Granivory can play a pivotal role in influencing regeneration, colonization as well as abundance and distribution of plants. Due to their high abundance, nutrient content and longevity, seeds are an important food source for many animals. Among insects, carabid beetles consume substantial numbers of seeds and are thought to be responsible for a significant amount of seed loss. However, the processes that govern which seeds are eaten and are therefore prevented from entering the seedbank are poorly understood. Here, we assess if DNA-based diet analysis allows tracking the consumption of seeds by carabids. Adult individuals of Harpalus rufipes were fed with seeds of Taraxacum officinale and Lolium perenne allowing them to digest for up to 3 days. Regurgitates were tested for the DNA of ingested seeds at eight different time points post-feeding using general and species-specific plant primers. The detection of seed DNA decreased with digestion time for both seed species, albeit in a species-specific manner. Significant differences in overall DNA detection rates were found with the general plant primers but not with the species-specific primers. This can have implications for the interpretation of trophic data derived from next-generation sequencing, which is based on the application of general primers. Our findings demonstrate that seed predation by carabids can be tracked, molecularly, on a species-specific level, providing a new way to unravel the mechanisms underlying in-field diet choice in granivores. This paper evaluates and discusses the quality of the stratospheric ozone analyses delivered in near real time by the MACC (Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate) project during the 3-year period between September 2009 and September 2012. Ozone analyses produced by four different chemical data assimilation (CDA) systems are examined and compared: the Integrated Forecast System coupled to the Model for OZone And Related chemical Tracers (IFS-MOZART); the Belgian Assimilation System for Chemical ObsErvations (BASCOE); the Synoptic Analysis of Chemical Constituents by Advanced Data Assimilation (SACADA); and the Data Assimilation Model based on Transport Model version 3 (TM3DAM). The assimilated satellite ozone retrievals differed for each system; SACADA and TM3DAM assimilated only total ozone observations, BASCOE assimilated profiles for ozone and some related species, while IFS-MOZART assimilated both types of ozone observations. All analyses deliver total column values that agree well with ground-based observations (biases < 5%) and have a realistic seasonal cycle, except for BASCOE analyses, which underestimate total ozone in the tropics all year long by 7 to 10%, and SACADA analyses, which overestimate total ozone in polar night regions by up to 30%. The validation of the vertical distribution is based on independent observations from ozonesondes and the ACE-FTS (Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment - Fourier Transform Spectrometer) satellite instrument. It cannot be performed with TM3DAM, which is designed only to deliver analyses of total ozone columns. Vertically alternating positive and negative biases are found in the IFS-MOZART analyses as well as an overestimation of 30 to 60% in the polar lower stratosphere during polar ozone depletion events. SACADA underestimates lower stratospheric ozone by up to 50% during these events above the South Pole and overestimates it by approximately the same amount in the tropics. The three-dimensional (3-D) analyses delivered by BASCOE are found to have the best quality among the three systems resolving the vertical dimension, with biases not exceeding 10% all year long, at all stratospheric levels and in all latitude bands, except in the tropical lowermost stratosphere. The northern spring 2011 period is studied in more detail to evaluate the ability of the analyses to represent the exceptional ozone depletion event, which happened above the Arctic in March 2011. Offline sensitivity tests are performed during this month and indicate that the differences between the forward models or the assimilation algorithms are much less important than the characteristics of the assimilated data sets. They also show that IFS-MOZART is able to deliver realistic analyses of ozone both in the troposphere and in the stratosphere, but this requires the assimilation of observations from nadir-looking instruments as well as the assimilation of profiles, which are well resolved vertically and extend into the lowermost stratosphere. Observing system simulation experiments (OSSEs) are performed to examine the impact of ozonesonde observations on a data assimilation system during a simulated satellite data gap during February 2003. Using the four-dimensional variational chemical data assimilation system SACADA, the relative influence of launch rates and station coverage is investigated. Starting with the VINTERSOL/MATCH campaign, different network and sounding configurations are evaluated. To quantify the performance of assimilation experiments in the lower stratosphere, analysis skill and linear pattern correlation with respect to ERA-Interim reference data are assessed for the 20 km altitude level. Using first-guess and analysis minus observation error statistics, a priori error settings are tuned to optimise the assimilation of simulated and real-world ozone soundings. In summary, it is found that, during satellite data gaps, ozonesonde data can have a significant positive impact on the mean analysis skill depending both on the number of observations and the network layout. A better distributed network based on the GAW system, with 28 stations and three soundings bi-weekly, proves clearly superior to VINTERSOL/MATCH, showing a positive gain in skill of 0.26 compared to a free-running model. An eight-year long reanalysis of atmospheric composition data