We examine a Dipolarization Front (DF) event with an embedded electron diffusion region (EDR), observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft on 08 September 2018 at 14:51:30 UT in the Earth's magnetotail by applying multi‐scale multipoint analysis methods. In order to study the large‐scale context of this DF, we use conjunction observations of the Cluster spacecraft together with MMS. A polynomial magnetic field reconstruction technique is applied to MMS data to characterize the embedded electron current sheet including its velocity and the X‐line exhaust opening angle. Our results show that the MMS and Cluster spacecraft were located in two counter‐rotating vortex flows, and such flows may distort a flux tube in a way that the local magnetic shear angle is increased and localized magnetic reconnection may be triggered. Using multi‐point data from MMS we further show that the local normalized reconnection rate is in the range of R ∼ 0.16 to 0.18. We find a highly asymmetric electron in‐ and outflow structure, consistent with previous simulations on strong guide‐field reconnection events. This study shows that magnetic reconnection may not only take place at large‐scale stable magnetopause or magnetotail current sheets but also in transient localized current sheets, produced as a consequence of the interaction between the fast Earthward flows and the Earth's dipole field. During this process the magnetic field topology changes and the plasma particles decouple from the magnetic field in the so‐called diffusion region and get accelerated, forming a fast outflow jet. Over the last decades, hints arise that reconnection can take place at many different places in the magnetosphere and also very locally and intermittently. Fast plasma flows in the Magnetotail, moving toward the Earth, are assumed to be a consequence of magnetic reconnection, and are often accompanied by dipolar‐shaped magnetic flux bundles, embedded into them. The leading edges of such flux bundles are called dipolarization fronts (DF). In this work, we investigate a DF event, which hosts a diffusion region. First, we study the large‐scale characteristics of the DF, by utilizing data from both the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) and the Cluster mission, that observe different regions of the event almost simultaneously. Second, we performed a 3D magnetic field reconstruction technique and compared the results to MMS data, to investigate the event on small scales. We investigate a 15‐day period in October 2011. Auroral observations by the Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager instrument onboard the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program F16, F17, and F18 spacecraft indicate that the polar regions were covered by weak cusp‐aligned arc (CAA) emissions whenever the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) clock angle was small, |θ| < 45°, which amounted to 30% of the time. Simultaneous observations of ions and electrons in the tail by the Cluster C4 and Geotail spacecraft showed that during these intervals dense (≈1 cm−3) plasma was observed, even as far from the equatorial plane of the tail as |ZGSE| ≈ 13 RE. The ions had a pitch angle distribution peaking parallel and antiparallel to the magnetic field and the electrons had pitch angles that peaked perpendicular to the field. We interpret the counter‐streaming ions and double loss‐cone electrons as evidence that the plasma was trapped on closed field lines, and acted as a source for the CAA emission across the polar regions. This suggests that the magnetosphere was almost entirely closed during these periods. We further argue that the closure occurred as a consequence of dual‐lobe reconnection. Our finding forces a significant re‐evaluation of the magnetic topology of the magnetosphere during periods of northwards IMF. Plain Language Summary: The magnetosphere is usually assumed to contain both open and closed magnetic flux. Closed magnetic field lines have both ends connected to the Earth; open field lines connect to the Earth at one end and into the interplanetary medium at the other. There tends to be little plasma on open field lines as the particles escape down the magnetotail, whereas plasma on closed field lines is trapped. Open flux near the poles naturally explains the oval configuration of Earth's auroras, with a lack of auroras at very high latitudes where there is no plasma to cause emissions. Somewhat unexpectedly, we show that auroral emission near the poles is common and that at these times there is significant plasma in the magnetotail, indicating that the magnetosphere contains only closed flux. We propose that this magnetic configuration is formed by a process known as dual‐lobe magnetic reconnection which occurs when the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) within the solar wind points northwards. We must re‐evaluate the standard picture of magnetospheric structure during these periods of northwards IMF. Mercury's southern inner magnetosphere is an unexplored region as it was not observed by earlier space missions. In October 2021, BepiColombo mission has passed through this region during its first Mercury flyby. Here, we describe the observations of SERENA ion sensors nearby and inside