With so much confusion around use case modeling, software developers may be reluctant to apply it. However, use cases are easy to apply and have great benefits even in research settings with nonprofessional software developers involved. We report on our experience on this within an innovative tourist information system developed in a research setting of an ongoing Horizon 2020 project named Promotion of Rural Museums and Heritage Sites in the Vicinity of European Pilgrimage Routes (rurAllure). The resulting use case model comprises forty use cases supported by class diagrams, use case diagrams, sequence diagrams, as well as by the domain model and dictionary. Three quarters of use cases have been implemented at least to some extent. Writing use cases provoked intense communication, which helped consolidate the system architecture. The use cases helped validate and better understand the GUI form wireframes designed beforehand and get quickly to a consistent implementation of the system that can be experimented with further in different ways. Finally, the forthcoming extensive system and user experience testing will be guided by the use case model. The paper also exposes the domain model and dictionary along with selected use cases and the hierarchy of user and system actors, which may be useful as such or as a stimulus for the development of other innovative tourist information systems. Most of the therapeutic systems developed for managing chronic skin wounds lack adequate mechanical and hydration properties, primarily because they rely on a single component. This study addresses this issue by combining organic and inorganic materials to obtain hybrid films with enhanced mechanical behavior, adhesion, and fluid absorption properties. To that aim, chitosan/hydrolyzed collagen blends were mixed with halloysite/antimicrobial nanohybrids at 10% and 20% (w/w) using glycerin or glycerin/polyethylene glycol-1500 as plasticizers. The films were characterized through the use of Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and electron microscopy. The mechanical properties were evaluated macroscopically using tensile tests, and at a nanoscale through atomic force microscopy (AFM) and nanoindentation. Thermodynamic studies were conducted to assess their hydrophilic or hydrophobic character. Additionally, in vitro cytocompatibility tests were performed on human keratinocytes. Results from FTIR, TGA, AFM and electron microscopy confirmed the hybrid nature of the films. Both tensile tests and nanomechanical measurements postulated that the nanohybrids improved the films' toughness and adhesion and optimized the nanoindentation properties. All nanohybrid-loaded films were hydrophilic and non-cytotoxic, showcasing their potential for skin wound applications given their enhanced performance at the macro- and nanoscale. Strawberries in California are grown in specific coastal areas where land is scarce and climate change threatens future production. Strawberry growers are under pressure to adopt sustainable production strategies such as crop rotation, but this practice requires more land than back-to-back planting. The objectives of this research were to quantify the rate of crop rotation across the three main strawberry producing regions in California (Ventura, Santa Maria, and Monterey Bay), and evaluate geographic and edaphic influences on crop rotation. All strawberry fields in the main strawberry producing regions of California were identified by satellite imagery and manual inspection for the years 2017 through 2022. ArcGIS Pro was used to outline each strawberry field and compare among years to determine the period between successive strawberry plantings. Edaphic characteristics and shapefiles for surrounding fields were retrieved from public datasets. The three regions significantly differed in their rates of crop rotation. On average, 95, 52, and 25% of strawberry hectares were rotated each year in the Monterey Bay, Santa Maria, and Ventura regions, respectively. Shorter rotation lengths were associated with reduced distance from the ocean and soil with a higher percentage of sand. Based on 2 years of disease surveys, fields infested with Macrophomina phaseolina tended to be further inland than fields infested with Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. fragariae in the Monterey Bay region. This study determined that distance from the ocean and soil texture are associated with crop rotation lengths in California strawberry production. Enough land may be available in the Santa Maria and Monterey Bay regions for growers to lengthen crop rotations, but water quality, social networks, and financial considerations that were outside the scope of this study are likely to limit the ability for strawberry growers to maximize the duration of crop rotations. This review critically analyzed the use of biosorbents derived from rice husks and corn residues for nutrient removal from aqueous solutions. Additionally, this review highlighted the use of such biosorbents in wastewater treatment. Furthermore, novel approaches for sustainable nutrient removal from aqueous solutions were identified. A comprehensive understanding of the implementation of biosorption processes using agro-industrial residues based on corn and rice crops is critical for the sustainable management of residues and water bodies in the world to protect and conserve natural resources. Specifically, the review focuses on the exploration, preparation and application