Abstract

The article discusses the changes in water policies in South Africa as it redresses the legacy of inequality from Apartheid. The authors review the historical context of water usage and management in the country. They argue that demand-driven industrial water usage served as a tool for maintaining economic and racial inequality. They discuss attitudes which led to the Water Services Act of 1997 and the National Water Act of 1998. They review the basic principles of decentralization, equality, and efficiency and they discuss their sustainable implementation. They present examples of remaining problems such as acid mine drainage.

The last in a series of three articles which deal with the human resources aspects of mergers and acquisitions, with reference to a particular transaction in the international financial services sector -- the purchase of most of the businesses of Royal Trustco by the Royal Bank of Canada. Deals with events after the merger from a human resources perspective, and describes how two very different international private banking organizations were integrated. The strategy adopted by the Royal Bank of Canada was designed to ensure success for the merged businesses, instead of the failure which research attributes to at least 50 per cent of mergers and acquisitions. Abstract

This is the first of three articles which describe, from a human resource perspective, the various stages of an acquisition in the international financial services sector. Views this from the standpoint of human resource professionals employed by Royal Trustco at the time of the deal, under which most of that company's businesses were bought by Royal Bank of Canada. Deals here with the problems involved in maintaining morale and motivation in the target company during the period when it was "in play", and with the HR stratagems devised to deal with these problems. Suggests that because of the "people" nature of the businesses in question, failure to deal with these problems effectively would, at best, have had an adverse effect on the success of the combined operations after the deal, and might, at worst, have prevented the acquisition from going ahead. Abstract

The author discusses his approach to watercolor painting of old houses and buildings with an illustration using his work "Requiescat." Before painting, he visits the location of the subject to gather important record of it including its detail. In painting, he uses one-fourth-inch Upson board instead of watercolor paper because it is thicker and dries faster. He prefers to draw the subject on tracing paper and transfer it to the Upson board panel after making some corrections. He believes that patience is an important aspect to his type of painting.

The second in a series of three articles dealing with the human resources aspects of mergers and acquisitions, with reference to a particular transaction in the international financial services sector - the purchase of most of the businesses of Royal Trustco by the Royal Bank of Canada. Describes the human resources challenges which emerged in a business which was not wanted by the acquiring organization and was therefore left out of the deal and wound down. Also describes key responses to these challenges: open communication of the business plan (including the manpower plan), innovative performance management and reward systems and unconventional approaches to redundancy planning. The idea behind the web site Portfolios.com is a good one: give creative professionals a place to show their work to potential buyers from all over the world. If one is a creative professional, the site takes one step-by-step through the process of posting five pieces of your portfolio online. As an e-commerce site, Puretracks.com gets a lot of things right. Finding one's music is quick and easy, thanks to an intuitive user interface, and site architecture that has a nice flow to it. One can choose from a ton of music, all of which one can try before buying. With links to over 6,000 sites related to Canadian culture, Culture.ca has a ton of content, lots and lots of info and links, and most of it is quite good. But there are problems with the site's navigation and its look.
