Background: Santa Ana is home to an Afro-descendant rural population of the island of Barú in Cartagena, Colombia. While a popular area for tourism, Santa Ana's population is affected by multidimensional poverty, precarious work conditions, homelessness, broken streets and sewer systems, limited quality education, and a lack of recreation and sport spaces. While Santa Ana's Community Action Board aims to unify efforts and resources to solve these problems, the state's capacity to meet the requirements of the Board is limited. Methods: We evaluated the relationship between healthy lifestyles and characteristics of Santa Ana's school using the Our Voice Citizen Science Research Method. This systemic approach combines information and communication technologies with group facilitation to empower adolescents to: 1) collect and discuss data about factors in their local environments that facilitate or hinder well-being within their school community; 2) identify relevant local stakeholders who could help to address the issues identified; and 3) advocate collectively for local improvements to support increased well-being at a community level. Results: Eleven citizen scientists ages 13 to 17 years from the science club of Institución Educativa Santa Ana were recruited and together conducted 11 walks within the school to collect data about the facilitators and barriers to student well-being. They identified barriers to well-being related to school infrastructure, furniture, bathrooms, and sense of belonging. They then advocated with school stakeholders and reached agreements on concrete actions to address identified barriers, including fostering a culture among students of caring for school property and presenting their findings to the community action board. This methodology allowed the community to realize how students can become agents of change and take collective action when motivated by solution-oriented methodologies such as Our Voice. Project ripple effects, including greater empowerment and participation in collective actions by students, also were observed. Conclusions: This study underscores the importance of the school's built environment in the well-being of students in rural areas. The Our Voice method provided the opportunity to inform school-based interventions, and promoted ripple effects that expanded productive dialogue to the community level and generated systemic actions involving actors outside of the school community. The production of biofuels has had a great impact on climate change and the reduction of the use of fossil fuels. There are different technologies used for the separation and production of biofuels, which allow having compounds such as ethanol, methane, oxygen, and hydrogen, one of these promising technologies is the Pressure Swing Adsorption process (PSA). The objectives of this article focus on the production and purification of compounds that achieve purities of 99.5% bioethanol, 94.85% biohydrogen, 95.00% medical oxygen, and 99.99% biomethane through the PSA process; also, a significant review is contemplated to identify the different natural and synthetic adsorbents that have greater adsorption capacity, the different configurations in which a PSA operates are studied and identified, and the different mathematical models that describe the dynamic behavior of all the variables are established that interact in this PSA process, parametric studies are carried out in order to identify the variables that have the greatest effect on the purity obtained. The results obtained in this review allow facilitating the calculation of parameters, the optimization of the process, the automatic control to manipulate certain variables and to achieve the rejection of disturbances to have a recovery and production of biofuels with a high degree of purity. In this study, the contingent valuation method is used to appraise the value and market potential of mining heritage, serving as a means to evaluate these heritage assets for the society, for the purposes of entertainment, culture or recreation. The method has been applied to the specific case of the region of Extremadura (Spain), an area with a prevalent mining tradition that dates back to prehistoric times, boasting countless mining-related remains of recognised value. Among those vestiges, 20 enclaves were selected for use in this study following research carried out by the Institute of Geology and Mining in Spain. A survey has been used to estimate the public willingness to pay for the conservation, restoration and protection of mining heritage assets that could be visited by both local people and others. Three payment values (7, 13 and 20 euros) were established to classify respondents' responses and thus estimate the degree of interest expressed in currency units, which were shown by the mining heritage of Extremadura as a possible destination for a tourist trip. While a high percentage (43%) of respondents did not know what the mining heritage is, after the introduction to the survey included in the surveys, it is concluded that most would be willing to pay an amount to visit it. The results reveal a market potential of more than €130 million without bearing in mind the indirect value generated by these resources, underscoring the high value that society attaches to these mining remains. We carried out the in situ synthesis of gold nanoparticles inside a natural clinoptilolite-type zeolite matrix, using ascorbic acid as reducing agent. The microstructure