We have investigated, using molecular dynamics, the surface chemistry of hydrogen incident on the amorphous and crystalline lithium oxide and lithium hydroxide surfaces upon being slowed down by a collision cascade and retained in the amorphous surface of either Li2O or LiOH. We looked for the bonding of H to the resident structures in the surface to understand a possible chain of chemical reactions that can lead to surface transformation upon H atom impact. Our findings, using Density-Functional Theory (DFT) trained ReaxFF force field/electronegativity equalization method potentials, stress the importance of inclusion of polarization in the dynamics of a Li–O–H system, which is also illustrated by DFT energy minimization and quantum–classical molecular dynamics using tight binding DFT. The resulting polar-covalent chemistry of the studied systems is complex and very sensitive to the instantaneous positions of all atoms as well as the ratio of concentrations of various resident atoms in the surface. We have used a combination of pico-to-nano temporal/spatial scale computational physics and chemistry modeling of plasma–material interfaces in the tokamak fusion plasma edges to unravel the evolving characteristics, not readily accessible by empirical means, of lithium-, oxygen-, and hydrogen-containing materials of plasma-facing components under irradiation by hydrogen and its isotopes. In the present calculation, amorphous lithium compound surfaces containing oxygen, Li2O, and LiOH were irradiated by 1–100 eV particles at incident angles on the surface ranging from perpendicular to almost grazing angles. Consequential surface processes, reflection, retention, and sputtering were studied at "the same footing" and compared to earlier results from amorphous Li and LiH surfaces. The critical role of charging dynamics of lithium, oxygen, and hydrogen atoms in the surface chemistry during hydrogen-fuel irradiation was found to drive the kinetics and dynamics of these surfaces in unexpected ways that ultimately could have profound effects on fusion plasma confinement behavior and surface erosion. Aims. We present the first multiwavelength study of Mrk 501 that contains simultaneous very-high-energy (VHE) γ-ray observations and X-ray polarization measurements from the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). Methods. We used radio-to-VHE data from a multiwavelength campaign carried out between March 1, 2022, and July 19, 2022 (MJD 59639 to MJD 59779). The observations were performed by MAGIC, Fermi-LAT, NuSTAR, Swift (XRT and UVOT), and several other instruments that cover the optical and radio bands to complement the IXPE pointings. We characterized the dynamics of the broadband emission around the X-ray polarization measurements through its multiband fractional variability and correlations, and compared changes observed in the polarization degree to changes seen in the broadband emission using a multi-zone leptonic scenario. Results. During the IXPE pointings, the VHE state is close to the average behavior, with a 0.2–1 TeV flux of 20%–50% of the emission of the Crab Nebula. Additionally, it shows low variability and a hint of correlation between VHE γ-rays and X-rays. Despite the average VHE activity, an extreme X-ray behavior is measured for the first two IXPE pointings, taken in March 2022 (MJD 59646 to 59648 and MJD 59665 to 59667), with a synchrotron peak frequency > 1 keV. For the third IXPE pointing, in July 2022 (MJD 59769 to 59772), the synchrotron peak shifts toward lower energies and the optical/X-ray polarization degrees drop. All three IXPE epochs show an atypically low Compton dominance in the γ-rays. The X-ray polarization is systematically higher than at lower energies, suggesting an energy stratification of the jet. While during the IXPE epochs the polarization angles in the X-ray, optical, and radio bands align well, we find a clear discrepancy in the optical and radio polarization angles in the middle of the campaign. Such results further support the hypothesis of an energy-stratified jet. We modeled broadband spectra taken simultaneous to the IXPE pointings, assuming a compact zone that dominates in the X-rays and the VHE band, and an extended zone stretching farther downstream in the jet that dominates the emission at lower energies. NuSTAR data allow us to precisely constrain the synchrotron peak and therefore the underlying electron distribution. The change between the different states observed in the three IXPE pointings can be explained by a change in the magnetization and/or the emission region size, which directly connects the shift in the synchrotron peak to lower energies with the drop in the polarization degree. In recent years, a new generation of optical intensity interferometers has emerged, leveraging the existing infrastructure of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). The MAGIC telescopes host the MAGIC-SII system (Stellar Intensity Interferometer), implemented to investigate the feasibility and potential of this technique on IACTs. After the first successful measurements in 2019, the system was upgraded and now features a real-time, dead-time-free, 4-channel, GPU-based correlator. These hardware modifications allow seamless transitions between MAGIC's standard very-high-energy gamma-ray observations and optical interferometry measurements within seconds. We establish the feasibility and potential of employing IACTs as competitive optical Intensity Interferometers with minimal hardware adjustments. The measurement of a total of 22 stellar diameters are reported, 9 corresponding to reference stars with previous comparable measurements, and 13 with no prior measurements. A prospective implementation involving telescopes from the forthcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory's Northern hemisphere array, such as the first prototype of its Large-Sized Telescopes, LST-1, is technically viable. This integration would significantly enhance the sensitivity of the current system and broaden the UV-plane coverage. This advancement would enable the system to achieve competitive sensitivity with the current generation of long-baseline optical interferometers over blue wavelengths. