The aim of this study was to develop a drug delivery copolymer. Hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) was grafted onto poly(tetrafluoroethylene) films using gamma rays as the initiator agent. The optimal conditions for the grafting procedure were determined through a series of experiments, considering the following factors: reaction time, temperature, HEMA concentration, solvent type, and gamma-ray doses. Grafting was accomplished using the oxidative-pre-irradiation method. The resulting copolymer was subjected to various characterizations, including thermal analysis (TGA and DSC), FTIR-ATR spectroscopy, contact angle measurements, and assessment of physicochemical properties. A comparison of organizations in Mexico and the USA demonstrates that, for these two countries, different quality improvement approaches are related to actual quality and financial performance. For 345 firms multiple quality improvement variables are correlated with seven quality measures, four financial measures, and one operating performance measure. Results suggest that in both countries an increase in employee involvement leads to improved quality-a decrease in internal failure costs, the percentage of items defective, and costs of quality. In Mexico an increase in employee knowledge about quality improvement and customer focus also leads to improved quality (as measured above). In the USA, but not in Mexico, the quality improvement approach relates to financial performance. An increase in senior executive leadership and an increased emphasis upon both design and conformance in the USA leads to an improved return on assets and increased net profit. In each country similar distributions from respondents regarding individual items that improve quality can be found, yet statistical modelling demonstrates country-specific models best explain quality improvement/performance relationships. Grey mould is reported in the vineyards of Castilla y León, Spain, every year. However, the natural populations of the pathogen have yet to be properly characterized. Vineyards from six wine‐producing areas were surveyed in 2002 and 2007, sampling from bunches of grapes with and without symptoms. A total of 283 Botrytis field isolates were selected for physiological and genetic analyses. Botrytis cinerea isolates predominated in the population, although isolates belonging to Botrytis pseudocinerea and Botrytis prunorum were also identified. These two species are recorded for the first time in Spain in this work. In addition, two isolates closely related to Botrytis californica were identified. Physiologically, the B. cinerea population is very diverse, displaying a normal distribution of aggressiveness values in Vitis vinifera leaves, suggesting a quantitative nature for this trait. Several isolates unable to cause infection were identified, most of them belonging to a mycelial morphotype. Population genetic analysis revealed that genotypic diversity is high and that multiple infections of the same bunch of grapes by different genotypes occur frequently. The high genotypic diversity observed, an even distribution of both mating types and the linkage disequilibrium values detected support a mixed mode of reproduction with low levels of clonality. The wine‐producing area in which each isolate was collected imposed a low degree of population differentiation, an effect that does not depend solely on the geographic distances but rather on the management practices used by growers and wine producer associations. Regular use of marijuana during adolescence enhances the risk of long-lasting neurobiological changes in adulthood. The present study was aimed at assessing the effect of long-term administration of the synthetic cannabinoid WIN55212.2 during adolescence in young adult mice. Adolescent mice aged 5 weeks were subjected daily to the pharmacological action of WIN55212.2 for 3 weeks and were then left undisturbed in their home cage for a 5-week period and finally evaluated by behavioral testing. Mice that received the drug during adolescence showed memory impairment in the Morris water maze, as well as a dose-dependent memory impairment in fear conditioning. In addition, the administration of 3 mg/kg WIN55212.2 in adolescence increased adult hippocampal AEA levels and promoted DNA hypermethylation at the intragenic region of the intracellular signaling modulator Rgs7, which was accompanied by a lower rate of mRNA transcription of this gene, suggesting a potential causal relation. Although the concrete mechanisms underlying the behavioral observations remain to be elucidated, we demonstrate that long-term administration of 3 mg/kg of WIN during adolescence leads to increased endocannabinoid levels and altered Rgs7 expression in adulthood and establish a potential link to epigenetic changes. Introduction: Cases of psychosis are being reported in people infected by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The relationship between psychosis and corticosteroids treatment is well known. However, there are relatively limited data so far correlating psychosis and SARSCoV-2. Objectives: To describe a case of manic psychosis in a 55-year-old woman treated with corticosteroids for COVID-19 infection. Discuss the etiopathogenic factors involved in psychosis in patients infected by COVID-19. Methods: We present the case of a 55-year-old woman, without previous psychiatric history, who was admitted to psychiatry due to a psychotic episode with maniac symptoms. Three weeks earlier, the patient had been admitted to Internal Medicine for bilateral SArs-CoV2 pneumonia, under treatment with high doses of corticosteroids. The patient presents a verbose and salty speech, euphoric mood with hyperergia, subjective increase of capacities, insomnia and delusional ideation with mystical-spiritual content with