of both zeolite and zeolite-gold nanocomposite was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM), and Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) techniques. Size distribution as assessed by STEM indicated that 60% of gold nanoparticles measured less than 2.5 nm. Determination of the surface area by the BET method revealed a specific value of 27.35 m2/g. The catalytic activity of zeolite-gold regarding methylene blue degradation under different light-exposing conditions was evaluated by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The results indicated that 50% degradation was achieved in only 11 min in presence of sunlight. This reaction was faster in comparison with those obtained using a white LED light. A notable aspect of this study is that catalysis was carried out without the addition of any strong reducing agents, such as sodium borohydride (NaBH4). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the past two decades, the European political authorities have increasingly become interested in assessing the training received by PhD graduates, considered as a key factor for the socio-economic development of the European Union. However, no agreement has been reached on the parameters to be taken into account in such assessment. This research proposes the time it takes a PhD graduate tofind a job position directly linked to his doctoral training (a suitable job), which indicates how suitable doctoral training is in order to meet market needs. The outcomes allow us to conclude that doctoral training in Spain for the period 1990-2006 turned out to be the right one to meet labour-market needs, as 75% of PhDs found a suitable job during such period and, besides, a high percentage of them found a job during the year following that in which they got the degree. On the other hand, significant differences are observed between both sexes, as the percentage of women whofound a suitable job was lower than men. Finally, the field of knowledge becomes a very significant factor when it comes tofinding a suitable job. Once again, less significant effects are observed in case of women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes the mechanical properties under nanoindentation of a new glassy alloy with a nominal composition of Ni60Nb37B3, in the form of melt-spun ribbons and 1-mm-thick copper mold-cast sheets. The alloy composition was designed based on the synergy between the topological instability criterion and the difference in electronegativity among the elements. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy analyses confirmed that both ribbon and sheet samples possess totally amorphous structures with relatively high thermal stability (supercooled liquid region of about 60 K), as evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Nanoindentation tests revealed that the hardness of this alloy, about 15 GPa, is among the highest reported for metallic glasses. The elastic modulus of the cast sheet is higher and its hardness is similar to that of the ribbon. This correlates well with the different amounts of frozen-in free volume in both types of samples detected by DSC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyses the effect of collective bargaining on within-firm wage dispersion for the case of Spain. What is relevant in the Spanish case is to compare the effect of the two basic levels of bargaining (firm and sector) on wage dispersion. By using the Oaxaca–Blinder decomposition, this paper concludes that collective agreements at firm level have a negative effect on wage dispersion. At the same time, firms that have signed these types of agreements show greater wage dispersion than those covered by agreements at the sector level, owing to the positive and compensating effect of firms’ and workers’ features. Background We present a patient with history of sinus venous thrombosis and hypertension during the last year. Her blood pressure was not controlled d espite drugs, diet, and exercise. She denied symptoms. She does not smoke nor drink alcohol. Her body mass index was 20 kg/m2, NYHA Class I/IV. Case summary A 40-year-old Latin-American female patient, concerned because despite taking verapamil 160 mg/day, losartan 100 mg/day, and hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg/day her diastolic blood pressure was over 100 mmHg. Routine serum and urine lab tests and a transthoracic echocardiogram were done and were normal. The treatment was increased over the next consultations but without control of her blood pressure. She developed resistant hypertension, and she was taking four antihypertensive drugs and two diuretics. A first renal artery Doppler was normal. Because of a high clinical suspicion a renal angio-CT was performed showing bilateral fibromuscular dysplasia. The patient underwent a renal artery angioplasty with balloon with excellent results and better control of her blood pressure after the procedure. Over the next month, her doctors were able to decrease her treatment to two drugs at intermediate doses. Currently, she is doing well and asymptomatic. Discussion Renal artery fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) could be a challenging disease to be diagnosed. Patients with this condition may suffer from symptomatic and resistant hypertension. Many patients do not have abnormalities on their physical exam or in the routine lab tests. Treatment includes renal artery angioplasty if patient is symptomatic and blood pressure is resistant.
