Background: Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD) is a global public health concern. This study aimed to estimate the healthcare resource utilization (HRU) and costs stratified by cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk categories using real-world evidence, in a regional population in Portugal. Methods: This is a retrospective observational study, using data from Electronic Health Records between 2017 and 2021. Patients aged ≥ 40 years, and with at least one general practitioner (GP) appointment in the 3 years before 31st of December 2019, were included. CVD risk categories were determined based on 2021 ESC prevention guidelines. HRU encompassed hospital data (hospitalizations, outpatient and emergency room visits) and GP appointments. Total direct costs per patient were calculated based on the reference cost of the Portuguese legislation for payment methodology on Diagnosis-Related Groups (DRGs). Results: Analysis of 3 122 695 episodes, revealed consistent HRU and costs across the five years. Very high-risk patients, showed higher HRU, particularly in hospital admissions. Costs tended to rise with higher CVD risk level. Very high-risk patients with ASCVD had higher costs for hospital admissions, while low-to-moderate risk patients had higher costs for GP visits. Despite a smaller proportion, very high-risk patients with prior ASCVD represent the highest costs per patient across healthcare settings (from 115€ in emergency visits to 2 673€ in hospitalizations), followed by very high-risk patients without prior ASCVD (ASCVD-risk equivalents). Conclusion: This study revealed a substantial HRU and costs by patients with very high CVD risk, particularly those with prior ASCVD. Moreover, ASCVD-risk equivalents emerge as notable consumers, emphasizing the importance of risk assessment and preventive measures in cost-effective management of these patients. The annual costs related to corrosion and its prevention have been responsible for a significant part of the Gross Domestic Product in the Western world. In addition to economic costs and technological delays, corrosion can lead to structural failures having dramatic consequences for humans and the environment. In this context, the constant development of coating technology is needed. The search for natural products applied in anti-corrosive coatings has been of great industrial importance as they have a lower energy consumption in their production when compared to their synthetic counterparts. Plant extracts represent a rich source of natural chemical components that can be extracted by means of simple and low-cost procedures. In this research, an alkaloid-rich extract from the jaborandi leaf, with epiisopiloturine (EPI) as the major alkaloid, is investigated for its anti-corrosive activity. The investigation includes the coating formation on an AISI type 1020 steel substrate, which was submitted to accelerated corrosion tests and then to polarization analysis and impedance measurements in saline environment. The extract-covered plates proved to be corrosion-resistant in a saline environment. Thus, using computational chemistry, we propose an electrostatic interaction model that rationalizes the EPI adhesion on metal surfaces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The strategies that allow invasive alien species to perpetuate themselves in the long term are still poorly understood in invasion science. Considering top predators, a key issue is how they overcome the prey decline which they have caused during the invasion process. We investigate factors related to the persistence, impacts and long‐term success of the emerging peacock bass (Cichlidae: Cichla) invasion, a fish native to the Amazon biome that has been introduced globally.We analysed a robust temporal database that includes comparisons (1994–2002 vs. 2015–2017) on the diet of Cichla ocellaris, the abundance of this invader, its prey and competitors in a human‐modified ecosystem. In addition, we compare the frequency of cannibalism (presence or absence) between native versus non‐native populations, and between natural versus human‐modified ecosystems in the American continent. Four hypotheses were tested: (i) prey and competitor populations decrease through time as a result of predation impacts; (ii) cannibalism is size‐ and density‐dependent, and increases after native prey decline; (iii) cannibalism is more frequent in non‐native populations; and (iv) the abundance of invader decreases over time because of reduced resources and increased cannibalism.Our results revealed that the impacts of introducing this predator into communities are temporally cumulative and continue to evolve even after 70 years since its introduction. These impacts have led to dramatic reductions in prey availability, resulting in widespread cannibalism. Adult individuals preying on juveniles in areas with higher abundances of peacock bass indicated that cannibalism is size‐ and density‐dependent. Cannibalism was more frequent in non‐native populations and in human‐modified ecosystems. A complex feedback process (reproduce and cannibalise frequently) may be responsible for overcoming long‐term resource scarcity, and the cannibalism may not be a regulatory force strong enough to surpass the reproductive success of the population.Our findings at the local and continental scale converge to confirm the cannibalism as an adaptive invasiveness strategy that facilitates the invasion process and makes populations self‐sustainable in the long term, which may jeopardise the efficacy of management actions for these top predators introduced globally. Dams modify river physical and chemical attributes. This disruption hampers fish migration, leading to the introduction of non‐native species and losses of specialised native species. Small hydropower plants (SHPs) have been suggested for replacing large dams to minimise reservoir size and preserve natural flow regimes. We evaluated the influences of two SHPs on the ichthyofauna in a tropical river, comparing fish taxonomic and functional beta‐diversity in three periods. Period‐1 preceded SHP construction (Pre‐2008), when the river was free‐flowing. Period‐2 was 1 year after completion of SHP construction (Post‐2012). Period‐3 was after 10 years of SHP operation (Current‐2021). We calculated 10 functional ichthyofaunal attributes based on 12 quantitative morphometric measurements related to habitat use, feeding, and locomotion. The ichthyofaunal composition varied among the periods (p =.001) and seasons (p =.009), with the highest species richness in the Post period compared to the other two periods (p =.002). Abundance significantly decreased over time (p =.004). Taxonomic beta‐diversity increased in the Post period remaining stable in the Current period. Functional beta‐diversity did not change between the Pre and Post periods but significantly increased in the Current period. The turnover component had the greater influence on both taxonomic and functional beta‐diversity, with no temporal changes observed in nestedness. The ichthyofauna appears to have undergone heterogenisation and restructuring. Changes include the emergence of more tolerant species (e.g., Hoplosternum littorale and Pimelodus maculatus), displacement of native and sensitive species (e.g., Pogonopoma parahybae and Steindachneridion parahybae), and colonisation by a non‐native predator (Plagioscion squamosissimus). Functional characteristics of species are of great importance for understanding their roles in ecosystems and can be used to detect long‐term chances in the environment. We evaluated temporal changes (1983–1985 and 2017–2019) in taxonomic and functional indices of the fish fauna in shallow areas of a tropical bay heavily impacted by anthropogenic activities in recent decades. The hypothesis that functional indices change over time as a result of environmental degradation was tested. Our results showed a significant decrease in species richness and abundance over time, and in functional richness, while others functional diversity indices (divergency, evenness, and originality) remained stable. Thirteen functional groups were detected, some of which contained only one species, raising concerns about the loss of ecosystem functions due to ongoing changes. We also observed an increase in beta diversity over time, which may be the result of a decrease in local richness without leading to regional extinctions. Turnover was the most important process in structuring the fish fauna at the evaluated time scale. The relative stability of the functional structure and the higher levels of turnover seem to be related to the dominance of functional groups, within which species replace each other according to their responses to environmental filters that select for specific functional traits. Incorporating functional diversity indices and beta diversity variations in the fish community helped to enhance the existing information about this coastal system by offering improved estimates of biological diversity through diverse approaches. The predominance of turnover identified in the preset study suggests a dynamic and fluctuating species composition within the habitat. Environmental influences on species' functional traits are important ecological issues to assess biodiversity. Relationships among fish abundance, their functional traits, and environmental conditions across different levels of anthropogenic impacts in a tropical Brazilian river were evaluated. We combined RLQ and fourth-corner methods, utilizing local environmental variables and the Human Footprint Index (HFI) as a human activities indicator. Three HFI levels (High, Intermediate, and Low) and short-term (1993–2009) impact changes at each location were assigned. Fish with internal fertilization and small body sizes were strongly associated with high HFI scores. Grass-dominated riparian areas were common in altered locations, whereas less altered localities exhibited the riparian cover dominated by trees. Highly altered areas showed high HFI, grass-covered riparian zones, and small-sized species with internal fertilization (e.g., Cyprinodontiformes like Poecilia vivipara, Poecilia reticulata, and Phalloceros caudimaculatus). In contrast, less altered areas had tree-lined riparian zones and medium to large-sized species with external fertilization and diverse traits. Underlying deterministic processes shape species distribution, tied to environment and traits. Filtering of traits in the most altered locations may favor small-sized species with internal fertilization. This approach, utilizing HFI and local variables to assess trait–environment relationships of riverine fish, facilitates understanding organisms' responses to environmental constraints. Damming of large rivers has promoted well‐documented ecosystem changes that constitute critical threats to freshwater fish biodiversity. However, it is unclear how trait–environment relationships drive community assembly in older (>50 years) tropical river‐reservoir systems. We assessed physical features filtering functional traits (RLQ and fourth‐corner approaches) in seven tropical reservoirs along a major river, in southeastern Brazil, and correlated taxonomic and functional counterparts of local and beta diversity to assess niche‐based assembly processes under prevailing environmental conditions (null model approach). Lower littoral habitat availability (smaller area, volume, and riverine influence) favored species inhabiting open areas that feed on the bottom (mostly migratory species). Downstream position (lower elevation and inflow of water from the mainstem) allowed migrators to enter the reservoirs and promoted environmental heterogeneity, favoring detritivores, invertivores, and carnivorous generalists. Total blocking of the main channel excluded most migratory species from reservoirs at upstream reaches, whereas higher riverine influence and hydrological stability (larger area, volume, and water residence time) favored small‐sized sedentary species (omnivores and piscivores with parental care, mostly non‐native species) in the littoral zone. Correlations differing from null expectations for alpha diversity and nestedness revealed that niche‐based processes support species richness and loss under higher riverine influence and hydrological stability. Our study supports the importance of physical features to set functional spaces available for fish species, but random processes that boost taxonomic differences between reservoirs, largely related to non‐native species introductions, are the primary drivers of fish assemblage structure in tropical reservoirs long‐term disconnected from riverine dynamics. Resource partitioning is essential for coexistence of phylogenetically related species in altered environments, where changes in biotopes can limit resources and change ecological strategies. We investigated resource partitioning between two congeneric catfishes (Hypostomus affinis and H. luetkeni) in three niche dimensions (trophic, spatial, and temporal) in a Neotropical reservoir. We tested the hypothesis that the use of different mesohabitats (spatial dimension) is more relevant for the coexistence of species, and that morphological differences between the species confer different advantages in the mesohabitats occupation. We evaluated species morphology, diet composition and abundance along a spatial-temporal gradient. A high dietary overlap and a low temporal variability in species abundance were found, indicating that these two dimensions play a minor role in the species distribution. However, a strong spatial segregation modulated apparently by morphological differences was observed. Hypostomus luetkeni has a larger oral disk area, and a flatter body that confer advantages in the occupation of lotics habitats, whereas H. affinis has relatively larger fins that provide more efficient displacements in lentic habitats. Spatial partitioning was the main driver modulating mechanism for the coexistence of these species and differences in the occupation of the mesohabitats probably have been amplified in this altered environment. Introduction: Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by neuronal dysfunction and death. Studies suggest that some seed extracts have a neuroprotective effect. Considering the increased incidence of these diseases and the need for new effective therapies