Pollinators benefit from increasing floral resources in agricultural landscapes, which could be an underexplored co‐benefit of mass‐flowering crop cultivation. However, the impacts of mass‐flowering crops on pollinator communities are complex and appear to be context‐dependent, mediated by factors such as crop flowering time and the availability of other flower resources in the landscape. A synthesis of research is needed to develop management recommendations for effective pollinator conservation in agroecosystems.By combining 22 datasets from 13 publications conducted in nine temperate countries (20 European, 2 North American), we investigated if mass‐flowering crop flowering time (early or late season), bloom state (during or after crop flowering) and extent of non‐crop habitat cover in the landscape moderated the effect of mass‐flowering crop cover on wild pollinator abundance and species richness in mass‐flowering crop and non‐crop habitats.During bloom, wild bee abundance and richness are negatively related to mass‐flowering crop cover. Dilution effects were predominant in crop habitats and early in the season, except for bumblebees, which declined with mass‐flowering crop cover irrespective of habitat or season. Late in the season and in non‐crop habitats, several of these negative relationships were either absent or reversed. Late‐season mass‐flowering crop cover is positively related to honeybee abundance in crop habitats and to other bee abundance in non‐crop habitats. These results indicate that crop‐adapted species, like honeybees, move to forage and concentrate on late‐season mass‐flowering crops at a time when flower availability in the landscape is limited, potentially alleviating competition for flower resources in non‐crop habitats. We found no evidence of pollinators moving from mass‐flowering crop to non‐crop habitats after crop bloom.Synthesis and applications: Our results confirm that increasing early‐season mass‐flowering crop cover dilutes wild pollinators in crop habitats during bloom. We find that dilution effects were absent late in the season. While mass‐flowering crop cultivation alone is unlikely to be sufficient for maintaining pollinators, as part of carefully designed diverse crop rotations or mixtures combined with the preservation of permanent non‐crop habitats, it might provide valuable supplementary food resources for pollinators in temperate agroecosystems, particularly later in the season when alternative flower resources are scarce. We develop and characterize a wide angle static and dynamic light scattering under shear setup. The apparatus is suitable for the study of the structure and the dynamics of soft materials systems with a sub-micron characteristic length scale. The shear device consists in two parallel plates, and the optical setup allows us to perform light scattering measurements in any plane that contains the gradient of the velocity field direction. We demonstrate several capabilities of our apparatus: a measurement of the evolution with shear of the first peak of the structure factor of a concentrated suspension of spherical particles, both in the compression and extension quadrants of the shear flow, and the measurement of the velocity profile in dynamic light scattering. We present a theoretical treatment of light scattering under flow that takes into account the Gaussian character of the illumination and detection optical paths, in the case where the scattering volume extension is smaller than the gap of the flow cell, and compare with experimental measurements. This observer-blinded, randomized controlled trial compared the short- and long-term effects of 4 months of supervised strength training ( ST) in a local fitness center, supervised Nordic Walking ( NW) in a local park, and unsupervised home-based exercise ( HBE, control) on functional performance in 60+-year-old persons ( n = 152) with hip osteoarthritis ( OA) not awaiting hip replacement. Functional performance [i.e., 30-s chair stand test (primary outcome), timed stair climbing, and 6-min walk test] and self-reported outcomes (i.e., physical function, pain, physical activity level, self-efficacy, and health-related quality of life) were measured at baseline and at 2, 4, and 12 months. Based on intention-to-treat-analyses improvements [mean (95% CI)] after intervention in number of chair stands were equal in all three groups at 4 months [ ST: 0.9 (0.2-1.6), NW: 1.9 (0.8-3.0), HBE: 1.1 (0.1-2.0)] but greater in the NW group [1.4 (0.02-2.8)] than in the ST group at 12 months. Generally, improvements in functional performance were greater ( P < 0.001- P < 0.03) after NW compared with HBE and ST at all follow-up time points. Furthermore, NW was superior ( P < 0.01) to HBE for improving vigorous physical activity and to both ST and HBE for improving ( P < 0.01) mental health. Introduction: Multidisciplinary rehabilitation has beneficial effects on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with chronic rheumatic diseases. However, whether this intervention benefits different age groups in women or men is largely unknown.Purpose: To investigate HRQoL in patients with chronic rheumatic disease after completion of a 3-week multidisciplinary treatment, with special focus