Background: T1-weighted (T1W) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using the delay alternating with nutation for excitation-sampling perfection with application-optimized contrasts using different flip angle evolution (DANTE-SPACE) is the preferred imaging technique for evaluation of the vessel wall. Purpose: To evaluate the intra- and inter-rater reproducibility of carotid wall segmentation on T1W DANTE-SPACE in patients with symptomatic (acute stroke or transient ischemic attack) internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis. Material and Methods: This prospective study included 25 patients with acute (≤3 months) stroke or transient ischemic attack and 50%–99% stenosis of the ICA. All patients underwent 3.0-T high-resolution carotid MRI. Two radiologists independently performed the manual segmentation of the vessel wall and inner lumen of the bilateral carotid artery on DANTE-SPACE. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), Dice similarity coefficient (DSC), and Hausdorff distance (HD) were calculated. Results: The ICCs for intra-rater reproducibility of carotid wall volume, inner lumen volume, and normalized wall index were 0.965, 0.990, and 0.962, respectively. The ICCs for inter-rater reproducibility of carotid wall volume, inner lumen, and normalized wall index were 0.856, 0.981, and 0.904. DSC and HD for intra- and inter-rater reproducibility of carotid wall segmentation were as follows: 0.873 and 0.809 (DSC); and 0.079 and 0.118 (HD), respectively. For evaluation of reproducibility only in the carotid artery with symptomatic stenosis, the ICCs for intra- and inter-rater reproducibility indicated all perfect agreement. This study suggests promising candidates as highly thermally conductive adhesives for advanced semiconductor packaging processes such as flip chip ball grid array (fcBGA), flip chip chip scale package (fcCSP), and package on package (PoP). To achieve an extremely high thermal conductivity (TC) of thermally conductive adhesives of around 10 Wm−1K−1, several technical methods have been tried. However, there are few ways to achieve such a high TC value except by using spherical aluminum nitride (AlN) and 99.99% purified aluminum oxide (Al2O3) fillers. Herein, by adapting highly sophisticated blending and dispersion techniques with spherical AlN fillers, the highest TC of 9.83 Wm−1K−1 was achieved. However, there were big differences between theoretically calculated TCs that were based on the conventional Bruggeman asymmetric model and experimentally measured TCs due to the presence of voids or pores in the composites. To narrow the gaps between these two TC values, this study also suggests a new experimental model that contains the porosity effect on the effective TC of composites in high filler loading ranges over 80 vol%, which modifies the conventional Bruggeman asymmetric model. Fiber-reinforced composites have a wide range of industrial applications owing to their light weight, high modulus, and good specific strength. Trimming using a mechanical punching tool is the fastest way to post process fiber-reinforced composites. However, quantitative analyses of the defects and process parameters are required to analyze the damage mechanisms and achieve high-quality cut surfaces. In this study, we quantitively investigated the defects on the sheared edge of woven glass epoxy laminates subjected to mechanical punching and explored the correlations between these defects and key process parameters, including punch-die clearance, weave alignment angle, and laminate thickness. The results demonstrate the necessity of considering glass fiber burr length and the dimensions of the cracked area simultaneously to evaluate the quality of the sheared surface. This study provides qualitative data on the interfacial damage mechanisms that occur during mechanical punching, which will help to tailor the process parameters of mechanical punching for fiber-reinforced polymers to obtain smooth cut surfaces. Background: Myelin water imaging (MWI) using MRI has been introduced as a method to quantify the integrity of myelin in vivo. However, the investigation of its potential to probe myelin changes has been limited. Purpose: To determine the myelin change using MWI in the corticospinal tract (CST) during the rehabilitation of stroke patients. Study Type: Longitudinal. Population A total of 24 stroke patients within 6 months from the onset (64.3 ± 16.1 years, 14 women, 10 men) and 10 healthy volunteers (27.0 ± 2.2 years, 2 women, 8 men). Field Strength/Sequence: Three‐dimensional multiecho gradient echo sequence and diffusion‐weighted echoplanar imaging sequence at 3 T. Assessment The changes of myelin water fraction (MWF) and fractional anisotropy (FA) during rehabilitation were analyzed in the CST and other regions using tractography software and region of interest drawings by the radiologist. Statistical Tests: A paired t‐test was performed to investigate the change of MRI metrics during rehabilitation. In addition, an independent two‐sample t‐test was performed to investigate the effects of different rehabilitation protocols. A P‐value <0.05 was considered significant. Results: In the CST, MWF significantly changed from 5.83 ± 0.91% to 6.23 ± 0.97% after rehabilitation while changes of FA (0.442 ± 0.038 to 0.443 ± 0.035) were not significant (P = 0.656). The rate of change in MWF and FA, which were 6.69% and 0.439% respectively, were significantly different. Other regions did not show significant changes (range of MWF change: −3.44% to −1.61%, range of FA change: −1.39% to 0.79%, and range of P‐value: 0.144–0.761). Further analysis showed that those with additional robot‐assisted rehabilitation had a significantly larger MWF change than those with conventional rehabilitation only (rate of change: 11.2% vs. 3.2%). Data Conclusion: The feasibility of using MWI to monitor myelin content was demonstrated by showing the MWF changes during rehabilitation. Resistive random-access memories (RRAMs) based on metal-oxide thin films have been studied extensively for application as synaptic devices in neuromorphic systems. The use of graphene oxide (GO) as a switching layer offers an exciting alternative to other materials such as metal-oxides. We present a newly developed RRAM device fabricated by implementing highly-packed GO layers on a highly doped Si wafer to yield a gradual modulation of the memory as a function of the number of input pulses. By using flow-enabled self-assembly, highly uniform GO thin films can be formed on flat Si wafers in a rapid and simple process. The switching mechanism was explored through proposed scenarios reconstructing the density change of the