Steganography is often used by hackers or illegal organizations as a vehicle for information interception of medical images. Exchanged between PACS or communicated during telemedicine sessions, images are modified to hide data. Such leaks through stego-images may result in the disclosure of doctors’ or patients’ data, or of sensitive hospital data posing thus major risks in terms of privacy and security of the information system. In this paper, to detect these illegal image-based communications, we propose a steganalysis approach, the originality of which relies on a novel neural network GTSCT-Net. This one first extracts texture features as global texture features based on the location specificity of different image parts and then extract possible steganographic information by composing multihead self-attention and deep convolution blocks. It also offers easier convergence and higher accuracy on a lower information embedding rate. Comparative experiments on private and public datasets show that the performance of GTSCT-Net for medical image intrusion detection is separately up to 10.12% and 2.97% better than recently advanced steganography detectors. 4D cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is an important imaging modality in image-guided radiation therapy to address the motion-induced artifacts caused by organ movements during the respiratory process. However, due to the extremely sparse projection data for each temporal phase, 4D CBCT reconstructions will suffer from severe streaking artifacts. Therefore, to tackle the streak artifacts and provide high-quality images, we proposed a framework termed Prior-Regularized Iterative Optimization Reconstruction (PRIOR) for 4D CBCT. The PRIOR framework combines the physics-based model and data-driven method simultaneously, with powerful feature extracting capacity, significantly promoting the image quality compared to single model-based or deep learning-based methods. Besides, we designed a specialized deep learning model named PRIOR-Net, which can effectively excavate the static information in the prior image reconstructed from the fully-sampled projections at the encoding stage to improve the reconstruction performance for individual phase-resolved images. Both the simulated and clinical 4D CBCT datasets were performed to evaluate the performance of the PRIOR-Net and the PRIOR framework. Compared with the advanced 4D CBCT reconstruction methods, the proposed methods achieve promising results quantitatively and qualitatively in streak artifact suppression, soft tissue restoration, and tiny detail preservation. The deep learning-based automatic recognition of the scanning or exposing region in medical imaging automation is a promising new technique, which can decrease the heavy workload of the radiographers, optimize imaging workflow and improve image quality. However, there is little related research and practice in X-ray imaging. In this paper, we focus on two key problems in X-ray imaging automation: automatic recognition of the exposure moment and the exposure region. Consequently, we propose an automatic video analysis framework based on the hybrid model, approaching real-time performance. The framework consists of three interdependent components: Body Structure Detection, Motion State Tracing, and Body Modeling. Body Structure Detection disassembles the patient to obtain the corresponding body keypoints and body Bboxes. Combining and analyzing the two different types of body structure representations is to obtain rich spatial location information about the patient body structure. Motion State Tracing focuses on the motion state analysis of the exposure region to recognize the appropriate exposure moment. The exposure region is calculated by Body Modeling when the exposure moment appears. A large-scale dataset for X-ray examination scene is built to validate the performance of the proposed method. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method in automatically recognizing the exposure moment and exposure region. Accurate and robust cephalometric image analysis plays an essential role in orthodontic diagnosis, treatment assessment and surgical planning. This paper proposes a novel landmark localization method for cephalometric analysis using multiscale image patch-based graph convolutional networks. In detail, image patches with the same size are hierarchically sampled from the Gaussian pyramid to well preserve multiscale context information. We combine local appearance and shape information into spatialized features with an attention module to enrich node representations in graph. The spatial relationships of landmarks are built with the incorporation of three-layer graph convolutional networks, and multiple landmarks are simultaneously updated and moved toward the targets in a cascaded coarse-to-fine process. Quantitative results obtained on publicly available cephalometric X-ray images have exhibited superior performance compared with other state-of-the-art methods in terms of mean radial error and successful detection rate within various precision ranges. Purpose: Clinical rib fracture diagnosis via computed tomography (CT) screening has attracted much attention in recent years. However, automated and accurate segmentation solutions remain a challenging task due to the large sets of 3D CT data to deal with. Down-sampling is often required to face computer constraints, but the performance of the segmentation may decrease in this case. Methods: A new multi-angle projection network (MAPNet) method is proposed for accurately segmenting rib fractures by means of a deep learning approach. The proposed method incorporates multi-angle projection images to complementarily and comprehensively extract the rib characteristics using a rib extraction (RE) module and the fracture features using a fracture segmentation (FS) module. A multi-angle projection fusion (MPF) module is designed for fusing multi-angle spatial features. Results: It is shown that MAPNet can capture more detailed rib fracture features