Background: Fifteen percent of patients with cancer experience symptomatic sequelae, which impair post-COVID-19 outcomes. In this study, we investigated whether a proinflammatory status is associated with the development of COVID-19 sequelae.Methods: OnCovid recruited 2795 consecutive patients who were diagnosed with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 infection between February 27, 2020, and February 14, 2021. This analysis focused on COVID-19 survivors who underwent a clinical reassessment after the exclusion of patients with hematological malignancies. We evaluated the association of inflammatory markers collected at COVID-19 diagnosis with sequelae, considering the impact of previous systemic anticancer therapy. All statistical tests were 2-sided.Results: Of 1339 eligible patients, 203 experienced at least 1 sequela (15.2%). Median baseline C-reactive protein (CRP; 77.5 mg/L vs 22.2 mg/L, P < .001), lactate dehydrogenase (310 UI/L vs 274 UI/L, P = .03), and the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR; 6.0 vs 4.3, P = .001) were statistically significantly higher among patients who experienced sequelae, whereas no association was reported for the platelet to lymphocyte ratio and the OnCovid Inflammatory Score, which includes albumin and lymphocytes. The widest area under the ROC curve (AUC) was reported for baseline CRP (AUC = 0.66, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.63 to 0.69), followed by the NLR (AUC = 0.58, 95% CI: 0.55 to 0.61) and lactate dehydrogenase (AUC = 0.57, 95% CI: 0.52 to 0.61). Using a fixed categorical multivariable analysis, high CRP (odds ratio [OR] = 2.56, 95% CI: 1.67 to 3.91) and NLR (OR = 1.45, 95% CI: 1.01 to 2.10) were confirmed to be statistically significantly associated with an increased risk of sequelae. Exposure to chemotherapy was associated with a decreased risk of sequelae (OR = 0.57, 95% CI: 0.36 to 0.91), whereas no associations with immune checkpoint inhibitors, endocrine therapy, and other types of systemic anticancer therapy were found.Conclusions: Although the association between inflammatory status, recent chemotherapy and sequelae warrants further investigation, our findings suggest that a deranged proinflammatory reaction at COVID-19 diagnosis may predict for sequelae development. Despite several crises as successive masters fell out of favour, it remained one of a small minority of urban bridewells able to set prisoners to work, whilst also developing a range of relief roles: providing work for the destitute, temporary refuge for vulnerable children and adults, and later pre-apprenticeship training for boys from the hospital school. Background: Specialist palliative care team (SPCT) involvement has been shown to improve symptom control and end-of-life care for patients with cancer, but little is known as to how these have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here, we report SPCT involvement during the first wave of the pandemic and compare outcomes for patients with cancer who received and did not receive SPCT input from multiple European cancer centres. Methods: From the OnCovid repository (N = 1318), we analysed cancer patients aged ⩾18 diagnosed with COVID-19 between 26 February and 22 June 2020 who had complete specialist palliative care team data (SPCT+ referred; SPCT− not referred). Results: Of 555 eligible patients, 317 were male (57.1%), with a median age of 70 years (IQR 20). At COVID-19 diagnosis, 44.7% were on anti-cancer therapy and 53.3% had ⩾1 co-morbidity. Two hundred and six patients received SPCT input for symptom control (80.1%), psychological support (54.4%) and/or advance care planning (51%). SPCT+ patients had more 'Do not attempt cardio-pulmonary resuscitation' orders completed prior to (12.6% versus 3.7%) and during admission (50% versus 22.1%, p < 0.001), with more SPCT+ patients deemed suitable for treatment escalation (50% versus 22.1%, p < 0.001). SPCT involvement was associated with higher discharge rates from hospital for end-of-life care (9.7% versus 0%, p < 0.001). End-of-life anticipatory prescribing was higher in SPCT+ patients, with opioids (96.3% versus 47.1%) and benzodiazepines (82.9% versus 41.2%) being used frequently for symptom control. Conclusion: SPCT referral facilitated symptom control, emergency care and discharge planning, as well as high rates of referral for psychological support than previously reported. Objectives: To assess the efficacy and tolerability of the dual epidermal growth factor receptor/vascular endothelial growth factor receptor inhibitor, vandetanib, in combination with carboplatin and gemcitabine in the first‐line treatment