on differences in effect between age and gender groups.Method: HRQoL was measured with SF-36. Mean scores for all SF-36 domains were compared before and after the 3-week regimen and again at 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-ups. Multivariable linear regression models using generalized estimating equations to account for repeated measurement were employed. A weighting procedure to account for differential dropouts was applied.Results: Three hundred fifty-six women and 74 men with chronic rheumatic disease were included. There were short-term improvements in all SF-36 domains irrespective of age or gender. These effects persisted for up to 1 year in the psychological, social, and energy domains for women under 50. We found no lasting effects for men; however, young men showed similar trends.Conclusion: Inpatient multidisciplinary rehabilitation improves short-term HRQoL in all patients. Younger women maintain these beneficial effects for up to 1 year. Additional intervention should be considered for elderly women and for men in order to sustain rehabilitation effects. Background: Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) spend a high proportion of their waking time in sedentary behaviour (SB) and have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Reduction of SB and increase in light intensity physical activity has been suggested as a means of improvement of health in patients with mobility problems. Short-term intervention studies have demonstrated that SB can be reduced by behavioural interventions in sedentary populations. To evaluate descriptively the feasibility of recruitment, randomisation, outcome assessments, retention and the acceptability of an individually tailored, theory-based behavioural intervention targeting reduction in daily sitting time in patients with RA. Methods: A randomised, controlled trial with two parallel groups. RA patients >18 years of age and Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) score < 2.5 were consecutively invited and screened for daily leisure time sitting > 4 h. The 16-week intervention included 1) three individual motivational counselling sessions and 2) individual text message reminders aimed at reducing daily sitting time. The control group was encouraged to maintain their usual lifestyles. Outcomes were assessed at baseline and after the 16 week intervention. Daily sitting time was measured using an ActivPAL3TM activity monitor. The study was not powered to show superiority; rather the objective was to focus on acceptability among patients and clinical health professionals. Results: In total, 107 patients were invited and screened before 20 met eligibility criteria and consented; reasons for declining study participation were mostly flares, lack of time and co-morbidities. One patient from the control group dropped out before end of intervention (due to a RA flare). Intervention participants completed all counselling sessions. All procedures regarding implementation of the trial protocol were feasible. The daily sitting time was reduced on average by 0.30 h in the intervention group unlike the control group that tended to increase it by 0.15 h after 16 weeks. Conclusions: This study shows that an individually tailored behavioural intervention targeting reduction of SB was feasible and acceptable to patients with RA. BACKGROUND: Inactivity during hospitalization in older medical patients may lead to functional decline. This study quantified 24-hour mobility, validated the accelerometers used, and assessed the daily level of basic mobility in acutely admitted older medical patients during their hospitalization. METHODS: This is a prospective cohort study in older medical patients able to walk independently (ambulatory patients) and those not able to walk independently (nonambulatory patients) on admission. The 24-hour mobility level during hospitalization was assessed by measuring the time in lying, sitting, and standing and/or walking, by two accelerometers. Basic mobility was quantified within 48 hours of admission and repeated daily throughout hospitalization. RESULTS: Forty-three ambulatory patients and six nonambulatory patients were included. The ambulatory patients tended to be hospitalized for fewer days than the nonambulatory patients (7 vs 16, p = .13). The ambulatory patients were lying median 17 hours, (interquartile range [IQR]: 14.4-19.1), sitting 5.1 hours (IQR: 2.9-7.1), and standing and/or walking 1.1 hours (IQR: 0.6-1.7) per day. On days with independency in basic mobility, the ambulatory patients were lying 4.1 hours less compared with days with dependency in basic mobility (p < .0001), sitting 2.4 hours more (p = .0004), and standing 0.9 hours more (p < .0001). The algorithm identification for lying, sitting, and standing and/or walking of the accelerometers, corresponded by 89%-100% with positions performed by older medical patients. CONCLUSIONS: Older acutely hospitalized medical patients with walking ability spent 17h/d of their in-hospital time in bed, and the level of in-hospital mobility seemed to depend on the patients' level of basic mobility. We have investigated magnetic properties of a novel macrocyclic chelate Ni(II) complex [Ni3(L)(OAc)2], by means of the