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Environmental pollution is a pressing and widespread issue in contemporary society that necessitates innovative solutions to meet the growing demand for clean water resources. One crucial development in the realm of nanomaterials involves the creation of multifunctional materials with specific adsorption properties and ease of recovery, which are integral to water purification efforts. Among these materials, magnetic nanocarriers have emerged as a versatile and efficient means of immobilizing target pollutants for water decontamination. Their effectiveness stems from their expansive surface area, relatively straightforward fabrication, and diverse applications, particularly in environmental remediation processes. This comprehensive review aims to delve into the various classes of magnetic carriers and their roles in removing contaminants from water sources. Each class is examined critically, providing insights into synthesis methodologies, accompanied by noteworthy examples from the literature, and an exploration of the significant contributions these materials offer to the field. Through this review, we seek to provide a thorough understanding of the use of magnetic nanocarriers in addressing the crucial issue of water pollution and highlight their potential to play a pivotal role in achieving cleaner and more sustainable water resources for our growing population. We report the first observation of global recycling coefficient R near 0.5 in the Lithium Tokamak eXperiment-β (LTX-β), significantly below the minimum R previously reported in other devices. In a series of experiments with varied Li wall conditioning, estimates of the recycling coefficient have been made using a Lyman-α array and DEGAS2 modeling. A progressive reduction in Lyman-α emission with increased lithium and an increase in edge electron temperature are observed. It is also observed that with increasing Li coating thickness, the effective particle confinement time τ p * is reduced and approaches TRANSP calculated energy confinement time (τE), with τ p * near τ E , TRANSP for the lowest recycling coefficients. Edge temperatures approaching core plasma temperatures, first reported in LTX, can now be directly connected to estimates of the recycling coefficient and qualitatively agree with previous UEDGE simulations. The particle flux to the limiting surfaces appears to be significantly reduced in comparison with fluid scrape-off layer (SOL) models, indicating that a large fraction of the SOL ions are mirror trapped. SOL collisionality drops more than an order of magnitude below the banana regime boundary, indicating the importance of kinetic effects. Full-f 1x2v gyrokinetic simulations of SOL field lines with the GKEYLL code indicate that the fraction of ions trapped along field lines increases as collisionality drops, as a result of increased lithium evaporation. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are explosive transient events occurring at cosmological distances, releasing a large amount of energy as electromagnetic radiation over several energy bands. We report the detection of the long GRB 201216C by the MAGIC telescopes. The source is located at z  = 1.1 and thus it is the farthest one detected at very high energies. The emission above 70 GeV of GRB 201216C is modelled together with multiwavelength data within a synchrotron and synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) scenario. We find that SSC can explain the broad-band data well from the optical to the very-high-energy band. For the late-time radio data, a different component is needed to account for the observed emission. Differently from previous GRBs detected in the very-high-energy range, the model for GRB 201216C strongly favours a wind-like medium. The model parameters have values similar to those found in past studies of the afterglows of GRBs detected up to GeV energies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims. The BL Lac 1ES 2344+514 is known for temporary extreme properties characterised by a shift of the synchrotron spectral energy distribution (SED) peak energy νsynch, p above 1 keV. While those extreme states have only been observed during high flux levels thus far, additional multi-year observing campaigns are required to achieve a coherent picture. Here, we report the longest investigation of the source from radio to very high energy (VHE) performed so far, focussing on a systematic characterisation of the intermittent extreme states. Methods. We organised a monitoring campaign covering a 3-year period from 2019 to 2021. More than ten instruments participated in the observations in order to cover the emission from radio to VHE. In particular, sensitive X-ray measurements by XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and AstroSat took place simultaneously with multi-hour MAGIC observations, providing an unprecedented constraint of the two SED components for this blazar. Results. While our results confirm that 1ES 2344+514 typically exhibits νsynch, p > 1 keV during elevated flux periods, we also find periods where the extreme state coincides with low flux activity. A strong spectral variability thus happens in the quiescent state, and is likely caused by an increase in the electron acceleration efficiency without a change in the electron injection luminosity. On the other hand, we also report a strong X-ray flare (among the brightest for 1ES 2344+514) without a significant shift of νsynch, p. During this particular flare, the X-ray spectrum is among the softest of the campaign. It unveils complexity in the spectral evolution, where the common harder-when-brighter trend observed in BL Lacs is violated. By combining Swift-XRT and Swift-UVOT measurements during a low and hard X-ray state, we find an excess of the UV flux with respect to an extrapolation of the X-ray spectrum to lower energies. This UV excess implies that at least two regions significantly contribute to the infrared/optical/ultraviolet/X-ray emission. Using the simultaneous MAGIC, XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and AstroSat observations, we argue that a region possibly associated with the 10 GHz radio core may explain such an excess. Finally, we investigate a VHE flare, showing an absence of simultaneous variability in the 0.3−2 keV band. Using time-dependent leptonic modelling, we show that this behaviour, in contradiction to single-zone scenarios, can instead be explained by a two-component model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Detailed experimental and computational information on the response of lithium surfaces to irradiation by slow hydrogenic particles (ions, atoms, molecules) is sparse and mainly speculative. In this work, we present a computational study of the reflection and retention of deuterium (D) atoms at crystalline and amorphous lithium surfaces at 300 and 500 K, where the D atoms have an impact energy in the range of 0.025–5 eV and incident angles of 0° (perpendicular incidence) or 85° (near-grazing incidence). Classical molecular dynamics simulations are performed with the reactive bond-order force field (ReaxFF) potentials. This study provides quantitative information on the deuterium sticking probability and recycling coefficient for lithium surfaces. Our results support the ongoing work at the Lithium Tokamak eXperiment-β fusion experiment as well as relevant experiments in the laboratory setting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report