of patients with advanced transitional cell carcinoma urothelial cancer (UC) who were unsuitable for cisplatin. Patients and methods: From 2011 to 2014, 82 patients were randomised from 16 hospitals across the UK into the TOUCAN double‐blind, placebo‐controlled randomised Phase II trial, receiving six 21‐day cycles of intravenous carboplatin (target area under the concentration versus time curve 4.5, day 1) and gemcitabine (1000 mg/m2 days 1 and 8) combined with either oral vandetanib 100 mg or placebo (once daily). Progression‐free survival (PFS; primary endpoint), adverse events, tolerability and feasibility of use, objective response rate and overall survival (OS) were evaluated. Intention‐to‐treat and per‐protocol analyses were used to analyse the primary endpoint. Results: The 82 patients were randomised 1:1 to vandetanib (n = 40) or placebo (n = 42), and 25 patients (30%) completed six cycles of all allocated treatment. Toxicity Grade ≥3 was experienced in 80% (n = 32) and 76% (n = 32) of patients in the vandetanib and placebo arms, respectively. The median PFS was 6.8 and 8.8 months for the vandetanib and placebo arms, respectively (hazard ratio [HR] 1.07, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.65–1.76; P = 0.71); the median OS was 10.8 vs 13.8 months (HR 1.41, 95% CI 0.79–2.52; P = 0.88); and radiological response rates were 50% and 55%. Conclusion: There is no evidence that vandetanib improves clinical outcome in this setting. Bamboo which belongs to the Poaceae (grass) family has been found chiefly in warm or tropical regions and it is an extremely important component in the lives of the indigenous people of Meghalaya. It is a fast growing, widespread, renewable, versatile and environment-enhancing resource. Apart from its traditional uses, bamboo has various new applications as an alternative to rapidly depleting wood resources and as an option to many expensive construction and furnishing materials. It stands as an ideal species capable of maintaining conservation of soil and moisture, restoration of degraded land, livelihood and economic security due to its manifold uses and industrial applications. A total of 30 species under 14 genera were recorded and out of which a total of 23 species have been used traditionally in the livelihood of mankind by the different ethnic societies of state. The most commonly used species of bamboos are Bambusa balcooa, Bambusa bambos, Bambusa cacharensis, Bambusa jaintiana, Dendrocalamus hookeri, Dendrocalamus hamiltonii, Melocanna baccifera, Schizostachyum mannii, Schizostachyum helferi. Introduction: The presence of muscle mass depletion is associated with poor outcomes and survival in cancer. Alongside muscle mass, assessment of muscle strength or physical performance is essential for the diagnosis of sarcopenia. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a prevalent form of cancer with high mortality, and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) Performance Status (PS) is commonly used to assess patients' suitability for treatment. However, a significant proportion of patients with good PS are unable to complete multidisciplinary team (MDT)-planned treatment. Little is known about the ability of objective measurements of physical performance in predicting patients' ability to complete MDT-planned treatment and outcomes in NSCLC.Objectives: We sought to establish whether physical performance, utilising the short physical performance battery (SPPB), alongside muscle mass measurements, was able to predict receipt and completion of MDT-planned treatment, with a focus on chemotherapy in NSCLC.Materials and Methods: Participants with NSCLC treated through a single lung cancer MDT and ECOG PS 0-2 were recruited and the following assessed: body composition [bioelectrical impedance (BIA) and whole body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in a subset], physical performance (SPPB), PS and nutritional status. We recorded receipt and completion of chemotherapy, as well as any adverse effects, hospitalisations, and treatment delays.Results: We included a total of 62 participants with NSCLC, and in 26 of these, the MDT-planned treatment was chemotherapy. Participants with earlier stage disease and weight loss of <10% were more likely to complete MDT-planned treatment (p < 0.001 and p < 0.05). Patients with a higher total SPPB score were more likely to complete more cycles of chemotherapy as well as the full course. Quicker gait speeds and sit-to-stand times were associated with completion of three or more cycles of chemotherapy (all p < 0.05). For every unit increase in SPPB score, there was a 28.2% decrease in