covering the period 2003-2010 was constructed as part of the FP7-funded Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate project by assimilating satellite data into a global model and data assimilation system. This reanalysis provides fields of chemically reactive gases, namely carbon monoxide, ozone, nitrogen oxides, and formaldehyde, as well as aerosols and greenhouse gases globally at a horizontal resolution of about 80 km for both the troposphere and the stratosphere. This paper describes the assimilation system for the reactive gases and presents validation results for the reactive gas analysis fields to document the data set and to give a first indication of its quality. Tropospheric CO values from the MACC reanalysis are on average 10-20% lower than routine observations from commercial aircrafts over airports through most of the troposphere, and have larger negative biases in the boundary layer at urban sites affected by air pollution, possibly due to an underestimation of CO or precursor emissions. Stratospheric ozone fields from the MACC reanalysis agree with ozonesondes and ACE-FTS data to within ±10% in most seasons and regions. In the troposphere the reanalysis shows biases of -5% to +10% with respect to ozonesondes and aircraft data in the extratropics, but has larger negative biases in the tropics. Area-averaged total column ozone agrees with ozone fields from a multi-sensor reanalysis data set to within a few percent. NO2 fields from the reanalysis show the right seasonality over polluted urban areas of the NH and over tropical biomass burning areas, but underestimate wintertime NO2 maxima over anthropogenic pollution regions and overestimate NO2 in northern and southern Africa during the tropical biomass burning seasons. Tropospheric HCHO is well simulated in the MACC reanalysis even though no satellite data are assimilated. It shows good agreement with independent SCIAMACHY retrievals over regions dominated by biogenic emissions with some anthropogenic input, such as the eastern US and China, and also over African regions influenced by biogenic sources and biomass burning. An analysis of the severe weather event in November 2001 over the western Mediterranean is presented focusing on satellite-based trace gas measurements from the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME) on board the European Remote Sensing Satellite (ERS-2). This study is supplemented by a synoptic analysis and simulations of the three-dimensional stratospheric chemical transport model ROSE. Arctic air masses moved rapidly from Scandinavia to the Iberian peninsula and were mixed with subtropical air over the still warm Mediterranean Sea. This caused severe thunderstorms and extreme rainfall along the coasts of Morocco and Algeria and later on the Balearic Islands. Associated with the meridional transport an intrusion of stratospheric air below 3 km above sea level was observed. The maximum potential vorticity (PV) derived from UK Meteorological Office analysis data was about 9.3 potential vorticity units (pvu) at 330 K at the equatorward position of 35°N. These very high values went along with remarkably enhanced total ozone levels obtained from GOME backscatter measurements of collocated GOME/ERS-2 overpasses. Further investigation of GOME data showed unusually high levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) above the western Mediterranean. We present a new method to derive the tropospheric content of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) from a combination of satellite measurements and results of a chemical transport model. We show that about two-third of the total atmospheric content of nitrogen dioxide in the observed plume is found in the troposphere, due to lightning activity, advection and vertical transport in the thunderstorms from the planetary boundary layer (PBL) to atmospheric levels above clouds. Microstructural investigation of an as-cast Cu47.5Zr47.5Al5 bulk metallic glass (BMG) reveals two amorphous phases formed by liquid phase separation. The morphology of the phase separated amorphous regions is spherical with 10–20 nm in size. These areas are homogeneously distributed throughout the sample. Moreover, a macroscopic heterogeneity also occurs along with the nano-scale liquid phase separation. The macroscopic heterogeneity can be distinguished from the different degree of the chemical fluctuations in the sample, and the existence of nano-scale crystals of less than 5 nm in size. Presumably, both the macroscopic heterogeneity and the nano-scale phase separation enhance branching of the shear bands during deformation in the Cu47.5Zr47.5Al5 BMG. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

(Ti0.705Fe0.295)100-xSnx (x=0 and 3.85) ultrafine eutectics were prepared by slow cooling from the melt through cold crucible casting. The addition of 3.85 at. % Sn to the binary Ti–Fe eutectic decreases the strength slightly but considerably improves the plastic deformability under uniaxial compressive loading from [variant_greek_epsilon]f=2.1% to 9.6% strain to failure. The change in the morphology of the eutectic and the distribution of the FeTi phase are suggested as origin of the improvement of the mechanical properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The dendrites in the Ti66.1Cu8Ni4.8Sn7.2Nb13.9 nanostructure–dendrite composite deformed up to 25% reveal an interaction of primary and secondary shear bands. A detailed analysis of the lattice images of the interaction regions in the dendrites using high resolution transmission electron microscopy indicates local amorphization and lattice distortion/disordering near to the apex of the primary shear bands in the dendrite. Furthermore, moiré fringes are formed at the edge of the interaction regions between the primary and secondary shear bands suggesting gradual structural changes in the dendrites.
