Giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) forests are common along the California coast. Attached on the rocky bottom at depths of approximately 5–25 m, the kelp, when mature, spans the water column and develops dense, buoyant canopies that interact with waves and currents. We present two novel results based on observations of surface gravity waves in a kelp forest in Point Loma, California. First, we report short wave (1–3 s) attenuation in kelp, quantified by an exponential decay coefficient α∼O10−3m−1—comparable to the dampening effect of sea ice. Second, we identify seasonal and tidal changes in attenuation, peaking mid‐summer with maximum kelp cover, and during low tide when a greater proportion of the fronds are at the surface. An exemplary for emerging knowledges and the capacity to provide reliable cloud services, cloud computing. Giving consumers on-demand access to "unlimited" computer resources is one of the key components of cloud computing. Single cloud-holding resources, however, are typically constrained and might not be able to handle the unexpected spike in user demands. In order to support resource sharing amongst clouds, the multi-cloud concept is thus established. These days, offering resources and administrations across numerous clouds is unquestionably amazing. The goal of conventional research on cloud scheduling is to reduce costs or increase speed. However, the major indicator of QoS and a vital problem is the dependability of work process scheduling. As a result, multi-objective scheduling for a logical work process in a multi-cloud environment is suggested in this research with the goal of controlling the work process while also balancing cost and timeliness while satisfying the criterion of reliability. The adaptive golden eagle optimisation (AGEO) algorithm is created to realise this idea. The solution encoding, fitness analysis, and updating functions are used in the proposed algorithm's validation. Different workflow models are employed for the experimental study, and performance is assessed using various indicators. The projected approach attained 1920 utilization. Red lesion identification at its early stage is very essential for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy to prevent loss of vision. This work proposes a red lesion detection algorithm that uses Hexagonal pattern-based features with two-level segmentation that can detect hemorrhage and microaneurysms in the fundus image. The proposed scheme initially pre-processes the fundus image followed by a two-level segmentation. The level 1 segmentation eliminates the background whereas the level 2 segmentation eliminates the blood vessels that introduce more false positives. A hexagonal pattern-based feature is extracted from the red lesion candidates which can highly differentiate the lesion from non-lesion regions. The hexagonal pattern features are then trained using the recurrent neural network and are classified to eliminate the false negatives. For the evaluation of the proposed red lesion algorithm, the datasets namely ROC challenge, e-ophtha, DiaretDB1, and Messidor are used with the metrics such as Accuracy, Recall, Precision, F1 score, Specificity, and AUC. The scheme provides an average Accuracy, Recall (Sensitivity), Precision, F1 score, Specificity, and AUC of 95.48%, 84.54%, 97.3%, 90.47%, 86.81% and 93.43% respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article is composed of three independent commentaries about the state of Integrated, Coordinated, Open, Networked (ICON) principles (Goldman et al., 2021, https://doi.org/10.1002/essoar.10508554.1) in the AGU section paleoclimatology and paleoceanography (P&P), and a discussion on the opportunities and challenges of adopting them. Each commentary focuses on a different topic: (Section 2) Global collaboration, technology transfer and application, reproducibility, and data sharing and infrastructure; (Section 3) Local knowledge, global gain: improving interactions within the scientific community and with locals, indigenous communities, stakeholders, and the public; (Section 4) Field, experimental, remote sensing, and real‐time data research and application. P&P projects can better include ICON principles by directly incorporating them into research proposals. A promising way to overcome the challenges of interdisciplinarity and integration is to foster networking, which will advance our research discipline through the application of ICON. Plain Language Summary: Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology seeks to reveal past changes in the oceans and the climate, to help us better understand how Earth systems work. Traditionally, it has a strong focus on international networks and cooperation and we have accomplished many international projects. However, we are still facing some major challenges to achieve equity among