sp2 cluster in the GO layer, resulting in a gradual conductance modulation. We analyzed that the current in a low resistance state could flow by tunneling or hopping via clusters because the distance between the sp2 clusters in closely-packed GO layers is short. Finally, through a pattern-recognition simulation with a Modified National Institute of Standards and Technology database, the feasibility of using close-packed GO layers as synapse devices was successfully demonstrated. Impact ionization and hot-carrier degradation (HCD) in buried-channel-array transistors (BCATs), which are used as the cell transistor, were investigated using sub-30 nm DRAM technology. The impact ionization rate was calculated by measuring the substrate current at different measurement conditions and modeled using an energy-driven model, which is suitable for short-channel transistors. In addition, HCD in BCAT under various operation conditions was analyzed. A multitrap-based approach, in which both interface- and oxide-trap generation were considered, was used to fit the experimental results. Background: Manual segmentations of intracranial hemorrhage on non-contrast CT images are the gold-standard in measuring hematoma growth but are prone to rater variability. Aims: We demonstrate that a convex optimization-based interactive segmentation approach can accurately and reliably measure intracranial hemorrhage growth. Methods: Baseline and 16-h follow-up head non-contrast CT images of 46 subjects presenting with intracranial hemorrhage were selected randomly from the ANNEXA-4 trial imaging database. Three users semi-automatically segmented intracranial hemorrhage to measure hematoma volume for each timepoint using our proposed method. Segmentation accuracy was quantitatively evaluated compared to manual segmentations by using Dice similarity coefficient, Pearson correlation, and Bland–Altman analysis. Intra- and inter-rater reliability of the Dice similarity coefficient and intracranial hemorrhage volumes and volume change were assessed by the intraclass correlation coefficient and minimum detectable change. Results: Among the three users, the mean Dice similarity coefficient, Pearson correlation, and mean difference ranged from 76.79% to 79.76%, 0.970 to 0.980 (p < 0.001), and −1.5 to −0.4 ml, respectively, for all intracranial hemorrhage segmentations. Inter-rater intraclass correlation coefficients between the three users for Dice similarity coefficient and intracranial hemorrhage volume were 0.846 and 0.962, respectively, and the corresponding minimum detectable change was 2.51 ml. Inter-rater intraclass correlation coefficient for intracranial hemorrhage volume change ranged from 0.915 to 0.958 for each user compared to manual measurements, resulting in an minimum detectable change range of 2.14 to 4.26 ml. Conclusions: We spatially and volumetrically validate a novel interactive segmentation method for delineating intracranial hemorrhage on head non-contrast CT images. Good spatial overlap, excellent volume correlation, and good repeatability suggest its usefulness for measuring intracranial hemorrhage volume and volume change on non-contrast CT images. Various memory devices have been proposed for implementing synapse devices in neuromorphic systems. In this letter, an AND flash array based on charge trap flash (CTF) memory was proposed. CTF-based synapse devices are particularly suitable for off-chip learning applications because they have excellent reliability and stable multi-level operation characteristics. In addition, we proposed a method to implement convolutional neural networks in the proposed array, and performed system-level simulation using the characteristics of the fabricated device. Finally, we investigated the accuracy degradation of the neuromorphic system related to data retention and proposed a multiple cell mapping scheme to address this degradation issue. Objectives: To develop a deep learning algorithm for automated detection and localization of intracranial aneurysms on time-of-flight MR angiography and evaluate its diagnostic performance. Methods: In a retrospective and multicenter study, MR images with aneurysms based on radiological reports were extracted. The examinations were randomly divided into two data sets: training set of 468 examinations and internal test set of 120 examinations. Additionally, 50 examinations without aneurysms were randomly selected and added to the internal test set. External test data set consisted of 56 examinations with intracranial aneurysms and 50 examinations without aneurysms, which were extracted based on radiological reports from a different institution. After manual ground truth segmentation of aneurysms, a deep learning algorithm based on 3D ResNet architecture was established with the training set. Its sensitivity, positive predictive value, and specificity were evaluated in the internal and external test sets. Results: MR images included 551 aneurysms (mean diameter, 4.17 ± 2.49 mm) in the training, 147 aneurysms (mean diameter, 3.98 ± 2.11 mm) in the internal test, 63 aneurysms (mean diameter, 3.23 ± 1.69 mm) in the external test sets. The sensitivity, the positive predictive value, and the specificity were 87.1%, 92.8%, and 92.0% for the internal test set and 85.7%, 91.5%, and 98.0% for the external test set, respectively. Conclusion: A deep learning algorithm detected intracranial aneurysms with a high diagnostic performance which was validated using external data set. Introduction: To overcome the blood–brain barrier (BBB) which interferes with the effect of chemotherapeutic agents, we performed multiple disruptions of BBB (BBBD) with magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound on patients with glioblastoma (GBM) during standard adjuvant temozolomide (TMZ) chemotherapy [clinical trial registration no.NCT03712293 (clinicaltrials.gov)]. We report a 1-year follow-up result of BBBD with TMZ for GBM. Methods: From September 2018 to January 2019, six patients were enrolled (four men and two women, median age: 53 years, range: 50–67 years). Of the six patients, five underwent a total of six cycles of BBBD during standard TMZ adjuvant therapy. One patient underwent three cycles of BBBD but continued with TMZ chemotherapy. The 1-year follow-up results of these six patients were reviewed. Results: The mean follow-up duration was 15.17 ± 1.72 months. Two patients showed a recurrence of tumor at 11 and 16 months, respectively. One underwent surgery, and the other patient was restarted with TMZ chemotherapy due to the tumor location with a highly possibility of surgical complications. The survival rate up to 1 year was 100%, and the other four patients