delusional interpretations and auditory hallucinations. The patient comes from Ukraine and she has been living in Spain for 20 years. She works as a household assistant. The patient relates various psychosocial stressors throughout her life. Results: Complementary diagnostic tests were without alterations. Low-dose antipsychotic treatment is prescribed, with a rapid recovery within a week. Finally, the patient showed complete insight of the episode and was discharged from the hospital being asymptomatic. Conclusions: It would be interesting to publish the reported cases of psychosis and infection by COVID-19 as well as to investigate the etiopathogenic factors that may be contributing to the development of psychosis in patients infected by the virus. Introduction: Since the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic, several studies have demonstrated its considerable psychological impact. The isolation and social distancing, the increased fear of being infected or infecting others and the insecurity generated by the economic impact, could contribute to an increase in the incidence of mental health issues, such as psychotic disorders. Objectives: The aim is to discuss four clinical cases in order to provide further evidence on this matter. Methods: We report on three females and one male with no personal psychiatric history who were admitted to a tertiary hospital during the first three months after the declaration of the pandemic. The average age was 44,25 ±14,97 years. Results: All patientsmet the International Statistical Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) criteria for acute and transient psychotic disorder. All of the episodes were triggered by the stress generated from the COVID-19.Complementary tests were unremarkable. They all tested negative for SARS-CoV-2. Rapid discharge with favorable response to relatively low doses of antipsychotics was possible with amean length of stay of 7,25±2,86 days. In two of the cases the delirious content was predominantly marked by the coronavirus itself. Conclusions: It has been suggested that the intense psychosocial stress associated with a new life-threatening disease and national lockdown restrictions could be triggers for new-onset psychotic disorders. Some authors have reported cases similar to ours, which means that we could be experiencing and increase in the incidence of psychotic disorders due to the exceptional circumstances we are living around the world. Mixtures of the dimethyl esters of adipic acid and 2,3:4,5-di- O-methylene-galactaric acid (Galx) were made to react in the melt with either 1,6-hexanediol or 1,12-dodecanediol to produce linear polycyclic copolyesters with aldarate unit contents varying from 10 up to 90 mole %. The copolyesters had weight-average molecular weights in the ∼35,000-45,000 g mol−1 range and a random microstructure, and were thermally stable up to nearly 300 °C. They displayed Tg in the -50 to -7 °C range with values largely increasing with the content in galactarate units. All the copolyesters were semicrystalline with Tm between 20 and 90 °C but only those made from 1,12-dodecanediol were able to crystallize from the melt at a crystallization rate that decreased as the contents in the two comonomers approached each other. Copolyesters containing minor amounts of galactarate units adopted the crystal structure characteristic of aliphatic polyesters but a new crystal polymorph was formed when the cyclic sugar units became the majority. Stress-strain parameters were sensitively affected by composition of the copolyesters with the mechanical behavior changing from flexible/ductile to stiff/brittle with the replacement of adipate units by the galactarate units. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Water repellency is a widespread property of Pinus pinaster and Eucalyptus globulus forest soils in NW Spain and is particularly severe during the summer dry conditions. The aim of this work was to compare actual water repellency at field-moist samples with potential water repellency after drying at 25 and 105 °C in samples collected at different times of year under four forest soils. Also, we investigated whether drying at 25 or 105 °C led to repellency values comparable to the highest levels reached under field conditions in the summer with a view to developing an appropriate sampling protocol towards estimating the maximum possible water repellency of a given soil as a key to establishing its environmental effects. The actual and potential water repellency was determined by using the water drop penetration time (WDPT) and molarity of an ethanol drop (MED) tests. Clear seasonal patterns of water repellency were observed from the results for the four forest soils, peaking in the dry period and disappearing after prolonged wet periods. Water repellency lasts longer in sandy loam soils than in more finely textured soils, and also under eucalyptus than under pine forests. Drying soil samples at 25 or 105 °C increased water repellency, as measured with the WDPT method, in the four soils, but especially in the non-repellent samples collected during the wet period. The increase was more marked in the sandy loam soils than in the more finely textured soils, and also after drying at 105 °C than at 25 °C. MED measurements exposed a common trait in the four soils; thus, the water repellency values obtained under field conditions in summer invariably exceeded those obtained after drying at 25 or 105 °C. In addition, the repellency values for dried samples collected in the wet period were never comparable to the maximum levels observed under field conditions in the summer. This work was undertaken for two main purposes. One was to examine spatial and temporal variability in surface water repellency under field conditions in sandy loam forest soils of NW Spain, and