Massive accumulations of invasive brown algae Rugulopteryx okamurae are exacerbating environmental and socio-economic issues on the Mediterranean and potentially Atlantic coasts. These golden tides, likely intensified by global change processes such as changes in wind direction and intensity and rising temperatures, pose increasing challenges to coastal management. This study employs the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), with values above 0.08 from Level-2 Sentinel-2 imagery, to effectively monitor these strandings along the coastline of Los Lances beach (Tarifa, Spain) in the Strait of Gibraltar Natural Park from 2018 to 2022. Los Lances beach is one of the most affected by the R. okamurae bioinvasion in Spain. The analysis reveals that wind direction determines the spatial distribution of biomass accumulated on the shore. The highest average NDVI values in the western patch were observed with south-easterly winds, while in the eastern patch, higher average NDVI values were recorded with south-westerly, westerly and north-westerly winds. The maximum coverage correlates with elevated temperatures and minimal rainfall, peaking between July and October. Leveraging these insights, we propose a replicable methodology for the early detection and strategic pre-shore collection of biomass, which could facilitate efficient coastal cleanup strategies and enhance biomass utility for biotechnological applications. Cystoseira sensu lato (s.l.) – encompassing the genera Cystoseira sensu stricto (s.s.), Ericaria and Gongolaria – is a diverse group of forest-forming brown macroalgae endemic to the warm-temperate North-east Atlantic. These algae have immense biogeographic and ecological significance and have been experiencing recent regional declines. Most Cystoseira s.l. display important morphological plasticity and can be confused with similar species. Therefore, species boundaries, geographic ranges and phylogenetic affinities remain imprecise for most. In the face of persistent taxonomic difficulties, several authors underlined the necessity for new molecular-based approaches, but studies so far lacked representativity, resolution and standardization. To fill in these gaps, in this study we sequenced a comprehensive collection of Cystoseira s.l. spanning its entire North-east Atlantic range for a ~1200 bp cox1 barcode, and sequenced selected individuals representing major genetic entities for a few additional plastid markers. Phylogeographic, phylogenetic and species delimitation methods revealed 27 Molecular Operational Taxonomic Units, including unaccounted cryptic diversity, and elucidated with unprecedented resolution species compositions and phylogenetic relationships within each genus. Some entities within the lineages Cystoseira compressa/humilis, Ericaria brachycarpa/crinita, E. selaginoides and tophulose Gongolaria, as well as among free-living algae, conflicted with a priori taxonomic assignments, and required the redefinition, reinstatement and recognition of new taxa. For some, diagnostic mutations and biogeography were more useful for species identifications than morphological characters or conventional barcoding gaps. A few species showed narrow geographic ranges and others were the sole representatives of their respective lineages. Several sister-species showed Atlantic vs Mediterranean complementary ranges. Phylogenetic signal of cox1 was nevertheless insufficient to confidently determine patterns of lineage splitting in several lineages and species complexes and did not improve significantly with additional plastid markers. We discuss novel systematics and biogeography insights considering the advantages and shortcomings of the barcoding approach employed, and how this comprehensive baseline study can be expanded to address multiple questions still left unanswered. The generalized use of molecular identification tools indicated that multispecific green tides are more common than previously thought. Temporal successions between bloom‐forming species on a seasonal basis were also revealed in different cold temperate estuaries, suggesting a key role of photoperiod and temperature controlling bloom development and composition. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, water temperatures are predicted to increase around 4°C by 2100 in Ireland, especially during late spring coinciding with early green tide development. Considering current and predicted temperatures, and photoperiods during bloom development, different eco‐physiological experiments were developed. These experiments indicated that the growth of Ulva lacinulata was controlled by temperature, while U. compressa was unresponsive to the photoperiod and temperatures assayed. Considering a scenario of global warming for Irish waters, an earlier development of bloom is expected in the case of U. lacinulata. This could have significant consequences for biomass balance in Irish estuaries and the maximum accumulated biomass during peak bloom. The observed seasonal patterns and experiments also indicated that U. compressa may facilitate U. lacinulata development. When both species were co‐cultivated, the culture performance showed intermediate responses to experimental treatments in comparison with monospecific cultures of both species. The development of advanced piezoelectric α‐quartz