sputtering yields of Li+, H−, O−, and OHx− ion species from an Li–O–H surface for H, D, He, Ne, and Ar ion irradiation at 45° incidence in the energy range of 30–2000 eV. A Li film was deposited on a stainless steel target using Li evaporators in the LTX-β vessel, using the LTX-β Sample Exposure Probe (SEP), which includes an ultrahigh vacuum suitcase for transferring targets without significant contamination from air exposure. The SEP was used to transfer the Li-coated target from LTX-β to a separate Sample Exposure Station (SES) to perform ion exposure measurements. The SEP was also used for characterization of the Li-coated target utilizing X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy in a different chamber, showing that the lithium film surface was oxidized. Ion exposures were performed using an electron cyclotron resonance plasma source in the SES. Sputtered/ejected species were sampled by a quadrupole mass spectrometer with capabilities for detecting positive and negative ions, and an energy filter for determining the mean kinetic energy of the ejected ion species. All ion irradiations caused Li+ ions to be ejected, while causing impurity ions such as H+, H−, O− and OH− to be ejected. Measured ion energies of Li+ ions from a Li–O–H surface suggested that the typical sheath potential on the divertor surface can trap sputtered Li+ ions, which were previously reported as ~ 60% of total sputtered Li species from Li targets (Allain and Ruzic in Nucl Fusion 42:202, 2002). Hence, our results for the sputtering yields of ejected ion species and their associated ion energies from a Li–O–H surface indicates that lithium sputtering is suppressed and impurity removal is enhanced due to the sheath potential at the divertor surface for fusion reactor applications. The solar surface activity produces space weather. Solar flares, coronal mass ejections (CMEs), and coronal holes are examples of solar activity phenomena that can compress the magnetosphere and cause a geomagnetic storm. Previous studies have indicated that these solar events disturb the near-Earth region. This study examines the behavior of the terrestrial geomagnetic field (H-component) and focuses on how the geomagnetic index (SYM/H) responds to solar wind parameters related to solar activity. Results showed that on September 9, 2017, a powerful geomagnetic storm (SYM/H = 200 nT) was observed that was brought on by powerful solar flares, CMEs, and coronal holes that happened on September 7 and 8, 2017, which generated significant alterations in the magnetosphere's solar wind. On October 3 and 18, 2017, a moderate geomagnetic storm occurred, which resulted in a strong southbound situation with a high solar wind pressure that blasted high-density plasma due to CME associated with a coronal hole event into the magnetosphere. A moderate geomagnetic storm (SYM/H = 80 nT) on November 14, 2017, was triggered, according to findings, by a wider direction and high speed of CME with CIR event occurrence implies the accelerated large-scale solar wind that exacerbated the reconnection of the flowing interplanetary magnetic field into the inner magnetosphere. There were fewer injections of ions and energetic solar particles into the magnetosphere on December 12, 2017, which were thought to be a source of a weak geomagnetic storm(SYM/H = 49 nT). Additionally, the response of solar wind parameters and geomagnetic storm due to solar flare, CMEs and coronal holes to the modest drop in the ground geomagnetic field resulted in H-component reading at the RAN and DLT station. JEM-EUSO is an international program for the development of space-based Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray observatories. The program consists of a series of missions which are either under development or in the data analysis phase. All instruments are based on a wide-field-of-view telescope, which operates in the near-UV range, designed to detect the fluorescence light emitted by extensive air showers in the atmosphere. We describe the simulation software ESAF in the framework of the JEM-EUSO program and explain the physical assumptions used. We present here the implementation of the JEM-EUSO, POEMMA, K-EUSO, TUS, Mini-EUSO, EUSO-SPB1 and EUSO-TA configurations in ESAF. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation ground-based observatory for gamma-ray astronomy at very high energies. The Large-Sized Telescope prototype (LST-1) is located at the CTA-North site, on the Canary Island of La Palma. LSTs are designed to provide optimal performance in the lowest part of the energy range covered by CTA, down to ≃20 GeV. LST-1 started performing astronomical observations in 2019 November, during its commissioning phase, and it has been taking data ever since. We present the first LST-1 observations of the Crab Nebula, the standard candle of very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy, and use them, together with simulations, to assess the performance of the telescope. LST-1 has reached the expected performance during its commissioning period—only a minor adjustment of the preexisting simulations was needed to match the telescope's behavior. The energy threshold at trigger level is around 20 GeV, rising to ≃30 GeV after data analysis. Performance parameters depend strongly on energy, and on the strength of the gamma-ray selection cuts in the analysis: angular resolution ranges from 0.°12–0.°40, and energy resolution from 15%–50%. Flux sensitivity is around 1.1% of the Crab Nebula flux above 250 GeV for a 50 hr observation (12% for 30 minutes). The spectral energy distribution (in the 0.03–30 TeV range) and the light curve obtained for the Crab Nebula agree with previous measurements, considering statistical and systematic uncertainties. The influence of sugar consumption on the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) remains controversial. Prospective cohort studies focusing on total and specific types of sugar intake among the Asian population who have different patterns of sugar intake sources than American and European populations are scarce. We intended to examine the association of sugar intake with CRC risk among middle‐aged adults in a Japanese large‐scale population‐based cohort study. The participants (42,405 men and 48,600 women) who were 45–74 years old and answered the questionnaire in 1995–1999 in the Japan Public Health Center‐based Prospective Study were followed up until December 2013. Total sugars, total fructose, and specific types of sugar intake were estimated using a validated 147‐item food frequency questionnaire and divided into quintiles (Q1–Q5). We used Cox proportional hazard regression models adjusted for potential confounders to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). During the follow‐up, 2118 CRC cases (1226 men and 892 women) were identified. We