The selection and prioritization of suitable strategies to address the challenges to the successful operation and implementation of the bus rapid transit (BRT) system is a common problem faced by practitioners and decision-makers. Recent research has widely discussed the issue, but such assessments have remained limited in the city of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania context, where there are mobility difficulties. The present study addresses this research gap and identifies the most critical challenges to BRT implementation and operation, and recommends the most appropriate strategy for overcoming them. Seven strategies are defined. To prioritize these strategies, five criteria are determined. An integrated multi-criteria decision-making model is introduced. Improved Fuzzy Step-Wise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis based on the Bonferroni operator was used to determine the importance of the criteria. Measurement of alternatives and ranking according to compromise solution was applied to assess and rank the strategies. The results indicate that "frequent flooding at the Jangwani bridge bus terminal" and "long waiting time at bus stops" are the most critical challenges while the fourth alternative "strengthening the operation and management" is the appropriate strategy to be implemented for successful operation and implementation of the BRT system. After that, a five-phase sensitivity analysis is performed to observe the robustness of the proposed approach. The results indicate the flexibility and applicability of the proposed approach can address real-life problems. Natural herbal remedies have always been important in the management of skin disorders and the treatment of skin infections due to limited access to pharmaceuticals and the affordable cost of herbal products. K. Pinnata is a plant used as a medicinal herb by almost all traditional medicines in tropical Africa. The aim of the present work is to evaluate the antioxidant and healing properties of K. pinnata (Lam) pers extract from Togolese flora. The hydroethanol extract of K. pinnata (Lam) pers was subjected to in vitro antioxidant activity screening models, such as molybdate reduction, iron reduction assay (FRAP) and DPPH radical scavenging assay. A 1.5 cm diameter excision wound model was also used to assess the plant's healing activity. Wistar rats were treated after excision by topical application of vaseline, vaseline supplemented with 3% (EHKP 3%) and 10% (EHKP 10%) hydroethanol extract of K. pinnata (Lam) pers leaves, sulfadiazine (reference), or no treatment (negative control). Total antioxidant activity by the molybdate reduction method was 0.12 ± 0.01 µg EAA/mg EL, while the iron reduction assay (FRAP) showed an antioxidant capacity of 4.21 ± 0.04 mol Eq FeS04/ g extract and 10.17 ± 0.03 mol Eq FeS04/ g extract respectively for extract concentrations of 100 µg/ml and 200 µg/ml. In addition, the extract showed a dose-dependent ability to trap the DPPH radical. Results showed a significant reduction in wound surface area in animals treated with 10% EHKP. The hydroxyproline assay showed a significant difference in collagen production in animals treated with 10% EHKP, compared with the control group (P < 0.001) and the vaseline group (P < 0.01) on the last day. The sustainability of the mining sector over long term relies on a range of factors that must be carefully evaluated. To address this, Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) techniques have been utilized for their flexibility in offering supplementary tools. In this context, we assess the condition of the mining sector in Africa by examining key fundamental challenges it faces. Based on the literature review and opinions of experts, eleven challenges in the mining sector are identified. This study applies the FullEX approach to accommodate group decision-making process. Experts' Years of Experience (YE) and educational backgrounds are utilized to determine the importance of coefficients of criteria in the group decision-making process. The findings highlight mineral depletion resulting from over-exploitation, a scarcity of skilled labor, inconsistent power supply, inadequate infrastructure, and political problems as the most significant challenges confronting the mining sector. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis is conducted to evaluate the robustness of our approach. This paper identifies the dimensions of international trade in services that promote export product diversification in an unbalanced panel of 48 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) over the period 2005–2019. Using the two-step system Generalized Methtod of Moments (GMM), the results show that tourism, total services exports, export in transport services, travel services, insurances services, financial services, use of licenses services and other business services promote export product diversification in SSA. Policy makers can make commercial services export an important lever for export products diversification by adopting policies and strategies to develop and orient the commercial services towards more efficient and high value-added services. Practitioners and decision-makers often face difficulties in selecting and prioritizing effective strategies to address challenges to sustainable urban transportation development. Although there has been considerable research conducted on the subject, the Tanzanian context, which is greatly affected by social and environmental problems, has received inadequate attention. Therefore, this study intends to bridge this gap by pinpointing the obstacles to sustainable urban transportation and proposing the most appropriate strategies to tackle them. The study proposes seven strategies and determines five criteria to prioritize them. To accomplish this, the study proposes a novel Fermatean fuzzy-based intelligent decision support model to assess the criteria weights and prioritizes strategies based on the weighted criteria. The study validates the proposed methodology by conducting a sensitivity analysis, which indicates that restricting car use (A5), improving sector coordination (A1), and conducting extensive research on transportation issues (A7) are the top three strategies for promoting sustainable urban transportation. The study's findings hold significant value in providing urban transportation planners with helpful guidance to develop optimization techniques that can improve transportation systems. Context: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) due to fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) overexpression is becoming recognized in patients with malignancy. The condition may be underdiagnosed, with a scarce medical literature. Objective: To perform a meta-analysis of case reports to allow a better understanding of malignant TIO and its clinical implications. Methods: Full texts were selected according to strict inclusion criteria. All case reports were included where patients had hypophosphatemia, malignant TIO, and FGF23 blood levels. Thirty-two of 275 eligible studies (n = 34 patients) met inclusion criteria. A list of desired data was extracted and graded for methodological quality. Results: Prostate adenocarcinoma (n = 9) were the most tumors reported. Twenty-five of 34 patients had a metastatic disease and a poor clinical outcome was reported for 15 of 28 patients. The median levels of blood