researchers and science questions. In this article we discuss the current state, issues and solutions from three different perspectives: (a) data structure problems and data sharing issues, (b) relationships between research groups with different levels of knowledge, cultural aspects and their interaction with local communities in fieldwork, and (c) utilization of data, instrument sharing, promotion of networking, and effective communication with the public to make our research as inclusive and visible as possible. Actions aimed at ICON could be further promoted by research programs, governments, and scientists via integration of cooperation strategies into research projects. Atomtronics deals with matter-wave circuits of ultracold atoms manipulated through magnetic or laser-generated guides with different shapes and intensities. In this way, new types of quantum networks can be constructed in which coherent fluids are controlled with the know-how developed in the atomic and molecular physics community. In particular, quantum devices with enhanced precision, control, and flexibility of their operating conditions can be accessed. Concomitantly, new quantum simulators and emulators harnessing on the coherent current flows can also be developed. Here, the authors survey the landscape of atomtronics-enabled quantum technology and draw a roadmap for the field in the near future. The authors review some of the latest progress achieved in matter-wave circuits' design and atom-chips. Atomtronic networks are deployed as promising platforms for probing many-body physics with a new angle and a new twist. The latter can be done at the level of both equilibrium and nonequilibrium situations. Numerous relevant problems in mesoscopic physics, such as persistent currents and quantum transport in circuits of fermionic or bosonic atoms, are studied through a new lens. The authors summarize some of the atomtronics quantum devices and sensors. A grand challenge from the wind energy industry is to provide reliable forecasts on mountain winds several hours in advance at microscale (∼100 m) resolution. This requires better microscale wind-energy physics included in forecasting tools, for which field observations are imperative. While mesoscale (∼1 km) measurements abound, microscale processes are not monitored in practice nor do plentiful measurements exist at this scale. After a decade of preparation, a group of European and U.S. collaborators conducted a field campaign during 1 May–15 June 2017 in Vale Cobrão in central Portugal to delve into microscale processes in complex terrain. This valley is nestled within a parallel double ridge near the town of Perdigão with dominant wind climatology normal to the ridges, offering a nominally simple yet natural setting for fundamental studies. The dense instrument ensemble deployed covered a ∼4 km × 4 km swath horizontally and ∼10 km vertically, with measurement resolutions of tens of meters and seconds. Meteorological data were collected continuously, capturing multiscale flow interactions from synoptic to microscales, diurnal variability, thermal circulation, turbine wake and acoustics, waves, and turbulence. Particularly noteworthy are the extensiveness of the instrument array, space–time scales covered, use of leading-edge multiple-lidar technology alongside conventional tower and remote sensors, fruitful cross-Atlantic partnership, and adaptive management of the campaign. Crown ethers are effective at binding cations and through substitution onto the core of photoactive naphthalene diimide molecules (NDIs), cation binding can be detected via changes in UV-visible absorption and/or fluorescence emission. In this work, two new NDI-crown ether cation sensors (aza-15-crown-5 ether NDI, 5, and aza-18-crown-6 ether NDI, 6) have been synthesised and changes in UV-visible and fluorescence spectra upon addition of various cations investigated. A substantial blue shift in the UV-visible absorption of 75 nm was observed for 6 with a 1 : 1 addition of Na+ or K+, providing a clear colourimetric readout, however, no significant spectral changes were observed for 5 with the cations trialled at this level of analyte. Calcium cations do, however, elicit a response from 5 at substantially higher molar ratios, with some perturbation of the absorption spectrum observable, and an approximately six-fold increase in fluorescence emission. Theoretical calculations indicate that for 6, K+ and Na+ bind to the ether oxygens resulting in a blue shift similar to that observed experimentally. Ca2+ however, was found to bind quite differently with 5via both the ether oxygens and the carbonyl group on the NDI. This observation highlights how small structural changes can lead to different and unexpected behaviour and that investigation of underlying binding mechanisms is important to inform the rational design of future