Mercury's magnetosphere. An intermittent high-energy signal, possibly due to an interplanetary magnetic flux rope, has been observed downstream Mercury, together with low energy solar wind. Low energy ions, possibly due to satellite outgassing, were detected outside the magnetosphere. The dayside magnetopause and bow-shock crossing were much closer to the planet than expected, signature of a highly eroded magnetosphere. Different ion populations have been observed inside the magnetosphere, like low latitude boundary layer at magnetopause inbound and partial ring current at dawn close to the planet. These observations are important for understanding the weak magnetosphere behavior so close to the Sun, revealing details never reached before. BepiColombo mission had already two flybys of Mercury, over the total of six, as planned before entering the planet's orbit in 2025. We statistically investigate the influence of the solar wind dynamic pressure (SW Pdyn) on the field‐aligned currents (FACs) in the magnetotail with 1,492 FAC cases from July to October in 2001 and 2004, which covers 74 Cluster crossings of the plasma sheet boundary layer (PSBL) in both storm time and non‐storm time. The FAC density in the magnetotail is derived from the magnetic field data with the four‐point measurement of Cluster, and the SW Pdyn is taken from ACE data. The results indicate the FAC density becomes stronger with increasing SW Pdyn. The statistics show that the FAC occurrence increased monotonically with SW Pdyn in the three levels (Weak: SW Pdyn < 2 nPa; Medium: 2 nPa ≤ SW Pdyn ≤ 5 nPa; Strong: SW Pdyn > 5 nPa). The FAC density increased with increasing SW Pdyn, while its footprint (invariant latitude, ILAT) in the polar region decreased with increasing SW Pdyn. The response of the FAC to SW Pdyn in the magnetotail had a north‐south hemispheric asymmetry. The FAC density had a better correlation with SW Pdyn in the Northern hemisphere, while the footprint had a better correlation with SW Pdyn in the Southern hemisphere. Possible underlying mechanisms for our results are analyzed and discussed. However, it requires more observations and simulation studies to find out the mechanism of north‐south asymmetry. Approaches regarding how to turn the instrument background counts into scientifically valuable data are presented in this Technical Report on Methods. The background counts due to penetrating energetic particles of radiation belts detected on Cluster CIS HIA and CODIF instruments and the Double Star HIA instrument are used in these approaches. In HIA spectrograms, the background counts are seen simultaneously in all energy channels marking the entry and exit of the radiation belts by the spacecraft, therefore, the locations of the boundaries of the outer and inner belts can be determined. In the case when HIA measurements are not readily available, a new method is proposed in which supplementary data streams within the CODIF telemetry is exploited. It employs separate counts that register "start," "stop," and "non‐valid" signals increasing in the presence of penetrating particles even when no corresponding increase are shown in the energy‐time spectrograms. The locations of the radiation belt boundaries are defined by following the changes in counts gradients with time and visual inspection of all the available measurements. The July–August 2007 and September–October 2012 time periods are analyzed for method demonstration on a presence of a third radiation belt, or storage ring. We report a unique conjugate observation of fast flows and associated current sheet disturbances in the near‐Earth magnetotail by MMS (Magnetospheric Multiscale) and Cluster preceding a positive bay onset of a small substorm at ∼14:10 UT, September 8, 2018. MMS and Cluster were located both at X ∼ −14 RE. A dipolarization front (DF) of a localized fast flow was detected by Cluster and MMS, separated in the dawn‐dusk direction by ∼4 RE, almost simultaneously. Adiabatic electron acceleration signatures revealed from the comparison of the energy spectra confirm that both spacecraft encounter the same DF. We analyzed the change in the current sheet structure based on multi‐scale multi‐point data analysis. The current sheet thickened during the passage of DF, yet, temporally thinned subsequently associated with another flow enhancement centered more on the dawnward side of the initial flow. MMS and Cluster observed intense perpendicular and parallel current in the off‐equatorial region mainly during this interval of the current sheet thinning. Maximum field‐aligned currents both at MMS and Cluster are directed tailward. Detailed analysis of MMS data showed that the intense field‐aligned currents consisted of multiple small‐scale intense current layers accompanied by enhanced Hall‐currents in the dawn‐dusk flow‐shear region. We suggest that the current sheet thinning is related to the flow bouncing process and/or to the expansion/activation of reconnection. Based on these mesoscale and small‐scale multipoint observations, 3D evolution of the flow and current‐sheet disturbances was inferred preceding the development of a substorm current wedge. The ESA-JAXA BepiColombo mission to Mercury will provide simultaneous measurements from two spacecraft, offering an unprecedented