did not observe any clear association between all types of sugar intake and an increased risk of CRC. Analyses by tumor sites yielded a positive association of total sugar consumption with rectal cancer in women (1.75 [1.07–2.87] for Q1 vs. Q5; plinear trend = 0.03), but no statistically significant trend was detected among men. Sugar intake was not associated with CRC risk in middle‐aged Japanese adults. Background: During the expansion of the pleural cavity in early fetuses, a thick sheet of loose mesenchymal tissue (SLMT) appears between the lung bud and body wall. Subsequently, the growing lung bud invades into the SLMT and the latter becomes fragmented to disappear. To compare this with the tympanic cavity filled with loose mesenchymal tissues, the present study aimed to demonstrate the development, establishment, and breaking of the SLMT in the retrosternal space. Materials and methods: Although the retrosternal tissue was almost absent or very thin at 7 weeks, the SLMT appeared behind the manubrium sterni at 8 weeks. Accordingly, at 9–10 weeks, cavitation occurred in the SLMT to expand the pleural cavity. Therefore, the volume of SLMT was not determined by the adjacent structures such as the pericardium and sternum. Likewise, mesenchymal tissues filling the middle ear disappeared after 26 weeks. Results: There were considerable individual variations in the timing of beginning and location of the tympanic cavitation. However, in contrast to the retrosternal SLMT, the volume of the future tympanic cavity is determined by the adjacent hard tissue and tympanic membrane much earlier than the cavitation. The mesenchymal tissue carried abundant vessels in the middle ear but none or few veins in the retrosternal SLMT. Conclusions: The concept that the lung bud invades into the splanchnic mesoderm to expand the pleural cavity seems oversimplified. Mechanical stresses from the pleural cavity might induce retrosternal cavitation, while a loss in blood supply might cause tympanic cavitation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Certain types of supernova remnants (SNRs) in our Galaxy are assumed to be PeVatrons, capable of accelerating cosmic rays (CRs) to ~ PeV energies. However, conclusive observational evidence for this has not yet been found. The SNR G106.3+2.7, detected at 1–100 TeV energies by different γ-ray facilities, is one of the most promising PeVatron candidates. This SNR has a cometary shape, which can be divided into a head and a tail region with different physical conditions. However, in which region the 100 TeV emission is produced has not yet been identified because of the limited position accuracy and/or angular resolution of existing observational data. Additionally, it remains unclear as to whether the origin of the γ-ray emission is leptonic or hadronic. Aims. With the better angular resolution provided by new MAGIC data compared to earlier γ-ray datasets, we aim to reveal the acceleration site of PeV particles and the emission mechanism by resolving the SNR G106.3+2.7 with 0.1° resolution at TeV energies. Methods. We observed the SNR G106.3+2.7 using the MAGIC telescopes for 121.7 h in total – after quality cuts – between May 2017 and August 2019. The analysis energy threshold is ~0.2 TeV, and the angular resolution is 0.07−0.1°. We examined the γ-ray spectra of different parts of the emission, whilst benefitting from the unprecedented statistics and angular resolution at these energies provided by our new data. We also used measurements at other wavelengths such as radio, X-rays, GeV γ-rays, and 10 TeV γ-rays to model the emission mechanism precisely. Results. We detect extended γ-ray emission spatially coincident with the radio continuum emission at the head and tail of SNR G106.3+2.7. The fact that we detect a significant γ-ray emission with energies above 6.0 TeV from only the tail region suggests that the emissions above 10 TeV detected with air shower experiments (Milagro, HAWC, Tibet ASγ and LHAASO) are emitted only from the SNR tail. Under this assumption, the multi-wavelength spectrum of the head region can be explained with either hadronic or leptonic models, while the leptonic model for the tail region is in contradiction with the emission above 10 TeV and X-rays. In contrast, the hadronic model could reproduce the observed spectrum at the tail by assuming a proton spectrum with a cutoff energy of ~1 PeV for that region. Such high-energy emission in this middle-aged SNR (4−10 kyr) can be explained by considering a scenario where protons escaping from the SNR in the past interact with surrounding dense gases at present. Conclusions. The γ-ray emission region detected with the MAGIC telescopes in the SNR G106.3+2.7 is extended and spatially coincident with the radio continuum morphology. The multi-wavelength spectrum of the emission from the tail region suggests proton acceleration up to ~PeV, while the emission mechanism of the head region could either be hadronic or leptonic. Although vital pulp therapy should be performed by promoting the wound-healing capacity of dental pulp, existing pulp-capping materials were not developed with a focus on the pulpal repair process. In previous investigations of wound healing in dental pulp, we found that organic dentin matrix components (DMCs) were degraded by matrix metalloproteinase-20, and DMC degradation products containing protein S100A7 (S100A7) and protein S100A8 (S100A8) promoted the pulpal wound-healing process. However, the direct use of recombinant proteins as pulp-capping materials may cause clinical problems or lead to high medical costs. Thus, we hypothesized that functional peptides derived from recombinant proteins could solve the problems associated with direct use of such proteins. In this study, we identified functional peptides derived from the protein S100 family and investigated their effects on dental pulp tissue. We first performed amino acid sequence alignments of protein S100 family members from several mammalian sources, then identified candidate peptides. Next, we used a peptide array method that involved human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) to evaluate the mineralization-inducing ability of each peptide. Our results supported the selection of 4 candidate functional peptides derived from proteins S100A8 and S100A9. Direct pulp-capping experiments in a rat model demonstrated that 1 S100A8-derived peptide induced greater tertiary dentin formation compared with the other peptides. To investigate the mechanism underlying this induction effect, we performed liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry analysis using hDPSCs and the S100A8-derived peptide; the results suggested that this peptide promotes tertiary dentin formation by inhibiting inflammatory responses. In addition, this peptide was located in a hairpin region on the