systems. A highly reliable interface of an ultrathin CuSiN self-aligned barrier between Cu film and nanoporous SiC:H film has been developed in the present work for the 65 nm node and below. It is shown that the multilayer of CuSiN (4 nm)/SiC:H (15 nm)/SiCN:H (10–15 nm) as a capping barrier have the enough ability to prevent copper diffusion at elevated temperatures even up to 500 °C, good barrier hermeticity, and appropriate mechanical characteristics. With this kind of barrier stack, higher interfacial adhesion between the Cu film and dielectric barrier is achieved. Marine spatial planning (MSP) seeks to reduce conflicts and environmental impacts, and promote sustainable use of marine ecosystems. Existing MSP approaches have successfully determined how to achieve target levels of ocean area for particular uses while minimizing costs and impacts, but they do not provide a framework that derives analytical solutions in order to co-ordinate siting of multiple uses while balancing the effects of planning on each sector in the system. We develop such a framework for guiding offshore aquaculture (bivalve, finfish, and kelp farming) development in relation to existing sectors and environmental concerns (wild-capture fisheries, viewshed quality, benthic pollution, and disease spread) in California, USA. We identify >250,000 MSP solutions that generate significant seafood supply and billions of dollars in revenue with minimal impacts (often < 1%) on existing sectors and the environment. We filter solutions to identify candidate locations for highvalue, low-impact aquaculture development. Finally, we confirm the expectation of substantial value of our framework over conventional planning focused on maximizing individual objectives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The inclusion of legumes in semi‐arid native grasslands may promote the productivity and nutritive value of forage. This study was designed to assess the effect of legumes (the introduced legume Medicago sativa or the native legume Dalea purpurea) and soil P fertility (addition of 0, 50, or 200 P2O5 kg/ha at seeding) on the dry matter and nutrient content of native grasses mixtures, compared with the commonly used introduced forage grass Bromus biebersteinii grown with M. sativa. Plant harvests were performed in September 2008, July 2009 and September 2009. Plants nutrient content, δ15N value and dry matter were analysed. Results show that the M. sativa enhanced the N and P concentrations of native grass mixtures early in the summer, as well as the N concentration in Bouteloua gracilis in late summer of the driest year, 2009. The higher AM fungal diversity promoted by M. sativa was positively correlated with the dry matter and nitrogen uptake of M. sativa and with the P concentration of native grasses, in early summer. Overall, this study shows that M. sativa promoted beneficial AM fungal taxa and improved forage production in the semi‐arid prairies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Robust methodology to install amide, carbamate, urea and sulfonamide functionality to the 1,8-naphthalimide scaffold has been developed and exemplified. New benzamidonaphthalimide 6, synthesised using this approach, was found to be sensitive to base whereupon fluorescence emission strongly increases (＞10-fold) and red-shifts (＞4000 cm−1). Lassa virus (LASV) infection causes an acute, multisystemic viral hemorrhagic fever that annually infects an estimated 100 000 to 300 000 persons in West Africa. This pathogenesis study evaluated the temporal progression of disease in guinea pigs following aerosol and subcutaneous inoculation of the Josiah strain of LASV as well as the usefulness of Strain 13 guinea pigs as an animal model for Lassa fever. After experimental infection, guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus; n = 67) were serially sampled to evaluate the temporal progression of infection, gross and histologic lesions, and serum chemistry and hematologic changes. Guinea pigs developed viremia on day 5 to 6 postexposure (PE), with clinical signs appearing by day 7 to 8 PE. Complete blood counts revealed lymphopenia and thrombocytopenia. Gross pathologic findings included skin lesions and congested lungs. Histologic lesions consisted of cortical lymphoid depletion by day 6 to 7 PE with lymphohistiocytic interstitial pneumonia at 7 to 8 days PE. Scattered hepatocellular degeneration and cell death were also noted in the liver and, to a lesser extent, in other tissues including the haired skin, lung, heart, adrenal gland, lymph nodes, thymus, and spleen. The first cell types to demonstrate staining for viral antigen were fibroblastic reticular cells and macrophages/dendritic cells in the lymph nodes on day 5 to 6 PE. This study demonstrates similarities between Lassa viral disease in human infections and experimental guinea pig infection. These