with fewer side effects, this review aimed to assess the evidence of the efficacy and safety of seed extracts in experimental models of neurodegeneration. Material and Method: The search was carried out through studies published between 2000 and 2021 in Science Direct, PubMed, Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), and Latin American Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS) databases, in which the effects of seed extracts in in vitro and in vivo experimental models of neurodegeneration were investigated. Based on the eligibility criteria, 47 studies were selected for this review. Results: In the in vitro models, the neuroprotection of the seed extracts was a result of their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic properties. In the in vivo models, neuroprotection resulted from the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, a decrease in motor deficits, an improvement in learning and memory, as well as the increased release of neurotransmitters. The results show promise for the future of clinical research on new therapies for neurodegenerative diseases. However, the studies are still limited, which does not allow us to extrapolate the results to human beings with ND. Conclusions: Therefore, clinical trials are needed in order to prove the results of the in vitro and in vivo studies, as well as to assess the ideal, safe, and effective dose of these seed extracts in patients with neurodegenerative diseases. As human-induced environmental changes reduce niche opportunities from global to local scales, permanent shifts in species traits alter ecosystem processes. Disentangling multiscale mechanisms driving temporal changes in coastal fish biodiversity is thus critical to conservation aims. From seasonal to multiyear periods, we investigated how local environmental variation and landscape features shape temporal beta diversity (abundance-based and trait-based dissimilarities, and their components of replacement and nestedness) per zones in bays and coastal lagoons, Southeastern Brazil. At larger temporal dimensions, unaccounted processes in individual systems influenced primarily taxonomic dissimilarity, whereas functional responses to variation in marine influence varied between types of system and zones. From 2 years to seasons, taxonomic and functional dissimilarities decreased with abundance-based species replacement, and both trait-based components, respectively. Replacement processes were primarily related to marine influence (transparency, salinity, pH, and tidal phase) at larger temporal dimensions, and habitat availability (mangroves and nearby estuaries) and complexity (forest cover and landscape urbanization) in seasons. Seasonal variations in tidal phase (lower) and pH (higher), respectively, promoted taxonomic (abundance gradients) and functional (fish trait loss) nestedness under shorter environmental gradients. The alternation of light and darkness drives species' activities, and identifying diel rhythms is critical for understanding the ecology and representing the biodiversity of a range of communities. This study aimed to investigate diel changes in rocky reef fish assemblage composition and structure and to identify the most underestimated nocturnal species. We performed visual counts of rocky reef fishes along six times of the day (dawn, morning, afternoon, dusk, early night, and night) within three consecutive days. Distinct fish assemblages were observed, with species from multiple trophic levels during the day, while planktivorous and invertebrate feeders dominated the nighttime. Dawn and dusk shared diurnal and nocturnal species with long active periods, with no records of exclusively crepuscular species. Fish richness and abundance increased from dawn to a peak in the morning or afternoon and decreased at dusk with the lowest values during the night. Nocturnal planktivorous and invertivorous species would be severely underestimated using only diurnal samples, suggesting a potential bias to the understanding of the trophic dynamics. We discussed the underlying processes driving short-term dynamics of reef fish assemblages (e.g., predation risk and prey availability) and highlighted the need for a better representation of twilight and night periods in reef fish ecological studies. Leptopanchax opalescens is a critically endangered small annual fish. Reproductive traits of this species were studied to improve our understanding of the strategies that facilitate the occupation of temporary wetlands. We compiled egg diameter and maximum total length data from 136 neotropical killifishes (Rivulidae) to establish comparisons between species with different life histories. We tested the hypothesis that annual killifishes have smaller body sizes and eggs than non-annual killifishes, which may be associated with different life spans and embryonic diapause. Fish were collected from the Guandu River Hydrographic Region (southeastern Brazil). DNA barcoding was employed to confirm the species’ identity. The phases of gonadal development and spawn type were described using histological techniques. Egg size and fecundity were determined. Females with batch spawning and males with continuous spawning were detected. The batch fecundity ranged from 22 to 32 vitellogenic oocytes (mean 27 ± 7 SD). Maximum body size was similar between the two life cycles (p = 0.24), but egg size was smaller for annual killifishes (p < 0.001). Spawning in batches, synchronous modal development of oocytes, continued production of sperm in males, and a complex process of embryonic diapause are reproductive traits that favor the resilience of L. opalescens and other annual fish in temporary wetlands. We conclude that body size is not related to lifespan and that factors underlying the selection of different egg sizes between annual and non-annual killifish species may be associated with different life history strategies to deal with stressful habitats. Simple Summary: The whitemouth croaker Micropogonias furnieri is an important fishery resource on the southwest Atlantic coast. Despite being heavily exploited, there are a few uncertainties regarding the population structure in the transition area between the tropical and warm temperate zones (South Brazilian Bight). In the State of Rio de Janeiro (the northern part of this area), local environmental conditions, such as an upwelling phenomena and large estuarine bays, together with contributions of continental drainage and anthropogenic activities, could determine different croaker populations. The aim of this study was to assess the fine-scale population structure of this species in three localities in Rio de Janeiro State (Brazil) and to compare it with previous studies that used different approaches. Through the combined use of genetic markers (nuclear microsatellites) and otolith signatures (morphometry and chemistry), two genotypic (North + Center/South) and three phenotypic (North + Center + South) populations were found. These results could contribute to a better understanding of the M. furnieri population dynamics and allow a rational management of this important fishing resource. The inshore area of the Southwestern Atlantic between 