Capacity limitations in visual tasks can be observed when the number of task-related objects increases. An influential idea is that such capacity limitations are determined by competition at the neural level: two objects that are encoded by shared neural populations interfere more in behavior (e.g., visual search) than two objects encoded by separate neural populations. However, the neural representational similarity of objects varies across brain regions and across time, raising the questions of where and when competition determines task performance. Furthermore, it is unclear whether the association between neural representational similarity and task performance is common or unique across tasks. Here, we used neural representational similarity derived from fMRI, MEG, and a deep neural network (DNN) to predict performance on two visual search tasks involving the same objects and requiring the same responses but differing in instructions: cued visual search and oddball visual search. Separate groups of human participants (both sexes) viewed the individual objects in neuroimaging experiments to establish the neural representational similarity between those objects. Results showed that performance on both search tasks could be predicted by neural representational similarity throughout the visual system (fMRI), from 80 ms after onset (MEG), and in all DNN layers. Stepwise regression analysis, however, revealed taskspecific associations, with unique variability in oddball search performance predicted by early/posterior neural similarity and unique variability in cued search task performance predicted by late/anterior neural similarity. This paper investigates the economic and institutional determinants of Taiwan's outward direct investment in six Southeast Asian countries from 1998 to 2017, applying the panel ARDL--Pooled Mean Group estimation. We specially examine the effects of institutional quality with five dimensions inclusively, using the Worldwide Governance Indicators. The results show the locational economic factors are the primary determinants in the long run. The tight and historic trading relation with Southeast Asia has a long-run positive effect. On the contrary, the institutional quality of the host countries has strong positive effects in both the long run and short run. Further, the paper displays the dynamics of this investment in the last 20 years. These results are important for Taiwan and Southeast Asia policy-makers in setting up the short-run and long-run policies to sustain their diversified economic growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study collected 220 commercially available samples of γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) tea produced in Taiwan from 2016 to 2021. The 220 tea samples were categorized into five types of GABA tea, including 108 GABA Oolong tea, 71 GABA Black tea, 21 GABA Paochong tea, 12 GABA Green tea, and 8 GABA Puerh tea samples. The most common type of GABA tea in Taiwan is GABA Oolong tea, followed by GABA Black tea. The physico-chemical constituents and consumer acceptance of the GABA tea samples were analyzed. The GABA content varied among the different types of GABA tea: GABA Oolong tea ranged from 128–286 mg/100 g, GABA Black tea ranged from 182–360 mg/100 g, GABA Paochong tea ranged from 98–203 mg/100 g, GABA Green tea ranged from 56–174 mg/100 g, and GABA Puerh tea ranged from 142–191 mg/100 g. In terms of the commercial standard of GABA tea, 22 out of the 220 GABA tea samples failed to meet the commercial standard, with a failure rate of 10%. During the fermentation process of GABA tea, the contents of GABA increased significantly, but the total polyphenol and total catechin contents remained stable. In terms of consumer acceptance, GABA Black tea is the most accepted by consumers, followed by GABA Puerh tea, GABA Paochong, and GABA Oolong tea. The sour flavor in GABA tea is similar to the original sour sensory properties found in black tea. It is assumed that this is the main reason GABA Black tea has the highest acceptance. This study investigated laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) produced on laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) fabricated SUS316L (LPBF-SUS) and typical cold-rolled SUS 304 (CRSUS) by femtosecond fiber laser with a wavelength of 515 nm. The HSFL (high spatial frequency LIPSS) appeared related to CR-SUS grain boundary characteristics and was partially formed. Air pollution has become a major concern worldwide. Many epidemiological studies have proved relationships between fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and various diseases, but most studies only use short-term and models for specific groups to derive relationships with acute diseases. This makes it difficult to understand long-term exposure, nonlinear relationships, and spatial-temporal health risks regarding chronic diseases. Therefore, this study proposed to analyze and map PM2.5 exceedance probability from long-term spatial-temporal monitoring data using radial basis function estimation. We then constructed and compared multiple linear regression and generalized additive models to investigate linear and nonlinear relationships between long-term average PM2.5 concentration, PM2.5 potential probability for exceeding the standard, and standardized mortality for the top ten causes