its relationship to weather and soil moisture conditions. The other purpose was to get further inside in the dynamics of soil water repellency by studying a wetting-drying cycle under controlled laboratory conditions. Both for the field and laboratory study, water repellency was determined using the Water Drop Penetration Time test. Soil water repellency under field conditions was found to exhibit a seasonal pattern, i.e. it peaked during the summer and was absent between November and May. The time required for repellency to become re-established during the spring was shorter under eucalyptus than under pine. Spatial variability peaked at an early stage of soil drying and was minimal during the wet period when soils were hydrophilic as well as at the end of the summer, when repellency was strongest. Spatial and temporal variability in water repellency was found to be negatively correlated with soil moisture and, to a lesser extent, with antecedent rainfall. The moisture range of the so-called transition zone (below which the soil is hydrophobic and also above which it is hydrophobic) differed for the pine (21-50%) and eucalyptus plantations (17-36%). The lower and upper bounds of the transition zone agreed well with the soil moisture contents at the permanent wilting point and at field capacity, respectively. The laboratory results with samples in the wetting phase confirmed those of the field tests. Water repellency increased slightly during the drying phase, but not so much as in the field. The article discusses findings of a study which examined the effect of wildfire on soil erodibility for common woodlands in Galicia, Spain. Several definitions of soil erodibility are presented. The criteria for the selection of locations burned by a wildfire included parent material, vegetation and presence of reference sites. Based on the results of the study, there were no significant changes in the particle size distribution of soil found on the burned sites. Another observation from the study was less effect of fire on aggregate stability.

This article discusses water repellency in soils from Spain as related to land use and vegetation patterns. Water repellency was determined by using the water drop penetration time test on field-moist samples collected during summer and was compared with the values for dried samples. Different land uses including maize crops, grassland, Pinus pinaster forest and Eucalyptus globulus forest were evaluated in various geological soils. The influence of vegetation on water repellency was found to be related to the content and type of soil organic matter. Water repellency persistence decreased with increasing soil depth. Forest soil samples were found to be the most water repellent.

Introduction: Narrative therapy in psychotic patients shows recovery as an adaptative process: the personal recovery journey. Myths have always brought cultural and institutional cohesion and bind all human beings in any era or country. Hero's Journey is a myth that appeals to any person who faces life challenges. The hero is an example of courage, strength, and resilience who resist setbacks and obstacles and in doing so experiences an identity transformation. The victory of the heroine is the victory of all mankind. When he returns from the journey he shares knowledge with the rest of the inhabitants of the "ordinary world". In Myth, this knowledge transcends intrahistory, and becomes part of popular culture outside the tale. Objectives: The aim of this work is to adapt Hero's Journey scheme to narrative psychotherapy in psychosis. Methods: The person is invited to his own-Hero's Journey and encouraged to try identities and coping strategies through narrative approach, methaphors and hope speech that normalizes recovery. The therapist doesn't show the way but motivates the individual to undertake a journey towards well-being and develop his potential overcoming difficulties along the way. Results: The journey teaches that challenges can be embraced and profitable. Narrative processing systems steered and blocked by illness are now dynamized, promoting desirable identity narratives and integrating them in one's self. Conclusions: Recovery journey is an adaptation, growth and selfrediscovery journey whose goal is individual fulfillment and wellbeing. In this paper an investigation is made of the properties and use of two aggregate measures of forecast bias and accuracy. These are metrics used in business to calculate aggregate forecasting performance for a family (group) of products. We find that the aggregate measures are not particularly informative if some of the one-step-ahead forecasts are biased. This is likely to be the case in practice if frequently employed forecasting methods are used to generate a large number of individual forecasts. In the paper, examples are constructed to illustrate some potential problems in the use of the metrics. We propose a simple graphical display of forecast bias and accuracy to supplement the information yielded by the accuracy measures. This support includes relevant boxplots of measures of individual forecasting success. This tool is simple but helpful as the graphic display has the potential to indicate forecast deterioration that can be masked by one or both of the aggregate metrics. Aims: To describe alcohol consumption of adolescent boys and girls in Palma de Mallorca, and its relationship with physical activity and socio-demographic factors. Methods: Four hundred and forty five adolescents (171 boys, 274 girls; 14-18 years old) selected from the school census (participation 96%), using two-stage probability sampling were studied. A semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire was administered and alcohol intake was analysed. Physical activity was computed as a ratio of energy expended in basal metabolic