We present the KODIAQ-Z survey aimed to characterize the cool, photoionized gas at 2.2 ≲ z ≲ 3.6 in 202 H i -selected absorbers with 14.6 ≤ log N H I < 20 that probe the interface between galaxies and the intergalactic medium (IGM). We find that gas with 14.6 ≤ log N H I < 20 at 2.2 ≲ z ≲ 3.6 can be metal-rich (âˆ'1.6 ≲ [X/H] ≲ âˆ' 0.2) as seen in damped Ly α absorbers (DLAs); it can also be very metal-poor ([X/H] < âˆ' 2.4) or even pristine ([X/H] < âˆ' 3.8), which is not observed in DLAs but is common in the IGM. For 16 < log N H I < 20 absorbers, the frequency of pristine absorbers is about 1%â€"10%, while for 14.6 ≤ log N H I ≤ 16 absorbers it is 10%â€"20%, similar to the diffuse IGM. Supersolar gas is extremely rare (<1%) at these redshifts. The factor of several thousand spread from the lowest to highest metallicities and large metallicity variations (a factor of a few to >100) between absorbers separated by less than Î" v < 500 km sâˆ'1 imply that the metals are poorly mixed in 14.6 ≤ log N H I < 20 gas. We show that these photoionized absorbers contribute to about 14% of the cosmic baryons and 45% of the cosmic metals at 2.2 ≲ z ≲ 3.6. We find that the mean metallicity increases with N H i , consistent with what is found in z < 1 gas. The metallicity of gas in this column density regime has increased by a factor ∼8 from 2.2 ≲ z ≲ 3.6 to z < 1, but the contribution of the 14.6 ≤ log N H I < 19 absorbers to the total metal budget of the universe at z < 1 is a quarter of that at 2.2 ≲ z ≲ 3.6. We show that FOGGIE cosmological zoom-in simulations have a similar evolution of [X/H] with N H i , which is not observed in lower-resolution simulations. In these simulations, very metal-poor absorbers with [X/H] < âˆ' 2.4 at z ∼ 2â€"3 are tracers of inflows, while higher-metallicity absorbers are a mixture of inflows and outflows. Upcoming space-based integral field spectrographs will enable spatially resolved spectroscopy of distant galaxies, including at the scale of individual star-forming regions (i.e., down to just tens of parsecs) in galaxies that have been strongly gravitationally lensed. In the meantime, there is only a very small set of lensed galaxies where such spatial detail is possible at wavelengths containing important rest-optical emission lines, even with the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Camera 3 infrared channel grisms. Here, we examine two of these sources, SDSS J1723+3411 and SDSS J2340+2947, using HST WFC3/IR grism data and supporting spatially unresolved spectroscopy from several ground-based instruments to explore the size of spatial variations in observed strong emission-line ratios like O32 and R23, which are sensitive to ionization parameter and metallicity, and the Balmer decrement, which is an indicator of reddening. We find significant spatial variation in the reddening and in the reddening-corrected O32 and R23 values that correspond to spreads of a few tenths of a dex in ionization parameter and metallicity. We also find clear evidence of a negative radial gradient in star formation in SDSS J2340+2947 and tentative evidence of one in SDSS J1723+3411, though its star formation is quite asymmetric. Finally, we find that reddening can vary enough spatially to make spatially resolved reddening corrections necessary in order to characterize gradients in line ratios and the physical conditions inferred from them, necessitating the use of space-based integral field units for future work on larger, more statistically robust samples. In addition to the well-known gas phase mass–metallicity relation (MZR), recent spatially resolved observations have shown that local galaxies also obey a mass–metallicity gradient relation (MZGR), whereby metallicity gradients can vary systematically with galaxy mass. In this work, we use our recently developed analytic model for metallicity distributions in galactic discs, which includes a wide range of physical processes – radial advection, metal diffusion, cosmological accretion, and metal-enriched outflows – to simultaneously analyse the MZR and MZGR. We show that the same physical principles govern the shape of both: centrally peaked metal production favours steeper gradients, and this steepening is diluted by the addition of metal-poor gas, which is supplied by inward advection for low-mass galaxies and by cosmological accretion for massive galaxies. The MZR and the MZGR both bend at galaxy stellar mass |$\sim 10^{10}{-}10^{10.5}\, \rm {M_{\odot }}$|⁠ , and we show that this feature corresponds to the transition of galaxies from the advection-dominated to the accretion-dominated regime. We also find that both the MZR and MZGR strongly suggest that low-mass galaxies preferentially lose metals entrained in their galactic winds. While this metal-enrichment of the galactic outflows is crucial for reproducing both the MZR and the MZGR at the low-mass end, we show that the flattening of gradients in massive galaxies is expected regardless of the nature of their winds. We present a new model for the evolution of gas phase metallicity gradients in galaxies from first principles. We show that metallicity gradients depend on four ratios that collectively describe the metal equilibration time-scale, production, transport, consumption, and loss. Our model finds that most galaxy metallicity gradients are in equilibrium at all redshifts. When normalized by metal diffusion, metallicity gradients are governed by