Spectroscopy is widely used in biomedicine, agriculture, remote sensing, industrial process monitoring, etc. The emerging on‐chip integration techniques further extend these applications to on‐site and portable operating modes. However, realizing high‐applicability and low‐cost spectroscopy chips is still a major challenge particularly in infrared due to the requirements on a large number of spectral channels. Here, a compact and low‐cost near‐infrared spectral sensing platform is demonstrated, releasing the burden of scaling up the spectral channel and simultaneously keeping a high accuracy in chemical classification. The monolithically integrated spectral sensor consists of a small amount of plasmon‐modulated narrowband photodetection units and operates with on‐chip photoelectric responses via a statistical machine learning method. Both plasmonic resonances with low spectral correlation and advanced regression algorithms contribute to high sensing accuracy in the case of limited hardware resources. Chemical concentration quantification, plastic sorting, and scanning spectral imaging are realized using such a sensor with up to twelve spectral channels. This concept avoids the uncertainty of various spectral reconstruction algorithms, high cost, and processing complexity and therefore provides promising strategies for miniaturized spectral sensing platforms. By combining information such as genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics data, multiomics methodologies have the potential to reveal the otherwise invisible processes of carcinogenesis. Using these data, a new-generation point-of-care (POC) device may support patient care through rapid diagnosis involving accurate and simultaneous multiomics measurements. In this work, we present a proof-of-concept portable system capable of measuring a metabolite (glutamate) and a protein [proteolytically active prostate-specific antigen (aPSA)] simultaneously on a single device in a 2-min interval using on-chip optical methods. The device has the potential to improve the current diagnostic pathways of prostate cancer (PCa) by reducing the high false-positive rate with the widely used total prostate-specific antigen (tPSA) test. We demonstrate a simultaneous assay of glutamate and aPSA in buffer and synthetic urine. For the glutamate assay, the limit of detection (LOD) and resolution were found to be 0.9 and $2.7 {\boldsymbol {\mu }}\text{M}$ , respectively. The LOD and resolution for aPSA were 0.5 and 2.0 ng $/$ ml, respectively. The LOD and resolution achieved using this device are, therefore, in line with human physiological ranges. The platform is suitable for accommodating two independent optical assays, and, therefore, chemistry can be modified to measure different analytes regardless of their nature. Spectatorship is a core element of esports. Short for "electronic sports," esports encompasses organized, professional competitive videogaming practices produced and consumed as a spectator sport. Esports' computerized nature grants it a placeless quality, which creates ambiguities around what authentic esports spectatorship ought to be. Notably, some notions theorized prior to the emergence of contemporary esports imply that authenticity and placelessness are incompatible. We address this conundrum by presenting an ethnographic study conducted at an esports bar; a venue designed for the spectatorship of esports alongside other fans and alcohol consumption. While embodying seemingly placeless qualities, esports spectatorship nevertheless takes place in situated places. We found spectators at the bar worked to authenticate their spectatorship by drawing on conventions of legitimacy, professionalism, and spectacle from elsewhere, particularly spectator sports. To develop a model to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of 4 mg dibotermin alfa/absorbable collagen sponge (ACS) versus iliac crest bone graft (ICBG) in patients with lumbar degenerative disc disease in the United Kingdom. A Markov decision-analytic model was constructed to calculate costs and quality-adjusted life-years over a 4-year time horizon in each treatment group, from a United Kingdom National Health Service perspective. An individual patient data meta-analysis was undertaken to synthesize data from four randomized controlled trials and two single-arm studies concerning health-related quality of life and procedural resource use. Current cost data from the United Kingdom were then applied to determine the overall mean cost per patient in each group. One-way and probabilistic sensitivity analyses were undertaken to explore the impact of parameter uncertainty. The model predicted 4-year discounted cost savings of £192 per patient treated with dibotermin alfa/ACS, compared with ICBG, and a gain of 0.0114 QALYs per patient over the same time period. Sensitivity analyses indicated that the results were most sensitive to variability in the differences in health-related quality of life and secondary surgery rate, with dibotermin alfa/ACS having a 60% probability of being cost-effective at a willingness-to-pay threshold of £20,000 per QALY gained. There is uncertainty in the difference in cost and QALYs between the two groups. However, comprehensive sensitivity analyses were undertaken to explore this and present the results in a transparent manner. Background: To date, the process of adaptation in the setting of aesthetic medicine has not been investigated. The combination of complex advanced feedback in the current intense social media milieu, in conjunction with easily accessible and effective aesthetic treatments, has produced pockets of overtreated patients and