Over the past five decades, the Fontan procedure has been developed to improve the life expectancy of patients with congenital heart defects characterized by a functionally single ventricle. The Fontan circulation aims at redirecting systemic venous return to the pulmonary circulation in the absence of an impelling subpulmonary ventricle, which makes this physiology quite fragile and leads to several long-term complications. Despite the importance of hemodynamic assessment through cardiac catheterization in the management and follow-up of these patients, a thorough understanding of the ultimate functioning of this type of circulation is lacking, and the interpretation of the hemodynamic data is often complex. In recent years, new tools such as combined catheterization with cardiopulmonary exercise testing have been incorporated to improve the understanding of the hemodynamic profile of these patients. Furthermore, extensive percutaneous treatment options have been developed, addressing issues ranging from obstructive problems in Fontan pathway and acquired shunts through compensatory collaterals to the percutaneous treatment of lymphatic circulation disorders and transcatheter edge-to-edge repair of atrioventricular valves. The aim of this review is to detail the various tools used in cardiac catheterization for patients with Fontan circulation, analyze different percutaneous treatment strategies, and discuss the latest advancements in this field. Background: Dyslipidemia is an imbalance of lipid profiles. It increases the chance of clogged arteries and may cause heart attacks, strokes, and other circulatory disorders. Dyslipidemia affects the general population, but its severity is higher in diabetic populations. As a result, the chance of dyslipidemia-associated morbidity and mortality is highest in diabetic patients. In Ethiopia, around 2 to 6.5% of the population live with diabetes, but their lipid profiles are inconsistent across the studies. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of diabetic dyslipidemia and its predictors among people with diabetes in Ethiopia. Method: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted. The searches were carried out in MEDLINE via PubMed and OVID, EBSCO, Embase, and other supplementary gateways such as Google and Google Scholar, for articles published up to June 2023. The articles were searched and screened by title (ti), abstract (ab), and full text (ft). The quality of the eligible studies was assessed by the Newcastle–Ottawa scale. The heterogeneity was detected by the Cochrane Q statistic test and the I-squared (I2) test. Then subgroup analysis and meta-regression analysis were used to identify the source of the variations. A random or fixed-effect meta-analysis model was used to estimate the overall pooled prevalence and average effects. The publication bias was assessed by the funnel plot asymmetry test and/or Begg and Mazumdar's test for rank correlation (p-value < 0.05). The protocol has been registered in an international database, the prospective register of systematic reviews (PROSPERO), with reference number CRD42023441572. Result: A total of 14 articles with 3662 participants were included in this review. The pooled prevalence of diabetic dyslipidemia in Ethiopia was found to be 65.7% (95% confidence interval (CI): 57.5, 73.9), I2 = 97%, and p-value < 0.001. The overall prevalence of triglycerides (TG) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) were found to be 51.8% (95% CI: 45.1, 58.6) and 44.2% (95% CI: 32.8, 55.7), respectively, among lipid profiles. In meta-regression analysis, the sample size (p value = 0.01) is the covariate for the variation of the included studies. Being female (adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 3.9, 95% CI: 1.5, 10.1), physical inactivity (AOR: 2.6, 95% CI: 1.5, 4.3), and uncontrolled blood glucose (AOR: 4.2, 95% CI: 1.9, 9.4) were found to be the determinants of dyslipidemia among diabetic patients. Conclusion: This review revealed that the prevalence of diabetic dyslipidemia is high among people with diabetes in Ethiopia. Being female, having physical inactivity, and having uncontrolled blood glucose were found to be predictors of dyslipidemia among people with diabetes. Therefore, regular screening of lipid profiles and the provision of lipid-lowering agents should be strengthened to reduce life-threatening cardiovascular complications. Based on participation of neurochemical compounds of brain, including neuroactive amine acids in regulation of cerebral circulation, in our previous study it was discovered the stimulating effects of new synthetized dipeptide - nicotinoyl prolin on impaired after ischemia brain blood flow. It was demonstrated, that nicotinoyl prolin increases local cerebral circulation in brain cortex without any changes from systemic blood pressure. The aim of presented study was to investigate the details of cerebrovascular activity of nicotinoyl prolin by evaluation of its effects on cerebrocortical microcirculation. In this purpose it was evaluated morphology changes on capillary network of brain cortex after acute ischemia, caused by left common carotid artery occlusion. Obtain results by non-injectional calcium adenosinetryphosphate method for evaluation of cerebrocortical capillary network density evident, that left common carotid artery occlusion is accompanied by noticeable decrease in mean diameter of all types of capillaries and the ratio of cortical network capillaries number with various diameter, which was prevented by intraperitoneal injection of nicotinoyl prolin in dose 10 mg/kg. Under the condition of acute disorder of cerebral blood circulation, caused by left common carotid artery occlusion, in animals treated by nicotinoyl prolin it was registered the increasing of mean diameter of all capillaries and number of functioning capillaries with simultaneous decreasing number of compressed and permeable only for plasma capillaries compare with ischemia. Thus, obtained data indicated, that one of the possible ways of brain blood flow stimulation by nicotinoyl prolin could be its ability to improve the disturbed during acute ischemia cerebral microcirculation. Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a common circulatory disorder characterized by the accumulation of fats, cholesterol, and other substances in the arteries that restrict blood flow to the extremities, especially the legs. The ankle brachial index (ABI) is a highly reliable and valid non-invasive test for diagnosing PAD. However, the traditional method has limitations. These include the time required, the need for Doppler equipment, the training of clinical staff, and patient discomfort. PWV refers to the speed at which an arterial pressure wave propagates along the arteries, and this speed is conditioned by arterial elasticity and stiffness. To address these limitations, we have developed a system that uses electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmography (PPG) signals to calculate pulse wave velocity (PWV). We propose determining the ABI based on this calculation. Validation was performed on 22 diabetic patients, and the results demonstrate the accuracy of the system, maintaining a margin of ±0.1 compared with the traditional method. A variety of circulatory disorders can be brought on by stenosis, which restricts a bodily passage artery or orifice. It may cause of brain disorders, heart diseases and legs disabilities. With the assistance of the Prandtl fluid model, the present investigation proposes an analytical strategy for monitoring blood flow through a stenosed artery. The artery is depicted as a tube with a cross-sectional view of an ellipse form. The flow-regulating equations are derived in the dimensionless form under the assumption of mild stenosis. The solution of mathematical equations is obtained by employing the perturbation technique via polynomial of degree four. It is analyzed graphically how flow-related parameters such as artery length L, stenosis height δ l , fluid parameters α , and K influence the velocity distribution, wall shear stress, and flow resistance. It is observed that the non-Newtonian effects dominate in the surrounding stenosed wall of the artery along the minor axis. The wall shear stress is found to attain its maximum value at the peak of stenosis. The height of stenosis considerably impacts the flow resistance, and as it increases, so does the opposition, which develops the disorder in the confined area. 1. Sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate (SDBS) is one of the surfactants used worldwide in detergents which, due to high residual discharges, has great potential to cause ecotoxicological impacts. Therefore, the sublethal effects of SDBS on the gills and skin of male Danio rerio fish were investigated. 