within 60 days of diagnostic biopsy for stage I–III breast cancer patients in the non-neoadjuvant setting. It is unknown, however, what may contribute to mortality associated with treatment delay. Therefore, we investigated whether biopsy type moderates the effect of the mortality risk posed by treatment delay. Methods: Retrospective analysis of 31,306 women with stage I–III breast cancer diagnosed between 2003 and 2013 selected from the SEER-Medicare database was performed to determine whether needle biopsy type [core needle biopsy (CNB) or vacuum-assisted biopsy (VAB)] impacts time to treatment (TTT)-associated survival outcomes. Multivariable Fine-Gray competing risk survival models, adjusted for inverse propensity score weights, were used to determine the association between biopsy type, TTT, and breast cancer-specific mortality (BCSM). Results: TTT ≥ 60 days was associated with 45% higher risk of BCSM (sHR = 1.45, 95% CI 1.24–1.69) compared to those with TTT < 60 days in stage I–III cases. Independent of TTT, CNB was associated with 28% higher risk of BCSM compared to VAB in stage II–III cases (sHR = 1.28, 95% CI 1.11–1.36), translating to a 2.7% and 4.0% absolute difference in BCSM at 5 and 10 years, respectively. However, in stage I cases, the BCSM risk was not associated with type of biopsy. Conclusions: Our results suggest that treatment delay ≥ 60 days is independently associated with poorer survival outcomes in breast cancer patients. A substantial proportion of acute stroke patients fail to recover following successful endovascular therapy (EVT) and injury to the brain and vasculature secondary to reperfusion may be a contributor. Acute stroke patients were included with: i) large vessel occlusion of the anterior circulation, ii) successful recanalization, and iii) evaluable MRI early after EVT. Presence of hyperemia on MRI perfusion was assessed by consensus using a modified ASPECTS. Three different approaches were used to quantify relative cerebral blood flow (rCBF). Sixty-seven patients with median age of 66 [59–76], 57% female, met inclusion criteria. Hyperemia was present in 35/67 (52%) patients early post-EVT, in 32/65 (49%) patients at 24 hours, and in 19/48 (40%) patients at 5 days. There were no differences in incomplete reperfusion, HT, PH-2, HARM, severe HARM or symptomatic ICH rates between those with and without early post-EVT hyperemia. A strong association (R2 = 0.81, p < 0.001) was found between early post-EVT hyperemia (p = 0.027) and DWI volume at 24 hours after adjusting for DWI volume at 2 hours (p < 0.001) and incomplete reperfusion at 24 hours (p = 0.001). Early hyperemia is a potential marker for cerebrovascular injury and may help select patients for adjunctive therapy to prevent edema, reperfusion injury, and lesion growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Policy responses to COVID-19 in Victoria, Australia over 2020–2021 have been supported by evidence generated through mathematical modelling. This study describes the design, key findings, and process for policy translation of a series of modelling studies conducted for the Victorian Department of Health COVID-19 response team during this period. Methods: An agent-based model, Covasim, was used to simulate the impact of policy interventions on COVID-19 outbreaks and epidemic waves. The model was continually adapted to enable scenario analysis of settings or policies being considered at the time (e.g. elimination of community transmission versus disease control). Model scenarios were co-designed with government, to fill evidence gaps prior to key decisions. Results: Understanding outbreak risk following incursions was critical to eliminating community COVID-19 transmission. Analyses showed risk depended on whether the first detected case was the index case, a primary contact of the index case, or a 'mystery case'. There were benefits of early lockdown on first case detection and gradual easing of restrictions to minimise resurgence risk from undetected cases. As vaccination coverage increased and the focus shifted to controlling rather than eliminating community transmission, understanding health system demand was critical. Analyses showed that vaccines alone could not protect health systems and need to be complemented with other public health measures. Conclusions: Model evidence offered the greatest value when decisions needed to be made pre-emptively, or for questions that could not be answered with empiric data and data analysis alone. Deep brain stimulation (DBS), a treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD), has been associated with suicidality. We conducted a case-control study comparing suicide in four pairs of cohorts: PD patients with DBS or not, epilepsy patients with resection surgery or not, subjects with BMI≥30 with bariatric surgery or not, and patients with chronic kidney disease with transplantation or not. PD patients with DBS demonstrated a lower risk of suicide relative to PD patients without DBS. Findings from other elective surgeries indicate that patients receiving operative treatments do not possess predictable differences in suicide rates relative to their medically managed counterparts. Undergraduate and graduate students have a higher risk of mental illness than the general population. Multiple barriers may contribute to decreased help-seeking, including mental health stigma, lack of awareness of available resources, lack of prioritization of self-care, busy class schedules, and different preferences in communication styles. Over the past six years, we have increased the utilization of our Student and Resident Mental Health Clinic on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medial Campus by more than 100%. This viewpoint article highlights eight initiatives that address some of the barriers that mental health clinics on undergraduate and graduate campuses may face. These initiatives include involving students to reduce stigma and increase engagement, matching capacity of clinic services to demand, using technology, being as visible as possible, modeling vulnerability and self-care, adapting services to your audience needs, providing food (other than pizza!), and building a team and promoting collegiality. Understanding how elasmobranchs respond to stressors is imperative so that effective measures to reduce mortality be employed, whether in commercially captured animals or sharks and rays maintained in human care. Currently, reflex action mortality predictors (RAMPs) are the most reliable proxies to indicate an animal's condition state, commonly employed for both teleost and elasmobranchs. As our understanding of mortality predictors is evolving, is it necessary that traditional