phosphate and C-terminal FGF23 (cFGF23) were 0.40 mmol/L and 788.5 RU/mL, respectively. For most of patients, blood PTH was elevated or within range, and calcitriol levels were inappropriately low or normal. Alkaline phosphatase concentrations were increased for 20 of 22 patients. The cFGF23 values were significantly higher for patients with a poor clinical outcome when compared to other patients (1685 vs 357.5 RU/mL). In case of prostate cancer, cFGF23 levels were significantly lower (429.4 RU/mL) than for other malignancies (1007.5 RU/mL). Conclusion: We report for the first time a detailed description of the clinical and biological characteristics of malignant TIO. The statistics pertaining to accidents occurring at construction sites underscore the pressing requirement for a substantial and timely reevaluation of safety measures within the construction sector. Accidents do not occur randomly; rather, they arise from the presence of unsafe actions, hazardous conditions, or a combination of both. The majority of accidents stem from a combination of contributing causes, including unsafe acts and conditions. To enhance safety performance on a broader scale, this study undertakes an extensive analysis to identify these causes, evaluate their importance, and determine the countries that are most and least impacted by them. Ten African countries were selected as potential alternatives based on the frequency of infrastructure construction projects. A thorough review of existing literature was conducted to establish a three-level criteria framework. The framework was further refined through the Modified Delphi method to gather expert opinions. The weights assigned to the criteria were determined using the interval-valued Fermatean fuzzy analytical hierarchy process methodology. The Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution method under the same fuzzy environment was then employed to rank the alternative countries. A sensitivity analysis was carried out to assess the robustness of the proposed methodology. The analysis revealed that the main cause of accidents was attributed to poor management, as it included ineffective project supervision, inadequate safety policies, poor organizational structure, and inappropriate scheduling/planning as the main underlying sub-factors. Background: Long-lasting insecticidal bed nets (LLINs) are a key measure for preventing malaria and their evaluation is coordinated by the World Health Organization Pesticide Evaluation Scheme (WHOPES). LifeNet® was granted WHOPES time-limited interim recommendation in 2011 after successful Phase I and Phase II evaluations. Here, we evaluated the durability and community acceptance of LifeNet® in a Phase III trial from June 2014 to June 2017 in Benin rural area. Methods: A prospective longitudinal, cluster-randomized, controlled trial with households as the unit of observation was designed to assess the performance of LifeNet® over a three-year period, using a WHOPES fully recommended LLIN (PermaNet® 2.0) as a positive control. The primary outcomes were the bioassay performance using WHO cone assays and tunnel tests, the insecticide content and physical integrity. Results: At baseline, 100% of LLINs were within the tolerance limits of their target deltamethrin concentrations. By 36 months only 17.3% of LifeNet® and 8.5% of PermaNet® LLINs still were within their target deltamethrin concentrations. Despite these low rates, 100% of both LLINs meet WHO efficacy criteria (≥ 80% mortality or ≥ 95% knockdown or tunnel test criteria of ≥ 80% mortality or ≥ 90% blood-feeding inhibition) after 36 months using WHO cone bio-assays and tunnel tests. The proportion of LLINs in good physical condition was 33% for LifeNet® and 29% for PermaNet® after 36 months. After 36 M the survivorship was 21% and 26% for LifeNet® and PermaNet® respectively. Although both LLINs were well accepted by the population, complaints of side effects were significantly higher among LifeNet® users than PermaNet® ones. Conclusion: LifeNet® LLINs did meet WHO criteria for bio-efficacy throughout the study period and were well accepted by the population. The East African Community, inspired by successful trading blocs, has already begun major transportation strategic plans that will necessarily require large investments. Additionally, significant efforts have been made to harmonize regional transportation legislation and regulations. However, some challenges that may arise in developing such a sustainable regional transportation infrastructure should be carefully determined. In this study, a spherical fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making method is proposed. Ten criteria characterizing the challenges in the regional transportation infrastructure problem have been identified as a result of the pertaining reviewed literature and expert opinions. These criteria were used to prioritize seven strategies for sustainable regional transportation infrastructure. To address complex group decision-making issues, this study presents the integration of Weighted Aggregated Sum Product Assessment (WASPAS) with Step-Wise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis (SWARA) in a spherical fuzzy (SF) environment. The weight and importance levels of criteria are evaluated using SF-SWARA. SF-WASPAS is then used to prioritize the strategies based on the SF-SWARA-weighted criteria. To assess the effectiveness of the proposed methodology, a sensitivity analysis is carried out, revealing that research and development (S7) and adequate institutional and regulatory framework (S4) are the most appropriate strategies for dealing with these challenges, respectively. The present study was carried out prior to investigations on infectivity of blood from asymptomatic carriers of Plasmodium falciparum to malaria vector mosquitoes. Methods: Human landing collections (HLCs) were performed in Adjrako village during the rainy season (September—November 2021). In this village, host-seeking mosquitoes were collected during three nights per survey from 22:00 to 06:00 in six randomly selected houses. Malaria vectors were dissected in orders to determinate their parity. Plasmodium falciparum infection in malaria vectors was determined by qPCR and the entomological inoculation rate (EIR) was calculated. The World Health Organization (WHO) insecticide susceptibility test-kits were used to evaluate the susceptibility of Anopheles gambiae sensu lato (s.l.) to deltamethrin at 0.05% and bendiocarb at 0.1%. Results: A total of 3260 females of mosquitoes belonging to 4 genera (Anopheles, Culex, Aedes and Mansonia) were collected. Most of the mosquitoes collected were An. gambiae sensu lato (s.l.). The entomological inoculation rate (EIR) for the three collection months was 8.7 infective bites per person and the parity rate was 84%. Mortality rates of An. gambiae s.l. exposed to 0.05% deltamethrin and 0.1% bendiocarb were 18% and 96%, respectively, indicating that this vector population was resistant to deltamethrin and possibly resistant to bendiocarb in the study area. Conclusion: This study showed that malaria transmission is effective in the study area and that An. gambiae s.l. is the main malaria vector. The orthophosphate BaNi2Fe(PO4)3 has been synthesized by a solid-state reaction route and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and energydispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The crystal structure comprises (100) sheets made up of [Ni2O10] dimers that are linked to two PO4 tetrahedra via common edges and vertices and of linear infinite [010] chains of corner-sharing [FeO6] octahedra and [PO4] tetrahedra. The linkage of the sheets and chains into a framework is accomplished through common vertices of PO4 tetrahedra and [FeO6] octahedra. Comparisons between RTIs mortality and research contributions From Figure 4, Seychelles has the lowest (7.07) RTI mortality rate per 100,000 people, followed by Mauritius (11.06), whiles Liberia has the highest (61.90). Road traffic injuries (RTIs) constitute a major cause of trauma and mortality globally (Chang et al., [6]). This study puts forward a call for urgent action to reduce RTIs in Africa by discussing a general overview of past studies and road traffic fatalities in Africa. Any deviation of speed in a traffic flow from a speed limit represents a potential risk of traffic accidents, so speed management appears as an imperative. However, an inadequately set speed limit often causes drivers' noncompliance to it in the conditions of real traffic flow. By determining the value of exceeding the speed limit according to vehicle classes, it is possible to recommend a credible speeding value that can be considered credible up to a value above the speed limit. In this paper, deterministic multistep mathematical models of speed deviation from the speed limit as a function of longitudinal gradient for the proposed vehicle classes were developed. A total of 11 measuring sections with different traffic flow types were analyzed. Based on a detailed analysis of speeding, models for the deviation of the 15th, 50th, and 85th percentiles were obtained, with the aim of adjusting the credible deviation to control measures. The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine associated with azithromycin on the QTc interval in Gabonese patients treated for COVID-19. Methods: This was an observational study conducted from April to June 2020, at the Libreville University Hospital Center in Gabon. Patients admitted for COVID-19 and treated with hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine, each combined with azithromycin were included. The QTc interval was measured upon admission and 48 h after starting treatment. The primary endpoint was QTc prolongation exceeding 60 ms and/or a QTc value exceeding 500 ms at 48 h. Results: Data from 224 patients, 102 (45.5%) who received hydroxychloroquine and 122 treated with chloroquine, were analyzed. The median baseline QTc was 396 (369–419) ms. After 48 h of treatment, 50 (22.3%) patients had a significant prolongation of QTc. This tended to be more frequent in patients treated with chloroquine (n = 33; 27.0%) than in those treated with hydroxychloroquine (n = 17; 16.7%) (p = 0.06). QTc prolongation exceeding 60 ms was found in 48 (21.3%) patients, while 11 patients had a (4.9%) QTc exceeding 60 ms at admission and exceeding 500 ms after 48 h. Single crystals of β-KCoFe(PO4)2, potassium cobalt(II) iron(III) bis(orthophosphate), were grown from the melt under atmospheric conditions. This phosphate crystallizes isotypically with KZnFe(PO4)2 in space group C2/c, adopting a zeolite-ABW type of structure. The structure of the present phosphate is distinguished by an occupational disorder of the two transitionmetal sites with ratios Fe:Co of 0.5725:0.4275 for the first and 0.4275:0.5725 for the second site. In the crystal structure, PO4 and (Co,Fe)O4 tetrahedra are linked through vertices to form elliptical rings with the sequence DDDDUUUU of up (U) and down (D) pointing vertices. Each eight-membered ring is surrounded by four other rings of the same type, delimiting interstices with rectangular shape. This arrangement leads to the formation of [(Co/Fe)(PO4)]-∞ sheets parallel to (001). Stacking of the sheets into a threedimensional framework results in the formation of two types of channels. The first one is occupied by potassium cations, whereas the second one remains vacant. Calculations of bond-valence sums and charge distribution were used to confirm the structure model. Technological innovations from the last few years, in the combination with city logistics (CL) initiatives, make the definition of novel, complex, sustainable CL solutions possible. Unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) as a technology attracted lots of attention in the literature. Various researches focused on different drone-based delivery approaches, but there are only a few articles dealing with drones as the elements of complex CL concepts. The goal of this paper is to evaluate different drone-based CL concepts. Based on the existing ideas of drone application in delivery, the main group of CL concepts and their variants are defined, which represents the main contribution of the article. The evaluation and ranking of concepts are performed from the aspect of all CL stakeholders and the defined set of criteria by applying measurement of alternatives and ranking according to compromise solution (MARCOS) multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) method in spherical fuzzy environment, which represents another contribution of the article. The results indicate that the potentially best CL concept, with the final score of 0.408, is the one that refers to the transformation of the logistics system into a two-echelon system with the implementation of micro-consolidation centers (MCCs), in which the delivery of goods to MCCs is realized with rail transportation mode and the last delivery phase with drones. It is followed by the concepts that imply MCCs, and rail transportation in the function of mobile depots for drone launching and MCCs and ground delivery vehicles (GDVs), with the final scores of 0.395 and 0.390, respectively. Objective: In the framework of EVALMOUS study aiming to assess the use and effectiveness of mosquito nets by pregnant women and other members of their household in a lagoon area in southern Benin, the behaviour of pregnant women relative to the time they go to bed using the net were recorded. Malaria vectors biting rhythm, Plasmodium falciparum infection and insecticide resistance genes in malaria vectors were also determined. Results: Overall, 3848 females of Anopheles gambiae s. l were collected and 280 pregnant women responded to the survey. Almost all Anopheles gambiae s. l. tested were Anopheles coluzzi Coetzee and Wilkerson 2013 (Diptera: Culicidae). The CSP index in malaria vector was 1.85% and the allelic frequency of kdr gene was 74.4%. Around 90% of bites and Plasmodium falciparum Welch, 1897 (Haemosporida: Plasmodiidae) transmission occurred between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., which coincides with the period when more than 80% of pregnant women were under bednet. Despite a slight early evening and early morning biting activity of malaria vectors in the study area, the good use of nets might remain a useful protection tool against mosquito biting and malaria transmission. Gram-negative bacilli can spread from the environment and through food products. This study aimed to characterize ESBL production and virulence genes from multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacilli isolated from specimen collected from the environment, kitchen, and food products. A total of 130 samples were collected at local markets in seven different communities in Benin (Abomey-Calavi, Ouidah, Bohicon, Abomey, Parakou, Djougou, and Grand-Popo). Samples were cultured on McConkey and ChromID™ ESBL agar plates. The isolates were identified by the API 20E gallery. An antibiotic susceptibility test was carried out, and the detection of ESBL production and virulence-associated genes was carried out by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). The data collected was coded and analyzed using GraphPad prism 7 software and Excel. The software R was used to calculate the correlation coefficient between the results of the detection of ESBL+ on agar and by the effect of the double synergy. The results showed that sixty-three (63) bacterial strains were isolated from the 130 samples, of which the dominant species was Chryseomonas luteola (10/63). The kitchen samples were the most contaminated with 36.50%. More than 40% of the isolates were resistant to at least three different classes of antibiotics. Also, blaSHV gene was detected in 33.33% (21/63) of the isolates and in all isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (5/5%). 