are on observation without recurrence. None of the six patients had immediate or delayed BBBD-related complications. Conclusion: Multiple BBBDs can be regarded as a safe procedure without long-term complications, and it seems to have some survival benefits. However, since TMZ partially crosses the BBB, a further extended study with large numbers would be needed to evaluate the benefits of BBBD resulting in an increase of TMZ concentration. Introduction: High resolution vessel wall MRI (VW-MRI) has enabled to characterize intracranial atherosclerosis (ICAS). We studied to identify the factors for enhancement of ICAS in VW-MRI in patients with acute ischemic stroke. Methods: Consecutive patients with acute ischemic stroke or TIA who underwent VW-MRI between January 2017 and December 2017 were included. Enhancement on VW-MRI was defined as an increase in intensity on contrast-enhanced T1-weighted sequence. We compared the clinical and the radiologic findings between patients with wall enhancement and those without wall enhancement. Results: Of the 48 patients with ICAS, 28 patients revealed enhancement on VW-MRI. Patients with enhancement were more likely to have severe stenotic lesions and higher levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density cholesterol, Apo (b), and Apo (b)/Apo (a) lipoprotein ratio (p < 0.05). Multivariable analysis demonstrated that total cholesterol (OR: 5.378, 95% CI, 1.779–16.263), triglycerides (OR: 3.362, 95% CI, 1.008–11.209), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (OR: 4.226, 95% CI, 1.264–14.126), Apo (b) lipoprotein (OR: 3639.641, 95% CI, 17.854–741954.943) levels, and Apo (b)/Apo (a) lipoprotein ratio (OR, 65.514; 95% CI, 1.131–3680.239) were independently associated with enhancement of ICAS. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol and Apo (a) lipoprotein levels were not significantly different between the patients with wall enhancement and those without wall enhancement. Conclusions: The presence and severity of enhancement of ICAS was significantly associated with dyslipidemic conditions. Marine yeasts have tremendous potential in industrial applications but have received less attention than terrestrial yeasts and marine filamentous fungi. In this study, we have screened marine yeasts for amylolytic activity and identified an amylase-producing strain PH-Gra1 isolated from sea algae. PH-Gra1 formed as a coral-red colony on yeast–peptone–dextrose (YPD) agar; the maximum radial growth was observed at 22 °C, pH 6.5 without addition of NaCl to the media. Based on the morphology and phylogenetic analyses derived from sequences of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and a D1/D2 domain of large subunit of ribosomal DNA, PH-Gra1 was designated Sporidiobolus pararoseus. S. pararoseus is frequently isolated from marine environments and known to produce lipids, carotenoids, and several enzymes. However, its amylolytic activity, particularly the optimum conditions for enzyme activity and stability, has not been previously characterized in detail. The extracellular crude enzyme of PH-Gra1 displayed its maximum amylolytic activity at 55 °C, pH 6.5, and 0%–3.0% (w/v) NaCl under the tested conditions, and the activity increased with time over the 180-min incubation period. In addition, the crude enzyme hydrolyzed potato starch more actively than corn and wheat starch, and was stable at temperatures ranging from 15 °C to 45 °C for 2 h. Background: The embryological relationship between cerebellar arteries originating directly from the cavernous segment of the internal carotid artery and persistent trigeminal artery is not well understood. Purpose: To evaluate the incidence and pattern of cerebellar arteries originating from the internal carotid artery and persistent trigeminal artery, and to discuss their probable embryological relationship. Material and Methods: We reviewed 5113 angiographic studies from 5093 patients at our institution over the last eight years, searching for patients with persistent trigeminal artery and cerebellar arteries originating from a cavernous segment of internal carotid artery (persistent trigeminal artery variant). Results: Of the 5093 patients, 27 patients had persistent trigeminal artery or persistent trigeminal artery variant (0.53%). Twenty patients (6 men, 14 women; median age = 54 years) had persistent trigeminal artery (0.39%). Seven patients (2 men, 5 women, age range = 37–72 years; median age = 57 years) had a persistent trigeminal artery variant with persistent trigeminal artery terminating in a cerebellar artery without direct connection to the basilar artery (persistent trigeminal artery variant; 0.14%). The terminal branch of the persistent trigeminal artery variant was an anterior inferior carotid artery in five patients and a superior cerebellar artery in two patients. Of the seven patients having persistent trigeminal artery variant, four patients had another artery from the basilar artery to the anterior inferior carotid artery territory. In 6/20 patients with persistent trigeminal artery, there was an anterior inferior carotid artery arising from the persistent trigeminal artery. One of these patients showed another arterial branch from the basilar artery to the anterior inferior carotid artery territory. Conclusion: Persistent trigeminal artery variant and cerebellar arteries originating from the persistent trigeminal artery are both believed to be a spectrum of incomplete fusion of the longitudinal neural arteries. Film-patterned-retarder (FPR) is an optical film used in the stereoscopic 3D display and is fabricated using an expensive photomask and nano-wire grid polarizer. This method is expensive and the pitch of FPR is fixed for a given photomask. Here, we introduce a maskless fabrication method for FPR using a wedged liquid crystal (LC) cell. The retardation of the wedged LC cell is continuously increased from one edge to the other. When the polarized monochromatic laser beam (450 nm) passes through the cell, periodically undulated polarization pattern of light is obtained, and can be used to produce FPR by combining with the photo-alignment method. The method does not require the expensive photomask and nano-wire grid polarizer, and the pitch of FPR can be simply controllable by changing the birefringence of LC material with temperature or using a light source of different wavelengths. Salterns are hypersaline extreme environments with unique physicochemical properties such as a salinity gradient. Although the investigation of microbiota in salterns has focused on archaea and bacteria, diverse fungi also thrive in the brine and soil of salterns. Fungi isolated from salterns are