2. The fish were distributed into three groups: GC (control), GT1 (0.25 mg/L of SDBS), and GT2 (0.5 mg/L of SDBS) and exposed for 21 days. After the experiment, histopathological analyses of the gills, histochemical analyses (counting of mucous cells), and biochemical analyses (antioxidant defense enzyme analysis, SOD, and CAT) were conducted. 3. A significant increase (p < 0.05) in the incidence of circulatory disorders, progressive, and regressive alterations occurred in the GT1 and GT2 groups. Due to these changes, the total histopathological index of the gills was higher in these groups. Mucous cells in the gills and skin increased. There was an increase in SOD activity and a reduction in CAT activity in these groups. Haematology revealed neutrophilia and lymphocytosis in the blood of GT1 and GT2. 4. Background: Studies suggest that distress is associated with various health conditions such as hypertension, asthma, diabetes, and coronary heart disease. However, only few studies focused on Asian Americans and little is known about the association with multiple comorbidity. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis among 400 Chinese and Korean American participants (aged 50–75 years) of the STOP CRC randomized controlled trial. Perceived distress was assessed using the distress thermometer scale (range 0–10). Disease diagnosis was self-reported by the participants. Multimorbidity (MM) was defined as having ≥2 chronic conditions. Complex multimorbidity (CMM) was defined as having ≥3 of the following body system disorders: circulation disorder, endocrine-metabolic disorder, cancer, anxiety or depression, breathing problem, and other health problems. We performed logistic regression for CMM and Poisson regression with robust error variance for MM to estimate associations with distress, adjusting for potential confounders. Results: The mean age was 58.4 years and mean distress score was 3.65. One-unit increase in distress score was associated with a 1.22-fold increase in the odds of having CMM (95% CI: 1.04–1.42). The magnitude of association slightly increased after additional adjustment for socioeconomic factors and health insurance status (OR: 1.29; 95% CI: 1.10–1.52). Higher distress score was positively associated with MM but the association was only marginally significant (PR: 1.04; 95% CI: 0.99–1.10), adjusting for socioeconomic factors and health insurance status. Conclusion: Our data suggest that higher perceived distress may be associated with simultaneous dysfunction of multiple distinct body systems among Chinese and Korean American older adults. This article discusses the results of a study on the use of balloon angioplasty for the treatment of recurrent aortic coarctation in children under one year of age. The study found that balloon angioplasty was a safe procedure with good results, reducing the peak-to-peak gradient and increasing the diameter of the stenosis. Re-coarctation was more common in patients with concomitant malformations. Complications occurred in 15.2% of cases, and 42.4% of patients required further cardiac catheter interventions. Background: Adherence to medication in chronic conditions may be influenced by interventions from pharmacists. This study aimed to assess the impact of guidance and reminders from pharmacists on adherence to medication for hypertension, dyslipidemia, and chronic venous circulation disorders (CVCD) in Greece.Methods: The prospective CONCORD study aimed to record and report on change in self-reported adherence to medication following pharmacist reminders amongst a cohort of adult patients, diagnosed with at least one or a combination of these health conditions. All study participants were regular patients of a network of pharmacies in Attica and southern Greece. Pharmacists were trained to provide adherence reminders over 4 months. Impact on self-reported adherence of the intervention was reported at baseline and again in month 4.Results: Of the 1146 participants, 48% were men and 60% were aged 55– 74 years. Among them, 23.7% were diagnosed with hypertension, 16.5% with dyslipidemia, 3% with CVCD, 42.5% with hypertension and dyslipidemia, 3.1% with hypertension and CVCD, 2.6% with dyslipidemia and CVCD, and 8.6% with dyslipidemia, hypertension, and CVCD. In month 4 vs month 0, patients were less likely to forget to take their prescribed medications (p< 0.001), to be careless about their medications during the last 30 days (p< 0.001), and to temporarily discontinue their medications without prior doctor's advice (p< 0.001). Patients with CVCD were more prone to lower self-reported adherence compared to patients who were not diagnosed with CVCD or a combination of conditions that included CVCD.Discussion: Reminders and advice from pharmacists resulted in higher adherence to medication amongst participants in month 4 versus month 0.Conclusion: Pharmacist-enabled interventions, including reminders and advice, following targeted training, may positively impact on patient medication adherence in chronic health conditions.Plain Language Summary: This study aimed to measure the impact of reminders and advice on adherence to medication provided by private pharmacists to patients with hypertension, dyslipidemia, and/or chronic venous circulation disorders (CVCD) in Greece. Early pressure injury (PI) progression is associated with multi-circulatory disorders and they interplay with each other, resulting in a lack of a satisfactory diagnostic method. We generated early PI and blanchable erythema hairless rat models. Transparent disc method and capillary refilling time test (CRTT) results were recorded with ultraviolet camera to capture the dynamics changes, and the blanching index and refilling index were set for comprehensive analysis. The deteriorated areas of early PI showed non-blanchable erythema (NBE) and an increase in erythema at 0.5 and 6 h with the transparent disc method. CRTT showed a marked refilling delay at 12 h. The comprehensive analysis of blanching index and refilling index showed a significant change in erythema from NBE at 0.5 h and ischemia progressing to hemorrhage at 18 h. There was also a marked difference in the deteriorating and improving areas within the same erythema. Pathological analysis showed inflammatory cell infiltration, with marked edema accompanied by increased hemorrhage and tissue necrosis. Furthermore, small arteries and veins with thrombosis and microthrombi were observed. Consistent ischemia after decompression and subsequent hemorrhage are important indicators, and comprehensive analysis can help increase the positive diagnosis rate over that for other circulatory disorders alone. Earthquakes are catastrophic natural disasters. Staying under rubble for a long time may cause compartment syndrome, especially in the extremities, and crush injuries due to severe trauma. In addition, frostbite injuries may occur due to extreme climate in the winter. In hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), patients breathe 100% oxygen in a closed chamber at pressures greater than 1 atmosphere absolute. HBOT provides elevated partial oxygen pressure, increased oxygen diffusion distance, decreased edema of the areas with circulatory disorder, augmented bactericidal effect, additive-synergistic effect with antibiotics, and enhanced wound healing. The effect of the toxic dose of the muscle relaxant baclofen on the parameters of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems was studied in adult male Wistar rats (n=20). Systolic and diastolic BP, HR, and respiratory rate were measured; histological changes in the lungs 3, 4.5, and 24 h after drug administration. Baclofen was administered orally in a sublethal toxic dose of 85 mg/kg under anesthesia. Cardiac activity was analyzed using RSM physiological