over-zealous practitioners. We examine whether aesthetic assessments of attractiveness and what appears natural can be distorted by the cognitive process of adaptation. Methods: Forty-eight female participants were exposed to photographs of female faces in whom lip fullness had been strongly under- or over-exaggerated, while remaining within the bounds of natural appearing lips. Before and after evaluation of the exaggerated images, participants were asked to rate an alternative set of faces in terms of attractiveness (reflecting direct assessment of effective beauty impression) and naturalness (reflecting indirect assessment of beauty norms). The evaluation set consisted of six base faces that had been digitally altered to create a systematically varying 11 step set of lip sizes from extremely thin, to the original version, to very full. Results: Second-order polynomial fits indicated clear shifts of the subjects' facial aesthetic assessments towards the specific lip fullness of the adaptors. In contrast, such adaptions were not found for ratings of face naturalness. In contrast to research demonstrating mathematical foundations and unchanging rules governing perceptions of beauty, we show that simple viewing of exaggerated feature morphologies can rapidly result in recalibration of a person's assessment of attractiveness. Conclusion: This paper provides evidence that facial attractiveness is fluid, and that there are psychological mechanisms that cause an aesthetic bias. We present the first realisation of simultaneous multi‐spectral fluorescence imaging using a single‐photon avalanche diode (SPAD) array, where the spectral unmixing is facilitated by a plasmonic metasurface mosaic colour filter array (CFA). A 64 × 64 pixel format silicon SPAD array is used to record widefield fluorescence and brightfield data from four biological samples. A plasmonic metasurface composed of an arrangement of circular and elliptical nanoholes etched into an aluminium thin film deposited on a glass substrate provides the high transmission efficiency CFA, enabling a bespoke spectral unmixing algorithm to reconstruct high fidelity, full colour images from as few as ∼3 photons per pixel. This approach points the way toward real‐time, single‐photon sensitive multi‐spectral fluorescence imaging. Furthermore, this is possible without additional bulky components such as a filter wheel, prism or diffraction grating, nor the need for multiple sample exposures or multiple detectors. There is a global unmet need for rapid and cost-effective prognostic and diagnostic tools that can be used at the bedside or in the doctor's office to reduce the impact of serious disease. Many cancers are diagnosed late, leading to costly treatment and reduced life expectancy. With prostate cancer, the absence of a reliable test has inhibited the adoption of screening programs. We report a microelectronic point-of-care metabolite biomarker measurement platform and use it for prostate cancer detection. The platform, using an array of photodetectors configured to operate with targeted, multiplexed, colorimetric assays confined in monolithically integrated passive microfluidic channels, completes a combined assay of 4 metabolites in a drop of human plasma in under 2 min. A preliminary clinical study using l-amino acids, glutamate, choline, and sarcosine was used to train a cross-validated random forest algorithm. The system demonstrated sensitivity to prostate cancer of 94% with a specificity of 70% and an area under the curve of 0.78. We demonstrate a proof of concept highly miniaturised fluorescence imager and its application to detecting cancer in resected human colon cancer tissues. Fluorescence imaging modalities have already been successfully implemented in traditional endoscopy. However, the procedure still causes discomfort and requires sedation. Wireless fluorescence capsule endoscopy has the potential to improve diagnostic accuracy with less inconvenience for patients. In this paper we present a 5 mm $\times6$ mm $\times5$ mm optical block that is small enough to integrate into a capsule endoscope. The block integrates ultrathin filters for optical isolation and was successfully integrated with a sensitive CMOS SPAD array to detect green fluorescence from Flavin Adenine Dinucleotide (FAD), which is an endogenous fluorophore responsible for autofluorescence in human tissues, and fluorescence from the cancer selective molecular probe ProteoGREEN™-gGlu used to label colorectal cancer cells. In vitro studies were validated using a commercial Modulus™ Microplate reader. The potential use of the device in capsule endoscopy was further validated by imaging healthy and malignant resected human tissues from the colon to detect changes in autofluorescence signal that are crucial for cancer diagnosis. Objective: Early stage diagnosis of sepsis without overburdening health services is essential to improving patient outcomes. Methods: A fast and simple-to-use platform that combines an integrated circuit with paper microfluidics for simultaneous detection of multiple-metabolites appropriate for diagnostics was presented. Paper based sensors are a primary candidate for widespread deployment of diagnostic or test devices. However, the majority of devices today use a simple paper strip to detect a single marker using the reflectance of light. However, for many diseases such as sepsis, one biomarker is not sufficient to make a unique diagnosis. In this work multiple measurements are made on patterned paper simultaneously. Using laser ablation to fabricate microfluidic channels on paper provides a flexible and direct approach for mass manufacture of disposable paper