Natural disasters such as bushfires are a test of individual and group resilience, and in extreme cases, threaten the sustainability of communities. Bushfires have long been common in Australia, although anthropogenic climate change has exacerbated their prevalence and severity. The aim of the present study was to assess the individual resilience and disaster-specific adaptation and resilience of community members in the wake of a bushfire event. Using a quantitative, cross-sectional design, an adult community sample of 165 residents of Noosa Shire in regional Queensland, Australia completed the 25-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC©) and the 43-item Disaster Adaptation and Resilience Scale (DARS). Mean scores for the CD-RISC© indicated significantly greater resilience (p < 0.001) than reported previously for a large Australian community cohort. Similarly, the DARS scores indicated significantly greater adaptation and resilience (p < 0.001) than that of a comparable cohort in the USA. The two oldest groups of residents (66+ years and 51–65 years) reported significantly greater adaptation and resilience than the group of younger residents (≤50 years; p < 0.001). The study findings provide the Noosa Shire community with an objective baseline from which they can assess the efficacy of future resilience-building initiatives and, more broadly, offer a valuable point of reference for future disaster-related research. The number of Australians subject to coercive interventions in community mental health services continues to increase. This is in the context of a growing awareness of the harms from coercion, increasing concerns about potential breaches of human rights and an ongoing uncertainty regarding the clinical benefits of community treatment orders, the primary instrument of legislated coercion in community mental health services. Nurses in community mental health services are on the frontline with regard to coercion. They police the requirements of the community treatment order, administer medication to people in community settings without their consent and facilitate re‐hospitalisation if indicated. Coercive practice contradicts the person‐centred, recovery‐oriented and trauma‐informed care principles that inform contemporary mental health nursing. This contradiction may generate ethical challenges for nurses and result in ethical distress. The aim of this scoping review was to map the research literature on how nurses in community mental health settings recognise and manage the harm associated with the administration of coercive interventions and consider the ethical challenges that may arise within this practice. The search strategy yielded 562 studies with author consensus determining a total of three articles as meeting the inclusion criteria. The resulting literature identified three themes: (1) maintaining the therapeutic relationship, (2) promoting autonomy and (3) using subtle forms of control. This review demonstrated that there is minimal research that has considered the ethical challenges related to the use of coercion by nurses in community mental health settings. Extreme heat and poor air quality arising from landscape fires are an increasing global concern driven by anthropogenic climate change. Previous studies have shown these environmental conditions are associated with negative health outcomes for vulnerable people. Managing and adapting to these conditions in a warming climate can present substantial difficulties, especially in climates already challenging for human habitation. This study was set in the tropical city of Darwin, Australia. We recruited individuals from population groups vulnerable to outdoor hazards: outdoor workers, teachers and carers, and sportspeople, to participate in focus group discussions. We aimed to gain an understanding of the impacts of extreme heat and poor air quality and how individuals perceived and managed these environmental conditions. We identified a number of key themes relating to impacts on health, work and activity, and adaptive behaviors, while identifying gaps in policy and infrastructure that could improve the lives and protect the health of vulnerable people living, working, and playing in this region. In addition, these outcomes potentially provide direction for other regions with similar environmental challenges. Introduction: Pedal‐assisted electric‐bikes (e‐bikes) are bicycles fitted with electric motors. Motorised functions on e‐bikes only operate when the user pedals, allowing riders a moderate amount of physical activity. This study aimed to explore the mental and physical health and well‐being impacts related to ebike usage for inactive overweight or obese individuals living in regional Australia. Methods: Twenty inactive, overweight/obese people who seldom cycled were provided with an ebike over a 12‐week period. Individual semi‐structured interviews conducted at the end of the trial generated data about participants' experiences of using ebikes. Inductive thematic analysis of interview data using Thomas (2006) data analysis framework and NVivo 12 software was undertaken. Results: Data analysis revealed that e‐cycling improved participants' mental and physical well‐being and that they felt happier when riding an e‐bike. Conclusions: Riding an e‐bike can improve mental and physical health, happiness and overall sense of well‐being. Greater uptake of e‐bikes would have positive health implications for the wider community. Results from this study can be used to inform active transport policy. Aim: This discussion paper poses the question 'What enables or deters Registered Nurses to take up their professional responsibility to support undergraduate nursing students through the provision of clinical education?'. Background: Embedded within many nursing standards are expectations that Registered Nurses provide support and professional development to undergraduate nursing students undertaking clinical placements. Expectations within nursing standards that Registered Nurses provide support and professional development to nursing students are important because nursing students depend on Registered Nurses to help them to become competent practitioners. Results: Contributing factors that enable and deter Registered Nurses from fulfilling this expectation to support nursing students in their clinical learning include; workloads, preparedness for the teaching role, confidence in teaching and awareness of the competency requirement to support students. Conclusion: Factors exist which can enable or deter Registered Nurses from carrying out the licence requirement to provide clinical education and support to nursing students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reports on a case study of the community group Zero Emissions Noosa, whose goal is for 100% renewable electricity in the Noosa Shire (Queensland, Australia) by 2026. Described within this paper are the processes used by Zero Emissions Noosa to set up their zero emissions plan, involving community engagement and the use of an external consultant. The external consultant was employed to produce a detailed report outlining how to successfully achieve zero emissions from electricity in the Noosa Shire by 2026. This paper explains how and why the community engagement process used to produce the report was just as important as the outcomes of the report itself. Modeling was undertaken, and both detailed and contextual information was provided. Inclusion of the community in developing the scenario parameters for the modeling had a number of benefits including establishing the context within which their actions would occur and focusing their efforts on options that were technically feasible, financially viable and within their capabilities to implement. This provided a focal point for the community in calling meetings and contacting stakeholders. Rather than prescribing a particular course of action, it also resulted in a toolbox of options, a range of possible solutions that is flexible enough to fit into whatever actions are preferred by the community. The approach and outcomes discussed in this paper should, therefore, be useful to other communities with similar carbon emission reduction goals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