opportunity to investigate magnetospheric and exospheric particle dynamics at Mercury as well as their interactions with solar wind, solar radiation, and interplanetary dust. The particle instrument suite SERENA (Search for Exospheric Refilling and Emitted Natural Abundances) is flying in space on-board the BepiColombo Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) and is the only instrument for ion and neutral particle detection aboard the MPO. It comprises four independent sensors: ELENA for neutral particle flow detection, Strofio for neutral gas detection, PICAM for planetary ions observations, and MIPA, mostly for solar wind ion measurements. SERENA is managed by a System Control Unit located inside the ELENA box. In the present paper the scientific goals of this suite are described, and then the four units are detailed, as well as their major features and calibration results. Finally, the SERENA operational activities are shown during the orbital path around Mercury, with also some reference to the activities planned during the long cruise phase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we reported the large-amplitude and fast-damped flapping of the plasma sheet, which co-occurred with magnetic reconnection. Data from the Double Star TC-1 and Cluster satellites were used to analyze the features of the plasma sheet flapping 1.4 RE earthward of an ongoing magnetic reconnection event. The flapping was rapidly damped, and its amplitude decreased from the magnetohydrodynamics scale to the subion scale in 5 min. The variation in the flapping period (from 224 to 20 s) indicated that the source of the flapping had highly dynamic temporal characteristics. The plasma sheet flapping propagated duskward through a kink-like wave with a velocity of 100 km/s, which was in agreement with the group velocity of the ballooning perturbation. A correlation analysis between the magnetic reconnection and plasma sheet flapping indicated that the magnetic reconnection likely facilitated the occurrence of ballooning instability by altering the state of plasma in the downstream plasma sheet. In this regard, the reconnection-induced ballooning instability could be a potential mechanism to generate the flapping motion of the plasma sheet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Baryonic matter in geospace is almost exclusively in a plasma state, with protons (H +) and to some extent ionized helium (He) and oxygen (O) being the dominant ion species. But also other heavier ion species and even molecular ions are present in geospace. The Research with Adaptive Particle Imaging Detectors (RAPID) on board the Cluster satellites can identify and characterize some of these ions by utilizing their measured time of flight and energy. Usually, the measurements are then assigned into three discrete species channels; protons (H +), helium (He), and a common channel for carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen (CNO), each with flux, energy, and angular information. But RAPID also has a Direct Event (DE) diagnostic mode in which the full time of flight and energy information for a limited number of incident particles are stored. With knowledge about energy losses in the various detector parts, it is then possible to derive the atomic mass of the incident particle. In this paper we report on results from a study of Cluster DE events during the years 2001–2018, with a particular emphasis of iron (Fe) ions. We show that suprathermal Fe ions can be found all over geospace covered by Cluster, and that the time variation is consistent with modulation by geomagnetic disturbances and solar activity. We do not find any clear correlations between detection of suprathermal Fe and meteor showers or sputtering off the moon. The foreshock, extending upstream of Earth's bow shock, is a region of intense electromagnetic wave activity and nonlinear phenomena, which can have global effects on geospace. It is also the first geophysical region encountered by solar wind disturbances journeying toward Earth. Here, we present the first observations of considerable modifications of the foreshock wave field during extreme events of solar origin called magnetic clouds. Cluster's multispacecraft data reveal that the typical quasi‐monochromatic foreshock waves can be completely replaced by a superposition of waves each with shorter correlation lengths. Global numerical simulations further confirm that the foreshock wave field is more intricate and organized at smaller scales. Ion measurements suggest that changes in shock‐reflected particle properties may cause these modifications of the wave field. This state of the foreshock is encountered only during extreme events at Earth, but intense magnetic fields are typical close to the Sun or other stars. Plain Language Summary: Solar storms are giant clouds of particles ejected from the Sun into space during solar eruptions. When solar storms are directed toward Earth, they can cause large disturbances in near‐Earth space, for example, disrupting communications or damaging spacecraft electronics. Understanding in detail what happens when solar storms reach Earth is crucial to mitigate their effects. Using measurements from the Cluster spacecraft, we investigate how solar storms modify