microelectromechanical system (MEMS) for sensing and precise frequency control applications requires the nanostructuration and on‐chip integration of this material on silicon material. However, the current quartz manufacturing methods are based on bonding bulk micromachined crystals on silicon, which limits the size, the performance, the integration cost, and the scalability of quartz microdevices. Here, chemical solution deposition, soft‐nanoimprint lithography, and top‐down microfabrication processes are combined to develop the first nanostructured epitaxial (100)α‐quartz/(100)Si piezoelectric cantilevers. The coherent Si/quartz interface and film thinness combined with a controlled nanostructuration on silicon–insulator–silicon technology substrates provide high force and mass sensitivity while preserving the mechanical quality factor of the microelectromechanical systems. This work proves that biocompatible nanostructured epitaxial piezoelectric α‐quartz‐based MEMS on silicon can be engineered at low cost by combining soft‐chemistry and top‐down lithographic techniques. Cultures of three native macroalgal species (Gracilariopsis longissima, Gracilaria bursa-pastoris and Chondracanthus teedei) were developed in open coastal waters of a shallow, potentially eutrophic bay in Southern Spain. Experimental trials to assess the technical feasibility of seaweed cultivation and nitrogen biofiltration potential were conducted between October 2014 and December 2015. Seaweeds were cultivated using submersible rafts in five periods of 9 weeks to identify the most suitable seasons and culture duration (3, 6 or 9 weeks). Using generalized linear models (GLMs), the most relevant environmental factors controlling the growth of the three seaweeds were identified. Maximum net growth rates varied between 1.39% day−1 in C. teedei (winter, 6 weeks) and 4.71% day−1 in G. longissima (autumn, 3 weeks). Overall, the best period to cultivate seaweeds in Cadiz Bay was from mid-winter to early summer. No clear effects of duration of the culture were observed for C. teedei and G. bursa-pastoris. Short culture periods of 3 weeks were more suitable for G. longissima. Tissue N contents generally were lower than the critical quota, and GLMs suggested a critical role of N limiting seaweed growth in this bay. Dissolved inorganic nitrogen was biofiltered from winter to early summer and revealed G. bursa-pastoris as the main biomitigator of nitrogen (up to 80 mg N m−1 month−1 in spring). The cultivation of two red macroalgal species, Chondracanthus teedei (Martens ex Roth) and Gracilariopsis longissima (S.G. Gmelin) Steentoft M, L.M. Irvine & W.F. Farnham, was assessed in a traditional salina, a system of earthen ponds used for marine salt extraction taking advantages of solar evaporation and tidal cycle. Vegetative thalli of both species were cultivated in rafts holding polypropylene ropes, from January to June 2015, when lock-gates were opened during the period of no salt production. The effects of three factors in the net growth rate were analysed: seedling density, water motion and seasonality. Water motion and seasonality showed a significant effect in the growth of both species. Seedling density only showed a significant effect in the growth of Gp. longissima, where the growth rates improved at high seedling densities. Values of tissue N were generally lower than critical quotas, suggesting that maximum growth was limited by the concentrations of dissolved nutrients. In addition, the high salinity and temperatures in late spring seemed to condition the values of net growth rate. The study suggested that macroalgal cultivation of these two valuable species could be a promising complementary activity in the integrated management of the salina during winter and early spring, when salinity is lower than 40 PSU, if nutrients in the water are increased with the semi-intensive fish cultivation and the hydrodynamic conditions along the rafts are enhanced. Cystoseira is a common brown algal genus widely distributed throughout the Atlantic and Mediterranean regions whose taxonomical assignment of specimens is often hampered by intra- and interspecific morphological variability. In this study, three mitochondrial regions, namely cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (COI), 23S rDNA (23S), and 23S-tRNAVal intergenic spacer (mt-spacer) were used to analyse the phylogenetic relationships of 22 Cystoseira taxa (n = 93 samples). A total of 135 sequences (48 from COI, 43 from 23S and 44 from mt-spacer) were newly generated and analysed together with Cystoseira sequences (9 COI, 31 23S and 35 mt-spacer) from other authors. Phylogenetic analysis of these three markers identified 3 well-resolved clades and also corroborated the polyphyletic nature of the genus. The resolution of Cystoseira taxa within the three clades improves significantly when the inclusion of specimens of related genera was minimized. COI and mt-spacer markers resolved the phylogeny of some of the Cystoseira taxa, such as the C. baccata, C. foeniculacea and C. usneoides. Furthermore, trends between phylogeny, embryonic development and available chemotaxonomic classifications were identified, showing that phylogenetic, chemical and morphological data should be taken into account to study the evolutionary relationships among the algae currently