11.11% (7/63) of isolates were virulent with dominance of the fimH gene, especially with Escherichia coli (83.33%). The kitchen samples showed a high prevalence of ESBL-producing strains with fimH gene. This raises the problem of non-compliance with hygiene rules in community cooking and food handling. This study analyzes the impact of climate variability on cotton cultivation in the department of Alibori, the first cotton producing department in Benin. This analysis is based on climatological data (rainfall, rainfall index, maximum temperature and duration of isolation) for the period from 1974 to 2014 and statistics of production and yield of cotton production over the same period. Inspired by Nerlove's approach, this study uses the cointegration approach with the structural break-up of Gregory and Hansen (1996). The results show that the department's rainfall is favorable for cotton production, while the rainfall deficits cause the decline in cotton production. Moreover, in the long term, the maximum temperature and duration of insolation have a negative effect, causing a sharp decrease in the production of cotton, while their effects are positive in the short term. In view of the crucial role, railways have played historically inland transportation, the West African region still endure to provide an efficient transport system. While road transport has been almost the exclusive predominant transportation mode in the region, the railway is now showing a global comeback. In the absence of a new phase of modernization at the international standard, it is unavoidable that the high demand for mobility of its increasing population and the full exploitation of its natural resource endowment will be constrained. This study presents the past, present, and future developments of the railway sector. The first section includes the brief historical development of the railways, the determinants choices of their location, and the influential parameters for their construction. The second section deals with the present state of the railway infrastructure, operational performance, and railway sector institutions. Background: Substantial evidence indicates that cytophilic IgG responses to Plasmodium falciparum merozoite antigens play a role in protection from malaria. The specific targets mediating immunity remain unclear. Evaluating antibody responses in infants naturally-exposed to malaria will allow to better understand the establishment of anti-malarial immunity and to contribute to a vaccine development by identifying the most appropriate merozoite candidate antigens. Methods: The study was based on parasitological and clinical active follow-up of infants from birth to 18 months of age conducted in the Tori Bossito area of southern Benin. For 399 infants, plasma levels of cytophilic IgG antibodies with specificity for five asexual stage malaria vaccine candidate antigens were determined by ELISA in infants' peripheral blood at 6, 9, 12 and 15 months of age. Multivariate mixed logistic model was used to investigate the association between antibody levels and anti-malarial protection in the trimester following the IgG quantification. Moreover, the concentrations of merozoite antigen-specific IgG were compared between a group of infants apparently able to control asymptomatic malaria infection (CAIG) and a group of infants with no control of malaria infection (Control group (NCIG)). Protective effect of antibodies was also assessed after 15 months of malaria exposure with a Cox regression model adjusted on environmental risk. Results: Cytophilic IgG responses to AMA1, MSP1, MSP2-3D7, MSP2-FC27, MSP3 and GLURP R2 were associated with increasing malarial infection risk in univariate analysis. The multivariate mixed model showed that IgG1 and IgG3 to AMA1 were associated with an increased risk of malarial infection. However infants from CAIG (n = 53) had significantly higher AMA1-, MSP2-FC27-, MSP3-specific IgG1 and AMA1-, MSP1-, MSP2-FC27-, MSP3 and GLURP-R2-specific IgG3 than those from NCIG (n = 183). The latter IgG responses were not associated with protection against clinical malaria in the whole cohort when protective effect is assessed after 15 months of malaria exposition. Conclusion: In this cohort, merozoite antigen-specific cytophilic IgG levels represent a marker of malaria exposure in infants from 6 to 18 months of age. However, infants with resolution of asymptomatic infection (CAIG) seem to have acquired naturally immunity against P. falciparum. Mathematical model was developed and simulated to predict the molar composition of biogas produced by anaerobic digestion. Several models have been developed for anaerobic processes with reduced number of parameters, but requiring data resolution, thus posing problem of data precision. The prediction model was based on reaction kinetics of anaerobic digestion, while Ratkowsky's formulation was used to examine the dependence of temperature on methanogenic process. The reaction kinetics model was simulated using SciLab coding of fourth order Runge Kutta numerical algorithm. Comparison of numerical experimentation results with published experimental data gave satisfactory agreement. The cumulative volume of methane was predicted in the temperature range of 20 - 40 °C, and the maximum volume of methane generated was 26.39 L at 35 °C for mesophilic bacteria. Reference evapotranspiration (ETr) is one of the important parameters in the hydrological cycle. The spatio-temporal variation of ETr and other meteorological parameters that influence ETr were investigated in the Jialing River Basin (JRB), China. The ETr was estimated using the CROPWAT 8.0 computer model based on the Penman–Montieth equation for the period 1964–2014. Mean temperature (MT), relative humidity (RH), sunshine duration (SD), and wind speed (WS) were the main input parameters of CROPWAT while 12 meteorological stations were evaluated. Linear regression and Mann–Kendall methods were applied to study the spatio-temporal trends while the inverse distance weighted (IDW) method was used to identify the spatial distribution of ETr. Stepwise regression and partial correlation methods were used to identify the meteorological variables that most significantly influenced the changes in ETr. The highest annual ETr was found in the northern part of the basin, whereas the lowest rate was recorded in the western part. In the autumn, the highest ETr was recorded in