The article presents a study to record the current trends regarding erythromycin resistance among group A beta-hemolytic streptococci (GABHS) isolates in Greece and to investigate the possible relationship between this resistance and patient age and/or the isolation period. Since macrolides are common alternatives to penicillin for the treatment of streptococcal infections, erythromycin resistance among GAB HS isolates could pose a therapeutic problem in cases of streptococcal pharyngotonsillitis occurring in Greek children. The prudent use of macrolides in the manage- ment of streptococcal infections in Greece, especially among preschool children, is therefore recommended to help control any further spread of resistance among GABHS.