of innovative biosorbents to remove various forms of nutrients such as total nitrogen, total phosphorus, nitrates, ammonium and phosphates from aqueous solution, analyzing the sustainability of treatments applied to biomass, such as thermal transformation or chemical modification to reduce environmental impacts. It was found that 95 to 99% of nitrogen and phosphorus can be removed with biosorbents made from rice husks and corn residues, analyzing approximately 50 scientific articles related to these plant materials. Research opportunities were identified, such as the recovery of removed nutrients for soil improvement, life cycle analysis to assess the concept of zero waste, among other aspects. The link between the financial success of family companies during COVID-19 and their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance is examined for the first time in this research. We have a natural setting in the COVID-19 era to see if the market rewards family-run firms that integrate social and environmental concerns into their goals during uncertain times. Since they can enhance their image and reputation, which the market values, these companies are likely to pursue broader social objectives, such as environmental improvement (socioemotional wealth perspective); alternatively, managers can act as stewards of the family's interests by using these initiatives to increase the company's value (stewardship perspective). However, it is also possible that in this type of companies economic interests prevail over social wellness ("amoral familism"). Therefore, family-owned firms could be reluctant to implement ESG practices unless they yield certain socioemotional benefits, including enhancing or maintaining their reputation in the public eye. In light of the above, we use an international display of the 500 biggest family firms in the world from 2015 to 2021. Taking into account an endogenous relationship between ESG performance and family business value, the study uses generalized moments to construct a dynamic panel (GMM). The primary conclusion is that there is a positive correlation between corporate valuation and ESG performance. Nonetheless, it has been noted that the performance of the companies is negatively impacted during the COVID-19 period. However, for firms with superior ESG performance, this negative impact did not exist over this period, supporting the idea that investors view better ESG performance as a prediction of future good stock performance. The results have a variety of implications. To begin with, this study adds to the body of knowledge on the environmentally friendly and sustainable expansion of family companies by providing recommendations for investors and businesses to better understand the influence of ESG on the profitability of family businesses. Furthermore, managers have to concentrate on enhancing the ESG performance of their organizations as it has the potential to increase value, draw in investments, encourage sustainability, control risks, affect earnings, and interact with the ownership structure. Additionally, managers need to consider how important it is to have a strong ESG performance in order to mitigate the negative effects of external crises like the COVID-19 epidemic. This article studies the relationship between environmental, social and governance (ESG) score and dividend payment for 274 large family firms in the period 2015–2021. This research has three contributions to the literature. First, to the best of our knowledge this is the first article to focus on large family firms considering their greater importance in stock ownership around the world. Second, this sample covers both developed and emerging nations. Third, our study not only establishes a connection between ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) criteria and dividend payments but also considers how financial constraints moderate the relationship between ESG scores and dividend payments. The results indicate a positive influence of ESG scores on dividend payments. Furthermore, financial constraints of family firms are negatively related to dividend payments. Finally, the moderating effect of financial constraints on the relationship between dividend payment and ESG show that for high levels of financial constraints that dividends are less sensitive to ESG score. The opposite effect is reported when firms show low levels of financial constraints. Practically speaking, the study demonstrates the value of creating a dividend policy that is in line with the ESG score because they are complementary signals. Additionally, it is important to consider financial limitations when planning financial reserves in family firms. An enhanced database (RetroDB) of the Spanish wind energy resources, derived from a high spatial resolution integration with the WRF model, is proposed and evaluated. RetroDB provides hourly capacity factor (CF) values for the Spanish regions, along the period of 2007–2020, with an unprecedented spatial resolution. RetroDB estimates were benchmarked based on the ERA5 global reanalysis. A comprehensive evaluation study of both RetroDB and ERA5 estimates was conducted using surface and tall mast measurements, along with actual CF values. The extent to which RetroDB and ERA5 reproduced the CF spatial variability, distribution, and ramp distribution were specifically addressed. The results showed no differences between the global and regional reanalysis performance regarding nationally aggregated wind energy estimates. Nevertheless, RetroDB clearly shows a superior performance reproducing the wind speeds' and CFs' spatial and temporal distributions. This was found to be related to the higher reliability of RetroDB reproducing the aloft winds in complex topographic areas. Overall, the results clearly indicate that, in areas such as the study region, where the wind resources are mostly associated with topographic enhancements, high spatial resolution regional reanalyses are preferable over relative coarse reanalyses (e.g., ERA5), particularly for wind energy integration studies. