To effectively prevent sport traumatic brain injury ( TBI), means of protection need to be designed and tested in relation to the reality of head impact. This study quantifies head impacts during a typical snowboarding accident to evaluate helmet standards. A snowboarder numerical model was proposed, validated against experimental data, and used to quantify the influence of accident conditions (speed, snow stiffness, morphology, and position) on head impacts (locations, velocities, and accelerations) and injury risk during snowboarding backward falls. Three hundred twenty-four scenarios were simulated: 70% presented a high risk of mild TBI (head peak acceleration >80 g) and 15% presented a high risk of severe TBI (head injury criterion >1000). Snow stiffness, speed, and snowboarder morphology were the main factors influencing head impact metrics. Mean normal head impact speed (28 ± 6 km/h) was higher than equivalent impact speed used in American standard helmet test ( ASTM F2040), and mean tangential impact speed, not included in standard tests, was 13.8 (±7 km/h). In 97% of simulated impacts, the peak head acceleration was below 300 g, which is the pass/fail criteria used in standard tests. Results suggest that initial speed, impacted surface, and pass/fail criteria used in helmet standard performance tests do not fully reflect magnitude and variability of snowboarding backward-fall impacts. Several glasses synthesized by sol-gel route and based on the BaO-B2O3-X-Al2O3-SiO2 (X = CaO, MgO) glass system have been investigated to evaluate their applicability as sealant for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). Chemical interactions with K41X stainless steel and hydrogen-tightness of these materials were evaluated after operations at high temperatures over 1,000 h in air atmosphere. Formation of a new phase at the steel-glass interface and formation of porosity in the glass were observed and determined as critical problems over mid-term operations. The role of MgO is important to obtain a gas-tight sealing. Application of the glass paste without binder addition was performed in order to avoid possible residual porosity related problems. The best glass was finally used as sealant between anodic and cathodic compartments in complete SOFCs operated at 760 and at 800 °C. Laser brazing is an effective process for joining of steel products widely applied in automobile industry on exposed parts, especially on two following targeted applications: roofs and hatchbacks. The obtaining of good quality joints requires an adequate understanding of interaction phenomena of the brazing filler with the steel surface. This study concerns the investigation of wetting and interfacial reactivity in Cu–Si brazing alloy/Zn-coated steel systems in order to identify how the coating influences the wettability and, consequently, the brazability of steel products. The wetting experiments are performed on hot-dip-galvanized and electro-galvanized coatings, as well as on bare steel. There are three competing conceptions concerning the relationship between positive illusions and mental health: the 'traditional' mental health model, according to which an accurate perception of the self and the world is a cornerstone of psychological well-adjustment; Taylor and Brown's Social Psychological Model on mental health, which assumes that positive illusions promote good mental health; and Baumeister's Optimal Margin Theory, which states that too much accuracy is harmful to mental health, as are exaggerated illusions. These three models were evaluated in the elderly ( n = 857 retirees ages 60-95) using the youthful bias, which is the illusion of being younger than one's real age. As a whole, the Social Psychological Model obtained the strongest support. Retirees who harboured an exaggerated youthful bias (more than 15 years) reported more satisfaction with leisure time, higher self-esteem, better perceived health, and less boredom proneness than those who felt as old as they were or who, except for perceived health, entertained a moderate youthful bias (between 1 and 15 years).
