Sexual conflicts and their evolutionary outcomes may be influenced by population- specific features such as mating system and ecological context; however, very few studies have investigated the link between sexual conflict and mating system. The self-compatible, mixed-mating hermaphrodite Collinsia heterophylla (Plantaginaceae) is thought to exhibit a sexual conflict over timing of stigma receptivity. This conflict involves (i) delayed stigma receptivity, which intensifies pollen competition, and (ii) early fertilization forced by pollen, which reduces seed set. We investigated the potential for the conflict to occur under field conditions and performed glasshouse crosses within eight populations to assess its consistency across populations. Flowers were visited, and produced seeds after pollination, at all developmental stages, suggesting that the conflict can be of significance under natural conditions. In the glasshouse, early pollination imposed costs in all populations. Overall, the timing of first seed set was most strongly affected by the maternal parent, denoting stronger female than male ability to influence the onset of stigma receptivity. Crosses also revealed a negative relationship between donor- and recipient-related onset of receptivity within individuals, a novel result hinting at trade-offs in sex allocation or a history of antagonistic selection. Neither timing of stigma receptivity, timing of first seed set, nor pollen competitive ability covaried with population outcrossing rate. In conclusion, these results indicate that sexually antagonistic selection may be present in varying degrees in different populations of C. heterophylla, but this variation does not appear to be directly related to mating system variation. We tested two predictions of the hypothesis that competition between self-pollen may mitigate negative genetic effects of inbreeding in plants: (1) intense competition among self-pollen increases offspring fitness; and (2) pollen competition reduces the measured strength of inbreeding depression. We used Collinsia heterophylla (Plantaginaceae), an annual with a mixed mating system, to perform controlled crosses in which we varied both the size of the pollen load and the source of pollen (self vs. outcross). Fitness of selfed offspring was higher in the high pollen-load treatment. Our second prediction was also upheld: inbreeding depression was, on average, lower when large pollen loads were applied (11%) relative to the low pollen-load treatment (28%). The reduction was significant for two fitness components relatively late in the life-cycle: number of surviving seedlings and pollen-tube growth rate in vitro. These findings suggest that intermittent inbreeding, which leads to self-fertilization in plants with genetic loads, may select for traits that enhance pollen competition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The repeated evolution of fused carpels (syncarpy) is one of the dominant features of angiosperm macroevolution. We present results of new phylogenetic and theoretical analyses to assess the frequency and nature of transitions to syncarpy, and the possible advantages of syncarpy over apocarpy under a variety of ecological conditions. Using a recent molecular estimate of angiosperm phylogeny, we ascertained that a minimum of 17 independent evolutionary transitions from apocarpy to syncarpy have occurred; about three-quarters of these transitions allowed pollen tubes to cross between carpels and fertilize ovules that would otherwise be left unfertilized. Most of these transitions also intensified competition between pollen, potentially enhancing offspring fitness. The high proportion of evolutionary transitions promoting pollen competition and pollen-tube access to all carpels supports the hypothesis that the main advantage of syncarpy is in increasing offspring quality and quantity. The potential advantages of syncarpy were more thoroughly evaluated by analytical and simulation studies. These showed that the advantage of syncarpy over apocarpy involving increased offspring-quantity held under conditions of marginal pollination and declined with increasing pollination. Darwin recognized that biological diversity has accumulated as a result of both adaptive and nonadaptive processes. Very few studies, however, have addressed explicitly the contribution of nonadaptive processes to evolutionary diversification, and no general procedures have been established for distinguishing between adaptive and nonadaptive processes as sources of trait diversity. I use the diversification of flower colour as a model system for attempting to identify adaptive and nonadaptive causes of trait diversification. It is widely accepted that variation in flower colour reflects direct, adaptive response to divergent selective pressures generated by different pollinators. However, diversification of flower colour may also result from the effects of nonadaptive, pleiotropic relationships with vegetative traits. Floral pigments that have pleiotropic relationships to vegetative pigments may evolve and diversify in at least two nonadaptive ways. (1) Indirect response to selection on the pleiotropically related nonfloral traits may occur (indirect selection). (2) Divergent evolution in response to parallel selective pressures (e.g. selection by pollinators for visually obvious flowers) may occur because populations are at different genetic starting points, and each population follows its own genetic `line of least resistance.' A survey of literature suggests that pleiotropic relationships between flower colour and vegetative traits are common. Phylogenetically informed analyses of comparative data from Dalechampia (Euphorbiaceae) and Acer (Aceraceae), based on trait-transition probabilities and maximum likelihood, indicated that floral and vegetative pigments are probably pleiotropically related in these genera, and this relationship better explains the diversification of floral colour than does direct selection by pollinators.