represented by black yeasts (Hortaea werneckii, Phaeotheca triangularis, Aureobasidium pullulans, and Trimmatostroma salinum), Cladosporium, Aspergillus, and Penicillium species. Most studies on saltern-derived fungi gave attention to black yeasts and their physiological characteristics, including growth under various culture conditions. Since then, biochemical and molecular tools have been employed to explore adaptation of these fungi to salt stress. Genome databases of several fungi in salterns are now publicly available and being used to elucidate salt tolerance mechanisms and discover the target genes for agricultural and industrial applications. Notably, the number of enzymes and novel metabolites known to be produced by diverse saltern-derived fungi has increased significantly. Therefore, fungi in salterns are not only interesting and important subjects to study fungal biodiversity and adaptive mechanisms in extreme environments, but also valuable bioresources with potential for biotechnological applications. Objectives: The extent of peritumoral tumor cell infiltrations in glioblastoma contributes to poor prognosis. We aimed to assess additive prognostic value of Minkowski functionals in analyzing heterogeneity of peritumoral hyperintensity on T2WI in glioblastoma patients. Methods: Clinical data (age, sex, extent of surgical resection), O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) promoter methylation status and pre-operative T2WI of 113 pathologically confirmed glioblastoma patients (from our institution, n = 61; from the Cancer Imaging Archive, n = 52) were retrospectively reviewed. The patients were randomly grouped into a training set (n = 80) and a test set (n = 33). Peritumoral T2 hyperintensity was manually segmented and Minkowski functionals—a texture analysis method capturing heterogeneity of MR images—were computed as a function of 11 grayscale thresholds. The Cox proportional hazards models were fitted with clinical variables, Minkowski functionals features as well as both combined. The risk prediction performances of the Minkowski functionals and combined models were validated on a separate test dataset. The sex-specific survival difference of the entire cohort was analyzed according to MGMT methylation status via Kaplan-Meier survival curves. Results: Thirty-three Minkowski features (11 area, 11 perimeter and 11 genus) for each patient were acquired giving a total of 3729 features. Cox regression models fitted with clinical data, Minkowski features, and both combined had incremental concordance indices of 0.577 (P = 0.02), 0.706 (P = 0.02) and 0.714 (P = 0.01) respectively. The prediction error rate of the combined model—having clinical and Minkowski features—was lower than that of Minkowski functionals model (0.135 and 0.161, respectively) when validated on a test dataset. No sex-specific survival difference was found according to MGMT methylation status (male, P = 0.2; female, P = 0.22). Conclusions: Minkowski functionals features computed from peritumoral hyperintensity can capture heterogeneity of glioblastoma on T2WI and have additive prognostic value in predicting survival, demonstrating their potential in complementing currently available prognostic parameters. Background/Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the utility and efficacy of combined low-dose, time-resolved (TR) and single-phase high-resolution (HR) contrast-enhanced MRA (CE-MRA) as a pre-angiographic study for spinal vascular disease. Materials and methods: Seventeen consecutive patients with suspected spinal vascular disease were retrospectively reviewed. All patients underwent combined low-dose TR CE-MRA and three-dimensional single-phase HR CE-MRA at 3 Tesla, followed by conventional spinal digital subtraction angiography (DSA) within 90 days. Six patients underwent additional spinal MRA and DSA for treatment follow-up. Spinal lesions were analyzed in terms of presence, disease type, laterality, spinal level, and number of arterial feeders. Results: Low-dose TR CE-MRA helped proper localization of subsequent HR CE-MRA in two patients with high or low level of the lesion. For initial detection of spinal vascular disease, sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of CE-MRA were 93.3% (n = 14/15), 100% (n = 3/3), and 94.4% (n = 17/18), respectively. In characterization of dural arteriovenous fistula (AVF), perimedullary AVF, spinal cord arteriovenous malformation (AVM), and extraspinal AVM, CE-MRA correctly characterized in 86.7% (n = 13/15) among the positive findings, and in 88.9% (n = 16/18) among the several patients including negative results. CE-MRA showed matched per-case localization of arterial feeders within 1 vertebral level in 80% (n = 12/15), and matched per-lesion localization in 78.3% (n = 18/23). Conclusion: Combined low-dose TR CE-MRA and single-phase HR CE-MRA at 3 Tesla was an effective and accurate non-invasive tool for the pre-angiographic evaluation of spinal vascular diseases in a single session. This paper proposes a synaptic device based on charge-trap flash memory that has good CMOS compatibility and superior reliability characteristics compared with other synaptic devices. Using hot-electron injection and hot-hole injection, we designed operation methods to implement gradual conductance modulation and spike-timing-dependent plasticity. We demonstrate the feasibility of the device for neuromorphic applications through both a device-level technology computer-aided design simulation and a system-level MATLAB simulation. For the first time, we also propose a 3-D stacked synapse array and present the structure, operation, and process methods. The proposed array architecture features a small area and low process cost and could be a novel solution for neuromorphic systems for implementing deep neural networks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We constructed complementary inverters utilizing solution-processed semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotube (scSWCNT) random networks and electrospun In-Ga-Zn-O (IGZO) nanofibers as p-type and n-type thin-film transistor (TFT) channels, respectively. The IGZO nanofiber n-type TFT and scSWCNT random network p-type TFTs show an on-off current ratio of 2.82 × 105 and 1.38 × 105, a threshold voltage of −7.60 and 9.50 V, a subthreshold swing of 380.13 and 391.01 mV/dec, and field effect mobilities of 1.96 and 5.67 cm2/V s for electrons and holes, respectively. In addition, these hybrid-type inverters consisting of n-channel TFTs and p-channel TFTs exhibit excellent complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) operation. Therefore, we expect that the hybrid CMOS-type inverters