22 °S and 29 °S (South Brazilian Bight) is a transitional climatic zone, where the tropical and warm temperate provinces mix. In its northern part, i.e., in the coastal waters of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, local oceanographic conditions, such as upwelling in the north, and great bays with different degrees of anthropogenic influences in the center and south can determine the population structure of several fish stocks. The Whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) is one the most heavily exploited fishing resources in this area, but there are still some doubts about its population structure. In this study, through combined analyses using nuclear genetic markers and morphological and geochemical signatures of otoliths, a divergence of individuals between two populations was identified using microsatellites, while a finer spatial structure with three populations (north, center and south, respectively) was found based on otolith shapes and elemental signatures. The dynamics of fish assemblages in reservoirs depend on factors such as the morphometry of the catchment, habitat structure, and the uses of the reservoir. In the Paraíba do Sul (PSR) basin in southeastern Brazil, there are several types of reservoirs, some on the main channel, some are cascade reservoirs originated from a diversion of the waters of the PSR, and others are isolated reservoirs from tributaries. This study aimed to evaluate the influences of these three types of reservoirs on the taxonomic and functional distinctness of the fish assemblages. It was hypothesized that reservoirs on the main channel (more inflowing waters and habitat availability) have higher taxonomic and functional distinctness compared to cascade reservoirs, which in turn, have greater distinctness than isolated reservoirs. In addition, we expect assemblage structure to differ among these types of reservoirs because of the close relationship with local environmental conditions and habitat structure. Thirty measurements (26 quantitative and 4 categorical) from 34 fish species representing functional traits associated with locomotion, feeding, life strategy, and habitat use were taken. Fish assemblages differed among the three types of reservoirs, which was probably associated with different environmental and local habitat conditions. Higher taxonomic and functional distinctness were found for the isolated reservoirs, and lower for reservoirs on the main channel. This suggests that the fish fauna in this latter type of reservoir were probably composed of phylogenetically close and morphologically similar species. It is likely that limitation of the available resources induces fish to partition the available niches to coexist, favoring assemblages with species adapted to different functions. Our results demonstrate that assessing fish functional and taxonomic distinctness can be used to advance understanding of fish communities from reservoirs in Neotropical regions. The rising prevalence of cardiovascular (CV) risk factors in Portugal has translated into more than 35,000 annual deaths due to CV diseases. We performed a multicenter observational cohort study encompassing clinical activities performed between 2000 and 2019 to characterize the CV risk profile and LDL-C management of patients in every CV risk category using electronic health records of a regional population in Portugal. We analyzed data from 14 health centers and 1 central hospital in the north of Portugal of patients between 40 and 80 years that had at least 1 family medicine appointment at these institutions. Living patients were characterized on 31 December 2019. CV risk assessment was computed according to the 2019 ESC/EAS Guidelines. Lipid-lowering therapy (LLT) and achievement of LDL-C targets were assessed. In total, the analysis included 78,459 patients. Patient proportions were 33%, 29%, 22%, and 17% for low, intermediate, high, and very high CV risk, respectively. Moderate-intensity statins were the most frequently used medication across all CV risk categories. High-intensity statins were used in 5% and 10% of high and very high CV risk patients, respectively. Ezetimibe was used in 6% and 10% of high and very high CV risk patients, respectively. LDL-C targets were achieved in 44%, 27%, 7%, and 3% of low, intermediate, high, and very high CV risk patients, respectively. For uncontrolled patients in the high and very high CV risk categories, a median LDL-C reduction of 44% and 53%, respectively, would be required to meet LDL-C targets. There are clear opportunities to optimize LDL-C management in routine clinical practice. The prescription of LLT according to CV risk represents an important missed treatment opportunity. Background: Despite promising results, the effectiveness of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in patients with gastric cancer with peritoneal carcinomatosis (GCPC) has not been systematically evaluated. The aim of this systematic review is to compare the survival, complications and risk of recurrence between CRS + HIPEC versus CRS alone in GCPC. Patients and Methods: A systematic review was performed in MEDLINE and Web of Science according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Primary studies with patients with GCPC older than 18 years were included. Methodological Index for Non-randomized Studies (MINORS) criteria were used to assess the quality of the studies. We performed random-effects meta-analysis of risk ratios (RR). We assessed heterogeneity using the I2 statistic. Results: Five studies were included in the qualitative and four in the quantitative analysis. The overall survival (OS) rate after 1 year was 3.65 times higher for CRS + HIPEC than CRS alone [RR = 3.65, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) = 1.01–13.26, I2 = 73%]. The OS rate after 5 years was more than three times higher for CRS + HIPEC than for CRS alone (RR = 3.25, 95% CI = 1.28–8.26, I2 = 8%). No significant differences between CRS + HIPEC and CRS alone related to complications were found (RR = 1.05, 95% CI = 0.83–1.33, I2 = 0%). The risk of peritoneal recurrence was significantly lower for CRS + HIPEC than for CRS alone (RR = 0.23, 95% CI = 0.11–0.48, I2 = 40%). The results may be associated with some information or indication bias. Conclusions: Results should be analysed cautiously given the detected heterogeneity and limitations of included studies. However, treatment with CRS + HIPEC seems to increase the survival of patients with GCPC, more than treatment with CRS alone, decrease the risk of peritoneal recurrence and not be associated with more complications. The distribution of species depends on the relationship with other species and the influence of abiotic factors, modulated by long‐term evolutionary and biogeographic processes. Polychaetes and fish are important components of the biota that inhabit estuarine systems, coexisting in various habitats, although the relationship between these groups and their responses to environmental variables is poorly understood. This study aimed to assess the concordance between fish and polychaete communities in three zones (inner, middle, and outer) of a tropical bay and to determine