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most prevalent cancer in children, and despite considerable progress in treatment outcomes, relapses still pose significant risks of mortality and long-term complications. To address this challenge, we employed a supervised machine learning technique, specifically random survival forests, to predict the risk of relapse and mortality using array-based DNA methylation data from a cohort of 763 pediatric ALL patients treated in Nordic countries. The relapse risk predictor (RRP) was constructed based on 16 CpG sites, demonstrating c-indexes of 0.667 and 0.677 in the training and test sets, respectively. The mortality risk predictor (MRP), comprising 53 CpG sites, exhibited c-indexes of 0.751 and 0.754 in the training and test sets, respectively. To validate the prognostic value of the predictors, we further analyzed two independent cohorts of Canadian (n = 42) and Nordic (n = 384) ALL patients. The external validation confirmed our findings, with the RRP achieving a c-index of 0.667 in the Canadian cohort, and the RRP and MRP achieving c-indexes of 0.529 and 0.621, respectively, in an independent Nordic cohort. The precision of the RRP and MRP models improved when incorporating traditional risk group data, underscoring the potential for synergistic integration of clinical prognostic factors. The MRP model also enabled the definition of a risk group with high rates of relapse and mortality. Our results demonstrate the potential of DNA methylation as a prognostic factor and a tool to refine risk stratification in pediatric ALL. Fatigue fractures in materials are the main cause of approximately 80% of all material failures, and it is believed that such failures can be predicted and mathematically calculated in a reliable manner. It is possible to establish prediction modalities in cases of fatigue fractures according to three fundamental variables in fatigue, such as volume, number of fracture cycles, as well as applied stress, with the integration of Weibull constants (length characteristic). In this investigation, mechanical fatigue tests were carried out on specimens smaller than 4 mm2, made of different industrial materials. Their subsequent analysis was performed through precision computed tomography, in search for microfractures. The measurement of these microfractures, along with their metrics and classifications, was recorded. A convolutional neural network trained with deep learning was used to achieve the detection of microfractures in image processing. The detection of microfractures in images with resolutions of 480 × 854 or 960 × 960 pixels is the primary objective of this network, and its accuracy is above 95%. Images that have microfractures and those without are classified using the network. Subsequently, by means of image processing, the microfracture is isolated. Finally, the images containing this feature are interpreted using image processing to obtain their area, perimeter, characteristic length, circularity, orientation, and microfracture-type metrics. All values are obtained in pixels and converted to metric units (μm) through a conversion factor based on image resolution. This review delves into the utilization of a sextic oscillator within the β degree of freedom of the Bohr Hamiltonian to elucidate critical-point solutions in nuclei, with a specific emphasis on the critical point associated with the β shape variable, governing transitions from spherical to deformed nuclei. To commence, an overview is presented for critical-point solutions E(5), X(5), X(3), Z(5), and Z(4). These symmetries, encapsulated in simple models, all model the β degree of freedom using an infinite square-well (ISW) potential. They are particularly useful for dissecting phase transitions from spherical to deformed nuclear shapes. The distinguishing factor among these models lies in their treatment of the γ degree of freedom. These models are rooted in a geometrical context, employing the Bohr Hamiltonian. The review then continues with the analysis of the same critical solutions but with the adoption of a sextic potential in place of the ISW potential within the β degree of freedom. The sextic oscillator, being quasi-exactly solvable (QES), allows for the derivation of exact solutions for the lower part of the energy spectrum. The outcomes of this analysis are examined in detail. Additionally, various versions of the sextic potential, while not exactly solvable, can still be tackled numerically, offering a means to establish benchmarks for criticality in the transitional path from spherical to deformed shapes. This review extends its scope to encompass related papers published in the field in the past 20 years, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of critical-point symmetries in nuclear physics. To facilitate this understanding, a map depicting the different regions of the nuclide chart where these