strips. A reusable photodiode array on a complementary metal oxide semiconductor chip is used as the transducer. Results: The system measures changes in optical absorbance in the paper to achieve a cost-effective and easily implemented system that is capable of multiple simultaneous assays. Potential sepsis metabolite biomarkers glucose and lactate have been studied and quantified with the platform, achieving sensitivity within the physiological range in human serum. Conclusion: We have detailed a disposable paper-based CMOS photodiode sensor platform for real-time simultaneous detection of metabolites for diseases such as sepsis. Significance: A combination of a low-cost paper strip with microfluidic channels and a sensitive CMOS photodiode sensor array makes our platform a robust portable and inexpensive biosensing device for multiple diagnostic tests in many different applications. Purpose: To compare rates of persistent postoperative pain (PPP) after lumbar spine surgery—commonly known as Failed Back Surgery Syndrome—and healthcare costs for instrumented lumbar spinal fusion versus decompression/discectomy. Methods: The UK population-based healthcare data from the Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) database from NHS Digital and the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) were queried to identify patients with PPP following lumbar spinal surgery. Rates of PPP were calculated by type of surgery (instrumented and non-instrumented). Total healthcare costs associated with the surgery and covering the 24-month period after index hospital discharge were estimated using standard methods for classifying health care encounters into major categories of health care resource utilization (i.e., inpatient hospital stays, outpatient clinic visits, accident and emergency attendances, primary care encounters, and medications prescribed in primary care) and applying the appropriate unit costs (expressed in 2013 GBP). Results: Increasing the complexity of surgery with instrumentation was not associated with an increased rate of PPP. However, 2-year healthcare costs following discharge after surgery are significantly higher among patients who underwent instrumented surgery compared with decompression/discectomy. Conclusions: Although there is a not insubstantial risk of ongoing pain following spine surgery, with 1-in-5 patients experiencing PPP within 2 years of surgery, the underlying indications for surgical modality and related choice of surgical procedure do not, by itself, appear to be a driving factor. Precision metabolomics and quantification for cost-effective rapid diagnosis of disease are the key goals in personalized medicine and point-of-care testing. At present, patients are subjected to multiple test procedures requiring large laboratory equipment. Microelectronics has already made modern computing and communications possible by integration of complex functions within a single chip. As More than Moore technology increases in importance, integrated circuits for densely patterned sensor chips have grown in significance. Here, we present a versatile single complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor chip forming a platform to address personalized needs through on-chip multimodal optical and electrochemical detection that will reduce the number of tests that patients must take. The chip integrates interleaved sensing subsystems for quadruple-mode colorimetric, chemiluminescent, surface plasmon resonance, and hydrogen ion measurements. These subsystems include a photodiode array and a single photon avalanche diode array with some elements functionalized to introduce a surface plasmon resonance mode. The chip also includes an array of ion sensitive field-effect transistors. The sensor arrays are distributed uniformly over an active area on the chip surface in a scalable and modular design. Bio-functionalization of the physical sensors yields a highly selective simultaneous multiple-assay platform in a disposable format. We demonstrate its versatile capabilities through quantified bio-assays performed on-chip for glucose, cholesterol, urea, and urate, each within their naturally occurring physiological range. We present the design and application of a $64\times 64$ pixel SPAD array to portable colorimetric sensing, and fluorescence and x-ray imaging. The device was fabricated on an unmodified 180 nm CMOS process and is based on a square p+/n active junction SPAD geometry suitable for detecting green fluorescence emission. The stand-alone SPAD shows a photodetection probability greater than 60% at 5 V excess bias, with a dark count rate of less than 4 cps/ $\mu \text{m}^{\mathbf {2}}$ and sub-ns timing jitter performance. It has a global shutter with an in-pixel 8-bit counter; four 5-bit decoders and two 64-to-1 multiplexer blocks allow the data to be read-out. The array of sensors was able to detect fluorescence from a fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) solution down to a concentration of 900 pM with an SNR of 9.8 dB. A colorimetric assay was performed on top of the sensor array with a limit of quantification of $3.1~\mu \text{m}$. An increasing global aridification due to climate change has made the health monitoring of vegetation indispensable to maintaining the food supply chain. Cost-effective and smart irrigation systems are required not only to ensure the efficient distribution of water, but also to track the moisture of plant leaves, which is an important marker of the overall health of the plant. This paper presents a novel electromagnetic method to monitor the water content (WC) and characterisation in plant leaves using the absorption