shared pathologic characteristics support the utility of guinea pigs as an additional animal model for vaccine and therapeutic development under the Food and Drug Administration’s Animal Rule. Context. Habitat loss and degradation has contributed significantly to the decline of many species worldwide. To address this loss, we first require a comprehensive understanding of habitat requirements and resource-use patterns of the species under threat. Aims. The study aimed to quantify variation in the habitat of a species threatened by habitat loss and degradation, the brush-tailed phascogale (Phascogale tapoatafa tapoatafa), by measuring several physical characteristics of trees and ground cover, as well as to determine potential foraging resource preferences using abundance data from a long-term monitoring study. Methods. Phascogale monitoring surveys were conducted over a 13-year period from 2000 to 2012. Habitat variables characterising tree communities, ground cover and coarse woody debris were used to develop explanatory models of phascogale abundance at the site scale. Tree species preference by foraging phascogales was evaluated by comparing usage (trees on which they were captured) and availability. Key results. The highest overall animal abundance was at sites characterised by associations of red stringybark, red box, grey box and broad-leaved and narrow-leaved peppermints. At these sites, red stringybark and grey box trees were of small diameter and tended to have small hollows. These sites also had low average tree height, low grass and/or herb and shrub cover and low volumes of coarse woody debris. From a resource-use perspective, phascogales foraged preferentially on certain species of Eucalyptus. Conclusions. Our study suggests that phascogale abundance is highly spatially and temporally variable, most likely as a response to heterogeneity in habitat and foraging resources operating at a range of spatial scales. Implications. This study has provided new information concerning spatial patterns of phascogale abundance and resource use within a forested area in central Victoria that has been subjected to multiple disturbances. Currently, the composition and age structure of tree communities and ground habitats are a response to severe disturbance due to past mining and harvesting activities. Successful conservation of this threatened species could be enhanced through active management of this forest to maintain the ongoing supply of nesting hollows and foraging resources. Thermal diffusion factors, αT, are reported for the systems He–nC3H8, He–C4F8, and CH4–C4F8 at 300 K as functions of concentration and pressure; excess second virial coefficients are also reported for each system. The αT values are extrapolated to zero pressure and the theory of Oost, Los, Cauwenbergh, and van Dael is used to predict the pressure dependence of αT at each concentration for comparison with the experimental results. The wide-spread implementation of the so-called hydrogen economy is currently partially limited by an economically feasible way of storing hydrogen. In this context, ammonia has been commonly presented as a viable option for chemical storage due its high hydrogen content (17.6 wt%). However, its use as an energy carrier requires the development of catalytic systems capable of releasing hydrogen at adequate rates and conditions. At the moment, the most active catalytic systems for the decomposition of ammonia are based on ruthenium, however its cost and scarcity inhibit the wide scale use of these catalysts. This issue has triggered research on the development of alternative catalysts based on more sustainable systems using more readily available, non-noble metals mainly iron, cobalt and nickel as well as a series of transition metal carbides and nitrides and bimetallic systems, which are reviewed herein. There have been some promising cobalt- and nickel-based catalysts reported for the decomposition of ammonia but metal dispersion needs to be increased in order to become more attractive candidates. Conversely, there seems to be less scope for improvement of iron-based catalysts and metal carbides and nitrides. A recent large-scale assessment of bacterial communities across a range of UK soil types showed that bacterial community structure was strongly determined by soil pH. We analysed a data set of eukaryotic 454 sequencing 18S rDNA from the surveyed samples and showed significant differences in eukaryotic assemblages according to pH class, mostly between low pH and higher pH soils. Soil eukaryote communities (per sample) differed most at the taxonomic rank approximating to order level. Taxonomies assigned with the P rotist R ibosomal R eference and the S ilva 119 databases were taxonomically inconsistent, mostly due to differing 18S annotations, although general structure and composition according to pH