indicators monitoring system with MouseMonitor S (Indus Instruments) software. Histological examination was performed by light microscopy. Baclofen significantly decreased the respiratory rate and increased HR and BP. Histological examination of the lungs revealed a complex of general pathological processes, such as local circulatory disorders (venular and capillary fullness, sludge), leukocyte infiltration of the interalveolar septa and their thickening due to edema. We studied the effect of long-term constant light exposure on the severity and reversibility of morphological changes in the liver of laboratory rats. Modeling of light exposure was carried out by means of 24 h exposure to artificial light (in the daytime—300 lk, at night—500 lk). During the study we found that morphological changes in the liver were represented by damage to the parenchyma and circulatory disorders, the degree of which increased with increasing duration of exposure. After providing natural light in the laboratory, gradual recovery of the morphological structure of the organ was observed, which indicates the reversibility of the changes detected. Background: Interrupting prolonged sitting acutely lowers blood pressure in nonstroke populations. However, the dose–response effect in stroke survivors is unknown. The authors investigated different doses of light-intensity standing exercises that interrupt prolonged sitting and reduce blood pressure immediately and over 24 hours in stroke survivors. Methods: Within-participant, laboratory-based, dose escalation trial. Conditions (8 h) were prolonged sitting and 2 experimental conditions of standing exercises with increasing frequency (3 cohorts, 2 × 5 min to 6 × 5 min). The primary outcome is the mean systolic blood pressure. Results: Twenty-nine stroke survivors (aged 66 [12] y) participated. Frequent bouts of standing exercises lowered the mean systolic blood pressure following the 4 × 5-minute (−2.1 mm Hg; 95% confidence interval [CI], −3.6 to −0.6) and 6 × 5-minute conditions (−2.3 mm Hg; 95% CI, −4.2 to −0.5) compared with prolonged sitting. Diastolic blood pressure was lowered following the 6 × 5-minute condition (−1.4 mm Hg; 95% CI, −2.7 to −0.2). The 24-hour systolic blood pressure increased following the 2 × 5-minute condition (6.9 mm Hg; 95% CI, 3.1 to 10.6). Conclusions: Interrupting prolonged sitting with more frequent bouts of standing exercises lowers systolic and diastolic blood pressure in stroke survivors. The pathology caused by three different isolates of lumpy skin disease virus, classical field cluster 1.2 strain Dagestan/2015, recombinant vaccine-like cluster 2.1 strain Saratov/2017, and cluster 2.2 strain Udmurtiya/2019, in cattle was compared from experimental infections. The infection of cattle was performed using intravenous administration of 2 mL of 105 TCID50/mL of each specific LSDV. Both classical and recombinant forms of LSDV cause pathological changes in the skin and lymph nodes, as well as the trachea and lungs. Due to circulatory disorders in the affected organs, multiple areas of tissue necrosis were observed, which, with the resurgence of secondary microflora, led to the development of purulent inflammation. Observed pathological changes caused by the recombinant vaccine-like strain Udmurtiya/2019 were characterized by a more pronounced manifestation of the pathoanatomical picture compared to the classical field strains Dagestan/2015 and Saratov/2017. Interestingly, Dagestan/2015 and Udmurtiya/2019 caused damage to the lymph nodes, characterized by serous inflammation and focal purulent lymphadenitis caused by purulent microflora. "Saratov/2017" did not cause pathology in the lymph nodes. All LSDVs were virulent and caused pathology, which was not distinguishable between viruses. Symptoms in the acute phase of Chagas disease are usually mild and nonspecific. However, after several years, severe complications like dilated heart failure and even death may arise in the chronic phase. Due to the lack of specific symptoms in the acute phase, the aim of this work was to describe and analyze the cardiac histopathology during this phase in a CD1 mouse model by assessing parasitism, fibrotic damage, and the presence and composition of a cellular infiltrate, to determine its involvement in the pathogenesis of lesions in the cardiac tissue. Our results indicate that the acute phase lasts about 62 days post-infection (dpi). A significant increase in parasitemia was observed since 15 dpi, reaching a maximum at 33 dpi (4.1 × 106). The presence of amastigote nests was observed at 15–62 dpi, with a maximum count of 27 nests at 35 dpi. An infiltrate consisting primarily of macrophages and neutrophils was found in the cardiac tissue within the first 30 days, but the abundance of lymphocytes showed an 8 ≥ fold increase at 40–62 dpi. Unifocal interstitial fibrosis was identified after 9 dpi, which subsequently showed a 16 ≥ fold increase at 40–60 dpi, along with a 50% mortality rate in the model under study. The increased area of fibrotic lesions revealed progression in the extent of fibrosis, mainly at 50–62 dpi. The presence of perivasculitis and thrombus circulation disorders was seen in the last days (62 dpi); finally, cases of myocytolysis were observed at 50 and 62 dpi. These histopathological alterations, combined with collagen deposition, seem to lead to the development of interstitial fibrosis and damage to the cardiac tissue during the acute phase of infection. This study provides a more complete understanding of the patterns of histopathological abnormalities involved in the acute phase, which could help the development of new therapies to aid the preclinical tests of drugs for their application in Chagas disease. (1) Introduction. Disorders of peripheral blood circulation affect people all around the world. Balneotherapy, in the form of carbonated mineral water baths and mofettes, could be considered one of the treatment options. The current study aims to investigate, in an experimental study, the effects of carbonated natural mineral water, with a known composition, and natural mofettes from Băile Tușnad (Romania) on peripheral arterial blood flow. (2) Material and method. A total of 16 rat subjects were studied, divided equally into 4 groups, all evaluated at 2, 4 and 6 weeks after the intervention. Group 1 was considered the control-group, and no treatment was applied. Group 2 was taken to the mofettes daily, for 2 weeks, for exposure to carbon dioxide, dry gas, for 20 minutes/day. Group 3 performed daily mofettes and baths with carbonated mineral water, for two weeks, 20 minutes/day, each procedure. Group 4 took a daily bath with carbonated mineral water, for 2 weeks, 20 min/day. At the end of the two-week treatment, they were evaluated by doppler ultrasound at the femoral artery, respectively at 2 and 4 weeks, to evaluate the effect over time of these treatments. Femoral artery diameter (mm), peak systolic velocity (PVS, cm/s), heart rate (HR, bpm) were quantitatively determined in all 4 groups, at 2, 4 and 6 weeks respectively, and ultrasound images were captured. (3) Results and discussions. In the control group, there were no differences at 2 weeks vs. 4 weeks vs. 6 weeks regardless of the studied parameter. The diameter of the femoral artery increased significantly in group 3 (mofetta and carbonated mineral water, p=0.0183), respectively in group 4 (mineral water p=0.007). Heart rate changed significantly p=0.0183 in the mofette group, as well as in the one treated with carbonated mineral water p= 0.024. The results of the study suggest that carbonated mineral water and mofettes were responsible for the changes in femoral artery flow, compared to the data from the control group. (4) Conclusions. Carbonated mineral water baths and mofettes could increase the peripheral arterial blood flow, during repeated immersion, and the results were beneficial 2 weeks after the end of the treatment, and were maintained after treatment at 4 and 6 weeks, respectively. Background: Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a common circulatory disorder associated with increased hospitalizations and significant health care-related expenditures. Among patients with PAD, insurance status is an important determinant of health care utilization, treatment of disease, and treatment outcomes. However, little is known about PAD-costs differences across different insurance providers. In this study we examined possible disparities in length of stay and total charge of inpatient hospitalizations among patients with PAD by insurance type. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of length of stay and total charge by insurance provider for all hospitalizations for individuals with PAD in South Carolina (2010–2018). Cross-classified multilevel modeling was applied to account for the non-nested hierarchical structure of the data, with county and hospital included as random effects. Analyses were adjusted for patient age, race/ethnicity, county, year of admission, admission type, all-patient refined diagnostic groups, and Charlson comorbidity index. Results: Among 385,018 hospitalizations for individuals with PAD in South Carolina, the median length of stay was 4 days (IQR: 5) and the median total charge of hospitalization was $43,232 (IQR: $52,405). Length of stay and total charge varied significantly by insurance provider. Medicare patients had increased length of stay (IRR = 1.08, 95 CI%: 1.07, 1.09) and higher total charges (β: 0.012, 95% CI: 0.007, 0.178) than patients with private insurance. Medicaid patients also had increased length of stay (IRR = 1.26, 95% CI: 1.24,1.28) but had lower total charges (β: -0.022, 95% CI: -0.003. -0.015) than patients with private insurance. Conclusions: Insurance status was associated with inpatient length of stay and total charges in patients with PAD. It is essential that Medicare and Medicaid individuals with PAD receive proper management and care of their PAD, particularly in the primary care settings, to prevent hospitalizations and reduce the excess burden on these patients. Red blood cell (RBC) deformability, expressing their ability to change their shape, allows them to minimize their resistance to flow and optimize oxygen delivery to the tissues. RBC with reduced deformability may lead to increased vascular resistance, capillary occlusion, and impaired perfusion and oxygen delivery. A reduction in deformability, as occurs during RBC physiological aging and under blood storage, is implicated in the pathophysiology of diverse conditions with circulatory disorders and anemias. The change in RBC deformability is associated with metabolic and structural alterations, mostly uncharacterized. To bridge this gap, we analyzed the membrane protein levels, using mass spectroscopy, of RBC with varying deformability determined by image analysis. In total, 752 membrane proteins were identified. However, deformability was positively correlated with the level of only fourteen proteins, with a highly significant inter-correlation between them. These proteins are involved in membrane rafting and/or the membrane–cytoskeleton linkage. These findings suggest that the reduction of deformability is a programmed (not arbitrary) process of remodeling and shedding of membrane fragments, possibly mirroring the formation of extracellular vesicles. The highly significant inter-correlation between the deformability-expressing proteins infers that the cell deformability can be assessed by determining the level of a few, possibly one, of them. Obesity is currently one of the most common metabolic disorders in the body. Experimental alimentary obesity leads to changes in the structural and functional organization of the liver, including disorders of blood circulation and lymph flow, the development of fatty degeneration in the parenchyma of the organ. The central links in the metabolism of proteins, lipids and carbohydrates take place in the liver, and it is also a barrier to all foreign substances entering the body. The problem of studying morphological changes in organs in obesity based on the effective use of medicinal plants as a means for the treatment and prevention of diseases is urgent. To assess the morphological changes in the liver in obesity, a natural medicinal plant "Frangula alnus" was used in the experiment. Changes in the structural organization of the liver are reflected in its functional state and the process of lipid metabolism. The article studies pathological changes in the activity of liver cells, which lead to a decrease in the detoxification function of the liver and destructive changes. Feeding rats with fatty food in combination with powder from the bark of the medicinal plant buckthorn "Frangula alnus" showed that the use of such a combination in the diet contributes to the normalization of morphological processes and restoration of the structural and functional organization of the rat liver. The multifunctional molecules mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) and a-ketoglutarate (aKG) are crucial players in the regulatory mechanisms that maintain cell homeostasis in an ever-changing environment. Cerebral ischemia is associated primarily with oxygen-glucose deficiency (OGD) due to circulatory disorders. Upon exceeding a threshold of resistance to OGD, essential pathways of cellular metabolism can be disrupted, leading to damage of brain cells up to the loss of function and death. This mini-review focuses on the role of mTOR and aKG signaling in the metabolic homeostasis of brain cells under OGD conditions. Integral mechanisms concerning the relative cell resistance to OGD and the molecular basis of aKG-mediated neuroprotection are discussed. Thoracoscopy is a minimally invasive imaging method used in the imaging of the thoracic cavity. In comparison with thoracotomy, thoracoscopy provides better visualization of even the smallest lesions localized in the thoracic cavity. With the use of thoracoscopy, the operation stress in the patient and tissue trauma are reduced, and operating time is shortened. The aim of this study was to evaluate 20 dogs with severe pericardial effusion, which manifested as severe circulation disorder and respiratory distress. The patients determined with pericardial effusion as a result of radiographic and echocardiographic examinations were applied with partial pericardiectomy to achieve permanent health and it was decided to apply this with the minimally invasive thoracoscopic method. The paraxiphoid-transdiaphragmatic approach was applied to the first ten patients and the intercostal approach to the latter. Applicability of thoracoscopic partial pericardiectomy, advantages compared to open surgery, differences between two approach techniques, disadvantages, complications, and success rates were evaluated. It was concluded that this procedure was a successful procedure for dogs and the transdiaphragmatic approach was more useful. In conclusion, thoracoscopic partial pericardiectomy was determined to be easy to apply and more advantageous than open thoracotomy operations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: The Flow Mediated Skin Fluorescence (FMSF) method, based on the observation of the fluorescence of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) coenzyme from skin tissue, allows for a non-invasive assessment of vascular circulation. The method characterizes dynamic changes in the NADH fluorescence caused by microcirculatory oscillations of endothelial, neurogenic or myogenic origin as well as those observed in response to the post-occlusive reactive hyperemia. It enables assessment of both vasoconstriction and vasodilation. The method defines three major parameters characterizing vascular circulation: reactive hyperemia response, hypoxia sensitivity and normoxia oscillatory index. The FMSF technique seems to be an optimal tool for characterizing macro- and micro-circulation status in a wide range of populations, from healthy physically active people to patients suffering from serious health problems related to vascular dysfunction. Flow Mediated Skin Fluorescence (FMSF) is a new non-invasive method for assessing vascular circulation and/or metabolic regulation. It enables assessment of both vasoconstriction and vasodilation. The method measures stimulation of the circulation in response to post-occlusive reactive hyperemia (PORH). It analyzes the dynamical changes in the emission of NADH fluorescence from skin tissue, providing the information on mitochondrial metabolic status and intracellular oxygen delivery through the circulatory system. Assessment