spectra of water molecules in the terahertz (THz) frequency for four consecutive days. We extracted the material properties of leaves of eight types of pot herbs from the scattering parameters, measured using a material characterisation kit in the frequency range of 0.75 to 1.1 THz. From the computed permittivity, it is deduced that the leaf specimens increasingly become transparent to the THz waves as they dry out with the passage of days. Moreover, the loss in weight and thickness of leaves were observed due to the natural evaporation of leaf moisture cells and change occurred in the morphology of fresh and water-stressed leaves. It is also illustrated that loss observed in WC on day 1 was in the range of 5% to 22%, and increased from 83.12% to 99.33% on day 4. Furthermore, we observed an exponential decaying trend in the peaks of the real part of the permittivity from day 1 to 4, which was reminiscent of the trend observed in the weight of all leaves. Thus, results in paper demonstrated that timely detection of water stress in leaves can help to take proactive action in relation to plants health monitoring, and for precision agriculture applications, which is of high importance to improve the overall productivity. Purpose: To assess the likelihood of persistent postoperative pain (PPP) following reoperation after lumbar surgery and to estimate associated healthcare costs.Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study using two linked UK databases: Hospital Episode Statistics and UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink. Costs and outcomes associated with reoperation were evaluated over a 2-year postoperative period using multivariate logistic regression for cases who underwent reoperation and controls who did not, based on demographics, index surgery type, smoking status, and pre-index comorbidities using propensity score matching.Results: Risk factors associated with reoperation included younger age and the presence of diabetes with complications or rheumatic disease. The rate of PPP after reoperation was much higher than after index surgery, with 79 of 200 (39.5%; 95% CI 32.5%, 46.5%) participants experiencing ongoing pain compared with 983 of 5022 (19.5%; 95% CI 18.5%, 20.7%) after index surgery. Mean costs in the 2 years following reoperation were £1889 higher (95% CI £2, £3809) than for patients with PPP who did not undergo repeat surgery over an equivalent follow-up period. With the cost of reoperation itself included, the mean cost difference for patients who underwent reoperation compared with matched controls rose to £7221 (95% CI £5273, £9206).Conclusions: High rates of PPP and associated healthcare costs suggest that returning to the operating room is a complex and challenging decision. Spinal surgeons should review whether the potential benefits of additional surgery are justified when other approaches to managing and relieving chronic pain have demonstrated superior outcomes. The measurement of nanophotonic sensors currently requires the use of external measuring equipment for their read-out such as an optical spectrum analyzer, spectrophotometer, or detectors. This requirement of external laboratory-based measuring equipment creates a “chip-in-a-lab” dilemma and hinders the use of nanophotonic sensors in practical applications. Making nanophotonic sensors usable in everyday life requires miniaturization of not only the sensor chip itself but also the equipment used for its measurement. In this paper, we have removed the need of external measuring equipment by monolithically integrating 1-D grating structures with a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) integrated circuit having an array of photodiodes. By doing so, we get a direct electrical read-out of the refractive index changes induced when applying different analytes to grating structures. The gratings are made of CMOS compatible silicon nitride. Employing a nanophotonic sensor made of CMOS compatible material allows fabrication of the integrated sensor chip in a commercial CMOS foundry, enabling mass production for commercialization with low cost. Our results present a significant step toward transforming present laboratory-based nanophotonic sensors into practical portable devices to enable applications away from the analytical laboratory. Abstract: The planar Gunn diode offers the potential of microwave, milli‐metric and THz‐based oscillators, which can be fabricated as part of a microwave monolithic integrated circuit (mmic). The paper develops an electrical representation of an aluminum gallium arsenide (AlGaAs) based planar Gunn diode with an active channel length of approximately 4 μm and width of 120 μm, embedded in an oscillator circuit. Metabolites are the ultimate readout of disease phenotype that plays a significant role in the study of human disease. Multiple metabolites sometimes serve as biomarkers for a single metabolic disease. Therefore, simultaneous detection and analysis of those metabolites facilitate early diagnostics of the disease. Conventional approaches to detect and quantify metabolites include mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance that require bulky and expensive equipment. Here, we present a disposable sensing platform that is based on complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor process. It contains two sensors: an ion sensitive field-effect transistor and photodiode that can work independently for detection of pH and color change produced during the metabolite-enzyme reaction. Serum glucose and cholesterol have been detected and quantified simultaneously with the new platform, which shows good sensitivity within the