static magnetization M and high field frequency tunable electron spin resonance (HF-ESR). Magnetic field B dependencies of M reveal the magnetic ground state with a total spin S $^{\mathit{tot}}_{0}=1$ and a strong antiferromagnetic coupling between three Ni(II) ions. HF-ESR measurements at frequencies ν=80–350 GHz and B up to 15 T yield a magnetic anisotropy gap of the order of 60 GHz (2.9 K) and a g-factor of 2.2. In addition, the modelling reveals a positive single ion anisotropy ( D>0) corresponding to an easy plane situation for the Ni3 complex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Frail, old patients with and without cognitive impairment are at high risk of falls and associated medical and psychosocial issues. The lack of adequate, validated instruments has partly hindered research in this field. So far no questionnaire documenting fall-related self-efficacy/fear of falling has been validated for older persons with cognitive impairment or for different administration methods such as self-report or interview. Objective: To validate the self-report and interview version of the Falls Efficacy Scale (FES) and the Falls Efficacy Scale International Version (FES-I) in frail geriatric patients with and without cognitive impairment. Methods: 156 geriatric patients in geriatric rehabilitations wards with (n = 75) and without cognitive impairment (n = 81) were included in this study. Reports of fall-related self-efficacy were based on self-reported and interview-based questionnaires. Descriptive statistics, reliability estimates and validation results were computed for the total group and sub-samples with respect to cognitive status, for the 2 different questionnaires (FES/FES-I) and for the 2 administration methods. Test-retest reliability was tested in a subsample of 62 patients. Results: Internal reliability and test-retest reliability were good to excellent in both the FES and FES-I, with the FES-I showing better internal reliability and the FES better test-retest reliability with respect to cognitively impaired persons. The group of cognitively impaired persons tended to show lower test-retest reliability and mean fall-related self-efficacy and had significantly lower completion rates in self-administered questionnaires. As indicated by significant differences in parameters closely related to falls, such as vertigo, functional performances, fear of falling and history of falls, both the FES and the FES-I showed good construct validity. Effect sizes computed for the above-mentioned groups for fall-related parameters confirmed the results of construct validation. Conclusion: Both the FES as well as the FES-I showed good to excellent measurement properties in persons with and without moderate cognitive impairment. The knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS), based on the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), is widely used to evaluate subjective outcome in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructed patients. However, the validity of KOOS has not been assessed using Rasch analysis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the viability of KOOS as an outcome measure for ACL reconstruction using the partial credit Rasch model. Rasch analysis was applied to 200 KOOS questionnaires completed by patients consecutively tested 20 weeks after ACL reconstruction and subsequent rehabilitation. Rasch analysis showed that of the five proposed subscales in KOOS, only knee-related quality of life (QoL) and sport and recreational related function (Sport/Rec) fulfilled the criteria of a unidimensional measurement scale when applied to these patients. The three subdomains in KOOS extracted from WOMAC did not fulfill these criteria. While the content of KOOS appears to be relevant for knee patients, the psychometric measurement properties of KOOS are insufficient for use on patients 20 weeks subsequent to ACL reconstruction. A new knee measure targeted for these patients could be developed based on the content of KOOS. Objective. Proteasome autoantibodies (PAB) have been found in multiple sclerosis (MS) patient sera and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Presence of PAB could thus be a possible diagnostic marker for MS. We investigated whether PAB serum status in acute monosymptomatic optic neuritis (ON) and MS differed significantly from that of healthy controls, and whether or not PAB status is predictive of later MS development in patients with ON. Material and methods. Sera from ON patients, MS patients and healthy donors were analysed retrospectively using ELISA. Subsequently, a small group of PAB-positive samples were subjected to SDS-PAGE, immunoblotting and 2-D PAGE. Results. We found that 20 % (6/30) ON patients, 47 % (22/47) MS patients and 9 % (7/81) controls tested PAB positive using ELISA analysis. High PAB levels were found in 2 (4 %) MS patients, 1 (3 %) ON patient and 2 (3 %) controls. PAB positivity in ELISA was confirmed by immunoblotting. Separation of proteasome subunits by 2D PAGE followed by immunoblotting revealed no particular PAB subunit preference. Conclusions. A retrospective search in available patient files revealed that 6 of 6 (100.0 %) PAB-positive ON patients developed MS over time. Eight