models have been applied is provided, serving as a concise summary of their applications and implications in the realm of nuclear structure. Cultural heritage is one of many fields that has seen a significant digital transformation in the form of digitization and asset annotations for heritage preservation, inheritance, and dissemination. However, a lack of accurate and descriptive metadata in this field has an impact on the usability and discoverability of digital content, affecting cultural heritage platform visitors and resulting in an unsatisfactory user experience as well as limiting processing capabilities to add new functionalities. Over time, cultural heritage institutions were responsible for providing metadata for their collection items with the help of professionals, which is expensive and requires significant effort and time. In this sense, crowdsourcing can play a significant role in digital transformation or massive data processing, which can be useful for leveraging the crowd and enriching the metadata quality of digital cultural content. This paper focuses on a very important challenge faced by cultural heritage crowdsourcing platforms, which is how to attract users and make such activities enjoyable for them in order to achieve higher-quality annotations. One way to address this is to offer personalized interesting items based on each user preference, rather than making the user experience random and demanding. Thus, we present an image annotation recommendation system for users of cultural heritage platforms. The recommendation system design incorporates various technologies intending to help users in selecting the best matching images for annotations based on their interests and characteristics. This study examines how the dividend payout of Chilean firms is associated with economic policy uncertainty (EPU), while controlling for ownership concentration and free cash flow, to consider agency problems. Its contribution is twofold. First, it detects a non-linear, U-shaped relation between EPU and dividend payout, which is a novel finding. Second, this result holds only in cases of high EPU. No significant relationship in cases of low EPU was detected. The sample comprises an unbalanced panel data of 1034 observations from 2005 to 2016. Including ownership concentration as an independent variable leads to a negative association between it and dividend payout, showing a potential agency problem between the main shareholder and the minorities. If free cash flow is considered in the model, then the results show a positive relation between free cash flow and dividend payout, which implies the mitigation of the agency problem. Finally, once both variables (ownership concentration and free cash flow) are considered together as explanatory variables, only free cash flow turns out to be statistically significant and positively associated with dividend payout. Embedding models turn words/documents into real-number vectors via co-occurrence data from unrelated texts. Crafting domain-specific embeddings from general corpora with limited domain vocabulary is challenging. Existing solutions retrain models on small domain datasets, overlooking potential of gathering rich in-domain texts. We exploit Named Entity Recognition and Doc2Vec for autonomous in-domain corpus creation. Simple Summary: Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease characterized by different risks of relapse, which makes it challenging to predict progression and select the most appropriate follow-up strategies. With the ever-growing adoption of Electronic Health Records, there are great opportunities to leverage the amount of data collected routinely in electronic format for secondary purposes. Machine Learning algorithms offer the ability to analyze large amounts of data and reveal insights that might otherwise go undetected. In this study, we have applied several algorithms to predict 5-year breast cancer recurrence from health data. We compared whether taking advantage of both structured and unstructured data from health records yields better prediction results than using any of the sources separately. These algorithms are valuable tools to help clinicians effectively integrate large amounts of data into their decision-making and are key to improving risk stratification and providing personalized assistance to patients. Recurrence is a critical aspect of breast cancer (BC) that is inexorably tied to mortality. Reuse of healthcare data through Machine Learning (ML) algorithms offers great opportunities to improve the stratification of patients at risk of cancer recurrence. We hypothesized that combining features from structured and unstructured sources would provide better prediction results for 5-year cancer recurrence than either source alone. We collected and preprocessed clinical data from a cohort of BC patients, resulting in 823 valid subjects for analysis. We derived three sets of features: structured information, features from free text, and a combination of both. We evaluated the performance of five ML algorithms to predict 5-year cancer recurrence and selected the best-performing to test our hypothesis. The XGB (eXtreme Gradient Boosting) model yielded the best performance among the five evaluated algorithms, with precision = 0.900, recall = 0.907, F1-score = 0.897, and area under the receiver operating characteristic AUROC = 0.807. The best prediction results were achieved with the structured dataset, followed by the unstructured