based on scSWCNT random networks and IGZO nanofibers can be innovative electronic devices for transparent and flexible digital logic circuits. Our previous studies have shown that Rg2, a triterpenoid saponin contained in ginseng, protects cells against UVB-induced genotoxicity by increasing DNA repair, in possible association with modulation of protein levels involved in p53 pathway. In this study, we determined an upregulation of autophagy by Rg2. Rg2 treatment for 24 h in MCF-7, a breast cancer cell, did not show cytotoxicity up to 200 μM. Rg2 also upregulated the level of p-p53, p-AMPK, p-ACC, Atg-7 and LC3-II and decreased the level of p62 in concentration-dependent manners. We also determined the level of p53, AMPK, p62, Atg-7 and LC3 after UVB exposure and subsequent incubation in growth medium for 24 h. UVB increased the level of p-p53, p-AMPK, p-ACC and decreased the levels of p62, Atg-7 and LC3-II. Interestingly, Rg2 treatment for 24 h after UVB exposure increased the levels of p-p53, p-AMPK, p-ACC, Atg-7 and LC3-II and decreased the level of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer, a UVB-induced DNA damage in concentration-dependent manners. All these results suggest that Rg2 increased autophagy and decreased UVB-induced DNA damage, in possible association with the modulation of protein levels in p53- and autophagic pathways. Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation induces skin damage, skin matrix degradation, and wrinkle formation through photochemical reaction and oxidative stress. Therefore, protecting the skin from UVB can prevent skin aging. In this study, we investigated the effects of a mixture (RA) of Rg2, a ginsenoside, and astaxanthin, an antioxidant, on the responses of HaCaT cells exposed to UVB (700 J/m2). The cells were incubated for 24 h after UVB exposure and cell viability was determined by MTT assay. UVB decreased cell viability by 60% compared to that of untreated control cells, whereas RA increased cell viability in a concentration-dependent manner, and this increase was significantly higher than that in the single treatment groups. Further, UVB increased the levels of DNA lesions such as cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer (CPD) and 8-hydroxyguanine (8-OHdG). Conversely, RA decreased both CPD and 8-OHdG levels in a concentration-dependent manner. UVB exposure also increased phosphorylation of ataxia-telangiectasia mutated (ATM) protein kinase and p53 and subsequently increased the levels of GADD45α, p21, and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs)-3, -9, and -13. Additionally, UVB exposure decreased the level of COL1A1. However, RA treatment decreased the levels of p-ATM, p-p53, GADD45α, p21, MMP-3, -9, and -13 and increased the level of COL1A1 in a concentration-dependent manner. Purpose: To explore the feasibility of using correlation-based time-delay (CTD) maps produced from time-resolved MR angiography (TRMRA) to diagnose perfusion abnormalities in patients suspected to have steno-occlusive lesions in the craniocervical arteries.Materials and Methods: Twenty-seven patients who were suspected to have steno-occlusive lesions in the craniocervical arteries underwent both TRMRA and brain single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). TRMRA was performed on the supra-aortic area after intravenous injection of a 0.03 mmol/kg gadolinium-based contrast agent. Time-to-peak (TTP) maps and CTD maps of the brain were automatically generated from TRMRA data, and their quality was assessed. Detection of perfusion abnormalities was compared between CTD maps and the time-series maximal intensity projection (MIP) images from TRMRA and TTP maps. Correlation coefficients between quantitative changes in SPECT and parametric maps for the abnormal perfusion areas were calculated.Results: The CTD maps were of significantly superior quality than TTP maps (p < 0.01). For perfusion abnormality detection, CTD maps (kappa 0.84, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.67-1.00) showed better agreement with SPECT than TTP maps (0.66, 0.46-0.85). For perfusion deficit detection, CTD maps showed higher accuracy (85.2%, 95% CI 66.3-95.8) than MIP images (66.7%, 46-83.5), with marginal significance (p = 0.07). Background: The liver is a central organ for the metabolism of iron and manganese and the places where those metals are commonly deposited overlap in the brain.Purpose/hypothesis: To elucidate the relationship between pallidal T1 hyperintensity and iron deposition in the deep gray matter of liver cirrhosis patients using quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM).Study Type: Retrospective case-control study SUBJECTS: In all, 38 consecutive liver cirrhosis patients who received brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as pretransplant evaluation.Field Strength/sequence: QSM was reconstructed from 3D multi- or single-echo phase images at 3T. T1 -weighted images were used for the assessment of pallidal hyperintensity and pallidal index (PI).Assessment: Patients were divided into two groups according to the presence of pallidal hyperintensity by consensus of two radiologists. Susceptibility values were acquired for five deep gray matter structures.Statistical Test: QSM measures were compared between two groups using the t-test. We also calculated Pearson correlations between QSM measures and PI.Results: In all, 26 patients showed pallidal hyperintensity (T1 h group) and 12 did not (T1 n group). The susceptibility of the globus pallidus (GP) in the T1 h group (120.6 ± 38.1 ppb) was significantly lower than that in the T1 n group (150.0 ± 35.2, P = 0.030). The susceptibility of the dentate nucleus (DN) in the T1 h group (88.1 ± 31.0) was significantly lower than that in the T1 n group (125.6 ± 30.6, P = 0.001). Negative correlation between the susceptibility of GP (r = -0.37, P = 0.022) and the PI, and between DN (r = -0.43, P < 0.001) and the PI was found.Data Conclusion: Liver cirrhosis patients with pallidal T1 hyperintensity had lower susceptibility values in the GP and DN than those without it. Objective: To determine the prevalence of a linear sign within enlarged perivascular space (EPVS) and chronic lacunar infarction (CLI) ≥ 5 mm on T2-weighted imaging (T2WI) and time-of-flight (TOF) magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), and to evaluate the diagnostic value of the linear signs for EPVS over CLI.Methods: This study included 101 patients with cystic lesions ≥ 5 mm on brain MRI including TOF MRA. After classification of cystic lesions into EPVS or CLI, two readers assessed linear signs on T2WI and TOF MRA. We compared the prevalence and the diagnostic performance