physiological range. We have designed, simulated, and experimentally demonstrated four-colour mid-infrared (mid-IR) Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) integrated monolithically into a vertical structure on a semiinsulating GaAs substrate. In order to finely control the peak wavelength of the emitted mid-IR light, quantum well (QW) structures based on AlInSb/InSb/AlInSb are employed. The completed device structure consists of three p-QW-n diodes with different well widths stacked on top of one bulk AlInSb p-i-n diode. The epitaxial layers comprising the device are designed in such a way that one contact layer is shared between two LEDs. The design of the heterostructure realising the multispectral LEDs was aided by numerical modelling, and good agreement is observed between the simulated and experimental results. Electro-Luminescence measurements, carried out at room temperature, confirm that the emission of each LED peaks at a different wavelength. Peak wavelengths of 3.40 lm, 3.50 lm, 3.95 lm, and 4.18 lm are observed in the bulk, 2 nm, 4 nm, and 6 nm quantum well LEDs, respectively. Under zero bias, Fourier Transform Infrared photo-response measurements indicate that these fabricated diodes can also be operated as mid-IR photodetectors with an extended cut-off wavelength up to 4.6 lm. Objective To characterise incidence and healthcare costs associated with persistent postoperative pain (PPP) following lumbar surgery. Design Retrospective, population-based cohort study. Setting Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) and Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) databases. Participants Population-based cohort of 10 216 adults who underwent lumbar surgery in England from 1997/1998 through 2011/2012 and had at least 1 year of presurgery data and 2 years of postoperative follow-up data in the linked CPRD-HES. Primary and secondary outcomes measures Incidence and total healthcare costs over 2, 5 and 10 years attributable to persistent PPP following initial lumbar surgery. Results The rate of individuals undergoing lumbar surgery in the CPRD-HES linked data doubled over the 15-year study period, fiscal years 1997/1998 to 2011/2012, from 2.5 to 4.9 per 10 000 adults. Over the most recent 5-year period (2007/2008 to 2011/2012), on average 20.8% (95% CI 19.7% to 21.9%) of lumbar surgery patients met criteria for PPP. Rates of healthcare usage were significantly higher for patients with PPP across all types of care. Over 2 years following initial spine surgery, the mean cost difference between patients with and without PPP was £5383 (95% CI £4872 to £5916). Over 5 and 10 years following initial spine surgery, the mean cost difference between patients with and without PPP increased to £10 195 (95% CI £8726 to £11 669) and £14 318 (95% CI £8386 to £19 771), respectively. Extrapolated to the UK population, we estimate that nearly 5000 adults experience PPP after spine surgery annually, with each new cohort costing the UK National Health Service in excess of £70 million over the first 10 years alone. Conclusions Persistent pain affects more than one-in-five lumbar surgery patients and accounts for substantial long-term healthcare costs. Video capsule endoscopy (VCE) is now a clinically accepted diagnostic modality in which miniaturized technology, an on-board power supply and wireless telemetry stand as technological foundations for other capsule endoscopy (CE) devices. However, VCE does not provide therapeutic functionality, and research towards therapeutic CE (TCE) has been limited. In this paper, a route towards viable TCE is proposed, based on multiple CE devices including important acoustic sensing and drug delivery components. In this approach, an initial multimodal diagnostic device with high-frequency quantitative microultrasound that complements video imaging allows surface and subsurface visualization and computer-assisted diagnosis. Using focused ultrasound (US) to mark sites of pathology with exogenous fluorescent agents permits follow-up with another device to provide therapy. This is based on an US-mediated targeted drug delivery system with fluorescence imaging guidance. An additional device may then be utilized for treatment verification and monitoring, exploiting the minimally invasive nature of CE. While such a theranostic patient pathway for gastrointestinal treatment is presently incomplete, the description in this paper of previous research and work under way to realize further components for the proposed pathway suggests it is feasible and provides a framework around which to structure further work. The transformation of nanophotonic sensors from laboratory-based demonstrations to a portable system to ensure widespread applicability in everyday life requires their integration with detectors for direct electrical read out. As complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology has revolutionized the electronics industry, the integration of nanophotonic structures with CMOS technology will also transform the sensing market. However, nanophotonic sensors have to fulfill certain requirements for their integration with CMOS detectors, such as operation in the visible wavelength range, operation in normal incidence configuration, use of CMOS compatible materials, and capability to give large optical intensity change due to resonance wavelength shift. In this paper, we have designed and developed one-dimensional silicon nitride grating structures that satisfy all these conditions simultaneously. The gratings can achieve 1 and 6 nm linewidths for the transverse-electric (TE) and transverse-magnetic (TM) polarizations, respectively, with 