adverse events, hospitalisations and delays of chemotherapy (incidence rate ratio 0.718, p = 0.001), whilst ECOG PS showed no correlation with these outcomes.Conclusion: Assessing physical performance by SPPB is quick and simple to do in clinical settings and may give better indication of likely chemotherapy treatment course completion than muscle mass alone and ECOG PS. The evolving field of personalised medicine is playing an increasingly important role in cancer prevention, diagnosis, prognosis and therapeutics. Its importance in clinical management is demonstrated by the recent introduction into routine clinical practice of various individualised, molecularly targeted therapies with increased efficacy and/or reduced toxicity. The identification of cancer predisposition genes, such as the BRCA genes in breast cancer, permits screening programmes to identify patients 'at-risk' of developing cancer and helps them make decisions on individual risk-modification behaviours. Personalised medicine also plays an increasingly important role in cancer treatment. It is increasingly clear that there are molecularly distinct subtypes of various common cancers, with different therapeutic approaches required for each subtype, for example, the use of the monoclonal antibodies (trastuzumab and cetuximab) in HER2-positive breast cancer and wild-type KRAS colorectal cancer; tyrosine kinase inhibitors (imatinib, gefitinib, erlotinib and crizotinib) in chronic myeloid leukaemia, gastrointestinal stromal tumours and non-small-cell lung cancer and intracellular agents (vemurafenib and olaparib) in metastatic malignant melanoma and ovarian, breast and prostate cancer. The efficacy of various targeted therapies in such disparate tumours suggests that we are entering an era in which treatment decisions will be based on tumour molecular abnormality profile or 'signature,' rather than tumour tissue type or anatomical site of origin, improving patient prognosis and quality of life. A significant proportion of those with reportedly good ECOG performance status (PS) fail to receive planned multidisciplinary team (MDT) treatment, often for functional reasons, but an objective decline in physical performance is not well described. Sarcopenia, or loss of muscle mass, is an integral part of cancer cachexia. However, changes in both muscle mass and physical performance may predate clinically overt cachexia, and may be present even with normal body mass index. Physical fitness for treatment is currently subjectively assessed by means of the PS score, which may be inadequate in predicting tolerance to treatment. This study aims to evaluate whether measuring physical performance and muscle mass at baseline in NSCLC patients, in addition to PS score, is able to predict commencement and successful completion of MDT-planned treatment. Methods/design: This is a prospective, single-centre exploratory study of NSCLC patients attending a Rapid Access Lung Cancer clinic. Baseline data collected are (methods in brackets): physical performance (Short Physical Performance Battery), muscle mass (bioelectrical impedance ± dual energy x-ray absorptiometry), patient and physician-assessed PS (ECOG and Karnofsky), nutritional status and presence of cachexia. Longitudinal data consists of receipt and completion of MDT treatment plan. The primary outcome measure is commencement of MDT-planned treatment, and important secondary outcomes include successful completion of treatment, length of stay in surgical patients, and risk of chemotherapy- and radiotherapy-related side effects. Objectives: There is growing awareness of the relationship between sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass and function), and outcomes in cancer, making it a potential target for future therapies. In order to inform future research and practice, we undertook a systematic review of factors associated with loss of muscle mass, and the relationship between muscle function and muscle mass in lung cancer, a common condition associated with poor outcomes. Design: We conducted a computerised systematic literature search on five databases. Studies were included if they explored muscle mass as an outcome measure in patients with lung cancer, and were published in English. Setting: Secondary care. Participants: Patients with lung cancer. Primary outcome: Factors associated with loss of muscle mass and muscle function, or sarcopenia, and the clinical impact thereof in patients with lung cancer. Results: We reviewed 5726 citations, and 35 articles were selected for analysis. Sarcopenia, as defined by reduced muscle mass alone, was found to be very prevalent in patients with