The gravitational pressure in many astrophysical objects exceeds one gigabar (one billion atmospheres)1–3, creating extreme conditions where the distance between nuclei approaches the size of the K shell. This close proximity modifies these tightly bound states and, above a certain pressure, drives them into a delocalized state4. Both processes substantially affect the equation of state and radiation transport and, therefore, the structure and evolution of these objects. Still, our understanding of this transition is far from satisfactory and experimental data are sparse. Here we report on experiments that create and diagnose matter at pressures exceeding three gigabars at the National Ignition Facility5 where 184 laser beams imploded a beryllium shell. Bright X-ray flashes enable precision radiography and X-ray Thomson scattering that reveal both the macroscopic conditions and the microscopic states. The data show clear signs of quantum-degenerate electrons in states reaching 30 times compression, and a temperature of around two million kelvins. At the most extreme conditions, we observe strongly reduced elastic scattering, which mainly originates from K-shell electrons. We attribute this reduction to the onset of delocalization of the remaining K-shell electron. With this interpretation, the ion charge inferred from the scattering data agrees well with ab initio simulations, but it is significantly higher than widely used analytical models predict6.Experiments at the National Ignition Facility show how delocalization of K-shell electrons is driven by extreme pressure and temperature. We describe an experimental concept at the National Ignition Facility for specifically tailored spherical implosions to compress hydrogen to extreme densities (up to ∼ 800 × solid density, electron number density n e ∼ 4 × 10 25 cm − 3 ) at moderate temperatures (T ∼ 200 eV), i.e., to conditions, which are relevant to the interiors of red dwarf stars. The dense plasma will be probed by laser-generated x-ray radiation of different photon energy to determine the plasma opacity due to collisional (free–free) absorption and Thomson scattering. The obtained results will benchmark radiation transport models, which in the case for free–free absorption show strong deviations at conditions relevant to red dwarfs. This very first experimental test of free–free opacity models at these extreme states will help to constrain where inside those celestial objects energy transport is dominated by radiation or convection. Moreover, our study will inform models for other important processes in dense plasmas, which are based on electron–ion collisions, e.g., stopping of swift ions or electron–ion temperature relaxation. X-ray Thomson scattering (XRTS) is a powerful diagnostic technique that involves an x-ray source interacting with a dense plasma sample, resulting in a spectrum of elastically and inelastically scattered x-rays. Depending on the plasma conditions, one can measure a range of parameters from the resulting spectrum, including plasma temperature, electron density, and ionization state. To achieve sensitivity to collective electron oscillations, XRTS measurements require limited momentum transfer where the spectral separation of elastic and inelastic scattering is small. Such measurements require an x-ray probe source with a narrow bandwidth in order to reduce the spectral overlap between scattering contributions, allowing for the different features to be more precisely deconvolved. In this investigation, we discuss the theory behind how the bandwidth for a common XRTS probe, Zn He-α emission at 9 keV, can be reduced using a Cu K-edge filter. Proof-of-principle experiments conducted at the OMEGA laser facility confirm that this is an effective method for attenuating the higher energy He-α peak in the Zn emission spectrum. Calibration measurements at the National Ignition Facility show a reduction in spectral bandwidth from 87 eV to 48 eV when using the Cu filter, which will be important to improve the spectral resolution of future XRTS measurements that will probe plasmon oscillations in strongly compressed plasmas of low-Z materials at densities of tens of g/cm3. Water, methane, and ammonia are commonly considered to be the key components of the interiors of Uranus and Neptune. Modelling the planets' internal structure, evolution, and dynamo heavily relies on the properties of the complex mixtures with uncertain exact composition in their deep interiors. Therefore, characterising icy mixtures with varying composition at planetary conditions of several hundred gigapascal and a few thousand Kelvin is crucial to improve our understanding of the ice giants. In this work, pure water, a water-ethanol mixture, and a water-ethanol-ammonia "synthetic planetary mixture" (SPM) have been compressed through laser-driven decaying shocks along their principal Hugoniot curves up to 270, 280, and 260 GPa, respectively. Measured temperatures spanned from 4000 to 25000 K, just above the coldest predicted adiabatic Uranus and Neptune profiles (3000–4000 K) but more similar to those predicted by more recent models including a thermal boundary layer (7000–14000 K). The experiments were performed at the GEKKO XII and LULI2000 laser facilities using standard optical diagnostics (Doppler velocimetry and optical pyrometry) to measure the thermodynamic state and the shock-front reflectivity at two different wavelengths. The results show that water and the mixtures undergo a similar compression path under single shock loading in agreement with Density Functional Theory Molecular Dynamics (DFT-MD) calculations using the Linear Mixing Approximation (LMA). On the contrary, their shock-front reflectivities behave differently by what concerns both the onset pressures and the saturation values, with possible impact on planetary dynamos.