surface of S100A8 and could function by direct interaction with other molecules. In summary, this study demonstrated that a S100A8-derived functional peptide promoted wound healing in dental pulp; our findings provide insights for the development of next-generation biological vital pulp therapies. This article discusses the effectiveness of endoscopic hand suturing (EHS) in preventing postoperative bleeding in patients undergoing gastric endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). Postoperative bleeding is a common complication of ESD, especially in patients taking antithrombotic agents (ATAs). The study found that EHS, which involves suturing the mucosal defect using a flexible needle holder and absorbable barbed suture, was successful in preventing bleeding in high-risk patients. The article discusses the validation of the PEACE scale, which assesses cleanliness during esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) to improve the quality of inspection during endoscopy. MAXI J1820+070 is a low-mass X-ray binary with a black hole (BH) as a compact object. This binary underwent an exceptionally bright X-ray outburst from 2018 March to October, showing evidence of a non-thermal particle population through its radio emission during this whole period. The combined results of 59.5 h of observations of the MAXI J1820+070 outburst with the H.E.S.S. MAGIC and VERITAS experiments at energies above 200 GeV are presented, together with Fermi -LAT data between 0.1 and 500 GeV, and multiwavelength observations from radio to X-rays. Gamma-ray emission is not detected from MAXI J1820+070, but the obtained upper limits and the multiwavelength data allow us to put meaningful constraints on the source properties under reasonable assumptions regarding the non-thermal particle population and the jet synchrotron spectrum. In particular, it is possible to show that, if a high-energy (HE) gamma-ray emitting region is present during the hard state of the source, its predicted flux should be at most a factor of 20 below the obtained Fermi -LAT upper limits, and closer to them for magnetic fields significantly below equipartition. During the state transitions, under the plausible assumption that electrons are accelerated up to ∼500 GeV, the multiwavelength data and the gamma-ray upper limits lead consistently to the conclusion that a potential HE and very-HE gamma-ray emitting region should be located at a distance from the BH ranging between 1011 and 1013 cm. The present study investigated the spatial variation of the physico-chemical characteristics of lateritic soil profiles (up to 60 cm in depth) in a sloping mango orchard (1 ha; slope gradient = 6 %) in North Peninsular Malaysia. The study revealed that horizontal variation for the exchangeable Al and Mg, and the particle size fractions in the topmost soil layer (0-15 cm) within the orchard was higher than their vertical variation within the soil profile, and that, in contrast, the opposite trend was found for the total N, cation exchange capacity, and base saturation. Furthermore, preferential accumulation of soil organic matter and nutrients such as total N and available P were found at the lower (LS) and/or middle (MS) slope positions than the upper (US) one, while the lower clay content with the higher clay activity index was observed at LS compared to MS and US. These results suggest that these variations occur by the scattered accumulation of fertilizer-derived nutrients (i.e. N, P, K, and Mg) in the surface soil layers and the translocation of the surface litter, soil and nutrients towards the downslope in addition to enhanced eluviation process with the residual of clays at the downslope in the sloping orchard. We present a computational investigation of the dependence of material erosion on the incident ion angle at rough graphite and silicon carbide divertor surfaces. Ion angle distributions (IADs) for D plasmas at NSTX-U and DIII-D divertors were calculated by an equation-of-motion model that traces the ion trajectories in the sheath. Then, the effective sputtering yields and ion shadowed area fractions were calculated by a Monte Carlo micro-patterning and roughness code that applied the calculated IADs to surface topographic data that were obtained from optical confocal microscopy of rough graphite and SiC divertor surfaces from NSTX-U and DIII-D experiments. The calculations found that the effective sputtering yields, the sputtering pattern, and the shadowed area are determined by the detailed surface topology rather than the root mean square roughness RRMS, which represents deviations from a flat surface. The suppression of the effective sputtering yields for rough surfaces compared to the yield for a smooth surface was accounted for by the change of the mean local incident ion angle (LIIA) ⟨θ′⟩. The mean surface inclination angle distribution (SIAD) ⟨δ⟩ was found to be a useful parameter to estimate the LIIA from the calculated IADs. We report global empirical formulas for the mean LIIA and fraction of the area shadowed from the main ions for D plasmas for rough surfaces with B-field incident angles α = 85°–89° as a function of the mean SIAD ⟨δ⟩. The decay of the primordial isotopes 238U, 235U, 232Th, and 40K has contributed to the terrestrial heat budget throughout the Earth's history. Hence, the individual abundance of those isotopes are key parameters in reconstructing contemporary Earth models. The geoneutrinos produced by the radioactive decays of uranium and thorium have been observed with the Kamioka Liquid‐Scintillator Antineutrino Detector (KamLAND). Those measurements have been improved with more than 18‐year observation time, and improvement in detector background levels mainly with an 8‐year nearly reactor‐free period, which now permit spectroscopy with geoneutrinos. Our results yield the first constraint on both uranium and thorium heat contributions. The KamLAND result is consistent with geochemical estimations based on elemental abundances of chondritic meteorites and mantle peridotites. The High‐Q model is disfavored at 99.76% C.L. and a fully radiogenic model is excluded at 5.2σ assuming a homogeneous heat producing element distribution in the mantle. Plain Language Summary: The energy to drive the Earth's engine comes from two different sources: primordial and radiogenic. Primordial energy comes from the added heat by collisions of accreting material and less so by the energy accompanying the sinking of metal to form the core. The radioactive decays of heat producing elements (i.e., potassium, thorium, and uranium) also generate energy and some of these decaying elements produce antineutrinos (geoneutrinos). Geoneutrino measurements provide the Earth's fuel gauge for its radiogenic power supply and insights into the planet's cooling history. The measurement accuracy of the KamLAND experiment