than some commonly used segmentation networks. Our method achieves a better performance in accuracy (88.06 ± 6.97%), sensitivity (89.26 ± 5.69%), specificity (87.58% ± 7.66%) and in terms of classical criteria like dice (85.41 ± 3.35%), intersection over union (IoU, 80.37 ± 4.63%), and Hausdorff distance (HD, 4.34 ± 3.1). Conclusion: We propose a rib fracture segmentation technique to deal with the problem of automatic fracture diagnosis. Accurate segmentation of uterus, uterine fibroids, and spine from MR images is crucial for high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) therapy but remains still difficult to achieve because of 1) the large shape and size variations among individuals, 2) the low contrast between adjacent organs and tissues, and 3) the unknown number of uterine fibroids. To tackle this problem, in this paper, we propose a large kernel Encoder-Decoder Network based on a 2D segmentation model. The use of this large kernel can capture multi-scale contexts by enlarging the valid receptive field. In addition, a deep multiple atrous convolution block is also employed to enlarge the receptive field and extract denser feature maps. The wide applications of X-ray computed tomography (CT) bring low-dose CT (LDCT) into a clinical prerequisite, but reducing the radiation exposure in CT often leads to significantly increased noise and artifacts, which might lower the judgment accuracy of radiologists. In this paper, we put forward a domain progressive 3D residual convolution network (DP-ResNet) for the LDCT imaging procedure that contains three stages: sinogram domain network (SD-net), filtered back projection (FBP), and image domain network (ID-net). Though both are based on the residual network structure, the SD-net and ID-net provide complementary effect on improving the final LDCT quality. The experimental results with both simulated and real projection data show that this domain progressive deep-learning network achieves significantly improved performance by combing the network processing in the two domains. Noise detection accuracy is crucial in suppressing random-valued impulse noise. Both false and miss detections determine the final estimation performance. Deterministic detection methods, which distinctly classify pixels into noisy or uncorrupted pixels, tend to increase the estimation error because some uncorrupted edge points are hard to discriminate from the random-valued impulse noise points. This paper proposes an iterative structure-adaptive fuzzy estimation (SAFE) for random-valued impulse noise suppression. This SAFE method is developed in the framework of Gaussian maximum likelihood estimation. The structure-adaptive fuzziness is reflected by two structure-adaptive metrics based on pixel reliability and patch similarity, respectively. The reliability metric for each pixel (as noise free) is estimated via a novel-minimal-path-based structure propagation to give full consideration of the spatially varying image structures. A robust iteration stopping strategy is also proposed by evaluating the reestimation error of the uncorrupted intensity information. The comparative experimental results show that the proposed structure-adaptive fuzziness can lead to effective restoration. Purpose: The amount of coronary artery calcification (CAC) is a strong and independent predictor of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events. In clinical practice, CAC is manually identified and automatically quantified in cardiac CT using commercially available software. This is a tedious and time-consuming process in large-scale studies. Therefore, a number of automatic methods that require no interaction and semiautomatic methods that require very limited interaction for the identification of CAC in cardiac CT have been proposed. Thus far, a comparison of their performance has been lacking. The objective of this study was to perform an independent evaluation of (semi)automatic methods for CAC scoring in cardiac CT using a publicly available standardized framework. Methods: Cardiac CT exams of 72 patients distributed over four CVD risk categories were provided for (semi)automatic CAC scoring. Each exam consisted of a noncontrast-enhanced calcium scoring CT (CSCT) and a corresponding coronary CT angiography (CCTA) scan. The exams were acquired in four different hospitals using state-of-the-art equipment from four major CT scanner vendors. The data were divided into 32 training exams and 40 test exams. A reference standard for CAC in CSCT was defined by consensus of two experts following a clinical protocol. The framework organizers evaluated the performance of (semi)automatic methods on test CSCT scans, per lesion, artery, and patient. Results: Five (semi)automatic methods were evaluated. Four methods used both CSCT and CCTA to identify CAC, and one method used only CSCT. The evaluated methods correctly detected between 52% and 94% of CAC lesions with positive predictive values between 65% and 96%. Lesions in distal coronary arteries were most commonly missed and aortic calcifications close to the coronary ostia were the most common false positive errors. The majority (between 88% and 98%) of correctly identified CAC lesions were assigned to the correct artery. Linearly weighted Cohen's kappa for patient CVD risk categorization by the evaluated methods ranged from 0.80 to 1.00. Conclusions: A publicly available standardized framework for the evaluation of (semi)automatic methods for CAC identification in cardiac CT is described. An evaluation of five (semi)automatic methods within this framework shows that automatic per patient CVD risk categorization is feasible. Purpose: Calcium scoring is widely used to assess the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). Accurate coronary artery calcification detection in noncontrast CT image is a prerequisite step for coronary calcium scoring. Currently, calcified lesions in the coronary arteries are manually identified by radiologists in clinical practice. Thus, in this paper, a fully