of the vascular state using the FMSF technique is based on three parameters: reactive hyperemia response (RHR), hypoxia sensitivity (HS), and normoxia oscillatory index (NOI). The RHR and HS parameters determine the risk of vascular circulatory disorders and are the main diagnostic parameters. The NOI parameter is an auxiliary parameter for evaluating the state of microcirculation under stress of various origins (e.g., emotional stress, physical exhaustion, or post-infection stress). The clinical data show that the risk of vascular complications is limited among people whose RHR, log(HS), and NOI parameters are not significantly below the mean values determined by the FMSF technique, especially if they simultaneously meet the conditions RHR > 30% and log(HS) > 1.5 (HS > 30), and NOI > 60%. Lingxiaohua (Campsis Flos, Campsis grandiflora (Thunb.) K. Schum) is a medicinal herb used for promoting diuresis and treating blood-related disorders by the promotion of blood circulation. It also possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties. This non-poisonous plant is frequently confused with poisonous Yangjinhua (Daturae Metelis Flos, Datura metel Linnaeus) in the market, resulting in serious anticholinergic poisoning. The confusion of these two herbs is due to the similarity in their appearances. In our study, we compared the complete chloroplast genomes of the two plants and found that they are very different in terms of their gene content and gene arrangement. There were also significant differences in the number and repeating motifs of microsatellites and complex repeats. We used universal primers for the amplification of rbcL, matK, psbA-trnH, and ITS2 regions and successfully differentiated the two plants. Furthermore, we designed two pairs of primers based on the nucleotide differences in chloroplast genomes at the rps14 and rpoC1 regions to provide additional authentication markers. Aim of the study: We aimed to investigate the possible association between serum copeptin and complications of liver cirrhosis, including its potential role as a stress biomarker in spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP). Material and methods: This cross-sectional study included 89 cirrhotic ascitic patients (37 with SBP and 52 without SBP) admitted to Sohag University Hospitals, Egypt, between June 2021 and February 2022. Serum copeptin was measured in all patients, and its association with SBP and other complications of liver cirrhosis was investigated. Results: Serum copeptin was significantly elevated in patients with SBP compared to those without SBP (p = 0.032) and significantly correlated with ascitic fluid study parameters, systemic inflammatory markers, and liver, renal, and circulatory functions. Serum copeptin and C-reactive protein (CRP) were independent risk factors for the presence of SBP. Serum copeptin detects SBP at a cut-off value of 9 pmol/l, with sensitivity and specificity of 73% and 64%, respectively. Serum copeptin was significantly associated with hepatic encephalopathy, gastrointestinal bleeding, hepatorenal syndrome, and larger amounts of ascites. Conclusions: Serum copeptin is an independent risk factor for the presence of SBP and significantly increased in patients presented with major complications of liver cirrhosis, demonstrating its ability to reflect circulatory dysfunction and systemic inflammation. Placental villi play a vital role in human fetal development, acting as the bridge of material exchange between the maternal and fetal. The abnormal morphology of placental villi is closely related to placental circulation disorder and pregnancy complications. Revealing placental villi three-dimensional (3D) morphology of common obstetric complications and healthy pregnancies provides a new perspective for studying the role of the placenta and its villi in the development of pregnancy diseases. In this study, we established a noninvasive, high-resolution 3D imaging platform via optical coherence tomography to reveal placental villi 3D morphological information of diseased and normal placentae. For the first time, 3D morphologies of placental villous tree structures in common obstetric complications were quantitatively revealed and corresponding 3D information could visualize the morphological characteristics of the placental villous tree from a more intuitive perspective, providing helpful information to the study of fetal development, feto-maternal material exchange, and gestational complications treatment. Tendon-exposed wounds are complex injuries with challenging reconstructions and no unified treatment mode. Furthermore, insufficient tissue volume and blood circulation disorders affect healing, which increases pain for the patient and affects their families and caretakers. As modern medicine advances, considerable progress has been made in understanding and treating tendon-exposed wounds, and current research encompasses both macro-and micro-studies. Additionally, new treatment methods have emerged alongside the classic surgical methods, such as new dressing therapies, vacuum sealing drainage combination therapy, platelet-rich plasma therapy, and live-cell bioengineering. A case control study was undertaken to find a possible relationship of A,B,AB and O blood groups with scavenging enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase and antioxidant glutathione in patients with essential hypertension in the age group of 45 to 65 year and compared with normal healthy controls of the same age group. Thiobarbituric acid test was used for the estimation of lipid peroxide in plasma. Haemolysate was used for the assay of superoxide dismutase, catalase activity and glutathione concentration. The plasma lipid peroxide levels were increased significantly in all the hypertensive patients predominantly in group A and B. Concurrently significant decrease in the activities of scavenging enzymes and glutathione levels were found in these group patients. Accounting all the data together it is suggested that in comparison to blood group O, patients with blood group A, B and AB, possess specific blood group substances that may interfere in inducing required amount of superoxide dismutase and catalase with rapid depletion of red blood cell glutathione to counteract with free radical generation resulting in oxidative stress in them. Aim and Objective: The aim of this study is to find out the time onset of acute myocardial infarction in different times and relationship between myocardial infarction symptoms of patients. Background: Acute Myocardial Infarction is occurring because of sustained ischemia, causing irreversible myocardial cell death. Thrombus formation causes 80% to 90% of all acute myocardial infarction. Design: A quantitative, cross sectional study design. Methods: A study was conducted in coronary care unit on Acute Myocardial Infarction patient at Erbil Hospitals of Hawler, Rizgary and East Emergency Teaching Hospitals. This study was started from May, 2019 to October of 2019. Results: A non-probability convenience method used to recruit patients. Informal oral consent was obtained. Data was analysed through the Statistical Package for Science Service, V 20. Descriptive statistical analyses that was include. Frequency and percentage. The Inferential statistical data analysis through Chi-square and Fisher's Exact tests: used to find out the association between categorical variables. Probability of p-value and considered significant at the level of = 0.05. The researcher was collected the data through face to face interview after taking an agreement from patients and the samples were interviewed via one session about half an hour with protect patient trust and confidentially. Conclusions: The results of the study indicated that more than half of the study sample were had severe chest pain in the morning and nearly one third of them were had diaphoresis and shortness of breathing at night. Alemtuzumab is one of the most effective agents in the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS). On the other hand, the spectrum of possible side effects is wide and carries the potential to cause a variety of inflammatory and thrombotic complications. In this report firstly, a case who developed a systemic thrombotic and inflammatory response after alemtuzumab