of 24 (33 %) PAB-negative ON patients developed MS over time and 47 % (14/30) of all ON patients developed MS. A series of patient CSF was analysed by ELISA to assess the possible correlation between PAB status of concurrent serum and CSF samples, but no correlation was found. Immobilization due to hospitalization and major surgery leads to an increased risk of morbidity, disability and a decline in muscle function especially in frail elderly individuals. In fact, many elderly patients fail to regain their level of function and self-care before admission to hospital. Given that reduced lower limb muscle strength and loss of skeletal muscle mass (i.e. sarcopenia) have been associated with functional impairments and disability with aging, attempts to counteract this process seem highly relevant. In recent years, strength training has emerged as an effective method to induce muscle hypertrophy and increase muscle strength and functional performance in frail elderly individuals. Furthermore, there is increasing evidence that strength training is an effective method to restore muscle function in post-operative patients and in patients with chronic diseases. Despite this, strength training is rarely used in the rehabilitation of hospitalized elderly patients. The current knowledge on this topic will be the focus of this review. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PURPOSE: To carry out a cross-cultural validation of the Falls Efficacy Scale International (FES-I), a 16-item modified version of the Falls Efficacy Scale that was developed to assess both easy and more complex physical and social activities, in a range of languages and different cultural contexts. METHOD: Data were collected in Germany (n = 94), The Netherlands (n = 193), and the UK (n = 178) in samples of older people living in the community. Four-week FES-I re-test data were collected in Germany and The Netherlands. Descriptive statistics and reliability estimates were computed as well as FES-I sum scores according to age, sex, falls history and fear of falling. RESULTS: Mean inter-item correlations were all above 0.38 and internal reliability estimates were all 0.90 or above. The intra-class correlation coefficients in the German and the Dutch sample were 0.79 and 0.82, respectively. As expected, FES-I scores were associated with age, sex, falls history and fear of falling. In addition, the FES-I discriminated between sub-groups somewhat better than the original ten-item FES scale. CONCLUSIONS: The FES-I has been shown to have acceptable reliability and construct validity in different samples in different countries and may be used in cross-cultural rehabilitation research and clinical trials. The chaperone calreticulin is a highly conserved eukaryotic protein mainly located in the endoplasmic reticulum. It contains a free cysteine SH group but does not form disulfide-bridged dimers under physiological conditions, indicating that the SH group may not be fully accessible in the native protein. Using PAGE, urea gradient gel electrophoresis, capillary electrophoresis and MS, we show that dimerization through the SH group can be induced by lowering the pH to 5–6, heating, or under conditions that favour partial unfolding such as urea concentrations above 2.6 m or SDS concentrations above 0.025%. Moreover, we show that calreticulin also has the ability to self-oligomerize through noncovalent interactions at urea concentrations above 2.6 m at pH below 4.6 or above pH 10, at temperatures above 40 °C, or in the presence of high concentrations of organic solvents (25%), conditions that favour partial unfolding or an intramolecular local conformational change that allows oligomerization, resulting in a heterogeneous mixture of oligomers consisting of up to 10 calreticulin monomers. The oligomeric calreticulin was very stable, but oligomerization was partially reversed by addition of 8 m urea or 1% SDS, and heat-induced oligomerization could be inhibited by 8 m urea or 1% SDS when present during heating. Comparison of the binding properties of monomeric and oligomeric calreticulin in solid-phase assays showed increased binding to peptides and denatured proteins when calreticulin was oligomerized. Thus, calreticulin shares the ability to self-oligomerize with other important chaperones such as GRP94 and HSP90, a property possibly associated with their chaperone activity. This review aims to provide the reader with up to date evidence in relation to the role of exercise in the reduction of risk factors and the prevention of falls and injuries. Falls and injury may lead to a spiral of inactivity and decline that take older people close to or below the critical "thresholds" of performance necessary for everyday activities. Yet, low strength and power, poor balance, poor gait and functional ability, and fear of falling are all risk factors for falls modifiable with tailored exercise. Although the evidence on types, amounts and specificity of exercise to prevent falls is not complete, recommendations have been published that have been effective, either as an exercise stand‐alone intervention or with exercise as part of a multifactorial intervention. It is clear that the target population must be at risk or already fallers, they