automatic calcium scoring method was developed to alleviate the work load of the radiologists or cardiologists. Methods: The challenge of automatic coronary calcification detection is to discriminate the calcification in the coronary arteries from the calcification in the other tissues. Since the anatomy of coronary arteries is difficult to be observed in the noncontrast CT images, the contrast CT image of the same patient is used to extract the regions of the aorta, heart, and coronary arteries. Then, a patient-specific region-of-interest (ROI) is generated in the noncontrast CT image according to the segmentation results in the contrast CT image. This patient-specific ROI focuses on the regions in the neighborhood of coronary arteries for calcification detection, which can eliminate the calcifications in the surrounding tissues. A support vector machine classifier is applied finally to refine the results by removing possible image noise. Furthermore, the calcified lesions in the noncontrast images belonging to the different main coronary arteries are identified automatically using the labeling results of the extracted coronary arteries. Results: Forty datasets from four different CT machine vendors were used to evaluate their algorithm, which were provided by the MICCAI 2014 Coronary Calcium Scoring (orCaScore) Challenge. The sensitivity and positive predictive value for the volume of detected calcifications are 0.989 and 0.948. Only one patient out of 40 patients had been assigned to the wrong risk category defined according to Agatston scores (0, 1-100, 101-300, >300) by comparing with the ground truth. Conclusions: The calcified lesions in the noncontrast CT images can be detected automatically by using the segmentation results of the aorta, heart, and coronary arteries obtained in the contrast CT images with a very high accuracy. Computational load remains a major concern when processing signals by means of sliding transforms. In this paper, we present an efficient algorithm for the fast computation of one-dimensional and two-dimensional sliding discrete Tchebichef moments. To do so, we first establish the relationships that exist between the Tchebichef moments of two neighboring windows taking advantage of Tchebichef polynomials’ properties. We then propose an original way to fast compute the moments of one window by utilizing the moment values of its previous window. We further theoretically establish the complexity of our fast algorithm and illustrate its interest within the framework of digital forensics and more precisely the detection of duplicated regions in an audio signal or an image. Our algorithm is used to extract local features of such a signal tampering. Experimental results show that its complexity is independent of the window size, validating the theory. Median type filters coupled with the Laplacian distribution assumption have shown a high efficiency in suppressing impulse noise. We however demonstrate in this paper that the Gaussian distribution assumption is more preferable than Laplacian distribution assumption in suppressing impulse noise, especially for high noise densities. Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) images are often severely degraded by amplified mottle noise and streak artifacts. These artifacts are often hard to suppress without introducing tissue blurring effects. In this paper, we propose to process LDCT images using a novel image-domain algorithm called “artifact suppressed dictionary learning (ASDL).” In this ASDL method, orientation and scale information on artifacts is exploited to train artifact atoms, which are then combined with tissue feature atoms to build three discriminative dictionaries. The streak artifacts are cancelled via a discriminative sparse representation operation based on these dictionaries. Then, a general dictionary learning processing is applied to further reduce the noise and residual artifacts. Qualitative and quantitative evaluations on a large set of abdominal and mediastinum CT images are carried out and the results show that the proposed method can be efficiently applied in most current CT systems. In CT, ionizing radiation exposure from the scan has attracted much concern from patients and doctors. This work is aimed at improving head CT images from low-dose scans by using a fast Dictionary learning (DL) based post-processing. Both Low-dose CT (LDCT) and Standard-dose CT (SDCT) nonenhanced head images were acquired in head examination from a multi-detector row Siemens Somatom Sensation 16 CT scanner. One hundred patients were involved in the experiments. Two groups of LDCT images were acquired with 50 % (LDCT50 %) and 25 % (LDCT25 %) tube current setting in SDCT. To give quantitative evaluation, Signal to noise ratio (SNR) and Contrast to noise ratio (CNR) were computed from the Hounsfield unit (HU) measurements of GM, WM and CSF tissues. A blinded qualitative analysis was also performed to assess the processed LDCT datasets. Fifty and seventy five percent dose reductions are obtained for the two LDCT groups (LDCT50 %, 1.15 ± 0.1 mSv; LDCT25 %, 0.58 ± 0.1 mSv; SDCT, 2.32 ± 0.1 mSv; P < 0.001). Significant SNR increase over the original LDCT images is observed in the processed LDCT images for all the GM, WM and CSF tissues. Significant GM-WM CNR enhancement is noted in the DL processed LDCT images. Higher SNR and CNR than the reference SDCT images can even be achieved in the processed LDCT50 % and LDCT25 % images. Blinded qualitative review validates the perceptual improvements brought by the proposed approach. An effective approach termed Recursive Gaussian Maximum Likelihood Estimation (RGMLE) is developed in this paper to suppress 2-D impulse noise. And two algorithms termed RGMLE-C and RGMLE-CS are derived by using spatially-adaptive variances, which are respectively estimated based on certainty and joint certainty & similarity information. To give reliable implementation of RGMLE-C and RGMLE-CS algorithms, a novel recursion stopping strategy is proposed by evaluating the