administration and then presented with pretibial edema in a period of 1 month is discussed. Then, based on the findings detected via this case, the possible side effects of alemtuzumab, both during drug infusion and in the early and late periods after administration, were classified. This classification was created by compiling the reported adverse effects in the literature related to the use of alemtuzumab for the treatment of multiple sclerosis. This presented case shows that prothrombotic predisposition after alemtuzumab administration may result in peripheral microvascular circulatory disorders even in the long term and one of them is pretibial edema. According to the current literature data, side effects of alemtuzumab treatment which is used for multiple sclerosis are categorized as follows: (i) infusion‐related reactions, (ii) acute/subacute inflammatory and pro‐thrombotic effects, (iii) immunosuppression‐related opportunistic infections, (iv) immune reconstitution‐related secondary autoimmune disorders. Increasing awareness of the possible side effects of alemtuzumab treatment used in the course of multiple sclerosis will enable both the development of possible prophylactic treatment options and the early control of emerging complications. To determine the success rate of primary microsurgical treatment of both cranial and spinal dural arteriovenous fistulas (cdAVFs and sdAVFs). Data of 40 consecutive patients (mean age, 64.5 years; range, 35–88 years) who underwent microsurgical treatment for a diagnosed cdAVF/sdAVF at a single academic institution were retrospectively obtained. General patient information, such as age on the day of surgery and sex, patient charts, admission protocols, operating reports, and discharge protocols were reviewed. Outcomes, including modified Rankin Scale (mRS) scores and the rate of complete occlusion confirmed by a postoperative angiography were analyzed. The overall post-treatment occlusion rate was 100% in sdAVFs and 92% in cdAVFs. The most common presentation of cdAVFs was intracerebral hemorrhage (67%), followed by headache (53%) and vertigo (33%). The main symptoms of sdAVFs were sensory deficits, paresis, gait abnormalities, and incontinence. Additional endovascular treatment after primary surgery was needed in seven (47%) patients with cdAVF and one patient (4%) with sdAVF. All sdAVFs were classified as Cognard grade V, while six (40%) cdAVFs were Cognard grade III, eight (54%) were grade IV and one (6%) was grade V. Complications included cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) fistulas, CSF circulation disorders, meningitis, and epidural and intracerebral hemorrhages. Furthermore, sdAVF showed higher rates of clinical improvement than cdAVF (56% vs. 47%). Microsurgery resulted in complete occlusion in most cases of sdAVFs. However, additional endovascular treatment was necessary in nearly 50% of patients with cdAVF. Therefore, combined treatment in cranial cdAVF seems to be the desired strategy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This pharmaceutical ethnobotanical research was carried out in Taşköprü District in Kastamonu, in northern Anatolia. It assembles the elaborations of plants used as folk medicines, and the ethnopharmacological data collected in the course of in-person semi-structured interviews with an open-ended questionnaire. The study's aims were two-fold: gathering and identifying plants that the local inhabitants use therapeutically, and recording information related to traditional folk medicine (primarily for humans, and if extant for animals). The plants were gathered during several outings between May 2016 and July 2018. The organization of the data was based on the usereports (UR) and was done according to the ICPC-2 classification. In addition, cultural importance index (CI) and informant consensus factor (FIC) calculations were made for the data collected. The research identified 101 plant taxa of 31 families used in folk medicine. Of these, 89 were wild and 12 were cultivated taxa. In total, 499 medicinal uses were determined. The CI values indicated that the most significant medicinal plant specimens were Pinus nigra subsp. pallasiana (0.78), P. sylvestris var. hamata (0.75) and Plantago lanceolata, P. major subsp. intermedia and P. major subsp. major (0.58 each). The most prevalent families were Asteraceae (2.14), Rosaceae (1.93), Pinaceae (1.81) and Plantaginaceae (1.74). Respiratory system (0.95), skin and subcutaneous tissue (0.94), nervous system (0.92) and circulatory system disorders (0.88) and ethnoveterinary uses (0.89) had the highest FIC values. The most frequently used preparation process was observed to be decoction (38.4%) and the most commonly utilized plant parts were aerial (21%). Along with recording 20 plant taxa as medicinal plants for the first time, this study documented a total of 303 new therapeutic uses. Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a major adverse event of primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) from the patient's perspective, and it is also costly for health care systems. In 2010, the reported incidence of PJI in the first 2 years after TKA was 1.55%, with an incidence of 0.46% between the second and tenth year. In 2022, it has been published that 1.41% of individuals require revision TKA for PJI. The following risk factors have been related to an increased risk of PJI: male sex, younger age, type II diabetes, obesity class II, hypertension, hypoalbuminemia, preoperative nutritional status as indicated by prognostic nutritional index (PNI) and body mass index, rheumatoid arthritis, post-traumatic osteoarthritis, intra-articular injections prior to TKA, previous multi-ligament knee surgery, previous steroid therapy, current tobacco use, procedure type (bilateral), length of stay over 35 days, patellar resurfacing, prolonged operative time, use of blood transfusions, higher glucose variability in the postoperative phase, and discharge to convalescent care. Other reported independent risk factors for PJI (in diminishing order of importance) are congestive heart failure, chronic pulmonary illness, preoperative anemia, depression, renal illness, pulmonary circulation disorders, psychoses, metastatic tumor, peripheral vascular illness, and valvular illness. Preoperative intravenous tranexamic acid has been reported to diminish the risk of delayed PJI. Knowing the risk factors for PJI after TKA, especially those that are avoidable or controllable, is critical to minimizing (ideally preventing) this complication. Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) is caused by a blood circulation disorder of the arteries and Critical Limb Ischemia (CLI) is the advanced state of PVD. For patients with surgically non-reconstructable CLI, Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) appears to be an alternative therapeutic option. The aim of our study was to investigate the efficacy of SCS in non-reconstructable CLI compared with the conservative treatment and re-appraise the existing literature in light of the recent advances in neuromodulation. We conducted a systematic review based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, using electronic databases and reference lists for article retrieval. A total of 404 records were identified and finally 6 randomised controlled trials (RCTs), a Cochrane review and a meta-analysis were included in our systematic review. The studies assessed the efficacy of tonic SCS in the treatment of patients with non-reconstructable CLI compared with the conservative treatment. There is moderate to high quality evidence suggesting, that tonic SCS has beneficial effects for patients suffering from non-reconstructable CLI in terms of limb salvage, pain relief, clinical improvement and quality of life. The contradictory conclusions of the two meta-analyses regarding the efficacy of SCS for limb salvage at 12 months refer rather to the magnitude of the beneficial effect than to the effect itself. So far, the current literature provides evidence about the traditional tonic SCS but there is a lack of studies investigating the efficacy of new waveforms in the treatment of non-reconstructable CLI. SCS represents an alternative for PVD patients with non-reconstructable CLI and the existing literature provides encouraging