the competition between radial advection, metal production, and accretion of metal-poor gas from the cosmic web. The model naturally explains the varying gradients measured in local spirals, local dwarfs, and high-redshift star-forming galaxies. We use the model to study the cosmic evolution of gradients across redshift, showing that the gradient in Milky Way-like galaxies has steepened over time, in good agreement with both observations and simulations. We also predict the evolution of metallicity gradients with redshift in galaxy samples constructed using both matched stellar masses and matched abundances. Our model shows that massive galaxies transition from the advection-dominated to the accretion-dominated regime from high to low redshifts, which mirrors the transition from gravity-driven to star formation feedback-driven turbulence. Lastly, we show that gradients in local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (major mergers) and inverted gradients seen both in the local and high-redshift galaxies may not be in equilibrium. In subsequent papers in this series, we show that the model also explains the observed relationship between galaxy mass and metallicity gradients, and between metallicity gradients and galaxy kinematics. Metallicity gradients are important diagnostics of galaxy evolution, because they record the history of events such as mergers, gas inflow, and star formation. However, the accuracy with which gradients can be measured is limited by spatial resolution and noise, and hence, measurements need to be corrected for such effects. We use high-resolution (∼20 pc) simulation of a face-on Milky Way mass galaxy, coupled with photoionization models, to produce a suite of synthetic high-resolution integral field spectroscopy (IFS) datacubes. We then degrade the datacubes, with a range of realistic models for spatial resolution (2−16 beams per galaxy scale length) and noise, to investigate and quantify how well the input metallicity gradient can be recovered as a function of resolution and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) with the intention to compare with modern IFS surveys like MaNGA and SAMI. Given appropriate propagation of uncertainties and pruning of low SNR pixels, we show that a resolution of 3–4 telescope beams per galaxy scale length is sufficient to recover the gradient to ∼10–20 per cent uncertainty. The uncertainty escalates to ∼60 per cent for lower resolution. Inclusion of the low SNR pixels causes the uncertainty in the inferred gradient to deteriorate. Our results can potentially inform future IFS surveys regarding the resolution and SNR required to achieve a desired accuracy in metallicity gradient measurements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We examine the diagnostic power of rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) nebular emission lines, and compare them to more commonly used rest-frame optical emission lines, using the test case of a single star-forming knot of the bright lensed galaxy RCSGA 032727–132609 at redshift |$z$|  ∼ 1.7. This galaxy has complete coverage of all the major rest-frame UV and optical emission lines from Magellan/MagE and Keck/NIRSPEC. Using the full suite of diagnostic lines, we infer the physical properties: nebular electron temperature (T e), electron density (n e), oxygen abundance (log (O/H), ionization parameter [log (q), and interstellar medium (ISM) pressure (log (P / k)]. We examine the effectiveness of the different UV, optical, and joint UV–optical spectra in constraining the physical conditions. Using UV lines alone we can reliably estimate log (q), but the same is difficult for log (O/H). UV lines yield a higher (∼1.5 dex) log (P / k) than the optical lines, as the former probes a further inner nebular region than the latter. For this comparison, we extend the existing Bayesian inference code izi , adding to it the capability to infer ISM pressure simultaneously with metallicity and ionization parameter. This work anticipates future rest-frame UV spectral data sets from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) at high redshift and from the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) at moderate redshift. The Epoch of Reionization (EoR) 21-cm signal is expected to become increasingly non-Gaussian as reionization proceeds. We have used seminumerical simulations to study how this affects the error predictions for the EoR 21-cm power spectrum. We expect SNR = √Nk for a Gaussian random field where Nk is the number of Fourier modes in each k bin. We find that non-Gaussianity is important at high SNR where it imposes an upper limit [SNR]l. For a fixed volume V, it is not possible to achieve SNR > [SNR]l even if Nk is increased. The value of [SNR]l falls as reionization proceeds, dropping from ~500 at xHI = 0.8-0.9 to ~ 10 at xHI = 0.15 for a [150.08 Mpc]³ simulation. We show that it is possible to interpret [SNR]l in terms of the trispectrum, and we expect [SNR]l ∝√V if the volume is increased. For SNR ≪ [SNR]l we find SNR = √Nk/A with A ~ 0.95-1.75, roughly consistent with the Gaussian prediction. We present a fitting formula for the SNR as a function of Nk, with two parameters A and [SNR]l that have to be determined using simulations. Our results are relevant for predicting the sensitivity of different instruments to measure the EoR 21-cm power spectrum, which till date have been largely based on the Gaussian assumption.