of death in all towns and villages in Taiwan nationally from 2010 to 2017. Linear models indicate that increasing PM2.5 concentration increased malignant neoplasm, pneumonia, and chronic lower respiratory disease mortalities; chronic liver diseases; and cirrhosis; whereas heart diseases and esophagus cancer mortality decreased. For the nonlinear model results, it can be found that there were also significant nonlinear relationships between PM2.5 concentration and malignant mortalities for neoplasm, heart disease, diabetes; and trachea, bronchus, lung, liver, intrahepatic bile duct, and esophagus cancer. Thus, long-term exposure to PM2.5 may be a significant risk factor for multiple acute and chronic diseases. Results from this study can be directly applied worldwide to provide air quality and health management references for governments, and important information on long-term health risks for local residents in the study area. Objectives Eugenosedin-A (Eu-A), an adrenergic and serotonergic antagonist, is known to have anti-metabolic syndrome effects. In this study, we evaluated its protective effects against diabetes mellitus (DM) in spontaneous hypertensive rats (SHR) and compared it with two anti-diabetes medications, glibenclamide (Gli) and pioglitazone (Pio). Methods We divided 10-week-old SHRs into five groups: a control group fed a normal diet; an untreated DM group induced by injecting the SHRs with STZ/NA and feeding them a high-fat diet (HFD); and three treated groups (after giving STZ/NA and HFD) gavage given with Eu-A, Gli or Pio (5 mg/kg per day) for 4 weeks. Key findings The untreated DM group weighed less and had hyperglycaemia, hypoinsulinemia and hyperlipidemia. They were also found to have aberrant glucose-dependent insulin pathways, glucose metabolism and lipid synthesis proteins, while the controls did not. Eu-A, Gli and Pio ameliorated the above biochemical parameters in the treatment groups. Eu-A and Pio, but not Gli, improved hypertension and tachycardia. Conclusions Taken together, Eu-A ameliorated DM, hypertension and tachycardia by improving glucose, lipid homeostasis and anti-adrenergic, serotonergic activities. Heavy rainfall and strong wind are the two main sources of disasters that are caused by tropical cyclones (TCs), and typhoons with different characteristics may induce different agricultural losses. Traditionally, the classification of typhoon intensity has not considered the amount of rainfall. Here, we propose a novel approach to calculate the typhoon type index (TTI). A positive TTI represents a "wind type" typhoon, where the overall damage in a certain area from TCs is dominated by strong wind. On the other hand, a negative TTI represents a "rain type" typhoon, where the overall damage in a certain area from TCs is dominated by heavy rainfall. From the TTI, the vulnerability of crop losses from different types of typhoons can be compared and explored. For example, Typhoon Kalmaegi (2008) was classified as a rain-type typhoon (TTI = −1.22). The most affected crops were oriental melons and leafy vegetables. On the contrary, Typhoon Soudelor (2015) was classified as a significant wind-type typhoon in most of Taiwan (TTI = 1.83), and the damaged crops were mainly bananas, bamboo shoots, pomelos, and other crops that are easily blown off by strong winds. Through the method that is proposed in this study, we can understand the characteristics of each typhoon that deviate from the general situation and explore the damages that are mainly caused by strong winds or heavy rainfall at different locations. Objective: Autonomic imbalance is considered a psychopathological mechanism underlying major depressive disorder (MDD). Heart rate variability (HRV) is an index for autonomic activation. Poor sleep quality is common among patients with MDD. HRV biofeedback (BF) has been used for regulating autonomic balance among patients with physical illness and mental disorders. The purpose of present study was to examine the effects of HRV-BF on depressive symptoms, sleep quality, pre-sleep arousal, and HRV indices, in patients with MDD and insomnia. Methods: In this case-controlled study, patients with MDD and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score higher than 6 were recruited. The HRV-BF group received weekly 60-minute protocol for 6 weeks, and the control group who have matched the age and sex received medical care only. All participants were assessed on Beck Depression Inventory-II, Back Anxiety Inventory, PSQI, and Pre-Sleep Arousal Scale. Breathing rates and electrocardiography were also performed under resting state at pre-testing, and post-testing conditions and for the HRV-BF group, also at 1-month follow-up. Results: In the HRV-BF group, symptoms of depression and anxiety, sleep quality, and pre-sleep arousal were significantly improved, and increased HRV indices, compared with the control group. Moreover, in the HRV-BF group, significantly improved symptoms of depression and anxiety, decreased breathing rates, and increased HRV indices were detected at post-testing and at 1-month follow-up, compared with pre-testing values. Conclusion: This study confirmed that HRV-BF is a useful psychosocial intervention for improving autonomic balance, baroreflex, and symptoms of depression and insomnia in MDD patients. Most of the civil researches focus on the causes of juvenile using, while this study discussing the significance of juvenile using Ketamine in different situations. By analyzing the application behavior pattern of juveniles, to understand theirs value in using Ketamine. This study will use different situations of collective, individual and exchange, supplemented by Subculture Theory, General Strain Theory, Theory of Criminal Appeal and Situational Analysis Theory to explain the three phenomena. 