indicators be constantly reviewed and new proxies proposed, in order to improve the tools available for the best possible evaluation of a stressed individual. In this context, this review aimed to compile data on behavioral and visual proxies, along with the proposition of new proxies to guide professionals and assist them in identifying signs associated with alarming situations that might potentially result in the death of highly stressed individuals or sub-lethal effects at population level (migration, reproduction) that may seriously compromise the success of release measures. Although links between social relationships and health are well established, few studies have concurrently examined the effects of compositional, structural, and functional dimensions of social networks on glycemic (HbA1c) control in low- and middle-income countries such as Ghana. In these settings where informal social relationships are critical for access to resources, evaluating the links between social network characteristics, social support, and glycemic control may provide clarity about important relationships that facilitate the well-being of individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). In 2018, we conducted a hospital-based, cross-sectional survey of noninstitutionalized adults with T2DM in Ghana. Using data from 247 study participants, multivariable linear regression models were used to estimate associations between: 1) HbA1c and three social network characteristics (kin composition, household composition, and network density); 2) social support and the three social network characteristics; and 3) HbA1c and social support. We also examined gender differences in these associations and applied mediation techniques to determine if network characteristics operated through social support to affect HbA1c. Findings indicated that higher kin composition and higher household composition were each significantly associated with increased social support. Neither social support nor social network characteristics were significantly related to HbA1c, and there were no gender differences in any of these associations. Although family and household members were identified as important sources of social support for diabetes management, the ways in which they influence HbA1c control among Ghanaians require further investigation. Future studies can examine whether changes in social support over time, social support satisfaction, or other dimensions of social relationships improve T2DM outcomes in countries like Ghana. The final disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW) in dumpsites is still a reality worldwide, especially in low- and middle-income countries, leading to leachate-contaminated zones. Therefore, the aim of this study was to carry out soil and leachate physicochemical, microbiological, and toxicological characterizations from a non-operational dumpsite. The L-01 pond samples presented the highest physicochemical parameters, especially chloride (Cl; 4101 ± 44.8 mg L−1), electrical conductivity (EC; 10,452 ± 0.1 mS cm−1), and chemical oxygen demand (COD; 760 ± 6.6 mg L−1) indicating the presence of leachate, explained by its close proximity to the landfill cell. Pond L-03 presented higher parameters compared to pond L-02, except for N-ammoniacal and phosphorus levels, explained by the local geological configuration, configured as a slope from the landfill cell towards L-03. Seven filamentous and/or yeast fungi genera were identified, including the opportunistic pathogenic fungi Candida krusei (4 CFU) in an outcrop sample. Regarding soil samples, Br, Se, and I were present at high concentrations leading to high soil contamination (CF ≤ 6). Pond L-02 presented the highest CF for Br (18.14 ± 18.41 mg kg−1) and I (10.63 ± 3.66 mg kg−1), while pond L-03 presented the highest CF for Se (7.60 ± 1.33 mg kg−1). The most severe lethal effect for Artemia salina was observed for L-03 samples (LC50: 79.91%), while only samples from L-01 were toxic to Danio rerio (LC50: 32.99%). The highest lethality for Eisenia andrei was observed for L-02 samples (LC50: 50.30%). The applied risk characterization indicates high risk of all proposed scenarios for both aquatic (RQ 375–909) and terrestrial environments (RQ > 1.4 × 105). These findings indicate that the investigated dumpsite is contaminated by both leachate and metals, high risks to living organisms and adjacent water resources, also potentially affecting human health. The tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) has been relatively well assessed concerning biology and ecology aspects in both Atlantic and Pacific North America and in Caribbean waters. The amount of data in these regions has led to the species protection under capture quotas and with the creation of sanctuaries. The reality in developing countries, however, is the exact opposite, with scarce information on the species in the southern hemisphere, namely South American and African waters. In these regions, protection measures are insufficient, and studies on tiger shark biology and ecology are scarce, significantly hindering conservation and management efforts. Thus, the aim of this study was to compile scientific literature on the tiger shark in the South Atlantic and discuss the impact of these data (or lack thereof) distributed within a total of ten research categories for guiding management plans. In total, 41 scientific publications on different G. cuvier biology and ecology aspects were obtained. The most studied topics were Feeding Ecology (n = 12), followed by Human Interactions (n = 8), and Movements and Migration (n = 7). Northeastern Brazil (Southwest Atlantic) was the most researched area, probably due to the higher coastal abundance of tiger sharks in this area, alongside a high number of recorded attacks, justifying funding for studies in the region. No studies carried out in other South American or African countries were found. It is important to mention that even though some research topics are relatively well covered, a severe knowledge gap is noted for risk assessments and fisheries management, with a proposition for the implementation of sanctuaries noted. This is, however, particularly worrisome, as the South Atlantic is mostly unexplored in this regard for tiger sharks. It is also important to note how different the attention given to this species is in the North Atlantic when compared to the South region. Lastly, we highlight that the existence of sub-populations, the lack of migratory corridors geographically connecting distinct areas used by the species, and the lack of fisheries statistics on tiger shark landings, all increase the vulnerability of this species in the South Atlantic.