environmental influences on these communities. The raised hypothesis is that benthic fish is associated with polychaetes and that these taxonomic groups respond differently to environmental conditions. Environmental characteristics were the main drivers determining the occurrence of fish species and polychaetes families; however, no consistent relationship was observed between fish and polychaetes. Sediment granulometry seems to be an essential driver in determining polychaetes and fish distribution while turbidity and phosphorus were also important for fish. The three zones differed in both water physicochemical and sediment (nutrients and granulometry) variables, which determined their uses by different fish and polychaetes species. Only one fish species, the gerreid Eucinostomus argenteus showed a weak but significant association with the Goniadidae and Spionidae polychaetes, which may be associated with similar environmental preferences of both taxa. The lack of a consistent relationship between benthic fish and their likely invertebrate prey may be associated with the small spatial scale of this study and the early fish life stages. Most fish in shallow coastal areas are still in their early life, feeding mainly on polychaetes and other benthic macroinvertebrates, and as the area is shallow, planktonic organisms may be included in their diet, thus relieving predation pressure on benthic organisms. Shallow coastal habitats are ruled by fluctuating environmental conditions, which lead to shifts in fish communities. Functional groups of habitat use and trophic strategy were used to address the responses of fish composition and diversity, since comparisons of rich tropical systems are often complex through species-based approaches. We hypothesized that fish groups will have specific affinities in response to the prevailing environmental conditions, especially those reflecting the prevalence of oceanic or estuarine conditions, where guilds of habitat use would perform better as indicators. Despite the importance of other environmental factors (i.e. temperature and transparency), salinity was the key structuring factor irrespective of the coastal lagoon. Although harbouring the greatest biomass of piscivores, the harsh environmental conditions at Araruama lagoon were related to low diversity. A great number of indicator species, typically of marine affinity, was found at the Saquarema lagoon, probably due to the continuous and broad connection to the sea leading to the predominance of euhaline conditions. Despite the presence of non-native species (i.e. Oreochromis niloticus), the Maricá lagoon function as an important refuge for freshwater groups. Biomarkers are used to assess health conditions of organisms and consequently to indicate environmental hazard, being important tools to address the effects of pollutants on environmental quality. We analyzed the hepatopancreas and kidney of two sciaenid fishes, the southern kingcroaker Menticirrhus americanus and the whitemouth croaker Micropogonias furnieri in the Paraty Bay (control system) and in the Sepetiba Bay (altered system) in southeast Brazilian coast. The altered bay is heavily affected by human activities, compared to the control bay, where the human interference is much reduced. The tested hypothesis was that these species respond to environmental changes with fishes from the altered bay having more histological changes in the hepatopancreas and kidney compared with those from the control bay. The fish hepatopancreas and kidneys from the altered system had high 50–100% incidence of changes and the histopathological alteration index reached values above 100 in the hepatopancreas and kidney, indicating irreversible damage to the organs. In contrast, in the control system, those values ranged between 20 and 100, indicating moderate and severe organ damages. These findings suggest that these organs and these two fish species can be considered useful biomarkers to assess environmental contamination in tropical bays. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a generalized formulation to describe nonuniform torsion in composite bars with variable cross section including higher-order warping modes. In that, the boundary-element subregion-by-subregion (BE SBS) technique is applied to determine the warping modes for cross sections constituted of any number of different materials. The distribution of the nonuniform warping along the axis is taken into account by multiplying the warping modes by derivatives of the associated twist angle functions. A new process based on the weighted residual method is proposed to solve the resulting global equilibrium equations. One also makes generic comments on the solution of the local coupled boundary-value problems (BVPs), which encompasses preconditioned Krylov solvers (embedded in the BE SBS technique), discontinuous boundary elements, and efficient (low-order) quadratures for singular and nearly-singular integrals. A new approach for visual fish survey in reservoirs using underwater drones (remotely operated vehicle- ROV) is presented. The ROV was applied to identify abiotic gradients and to compare fish assemblages on the steep slopes in a tropical reservoir. The tested hypothesis is that fish are concentrated in the littoral zone due to the better physicochemical and habitat conditions, compared to deep and hypoxic layers. Twelve species were recorded (seven native, five exotic), with all species occurring in the littoral zone, seven species in the transition, and four in the profundal zone. A greater fish abundance and richness was found in the littoral zone corroborating the main hypothesis. The littoral zone was dominated by exotic cichlids (Cichla spp., Coptodon rendalli), while native catfish (Loricariichthys castaneus, Pimelodella lateristriga) occupied deeper areas. The fish distribution seems to be driven by local factors, such as oxygen availability and habitat structure. The preference for the littoral zone by alien cichlids may have led to the extirpation/decrease of native characids and induced catfishes to occupy deep habitats. Underwater drones can be a valuable tool for the simultaneous collection of abiotic/biotic data, especially in deep reservoirs with complex habitats, resulting in advances in the environmental monitoring. Multiscale processes through dynamic boundaries drive the local contributions (LCBD; uniqueness in species composition and abundance) and species contributions (SCBD; individual species abundance variation) to fish beta diversity in coastal seascapes. We partitioned LCBD into LCBDRepl (replacement) and LCBDAbDiff (abundance difference), and used model-based approaches to investigate whether seascape size influences environmental and spatial drivers of LCBD, and effects of species (distribution, prevalence, and coastal dependence) on SCBD. Three large bays (bay level) and three zones per bay (zone level), southeastern Brazil, were seascape models during 1 year. At the bay level, more locations had higher LCBD, related to species composition, lower water transparency, and much less to flood/high tides and higher number of estuaries. LCBDRepl was also prevalent and stronger positive