dataset, while the combined dataset achieved the poorest performance. ML algorithms for BC recurrence prediction are valuable tools to improve patient risk stratification, help with post-cancer monitoring, and plan more effective follow-up. Structured data provides the best results when fed to ML algorithms. To evaluate associations between the domains of the ANCA-associated vasculitis patient-reported outcome (AAV-PRO) instrument and clinical variables. Patients with granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), microscopic polyangiitis (MPA), eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA), or renal-limited vasculitis (RLV) were recruited from a tertiary care center in Mexico City. Demographic, clinical, serological, and treatment-related data were retrieved. Disease activity, damage, patient and physician global assessments (PtGA and PhGA) were evaluated. All patients completed the AAV-PRO questionnaire, male patients also completed the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) questionnaire. Seventy patients (44 women and 26 men) were included, with a median age of 53.5 years (43–61), and a disease duration of 82 months (34–135). Moderate correlations were identified between the PtGA and the AAV-PRO domains: social and emotional impact, treatment side effects, organ-specific symptoms, and physical function. The PhGA correlated with the PtGA and prednisone doses. Subanalyses of the AAV-PRO domains according to sex, age, and disease duration showed significant differences in the treatment side effects domain, with higher scores in women, in patients < 50 years, and in patients with disease duration < 5 years. The domain of concerns about the future showed a higher score in patients with disease duration < 5 years. A total of 17/24 (70.8%) of men who completed the IIEF-5 questionnaire were classified as having some degree of erectile dysfunction. The domains of AAV-PRO correlated with other outcome measures, while differences were found between some of the domains according to sex, age, and disease duration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main objective of this research is to shed more light on how ESG may be seen as a valuable investment for family firms. We study the impact of ESG performance on the value of family firms by considering the moderating role played by financial constraints and agency costs. Using an international sample of 254 firms that belong to the 500 largest family-owned firms worldwide over the period 2015–2021, we report that the overall ESG score is positively associated with firm value. Among the three ESG components, we find that environmental and social performances have a positive and statistically significant impact on firm value. However, we find no evidence of any significant effect of governance score on firm value. More importantly, we also find that the impact of ESG performance on firm value is lower under the presence of financial constraints and agency costs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Licaria ramiroi, a species endemic to western Mexico, is described and illustrated. The ascription of the new species to Licaria is analysed. It is classified in the subgen. Licaria and is most closely related to L. triandra and L. siphonantha from which it differs by its glabrous vegetative and floral structures, stamens mainly with free anthers and the inner wall of the receptacle sericeous. Magnetite nanorods (MNRs) are synthesized based on the use of hematite nanoparticles of the desired geometry and dimensions as templates. The nanorods are shown to be highly monodisperse, with a 5:1 axial ratio, and with a 275 nm long semiaxis. The MNRs are intended to be employed as magnetic hyperthermia and photothermia agents, and as drug vehicles. To achieve a better control of their photothermia response, the particles are coated with a layer of gold, after applying a branched polyethyleneimine (PEI, 2 kDa molecular weight) shell. Magnetic hyperthermia is performed by application of alternating magnetic fields with frequencies in the range 118–210 kHz and amplitudes up to 22 kA/m. Photothermia is carried out by subjecting the particles to a near-infrared (850 nm) laser, and three monochromatic lasers in the visible spectrum with wavelengths 480 nm, 505 nm, and 638 nm. Best results are obtained with the 505 nm laser, because of the proximity between this wavelength and that of the plasmon resonance. A so-called dual therapy is also tested, and the heating of the samples is found to be faster than with either method separately, so the strengths of the individual fields can be reduced. Due to toxicity concerns with PEI coatings, viability of human hepatoblastoma HepG2 cells was tested after contact with nanorod suspensions up to 500 µg/mL in concentration. It was found that the cell viability was indistinguishable from control systems, so the particles can be considered non-cytotoxic in vitro. Finally, the release of the antitumor drug doxorubicin is investigated for the first time in the presence of the two external fields, and of their combination, with a clear improvement in the rate of drug release in the latter case. In this research, a combined photocatalytic and biological treatment is proposed for the elimination of pollutants present in textile wastewater using a natural erionite zeolite (PE) and aluminum oxide (PA) synthesized by the sol-gel method as photocatalysts, and solar radiation. Both catalysts were characterized by XRD, SEM, and