the southeast part of JRB. The annual ETr reflected neither significant increasing nor decreasing trends. Except for the summer, ETr is slightly increasing in other seasons. The MT significantly increased whereas SD and RH were significantly decreased during the 50-year period. Partial correlation and stepwise regression methods found that the impact of meteorological parameters on ETr varies on an annual and seasonal basis while SD, MT, and RH contributed to the changes of annual and seasonal ETr in the JRB. Introduction: Obesity is a growing concern in horses. The effects of maternal obesity on maternal metabolism and low-grade inflammation during pregnancy, as well as offspring growth, metabolism, low-grade inflammation, testicular maturation and osteochondrotic lesions until 18 months of age were investigated. Material and methods: Twenty-four mares were used and separated into two groups at insemination according to body condition score (BCS): Normal (N, n = 10, BCS ≤4) and Obese (O, n = 14, BCS ≥4.25). BCS and plasma glucose, insulin, triglyceride, urea, non-esterified fatty acid, serum amyloid A (SAA), leptin and adiponectin concentrations were monitored throughout gestation. At 300 days of gestation, a Frequently Sampled Intravenous Glucose Tolerance Test (FSIGT) was performed. After parturition, foals’ weight and size were monitored until 18 months of age with plasma SAA, leptin, adiponectin, triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4) and cortisol concentrations measured at regular intervals. At 6, 12 and 18 months of age, FSIGT and osteoarticular examinations were performed. Males were gelded at one year and expression of genes involved in testicular maturation analysed by RT-qPCR. Results: Throughout the experiment, maternal BCS was higher in O versus N mares. During gestation, plasma urea and adiponectin were decreased and SAA and leptin increased in O versus N mares. O mares were also more insulin resistant than N mares with a higher glucose effectiveness. Postnatally, there was no difference in offspring growth between groups. Nevertheless, plasma SAA concentrations were increased in O versus N foals until 6 months, with O foals being consistently more insulin resistant with a higher glucose effectiveness. At 12 months of age, O foals were significantly more affected by osteochondrosis than N foals. All other parameters were not different between groups. Conclusion: In conclusion, maternal obesity altered metabolism and increased low-grade inflammation in both dams and foals. In order to find the effect of different viscosity modifier dosages on asphalt binder's performance in bus rapid transit lanes in the city of Chengdu, three different viscosity modifiers were analyzed: TAFPACK-super (TPS), high-viscosity additive (HVA) and road-sciencetechnology (RST), and four different asphalt binders were investigated through laboratory experiments. The percentages of the viscosity modifiers used were: TPS (0%, 8%, 10%, 12%, 14% and 16%) and RST and HVA (8% and 12%) depending on the type of asphalt binder. Technical indicators of modifier asphalt were tested through conventional and unconventional binder tests. It has been found out that only a percentage greater than or equal to 14% TPS is reasonable to achieve the requirement set by 20,000 Pa s for the 60 °C dynamic viscosity on local #70 grade asphalt. The results indicate that conventional binders did not meet the requirements of the 60 °C dynamic viscosity when 12% of TPS or HVA modifiers are used. In addition, the (B-type) styrene-butadienne-styrene (SBS) modified asphalt binder has better viscosity balance than the (A-type) (SBS) modified when 8% of each of the three different kinds of viscosity modifiers is used. Therefore, the (B-type) modified SBS thus appears to be a suitable choice in asphalt mixtures for bus rapid transit lane with the 60 °C dynamic viscosity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The new silver-, cobalt- and iron-based phosphate, silver cobalt iron tris(orthophosphate), Ag1.655Co1.64Fe1.36(PO4)³, was synthesized by solid-state reactions. Its structure is isotypic to that of Na2Co2Fe(PO4)3, and belongs to the alluaudite family, with a partial cationic disorder, the AgI atoms being located on an inversion centre and twofold rotation axis sites (Wyckoff positions 4a and 4e), with partial occupancies of 0.885 (2) and 0.7688 (19), respectively. One of the two P atoms in the asymmetric unit completely fills one 4e site while the Co and Fe atoms fill another 4e site, with partial occupancies of 0.86 (5) and 0.14 (5), respectively. The remaining Co2+ and Fe3+ cations are distributed on a general position, 8f, in a 0.39 (4):0.61 (4) ratio. All O atoms and the other P atoms are in general positions. The structure is built up from zigzag chains of edge-sharing [MO6] (M = Fe/Co) octahedra stacked parallel to [101]. These chains are linked together through PO4 tetrahedra, forming polyhedral sheets perpendicular to [010]. Introduction: Pregnant mares and post-weaning foals are often fed concentrates rich in soluble carbohydrates, together with forage. Recent studies suggest that the use of concentrates is linked to alterations of metabolism and the development of osteochondrosis in foals. The aim of this study was to determine if broodmare diet during gestation affects metabolism, osteoarticular status and growth of yearlings overfed from 20 to 24 months of age and/or sexual maturity in prepubertal colts. Material and methods: Twenty-four saddlebred mares were fed forage only (n = 12, group F) or cracked barley and forage (n = 12, group B) from mid-gestation until foaling. Colts were gelded at 12 months of age. Between 20 and 24 months of age, all yearlings were overfed (+140% of requirements) using an automatic concentrate feeder. Offspring were monitored for growth between 6 and 24 months of age, glucose homeostasis was evaluated via modified frequently sampled intra veinous glucose tolerance test (FSIGT) at 19 and 24 months of age and osteoarticular status was investigated using radiographic examinations at 24 months of age. The structure and function of testicles from prepubertal colts were analyzed using stereology and RT-qPCR. Results: Post-weaning weight growth was not different between groups. Testicular maturation was delayed in F colts compared to B colts at 12 months of age. From 19 months of age, the cannon bone was wider in B vs F yearlings. F yearlings were more insulin resistant at 19 months compared to B yearlings but B yearlings were affected more severely by overnutrition with reduced insulin sensitivity. The osteoarticular status at 24 months of age was not different between groups. Conclusion: In conclusion, nutritional management of the pregnant broodmare and the growing foal may affect sexual maturity of colts and the metabolism of foals until 24 months of age. The title compound, SrCo2Fe(PO4)3, has been synthesized by a solid-state reaction. It crystallizes with the α-CrPO4 type structure. In this structure, all atoms are on special positions of the Imma space group, except for two O atoms which are located on general positions. The three-dimensional network in the crystal structure is made up of two types of layers stacked normal to (100). The first layer is built from two edge-sharing CoO6 octahedra, leading to the formation of Co2O10 dimers that are connected to two PO4 tetrahedra by a common edge and corners. The second layer results