the properties of the very first region of near‐Earth space they encounter when journeying toward Earth. This region, called the foreshock, extends ahead of the protective bubble formed by the Earth's magnetic field, the magnetosphere. The foreshock is home to intense electromagnetic waves, and disturbances in this region can perturb the Earth's magnetosphere. Our study reveals that solar storms modify profoundly the foreshock, resulting in a more complex wave activity. Global numerical simulations performed with the Vlasiator code confirm our findings. These changes could affect the regions of space closer to Earth, for example, in modifying the wave properties or the amount of solar particles entering the Earth's magnetosphere. This needs to be taken into account to better anticipate the effects of solar storms at Earth. Conjunction observations of the magnetic field and plasma by Cluster and TC‐1 at the dayside magnetosphere are presented to investigate the sequential flux ropes transferred from the low latitude boundary layer to the high‐altitude cusp on 10 March 2004.Three sequential flux ropes originating from the dayside low latitude magnetopause are first detected by TC‐1. After ~5.3 min, three sequential flux ropes accumulated with energetic oxygen ions are also detected by Cluster in the high‐altitude cusp. The recurrence period of these flux ropes is ~3 min. The number density of energetic oxygen ions in the cusp flux rope is ~0.25 cm−3 detected from CIS/CODF instrument on Cluster. It is found that oxygen ions with energy lager than 10 keV have a narrow pitch angle (less than 90°) distribution in the southern high‐altitude cusp. While oxygen ions with energy less than 10 keV are distributed in a wide pitch angle from 0 to 180°. Counter‐streaming energetic oxygen ions are found in these flux ropes in the high‐altitude cusp.This result suggests that the oxygen ions with energy less than 10 keV in the high‐altitude cusp have two source regions. One is from the dayside magnetopause, and the other is from the low‐altitude cusp. Our investigations first provide evidence that flux ropes at dayside low‐latitude magnetopause can carry energetic oxygen ions into the high‐altitude cusp region. The megaelectron volt proton radiation belts of Saturn are isolated from the middle and outer magnetosphere, and the source of these high‐energy protons is thought to be linked to the access of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) in the system. To validate this hypothesis, it is first of all necessary to determine the realistic spectrum of GCRs at Saturn. Previously, only analytical attempts were performed in order to calculate the GCR spectra. In this letter we provide for the first time the numerical solution for the determination of the GCR access to the upper atmosphere and rings of Saturn. The proposed method is based on the charged particle tracing technique. As a result the GCRs access energies to the atmosphere and to the equatorial plane of the magnetosphere as a function of radial distance to the planet were obtained and the GCRs spectra were reconstructed. Dependencies of the spectral parameters such as the time or the incidence direction were also obtained offering all necessary information for simulating the interaction of GCRs with the Saturnian system during different phases of the Cassini mission. Due to its polar orbit Cluster spacecraft crossed plasmaspheric plumes out of the magnetic equatorial plane. We study the occurrence of broadband, narrowband, and rising tone emissions in the plume vicinity, below the local proton gyrofrequency. Based on a database of 935 Cluster plumes crossings, reduced to 189 unique plumes, we find that broadband activity is the most common case. We confirm result from a previous study showing that plume vicinity is not a preferred place for observing narrowband emissions. Rising tones are the less frequently observed of these three kinds of emissions. Nevertheless, ElectroMagnetic Ion Cyclotron (EMIC) rising tone occurrence rate is high compared to the narrowband one: Tones are seen in six of 30 plume events (20%) when narrowband emissions are observed. Rising tones are observed at absolute magnetic latitudes larger than 17° and up to 35° . We detail the 16 August 2005 plume crossing when a rising tone is observed. Results of a ray tracing analysis agree with a tone triggering process taking place above 15° of magnetic latitude. Abstract: The influence of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) cone angle θ (the angle between the IMF direction and the Sun‐Earth line) on the invariant latitudes of the footprints of the field‐aligned currents (FACs) in the magnetotail has been investigated. We performed a statistical study of 542 FAC cases observed by the four Cluster spacecraft in the Northern Hemisphere. The results show that there are almost no FACs when the IMF cone angle is less than 10°, and there are indications of the FACs in the plasma sheet boundary layers being weak under the radial IMF conditions. The footprints of the large FAC (>10 nA/m2) cases are within invariant latitudes <71° and mainly within IMF cone angles θ > 60°, which implies that the footprints of the large FACs mainly expand equatorward with large IMF cone angle. The equatorward