rate. Socio-demographic data were collected, and categorized as gender, mother's level of education, parental occupational status, and mother's region of origin. Results: About 60% of adolescents, 53% of boys and 65% of girls, reported alcohol consumption, which increased with age in boys (91% when they were 18 years old), but remained constant in girls. The adolescents consumed alcohol mainly on weekends; average consumption was four drinks per drinking day, and the most consumed drinks were mild distilled spirits. The mother's educational level and adolescents' physical activity were negatively and significantly related to alcohol consumption, whereas the adolescents from occupational upper-class parents and non Majorcan/Balearic mothers were positively and significantly related to alcohol consumption. Conclusions: The increased penetration of alcohol into the adolescents' environment may result in misuse of consumption. To give more information to parents and adolescents on considering alcohol to be a drug, and to promote physical activity among adolescents may be contributing factors towards decreased alcohol consumption among the latter age group. Research in the areas of both manufacturing and marketing/sales have advocated the integration of several important interrelated decisions between the two functions (i.e. product development, process development, marketing/sales planning, and manufacturing planning decisions). The process of managing the strategic alignment between a firm's business strategy, external environment, and the integration of manufacturing and marketing/sales decisions is very complex phenomenon that requires a level of analysis that has not occurred previously. This study examined the moderating effects of business strategy and demand uncertainty on the relationship between the integration of manufacturing and marketing/sales-based decisions and organizational performance. The study found general support for the proposed model, suggesting that the impact of the integration of manufacturing and marketing/sales decision on organizational performance is moderated by a firm's business strategy and demand uncertainty. By using a polymerase chain reaction based cloning strategy we isolated the gene ( carB) encoding the enzyme phytoene dehydrogenase from Phycomyces blakesleeanus. The deduced protein, a 583 residue polypeptide, showed great similarity to carotenoid dehydrogenases from other fungi and bacteria, especially in the amino-terminal region. The main conserved regions found in other phytoene dehydrogenases, which are thought to be essential for the enzymatic activity, are present in the sequence from Phycomyces. Heterologous expression of the Phycomyces gene in Escherichia coli showed that, as in other fungi and bacteria, a single polypeptide catalyzes the four dehydrogenations that convert phytoene to lycopene. RNA measurements indicated that the level of expression of the phytoene dehydrogenase gene in wild-type mycelia increased in response to blue light. The kinetics of this increase in transcription of the gene after blue light induction (0.1 and 0.4 W/m2) exhibit a two-step (biphasic) dependence on fluence rate, suggesting that there could be two separate components involved in the reception of the low and high blue light signal. The presence of vitamin A in the medium stimulated transcript accumulation in the wild type and in some carotenogenic mutant strains. A survey of firms in Mexico shows that many companies make limited use of modern forecasting methods. The forecasting techniques used in the US and included in the survey are little known or used by the reporting Mexican companies. This is in spite of the fact that business forecasting has been taught in colleges and universities in Mexico for many years. The most commonly used methods are the judgmental. A likely explanation is the unstable business situation suffered by companies in Mexico since the December 1994 devaluation. This article presents the results of applying multicriteria ABC analysis to maintenance inventories. A large service organization and a consumer goods manufacturer participated in the study. The managers in both organizations used cost and noncost criteria for developing the ABC categories for inventory management. The study shows that managers can develop noncost criteria and classify the inventory items in ways that combine the criteria types. Specific policies were defined for managing the items in the industrial finn. Once the benefits of the methodology were demonstrated, a yearlong program for implementing the system was developed. The project is estimated to cost less than 10 to 15% of the available storeroom clerk manhours and provide substantially greater benefits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article reports that improving the quality of an organization's products and services is fundamental to business success. The once-held view that product or service specification is static and readily achievable is gone. Managers in world-class companies realize that customer wants and desires are changing, that customers' expectations must be clearly understood, and that their firms must conform to customer wishes. This customer focus requires continual quality improvement, creating a dynamic business situation. Quality is defined and measured differently, largely dependent on one's viewpoint. According to researchers, quality is defined as excellence, value, conformance to specifications, and meeting or exceeding customers' expectations. The characteristics of a quality management system are influenced by the external factors that surround the firm. The organizational quality context is defined by the external quality demands, past quality performance, corporate direction and the competitive forces that have a bearing on quality.