must be "not too fit" and "not too frail". Supervised home‐based exercise programs may be effective in those aged over 80 because they fall more frequently, injure more easily, and recover more slowly. In younger, community‐dwelling, fallers multifactorial group interventions including targeting of balance, strength, power, gait, endurance, flexibility, co‐ordination and reaction may be more effective. There are, however, research questions that still need answering – whether there are certain types of exercise harmful in certain subgroups of older people, what is the ideal intensity, frequency and duration of exercise for different subgroups of older people (primary and secondary prevention) and the relative value of the different components of fitness to prevention of falls and injuries. The Achilles tendon cross-sectional area (CSA), tensile force, and stress during an isometric contraction were examined in healthy young (n = 9, age = 29 +/- 1 years, mean +/- SEM) and elderly (n = 10, 79 +/- 2 years) women. CSA area was obtained with magnetic resonance imaging 3 cm proximal to the insertion, and tendon force was obtained from the isometric ankle moment. The moment of force about the ankle joint was greater in young women (95 +/- 17 N m) than in elderly women (51 +/- 5 N m; p <.05). The Achilles tendon CSA was significantly greater in elderly women (56.3 +/- 3.0 mm(2)) than in young women (46.0 +/- 1.9 mm(2); p <.01). These data show that young women can exert a greater force than elderly women on the Achilles tendon during voluntary contraction, although elderly women have an increased (22%) tendon CSA, and a lower tendon force than young women. The greater tendon size combines to lower the stress on the tendon markedly, which may reduce the risk of injury to the tendon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Life-saving treatment of disease by organ transplantation has become increasingly important. Annually over 35000 transplantations of vital organs are carried out world-wide and the demand for knowledge regarding exercise in daily life for transplant recipients is growing. The present review describes whole-body and organ reactions to both acute exercise and regular physical training in persons who have undergone heart, lung, liver kidney, pancreas or bone marrow transplantation. In response to acute exercise, the majority of cardiovascular, hormonal and metabolic changes are maintained after transplantation. However, in heart transplant recipients organ denervation reduces the speed of heart rate increase in response to exercise. Furthermore, lack of sympathetic nerves to transplanted organs impairs the normal insulin and renin responses to exercise in pancreas and kidney transplant recipients, respectively. In contrast, surgical removal of sympathetic liver nerves does not inhibit hepatic glucose production during exercise, and denervation of the lungs does not impair the ability to increase ventilation during physical exertion. Most studies show that physical training results in an improved endurance and strength capacity in almost all groups of transplant recipients, which is of importance for their daily life. With a little precaution, organ transplant recipients can perform exercise and physical training and obtain effects comparable with those achieved in the healthy population of similar age. The aim of the present study was to describe the isokinetic strength profile and its relation to hiking performance in male (SM, n=15) and female (SF, n=6) elite sailors compared to a group of male control subjects (CM, n=8) similar in age, anthropometry and level of fitness. Eccentric knee extension strength was higher in SM compared to CM(P<0.01). Furthermore, SM were stronger during trunk extension (P<0.05), but not during trunk flexion compared to CM. Overall muscle strength was lower in SF compared to SM (P<0.01) and CM (P<0.05), except for eccentric knee extension strength, where SF and CM did not differ (P>0.05). Hiking performance correlated to maximal eccentric and isometric knee extensor strength in SF (r[subs=0.83-088, P<0.05) and in CM (r[subs]=0.73-0.77, P<0.05) and to maximal eccentric knee extensor strength at high velocity in SM (r[subs]=0.46-0.54, P<0.05). For a subgroup of hikers in SM (n=8), hiking performance correlated to maximal isometric-eccentric knee extensor strength (r[subs]=0.67-0.74, P<0.05), whereas no correlations emerged for the non-hikers (n=7). Few correlations were observed between hiking performance and maximal concentric trunk flexor strength (r[subs]=0.69-0.92, P<0.05). Unexpectedly, in SM correlations also were observed between hiking performance and maximal strength of the trunk extensors (r[subs]=0.460.53, hiker subgroup: r[subs]=0.64-0.67, P<0.05). In conclusion, notably high levels of maximal eccentric knee extensor strength were observed for the male and female elite sailors examined in the present study. Furthermore, the present results suggest that hiking performance depends in part on maximal isometric-eccentric knee extensor strength. The maximal strength of the trunk extensors, which potentially stabilizes the lower back and spine, also seems to have some importance for the hiking performance of top-level sailors.