boundary of the FAC footprints in the polar region decreases with increasing IMF cone angle (and has a better correlation for northward IMF), which shows that the IMF cone angle plays an important controlling role in FAC distributions in the magnetosphere‐ionosphere coupling system. There is almost no correlation between the poleward boundary and the IMF cone angle for both northward and southward IMF. This is because the poleward boundary movement is limited by an enhanced lobe magnetic flux. Singly charged oxygen ions, O+, energized by kinetic Alfvén wave eigenmode (KAWE) in the plasma sheet boundary layer during dipolarizations of two intense substorms, 10:07 UT on 31 August 2004 and 18:24 UT on 14 September 2004, are investigated by Cluster spacecraft in the magnetotail. It is found that after the beginning of the expansion phase of substorms, O+ ions are clearly energized in the direction perpendicular to the magnetic field with energy larger than 1 keV in the near-Earth plasma sheet during magnetic dipolarizations. The pitch angle distribution of these energetic O+ ions is significantly different from that of O+ ions with energy less than 1 keV before substorm onset that is in the quasi-parallel direction along the magnetic field. The KAWE with the large perpendicular unipolar electric field, Ez ~ −20 mV/m, significantly accelerates O+ ions in the direction perpendicular to the background magnetic field. We present good evidences that O+ ion origin from the ionosphere along the magnetic field line in the northward lobe can be accelerated in the perpendicular direction during substorm dipolarizations. The change of the move direction of O+ ions is useful for O+ transferring from the lobe into the central plasma sheet in the magnetotail. Thus, KAWE can play an important role in O+ ion transfer process from the lobe into the plasma sheet during intense substorms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding changes in the magnetospheric mass density during disturbed geomagnetic conditions provides valuable insight into the dynamics and structure of the environment. The mass density plays a significant role in a variety of magnetospheric processes, such as wave propagation, magnetic reconnection rates, and radiation belt dynamics. In this study, the spatial variations of total plasma mass density are explored through the analysis of Cluster observations. Data from the WHISPER (Waves of High frequency and Sounder for Probing of Electron density by Relaxation) and CODIF (ion Composition and Distribution Function analyzer) instruments, on board the four Cluster spacecraft for a time interval spanning 2001-2012, are used to determine empirical models describing the distribution of the total plasma mass density along closed geomagnetic field lines. The region considered covers field lines within 5.9≤ L < 9.5, corresponding to the outer plasmasphere, plasmatrough, and near-Earth plasma sheet. This study extends previous work to examine and quantify spatial variations in the electron density, average ion mass, and total plasma mass density with D s t index. The results indicate that during periods of enhanced ring current strength, electron density is observed to decrease and average ion mass is observed to increase, compared with quiet geomagnetic conditions. The combination of these variations shows that although heavy ion concentration is enhanced, the decrease in plasma number density results in a general decrease in total plasma mass density during disturbed geomagnetic conditions. The observed decrease in mass density is in contrast to prevailing understanding and, due to the dependence of the Alfvén speed on mass density, has important implications for a range of plasma processes during storm time conditions (e.g., propagation of wave modes). Magnetospheric plasma sheet ions drift toward the Earth and populate the ring current. The ring current plasma pressure distorts the terrestrial internal magnetic field at the surface, and this disturbance strongly affects the strength of a magnetic storm. The contribution of energetic ions (>40 keV) and of heavy ions to the total plasma pressure in the near-Earth plasma sheet is not always considered. In this study, we evaluate the contribution of low-energy and energetic ions of different species to the total plasma pressure for the storm observed by the Cluster mission from 27 September until 3 October 2002. We show that the contribution of energetic ions (>40 keV) and of heavy ions to the total plasma pressure is ≃76-98.6% in the ring current and ≃14-59% in the magnetotail. The main source of oxygen ions, responsible for ≃56% of the plasma pressure of the ring current, is located at distances earthward of XGSE ≃ −13.5 R E during the main phase of the storm. The contribution of the ring current particles agrees with the observed D s t index. We model the magnetic storm using the Space Weather Modeling Framework (SWMF). We assess the plasma pressure output in the ring current for two different ion outflow models in the SWMF through comparison with observations. Both models yield reasonable results. Electric currents flowing through near-Earth space (R ≤12RE) can support a highly distorted magnetic field topology, changing particle drift paths and therefore having a