clinical results, that should not be neglected. Acute circulatory collapse is one of the most familiar challenges in ICUs. It is considered that artefacts generated by lung ultrasound (LUS) can help in diagnosis and management. FALLS-protocol using LUS is a tool proposed for the management of unexplained shock. Objectives To investigate the role of LUS FALLS-protocol in differentiating types of shock in critically ill patients. Patients and methods A total of 50 patients presented with undiagnosed shock. Fast bedside echocardiography and LUS FALLS-protocol were applied along with inferior vena cava diameter and collapsibility measurement. Results A total of 19 patients with septic shock on presentation had A profile in all of themand AB profile in three of them, and after resuscitation, they were transformed to B profile with 100% sensitivity, 90.5% specificity, 90.5% positive predictive value (PPV), and 100% negative predictive value (NPV). Overall, 16 patients with hypovolemic shock had A profile in all of them on presentation and after resuscitation, with 100% sensitivity, 94.1% specificity, 88.9% PPV, and 100% NPV. Moreover, eight patients with cardiogenic shock had B profile in all of them on presentation with 100% sensitivity, 95.2% specificity, 80% PPV, and 100% NPV; three patients with obstructive shock had A profile in all of them on presentation, with 100% sensitivity, 25.5% specificity, 7.9% PPV, and 100% NPV; and two patients with anaphylactic shock had A profile in all of them on presentation and transformed to B profile after resuscitation with 100% sensitivity, 50% specificity, 9.5% PPV, and 100% NPV. Our findings showed preference of FALLS-protocol than inferior vena cava diameter and collapsibility in directing fluid therapy. Valeriana jatamansi is hired as multiple remedies for treatment of insomnia, blood and circulatory disorders, asthma, dry cough, jaundice, seminal weakness, cardiac debility, and skin diseases in Vietnam. Our research discovered the phytochemical investigation of constituents from this herbal medicine resulted in the isolation of two new compounds (jatamansides A (4) and B (7)) together with 16 known ones from the whole plant. Their structures were established by using spectroscopic techniques (multinuclear and multidimensional nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, ultraviolet–visible), mass spectrometry, hydrolysis analysis, or comparing their NMR data to those reported in the literature. Objective  The study aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of obtaining preoperative type and screens (T/S) for common endonasal skull base procedures, and determine patient and hospital factors associated with receiving blood transfusions. Study Design  Retrospective database analysis of the 2006 to 2015 National (nationwide) Inpatient Sample and cost-effectiveness analysis. Main Outcome Measures  Multivariate regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with transfusions. A cost-effectiveness analysis was then performed to determine the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) of obtaining preoperative T/S to prevent an emergency-release transfusion (ERT), with a willingness-to-pay threshold of $1,500. Results  A total of 93,105 cases were identified with an overall transfusion rate of 1.89%. On multivariate modeling, statistically significant factors associated with transfusion included nonelective admission (odds ratio [OR]: 2.32; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.78–3.02), anemia (OR: 4.42; 95% CI: 3.35–5.83), coagulopathy (OR: 4.72; 95% CI: 2.94–7.57), diabetes (OR: 1.45; 95% CI: 1.14–1.84), liver disease (OR: 2.37; 95% CI: 1.27–4.43), pulmonary circulation disorders (OR: 3.28; 95% CI: 1.71–6.29), and metastatic cancer (OR: 5.85; 95% CI: 2.63–13.0; p  < 0.01 for all). The ICER of preoperative T/S was $3,576 per ERT prevented. One-way sensitivity analysis demonstrated that the risk of transfusion should exceed 4.12% to justify preoperative T/S. Conclusion  Routine preoperative T/S does not represent a cost-effective practice for these surgeries using nationally representative data. One possible way to improve the effectiveness of the primary prevention of AH is to identify and control the preclinical orthostatic disturbances that precede the development of AH. The aim of the study was to determine the feasibility of a new protocol for the head-up tilt test (HUTT) with a standardized hydrostatic column height for the detection of asymptomatic orthostatic circulatory disorders and their racial differences in young African and European adults. Methods. In total, 80 young healthy adults (40 African and 40 European) aged 20–23 years performed the HUTT with a standardized hydrostatic column height of 133 cm. The hemodynamic parameters were recorded using a Task Force Monitor (3040i). The cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) was measured using a VaSera VS-2000 volumetric sphygmograph. Results. The baseline and orthostatic hemodynamic changes in both racial groups were within normal limits. Orthostatic circulatory disturbances were not detected in 70% of the European participants and 65% of the African participants; however, preclinical orthostatic hypertension, which precedes AH, was detected using the new HUTT protocol in 32.5% of the African participants and 20% of the European participants. The baseline CAVI was higher in the European group compared to the African group. Conclusion. The results of this study showed the feasibility of the detection of preclinical orthostatic disturbances in young adults and the detection of their racial differences using the HUTT protocol, providing the use of a standard gravity load. Background: Neuroinflammation plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis and progression of various neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease. The Ginkgo biloba leaf extract (GBE) has been widely used to treat cerebral and peripheral blood circulation disorders. However, its potential targets and underlying mechanisms regarding neuroinflammation have not yet been characterized. Aims: The purpose of this study was to investigate and validate the anti-neuroinflammatory properties of GBE against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-mediated inflammation and to determine the underlying molecular mechanisms. Methods: The effect of GBE on LPS-induced release of inflammatory cytokines was examined using ELISA and western blot assay. The effects of GBE on NF-κB binding activity and translocation were determined via luciferase, streptavidin-agarose pulldown, and immunofluorescence assays. The potential targets of GBE were screened from the GEO and microRNA databases and further identified via qPCR, luciferase, gene mutation, and western blot assays. Results: GBE significantly inhibited LPS-induced pro-inflammatory responses in BV-2 and U87 cells, with no obvious cytotoxicity. GBE significantly induced miR- 146b-5p expression, which negatively regulated TRAF6 expression by targeting its 3'-UTR. Thus, due to TRAF6 suppression, GBE decreases the transcriptional activity of NF-κB and the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and cyclooxygenase (COX)-2, and finally reverses LPS-induced neuroinflammation. Conclusion: Our study revealed the anti-neuroinflammatory mechanism of GBE through the miR-146b-5p/TRAF6 axis and provided a theoretical basis for its rational clinical application. The extraordinary situation of the 2019–2022 pandemic caused a dramatic jump in the incidence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD is currently regarded not only as a neuropsychiatric disorder, but also as a comorbidity accompanied by cardiovascular diseases, circulatory disorders, liver dysfunction, etc. The relationship between behavioral disorders and the degree of morphofunctional changes in the liver remains obscure. In this study, PTSD was modeled in sexually mature male Wistar rats using predatory stress induced by a prey's fear for a predator. Testing in an elevated plus maze allowed the rat population to be divided into animals with low-anxiety (LAP) and high-anxiety (HAP) phenotypes. It was found that morphofunctional analysis of the liver, in contrast to its biochemical profiling, provides a clearer evidence that