Background: There is a gap between the principles of person-centred dementia care and their actual implementation. However, scoping reviews of the barriers and facilitators to implementing person-centred dementia care in long-term care facilities for Western countries and Asian countries are lacking. Objective: To identify and compare the barriers and facilitators to implementing person-centred dementia care in long-term care facilities between Western and Asian countries. Methods: In line with Arksey and O'Malley's methodology, a scoping review was conducted and is reported following PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Nine English language databases and three Chinese databases were searched to identify qualitative and quantitative research studies published in English and Chinese. Thematic analysis was used to summarise and characterize the barriers and facilitators to implementing person-centred dementia care in long-term care facilities for Western and Asian countries. Results: Thirty-three studies were included. Over half were conducted in Western countries (n =20). Barriers and facilitators were grouped under four high level themes: Nursing and care staff factors, people living with dementia and family factors, organizational factors, and resource factors. Inadequate knowledge of person-centred care, staffing shortages, time constraints, and low wages were the principal barriers to implementing person-centred dementia care in both Western and Asian countries. Conclusions: The findings indicate that staff encounter numerous obstacles and needs in implementing person-centred care for people living with dementia in long-term care settings. Educational levels of nursing staff in Western countries were generally higher compared to Asian countries. Additionally, work-related injuries and stigma associated with dementia care presented unique challenges for nursing staff in Asia and were not cited in Western studies. Conversely, family-related factors were more frequently and elaborately cited as influencing person-centred dementia care in Western long-term care facilities. This article argues for the inclusion of more East Asia-focused content, particularly regarding China and North Korea, in homeland security and emergency preparedness (HSEP) undergraduate curricula. It contends that current programs overemphasize the post-9/11 counterterrorism paradigm while neglecting state-level threats, especially from China as an ascendant geopolitical rival. China poses multifaceted challenges through cyberattacks, intellectual property theft, economic coercion, and potential military contingencies, such as invading Taiwan. North Korea's nuclear program and cyber activities also jeopardize U.S. homeland security. To prepare future professionals, the article recommends adding a "state actor threats" core subject matter area covering the histories, cultures, and political dynamics underlying these nations' antagonistic policies. Cultivating deeper cultural competency about U.S. strategic competitors in East Asia is crucial for bolstering national security. High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) is a representative biomarker of systemic inflammation and is associated with numerous chronic diseases. To explore the biological pathways and functions underlying chronic inflammation, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) and several post-GWAS analyses of the hsCRP levels. This study was performed on data from 71,019 Koreans and is one of the largest East Asian studies. Overall, 69 independent single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified, including 13 novel variants. The implicated genes and pathways are primarily involved in cholesterol metabolism and the immune response. A phenome-wide association study was performed based on a polygenic risk score (PRS) constructed using 69 hsCRP-associated SNPs. Notably, the alleles associated with higher hsCRP levels appeared to be associated with lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (P = 1.69 × 10–33, β = -1.47) and higher γ -glutamyl transpeptidase (P = 8.30 × 10–8, β = 0.84). It suggests that increase in genetically determined hsCRP may contribute to a decrease in cholesterol level and a strong oxidative environment in the blood vessel. Thus, individuals with higher hsCRP-PRS may have a greater risk of cardiovascular diseases. Our findings suggest the genetic association between cholesterol and hsCRP, as well as the clinical importance of hsCRP-PRS for predicting the potential risk of cardiovascular diseases. On February 1931, Russian linguist Sergei Malov sent a complaint to the Union of Education Workers' Disputes Commission regarding one of his colleagues, Alexander Samoilovich, who was one of the leading Soviet scholars of the time. According to Malov, Samoilovich had used his position and influence to obstruct Malov's appointment to a professorship for the sole purpose of revenge. Malov demanded an official apology from Samoilovich, certified by the union, for his actions. Scholars who study the history of Oriental Studies in Russia usually focus on the evolution of ideas and approaches within the field, or on the relationship within the profession between knowledge and power. But they have not paid