estimation error of uncorrupted pixels. Numerical experiments on different noise densities show that the proposed two algorithms can lead to significantly better results than some typical median type filters. In most computer vision applications, the extraction of key image features, what- ever the transformations applied and the image degradations observed, is of major importance. A large diversity of approaches has been reported in the literature. This chapter concentrates on one particular processing frame: the moment-based methods. It provides a survey of methods proposed so far for the derivation of moment invari- ants to geometric transforms and blurring effects. This work addresses random geometrical uncertainties that are intrinsically observed in radiation therapy by means of a new deconvolution method combining a series expansion and a Butterworth filter. The method efficiently suppresses high-frequency components by discarding the higher order terms of the series expansion and then filtering out deviations on the field edges. An additional approximation is made in order to set the fluence values outside the field to zero in the robust profiles. Thismethod is compared to the deconvolution kernel method for a regular 2D fluence map, a real intensity-modulated radiation therapy field, and a prostate case. In abdomen computed tomography (CT), repeated radiation exposures are often inevitable for cancer patients who receive surgery or radiotherapy guided by CT images. Low-dose scans should thus be considered in order to avoid the harm of accumulative x-ray radiation. This work is aimed at improving abdomen tumor CT images from low-dose scans by using a fast dictionary learning (DL) based processing. Stemming from sparse representation theory, the proposed patch-based DL approach allows effective suppression of both mottled noise and streak artifacts. Purpose: In computed tomography, metallic objects in the scanning field create the so-called metal artifacts in the reconstructed images. Interpolation-based methods for metal artifact reduction (MAR) replace the metal-corrupted projection data with surrogate data obtained from interpolation using the surrounding uncorrupted sinogram information. Prior-based MAR methods further improve interpolation-based methods by better estimating the surrogate data using forward projections from a prior image. However, the prior images in most existing prior-based methods are obtained from segmented images and misclassification in segmentation often leads to residual artifacts and tissue structure loss in the final corrected images. To overcome these drawbacks, the authors propose a fusion scheme, named fusion prior-based MAR (FP-MAR). Methods: The FP-MAR method consists of (i) precorrect the image by means of an interpolation-based MAR method and an edge-preserving blur filter; (ii) generate a prior image from the fusion of this precorrected image and the originally reconstructed image with metal parts removed; (iii) forward project this prior image to guide the estimation of the surrogate data using well-developed replacement techniques. Results: Both simulations and clinical image tests are carried out to show that the proposed FP-MAR method can effectively reduce metal artifacts. A comparison with other MAR methods demonstrates that the FP-MAR method performs better in artifact suppression and tissue feature preservation. Conclusions: From a wide range of clinical cases to which FP-MAR has been tested (single or multiple pieces of metal, various shapes, and sizes), it can be concluded that the proposed fusion based prior image preserves more tissue information than other segmentation-based prior approaches and can provide better estimates of the surrogate data in prior-based MAR methods. Prostate segmentation in 3-D transrectal ultrasound images is an important step in the definition of the intra-operative planning of high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) therapy. This paper presents two main approaches for the semi-automatic methods based on discrete dynamic contour and optimal surface detection. They operate in 3-D and require a minimal user interaction. They are considered both alone or sequentially combined, with and without postregularization, and applied on anisotropic and isotropic volumes. Their performance, using different metrics, has been evaluated on a set of 28 3-D images by comparison with two expert delineations. The derivation of moment invariants has been extensively investigated in the past decades. In this paper, we construct a set of invariants derived from Zernike moments which is simultaneously invariant to similarity transformation and to convolution with circularly symmetric point spread function (PSF). Two main contributions are provided: the theoretical framework for deriving the Zernike moments of a blurred image and the way to construct the combined geometric-blur invariants. The performance of the proposed descriptors is evaluated with various PSFs and similarity transformations. The comparison of the proposed method with the existing ones is also provided in terms of pattern recognition accuracy, template matching and robustness to noise. Processing blurred images is a key problem in many image applications. Existing methods to obtain blur invariants which are invariant with respect to centrally symmetric blur are based on geometric moments or complex moments. In this paper, we propose a new method to construct a set of blur invariants using the orthogonal Legendre moments. Some important properties of Legendre moments for the blurred image are presented and proved. The performance of the proposed descriptors is evaluated with various point-spread functions and different image noises. The comparison of the present approach with previous methods in terms of pattern recognition accuracy is also provided. The experimental results show that the proposed descriptors are more robust to noise and have better discriminative power than the methods based on geometric or complex moments. The article discusses the evolution of computer-assisted and image-guided therapy. It explores the breakthrough and impact of therapeutic methods including temperature-based therapies, conventional radiotherapy, and laser-based therapy as well as multimodal therapy which minimizes impact to the surrounding tissues and organs. It also outlines the innovations of the physically enhanced and image-guided drug therapy where drug delivery is activated by heat, ultrasound, and light.