classified as Cystoseira. The resolution of Cystoseira macroalgae into three well supported clades achieved here is relevant for a more accurate isolation and identification of natural compounds and the implementation of conservation measures for target species. Enrichment of nutrients and metals in seawater associated with anthropogenic activities can threaten aquatic ecosystems. Consequently, nutrient and metal concentrations are parameters used to define water quality. The European Union’s Water Framework Directive (WFD) goes further than a contaminant-based approach and utilises indices to assess the Ecological Status (ES) of transitional water bodies (e.g. estuaries and lagoons). One assessment is based upon the abundance of opportunistic Ulva species, as an indication of eutrophication. The objective of this study was to characterise Ireland’s Ulva blooms through the use of WFD assessment, metal concentrations and taxonomic identity. Furthermore, the study assessed whether the ecological assessment is related to the metal composition in the Ulva. WFD algal bloom assessment revealed that the largest surveyed blooms had an estimated biomass of 2164 metric tonnes (w/w). DNA sequences identified biomass from all locations as Ulva rigida, with the exception of New Quay, which was Ulva rotundata. Some blooms contained significant amounts of As, Cu, Cr, Pb and Sn. The results showed that all metal concentrations had a negative relationship (except Se) with the Ecological Quality Ratio (EQR). However, only in the case of Mn were these differences significant (p = 0.038). Overall, the metal composition and concentrations found in Ulva were site dependent, and not clearly related to the ES. Nevertheless, sites with a moderate or poor ES had a higher variability in the metals levels than in estuaries with a high ES. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The brown macroalga Cystoseira tamariscifolia is a foundation species along the northeastern Atlantic and western Mediterranean Sea. It occurs from lower intertidal rock pools to the shallow subtidal. Anthropogenic pollution and rising seawater temperatures can threaten its local distributions. In order to address impacts of historical and current environmental changes, to quantify effective dispersal and population connectivity, and to provide genetic tools for restoration and coastal management strategies, we have developed ten microsatellite markers, validated on 48 individuals from a single population. With 2-11 alleles per locus, the observed heterozygosity varied between 0.244 and 0.875. All of the developed microsatellites cross-amplified also on Cystoseira amentacea. The ten microsatellite loci developed here show high genetic diversity, making them useful for connectivity and population genetic studies aimed at small to large spatial scales, and provide essential insight for the development of conservation strategies for this important but threatened foundation species. Several indices based on the composition and abundance of aquatic flora have been developed to assess the ecological status of coastal waters along the European coasts in the context of the Water Framework Directive. This directive pointed out the intercalibration of indices based on the same biological element within an eco-region to ensure the consistency and comparability among them. For a better management of coastal areas in the transition zone between two eco-regions, the comparison of indices developed for each eco-region may also be necessary. The aim of this work was to compare two indices based on macrophytes that have been proposed for two different and adjoining eco-regions: the RSL (Reduced Species List) in the Atlantic eco-region and the CARLIT (Cartography of littoral and upper sublittoral communities) in the Mediterranean. These indices were applied in 14 sites in the transition between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, where a wide range of anthropogenic pressures can be found, from high (Algeciras Bay) to almost negligible ("El Estrecho" Natural Park). Overall, both indices were sensitive to anthropogenic pressures and suitable to assess the ecological status. The comparison between indices suggested a bias in the assessment of the ecological status between good and high classes due to a different definition of high ecological status class between RSL and CARLIT. In addition, the most important disagreements between indices were found in the most degraded localities. This study presents the validation of a high-performance liquid chromatography diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) method for the determination of different mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) in the red alga Bostrychia scorpioides. The investigated MAAs, named bostrychines, have only been found in this specific species so far. The developed HPLC-DAD method was successfully applied for the quantification of the major MAAs in Bostrychia scorpioides extracts, collected from four different countries in Europe showing only minor differences between the investigated samples. In the past, several Bostrychia spp. have been reported to include cryptic species, and in some cases such as B. calliptera, B. simpliciuscula, and B. moritziana, the polyphyly was supported by differences in their MAA composition.
