The present study reports the characteristics of the 5S rRNA spacer sequences of Dirofilaria repens microfilariae isolated from dogs. The 22 nucleotide long spliced leader 1 sequences located in the 5S rRNA spacer region are completely conserved in all nematodes. There is variation in the spliced leader 1 sequences and associated sites in the 5S rRNA spacer region of D. repens. Filarial parasites like Brugia pahangi and Brugia malayi can infect dogs. Adults of Brugia genus resides in the lymphatic system and microfilariae, in blood. There are increasing reports of detection of B. malayi microfilariae in dogs. A study was undertaken to compare the efficacy of repeated oral dosing of ivermectin (IVT) and diethylcarbamazine (DEC), individually and in combination against naturally infected B. malayi microfilariae in dogs. The species of the microfilariae was confirmed by acid phosphatase staining and polymerase chain reaction. The three treatment groups were 200 mcg/kg body weight IVT daily for 14 days (I), 6.6 mg/kg body weight DEC daily for 14 days (II) and IVT and DEC together in the same dose for a period of 5 days (III). Microfilarial status of the peripheral blood was assessed on the 0th, 7th, 14th and 21st day. Haematological parameters were measured on day zero and on the 21st day. Though, all the three treatment groups showed a reduction in the microfilarial concentration through the study period, complete absence of detectable microfilaremia was not noticed in any of the three groups by 21st day. Among the haematological parameters, statistically significant difference was observed in the post-treatment means of haemoglobin levels of group III when compared with group II. Brugian filariasis is reported in dogs in Kerala, India. Antibody detection kits are not available worldwide, for detection of Brugian filariasis in dogs. A study was carried out to develop Indirect plate ELISA using excretory secretory antigen isolated from canine brugian microfilariae and compare the sensitivity and specificity with that of blood smear examination. Identification of microfilariae was done by acid phosphatase staining using Naphthol AS-TR method and Polymerase Chain Reaction for Hha 1 repeat sequence. The microfilariae were identified as Brugia malayi. Isolation of brugian microfilariae from canine blood was done by gradient centrifugation method. The isolated microfilariae were maintained in RPMI-1640 media. The pooled media was then concentrated to obtain excretory secretory protein (ESP). This ESP was used to develop Indirect ELISA. The sensitivity and specificity of the plate ELISA developed was 84 and 100 per cent respectively when compared with blood smear examination. This is the first report of successful isolation of ESP from Brugia malayi microfilariae from dogs and standardization of plate ELISA using the antigen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A male Labrador dog of 8 months old presented with history of alopecia for past seven days. Moist erythematous lesions on pinna of ear, ventral and lateral parts of abdomen were observed. Impression smear revealed budding yeast cells of Malassezia spp. organisms were confirmed as Malassezia pachydermatis by culture and isolation and urease test. Balantidium coli is a zoonotic protozoan parasite that causes diarrhoea in pigs. A two month old piglet was presented to the Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex with the history of weakness and chronic diarrhoea since one month of age but with the normal feed and water intake. On examination, piglet was weak, temperature - 101.20F, pale conjunctival membrane and yellowish watery foul smelling diarrhoea. Fecal sample examination revealed numerous moving B. coli trophozoites and cysts. The current case report deals with the diagnosis and management of balantidial diarrhoea in a piglet which was successfully treated with potentiated sulphanamides and metronidazole. A pup was presented with intermittent seizures. Ear swab collected demonstrated Otodectes cynotis mite. The pup was treated with ear cleaning and Ivermectin as otic drops, Cephalexin and tapered dosing of glucocorticoids for six days. After twenty one days of treatment, the pup recovered uneventfully. Diejfenbachia amoena, commonly known as 'Dumbcane' is a popular monocot of Araceae family, which is cultivated as a houseplant for its ornamental leaves. Dieffenbachia spp. contains calcium oxalate crystals and unknown toxic proteins (possibly asparaginase and protoanemonin) in all parts including sap. Accidental ingestion of this plant will lead to immediate intense pain, burning sensation, inflammation of mouth and throat, anorexia, vomiting and possibly diarrhea. A study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of Clindamycin once daily orally in the management of canine deep pyoderma caused by Staphylococcus in-vitro and in-vivo. Twelve dogs presented with symptoms of deep pyoderma and positive cultures of Staphylococcus sp. were selected for the study. The sensitivity of staphylococcal cultures to Clindamycin was done in-vitro and dogs were treated with Clinidamycin @ 11mg/kg b.wt. for 21 days and response to therapy was assessed. All 12 isolates were sensitive to Clindamycin in-vitro. Eleven dogs treated with Clindamycin showed excellent response. Complete resolution of infection was observed on 21st day in seven cases. Recovery was observed in 28 days in another four cases. In one case, even after two months of treatment with Clindamycin, complete cure was not obtained. Visceral gout is characterized by precipitation of urates in the kidneys and on the serous surfaces of the heart, liver, mesenteries, air sacs or peritoneum. Visceral urate deposition is generally due to a failure of urinary excretion which may be due to obstruction of ureters, renal damage or dehydration. Dehydration due to water deprivation is a common cause of visceral gout in domestic poultry. Thirty dogs with canine otitis externa were evaluated for otocariasis. Examination confirmed two were positive for Otodectus cyanotis, one for Demodex canis and one for Rhipicephalus sanguinus. Clinical symptoms observed ¡were severe head shaking, ear scratching and ear pinna erythema. Otocariasis due to Otodectus cyanotis and Rhipicephalus sanguinus infestations were successfully treated with Ivermectin @ 200 ng/kg body weight s/c two times at two weeks apart.