EDS. For biological treatment two bacterial consortium were used: BC1 (Escherichia coli N16, Serratia k120, Pseudomonas putida B03 and Enterobacter hormaechei), and consortium BC2 (Escherichia coli N16, Serratia Mc107, Enterobacter N9, Enterobacter hormaechei Mc9). The photocatalytic and microbiological treatments were carried out initially separately and subsequently in a sequential manner, first the photocatalytic followed by the microbiological to determine if a synergistic effect was achieved. Comparing the photocatalytic performance, erionite showed higher performance of dyes degradation (54.75%) than alumina (28.62%). While in the biological process, BC1 decreased the dye concentration to 56.93% and BC2 to 53.56%. Finally, the best combined process was PA+BC1 reaching pollutants degradation 64.62%, showing that the application of both processes promotes a decolorization in textile wastewater. The water resulting from the combined photocatalysis-microbiological degradation processes was tested for toxicity using Daphnia magna, obtaining that none of the effluents shows toxicity. The European Union is investing in the areas of digital skills, digital infrastructures, digitisation of businesses, and public services to speed up numerous administrative processes and to facilitate access to citizens from member countries and neighbouring ones as well. This study provides a quantitative assessment of the efficiency gains that can be attained by the ongoing digital transformation in the realm of Erasmus+, the European Commission's programme for education, training, youth, and sport for the period 2021–2027. This programme manages a sizable budget allocated to education and training opportunities abroad for millions of students, teachers, and other staff of Higher Education Institutions within the EU and beyond. The management of such experiences has significantly grown in complexity over the last decades, entailing notable expenses that the EC aims to reduce through the end-to-end digitalisation of administrative procedures. Our analysis of the savings attained by the so-called Erasmus Without Paper project (EWP) was conducted by taking a close look at the workload, resources, and money invested in Erasmus+ proceedings by four universities from Spain, Italy, and Turkey. The analysis revealed significant savings in terms of paper wastage (a reduction of more than 13.5 million prints every year for the whole Erasmus+ programme) and administrative time, which may translate into lower staff effort and increased productivity, to the point of managing up to 80% more mobilities with the same resources and staff currently available. International migrants are a particularly vulnerable group in the context of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Immigrants in Chile tend to experience multidimensional poverty and layers of social vulnerability. Our analysis aims to describe the perceived social and health-related needs of international migrants during the COVID-19 pandemic in Chile in terms of migration as a social determinant of health and layered social vulnerability. We carried out a qualitative analysis of responses to an open-ended question focused on the social and health-related needs linked to the pandemic included in an online questionnaire disseminated during April 2020 aimed at international migrants residing in Chile. The information gathered was thematically analysed. We included 1690 participants. They expressed needs related to health and others linked to the overall socio-economic and political response, employment, material conditions and psychosocial aspects. They also reported needs related to 'being a migrant'. Additionally, some participants described situations of vulnerability. We analysed their needs and situations of vulnerability identified around the following emerging frames: (a) work and living conditions, (b) regularisation traps and perceived lack of support and (c) and physical and mental health needs. International migrants in Chile report experiencing interrelated layers of social vulnerability during the COVID-19 pandemic, where 'being a migrant' exacerbates physical and mental health risks. The issues revealed are immediate and direct public health challenges, as well as different aspects of social vulnerability linked to migratory status, employment and barriers to accessing healthcare that should be addressed through comprehensive policies and measures. In this research, the shuttle effect and the low sulfur activation of lithium–sulfur batteries were mitigated by coating the cathode side of Celgard 2400 separators with mixtures of carbon black/chitosan or carbon black/polyvinylidene fluoride using the simple slurry technique. Carbon nanoparticles and the polar groups of the polymers were responsible for boosting the reaction kinetics of sulfur and the chemical and physical trapping of lithium polysulfides. The adsorption of sulfur species in the coated separators was confirmed by the morphologic changes observed in the AFM and SEM images and by the new elements presented in the EDX spectra after 100 charge/discharge cycles. The high intensity of the peaks in the cyclic voltammograms and the long plateaus in the discharge profiles support the improvement in the reaction kinetics. The batteries with the carbon black/chitosan- and carbon black/polyvinylidene fluoride-coated separators reached high specific discharge capacities of 833 and 698 mAhg−1, respectively, after 100 cycles at 0.5 C.