predatory stress induces liver dysfunction in rats of both phenotypes. This may indicate a decrease in the range of compensatory adaptive reactions in stressed animals. However, in HAP rats, the level of morphofunctional abnormalities in the mechanisms responsible for carbohydrate-fat, water-electrolyte and protein metabolism in the liver testified the prenosological state of the organ, while further functional loading and resulting tension of the regulatory systems could lead to homeostatic downregulation. Meanwhile, the liver of LAP animals was only characterized by insignificant diffuse changes. Brain injury causes temporary or permanent impairment of brain function due to an accident or circulation disorders. Even after rehabilitation training, there are often persistent functional impairments. Recent advances in our understanding of the repair mechanisms of neural circuits after brain injury have led to the possibility that these mechanisms may offer potential therapeutic targets for drugs that promote functional recovery after brain injury. Neuroplasticity is believed to be important for the recovery process after brain injury in the brain regions associated with injured region for compensation. The effectiveness of drugs for restoring brain function after stroke investigated in a variety of animal models and clinical trials has been focused on drugs that act on the monoamine system to modulate neuroplasticity, as well as other targets such as NMDA receptors and CCR5. Recently, we focused on novel small compound, edonerpic maleate, as a drug which facilitates experience-dependent synaptic delivery of AMPA receptor. We found that edonerpic maleate binds to Collapsin-response mediator protein 2, a downstream molecule of Semaphorin and enhance synaptic plasticity by facilitating synaptic delivery of AMPA receptors, thereby promoting functional recovery in a rehabilitation-dependent manner after brain injury in rodents and non-human primates. Further investigations is needed to seek more appropriate drug targets from both preclinical animal studies and clinical trials, and to translate preclinical results into successful clinical trials. Background: Height has been associated with many clinical traits but whether such associations are causal versus secondary to confounding remains unclear in many cases. To systematically examine this question, we performed a Mendelian Randomization-Phenome-wide association study (MR-PheWAS) using clinical and genetic data from a national healthcare system biobank. Methods and findings: Analyses were performed using data from the US Veterans Affairs (VA) Million Veteran Program in non-Hispanic White (EA, n = 222,300) and non-Hispanic Black (AA, n = 58,151) adults in the US. We estimated height genetic risk based on 3290 height-associated variants from a recent European-ancestry genome-wide meta-analysis. We compared associations of measured and genetically-predicted height with phenome-wide traits derived from the VA electronic health record, adjusting for age, sex, and genetic principal components. We found 345 clinical traits associated with measured height in EA and an additional 17 in AA. Of these, 127 were associated with genetically-predicted height at phenome-wide significance in EA and 2 in AA. These associations were largely independent from body mass index. We confirmed several previously described MR associations between height and cardiovascular disease traits such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, coronary heart disease (CHD), and atrial fibrillation, and further uncovered MR associations with venous circulatory disorders and peripheral neuropathy in the presence and absence of diabetes. As a number of traits associated with genetically-predicted height frequently co-occur with CHD, we evaluated effect modification by CHD status of genetically-predicted height associations with risk factors for and complications of CHD. We found modification of effects of MR associations by CHD status for atrial fibrillation/flutter but not for hypertension, hyperlipidemia, or venous circulatory disorders. Conclusions: We conclude that height may be an unrecognized but biologically plausible risk factor for several common conditions in adults. However, more studies are needed to reliably exclude horizontal pleiotropy as a driving force behind at least some of the MR associations observed in this study. Using data from the VA Million Veteran Program that includes genetic data linked to clinical records in >200,000 non-Hispanic White adults and >50,000 non-Hispanic Black adults, we examined associations of measured height and genetically-predicted height with clinical traits phenome-wide. By comparing associations of traits with measured and with genetically-predicted height, we aimed to discriminate between potentially causal associations (those associated with genetically-predicted height) from associations that may be confounded by environmental exposures over the life course (those associated with measured height but not with genetically-predicted height). Of approximately 350 traits associated with measured height, we found 127 associated with genetically-predicted height in non-Hispanic White individuals. While only 2 were also statistically significant in non-Hispanic Black individuals, we found evidence for consistent directions of effect for associations of traits with genetically-predicted height in non-Hispanic Black and White individuals. In Japan, which has entered a super-aging society, changes in the disease structure and an increase in the number of people requiring long-term care are problems. In recent years, the relationship between systemic diseases and oral diseases such as periodontal disease has become a social problem. In this study, we focused on the microcirculation, which play a key role in the onset and pathophysiology of various lifestyle-related diseases, and investigated the circulatory disorders of the brain and oral cavity caused by aging. Aged male rats (F344/Jcl, 22-months-old) were used in this study. To perform morphological analysis of blood vessels, resin cast model was prepared, and blood vessels around the brain and periodontal tissue were observed with a scanning electron microscope. Motor function was analyzed using an open-field test. Functional analysis in angiogenesis was performed by measuring blood and salivary concentrations of VEGF by ELISA. In the experimental group, the vascular loop in the gingival tissue was poor, and the blood vessels showed distorted morphology. Furthermore, in the open-field test, the number of entries into the center-area was significantly lower, and the total distance traveled tended to be shorter. The saliva and blood VEGF tended to be high in the experimental group. Consequently, this study found that the motor function was decreased in the aged rat, and that the microcirculation in the periodontal tissue and the brain was poor. Therefore, it was possible to confirm the disorder of the systemic function and the microcirculation associated with aging. In the future, we will improve the decline in motor function and impaired microcirculation, examine the relationship between the whole body and the oral cavity, and analyze what kind of effect it will have on the improvement and prevention of diseases. Recent years have seen a resurgence of interest from both the industry and research community in Datalog. Datalog is a declarative query language that extends relational algebra with recursion. It has been used to express a wide spectrum of modern data management tasks, such as data integration, declarative networking, graph analysis, business analytics, and program analysis. The result of this long line of research is a plethora of Datalog engines, which support different variants of Datalog, and have different technical specifications and capabilities. In this monograph, we provide an overview of the architecture and technical characteristics of these Datalog engines. We identify common architectural decisions and evaluation methods, as well as data structures and layouts used to speed up the query execution. We also discuss in what ways Datalog engines differ when they specialize to workloads with different characteristics (for example, data analytics vs program analysis vs graph analysis).