effects of transparency and mangrove cover reinforced the importance of environmental filtering and alternative habitats driving local contributions to replacement processes in larger seascapes. Species richness influenced positively LCBD primarily at the zone level, and negative effects of vegetal cover and primarily human settlements suggested species loss under lower heterogeneity. Also, more similar LCBDRepl and LCBDAbDiff evidenced the increasing local contributions to abundance differences in smaller species pools. At both levels, larger- and finer-scale spatial effects evidenced possible influences of dispersal and biotic interactions, respectively, on LCBDRepl and LCBDAbDiff. SCBD was positively related to species prevalence at locations and distribution at both levels. Therefore, multiscale mechanisms dependent and irrespective of seascape size support the critical importance of habitat availability, complexity, and variety to beta diversity of coastal fishes. Increases in temperatures over the last century, more intensively after the eighties, were recorded in several databases for the south‐eastern Brazil. These increases are likely to change fish communities in aquatic systems by decreasing abundances, biomass and sizes of some species more sensitive to climate change. Reservoirs may be particularly susceptible to the effects of climate change, as they isolate previously connected areas limiting fish dispersal and migration, as well as increasing water temperature and thermal stratification. We assessed temporal changes in the abundance and biomass of the ichthyofauna in an isolate reservoir (inflowing waters from small tributaries in a highland region) aiming to associate changes with climate effects over three decades (1990, 2000, 2010). Two abundant native species, a loricariid Loricariichthys castaneus (Castelnau, 1855) and a cichlid Geophagus brasiliensis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824), were selected to assess eventual response to climate changes in their geographical distribution in the Southeast Atlantic Hydrographic Region, considering different carbon emission scenarios using ecological niche models. A decrease in the densities and biomass of the ichthyofauna and of the two selected species were observed in both summer and winter over the three decades, coinciding with increases in temperatures. These decreases were correlated with increases in positive anomalies of temperature, which may be an indicator of climatic changes, although with low explanation of the data variation. The mean size of L. castaneus decreased between the nineties and 2010, whereas no significant trend was found for the size of G. brasiliensis. Our predictions of new area for future adequacy indicated a loss in the distribution area for both species (mainly for G. brasiliensis), considering the most pessimistic scenario for 2050 and 2070, possibly due to climatic changes. Both hydroelectric dams and global warming pose threats to freshwater fish diversity, and both will interact. Changes observed in the fish assemblage over the last decades were essential for an assessment of the consequences of global warming in this type of reservoir combining larger scale studies with future projections. Industrial wastewater and agricultural practices are among the main activities discharging organic pollutants, such as Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners and organochlorine insecticides (e.g. DDT - dichloro diphenyl trichloroethane), to the environment. In this study, we used the native Cichlidae fish species Geophagus brasiliensis as a sentinel to evaluate the hepatic 7-ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase EROD activity, a biomarker of exposure to CYP1A-inducing pollutants, to assess the bioavailability of xenobiotics in two reaches of a large lotic system in Southeast Brazil: a less disturbed area (site 1) in the upper stretch, and an area in the middle stretch, which receives various industrial and agricultural effluents from upstream cities (site 2). In addition, G. brasiliensis were exposed to a single dose of 50 mg kg-1 betanaphthoflavone (BNF) or of 50 mg kg-1 dimethylbenzoanthracene (DMBA) to test the effects on, respectively, the hepatic EROD activity in S9 supernatant fraction, and the frequency of micronucleated erythrocytes three days after the i.p. treatments, and compared to an unexposed group, to test its potential as a sentinel for biomonitoring studies. The EROD activity was approximately two-fold higher in fish from the impacted stretches than in fish from the less disturbed stretches (p < 0.05). Micronuclei (MN) frequency was also significantly different (p < 0.01) in DMBA-treated fish. The induced EROD activity in the impacted site suggests that organochlorinated pollutants are reaching the biota of the Paraíba do Sul River, confirming the suitability of Geophagus brasiliensis as a useful sentinel species to detect changes caused by xenobiotics. Estuarine shallow waters have many habitats favouring the colonization and establishment of different fish species. Our study investigated the variability in the composition of these communities by examining beta diversity and evaluated the relationship between fish beta diversity and environmental heterogeneity, which can be dependent on the level of human alteration to which an ecosystem is exposed. Our goal is to provide insights not only on the biodiversity, but also to help develop effective conservation measures. We sampled fish and environmental variables (physicochemical water variables and sediment nutrients and granulometry) in three zones (inner, middle and outer) of Sepetiba Bay, in Southeastern Brazil. The aims of our study were to compare fish communities in the different zones by using beta diversity and to investigate the relationship between environmental heterogeneity and beta diversity. Habitat conditions varied considerably among the zones. Relationships between species and environmental conditions were species-specific, and a weak positive correlation between environmental heterogeneity and beta diversity was found. The highest beta diversity was detected in the inner bay zone, suggesting that relatively more urbanized areas had greater environmental heterogeneity and, thus, higher beta diversity. Our results serve as a 'caution' to reduce the urbanization effects on these environments that sometimes can increase habitat heterogeneity and species richness. The 'weak' relationship suggest that the ecosystems may have been in the 'early stages' of human influences and managers should take into account that anthropogenic impacts would reduce beta diversity because continued degradation would lead to natural habitat reduction. Coronavirus Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV-2) is a very recent viral infection and has generated one of the world's biggest problems of all time. There is no scientific evidence and clinical trials to indicate that possible therapies have shown results in suspected or confirmed patients other than the use of immunizations. Given the above, some substances are being studied to be applied to contain their spread and further damage. This work aims to perform an in silico study of amoxicillin, widely known as an antibiotic and used to prevent bacterial infections and a possible biomarker made from a complex with Europium (Eu). It was shown to have the ability to interact with the COVID-19 protein in Mpro protease as ligands. The study was conducted using the AutoDock Vina with Lamarckian genetic model algorithm (GA) combined with the estimation of grid-based energy in rigid and flexible conformation. Compared to affinity energy, amoxicillin presented − 7. 