90% resonance depth. The experimental linewidth is 8 nm with 55% resonance depth, which is limited by the detector resolution. The experimental sensitivity of the device is 160 nm/refractive index unit (RIU), which translates to a very high intensity sensitivity of 1700%/RIU, which would enable sensing of very small changes in refractive index when integrated with a detector. Elevated cholesterol levels are associated with a greater risk of developing cardiovascular disease and other illnesses, making it a prime candidate for detection on a disposable biosensor for rapid point of care diagnostics. One of the methods to quantify cholesterol levels in human blood serum uses an optically mediated enzyme assay and a bench top spectrophotometer. The bulkiness and power hungry nature of the equipment limits its usage to laboratories. Here, we present a new disposable sensing platform that is based on a complementary metal oxide semiconductor process for total cholesterol quantification in pure blood serum. The platform that we implemented comprises readily mass-manufacturable components that exploit the colorimetric changes of cholesterol oxidase and cholesterol esterase reactions. We have shown that our quantification results are comparable to that obtained by a bench top spectrophotometer. Using the implemented device, we have measured cholesterol concentration in human blood serum as low as 29 \mu \textM with a limit of detection at 13 \mu \textM , which is approximately 400 times lower than average physiological range, implying that our device also has the potential to be used for applications that require greater sensitivity. Spatial overlap between the electromagnetic fields and the analytes is a key factor for strong light-matter interaction leading to high sensitivity for label-free refractive index sensing. Usually, the overlap and therefore the sensitivity are limited by either the localized near field of plasmonic antennas or the decayed resonant mode outside the cavity applied to monitor the refractive index variation. In this paper, by constructing a metal microstructure array-dielectric-metal (MDM) structure, a novel metamaterial absorber integrated microfluidic (MAIM) sensor is proposed and demonstrated in terahertz (THz) range, where the dielectric layer of the MDM structure is hollow and acts as the microfluidic channel. Tuning the electromagnetic parameters of metamaterial absorber, greatly confined electromagnetic fields can be obtained in the channel resulting in significantly enhanced interaction between the analytes and the THz wave. A high sensitivity of 3.5 THz/RIU is predicted. The experimental results of devices working around 1 THz agree with the simulation ones well. The proposed idea to integrate metamaterial and microfluid with a large light-matter interaction can be extended to other frequency regions and has promising applications in matter detection and biosensing. This paper presents a contactless, acoustic technique to manipulate and sort particles of varying size in both liquid and air media. An acoustic standing wave is generated by the superposition of counterpropagating waves emitted by two opposing emitters. The acoustic radiation force traps the smallest particles at the pressure nodes of the acoustic standing wave. The position of the particles can be manipulated by dynamically changing the phase difference between the two emitters. By applying a dynamic acoustic field (DAF), it is demonstrated that particles can be manipulated spatially and sorted according to size. The discrimination (sorting dynamic range) capability is initially demonstrated in liquid media by separating three different sets of polystyrene particles, ranging in size from 5 to 45~\mu \textm in diameter. The separation between particles was performed up to a ratio of 5/6 in diameter (20% diameter difference). Finally, the scalability of the DAF method is demonstrated by sorting expanded polystyrene particles of 2 and 5 mm diameter in air. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We describe the development and optical characterization of a planar medium infrared (mid-IR) InSb photodetector on a GaAs substrate technology, capable of integrating MESFETs, to demonstrate a new active pixel device architecture. Our results pave the way for the development of integrated mid-IR focal plane array circuits on a single chip. Device structures with areas down to 0.0016 mm $^{{ {2}}}$ were investigated. By deploying a silicon nitride passivation layer, we were able to reduce leakage current in reverse bias by up to 27% to yield an improved rectifier. Extensive optical characterization was carried out in the near- and mid-IR wavelength range. Responsivities of up to 3.54 A/W and quantum efficiency values above unity were obtained in the near-IR range as a consequence of illumination above the bandgap causing impact ionization. In the mid-IR range, responsivities of up to 0.97 A/W were observed. The bandwidth of the devices proved compatible with video-rate standard sampling rates. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Questions Ungulate herbivory and formation of large termite mounds occur over different time scales, but both can affect plant community composition in savannas. Human-managed savanna systems are increasingly dominated by domesticated grazing herbivores. These have replaced a mix of indigenous browsers and grazers, leading to changes in plant communities such as increased bush encroachment. We compared the relative impacts of five decades of different types of ungulate herbivory (cattle grazing, browsing and grazing by wild herbivores, and exclusion of all larger herbivores) on woody plant assemblages in two habitats, namely, large termite mounds, which may be thousands of years old, and the surrounding matrix. Methods To determine the influence of termite mounds and herbivory on spatial distribution and composition of woody assemblages, we compared 40 paired mound-matrix plots from the three herbivory treatments using PERMANOVA. We assessed whether mound plots were more similar to each other than matrix plots were to each other, and whether herbivory influenced similarity. We used SIMPER analysis to identify changes in abundance of indicator species for each habitat (i.e. mound or matrix). Results Species composition differed significantly between mound and matrix and also between herbivory treatments. Woody plant assemblages on mounds were more similar to each other than woody plant assemblages in matrix plots were to each other, regardless of type of herbivory, but herbivory reduced the mound/matrix contrast. Sample location (i.e. on mound or in matrix) explained 23% of the variation in woody species composition, compared to 12% explained by herbivory. Woody plant abundance was lowest where there were both grazers and browsers. Conclusions The influence of large termite mounds on plant assemblages was roughly double that of herbivory, which has occurred over five decades. Type of herbivory emerged as relatively influential on woody plant species composition, given that the time periods involved were short by comparison to the slow formation of termite mounds. This article presents the simulation, fabrication, and experimental characterization of a surface plasmonic resonance (SPR) sensor integrated with an acoustic sensing compatible substrate. The SPR sensor is designed to work in the visible region with gold nanodisc arrays fabricated on LiNbO3, which is both piezoelectric and birefringent. A linear relationship between resonance wavelength and varying liquid refractive indices were observed in experiments, and a sensitivity of 165 nm/refractive index unit was obtained. Polarization effects of the birefringent property of the Y-cut LiNbO3 substrate have been investigated, which can also be applied to X-cut LiNbO3. Our study demonstrates the feasibility of an SPR sensor device utilizing a birefringent substrate, which has acoustic wave compatibility and can pave the way toward much more robust and flexible biosensing devices. We have created a novel chip-based diagnostic tools based upon quantification of metabolites using enzymes specific for their chemical conversion. Using this device we show for the first time that a solid-state circuit can be used to measure enzyme kinetics and calculate the Michaelis–Menten constant. Substrate concentration dependency of enzyme reaction rates is central to this aim. Ion-sensitive field effect transistors (ISFET) are excellent transducers for biosensing applications that are reliant upon enzyme assays, especially since they can be fabricated using mainstream microelectronics technology to ensure low unit cost, mass-manufacture, scaling to make many sensors and straightforward miniaturisation for use in point-of-care devices. Here, we describe an integrated ISFET array comprising 2^16 sensors. The device was fabricated with a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process. Unlike traditional CMOS ISFET sensors that use the Si3N4 passivation of the foundry for ion detection, the device reported here was processed with a layer of Ta2O5 that increased the detection sensitivity to 45 mV/pH unit at the sensor readout. The drift was reduced to 0.8 mV/hour with a linear pH response between pH 2–12. A high-speed instrumentation system capable of acquiring nearly 500 fps was developed to stream out the data. The device was then used to measure glucose concentration through the activity of hexokinase in the range of 0.05 mM–231 mM, encompassing glucose’s physiological range in blood. Localised and temporal enzyme kinetics of hexokinase was studied in detail. These results present a roadmap towards a viable personal metabolome machine. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Context: Spatially heterogeneous habitats often promote woody plant species and functional diversity (FD). Ungulate herbivory can have the opposite effect. Across the globe, the type and intensity of herbivory is changing, as domestic livestock replace wild ungulates, which are increasingly confined to protected areas. Despite recognition of the importance of FD for ecosystem functioning, the interactive effect of soil-related fine-scale heterogeneity and larger-scale ungulate herbivory on woody plant FD is little-known. Objectives: In miombo woodland of Zimbabwe, we investigated (1) how bottom-up fine-scale heterogeneity created by Macrotermes termitaria interacts with top-down effects of herbivore foraging-guilds on woody plant FD; and (2) whether browsing combined with grazing impacts FD more than grazing alone. Methods: The three different herbivore treatments (grazing, combined browsing-and-grazing, and exclusion) had been maintained for 50 years. We surveyed 10 termite mound-matrix plots within three sites per treatment. We assessed woody plant traits and FD across treatments (herbivore feeding-guild) and position (mound or woodland-matrix), and interactive effects between these. Results: Woody plant FD was greater on mounds, and lowest overall with browsing-and-grazing. Specific traits were associated with position (e.g. palatability was greater for mounds), and treatment (e.g. spinescence increased with grazing). Conclusions: Long-term enclosure of ungulate herbivores (browsing-and-grazing, and grazing alone) decreased woody FD, but this was