To measure the levels of B cell-activating factor (BAFF) and endogenous anti-BAFF autoantibodies in a cohort of multi-ethnic Asian systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients in Singapore, to determine their correlation with disease activity. Serum samples from 121 SLE patients and 24 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were assayed for BAFF and anti-BAFF immunoglobulin (Ig)G antibody levels by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The lowest reliable detection limit for anti-BAFF-IgG antibody levels was defined as 2 standard deviations (s.d.) from blank. Correlation of serum BAFF and anti-BAFF IgG levels with disease activity [scored by SLE Activity Measure revised (SLAM-R)], and disease manifestations were determined in these 121 patients. SLE patients had elevated BAFF levels compared to controls; mean 820 ± 40 pg/ml and 152 pg ± 45/ml, respectively [mean ± standard error of the mean (s.e.m.), P < 0·01], which were correlated positively with anti-dsDNA antibody levels ( r = 0·253, P < 0·03), and SLAM-R scores ( r = 0·627, P < 0·01). In addition, SLE patients had significantly higher levels of anti-BAFF IgG, which were correlated negatively with disease activity ( r = -0·436, P < 0·01), levels of anti-dsDNA antibody ( r = -0·347, P < 0·02) and BAFF ( r = -0·459, P < 0·01). The majority of patients in this multi-ethnic Asian SLE cohort had elevated levels of BAFF and anti-BAFF antibodies. Anti-BAFF autoantibody levels correlated negatively with clinical disease activity, anti-dsDNA and BAFF levels, suggesting that they may be disease-modifying. Our results provide further information about the complexity of BAFF pathophysiology in different SLE disease populations and phenotypes, and suggest that studies of the influence of anti-cytokine antibodies in different SLE populations will be required when selecting patients for trials using targeted anti-cytokine therapies. Adrenal myelolipoma is a rare, benign tumor consisting of adipose tissue and hematopoetic elements. It is generally diagnosed as an incidental finding due to its nonfunctioning, asymptomatic nature (Meaglia and Schmidt J Urol 147:1089, 1992). With increasing size, however, as seen in this case, myelolipomas can cause flank pain and abdominal distention. AC and DC conductivities of complexes of Li salts with the amphiphilic helical polyether poly[2,5,8,11,14-pentaoxapentadecamethylene(5-hexadecyloxy-1,3-phenylene)] (I) (Type A complexes) and blends of I with copolymers of poly(tetramethylene oxide) oligomer coupled with either — (CH2-)- (polymer IIC1) or — (CH2)12 — (IIC12) (Type C complexes) are reported. Whereas Type A complexes give reversible AC impedance plots log σ vs. 1/T plots which are ca. 10−7 S cm−1 at ambient, the Type C blends rise to ca. 10−3 S cm−1 at 100 °C and on cooling to ambient maintain this high level. In Type C systems with IIC12 this transformation is stable and permanent. Optical microscopy reveals phase separation of extensive well-organised lamellae of the Type A phase from the Type C blend following heating. Polymer II resides in thin layers in the interlamellar spaces serving to transfer ions between them. This study examines the reproductive cycle, the mechanism of male-on-female pairing behavior and the spawning behavior of Archaster typicus Müller et Troschel. Field studies were conducted in the intertidal zone of the sand beaches at Penghu, Taiwan (23 32′N; 119 33′E) at ebb-tide in 1984 and 1985. The pairing behavior of A. typicus is a reproductive behavior which leads to simultaneous spawning, increasing the probability of fertilization. As the breeding season approaches, sea stars, especially males, display increased mobility. Because only males tend to mount another individual and because males can detect the sex of another individual by contact with the side of their arms, a male-on-female pair is formed when a male encounters a female. Eighty-five percent of the sea stars observed were paired during the pairing season. Spawning by a paired female is closely followed by spawning of its paired male; male spawning, however, does not induce spawning in its paired female. During spawning, the male turns slightly so that its arms overlap the arched arms of the female. The gonad volume of males is much less than that of females. This may result from the high efficiency of fertilization in this species, which does not require a large amount of gametes to be released, or from the higher energetic demands made on the males. Known reproductive patterns in the polychaete family Sabellidae include: (1) broadcasting of gametes, (2) depositing of benthic egg masses, (3) brooding outside the lip of the tube, and (4) brooding within the tube. There is little information for sabellids in the third category; there-fore we have studied the reproductive biology of Sabella (=Demonax) media (Bush), one of the few species known to brood its early developmental stages outside the tube. A total of 32 adults of S. media with egg cocoons were collected from the surfaces of compound ascidians ( Aplidium sp. and Didemnum sp.) and from holdfasts of a brown alga ( Hedophyllum sessile) at Eagle Cove, San Juan Island, Washington, USA, from June 1981 through June 1982, between tidal levels of 0.0 and 0.6 m. The donutshaped cocoons, each containing over 1 000 eggs, are deposited just outside the tube aperture from April through September. Larval development takes place within the cocoon through the 3-setiger stage, at which time the larvae emerge (about 8 d after egg deposition). The