7 kcal/mol, which was better than its co-crystallized ligand in the study. The Europium complex, where its synthesis was also demonstrated in this work, presented energy of − 6. 3 kcal/mol with hydrogen bonds and possible color change when UV light was applied. For the choice of the best poses in the simulation, the neural network parameter, NNScore2, was used. It can be affirmed that this study is still introductory but promising both in the treatment and identification of the virus. The Europium complex, where its synthesis was also demonstrated in this work, presented energy of –6.3 Kcal/mol with hydrogen bonds and possible color change when UV light was applied. For the choice of the best poses in the molecular docking simulation, the neural network parameter, NNScore2, was used. The reproductive strategy of the non‐native predator cichlid Cichla kelberi was determined to explain its success after more than 60 years of being introduced into an isolated reservoir in southeastern Brazil. This was one of the first‐known translocations of the genus Cichla out of its natural range. Macro‐ and microscopy characteristics of the gonadal development stages and the maturation phases, along with the reproductive features (size at first maturation size, gonado‐somatic index and sex ratio), were described. It was hypothesized that the stable conditions of the reservoir, with low connectivity, weakly defined spatial gradient and slight seasonal changes in environmental variables, favour the equilibrium strategy that enables predators to have high offspring survivorship because of great parental investment in individual progeny. Sex ratio was well balanced, with males and females reaching first maturity between 30.0 and 28.6 cm total length (LT), respectively. The stages of oocyte (primary and secondary growth, vitellogenic and atresia) and spermatocyte (spermatogonia, spermatocytes, spermatids and spermatozoa) development were identified. Five phases of gonadal development (immature, developing, spawning capable, regressing and regenerating) were described for both sexes. A long reproductive season was found, with spawning peaks in August/September and, to a lesser extent, in April/May. Parental care and spawns in parcels (batch spawns) corroborated the raised equilibrium strategy that was effective in this isolated reservoir. This species developed reproductive mechanisms that fit to different environmental conditions, with multiple spawning being associated with lentic environments and asynchronous development of oocytes, which are released over long periods. The reproductive plasticity in reservoirs may be one of the main factors inherent to the successful of colonization and establishment of the peacock bass in the environments in which they were introduced. The introduction of non-native predator fish is thought to have important negative effects on native prey populations. Opsanus beta is a non-native toadfish that was originally described in the Gulf of Mexico, between the west coast of Florida and Belize. In the present study, we describe, for the first time, the occurrence of O. beta in Sepetiba Bay (22°55′S), south-eastern Brazil, probably brought into the bay through ships' ballast water. Thirteen specimens were recorded in this area near to Sepetiba Port. Similarly, three other records of this species in the Brazilian coast were also reported near to port areas at Rio de Janeiro (22°49′S), Santos (23°59′S) and Paranaguá (25°33′S) ports. To confirm the species identity, we employed DNA barcoding and compared our samples with sequences deposited on public databases, which indicated that our samples are highly similar (>99.9% of genetic similarity) to O. beta samples collected near its type locality. Several individuals were found in the capable spawning phase, according to histological analysis of the reproductive cell stages. The environmental plasticity of this species and the favourable local environmental conditions probably enabled the establishment of O. beta in this region. Fish and benthic invertebrates are important groups that inhabit shallow coastal areas. Many studies use these two groups separately to answer questions related to environmental relationships, but few assess the correlation between these two groups. This study aimed to assess correlation between richness and composition of fish and benthic invertebrate assemblages and to evaluate their responses to environmental variables in sandy beaches in a tropical coastal area in south-eastern Brazil. We tested for a correlation between fish and benthic invertebrates and evaluated which environmental variables influenced each group. Fish and invertebrate taxonomic richness were not correlated across sites. In addition, the two groups were not significantly correlated, even after controlling the effects of the environmental variables. The taxonomic richness of the two groups were influenced by different set of environmental drivers: fish were influenced mainly by the physicochemical variables, being positively correlated with salinity and dissolved oxygen, and negatively with temperature, whereas invertebrates richness were related mainly to granulometric variables, decreasing in fine and very fine sediment. Fish and invertebrate showed similar patterns with more influence of environmental variables than biotic variables that had comparatively more effects on the invertebrate than on the fish assemblage. Spatial segregation in species distribution along the beaches were found with the Gerreid fish predominating in semi-exposed beaches whereas the sparid Diplodus argenteus, the haemulid Orthopristis ruber and the clupeids Harengula clupeola and Sardinella brasiliensis predominated in the exposed beaches. The Polychaetae families Syllidae and Dorvilleidae, and isopod of the family Cirolanidae predominated in semi-protect beaches, whereas polychaetas of the families Glyceridae and Saccocirridae predominated in the exposed beaches. In this study, we showed that fish and benthic invertebrates are influenced by different environmental variables in tropical sandy beaches and no significant correlation was found between these two taxonomic groups. Our findings are a step to a better understanding of the fish-benthic invertebrate relationship and a contribution to management policies aiming the conservation of tropical coastal areas. Introduction: Hypoglycemia leading to hospitalization is associated with adverse economic outcomes, although the real burden is unknown. The HIPOS-WARD (Hypoglycemia In Portugal Observational Study-Ward) aimed to characterize ward admissions due to hypoglycemia episodes in treated patients with diabetes and assess their economic