lung cancer, regardless of body mass index, and where present was associated with poorer functional status and overall survival. There were diverse studies exploring molecular and metabolic factors in the development of loss of muscle mass; however, the precise mechanisms that contribute to sarcopenia and cachexia remain uncertain. The effect of nutritional supplements and ATP infusions on muscle mass showed conflicting results. There are very limited data on the correlation between degree of sarcopenia and muscle function, which has a nonlinear relationship in older non-cancer populations. Conclusions: Loss of muscle mass is a significant contributor to morbidity in patients with lung cancer. Loss of muscle mass and function may predate clinically overt cachexia, underlining the importance of evaluating sarcopenia, rather than weight loss alone. Background AZD4877 is a potent inhibitor of the mitotic spindle kinesin, Eg5. Early-phase clinical studies in a broad range of cancers showed that AZD4877 is well tolerated. This Phase II study evaluated the efficacy, safety and pharmacokinetics (C) of AZD4877 in patients with previously treated advanced urothelial cancer (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT00661609). Patients and methods AZD4877 25 mg was administered once-weekly for 3 weeks of each 4-week cycle until disease progression, death, unacceptable toxicity or withdrawal. The primary objective was to determine the objective response rate (RECIST). Recruitment was to be halted if ≤2 of the first 20 evaluable patients achieved an objective tumor response. C was assessed on days 1 and 8 of cycle 1. Results None of the first 20 patients evaluable for efficacy achieved an objective response; enrollment was therefore halted. During this initial analysis, a further 21 patients were recruited. Overall, 39 patients were evaluable for efficacy, including one with confirmed partial response (PR) and seven patients with stable disease for ≥8 weeks (including one unconfirmed PR). The most commonly reported treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs) were neutropenia (22 patients), fatigue (12), leukopenia (7) and constipation (6); the most commonly reported grade ≥3 TRAE was neutropenia (21). Four patients had serious TRAEs. On days 1 and 8, the geometric mean C of AZD4877 was 138 ng/ml (CV = 75 %) and 144 ng/ml (CV = 109 %), respectively. Conclusions AZD4877 was generally tolerable in patients with advanced urothelial cancer. Given the limited clinical efficacy, further development of AZD4877 in urothelial cancer is not planned. BACKGROUND: Meta-analysis data demonstrate a 5% absolute survival benefit for neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) using cisplatin-based combination regimens in the radical treatment of muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC). However, there are no randomized, controlled trial data on the optimum regimen. Accelerated methotrexate, vinblastine, doxorubicin, and cisplatin (AMVAC) is a dose-intense regimen that has the potential to minimize delays to definitive, potentially curative therapy. A retrospective analysis is presented of the efficacy and toxicity of AMVAC as NAC in patients with MIBC and its impact on the patient pathway. METHODS: Eighty consecutive patients with MIBC were treated with AMVAC as NAC by 2 UK multidisciplinary uro-oncology teams. Three or 4 cycles of AMVAC (methotrexate 30 mg/m2, vinblastine 3 mg/m2, doxorubicin 30 mg/m2, and cisplatin 70 mg/m2) were given at 2-week intervals, with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor support, prior to either radical surgery or radical radiotherapy. RESULTS: All planned cycles of chemotherapy were completed, without dose reduction or delay in 84% of patients. All 80 patients subsequently received their planned definitive therapy. Grade 3/4 toxicities were seen in 26% of the 42% of patients for whom toxicity data are available, including 12% grade 3/4 neutropenia. Pathological complete response to AMVAC was seen in 43% of 60 surgical patients. Objective radiological local response was seen in 83% of 57 evaluable patients. Two-year disease-free and overall survival were 65% and 77%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: AMVAC is safe and appears to be a well-tolerated and effective NAC regimen for MIBC. It minimizes delays to definitive treatment and produces excellent pathological and radiological response rates. It is an appropriate comparator for future randomized trials. In many common cancers, dissemination of secondary tumors via the lymph nodes poses the most significant threat to the affected individual. Metastatic