were coherent. A relatively small number of lineages, mostly putative parasitic protists and fungi, drive most differences between pH classes, with weaker contributions from bacterivores and autotrophs. Overall, soil parasites included a large diversity of alveolates, in particular apicomplexans. Phylogenetic analysis of alveolate lineages demonstrates a large diversity of unknown gregarines, novel perkinsids, coccidians, colpodellids and uncharacterized alveolates. Other novel and/or divergent lineages were revealed across the eukaryote tree of life. Our study provides an in-depth taxonomic evaluation of micro-eukaryotic diversity, and reveals novel lineages and insights into their relationships with environmental variables across soil gradients. Background Palbociclib is a recently approved drug for use in combination with letrozole as initial endocrine-based therapy for the treatment of postmenopausal women with advanced estrogen receptor-positive/human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative (ER+/HER2-) breast cancer. This report assesses the impact of palbociclib in combination with letrozole versus letrozole alone on patient-reported outcomes of pain. Methods Palbociclib was evaluated in an open-label, randomized, phase II study (PALOMA-1/TRIO-18) among postmenopausal women with advanced ER+/HER2- breast cancer who had not received prior systemic treatment for their advanced disease. Patients received continuous oral letrozole 2.5 mg daily alone or the same letrozole dose and schedule plus oral palbociclib 125 mg, given once daily for 3 weeks followed by 1 week off over repeated 28-day cycles. The primary study endpoint was investigator-assessed progression-free survival in the intent-to-treat population, and these results have recently been published (Finn et al., Lancet Oncol 2015;16:25-35). One of the key secondary endpoints was the evaluation of pain, as measured using the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) patient-reported outcome tool. The BPI was administered at baseline and on day 1 of every cycle thereafter until disease progression and/or treatment discontinuation. Clinical trial registration This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT00721409). Results There were no statistically significant differences in Pain Severity or Pain Interference scores of the BPI between the two treatment groups for the overall population or among those with any bone disease at baseline. A limitation of the study is that results were not adjusted for the concomitant use of opioids or other medications used to control pain. Conclusions The addition of palbociclib to letrozole was associated with increased efficacy without negatively impacting pain severity or pain interference with daily activities. The flux of dimethylsulfide (DMS) to the atmosphere is generally inferred using water sampled at or below 2 m depth, thereby excluding any concentration anomalies at the air-sea interface. Two independent techniques were used to assess the potential for near-surface DMS enrichment to influence DMS emissions and also identify the factors influencing enrichment. DMS measurements in productive frontal waters over the Chatham Rise, east of New Zealand, did not identify any significant DMS gradients between 0.01 and 6 m in sub-surface seawater, whereas DMS enrichment in the sea-surface microlayer was variable, with a mean enrichment factor (EF; the concentration ratio between DMS in the SSM and in sub-surface water) of 1.7. Physical and biological factors influenced sea-surface microlayer DMS concentration, with high enrichment (EF > 1.3) only recorded in a dinoflagellate-dominated bloom, and associated with low to medium wind speeds and near-surface temperature gradients. On occasion, high DMS enrichment preceded periods when the air-sea DMS flux, measured by eddy covariance, exceeded the flux calculated using COARE parameterised gas transfer velocities and measured sub-surface seawater DMS concentrations. The results of these two independent approaches suggest that air-sea emissions may be influenced by near-surface DMS production under certain conditions, and highlights the need for further study to constrain the magnitude and mechanisms of DMS production in the sea surface microlayer. A key step in the evolution of multicellular organisms is the formation of cooperative multicellular groups. It has been suggested that predation pressure may promote multicellular group formation in some algae and bacteria, with cells forming groups to lower their chance of being eaten. We use the green alga Chlorella vulgaris and the protist Tetrahymena thermophila to test whether predation pressure can initiate the formation of colonies. We found that: (1) either predators or just predator exoproducts promote colony formation; (2) higher predator densities cause more colonies to form; and (3) colony