COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on surgical activities. The aim of this multi-centric, retrospective study was to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on breast surgery. The patients who operated during the pre-pandemic year 2019 were compared to those operated in 2020. Fourteen Breast Care Units provided data on breast surgical procedures performed in 2020 and 2019: total number of breast-conserving surgery (BCS), number of 1st level oncoplastic breast surgery (OBS), number of 2nd level OBS; total number of mastectomies, mastectomies without reconstruction, mastectomies with a tissue expander, mastectomies with direct to implant (DTI) reconstruction, mastectomies with immediate flap reconstruction; total number of delayed reconstructions, number of expanders to implant reconstructions, number of delayed flap reconstructions. Overall 20.684 patients were included: 10.850 (52.5%) operated during 2019, and 9.834 (47.5%) during 2020. The overall number of breast oncologic surgical procedures in all centers in 2020 was 8.509, compared to 9.383 in 2019 (− 9%). BCS decreased by 744 cases (− 13%), the overall number of mastectomies decreased by 130 cases (− 3.5%); mastectomy-BCS ratio was 39–61% in 2019, and 42–58% in 2020. Regarding immediate reconstructive procedures mastectomies with DTI reconstruction increased by 166 cases (+ 15%) and mastectomies with immediate expander reconstruction decreased by 297 cases (− 20%). Breast-delayed reconstructive procedures in all centers in 2020 were 142 less than in 2019 (− 10%). The outburst of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 determined an implemented number of mastectomies compared to BCS, an implemented number of immediate breast reconstructions, mainly DTI, and a reduction of expander reconstruction. Goals Of Work: The goal of this study was to describe the incidence of Clostridium difficile-associated disease (CDAD) in children with solid tumours.Patients and Methods: After documentation of a case of C. difficile-associated pseudomembranous colitis in a patient with neuroblastoma, the presence of C. difficile toxins A and B was prospectively tested in all children undergoing antineoplastic chemotherapy for solid tumours or lymphomas at the "G. Gaslini" Children Hospital in Genoa who presented abdominal pain.Main Results: From January 2005 to December 2006, nine (6%) out of 141 patients treated for solid tumours had C. difficile toxin A detected in their stools in the presence of abdominal symptoms including vomit, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. The majority of patients had a normal neutrophil count at onset of gastrointestinal disease No patient developed pseudomembranous colitis, and none died. All patients received antibiotics and/or antineoplastic drugs previously associated with CDAD.Conclusions: CDAD may be a complication of children with solid tumours. Since this disease may be life threatening and cause epidemic clusters, this possibility must be kept in mind for the differential diagnosis of abdominal diseases in children with cancer, especially in absence of neutropenia. Objectives: Adipose tissue is the most abundant and accessible source of adult stem cells. Human processed lipoaspirate contains pre-adipocytes that possess one of the a characteristic pathways of multipotent adult stem cells and are able to differentiate in vitro into mesenchymal and also neurogenic lineages. Because stem cells have great potential for use in tissue repair and regeneration, it would be significant to be able to obtain large amounts of these cells in vitro. As demonstrated previously, purine nucleosides and nucleotides mixtures can act as mitogens for several cell types. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of polydeoxyribonucleotides (PDRN), at appropriate concentrations, on human pre-adipocytes grown in a controlled medium, also using different passages, so as to investigate the relationship between the effect of this compound and cellular senescence, which is the phenomenon when normal diploid cells lose the ability to divide further. Materials and methods: Human pre-adipocytes were obtained by liposuction. Cells from different culture passages (P6 and P16) were treated with PDRN at different experimental times. Cell number was evaluated for each sample by direct counting after trypan blue treatment. DNA assay and the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide test were also carried out in all cases. Results and Conclusions: PDRN seemed to promote proliferation of human pre-adipocytes at both passages, but cell population growth increased in pre-adipocyte at P16, after 9 days as compared to control.