The present work describes a Bayesian maximum a posteriori (MAP) method using a statistical multiscale wavelet prior model. Rather than using the orthogonal discrete wavelet transform (DWT), this prior is built on the translation invariant wavelet transform (TIWT). The statistical modeling of wavelet coefficients relies on the generalized Gaussian distribution. Image reconstruction is performed in spatial domain with a fast block sequential iteration algorithm. We study theoretically the TIWT MAP method by analyzing the Hessian of the prior function to provide some insights on noise and resolution properties of image reconstruction. We adapt the key concept of local shift invariance and explore how the TIWT MAP algorithm behaves with different scales. It is also shown that larger support wavelet filters do not offer better performance in contrast recovery studies. These theoretical developments are confirmed through simulation studies. The results show that the proposed method is more attractive than other MAP methods using either the conventional Gibbs prior or the DWT-based wavelet prior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article describes initiatives to promote collaborative research between academics, clinicians and industrials in key areas of medical technology. Research and development spending in the medical technology industry is generally acknowledged to be between five and ten percent of sales. The European Commission and industry invest heavily in regular user training in medical technology. The five priority areas of medical informatics and telemedicine, medical imaging, biomedical instrumentation, biomaterials and techniques for disabled people have been identified and examined.

The article provides the basic formulations of moments. The authors review recently studied orthogonal moments including Tchebichef, Krawtchouk, Racah, dual Hahn moments, which all posses the property important in image processing, specifically in medical imaging. They discuss the different classification of moments: nonorthogonal moments, geometric moments, rotational moments, orthogonal moments, continuous orthogonal moments and discrete orthogonal moments, then sketch their different expressions, instead of presenting their theoretical details.

Background: The SYMBIOmatics Specific Support Action (SSA) is "an information gathering and dissemination activity" that seeks "to identify synergies between the bioinformatics and the medical informatics" domain to improve collaborative progress between both domains (ref. to http://www.symbiomatics.org). As part of the project experts in both research fields will be identified and approached through a survey. To provide input to the survey, the scientific literature was analysed to extract topics relevant to both medical informatics and bioinformatics. Results: This paper presents results of a systematic analysis of the scientific literature from medical informatics research and bioinformatics research. In the analysis pairs of words (bigrams) from the leading bioinformatics and medical informatics journals have been used as indication of existing and emerging technologies and topics over the period 2000-2005 ("recent") and 1990-1990 ("past"). We identified emerging topics that were equally important to bioinformatics and medical informatics in recent years such as microarray experiments, ontologies, open source, text mining and support vector machines. Emerging topics that evolved only in bioinformatics were system biology, protein interaction networks and statistical methods for microarray analyses, whereas emerging topics in medical informatics were grid technology and tissue microarrays. Conclusion: We conclude that although both fields have their own specific domains of interest, they share common technological developments that tend to be initiated by new developments in biotechnology and computer science. This paper reports on a method for left ventricle three-dimensional (3-D) reconstruction from two orthogonal ventriculograms. The proposed algorithm is voxel-based and takes into account the conical projection geometry associated with the biplane image acquisition equipment. The reconstruction process starts with an initial ellipsoidal approximation derived from the input ventriculograms. This model is subsequently deformed in such a way as to match the input projections. To this end, the object is modeled as a 3-D Markov-Gibbs random field, and an energy function is defined so that it includes one term that models the projections compatibility and another one that includes the space-time regularity constraints. The performance of this reconstruction method is evaluated by considering the reconstruction of mathematically synthesized phantoms and two 3-D binary databases from two orthogonal synthesized projections. The method is also tested using real biplane ventriculograms. In this case, the performance of the reconstruction is expressed in terms of the projection error, which attains values between 9.50% and 11.78% for two biplane sequences including a total of 55 images. The article studies IEEE publications using correspondence analysis. The IEEE subset consists of 354, 356 documents published between 1967 and 2003. The documents include papers in journals, conference papers and conference proceedings. The findings show the evolution over time of the contents of IEEE publications. The results also reveal that the engineering field is more attracted to computer science and less rooted to electronics and electrotechnical engineering.