mitigated by termitaria. The novel finding is that at regional scales, mounds can enhance woody plant FD despite the impacts of herbivory. Medium wavelength infrared (MWIR) detectors are of increasing importance in defense, security, commercial, and environmental applications. Enhanced integration will lead to greater resolution and lower cost focal plane arrays (FPAs). We present the monolithic fabrication of an active photopixel made in InSb on a GaAs substrate that is suitable for large-scale integration into an FPA. Pixel addressing is provided by the cointegration of a GaAs MESFET with an InSb photodiode (PD). Pixel fabrication was achieved by developing novel materials and process steps, including isolation etches, a gate recess etch, and low temperature processes, to make Ohmic contacts to both the GaAs and InSb devices. Detailed electrical and optical measurements in an FTIR demonstrated that the PD was sensitive to radiation in the range of 3– 5~\mu \textm at room temperature, and that the device could be isolated from its contacts using the integrated MESFET. Myeloma is one of the most common malignancies that results in osteolytic lesions of the spine. Complications, including pathological fractures of the vertebrae and spinal cord compression, may cause severe pain, deformity and neurological sequelae. They may also have significant consequences for quality of life and prognosis for patients. For patients with known or newly diagnosed myeloma presenting with persistent back or radicular pain/weakness, early diagnosis of spinal myeloma disease is therefore essential to treat and prevent further deterioration. Magnetic resonance imaging is the initial imaging modality of choice for the evaluation of spinal disease. Treatment of the underlying malignancy with systemic chemotherapy together with supportive bisphosphonate treatment reduces further vertebral damage. Additional interventions such as cement augmentation, radiotherapy, or surgery are often necessary to prevent, treat and control spinal complications. However, optimal management is dependent on the individual nature of the spinal involvement and requires careful assessment and appropriate intervention throughout. This article reviews the treatment and management options for spinal myeloma disease and highlights the value of defined pathways to enable the proper management of patients affected by it. Infrared plasmonic filters, consisting of subwavelength hole arrays etched into metal films, exhibit characteristics that are typically associated with the formation of surface plasmon polaritons, namely enhanced transmission and wavelength filtering of the incident light. In this article, the properties that dictate the plasmonic response of a material from the optical to the infrared regime are investigated, followed by the design, simulation, fabrication and characterisation of an infrared plasmonic filter set. Infrared plasmonic filters have also been integrated with optical plasmonic filters and a terahertz metamaterial to create a new hybrid multi-spectral material that can filter blue, green, red, near infrared, short wave infrared and two mid infrared wavelengths whilst simultaneously absorbing a single terahertz frequency. The multi-spectral material could be integrated with appropriate image sensors to create a multi-spectral camera capable of operating at optical, infrared and terahertz wavebands simultaneously. Protected areas (PAs) remain central to the conservation of biodiversity. Classical PAs were conceived as areas that would be set aside to maintain a natural state with minimal human influence. However, global environmental change and growing cross-scale anthropogenic influences mean that PAs can no longer be thought of as ecological islands that function independently of the broader social-ecological system in which they are located. For PAs to be resilient (and to contribute to broader social-ecological resilience), they must be able to adapt to changing social and ecological conditions over time in a way that supports the long-term persistence of populations, communities, and ecosystems of conservation concern. We extend Ostrom's social-ecological systems framework to consider the long-term persistence of PAs, as a form of land use embedded in social-ecological systems, with important crossscale feedbacks. Most notably, we highlight the cross-scale influences and feedbacks on PAs that exist from the local to the global scale, contextualizing PAs within multi-scale socialecological functional landscapes. Such functional landscapes are integral to understand and manage individual PAs for long-term sustainability. We illustrate our conceptual contribution with three case studies that highlight cross-scale feedbacks and social-ecological interactions in the functioning of PAs and in relation to regional resilience. Our analysis suggests that while ecological, economic, and social processes are often directly relevant to PAs at finer scales, at broader scales, the dominant processes that shape and alter PA resilience are primarily social and economic. ABSTRACT This letter reports the highest fundamental oscillator operating frequency of 120 GHz for gallium arsenide (GaAs)-based Gunn diode. The letter describes the design, fabrication, and test of the aluminum gallium arsenide (AlGaAs)/(GaAs) planar Gunn diode with an anode to cathode separation of 1 μm and channel width of 120 μm. The planar Gunn diode was designed with an integrated series inductor in coplanar waveguide format. The experimental results showed that the planar Gunn diode oscillated at a fundamental frequency of 120.47 GHz with an RF output power −9.14 dBm.