nonlinear feedback on the currents themselves. A number of current systems exist in the magnetosphere, most commonly defined as (1) the dayside magnetopause Chapman-Ferraro currents, (2) the Birkeland field-aligned currents with highlatitude "region 1" and lower-latitude "region 2" currents connected to the partial ring current, (3) the magnetotail currents, and (4) the symmetric ring current. In the near-Earth nightside region, however, several of these current systems flow in close proximity to each other. Moreover, the existence of other temporal current systems, such as the substorm current wedge or "banana" current, has been reported. It is very difficult to identify a local measurement as belonging to a specific system. Such identification is important, however, because how the current closes and how these loops change in space and time governs the magnetic topology of the magnetosphere and therefore controls the physical processes of geospace. Furthermore, many methods exist for identifying the regions of near-Earth space carrying each type of current. This study presents a robust collection of these definitions of current systems in geospace, particularly in the near- Earth nightside magnetosphere, as viewed from a variety of observational and computational analysis techniques. The ion composition experiment on Cluster measures 3-D distributions in one spin of the spacecraft (4 s). These distributions often measure field-aligned ion beams (H+, He+ and O+) accelerated out of the ionosphere. The standard model of these beams relies on a quasi-static Ushaped potential model. The beams contain important information about the structure and distribution of the U-shaped potential structures. For example, a simple beam with a narrow velocity range tells us that the particles are accelerated going through a quasi-static U-shaped potential structure localized in space. A more complex beam with a large range of velocities varying smoothly (a few tens of kilometers per second to >100 km s-1) tells us that the potential structure is extended and distributed along the magnetic field. The Cluster experiment has now revealed new features about the beams. Some beams are broken into many individual structures each with their own velocity. The U-shaped potential model would interpret the new features in terms of particles accelerated by narrow isolated potential structures maintained over an extended region of the magnetic field. Another interpretation is that these features arise as Cluster traverses toward the center of a small-scale U-shaped potential region detecting particles accelerated on different equipotential contours. The estimate of the distance of the adjacent contours is ~590-610m at a Cluster height of ~3.5RE. The observed dimensions map to ~ 295-305m in the ionosphere, suggesting Cluster has measured the potential structure of an auroral arc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Numerous observations have shown that ions flow out of the ionosphere during substorms with more fluxes leaving as the substorm intensity increases (Wilson et al., 2004). In this article we show observations of low-energy (few tens of electron volts) ionospheric ions flowing out periods without substorms, determined using the Wideband Imaging Camera (WIC) and Auroral Electrojet (AE) indices. We use Cluster ion composition data and show the outflowing ions are field-aligned H+, He+ and O+ beams accelerated to energies of ~ 40-80 eV, after correcting for spacecraft potential. The estimated fluxes of the low-energy O+ ions measured at ~ 20 000 km altitude are > 103-105 cm-2 s. Assuming the auroral oval is the source of the escaping ions, the measured fluxes correspond to a flow rate of ~ 1019-1021 ions s-1 leaving the ionosphere. However, periods without substorms can persist for hours suggesting the lowenergy ions flowing out during these times could be a major source of the heavy ion population in the plasma sheet and lobe. Flux transfer events (FTEs) are signatures of transient reconnection at the dayside magnetopause, transporting flux from the dayside of the magnetosphere into the magnetotail lobes. They have previously been observed to contain a combination of magnetosheath and magnetospheric plasma. On 12 February 2007, the four Cluster spacecraft were widely separated across the magnetopause and observed a crater-like FTE as they crossed the Earth's dayside magnetopause through its low-latitude boundary layer. The particle instruments on the Cluster spacecraft were in burst mode and returning data providing 3-D velocity distribution functions (VDFs) at 4 s resolution during the observation of this FTE. Moreover, the magnetic field observed during the event remained closely aligned with the spacecraft spin axis and thus we have been able to use these 3-D data to reconstruct nearly full pitch angle distributions of electrons and ions at high time resolution (up to 32 times faster than available from the normal mode data stream). These observations within the boundary layer and inside the core of the FTE show that both the interior and the surrounding structure of the FTE consist of multiple individual layers of plasma, in greater number than previously identified. Our observations show a cold plasma inside the core, a thin