cells often reach the lymph nodes by mimicking the molecular mechanisms used by hematopoietic cells to traffic to peripheral lymphoid organs. Therefore, we exploited naive T cell trafficking in order to chaperone an oncolytic virus to lymphoid organs harboring metastatic cells. Metastatic burden was initially reduced by viral oncolysis and was then eradicated, as tumor cell killing in the lymph node and spleen generated protective antitumor immunity. Lymph node purging of tumor cells was possible even in virus-immune mice. Adoptive transfer of normal T cells loaded with oncolytic virus into individuals with cancer would be technically easy to implement both to reduce the distribution of metastases and to vaccinate the affected individual in situ against micrometastatic disease. OBJECTIVE To report our experience of high-dose chemotherapy (HDC) with haematopoietic stem-cell support (HSC) in patients with poor risk, relapsed or refractory germ cell tumours (GCTs), as this treatment might offer effective salvage for patients with disseminated GCTs. PATIENTS AND METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the medical records and database for 33 patients with GCT who were treated with HDC with HSC in our centres. RESULTS Thirty-three patients were treated with either one or two cycles of carboplatin and etoposide-based HDC with HSC support, between March 1990 and October 2003. Twenty-six patients (79%) had nonseminomatous GCT, six seminoma (18%), and one (3%) a combined seminoma and teratoma. Twenty patients (60%) had previously had a clinical complete response after previous chemotherapy ± surgery for residual disease. Most patients were treated with HDC for relapsing (49%) or relative refractory disease (30%), but seven (21%) had HDC in the first partial remission. The complete response rate to HDC was 58%. There were two treatment-related deaths (6%). As of April 2005, 18 patients were alive and disease-free with a median (range) follow-up of 72 (0.5–174) months. The 5-year overall and progression-free survival probabilities were 57% and 56%, respectively. The median (range) times to absolute neutrophil count recovery (≥500/µL) were 13 (9–24) and 12 (10–15) days, and for platelet count recovery (≥20 000/µL) were 16 (7–50) and 13 (11–17) days, in the first and second cycles, respectively. CONCLUSION The role of HDC with HSC support in metastatic GCTs remains controversial, and data from randomized controlled trials are needed. Antigen-specific T cells circulate freely and accumulate specifically at sites of antigen expression. To enhance the survival and targeting of systemically delivered viral vectors, we exploited the observation that retroviral particles adhere nonspecifically, or 'hitchhike,' to the surface of T cells. Adoptive transfer of antigen-specific T cells, loaded with viruses encoding interleukin (IL)-12 or Herpes Simplex Virus thymidine kinase (HSVtk), cured established metastatic disease where adoptive T-cell transfer alone was not effective. Productive hand off correlated with local heparanase expression either from malignant tumor cells and/or as a result of T-cell activation by antigen, providing high levels of selectivity for viral transfer to metastatic tumors in vivo. Protection, concentration and targeting of viruses by adsorption to cell carriers represent a new technique for systemic delivery of vectors, in fully immunocompetent hosts, for a variety of diseases in which delivery of genes may be therapeutically beneficial. High-level systemic delivery of viral vectors to tumors has proved problematic as a result of immune neutralization, nonspecific adhesion, and clearance of circulating viral particles. Some cell types localize to tumors in response to particular biological properties associated with tumor growth. Their use to deliver viral vectors to tumors would allow precious viral stocks to be protected until they can be released at high local concentrations. Here, we describe a mechanism by which retroviral vector production by T cells can be regulated by a tumor-specific trigger through engagement of a chimeric immune receptor (CIR) with its target antigen. The virus that is released from the T cells can also be transcriptionally targeted. Finally, we show that it is possible to use vector-loaded, antigen-triggered human T cells as therapeutic, tumorspecific vector delivery cells in models of both local intratumoral and systemic delivery to both lung and liver metastases. We previously developed a refined, tumor-selective adenovirus, Ad5NULL-A20, harboring tropism ablating mutations in each major capsid protein, to ablate all native means of infection. We