has been improved by an 18‐year long‐term observation and a reduction of the significant background generated by commercial reactors. Consequently, modern geoneutrino measurements have entered an era of distinct spectroscopic contributions coming from uranium and thorium. The KamLAND result is consistent with compositional models for the bulk silicate Earth (the crust plus the mantle) predicting low to medium radiogenic heat (10–20 TW (1012 W)) and disfavor high concentration models (30 TW). This constraint sets the best limit on the permissible radiogenic energy budget in the Earth. Background: Evidence of the association between chronic low-grade inflammation, as reflected by C-reactive protein (CRP) measurements, and cancer risk is equivocal. Specifically, few studies have examined this in uncommon cancers and Asian populations.Methods: We utilised a case-cohort design consisting of multi-types of cancer (N = 3608), and a random subcohort (N = 4432) in a Japanese large population-based study, with a median follow-up time of 15.6 years, and measured baseline plasma CRP using high sensitivity assay. The hazard ratios (HRs) were estimated using weighted Cox proportional hazards methods.Results: The multivariable-adjusted HR (95% confidence interval) for the top quartile of CRP was 1.28 (1.11‒1.48) (Ptrend < 0.001) for overall cancer compared to the bottom quartile of CRP. Among site-specific cancers, higher CRP levels were associated with an increased risk of colorectal, lung, breast, biliary tract, and kidney cancer, and leukaemia. These positive associations remained among participants after >3 years' follow-up. Furthermore, subgroup analyses for overall cancer robustly showed a positive association with CRP levels, regardless of sex and obesity.Conclusion: Our consistent findings suggested that chronic low-grade inflammation measured by CRP is associated with the risk of cancer. The magnetic pre-sheath (MPS) length, L MPS, is a critical parameter to define the sheath potential, which controls the ion trajectory of low-Z species (D, T, He, and C), as well as the prompt re-deposition of high-Z species. To determine L MPS, we fabricated micro-trenches (30 Ă— 30 Ă— 4 μ m) via focused ion beam milling on a silicon surface and exposed them to L-mode deuterium plasmas in DIII-D via the divertor material evaluation system (DiMES) removable sample exposure probe. The areal distribution of impurity depositions, mainly consisting of carbon, was measured by energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) to reveal the deuterium ion shadowing effect on the trench floors. The carbon deposition profiles showed that the erosion was maximized for the azimuthal direction of φ = âˆ'40° (referenced to the toroidal magnetic field direction) as well as the polar angle of θ = 80°. A Monte Carlo equation-of-motion (EOM) model, based on a collisionless MPS, was used to calculate the azimuthal and polar deuterium ion angle distributions (IADs) at the surface for a range of L MPS = k Ă— ρ i, where ρ i is the ion gyro radius and k = 0.5â€"4. Then, gross erosion profiles were calculated by a Monte Carlo micro-patterning and roughness (MPR) code for ion sputtering using as input the calculated azimuthal and polar IADs for each value of k. Good agreement with the experimental C deposition profiles was obtained for the case k = 2.5â€"3.5. This result is consistent with a previous kinetic modeling prediction of k ∼ 3, as well as previous analytical investigations that predicted the L MPS to be several ion gyro radii. Background and Materials and Methods: To provide better understanding of frequent variations of the inferior oblique (IO) of adult extraocular muscles, we observed sagittal and horizontal histological sections of the eye and orbits from 32 foetuses (7-34 weeks of gestational age; 24-295 mm of crown-rump length).Results: In early foetuses (7-8 weeks), the IO was restricted at an antero-infero-medial angle of the future orbit. In contrast to extraocular recti, the IO appeared to extend along the mediolateral axis and had no definite tendon. At midterm, the IO tendon became evident. Sometimes, the IO muscle belly attached to the inferior rectus or, the IO tendon divided into two laminae to enclose the lateral rectus. At late-term, a multilayered sheath was evident around the sclera and, via one or some of the fascial layers, the IO was communicated with a fascia enclosing the inferior rectus. At midterm and late-term, the IO originated not only from the maxilla near the orbicularis oculi origin but also from a vein-rich fibrous tissue around the lacrimal sac. Both origins were muscular without intermittent tendon or ligament. Therefore, the fascial connection as well as a direct contact between the IO and the inferior or lateral rectus seemed to provide variant muscular bridges as reported in adults. Moreover, the two attachment sites at the origin seemed to provide double muscle bellies of the adult IO.Conclusions: Consequently, the present specimens contained seeds of any types of adult variations. We report on a search for electron antineutrinos ( ν ÂŻ e ) from astrophysical sources in the neutrino energy range 8.3â€"30.8 MeV with the KamLAND detector. In an exposure of 6.72 kton-year of the liquid scintillator, we observe 18 candidate events via the inverse beta decay reaction. Although there is a large background uncertainty from neutral current atmospheric neutrino interactions, we find no significant excess over background model predictions. Assuming several supernova relic neutrino spectra, we give upper flux limits of 60â€"110 cmâˆ'2 sâˆ'1 (90% confidence level, CL) in the analysis range and present a model-independent flux. We also set limits on the annihilation rates for light dark matter pairs to neutrino pairs. These data improve on the upper probability limit of 8B solar neutrinos converting into ν ÂŻ e , P ν e â†' ν ÂŻ e < 3.5 Ă— 10 âˆ' 5 (90% CL) assuming an undistorted ν ÂŻ e shape. We report the result of a search for neutrinos in coincidence with solar flares from the GOES flare database. The search was performed on a 10.8 kton-year exposure of KamLAND collected from 2002 to 2019. This large exposure allows us to explore previously unconstrained parameter space for solar flare neutrinos. We found no statistical excess of neutrinos and established 90% confidence level upper limits of 8.4 × 107 cm−2 (3.0 × 109 cm−2) on the electron antineutrino (electron neutrino) fluence at 20 MeV normalized to the X12 flare, assuming that the neutrino fluence is proportional to the X-ray intensity. Background: The purpose of this study was to compare the displacement of tooth arrangement in dentures fabricated by additive manufacturing (AM) and heat curing. Methods: Three‐dimensional (3D) scanning was performed for edentulous jaw models. After the teeth were arranged, 3D scanning for