For the first time, the use of natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) as reaction media to carry out hetero-Diels–Alder reactions is disclosed. This allowed to improve the efficiency and sustainability of the synthetic approach to bis(indolyl)methanes (BIMs) based on bis-hetero-Diels–Alder/conjugate addition reactions of nitroso- and azoalkenes with indoles. The ternary mixture of H2O with choline chloride/glycerol allowed the tuning of the physical properties of this NADES leading to a better solvent system, affording the target hydroxyiminomethyl- and hydrazonomethyl-BIMs, in much shorter reaction times, higher efficiency and easier isolation procedures. Furthermore, the direct access to carbonyl-BIMs was possible when 3-methyl-1-tert-butoxycarbonyl azoalkenes were used. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Botanical origin, physicochemical properties (ash, colour, diastase activity, electrical conductivity (EC), hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), moisture, optical rotation (OP), pH, reducing sugars, total acidity, total soluble solids, and water activity), bioactive compounds (BC), and antioxidant activity obtained from strawberry tree honey from South Portugal were investigated. Results showed that the pollen analysis and physicochemical parameters were found within to meet international honey specifications. Significant differences (P<0.05) in results of ash content, EC, HMF, OP and colour when were compared with analogous famous Italian honey (Sardinia island). For BC, total phenolic and total flavonoid content were 94.47 mg gallic acid/100 g and 5.33 mg quercetin/100 g, respectively. Concerning Portuguese honey, it was also found that radical scavenging activity (DPPH assay) was 43.46% and antioxidant activity was 18.85 mg ascorbic acid equivalent/100 g and 9.92 mg quercetin equivalent/100 g. These results confirmed that Portuguese strawberry tree honey has the highest antioxidant activity, when compared with other kinds of honey. A number of new porphyrin-based photosensitizers have been developed for Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) in recent years. Chlorins, which are a reduced form of porphyrins, show better potential of application since they have a stronger absorption band on the red region of the visible spectrum and, hence, a deeper penetration into tissues. We found that by using heterogeneous catalytic transfer reduction (CTR), meso-tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) could be hydrogenated, although in modest yields, to meso-tetraphenylchlorin (TPC) in a single reaction step. Best reaction conditions were attained using formic acid or sodium phosphinate/water as hydrogen donors, tetrahydrofuran (THF) or toluene as solvent and 10% palladium on charcoal as catalyst.