Multislice computed tomography (MSCT) scanners offer new perspectives for cardiac kinetics evaluation with 4D dynamic sequences of high contrast and spatiotemporal resolutions. A new method is proposed for cardiac motion extraction in multislice CT. Based on a 4D hierarchical surface-volume matching process, it provides the detection of the heart left cavities along the acquired sequence and the estimation of their 3D surface velocity fields. A Markov random field model is defined to find, according to topological descriptors, the best correspondences between a 3D mesh describing the left endocardium at one time and the 3D acquired volume at the following time. The global optimization of the correspondences is realized with a multiresolution process. Results obtained on simulated and real data show the capabilities to extract clinically relevant global and local motion parameters and highlight new perspectives in cardiac computed tomography imaging. The article discusses the macroimaging aspect of medical imaging. A classification is proposed that identifies motion from imaging and vice versa and involves correction of motion as well as evoked motion. A method wherein the objects of interest are made visible due to some internal motion was performed through the use of magnetic resonance angiography. It is noted that imaging of motion which is not corrected or compensated may lead to blurring of image quality. Reconstruction from motion and evoked motion are further discussed.

Clinical interventional hemodynamic studies quantify the ventricular function from two-dimensional (2-D) X-ray projection images without having enough information of the actual three-dimensional (3-D) shape of this cardiac cavity. This paper reports a left ventricle 3-D reconstruction method from two orthogonal angiographic projections. This investigation is motivated by the lack of information about the actual 3-D shape of the cardiac cavity. The proposed algorithm works in 3-D space and considers the oblique projection geometry associated with the biplane image acquisition equipment. The reconstruction process starts by performing an approximate reconstruction based on the Cylindrical Closure Operation and the Dempster--Shafer theory. This approximate reconstruction is appropriately deformed in order to match the given projections. The deformation procedure is carried out by an iterative process that, by means of the Dempster--Shafer and the fuzzy integral theory, combines the information provided by the projection error and the connectivity between voxels. The performance of the proposed reconstruction method is evaluated by considering first the reconstruction of two 3-D binary databases from two orthogonal synthetized projections, obtaining errors as low as 6.48%. The method is then tested on real data, where two orthogonal preprocessed angiographic images are used for reconstruction. The performance of the technique, in this case, is assessed by means of the projection error, whose average for both views is 7.5%. The reconstruction method is also tested by performing the 3-D reconstruction of a ventriculographic sequence throughout an entire cardiac cycle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Computational modeling and imaging in biology and medicine are gaining more and more interest with the discovery of in-depth structural and functional knowledge at all space and time scales (molecule to proteins, cells to organs and organizms). The recursion between description levels for highly dynamical, interacting and complex systems, i.e the integrative approach, is a very challenging topic where formal models, observational tools and experimental investigations have to be closely designed, coupled and confronted together. Imaging techniques play a major role in this interdisciplinary attempt to elucidate this biocomplexity: they convey relevant information about the underlying mechanisms, depict the conformations and anatomical topologies and draw the biophysical laws they may follow. Furthermore, the basic image analysis tools (from calibration to segmentation, motion estimation and registration up to pattern recognition) are generic enough to be of value whatever the objects under consideration. The same comments apply when Computer Graphics or Virtual Reality techniques are concerned. This paper will survey the recent contributions dealing with both models, imaging data and processing frames. Examples ranging over different scales, from macro to nano, will be given in order to enhance the mutual benefits and perspectives that can be expected from this coupling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