newly hatched larvae are demersal and swim near the bottom of the culture dish for 1 d before settlement. Metamorphosis takes nearly a week, and initial formation of the tube is also gradual. The two statocysts of the veliger larva of Rostanga pulchra are positioned within the base of the foot. They are spherical, fluid-filled capsule that contain a large, calcareous statolith and several smaller concretions. The epithelium of the statocyst is composed of 10 ciliated sensory cells (hair cells) and 11 accessory cells. The latter group stains darkly and includes 2 microvillous cells, 7 supporting cells, and 2 glial cells. The hair cells stain lightly and each gives rise to an axon; two types can be distinguished. The first type, in which a minimum of 3 cilia are randomly positioned on the apical cell membrane, is restricted to the upper portion of the statocyst. The second type, in which 9 to 11 cilia are arranged in a slightly curved row, is found exclusively around the base of the statocyst. Each statocyst is connected dorso-laterally to the ipsilateral cerebral ganglion by a short static nerve, formed by axons arising from the hair cells. Ganglionic neurons synapse with these axons as the static nerve enters the cerebral ganglion. The lumen of the statocyst is continuous with a blind constricted canal located beneath the static nerve. A diagram showing the structure of the statocyst and its association with the nervous system is presented. Possible functions of the statocyst in relation to larval behavior are discussed. The cephalic sensory organ in the veliger larva of Rostanga pulchra is situated dorsally between the rhinophores, emerging as a tuft of cilia. This organ is made up of three types of sensory cells, and based on their morphology have been termed ampullary, parampullary and ciliary tuft cells. The cell bodies of the organ originate in the cerebral commissure, and their dendrites pass to the epidermis as three tracts. Dendrites terminate in the epidermis to form a sectorial field. Axons of these cells run into the mass of neurites in the cerebral commissure but no synapses were observed in this area. Morphological evidence suggests that the cephalic sensory organ may function in chemoreception and mechanoreception related to substrate selection at settlement, feeding, or other behaviors. Ptilosarcus (Leioptilus) guerneyi (Gray) maintained in the laboratory, were observed to spawn in late March, 1972. Gametes, developed in the leaf proper, discharged through the mouths of feeding polyps and were fertilized externally in the sea water. The sea pen's eggs are 500 to 600 μ in diameter; a large female is capable of producing over 200,000 eggs in one season. A pear-shaped and free-swimming planula larva developed 4 days after fertilization, at a temperature of 12 °C. The larvae were ready to settle and metamorphose when 7 days old if favorable substratum was available, but would remain as planulae for at least 30 days if kept in glass dishes only. The 30-day-old larvae would metamorphose if a suitable substratum (coarse sand, for example) was presented. The larvae do not feed and, hence, development is lecithotrophic. Studies of histogenesis showed that metamorphosis greatly enhanced the rate of cellular differentiation. The high fecundity, lecithotrophic development, and the ability of substratum selection by the larvae explain the success of this species in maintaining a high-density population in many areas of sandy substratum in the shallow waters of Puget Sound (USA), despite the fact that it is preyed upon by 7 species of predators. The article reports on mandatory temperature monitoring in schools during severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). During SARS outbreak in Singapore, there was concern that SARS could spread rapidly in schools. Since SARS patients are infectious only when febrile, twice daily temperature monitoring of all schoolchildren from 6 to 16 years of age was made mandatory in Singapore during the period April 30 to July 25, 2003. All pupils were issued with a personal thermometer and trained to take their own temperatures under the supervision of teachers. The objectives of this study were to determine the incidence and causes for persistently high temperature readings in asymptomatic Singapore schoolchildren.

Holothuria leucospilota Brandt, the large black sea cucumber, is a non-selective deposit feeder, and is commonly found in the bottom of shallow waters in Hong Kong, where the sediments are often polluted with heavy metals. This study was designed to test the possibility of heavy metal accumulation by the sea cucumber at two sites in Hong Kong. Atomic absorption spectrophotometer was used to measure Cu and Zn concentrations in various tissue/organs of the animal as well as in the sediments. The result indicated that H. leucospilota accumulated zinc in the longitudinal muscle bands (97.27-98.07 ppm in dry weight) and in the respiratory tree (83.92-89.64 ppm in dry weight). Copper concentrations in these two organs were much lower than that of zinc. After the animals were kept in the aquarium without sediment for 40 days, zinc concentration of the longitudinal muscle and respiratory tree decreased by 48% and 39% respectively whereas copper concentration remained unchanged. The concentrations of zinc and copper in the sediment at the two sites differed significantly but the metal level in the animals from the two sites were similar, suggesting that this sea cucumber was not an ideal bioindicator of heavy metal pollution in the sediment.