layer of antiparallel-moving electrons at the edge of FTE itself, and field-aligned ions with Alfvénic speeds at the trailing edge of the FTE. We discuss the plasma characteristics in these FTE layers, their possible relevance to the magnetopause reconnection processes and attempt to distinguish which of the various different FTE models may be relevant in this case. Energy–latitude dispersed structured sub-keV ions in the inner magnetosphere often show significant development or intensification (by more than factor of 3) within 1–2 h near noon or afternoon where the azimuthal ion drift velocity at the sub-keV range is expected to be near zero. To examine whether such sudden appearances in the day-side can be explained by the drift motion of ions that are formed during substorm-related injections, we numerically simulated two such examples, one at noon and the other in the afternoon, based on the ion drift model. For both cases, the ion drift model with finite duration of proton source in the nightside can explain the observed large inbound–outbound differences in the sub-keV proton population without any new sources. Ion drift motion can thus cause rapid changes of complicated ion populations, at remote places from the source a long time after the substorm activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In an attempt to study the flow bursts in the Earth's plasma sheet we select an event that took place on August 7, 2004 in the expansion phase of a substorm, using data from the geomagnetic index, solar wind data, plasma and magnetic field observations from C1 Cluster satellite (the Cluster mission has 4 satellites) and from Double Star TC-1 satellite. In MHD approach, TC-1 firstly observed the tailward flow, then the earthward, and finally the flow alternated in two directions. C1 firstly observed the earthward plasma flow, and then the tailward plasma flow. Before flow bursts are observed by TC-1 and C1, there are disturbances in local entropy with their tailward local entropy larger than those of the earthward. The kinetic features of the plasma flow observed by C1 are similar to those in MHD. However, kinetic characteristics of the plasma flow observed by TC-1 are far more than the description in MHD. The inadequacy mainly exists in two cases: (i) the firstly enhanced tailward flows given in MHD are found without significant increase of the energetic tailward flux; (ii) the almost stagnant flow in MHD is composed of the enhanced energetic ion flux in both earthward and tailward directions. The earthward flow burst observed by TC-1 might be multiple overshoots and rebounds. The earthward flow burst observed by C1 might be simply rebounded in the near-Earth. The pulsation observed by C1 is earlier than that observed by TC-1 with the former intensity less than that of the latter. After the energetic ion flux in the tailward direction is significantly enhanced, the power spectrum intensity of the ULF wave commences to increase obviously, which may suggest that the stream instability is closely correlated with ULF pulsations. The Hot Ion Analyser (HIA), part of the Cluster Ion Spectrometry experiment, has the objective to measure the three-dimensional velocity distributions of ions. Due to a variety of factors (exposure to radiation, detector fatigue and aging, changes in the operating parameters, etc.), the particles' detection efficiency changes over time, prompting for continuous in-flight calibration. This is achieved by comparing the HIA data with the data provided by the WHISPER (Waves of HIgh frequency and Sounder for Probing of Electron density by Relaxation) experiment on magnetosheath intervals, for the high-sensitivity section of the instrument, or solar wind intervals, for the low-sensitivity section. The paper presents in detail the in-flight calibration methodology, reports on the work carried out for calibrating HIA and discusses plans to extend this activity in order to ensure the instrument's highest data accuracy. In this work we perform a statistical analysis of 92 foreshock cavitons observed with the Cluster spacecraft 1 during the period 2001-2006.We analyze time intervals during which the spacecraft was located in the Earth's foreshock with durations longer than 10 min. Together these amount to ∼50 days. The cavitons are transient structures in the Earth's foreshock. Their main signatures in the data include simultaneous depletions of the magnetic field intensity and plasma density, which are surrounded by a rim of enhanced values of these two quantities. Cavitons form due to nonlinear interaction of transverse and compressive ultra-low frequency (ULF) waves and are therefore always surrounded by intense compressive ULF fluctuations. They are carried by the solar wind towards the bow shock. This work represents the first systematic study of a large sample of foreshock cavitons. We find that cavitons appear for a wide range of solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field conditions and are therefore a common feature upstream of Earth's quasiparallel bow shock with an average occurrence rate of ∼2 events per day.We also discuss their observational properties in the context of other known upstream phenomena and show that the cavitons are a distinct structure in the foreshock.