of linear signs.Results: Among 46 EPVS and 51 CLI, 84 lesions (86.6%) were in basal ganglia. The prevalence of T2 and TOF linear signs was significantly higher in the EPVS than in the CLI (P < .001). For the diagnosis of EPVS, T2 and TOF linear signs showed high sensitivity (> 80%). TOF linear sign showed significantly higher specificity (100%) and accuracy (92.8% and 90.7%) than T2 linear sign (P < .001).Conclusions: T2 and TOF linear signs were more frequently observed in EPVS than CLI. They showed high sensitivity in differentiation of them, especially for basal ganglia. Susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) is a method that uses the intrinsic nature of local magnetic fields to enhance image contrast in order to improve the visibility of various susceptibility sources and to facilitate diagnostic interpretation. It is also the precursor to the concept of the use of phase for quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM). Nowadays, SWI has become a widely used clinical tool to image deoxyhemoglobin in veins, iron deposition in the brain, hemorrhages, microbleeds and calcification. In this article, we review the basics of SWI, including data acquisition, data reconstruction and post-processing. In particular, the source of cusp artifacts in phase images is investigated in detail and an improved multi-channel phase data combination algorithm is provided. In addition, we show a few clinical applications of SWI for the imaging of stroke, traumatic brain injury, carotid vessel wall, siderotic nodules in cirrhotic liver, prostate cancer, prostatic calcification, spinal cord injury and intervertebral disc degeneration. As the clinical applications of SWI continue to expand both in and outside the brain, the improvement of SWI in conjunction with QSM is an important future direction of this technology. Background: Pulse wave velocity is a marker of arterial stiffness and a surrogate marker of vascular damage. Autonomic abnormalities associated with blood pressure are relatively commonly observed in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare arterial stiffness between patients with PD and controls and investigate the associations between cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction and pulse wave velocity in PD. Methods: One hundred twenty-five PD patients without diabetes mellitus were enrolled into this study, along with 22 agematched controls. Orthostatic vital signs and ambulatory 24-hour blood pressure monitoring values were recorded. Pulse wave velocity was used to evaluate arterial stiffness. Results: In PD, greater arterial stiffness was associated with orthostatic hypotension, supine hypertension, nocturnal hypertension, and nondipping. Dopaminergic treatment did not influence cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction or arterial stiffness. Although pulse wave velocity was mildly increased in patients with PD compared to controls, the arterial stiffness in PD patients without autonomic failure was similar to that in normal controls. Stiffer arteries were found only in patients with PD and autonomic failure. Conclusion: These findings suggest that cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction is associated with arterial stiffness in PD. PD itself does not affect arterial stiffness, whereas autonomic blood pressure disturbances influence alterations in arterial stiffness and architectural changes in the arteries of PD patients. Ultrasmallsuperparamagnetic iron oxide (USPIO) has been suggested to be a negative MR contrast agent to detect metastatic lymph nodes. Previously reported studies have evaluated the diagnostic performance of USPIO-enhanced MR lymph node imaging based on signal intensity. In this study, we investigate the specific performance of three different parametric approaches (normalized signal intensity, R2* and susceptibility) using 3D multi-echo gradient echo to quantify the USPIO particles in lymph nodes. Nine rabbits with VX2 tumor implants were scanned before and after USPIO injection. From 3D multi-echo GRE magnitude and phase data, we generated multi-echo combined T2*-weighted images, an R2* map, and a quantitative susceptibility map. Eighteen lymph nodes (nine reactive and nine metastatic) were evaluated and showed remarkable signal drops in the area of USPIO accumulation. On parametric analysis, the R2* difference before and after USPIO injection was significantly different ( p < 0.05) between reactive and metastatic lymph nodes; in contrast, the normalized signal intensity and susceptibility were not significantly different between the nodes. Our study showed the potential utility of USPIO-enhanced MRI using R2* mapping from 3D multi-echo GRE for the detection of lymph node metastasis and parametric analysis of lymph node status in a rabbit model. Introduction: To compare the diagnostic accuracy of contrast-enhanced 3D(dimensional) T1-weighted sampling perfection with application-optimized contrasts by using different flip angle evolutions (T1-SPACE), 2D fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) images and 2D contrast-enhanced T1-weighted image in detection of leptomeningeal metastasis except for invasive procedures such as a CSF tapping. Materials and Methods: Three groups of patients were included retrospectively for 9 months (from 2013-04-01 to 2013-12-31). Group 1 patients with positive malignant cells in CSF cytology (n = 22); group 2, stroke patients with steno-occlusion in ICA or MCA (n = 16); and group 3, patients with negative results on MRI, whose symptom were dizziness or headache (n = 25). A total of 63 sets of MR images are separately collected and randomly arranged: (1) CE 3D T1-SPACE; (2) 2D FLAIR; and (3) CE T1-GRE using a 3-Tesla MR system. A faculty neuroradiologist with 8-year-experience and another 2nd grade trainee in radiology reviewed each MR image- blinded by the results of CSF cytology and coded their observations as positives or negatives of leptomeningeal metastasis. The CSF cytology result was considered as a gold standard. Sensitivity and specificity of each MR images were calculated. Diagnostic accuracy was compared using a McNemar’s test. A Cohen's kappa analysis was performed to assess inter-observer agreements. Results: Diagnostic accuracy was not different between 3D T1-SPACE and CSF cytology by both raters. However, the accuracy test of 2D FLAIR and 2D contrast-enhanced T1-weighted GRE was inconsistent by the two raters. The Kappa statistic results were 0.657 (3D T1-SPACE), 0.420 (2D FLAIR), and 0.160 (2D contrast-enhanced T1-weighted GRE). The 3D T1-SPACE images showed the highest inter-observer agreements between the raters. Conclusions: Compared