81 young people from the juvenile correction institution completed the questionnaire survey on their using illicit drugs histories and histories of situation transformation. Major findings are summarized as follows: There is about 79 percent of surveyed students use Ketamine. In the initial contact, there is 94 percent provided by a friend. In the situation of first using takes about 95 percent is collective. It occupies a greater number of subsequent using by participating in exchanging in individual and collective. Only minority of students choose to use individually in their subsequent using. Collective situation using Ketamine more happens "in a friend's home", while more of the individual happens in "home". In addition to the questionnaire survey, this study chose the juveniles from the questionnaire who have the experience of using Ketamine, and divided them into three groups according to the situations of more often using in individual situation, more often using in collective situation and individual situation and collective situation average. Next to choose two juveniles in each group to conduct semistructured interview. From the interview found that: the significance of juvenile individual using Ketamine is "habit and bored", as using Ketamine can bring them great stimulation of pleasure, so that to replace other leisure activities. For party using Ketamine, when juvenile is contacting with the subculture, he will learn the value and behavior, and regard as being gained group identification. This study puts forward four suggestions: firstly, the limitation of justice and medical pattern effect, the problems of juveniles using Ketamine are continued to rise. Secondly, develop the periodic task of juveniles to make it achieve the full development. Thirdly, provide a good support system in helping to solve frustrating problem of doubleloss juveniles. Objective: To verify self-reported basic and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) with a disability and the results of performance-based tests (namely the Taiwan performance-based IADL (TPIADL), the 2-minute step test (2MST), the 30-second chair-stand test (30-s CST), and handgrip dynamometer measurement) to identify disability early and assess the associations with functional fitness in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD). Methods: A cross-sectional study of 99 patients with stage 4-5 CKD and 57 healthy elderly adults were recruited. Self-reported measures were used to collect information on basic (Barthel Index) and IADL (Lawton-Brody scale). Objective measures of the TPIADL and functional fitness (2MST, 30-s CST, handgrip dynamometer) were also assessed. Results: Only IADL, as detected by the TPIADL, were impaired to a greater extent in the CKD patients than those of healthy elderly adults. Among all the patients with CKD, a greater impairment in the TPIADL remained statistically associated with a lower ability in the 2MST. A one step increase in the 2MST score was significantly associated with an improvement of 0.2 s in the total performance time of the TPIADL. Conclusion: Performance-based measures, such as the TPIADL, may detect a functional limitation before it becomes measurable by traditional self-reported basic and IADL scales; functional limitation is mainly associated with cardiac endurance for advanced CKD. Background. Fetuin-A and leukocyte cell-derived chemotaxin-2 (LECT-2) are liver-derived proteins. Fetuin-A is an independent risk factor for type 2 diabetes (T2D) and obese patients with T2D have higher plasma fetuin-A levels than those without T2D. LECT-2 has positive correlation with the severity of both obesity and insulin resistance. The changes in plasma fetuin-A are not consistent after bariatric surgery and no studies have investigated the changes in LECT-2 on the obese patients with T2D after bariatric surgery. Methods. Overall, 18 patients undergoing gastric bypass (GB) and 16 patients undergoing sleeve gastrectomy (SG) were enrolled. The fasting plasma fetuin-A and LECT-2 levels were measured at baseline, one week, three months, and one year after surgery. Results. Both the GB and SG groups significantly decreased the body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio, a body shape index; the triglyceride, fasting blood sugar (FBS), hemoglobin A1c, C-peptide levels; and homeostatic model assessment (HOMA-IR) one year after surgery. The SG group showed a decreasing trend in plasma fetuin-A levels one year after SG surgery. There are no significant changes in LECT-2 one year after either GB or SG. Fetuin-A had a near significant negative relationship with insulin (P = 0.056) and HOMA-IR (P = 0.050) in the SG group. Changes in fetuin-A had a significant positive relationship with changes in BMI (P = 0.031) and waist-to-hip ratio (P = 0.031) in the GB group and had a near significant positive correlation with FBS (P = 0.051) in the SG