the wax denture was performed. Heat‐cured dentures were fabricated with heat‐cure polymer resin. Based on data obtained by subtracting the model data from wax denture data, AM dentures were fabricated from ultraviolet‐cured acrylic resin. Accuracy was verified by superimposing heat‐cured and AM dentures on the tooth region data from the wax dentures and measuring displacement of the tooth arrangement. Results: In the maxillary dentures, the amount of tooth displacement for the heat‐cured dentures and for the AM dentures ranged from −0.08 to +0.06 mm and from −0.25 to +0.06 mm respectively. A significant difference was observed between two dentures. In the mandibular dentures, the amount of tooth displacement for the heat‐cured dentures and for the AM dentures ranged from −0.09 to +0.07 mm and from −0.03 to +0.07 mm respectively. No significant difference was observed between two dentures. Summary: Humanized non‐obese diabetic/severe combined immunodeficiency/interleukin‐2 receptor‐γ‐null (NOD/SCID/IL2rγnull) [humanized (huNSG)] mice engrafted with human hematopoietic cells have been used for investigations of the human immune system. However, the epigenetic features of the human regulatory T (Treg) cells of huNSG mice have not been studied. The objective of this study was to clarify the characteristics of human Treg cells in huNSG mice, especially in terms of the epigenetic aspects. We compared the populations, inhibitory molecule expression and suppressive capacity of human Treg cells in spleens harvested from the huNSG mice 120 days after the engraftment of human umbilical cord blood CD34+ cells with human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Histone modifications and enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (Ezh2), an H3K27 methyltransferase, of human Treg cells were quantified in huNSG mice and human PBMCs. The effect of Ezh2 inhibitor on human Treg cells exposed to interleukin (IL)‐6 was also compared between them. Human Treg cells in the spleens of huNSG mice showed an increased proportion among CD4+ T cells, higher expressions of forkhead box protein 3 (FoxP3), cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen 4 (CTLA‐4) and glucocorticoid‐induced tumor necrosis factor‐related protein (GITR), a higher production of IL‐10 and enhanced suppressive capacity when compared with those in human PBMCs. H3K27me3 and Ezh2 were specifically up‐regulated in human Treg cells of huNSG mice in comparison with those of human PBMCs. The decrease in Treg cells induced by IL‐6 exposure was attenuated in huNSG mice when compared with human PBMCs, while the difference between them was cancelled by addition of Ezh2 inhibitor. With its drought tolerant and protein-rich properties, Bambara groundnut [Vigna subterranea (L.) Verdc.], an indigenous African legume crop can contribute immensely to food security. This miracle crop is used as food and for the enhancement of soil fertility in South Africa. Knowledge on the genetic diversity and structure among the Bambara groundnut landraces can pave the way for the effective use and cultivation of this crop in southern Africa, especially South Africa. The aim of this study was to assess the genetic diversity and structure among Bambara groundnut landraces collected across South Africa and compared to a limited number of accessions from southern Africa using SSR markers. Seventy-eight Bambara groundnut accessions were genotyped using 19 Bambara specific SSR markers. SSR loci explored in this study, were all polymorphic. A total of 127 alleles were detected with a mean of 6.7 alleles per locus. Allele diversity and frequency among genotypes varied from 0.21 to 0.85 with an average of 0.62 per locus. Genetic variation as described by the analysis of molecular variance indicated higher genetic diversity (92%) within landraces than between (8%) different landraces. Population structure analysis showed that three subpopulations existed, and most of the South African accessions were restricted to one subpopulation, indicating that Bambara landraces has the ability to form unique haplotypes in different environments. Cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] is a valuable crop for subsistence farmers in sub‐Saharan Africa. Characterization and evaluation of cowpea germplasm collections based on seed yield for genotype × environment (GE) interactions can assist in improving the adaptability and stability across environments. The objectives of this study were to determine genetic variability in the germplasm collection, to determine the magnitude of GE interactions, to identify superior genotypes across environments, and to determine the phenotypic correlations among the seed yield and related traits. Seventy‐five cowpea genotypes were planted in three different locations during the 2017–2018 and 2018–2019 cropping seasons, and data were collected for seed yield and its components. Highly significant (P <.001) genotype effect for seed yield traits suggested great genetic differences among the tested populations. Significant (P <.05) genotype × location interaction (GL), genotype × season interaction (GS), and genotype × location × season interaction (GLS) effects were observed for seed yield traits, indicating the presence of complex GE interactions. The GLS effect was more than the GL and GS effects for seed yield, 100‐seed weight, number of pods, and pod width, highlighting the difficulty in genetic improvement of these traits. Cowpea genotypes 6 (ARC006), 49 (ARC049), 63 (IT90K‐76), and 57 (PAN311) showed high yield, wide adaptation, and stability. Genotype 58 (NGOII) and 1 (ARC001) showed high yield, instability, and specific adaptation. No clear mega‐environments were identified. Significant (P <.05) correlations were observed among most of the traits evaluated. The results obtained can serve as a guide and basis of germplasm management and improvement of cowpea seed yield. Summary: Projected mortalities from cancer are expected to continue escalating, with conventional chemotherapeutic regimens having extensive side effects, hence the need for therapeutics capable of terminating cancer cells selectively, through apoptosis. Therapeutic protein isolates bind specifically to target proteins inducing cell death in vitro and in vivo in various cancer cells. Therefore, this study aimed at observing the antioxidant and anticancer potential of protein isolates from five cowpea cultivars (Glenda, Embu buff, Makhatini, Veg Cowpea 2 and Veg Cowpea 3). Cytotoxicity was conducted on cancerous and non‐cancerous cell lines. Apoptosis was quantified using flow cytometry, and caspase‐3/7 activity was determined. Cytotoxicity assays revealed that Embu buff was the pre‐eminent inhibitor of cancerous cells, while also acting as a protecting mediator in a stressed non‐cancerous cell line by causing a reversal in apoptotic