formation in this system is facultative, with populations returning to being unicellular when the predation pressure is removed. These results provide empirical support for the hypothesis that predation pressure promotes multicellular group formation. The speed of the reversion of populations to unicellularity suggests that this response is due to phenotypic plasticity and not evolutionary change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Machupo virus, the cause of Bolivian hemorrhagic fever, is a highly lethal viral hemorrhagic fever with no Food and Drug Administration–approved vaccines or therapeutics. This study evaluated the guinea pig as a model using the Machupo virus–Chicava strain administered via aerosol challenge. Guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) were serially sampled to evaluate the temporal progression of infection, gross and histologic lesions, and sequential changes in serum chemistry and hematology. The incubation period was 5 to 12 days, and complete blood counts revealed leukopenia with lymphopenia and thrombocytopenia. Gross pathologic findings included congestion and hemorrhage of the gastrointestinal mucosa and serosa, noncollapsing lungs with fluid exudation, enlarged lymph nodes, and progressive pallor and friability of the liver. Histologic lesions consisted of foci of degeneration and cell death in the haired skin, liver, pancreas, adrenal glands, lymph nodes, tongue, esophagus, salivary glands, renal pelvis, small intestine, and large intestine. Lymphohistiocytic interstitial pneumonia was also present. Inflammation within the central nervous system, interpreted as nonsuppurative encephalitis, was histologically apparent approximately 16 days postexposure and was generally progressive. Macrophages in the tracheobronchial lymph node, on day 5 postexposure, were the first cells to demonstrate visible viral antigen. Viral antigen was detected throughout the lymphoid system by day 9 postexposure, followed by prominent spread within epithelial tissues and then brain. This study provides insight into the course of Machupo virus infection and supports the utility of guinea pigs as an additional animal model for vaccine and therapeutic development. A feasibility study of active screen plasma nitriding (ASPN) of Ti6Al4V titanium alloy was conducted using a CP-Ti cage as the active screen under various process conditions. The process variables included active screen setup parameters (two different potentials of 0%-bias and 100%-bias), treatment temperature (750 and 850°C), gas mixture (10/90, 25/75, 50/50 and 100/0 of N2/H2) and treatment time (10 h) under 1·5 mbar pressure. The samples were characterised by X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, microhardness and surface roughness tests. The experimental results have demonstrated that Ti–6Al–4V alloy can be treated by ASPN using a Ti screen. A Ti nitride compound layer consisting of TiN followed by Ti2N was formed on top of the surface and an Al rich layer was formed between the Ti nitride layer and the α-Ti case. The surface hardness of the samples nitrided at 750 and 850°C was 800 and 1400 HV respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Current global inventories of ammonia emissions identify the ocean as the largest natural source. This source depends on seawater pH, temperature, and the concentration of total seawater ammonia (NH x(sw)), which reflects a balance between remineralization of organic matter, uptake by plankton, and nitrification. Here we compare [NH x(sw)] from two global ocean biogeochemical models (BEC and COBALT) against extensive ocean observations. Simulated [NH x(sw)] are generally biased high. Improved simulation can be achieved in COBALT by increasing the plankton affinity for NH x within observed ranges. The resulting global ocean emissions is 2.5 TgN a−1, much lower than current literature values (7-23 TgN a−1), including the widely used Global Emissions InitiAtive (GEIA) inventory (8 TgN a−1). Such a weak ocean source implies that continental sources contribute more than half of atmospheric NH x over most of the ocean in the Northern Hemisphere. Ammonia emitted from oceanic sources is insufficient to neutralize sulfate aerosol acidity, consistent with observations. There is evidence over the Equatorial Pacific for a missing source of atmospheric ammonia that could be due to photolysis of marine organic nitrogen at the ocean surface or in the atmosphere. Accommodating this possible missing source yields a global ocean emission of ammonia in the range 2-5 TgN a−1, comparable in magnitude to other natural sources from open fires and soils. Objective:Caffeine is effective in the treatment of apnea of prematurity but it is not well known if the therapeutic concentration of the drug has an impact on other neonatal outcomes such as chronic lung disease (CLD). The