from apex-sharing FeO6 octahedra and PO4 tetrahedra, which form linear chains alternating with a zigzag chain of SrII cations. These layers are linked together by common vertices of PO4 tetrahedra and FeO6 octahedra to form an open three-dimensional framework that delimits two types of channels parallel to [100] and [010] where the SrII cations are located. Background: In Cameroon, insecticide resistance in Anopheles (An.) gambiae s.l. has been reported in several foci, prompting further investigations on associated patterns of Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) bio-efficacy. The current study, conducted from June to August 2011, explored the intensity of deltamethrin resistance in An. gambiae s.l. from Pitoa and its impact on the residual bio-efficacy of LifeNet, a LLIN with deltamethrin incorporated into polypropylene nets (PND). Methods: Two-four days old females An. gambiae s.l. reared from larval collections in Pitoa were tested for susceptibility to DDT, permethrin and deltamethrin, using standard World Health Organization (WHO) tube assays. Intensity of deltamethrin resistance was explored using WHO tube assays, but across six working concentrations from 0.001 % to 0.5 %. Bio-efficacy of unwashed and washed PND was assessed using WHO cone test. Species identification and kdr 1014 genotyping were performed on mosquito samples that were not exposed to insecticides, using PCR-RFLP and HOLA methods respectively. The Kisumu reference susceptible strain of An. gambiae s.s. was used for comparisons. Results: A total of 1895 An. gambiae s.l. specimens from Pitoa were used for resistance and PND bio-efficacy testing. This mosquito population was resistant to DDT, permethrin and deltamethrin, with 18-40 min knockdown times for 50 % of tested mosquitoes and 59-77 % mortality. Deltamethrin Resistance Ratio compared with the Kisumu strain was estimated at ≥500 fold. LifeNets were effective against the susceptible Kisumu (100 % knockdown (KD60min) and mortality) and the resistant Pitoa samples (95 % KD60min, 83-95 % mortality). However, the bio-efficacy gradually dropped against the Pitoa samples when nets were washed (X² = 35.887, df = 8, p < 0.001), and fell under the WHO efficacy threshold (80 % mortality and/or 95 % KD60min) between 10 and 15 washes. The Pitoa samples were composed of three sibling species: An. arabiensis (132/154, 86 %), An. coluzzii (19/154, 12 %) and An. gambiae s.s. (3/154, 2 %). The kdr L1014F allele was found only in An. coluzzii (Npositive = 13/19), at 34 % frequency and heterozygote stage. No specimen carried the kdr L1014S allele. Conclusions: The current study showed that LifeNet might still offer some protection against the resistant An. gambiae s.l. population from Pitoa, provided appropriate dose of insecticide is available on the nets. Soil erosion along with soil particles and nutrients losses is detrimental to crop production. We carried out a 5-year (2010 to 2014) study to characterize the soil erosion and nitrogen and phosphorus losses caused by rainfall under different fertilizer application levels in order to provide a theoretical evidence for the agricultural production and coordinate land management to improve ecological environment. The experiment took place under rotation cropping, winter wheat-summer maize, on a 15° slope purple soil in Chongqing (China) within the Three Gorges Region (TGR). Four treatments, control (CK) without fertilizer, combined manure with chemical fertilizer (T1), chemical fertilization (T2), and chemical fertilizer with increasing fertilization (T3), were designed on experimental runoff plots for a long-term observation aiming to study their effects on soil erosion and nutrients losses. The results showed that fertilization reduced surface runoff and nutrient losses as compared to CK. T1, T2, and T3, compared to CK, reduced runoff volume by 35.7, 29.6, and 16.8 %, respectively and sediment yield by 40.5, 20.9, and 49.6 %, respectively. Regression analysis results indicated that there were significant relationships between soil loss and runoff volume in all treatments. The combined manure with chemical fertilizer (T1) treatment highly reduced total nitrogen and total phosphorus losses by 41.2 and 33.33 %, respectively as compared with CK. Through this 5-year experiment, we can conclude that, on the sloping purple soil, the combined application of manure with fertilizer is beneficial for controlling runoff sediments losses and preventing soil erosion. Background: Resistance of malaria vectors to pyrethroids threatens the effectiveness of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) as a tool for malaria control. Recent experimental hut and observational studies in Benin show that pyrethroid resistance reduces the insecticidal effect and personal protection of LLINs especially when they become torn. The World Health Organization has proposed a threshold for when nets are "too torn" at 1,000 cm² for rectangular holes and 790 cm² for round holes. This study examines whether there is a threshold above which LLINs no longer reduce malaria transmission. Methods: Intact and artificially-holed LLINs under three months old and untreated nets were tested by releasing mosquitoes from a susceptible Anopheles gambiae colony, a pyrethroid-resistant An. gambiae population and a resistant Culex quinquefasciatus population in closed experimental huts in Southern Benin, West Africa. The efficacy of LLINs and untreated nets was evaluated in terms of protection against blood feeding, insecticidal effect and potential effect on malaria transmission. Results: Personal protection by both LLINs and untreated nets decreased exponentially with increasing holed surface area, without evidence for a specific threshold beyond which LLINs could be considered as ineffective. The insecticidal effect of LLINs was lower in resistant mosquitoes than in susceptible mosquitoes, but holed surface area had little or no impact on the insecticidal effect of LLINs. LLINs with 22,500 cm² holed surface area and target insecticide content provided a personal protection of 0.60 (95 % CI 0.44-0.73) and a low insecticidal effect of 0.20 (95 % CI 0.12-0.30) against resistant An. gambiae. Nevertheless, mathematical models suggested that if 80 % of the population uses such nets, they could still prevent 94 % (95 % CI 89-97 %) of transmission by pyrethroid-resistant An. gambiae. Conclusions: Even though personal protection by LLINs against feeding mosquitoes is strongly reduced by holes, the insecticidal effect of LLINs is independent of the holed surface area, but strongly dependent on insecticide resistance. Badly torn nets that still contain insecticide have potential to reduce malaria transmission. Due to the rapid extension of pyrethroid resistance in malaria vectors worldwide, manufacturers are developing new vector control tools including insecticide mixtures containing at least two active ingredients with different mode of action as part of insecticide resistance management. Olyset® Plus is a new long-lasting insecticidal net (LLIN) incorporating permethrin and a synergist, piperonyl butoxide (PBO), into its fibres in order to counteract metabolic-based pyrethroid resistance of mosquitoes. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of Olyset® Plus both in laboratory and field against susceptible and multi-resistant malaria vectors and compared with Olyset Net, which is a permethrin incorporated into polyethylene net. In laboratory, Olyset® Plus performed better than Olyset® Net against susceptible Anopheles gambiae strain with a 2-day regeneration time owing to an improved permethrin bleeding rate with the new incorporation technology. It also performed better than Olyset® Net against multiple resistant populations of An. gambiae in experimental hut trials in West Africa. Moreover, the present study showed evidence for a benefit of incorporating a synergist, PBO, with a pyrethroid insecticide into mosquito netting. Introduction: Tonsillectomy is among commonest otorhinolaryngologic surgeries. Many methods have been used to control post surgical pain, but despite it, pain is still one of the problems related to this operation. Recently, due to the non invasiveness of low level lasers, this modality has attracted attention. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of low level laser irradiation at the end of surgery on reduction of pain after tonsillectomy in adults. Methods: In a clinical trial, 60 adult patients, candidates for tonsillectomy were randomly assigned to two groups, A and B, and both groups were anesthetized similarly by the same technique. At the end of surgery, in the case group, the tonsils' bed were irradiated by infrared laser with 980nm wavelength, 100Hz, 4J/cm2 from the infra mandibular angle. In the control group, the tonsils' bed had laser therapy with a turned off probe. Following laser treatment, the patients were reversed and extubated and consciousness achieved, pain and odynophagia were assessed at 2, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24h post surgery based on visual analog scale for pain (VAS) and analgesic consumption. Results: In the laser group frequency of patients with pain sensation in each evaluated hour was lower than in the control group. The amount of pain decrease and analgesic consumption reduction was significantly higher in patients who received laser (P=0.01). Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, use of low level lasers is effective in reducing tonsillectomy post surgical pain in adults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Recent use of lasers for porcelain surface treatment for adhesion of brackets to restorations has not only showed some promising results, but is also accompanied with less undesirable effects among other advantages. The purpose of this study is the comparative electron microscope evaluation of feldspathic porcelain surfaces under irradiation by Neodymium-Doped Yttrium Aluminium Garnet (Nd:YAG) with different powers (0.75, 1.5 and 2W) via the acid etching with hydrofluoric acid (HF) technique. Methods: The glazed porcelain samples were obtained by duplicating labial surfaces of maxillary central incisor teeth. The specimens were randomly treated by 4 different methods. Group I was etched with hydrofluoric acid 9.6%. Samples in group 2 to 4 were also irradiated by Nd:YAG laser with different powers: 0.75, 1.5 and 2W. Then the samples were prepared for evaluation by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results: Etching quality from a porosity point of view was similar for group2 and HF group. Laser with power of 0.75W has little potential to create mechanical porosity. Conclusion: In regard of the results of this study, it is possible to benefit from Nd:YAG laser with appropriate parameters for surface conditioning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The use of laser for cavity preparation or conditioning of dentin and enamel surfaces as an alternative for dental tissue acid-etch have increased in recent years. The aim of this in vitro study was to compare microleakage at enamel-composite and dentin- composite interfaces following Erbium-Doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet(Er:YAG) laser conditioning or acid-etching of enamel and dentin, hybridized with different bonding systems. Methods: Class V cavities were prepared on the lingual and buccal surfaces of 50 recently extracted intact human posterior teeth with occlusal margin in the enamel and gingival margin in the dentin. The cavities were randomly assigned to five groups: group 1:conditioned with laser (Energy= 1 2OmJ, Frequency= 10Hz, Pulse duration= 100~ts for Enamel and Energy=80mJ, Frequency=l0Hz, Pulse duration=l00~.js for Dentin) + Optibond FL, group2:conditioned with laser + etching with 35% phosphoric acid + Optibond FL, group3:conditioned with laser + Clearfil SE Bond, group 4 (control):acid etched with 35% phosphoric acid + Optibond FL, group 5 (control): Clearfil SE Bond. All cavities were restored using Point 4 composite resin. All samples were stored in distilled water at 37°c for 24 h, then were thermocycled for 500 cycles and immersed in 50% silver nitrate solution for 24 h. The teeth were sectioned bucco-lingually to evaluate the dye penetration. Kruskal-Wallis & Mann-Whitney tests were used for statistical analysis. Results: In occiusal margins, the least microleakage showed in groups 2, 4 and 5. The maximum microleakage was observed in group 3 (P=0.009). In gingival margins, the least microleakage was recorded in group2, while the most microleakage was found in group 5 (P=0.001). Differences between 5 study groups were statistically significant (P<0.05). The microleakage scores were higher at the gingival margins. Conclusion: The use of the Er:YAG laser for conditioning with different dentin adhesive systems influenced the marginal sealing of composite resin restorations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One of the basic purposes in dental treatment is providing a painless treatment for patients. This purpose may be achieved by the application of laser in dentistry. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is an internationally accepted title for biomodulation with low-level lasers which we use to achieve ideal therapeutic effects. Low-level laser therapy is a painless, reproducible, non-invasive, and without need of anesthesia treatment which is used to treat a variety of pain syndromes, injuries, wounds, fractures, neurological conditions and pathologies. Laser therapy works on the principle of inducing a biological response through energy transfer. The parameters that used in laser therapy determine the effective depth of penetration. We can mention anti-inflammatory effects, stimulation of wound healing, stimulation of immune system, increase of blood flow and activation of vasodilatation, increase of cellular metabolism and analgesic effects as advantages of the application of this type of laser. Introduction: Due to penetration of pathogenic bacteria into the periodontal tissues in moderate to severe periodontitis, the mechanical methods are not sufficient in these cases. Therefore, administration of local/systemic antibiotic is recommended following mechanical root debridement. However, side effects of antibiotics such as microbial resistance and patient allergy led to development of alternative methods. One of the suggested methods is the antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT). aPDT is a local non invasive treatment modality without the side effects caused by antibiotics. The aim of this study was to collect the clinical articles related to the application of aPDT in the treatment of chronic periodontitis. Method: In order to find related clinical articles, a search of PubMed, Google Scholar and Science Direct until 2012 was performed. Results: A total of 11 