activity. Summary: There has been growing interest in the use of resistant starch (RS) as a prebiotic for physiological benefits and to reduce the risk of chronic diseases. In this study, RS was isolated from samples of five cowpea cultivars (DT129‐4,TVU 11424,PAN 311, Fahari and Bechuana White) seeds to determine their potential prebiotic effects, and proximate and mineral composition. Results obtained showed samples of five cowpea cultivars to be high in protein (18.0–28.7%) and carbohydrates (54.9–66.0%) and low in fat (0.6–3.7%). The RS from cowpea samples ranged between 9.3 and 12.1% with cultivar DT129‐4 having the highest amount. Fermentation of RS using mixed and pure cultures was done, and bacterial growth was monitored over a 24‐h period. Resistant starch isolated from all cowpea samples fulfilled the criteria to be classified as a prebiotic which have a wide range of beneficial effects on the host, with cultivar DT129‐4 showing the most prebiotic potential amongst cowpea samples tested. Pd/Mg3.3Ni films were prepared by dc sputtering deposition on three different substrates of glass, diamondlike carbon/Si, and Si. Hydrogenation and dehydrogenation cycles were performed on these samples simultaneously. The optical switching property due to the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation was monitored by the transmission of laser light via the glass substrate. The switching ability was totally lost after 120 cycles. We made comparative study of the composition change between the new (as-deposited) and old (after 120 switching cycles) samples by Rutherford backscattering (RBS), elastic recoil detection analysis (ERDA), and nuclear reaction analysis (NRA). From the RBS results we found out the segregation of a Mg layer between the Pd cap layer and the rest of the Mg–Ni layer. At the Pd/Mg interface in the old sample, thin MgO layer formed probably during the dehydrogenation process with O2. ERDA showed that there is much hydrogen in the old sample. NRA displayed the depth profiles of hydrogen distribution in the old sample. It is revealed that much hydrogen is accumulated at the interface between the Pd cap layer and the segregated Mg layer. It can be concluded that the formations of oxide and hydride of the segregated Mg layer are the main reasons for the degradation of the Mg3.3Ni switchable mirror. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This study investigated whether the presence of tooth wear in young adults can help to discriminate patients with sleep bruxism (SB) from control subjects. Materials and Methods: The tooth wear clinical scores and frequency of sleep masseter electromyographic activity of 130 subjects (26.6 +/- 0.5 years) were compared in this case-control study. Tooth wear scores (collected during clinical examination) for the incisors, canines, and molars were pooled or analyzed separately for statistics. Sleep bruxers (SBrs) were divided into two subgroups according to moderate to high (M-H-SBr; n = 59) and low (L-SBr; n = 48) frequency of masseter muscle contractions. Control subjects (n = 23) had no history of tooth grinding. The sensitivity and specificity of tooth wear versus SB diagnosis, as well as positive and negative predictive values (PPV and NPV), were calculated. One-way analysis of variance and the Mann-Whitey U test were used to compare groups. Results: Both SBr subgroups showed significantly higher tooth wear scores than the control group for both pooled and separated scores (P < .001). No difference was observed between M-H-SBr and L-SBr frequency groups (P = .14). The pooled sum of tooth wear scores discriminates SBrs from controls (sensitivity = 94%, specificity = 87%). The tooth wear PPV for SB detection was modest (26% to 71%) but the NPV to exclude controls was high (94% to 99%). Conclusions: Although the presence of tooth wear discriminates SBrs with a current history of tooth grinding from nonbruxers in young adults, its diagnostic value is modest. Moreover, tooth wear does not help to discriminate the severity of SB. Caution is therefore mandatory for clinicians using tooth wear as an outcome for SB diagnosis. The photorefractive properties of the iron-doped Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PZN-PT) relaxor ferroelectric single crystals were investigated by two-beam coupling experiments. The Fe:0.01 wt %- and the Fe:0.1 wt %-doped 0.91PZN-0.09PT single crystals were grown with the flux solution method. The Extinction spectrum, the electro-opric coefficient, the light-induced absorption change, and the photoconductivity were measured in these samples. Ammonia molecules formed in a nitrogen-seeded D-fueled plasma are shown to catalyze volumetric recombination of hydrogen ions. This Hydronitrogen Molecular Assisted Recombination (HN-MAR) process occurs by charge and ion exchange reactions with ammonia (ND3), leading to subsequent volumetric recombination with ND3+ and ND4+ molecular ions. When the plasma density is raised to the point where volumetric recombination dominates plasma losses to the wall [ne > 1018 m−3], a calibrated electrostatic quadrupole plasma analyzer shows that the ND4+ ammonium ion density fraction drops from 0.55 to 0.11. We show that this is consistent with a 0-d kinetics model that includes the HN-MAR process with rates that are proportional to the electron density. The results suggest that direct injection of ammonia would provide a more efficient pathway to achieve divertor detachment in future tokamak experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Introduction: The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of improving the attitude of dental students towards the use of a full‐body patient simulation system (SIMROID) compared to the traditional mannequin (CLINSIM) for dental clinical education. Materials and methods: The participants were 10 male undergraduate dental students who had finished clinical training in the university hospital 1 year before this study started. They performed a crown preparation on an upper pre‐molar tooth using SIMROID and CLINSIM as the practical clinical trials. The elapsed time for preparation was recorded. The taper of the abutment teeth was measured using a 3‐dimensional shape‐measuring device after this trial. In addition, a self‐reported questionnaire was collected that included physical pain, treatment safety and maintaining a clean area for each simulator. Qualitative data analysis of a free format report about SIMROID was performed using text mining analysis. This trial was performed twice at 1‐month intervals. Results: The students considered physical pain, treatment safety and a clean area for SIMROID significantly better than that for CLINSIM (P < .01). The elapsed time of preparation in the second practical clinical trial was significantly lower than in the first for SIMROID and CLINSIM (P < .01).