aim of this study was to determine if there is an association between caffeine concentrations and the incidence of CLD in premature infants of \< 29 weeks of gestation.Study design:A retrospective chart review of all the infants born \< 29 weeks of gestation from 2007 to 2011, who survived until discharge or 36 weeks postmenstrual age, was conducted. Caffeine concentrations were obtained weekly on infants getting the drug. Average caffeine concentrations (ACCs) were determined for the duration of caffeine therapy and correlated with CLD, length of stay (LOS), oxygen at discharge (OD), duration of ventilation (DV) and total charges for hospitalization for each patient.Results:Of the 222 eligible infants, 198 met the inclusion criteria. ACC for infants without CLD was 17.0±3.8 μg ml−1 compared with infants with CLD 14.3±6.1 μg ml−1 (P<0.001). Infants receiving high ACC (>14.5 μg ml−1) had lower incidence of patent ductus arteriosus, lesser number of days on ventilator and oxygen, lesser need for diuretics, lower incidence of CLD, were more likely to go home without supplemental OD and had lower LOS and lower total hospital charges (all differences were significant P<0.05) Multiple logistic regression modeling after adjusting for confounding variables indicated that higher caffeine concentrations were significantly associated with decrease in CLD. Receiver operating curve analysis confirmed a significant predictive ability of caffeine concentration for CLD with a cutoff concentration of 14.5 μg ml−1 (sensitivity of 42.6 and specificity of 86.8). The AUC (area under the curve) for the prediction of CLD was 0.632 (95% confidence interval 0.56-0.69, P=0.009).Conclusions:Caffeine concentrations >14.5 μg ml−1 were strongly correlated with reduced CLD in infants born at \< 29 weeks of gestation. Higher caffeine concentrations were associated with decreased total hospital charges, DV, OD and LOS. Insights of the chemical mechanism for the hydrothermal synthesis of nanostructured alumina are elucidated for the first time, demonstrating the effect of the NaOH : Al molar ratio not only on the resulting morphology of the material but also on the product yield. Highly uniform pure γ-Al2O3 nanorods are synthesised under acidic conditions (pH ＜ 4), while basic medium (pH ＞ 9) lead to γ-Al2O3 nanoplates. Maximisation of the morphological purity leads to a decrease in the overall aluminium yield which can be overcome by successful reusability of the synthesis medium in an effort to increase efficiency (yield and productivity) and minimise waste production towards feasible large-scale manufacturing of nanostructured materials. Air-sea dimethylsulfide (DMS) fluxes and bulk air-sea gradients were measured over the Southern Ocean in February-March 2012 during the Surface Ocean Aerosol Production (SOAP) study. The cruise encountered three distinct phytoplankton bloom regions, consisting of two blooms with moderate DMS levels, and a high biomass, dinoflagellate-dominated bloom with high seawater DMS levels (> 15 nM). Gas transfer coefficients were considerably scattered at wind speeds above 5ms-1. Bin averaging the data resulted in a linear relationship between wind speed and mean gas transfer velocity consistent with that previously observed. However, the wind-speed-binned gas transfer data distribution at all wind speeds is positively skewed. The flux and seawater DMS distributions were also positively skewed, which suggests that eddy covariance-derived gas transfer velocities are consistently influenced by additional, log-normal noise. A flux footprint analysis was conducted during a transect into the prevailing wind and through elevated DMS levels in the dinoflagellate bloom. Accounting for the temporal/ spatial separation between flux and seawater concentration significantly reduces the scatter in computed transfer velocity. The SOAP gas transfer velocity data show no obvious modification of the gas transfer-wind speed relationship by biological activity or waves. We estimated emissions of carbon, as equivalent CO2 (CO2e), from planned fires in four sites in a southeastern Australian forest. Emission estimates were calculated using measurements of fuel load and carbon content of different fuel types, before and after burning, and determination of fuel-specific emission factors. Median estimates of emissions for the four sites ranged from 20 to 139 MgCO2e ha-1. Variability in estimates was a consequence of different burning efficiencies of each fuel type from the four sites. Higher emissions resulted from more fine fuel (twigs, decomposing matter, near-surface live and leaf litter) or coarse woody debris (CWD; > 25mm diameter) being consumed. In order to assess the effect of declining information quantity and the inclusion of coarse woody debris when estimating emissions, Monte Carlo simulations were used to create seven scenarios