group. Discussion. Neither GB nor SG modifies plasma levels of plasma fetuin-A or LECT-2 in T2D patients after surgery. Background/Aims: We investigated factors associated with functional performance in hemodialysis (HD) patients as well as their relationships with mortality. Methods: We enrolled 790 HD patients who were followed up from 2009 to 2013. Functional performance was evaluated by Karnofsky Performance Status Scale (KPSS) scores. We examined the associations of clinical variables and all-cause mortality with KPSS scores. Results: Of the participants, 460 had high KPSS scores (range 90–100) and 330 had low KPSS scores (below 80). On multivariate analysis, age and weekly HD sessions were associated with significantly increased odds of a lower KPSS score (age: OR 1.05, 95% CI 1.04–1.07, p < 0.001; weekly HD: OR 2.10, 95% CI 1.37–3.21, p = 0.001). A low KPSS score was a significant predictor of increased all-cause mortality (hazard ratio 1.49; 95% CI 1.02–2.16, p = 0.037), as determined using Cox regression analysis. Background Impairment of physical function and abnormal body composition are the major presentations in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between body composition and physical function in CKD patients. Methods This cross-sectional study enrolled 172 of CKD stages 1±5 from February 2013 to September 2013. Handgrip strength (upper extremity muscle endurance), 30-second chair-stand test (lower extremity muscle endurance) and 2-minute step test (cardiorespiratory endurance) were used as indices of physical function. Body composition, including fluid status (extracellular water/total body water, ECW/TBW), lean tissue index (LTI), and fat tissue index (FTI), was measured using a bioimpedance spectroscopy method. Results All patients with high ECW/TBW had lower handgrip strength and 30-second chair-stand than those with low ECW/TBW (P<0.001 and P = 0.002). CKD patients with high FTI had lower handgrip strength and 30-second chair-stand than those with low FTI (P<0.001 and P = 0.002). These patients with low LTI had lower handgrip strength than those with high LTI (P = 0.04). In multivariate analysis, high ECW/TBW was positively associated with decreased handgrip strength (ß = -41.17, P = 0.03) in CKD patients. High FTI was significantly correlated with decreased times of 30-second chair-stand (ß = -0.13, P = 0.01). There was no significant relationship between body composition and 2-minute step test. Conclusions Our results show a significant association of impaired upper and lower extremity muscle endurance with high fluid status and fat tissue. Spodoptera litura (F.) causes considerable economic damage to multiple agro-crops annually in many countries. In this study, the demography of S. litura reared on cabbage and taro was investigated using the agestage, two-sex life table at 25±1°C, 60±10% relative humidity, and a photoperiod of 12: 12 (L:D) h. Our results showed that the net reproductive rate, intrinsic rate, and finite rate of population increase on cabbage (1893.1 offspring, 0.2374 d–1, and 1.2679 d–1) were all not significantly different from those on taro (1361.0 offspring, 0.2298 d–1, and 1.2584 d–1). The net consumption rate on cabbage (439.1 cm2) was, however, three times higher than that on taro (141.7cm2). According to the population parameters, both cabbage and taro are suitable host plants for S. litura. When both the population growth rate and the consumption rate were taken into consideration, the finite consumption rate on cabbage (ω=3.8054) was significantly higher than that on taro (ω=1.3184). In Taiwan, taro and cabbage are commonly planted in adjacent farm plots, with taro being grown from March to November and cabbage from October to April. Because of the overlapping growth periods of the two crops, S. litura can easily propagate throughout the year by switching between the adjacent crops during the overlap periods. Pest management strategies for controlling S. litura must be thoroughly reevaluated based on ecological characteristics, including its life table and consumption rate on its major host plants. To better understand the predator-prey relationship and to compare predation rates, we studied the life table and predation rate of the predator Eocanthecona furcellata Wolff (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) when reared on two major crucifer pests, Spodoptera litura (F.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae). The net reproductive rate, intrinsic rate of increase, finite rate, and net predation rates of E. furcellata reared on P. xylostella were 292.4 offspring, 0.1389 d-1, 1.1490 d-1, and 644.1 third instars of P. xylostella, respectively. These values are significantly higher than those reared on S. litura, i.e., 272.3 offspring, 0.1220 d-1, 1.1298 d-1, and 863.1 third instars of S. litura. To evaluate the predation potential of E. furcellata fed on P. xylostella and S. litura, we combined both the growth rate and predation rate to calculate the finite predation rate (x); our results showed that E. furcellata is an effective predator of both S. litura (ω=1.6029) and P. xylostella (ω=1.4277). Spodoptera litura (F.), an important polyphagous insect pest, attacks ca. 300 economic crops in dozens of countries. Investigations into its growth and development performance on different host plants can provide