articles were found. In 7 of the 11 articles, the assessment of aPDT led to a significant improvement in the clinical attachment and probing depth. Tn 4 studies, there was no difference between the scaling & root planing (SRP) and adjunctive application of aPDT. aPDT in most cases resulted in less gingival bleeding compare to SRP alone. Furthermore, its application in multiple doses was more effective in comparison to a single dose treatment. Conclusion: It appears that aPDT is effective as an adjunctive therapy compared to conventional non_surgical treatment alone, and is recommended in multiple doses in order to achieve more appropriate results. Introduction: Dentin hypersensitivity is one of the most common complications that patients suffer from after periodontal therapies. So far many investigators have used different types of fluoride and laser for treatment of this complication. The aim of this stiidy was to evaluate the effects of 5% sodium fluoride varnish and (Neodymium-Doped Yttrium Aluminium Garnet) Nd:YAG laser and their combined application on dentin hypersensitivity treatment. Methods: The study is a prospective interventional clinical trial. We selected a group of 9 patients with a total of 60 hypersensitive teeth. Each patient had at least 4 hypersensitive teeth. These 4 teeth were randomly placed in 4 different groups. Group 1 didn't receive any treatment. Group2 was treated with 5% sodium fluoride varnish (A Durashield Company product). Group3 was irradiated with Nd: YAG laser (1w, 20Hz, 120s). Group4 was treated by 5% sodium fluoride varnish and Nd: YAG laser combined (same parameters as group3). The assessment of the patients' pain was done with cold air blast test (CAB) and visual analyzing scale (VAS) after stimulation using a probe and cold air. Patients' pain was assessed before and just after treatment, and also 2 hours, 1 week and 2 weeks after treatment. For the assessment of pulp vitality we used the electric pulp test (EPT) at each session. SPSS 11.5 was used to process the results obtained. For the CAB and VAS changes in different groups, two-way repeated-measures ANOVA as well as Post-Hoc-Tukey tests were used. For the comparison of the different treatment groups at each session, one-way ANOVA, Post-Hoc-Tukey and or Maim-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used. Results: VAS and CAB scores didn't show any significant difference between different groups before treatment. Analysis of results obtained with two-way ANOVA test for repeated measures showed significant statistical differences for CAB and VAS scores in all groups between before and after treatment except for CAB score in control group. In the comparison of the fluoride varnish group and laser group alone with fluoride varnish-laser combined group using VAS and CAB scores, we found a significant difference. But we didn't find any significant difference for the comparison between the varnish fluoride group and the laser group using the same score. Conclusion: The use of 5% sodium fluoride varnish and laser for treatment of dentin hypersensitivity is accompanied by a placebo effect. Although it appears that, if we omit the placebo effect, we had an improvement in all 3 treatment groups. In mammalian testes, aromatase irreversibly converts androgens (C19 steroid) into estrogens (C18) and is present in the endoplasmic reticulum of numerous tissues. In purified adult rat germ cells (pachytene spermatocytes and round spermatids) we have shown the presence of a functional aromatase (transcript, protein and biological activity) and the estrogen production is roughly identical to that of Leydig cells. In addition, transcripts of aromatase varied according to the germ cell type and the stages of seminiferous epithelium in an adult rat. In contrast with the androgen receptors mainly localized in somatic cells, estrogen receptors (ERs) are described in all testicular cells. Moreover, besides the presence of high affinity ERα and ERβ a rapid membrane effects have been recently reported and we demonstrated that GPR30 (a transmembrane intracellular estrogen receptor) was expressed in adult rat pachytene spermatocytes and in round spermatids. Thus estrogens through both GPR30 and genomic effects are able to activate the rapid signaling cascade, which in turn triggers an apoptotic mitochondrial pathway (via an increase in Bax expression) and a concomitant decrease of cyclin A1 and B1 gene levels as well as in controlling apoptosis and maturation/differentiation of round spermatids. Hence, the role of estrogen (either intracrine, paracrine or autocrine) in spermatogenesis (proliferation, apoptosis, survival and maturation) is now obvious taking into account the simultaneous presence of a biologically active aromatase and the widespread distribution of estrogen receptors especially during the spermiogenesis steps. The application of laser in dentistry is considered as a favorable technique for patients due to its many advantages compare to other current methods. One of the main goals in pediatric dentistry is to provide the treatment as comfortable as possible without any risks for the care. Laser is being used in different pediatric dental conditions including caries detection, caries removal and cavity preparation, soft tissue surgery and in low level laser therapy applications. The application of current common lasers in dentistry resulted in less stress and fear in patients during dental procedures, also leading to more conservative non-invasive methods for soft and hard tissues with minimal discomfort and bleeding. Background: The association between placental malaria (PM) and first peripheral parasitaemias in early infancy was assessed in Tori Bossito, a rural area of Benin with a careful attention on transmission factors at an individual level. Methodology: Statistical analysis was performed on 550 infants followed weekly from birth to 12 months. Malaria transmission was assessed by anopheles human landing catches every 6 weeks in 36 sampling houses and season defined by rainfall. Each child was located by GPS and assigned to the closest anopheles sampling house. Data were analysed by survival Cox models, stratified on the possession of insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs) at enrolment. Principal Findings: Among infants sleeping in a house with an ITN, PM was found to be highly associated to first malaria infections, after adjusting on season, number of anopheles, antenatal care (ANC) visits and maternal severe anaemia. Infants born from a malaria infected placenta had a 2.13 fold increased risk to present a first malaria infection than those born from a non infected placenta ([1.24-3.67], p<0.01) when sleeping in a house with an ITN. The risk to present a first malaria infection was increased by 3.2 to 6.5, according to the level of anopheles exposure (moderate or high levels, compared to the absence of anopheles). Conclusions: First malaria infections in early childhood can be attributed simultaneously to both PM and high levels of exposure to infected anopheles. Protective measures as Intermittent Preventive Treatment during pregnancy (IPTp) and ITNs, targeted on both mothers and infants should be reinforced, as well as the research on new drugs and insecticides. In parallel, investigations on placental malaria have to be strengthened to better understand the mechanisms involved, and thus to protect adequately the infants high risk group.