where input parameters values were replaced by probability density functions. Calculation methods were (1) all measured data were constrained between measured maximum and minimum values for each variable; (2) as in (1) except the proportion of carbon within a fuel type was constrained between 0 and 1; (3) as in (2) but losses of mass caused by fire were replaced with burning efficiency factors constrained between 0 and 1; and (4) emissions were calculated using default values in the Australian National Greenhouse Accounts (NGA), National Inventory Report 2011, as appropriate for our sites. Effects of including CWD in calculations were assessed for calculation Method 1, 2 and 3 but not for Method 4 as the NGA does not consider this fuel type. Simulations demonstrate that the probability of estimating true median emissions declines strongly as the amount of information available declines. Including CWD in scenarios increased uncertainty in calculations because CWD is the most variable contributor to fuel load. Inclusion of CWD in scenarios generally increased the amount of carbon lost. We discuss implications of these simulations and how emissions from prescribed burns in temperate Australian forests could be improved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Machupo virus, the causative agent of Bolivian hemorrhagic fever (BHF), is a highly lethal viral hemorrhagic fever of which little is known and for which no Food and Drug Administration–approved vaccines or therapeutics are available. This study evaluated the cynomolgus macaque as an animal model using the Machupo virus, Chicava strain, via intramuscular and aerosol challenge. The incubation period was 6 to 10 days with initial signs of depression, anorexia, diarrhea, mild fever, and a petechial skin rash. These were often followed by neurologic signs and death within an average of 18 days. Complete blood counts revealed leukopenia as well as marked thrombocytopenia. Serum chemistry values identified a decrease in total protein, marked increases in alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase, and moderate increases in alkaline phosphatase. Gross pathology findings included a macular rash extending across the axillary and inguinal regions beginning at approximately 10 days postexposure as well as enlarged lymph nodes and spleen, enlarged and friable liver, and sporadic hemorrhages along the gastrointestinal mucosa and serosa. Histologic lesions consisted of foci of degeneration and necrosis/apoptosis in the haired skin, liver, pancreas, adrenal glands, lymph nodes, tongue, esophagus, salivary glands, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. Lymphohistiocytic interstitial pneumonia was also present. Inflammation within the central nervous system (nonsuppurative encephalitis) was histologically apparent approximately 16 days postexposure and was generally progressive. This study provides insight into the course of Machupo virus infection in cynomolgus macaques and supports the usefulness of cynomolgus macaques as a viable model of human Machupo virus infection. What is known and objective Few studies have evaluated the effect of vancomycin dosing on the health outcomes in geriatric patients. Data are needed to determine whether higher vancomycin dosing strategies are more effective in geriatric patients and/or lead to excessive rates of adverse events. Methods This study used a subset of patients aged ≥65 years from a multicentre, retrospective, cohort study of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus ( MRSA) bacteraemia. Patients received ≥ 48 h of empiric vancomycin between 1 July 2002 and 30 June 2008. We compared the incidence of nephrotoxicity and in-hospital mortality in patients who received guideline-recommended dosing (at least 15 mg/kg/dose) to patients who received lower dosing. Multivariable generalized mixed-effect models were constructed to determine independent risk factors for nephrotoxicity and in-hospital mortality. Results and discussion Half of the cohort (46% of 92 patients) received guideline-recommended dosing. Empiric use of weight-based dosing did increase the percentage of patients achieving a vancomycin trough ≥ 15 mg/L (57% vs. 42%). Nephrotoxicity occurred in 32% of patients and 26% died during their hospitalization. Guideline-recommended dosing was not associated with significant changes in nephrotoxicity ( OR 1·13; 95% CI 0·40-3·19) or in-hospital mortality ( OR 1·14; 95% CI 0·41-3·18) in the multivariable analysis. What is new and conclusion In this study of geriatric patients, guideline-recommended dosing was not associated with significant changes in nephrotoxicity or mortality. As 40% of the patients who received guideline-recommended dosing failed to achieve a target vancomycin trough of ≥ 15 mg/L, future studies should focus on dosing strategies to increase target attainment rate.