an understanding of the potential for increase of S. litura population in the field. We measured the development time, body weight, and head capsule width of S. litura larvae reared on cabbage, taro, peanut, and sesbania, a green manure. Larvae reared on cabbage ingested a significantly higher amount of protein and completed the immature stages in a shorter period than those reared on the other three plants. The relationship between head capsule width and larval instars on these four crops fitted well with Dyar's rule, and the Dyar's ratios ranged from 1.4554 to 1.6786, although a few supernumerary instar individuals on sesbania, peanut, and taro showed lower ratios (1.0103 to 1.1330). The head capsule width among cohorts fed on different host plants varied significantly and overlapped between late instars, which could lead to a misjudgment of instar stage in the field. The growth index of S. litura on cabbage was significantly higher than on the other host plants. Larvae fed on sesbania showed the highest feeding index and a better growth index than on taro and peanut. We therefore suggest that the area-wide pest management against S. litura should take into consideration its occurrence on sesbania in intercropping seasons. Chitosan and Agaricus blazei Murill (ABM) extracts possess antitumor activities. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether chitosan, ABM extract or the two in combination were effective against tumors in tumor-bearing mice. The mice were subcutaneously injected with SK-Hep 1 cells and were then were divided into the following six groups: Group 1, control group; group 2, chitosan 5 mg/kg/day; group 3, chitosan 20 mg/kg/day; group 4, ABM (246 mg/kg/day) and chitosan (5 mg/kg/day) combined; group 5, ABM (984 mg/kg/day) and chitosan (20 mg/kg/day) combined; and group 6, ABM (984 mg/kg/day). The mice were treated with the different concentrations of chitosan, ABM or combinations of the two for 6 weeks. The levels of glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and tissue histopathological features were examined in the surviving animals. Based on the results of the investigation, the treatments performed in groups 2, 3 and 4 were identified as being capable of reducing the weights of the tumors, however, group 4, which was treated with chitosan (5 mg/kg/day) in combination with ABM (246 mg/kg/day) was able to reduce the levels of GOT and VEGF. As a result, treatment with chitosan in combination with ABM may offer potential in cancer therapy and requires further investigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The aim of this study was to compare the changes in primary (heroin use-related) and secondary (depressive symptoms and quality of life, QOL) outcome indicators of 3-month methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) between heroin users with and without HIV infection. Methods: A total of 242 intravenous heroin-dependent individuals (30 with and 212 without HIV infection) receiving MMT were recruited. Primary (severity of heroin dependence, harm caused by heroin use and current heroin use) and secondary (depressive symptoms and QOL) outcome indicators were determined before and after receiving 3-month MMT. Changes in primary and secondary outcome indicators between the two groups were compared using mixed-model analysis. Results: Heroin users both with and without HIV infection showed significant improvement in three primary outcome indicators after 3-month MMT, and there was no difference in the changes of these primary outcome indicators between the two groups. However, improvements in depressive symptoms and the physical domain of QOL among HIV-infected heroin users were poorer than in those without HIV infection. Conclusions: The results of this study indicated that heroin users with HIV infection did improve in the primary but not the secondary outcomes after 3-month MMT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In eukaryotic cells, calcium entry across the cell surface activates nuclear gene expression, a process critically important for cell growth and differentiation, learning, and memory and immune cell functions. In immune cells, calcium entry occurs through store-operated Ca2+ release-activated Ca2+ (CRAC) channels, comprised of STIM1 and Orai1 proteins. Local calcium entry through CRAC channels activates expression of c-fos- and nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT)-dependent genes. Although c-fos and NFAT often interact to activate gene expression synergistically, they can be activated independently of one another to regulate distinct genes. This raises the question of how one transcription factor can be activated and not the other when both are stimulated by the same trigger. Here, we show that the lipid raft scaffolding protein caveolin-1 interacts with the STIM1-Orai1 complex to increase channel activity. Phosphorylation of tyrosine 14 on caveolin-1 regulates CRAC channel-evoked c-fos activation without impacting the NFAT pathway or Orai1 activity. Our results reveal that structurally distinct domains of caveolin-1 selectively regulate the ability of local calcium to activate distinct transcription factors. More generally, our findings reveal that modular regulation by a scaffolding protein provides a simple, yet effective, mechanism to tunnel a local signal down a specific pathway.
