We present a detailed comparison of shell model calculations with inverse kinematic transfer reaction data, obtained using a radioactive beam. Experimentally extracted spectroscopic factors from the 26 Al (d , p) 27 Al reaction for both even and odd parity states are found to be exceptionally well reproduced by the shell model and a high level of consistency is observed between bound isobaric analog states in 27 Al and 27 Si , populated via (d, p) and (d, n) transfer, respectively. Furthermore, an evaluation of key resonances in the astrophysical 26 Al (p , γ) 27 Si reaction indicates that shell model calculations provide relatively accurate predictions for the existence of strong resonances and mirror nucleus comparisons appear to hold exceptionally well for proton-unbound levels. Consequently, we expect that the utilization of both techniques will likely be a very effective tool in the investigation of stellar processes outside the current reach of experiment. EMMA is a recoil mass spectrometer for ISAC-II at TRIUMF that will be used to separate the recoils of nuclear reactions from the beam and to disperse them according to their mass-to-charge ratios. EMMA has been designed for both efficiency and selectivity, possessing large acceptances in angle, mass, and energy without sacrificing the necessary beam suppression and mass resolving power. The direct and statistical neutron decay of the isoscalar giant dipole resonance has been studied in 90Zr, 116Sn, and 208Pb using the (α, α’ n) reaction at a bombarding energy of 200 MeV. The spectra of fast decay neutrons populating valence hole states of the Z, N − 1 nuclei were analyzed, and estimates for the branching ratios were determined. The observation of the nucleon-direct-decay channels helped to select giant-resonance strengths and suppress the underlying background and continuum, which led to an indication of the existence of a new mode with L = 2 character, presumably the overtone of the isoscalar giant quadrupole resonance. A kinematically complete measurement was made of the Coulomb dissociation of 8B nuclei on a Pb target at 83 MeV/nucleon. The cross-section was measured at low relative energies in order to infer the astrophysical S-factor for the 7Be( p,γ)8B reaction. A first-order perturbation theory analysis of the reaction dynamics including E1, E2, and M1 transitions was employed to extract the E1 strength relevant to neutrino-producing reactions in the solar interior. By fitting the measured cross-section from Erel = 130 keV to 400 keV, we find S17(0) = 17.8+1.4 eV b. Semiclassical 1st-order perturbation theory and fully quantum-mechanical continuum-discretized coupled-channels analyses yield nearly identical results for the E1 strength relevant to solar-neutrino flux calculations, suggesting that theoretical reaction mechanism uncertainties need not limit the precision of Coulomb-breakup determinations of the -1.2 eV b.