incorporated a 20-mer peptide (A20) in the fiber knob for selective infection via αvβ6 integrin, a marker of aggressive epithelial cancers. Methods: To ascertain the selectivity of Ad5NULL-A20 for αvβ6-positive tumor cell lines of pancreatic and breast cancer origin, we performed reporter gene and cell viability assays. Biodistribution of viral vectors in mice harboring xenografts with low, medium, and high αvβ6 levels was quantified by qPCR for viral genomes 48 h post intravenous administration. Results: Ad5NULL-A20 vector transduced cells in an αvβ6-selective manner, whilst cell killing mediated by oncolytic Ad5NULL-A20 was αvβ6-selective. Biodistribution analysis following intravenous administration into mice bearing breast cancer xenografts demonstrated that Ad5NULL-A20 resulted in significantly reduced liver accumulation coupled with increased tumor accumulation compared to Ad5 in all three models, with tumor-to-liver ratios improved as a function of αvβ6 expression. Conclusions: Ad5NULL-A20-based virotherapies efficiently target αvβ6-integrin-positive tumors following intravenous administration, validating the potential of Ad5NULL-A20 for systemic applications, enabling tumor-selective overexpression of virally encoded therapeutic transgenes. The analgesic efficacy of locally injected bupivacaine was studied in 40 patients undergoing hemorrhoidectomy. After a standard Milligan-Morgan hemorrhoidectomy, 40 age- and sex-matched patients were randomized to receive either 0.5 percent bupivacaine (1.5 mg/kg) in adrenaline solution (1:200,000) injected into the perianal area, or equivalent volumes of adrenaline solution. Intramuscular opiate was available on demand during the postoperative period, and the amount and timing of analgesia given was recorded. All patients noted their pain on a daily basis using a linear analogue scale, and all patients answered a questionnaire assessing analgesic efficacy. Although the median time interval between surgery and first analgesic demand was nearly four times greater for patients receiving bupivacaine compared with adrenaline solution, there was no difference in the levels of pain recorded or in the overall opiate requirements. Local injection of bupivacaine after hemorrhoidectomy provides initial pain relief, but patients do not obtain an overall analgesic benefit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We studied the binding of tritium-labeled deferoxamine, a strong iron chelator, to crocidolite asbestos fibers and . In aqueous suspension of asbestos, deferoxamine binding was rapid and strong, suggesting specific binding to iron. For the experiments, diffusion chambers containing native asbestos fibers or deferoxamine-washed asbestos were implanted in the peritoneal cavities of mice. Five days after parenteral injection of tritiated deferoxamine chambers were removed and the asbestos counted. More than twice as much label(2206 ± 348 c.p.m./100 mg asbestos) was bound to the native asbestos as compared to the deferoxamine-washed asbestos (1080 ± 201 c.p.m./100 mg asbestos), suggesting specific binding . Background: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) frequently presents in advanced stages. A significant proportion of those with reportedly good ECOG performance status (PS) fail to receive planned multidisciplinary team (MDT) treatment, often for functional reasons, but an objective decline in physical performance is not well described. Sarcopenia, or loss of muscle mass, is an integral part of cancer cachexia. However, changes in both muscle mass and physical performance may predate clinically overt cachexia, and may be present even with normal body mass index. Physical fitness for treatment is currently subjectively assessed by means of the PS score, which may be inadequate in predicting tolerance to treatment. This study aims to evaluate whether measuring physical performance and muscle mass at baseline in NSCLC patients, in addition to PS score, is able to predict commencement and successful completion of MDT-planned treatment.Methods/design: This is a prospective, single-centre exploratory study of NSCLC patients attending a Rapid Access Lung Cancer clinic. Baseline data collected are (methods in brackets): physical performance (Short Physical Performance Battery), muscle mass (bioelectrical impedance ± dual energy x-ray absorptiometry), patient and physician-assessed PS (ECOG and Karnofsky), nutritional status and presence of cachexia. Longitudinal data consists of receipt and completion of MDT treatment plan. The primary outcome measure is commencement of MDT-planned treatment, and important secondary outcomes include successful