impact to the National Health System. Methods: Observational, cross-sectional study, conducted in 16 Portuguese centers for 22 months. The applied microcosting approach was based on healthcare resource data, collected from patients' charts upon ward admission until discharge, and unitary costs from official/public data sources. Absenteeism was also estimated for active workers on the basis of the human capital approach. Results: Of the 176 patients with diabetes mellitus enrolled, 86% had type 2 diabetes. Half of the patients (50.0%) were on insulin-based therapy, followed by 30.1% on a secretagogue-based regimen, 9.7% on non-secretagogue therapy, and 10.2% on a combination of insulin and secretagogue. Overall mean costs per patient were medication, 45.45 €; laboratory analysis, 218.14 €; examinations, 64.91 €; physician and nurse time, 268.55 € and 673.39 €, respectively. Bed occupancy was the main cost driver (772.09 €) and indirect cost averaged 140.44 €. Overall, the cost per hypoglycemia episode leading to hospitalization averaged 2042.52 € (range 194.76–16,762.87 €). Patients treated with insulin-based regimens (2267.76 €) and type 2 diabetes (2051.29 €) had the highest mean costs. The mean cost increased with repeated hypoglycemic events (2191.67 €), correlated complications (2109.26 €), and death (5253.38 €). Conclusion: HIPOS-WARD's findings confirm and support both the substantial clinical and economic impact of hospitalization due to hypoglycemia in Portugal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biological invasions are considered an extreme risk to biodiversity, resulting in serious ecological and economic problems. Marine species have been introduced mainly through ballast water in estuaries, bays and inland waters, those bodies are historically threatened by intense urbanization making them highly susceptible to invasions. The gulf toadfish, Opsanus beta has been reported as an invasive species that commonly inhabits shallow water bodies, such as coastal bays and estuaries. Its native distribution range from Belize to Palm Beach -- Florida (Gulf of Mexico). The first occurrence of O. beta on the Brazilian coast was in Santos estuarine area, Southeastern region, and the second was further south, in the estuarine complex of Paranaguá, Southern region. Here we report the first occurrence of a single O. beta in Rio de Janeiro coast, which was caught in October 2017, using a beach seine in Bica Beach, a polluted sandy beach located in Guanabara Bay -- RJ. Considering the similarities among Guanabara Bay and other areas in Brazil, there is a potential for the establishment of O. beta populations in Guanabara Bay in a near future. The native fishes of the Neotropical region have been heavily impacted by the construction of reservoirs that block the rivers in different degrees. Small Hydroelectric Power Plants (SHPP) have been an alternative way to take advantage of small electricity production potential, with low cost. However, there is no basis in the belief that SHPP have less deleterious effects on river habitat than large hydropower plants. The aim of this study was to evaluate eventual changes in the ichthyofauna because of the influences of SHPP in the middle reaches of a tropical river in south-eastern Brazil. The raised hypothesis is that SHPP change the ichthyofauna composition and increase the taxonomic and functional similarities (homogenization). Fish collections were carried out quarterly at six locations along a 20 km stretch of the Paraíba do Sul River, before and after the construction of the SHPP. The fish community structure changed between the two periods, with a decrease in the fish numerical abundance, whereas the species richness did not change. Sensitive species with specialized feeding habits (namely, Hartia loricariformis, Steindachineridium parahybae, Hypomasticus mormirops, Characidium alipioi, Chyphocharax gilbert, Corydoras nattereri and Pogonopoma parahybae) occurred only before the SHPP, being replaced by several species of Characiformes, among them four of genus Astyanax (namely, A. giton, A. hastatus, A. taeniatus, and A. intemedium) that are tolerant and omnivores; however, most of functional traits were maintained. The taxonomic dissimilarity increased significantly, whereas the functional dissimilarity did not differ between the two periods. Fragmentation and interconnection of water bodies cause severe changes in the natural flow regime of continental water systems. However, assessments of these impacts on the freshwater fish distribution are still scarce. We investigated whether an artificial flow regime generated by discharges from an aqueduct would promote a longitudinal environmental gradient in an off-river reservoir. We tested the hypothesis that the incoming water from aqueduct discharges promotes environmental gradient between lotic and lentic conditions. We expect that environmental changes and the artificial flow regime promote the structuring of fish assemblage and that the lotic-lentic transition areas present the highest fish species richness. A longitudinal gradient in environmental characteristics with differing fish assemblage structure was found. Temporal changes in the fish assemblages occurred only in areas near the discharge of the aqueduct. The highest fish richness and diversity were recorded in the transition zone during the wet season, associated with the greater environmental heterogeneity of this ecotone, whereas the lowest was found in the lotic zone, probably associated with the altered flow regime. The greatest abundance was recorded in the upper lentic zone in the wet season, whereas the lowest was found in the lower lentic zone in both seasons. Our results corroborate the hypothesis that the artificial flow regime, modulated by the seasonality of discharges and the influence of environmental variables, promotes longitudinal gradients in reservoirs when rivers are not present. Coastal ecosystems can vary considerably in their habitat characteristics and environmental conditions, resulting in divergent fish community structures. However, comparisons among coastal systems, such as oceanic beaches, bays and coastal lagoons, have not been thoroughly evaluated. We test the hypothesis that coastal systems that differ in wave exposure, habitat structure, salinity gradients and productivity show different assemblages and feeding guilds. The fish assemblages were significantly different among the systems. The bays had the largest number of species, whereas the lagoons had the highest numerical abundance and biomass. The planktivorous guild dominated in numerical abundance in all systems, whereas the opportunists dominated in biomass. The benthivores contributed greatly in abundance to the bays, the opportunists to the coastal lagoons, and the hyperbenthivores to the oceanic beaches. Water transparency and temperature explained a small portion of the variation in the community structure. This study highlighted the complex role that local factors have on the distribution of fishes at the species and trophic levels. These approaches were efficient to describe the structure and functioning of the assemblages in these different coastal systems.