to 2D FLAIR and 2D contrast-enhanced T1-weighted GRE, contrast-enhanced 3D T1 SPACE showed a better detection rate of leptomeningeal metastasis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT We evaluated the value of diffusion-weighted readout-segmented EPI (DW rs-EPI) and diffusion-weighted fast spin echo images with BLADE (PROPELLER) k-space sampling (DW BLADE) in patients with ischemic stroke through intra-individual comparisons with diffusion-weighted single-shot EPI (DW ss-EPI). Forty-four patients with acute ischemic stroke who had undergone three different types of diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) ( b = 1000 s/mm2) were included. Two reviewers assessed the three types of DWI for diagnostic confidence based on a five-point confidence score (CS). The inter- and intra-observer agreements for the CS were assessed. The DWI signal ratio to the contralateral normal area and the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) of DWI lesions were compared. The CSs of the three DWI methods were significantly different ( P < 0.001). A post hoc analysis showed a significantly higher CS with DW rs-EPI than with DW ss-EPI ( P = 0.022). There were significant increases in the CSs for DW rs-EPI compared to DW ss-EPI, for patients who underwent DWI within 24 h of symptom onset, and for patients with DWI lesions ≤ 50 mm2. The inter-observer and intra-observer agreements of the CS were good. DW rs-EPI increased the diagnostic confidence of ischemic stroke compared to DW ss-EPI, particularly for patients with small lesions and for those who underwent DWI within 24 h of symptom onset. Background: Iron deposition of basal ganglia in Parkinson's disease (PD) can be measured using susceptibility weighted images (SWI) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Fluoropropyl carbomethoxy-3b-4-iodophenyltropane (F18 FP-CIT) positron emission tomography (PET) has been used to differentiate Parkinsonism. Purpose: To compare SWI phase values in Parkinsonian syndrome and age-matched control and to correlate them with F18 FP-CIT PET. Material and Methods: Retrospectively, patients with Parkinsonian movement disorder (n = 62) and age-matched control (n = 16) were enrolled. Mean phase values on SWI were measured by region of interest (ROI) in putamens and caudate heads. Mean standardized uptake value (SUV) on F18 FP-CIT were measured in the same ROIs of PD (n = 40) and other forms of Parkinsonism (n = 22). A statistical analysis was performed to compare the phase values and SUVs and to correlate them between groups. Results: The putaminal mean phase values were higher in Parkinsonism than in the control (P ≤ 0.001). There was no difference of phase value in caudate head among the groups. Also, the mean phase value of putamen between PD and other forms of Parkinsonism was not different. Mean SUV of F18 FP-CIT in the putamen was lower in PD than other forms of Parkinsonism (P ≤ 0.014). However, there was no significant correlation between phase values and mean SUV (P > 0.05). Conclusion: The putaminal phase value was higher than in Parkinsonian syndrome than in the age-matched controls. Objective This study was aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of two low-volume agents, polyethylene glycol (PEG)-3350 plus ascorbic acid (PEG + Asc) and sodium picosulfate with magnesium citrate (SPMC), for bowel preparation. Methods We performed a prospective, endoscopist-blinded, single-center, randomized controlled trial comparing PEG + Asc with SPMC to evaluate the bowel cleansing efficacy of the two regimens using the modified Ottawa bowel preparation scale (OBPS) and the Aronchick scale. Patients' taste and overall tolerance were assessed with a questionnaire. Results In total, 200 patients were randomized to receive either PEG + Asc ( n = 98) or SPMC ( n = 102). Both treatments were similarly efficacious in bowel cleansing, based on the modified OBSP (PEG + Asc 4.01 ± 2.29 vs SPMC 3.86 ± 2.47, P = 0.62) and Aronchick scale (PEG + Asc 1.96 ± 0.70 vs SPMC 1.89 ± 0.70, P = 0.42). Patient-reported taste and tolerance of each regimen, as reported by the questionnaire, were significantly greater in the PEG + Asc group than in the SPMC group ( P = 0.01). In terms of adverse events, dizziness was more frequently observed in the PEG + Asc group ( P = 0.03), whereas nausea was more common in the SPMC group ( P = 0.02). The etiology of superior canal dehiscence (SCD) is controversial. An embryological perspective suggests that SCD may occur through the failure of postnatal bone formation over the superior semicircular canal (SC), whereas an acquired theory suggests that trauma or pressure from the overlying temporal lobe could break or gradually thin the SC. We infer the etiology of SCD by comparing the thickness of the bony otic capsule of the unaffected side of SCD patients with that of non-SCD participants. Twelve SCD patients (13 SCD ears and 11 normal ears) and 34 age-matched controls (68 ears) were included. The control group was subdivided into an aerated group (49 ears) and a nonaerated group (19 ears), as defined by the presence of air cells above the SC. A high-resolution temporal bone CT was performed in all participants. The thicknesses of the SC, horizontal canal (HC) and posterior canal (PC) of the unaffected ears of SCD patients were compared with those of the controls. The SC of the unaffected side in the SCD group (n = 11, 0.41 ± 0.23 mm) was significantly thinner than the one in the control group (n = 68, 0.64 ± 0.21 mm, p = 0.002). The HC and PC were also thinner in the SCD group (n = 24, 0.58 ± 0.11 and 1.39 ± 0.31 mm, respectively) than in the controls (0.70 ± 0.08 and 1.61 ± 0.32 mm; p < 0.0001 and p = 0.005, respectively). The SC, HC and PC thicknesses were also compared between the aerated and nonaerated ears within the control group. The SC was significantly thicker in the aerated group (0.73 ± 0.14 mm) than in the nonaerated group (0.60 ± 0.23 mm; p = 0.046); however, no significant difference was observed for the HC and PC thickness (aerated group, n = 49, 0.72 ± 0.07 and 1.67 ± 0.34 mm; nonaerated group, n = 19, 0.70 ± 0.09 and 1.59 ± 0.34 mm; p = 0.350 and p = 0.428, respectively). The bony otic capsule was significantly thinner in the SCD patients than in the controls. However, even within unaffected individuals, SCs lacking overlying air cells were also thinner than those with overlying air cells. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE This study was designed to evaluate various magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) criteria for cavernous sinus (CS) invasion in preoperative evaluation of pituitary macroadenoma. METHODS The sellar MRIs of 63 patients (47 female, 16 male; age 17-67 years, mean of 42 years) who underwent surgery for pituitary macroadenoma were retrospectively reviewed. The following MR signs were assessed and compared with intraoperative findings, and statistical analyses were performed: (1) presence of hypointense-line suggestive of medial wall of CS on high-resolution coronal T2-weighted image, (2) presence of entire rim-enhancement around the intracavernous internal carotid artery (ICA) ('periarterial enhancement'), (3) location of the tumor in relation to the lateral intercarotid lines, and (4) angle of tumor encasement around the intracavernous ICA. RESULTS CS invasion was highly probable if periarterial enhancement was not depicted (positive predictive value, 86%; P < .001). Valuable criteria of CS invasion by logistic regression analysis were the absence of periarterial enhancement ( P = .043, odds ratio = 5.23) and the angle of intracavernous ICA encased by the tumor ( P = .029, odds ratio = 1.017) with a threshold value of 136.5° with a sensitivity of 90% and specificity of 78.3%. Background: The radiologic diagnosis of vertebral artery dissection (VAD) depends on characteristic intraluminal findings on angiography and intramural hematoma or a double-lumen sign on high-resolution vessel wall imaging. We aimed to evaluate the accuracy of intramural hematoma sign on susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) in VAD. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed SWI, phase map images and brain computed tomography (CT) of the consecutive patients who suffered an ischemic stroke in the vertebral artery territory from August 2010 to July 2012. We divided the patients into 2 groups: the VAD group and the nondissection group. VAD was diagnosed by conventional catheter angiographic findings (aneurysmal dilatation, pearl-and-string or tapered steno-occlusion) and pathognomonic findings such as intramural hematoma or a double-lumen sign on the source images of TOF-MRA, high-resolution T1-weighted MRI or high-resolution T2-weighted MRI. Intramural hematoma sign was considered positive if the patient had an eccentric or concentric hypointense signal lesion in the vertebral artery on SWI, a corresponding hyperintense signal on phase map and no evidence of calcification on the brain CT, suggesting blood products other than calcification. Two experienced neuroradiologists blinded to clinical information and angiographic findings were asked to judge for the presence of intramural hematoma sign on SWI. The accuracy of intramural hematoma sign on SWI was evaluated. Phase value, demographic and clinical data were compared between the VAD and the nondissection groups. Results: Thirty-nine patients were included: 10 in the VAD group and 29 in the non-dissection group. Among the VAD group cases, intramural hematoma sign on SWI was positive in 9 of the 10 VAD cases and in 1 out of the 29 cases in the nondissection group. The intramural hematoma sign on SWI was significantly associated with VAD (p < 0.001), and showed sensitivity of 90% and specificity of 96.6%. Mean phase values of intramural hematomas (n = 9) were all positive and those of calcified lesions (n = 13) were all negative (0.45 radian vs. -0.42 radian, p < 0.001). Silicon carbide was incorporated in poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) in combination with multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to improve the thermal conduction behavior. The amount of silicon carbide was increased from 0 to 150 phr and the amount of MWCNTs was increased from 0 to 8 phr at a fixed amount of silicon carbide (150 phr). The thermal conductivity of the PDMS composite was increased with increasing amount of the MWCNTs and fine dispersibility of the incorporated MWCNTs was achieved without pretreatment. The rheological properties of the PDMS composites incorporating silicon carbide and MWCNTs were investigated and the activation energy of the composites was calculated during thermal decomposition using the Horowitz-Metzger method. Importantly, unexpected thermal decomposition behavior as indicated by the reduction in activation energy from 361.63 to 194.18 kJ mol−1, namely acceleration of decomposition of the PDMS matrix caused by MWCNTs, was observed for the first time. Gravity-induced loss of consciousness (G-LOC) is caused by loss of cerebral blood flow during high +Gz (head-to-foot inertial forces). The resistance of the jugular vein is a significant factor in decrease in cerebral blood flow. Ultrasonography of thoracic inlet veins, including internal jugular vein, is feasible to visualize the internal jugular vein and hemodynamic information. Anti-gravity straining maneuver (AGSM) was widely recognized as one of the important factors in preventing G-LOC. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the ultrasonographic shape and size of internal jugular vein during AGSM and G-LOC. 47 trainee pilots who participated in human centrifuge education program were enrolled. They were all men, and their mean age was 23.9 +/- 1.38 years. Questionnaire sheets were used to collect information about well-being sensation, smoking, drinking, height, and weight. Using ultrasonography, we monitored shape and size of internal jugular vein during AGSM. After ultrasonographic examination, 47 subjects underwent human centrifuge on the same day. The protocol of human centrifuge training was maximal 6G with sustaining time of 30 s. G-LOC occurred to ten out of 47 subjects in human centrifuge. To find presumptive variable associated with G-LOC, we performed logistic regression analysis. Changes in both land use and rainfall patterns can lead to changes in the hydrologic behavior of the watershed. The long-term hydrologic impact analysis (L-THIA) model has been used to predict such changes and analyze the changes in mitigation scenarios. The model is simple as only a small amount of input data are required, but it can predict only the direct runoff and cannot determine the streamflow. This study, therefore, aimed to propose a method for predicting the monthly baseflow while maintaining the simplicity of the model. The monthly baseflows for 20 watersheds in South Korea were estimated under different land use conditions. Calibration of the monthly baseflow prediction method produced values for R2 and the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) within the ranges of 0.600–0.817 and 0.504–0.677, respectively; during validation, these values were in the ranges of 0.618–0.786 and 0.567–0.727, respectively. This indicates that the proposed method can reliably predict the monthly baseflow while maintaining the simplicity of the L-THIA model.