This paper discusses some extensions to classical ABC analysis. Several alternatives to the usual cost-volume criteria for ranking the importance of inventory items are presented. These alternative measures have importance for several operating departments, but may be in conflict with one another or with the cost-volume measures. To reconcile these conflicts, a method for taking into account multiple criteria is presented and discussed. An application of the approach in a Mexican manufacturing firm is presented. The paper reports results of an experiment conducted to evaluate subjective versus objective combination of forecasts. The subjects were undergraduate students at Texas A&M. The students forecasted two different types of time series. The results found show that the subjective combination of forecasts improves their accuracy as compared with individual efforts. Four ex-ante weighting methods were also used to combine the forecasts. They all improve the accuracy of the forecasts. The best results, though, were from the subjective combination of forecasts. Introduction: One of the usual indications for Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is Paranoid Schizophrenia (PS), being performed usually in cases resistant to antipsychotics. Objectives: To present a clinical case of a patient with antipsychotic-resistant PS, including Clozapine, who received ECT. Methods: We present the case of a 47-year-old patient with an 8-years diagnosis of PS. He presented visual, auditory, and kinesthetic hallucinations, delusions, and thought insertion and diffusion phenomena that impeded concentration. He had received treatment with different antipsychotics (including Clozapine), without achieving remission of symptoms. He also presented significant adverse effects such as hypersalivation and extrapyramidal symptoms. Due to the poor response and the adverse effects that limited the dose increase, it was decided to start ECT. Results: The patient received a total of 9 sessions, presenting a significant reduction in symptoms since the 5th session (disappearance of the sensory-perceptual alterations and thought disturbances). As side effects, the patient presented amnesia of the moments prior to applying the therapy, which subsequently resolved. The patient continued to present concentration difficulties, although after ECT he denied the presence of thought insertion or diffusion phenomena to which he previously attributed the cause of these difficulties. Conclusions: Although less responsive than in other indications, ECT combined with antipsychotic drugs has been proven to be more effective than monotherapy (regardless of whether it's Clozapine or another). This lower response could be due to the use of ECT in the most resistant cases, since it has been demostrated that in more acute cases a faster improvement occurs when the two treatments are combined. Introduction: Facing extreme life experiences can impoverish the ability to narrate experience and self. Descriptive psychiatry's model of psychoeducation focusing insight in psychosis may fail its purpose and threaten the already damaged patient's identity. Through the process of accepting illness, a value-bearing individual can end up being considered dysfunctional and worthless and experience guilt, shame, hopelessness, demoralization and helplessness. Elseway, denying illness would be considered proof of anosognosia. Both situations may lead to illness narratives introjection, agency loss, own beliefs and competency mistrust and stagnation. Objectives: The aim is to show narrative therapy as an advantageous complement or alternative to objective psychiatry psychoeducation in psychosis clinical practice. Reintegrate one's life narratives and retrieve recovery agency is one of the most powerful, adaptative and healing a person can accomplish. Methods: Narrative model encourages the patient to build and tell coherent and desirable stories in which recovery is promoted, from a personal point of view, and validates these. A non-pathologizing speech, normalization, externalization, empathy, respect and kindness are recomended. It is fostered to embrace different truths and alternative versions of self, promoting dialogue and cooperation between selves to dynamize identity narratives and allow choosing a preferred self in each situation. Exploiting personal resources is encouraged. Results: The person feels reauthorized in the direction of life and recovery, starts narrating personal life stories and recover the possibility of social interaction. Conclusions: Through recovery process, the person regain an integrated sense of identity, separated from illness and develop an author-narrator-protagonist role in his own life story and the recovery process. Introduction: Adolescents developing severe disruptive behaviors and psychotic symptoms are ocasionally admited and diagnosed as severe mental ilness. Objectives: The purpose is to show a successful high dose treatment withdrawal in a young woman who was admitted to the Psychiatric Day Hospital with a previous history of 9 adolescent psychiatric unit's admissions, multidiagnosed, with bipolar and psychotic disorders among others. At the arrival her treatment was: haloperidol 4.5mg/d, quetiapine 1200mg/d, lamotrigine 125mg/d, valproic acid, 1750mg/d, melatonine 5mg/d, zolpidem 5mg/d. Methods: Stabilizer and antipsychotic drugs where gradually removed. She initially showed an illness role and a regressive attitude, with disproportionate reactions, frequent mood fluctuations, disrupting behavior and dissociative symptoms which included short self-limited hallucinatory phenomena that had complete remission with benzodiazepines. She started referring hallucinations on his first admission by copying another patient. Parent interviews reflect a rigid family system built around the daughter's illness, reacting aversively to the patients recovery and when feeling challenged during psychoeducation. We conducted a narrative approach that fosters hope, healthy aspects, and encouraged an autonomous self separated from the illness. Results: It was shown a growth in self-regulation, social interaction, life functionality with optimistic projection of the future, and disruptive behaviors ceased completely. Besides, she had a 18kg weight loss that took her from 34.3 BMI to a healthy appearance. Conclusions: During the 10 months of follow-up, no psychotic symptoms or major affective symptom were observed. Diagnosis when discharged was "previous diagnoses, currently in remission". Treatment was: fluoxetine 20 mg/d, topiramate 200 mg/d and clonazepam 0.5mg/d. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