completion of treatment, length of stay in surgical patients, and risk of chemotherapy- and radiotherapy-related side effects.Discussion: A more comprehensive assessment of phenotype, particularly with regards to physical performance and muscle mass, will provide additional discriminatory information of patients' fitness for treatment. If positive, this study has the potential to identify targets for early intervention in those who are at risk of deterioration. The Critical Sea Test (CST) is an empirical Navy program which collects low-frequency (100-1000 Hz) environmental acoustics measurements in order to provide a diverse, high-quality database for sonar performance prediction. During the course of its experiments in direct path bottom reverberation, CST has observed frequency, grazing angle, and waveform behaviors which differ significantly from those assumed in commonly available bottomscattering strength models. For empirical programs, deviations from standard models are significant because they limit the ability to extrapolate survey measurements into sonar performance scenarios. The most controversial aspect of the coherent source experiments has been the observation of a pulse length dependence in the scattering strength measurements beyond the linear term normally associated with ensonified area. This paper discusses CST's bottomscattering strength measurement technique and summarizes the pulse length ''anomaly'' results for a variety of geographic areas. Because these results run counter to standard modeling assumptions, this paper will also discuss the data quality procedures used to reach these conclusions. The derivation of scattering strengths from acoustic field data involves applying the active sonar equation to the measured reverberation response. However, due to the typical nonstationarity observed in the direct-path reverberation time series (e.g., 10 dB/s), the choice of appropriate corresponding grazing angles becomes more problematical as the duration of the transmitted signal increases. Direct-path measurements of low-frequency (200-1000 Hz) acoustic surface scattering were made in the Gulf of Alaska in the February of 1992 using interleaved SUS and pulsed waveforms (cw, FM). Backscattering strengths were derived for pulse lengths varying between 50 ms and 2.4 s. A comparison of results revealed that scattering strengths have a nontrivial dependence on signal type and pulse length, and on the signal-processing methodology used in their derivation. A comprehensive low-frequency (<1000-Hz) low grazing angle (<30°) sea surface acoustic scatter experiment was conducted during February/March 1992 in the Gulf of Alaska. During data collection, wind speeds ranged from 3-17.5 m/s and sea states from 2-6. cw waveforms less than 500 ms in length at 250, 380, 900, and 935 Hz were transmitted by three collinear vertical towed source arrays. Surface scattered energy was received in 17 cosine-spaced beams by a horizontal source-ship-towed line array. This experimental geometry allowed measurement of surface scattering strength as a function of mean grazing angle, frequency, and horizontal bistatic angle. Analysis of these measurements in terms of these dependencies is presented along with comparison to current surface scattering strength model predictions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During February/March 1992 a comprehensive low-frequency (<1000 Hz) and low-grazing angle (<30 deg) acoustic sea surface scatter and air/sea interaction experiment was conducted in the Gulf of Alaska. For comparison with acoustic models, measurements were made of air/sea boundary descriptions such as near-surface bubble characteristics, wind speed, wave height, whitecap coverage, volume scatterers (fish), wind stress, etc. A variety of waveforms of short duration (<500 ms) were scattered from a surface path simultaneously isonified by three collinear vertical towed source arrays at frequencies around 250, 400, and 1000 Hz. Surface-scattered energy was received on a horizontal line array towed by the source ship. During the measurement wind speeds from 4 to 19 m/s and rms wave heights from 0.9 to 2.3 m occurred associated with sea states 2 to 6. Surface grazing angles of 4 to 32 deg and horizontal bistatic angles of 15 to 82 deg were observed. Scattering strength analysis includes frequency, grazing angle, waveform, and wind speed dependence as well as correlation with air/sea boundary descriptors. Current scattering strength model predictions utilizing the appropriate measured environmental parameters will be compared to measured data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