sufficient attention to the self‐regulatory mechanisms that operated within the Soviet Orientologist community. This article argues that during the 1920s and 1930s, a period of great social and political uncertainty, Soviet scholars used "ethics" for specific goals, one of which was to try to limit the scale of intervention by state and party officials in academic life and thereby shelter their community from the unpredictable effects such intervention might have. Malov and Smoilovich, however, attached different meanings to this notion, which consequently played a major role in the collision between the two scholars who previously had been allies. This study explores and understands transnational activism in Asia, specifically focusing on the crucial role played by individuals, particularly Thai youth activist Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal, in shaping and constructing transnational networks and relations. The study argues that the networks individuals establish with other transnational actors serve as the primary source of inspiration for other individuals to engage in transnational activism. These networks are rooted in everyday life interactions in the era of globalisation, with activism reflecting this embeddedness and interconnectedness. The case study of Netiwit demonstrates how connections between Thai activists and activists in Hong Kong and Taiwan stem from the increased mobility of individuals in the globalised world, facilitating physical interactions. Introduction: To investigate the association between cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CMM) patterns and dementia‐related neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPSs) among multiregional and ethnic seniors. Methods: Four Asian studies (discovery) and UK Biobank (validation) were included. CMM was defined as two or more of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus, stroke, and heart disease. The latent class analysis identified CMM patterns. Two‐step individual participant data (IPD) and Cox regressions explored associations between CMM and the presence and short‐term (1–2 years) incidence of four neuropsychiatric subsyndromes: psychosis, hyperactivity, affective, and apathy. Results: A total of 2950 Asian and 40,424 UK participants were included. Metabolic multimorbidity (≥2 of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes mellitus) was associated with the presence (odds ratio [OR] = 1.34, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.00–1.81; and 1.93, 1.73–2.16; in the respective data set), and incidence (hazard ratio [HR] = 3.91, 1.53–10.01; and 6.94, 2.52–19.07) of affective subsyndrome. Cardio‐cerebrovascular multimorbidity (≥2 of hypertension, stroke, and heart disease) was not associated with any NPSs. Discussion: Metabolic multimorbidity may exacerbate the neuropsychiatric disturbances of possible dementia. This article examines the history, current state and prospects of Oriental and African Studies (OAS) in modern Russia. It explains why there are several educational models of OAS at bachelor's and master's degree in Russia and describes the current situation where 22 Russian universities offering OAS programmes produce graduates with mostly only two majors, i.e., historians and philologists. The article addresses the position of OAS among modern Russian scientific disciplines. Another aim is to trace the historical logic of the development of Oriental Studies and related African Studies in Russia, placing the discourse in the context of the Eastern Question, or the political fate of the Ottoman Empire. Through researching the provenance of a Buddhist manuscript written in the Pali and Thai languages currently held at Rollins, this article seeks to answer the question of how a religious document created in Thailand ended up in a liberal arts college library in America. Regarded as an act of devotion by many Buddhist followers in Southeast Asia, the use of folding manuscripts (samut khoi) has been observed for centuries. The folding manuscripts served as handbooks and chanting manuals for Buddhist monks, who often recited in religious ceremonies while paying tributes to the deceased, with the hope of reincarnation in a heavenly realm. Acquired by Henry Harkness while serving in the British colonial forces in Asia in the early nineteenth century and later donated by Howard Kelly in 1932 to support Professor Edwin Grover's course, The History of Books, at Rollins College, the large leporello manuscript contains five Pali texts in Khom script and one Thai text in Khom Thai script. Both scripts are variations of ancient Khmer script and have been extensively used in Thailand. The long journey of this samut khoi from Thailand to America not only shows the growth of Buddhism and the popular religious practice in Southeast Asia, but also reflects the colonial history in Asia and the rise of "Oriental Studies" in the West. By focusing on the background of the Pali- and Thai-language manuscript and through careful examinations of both Henry Harkness and Howard Kelly's lives, this article also sheds light on the practice of manuscript collection in the Western tradition and the act of philanthropy in America. Scopus is a corporate-owned database of selected journals which is considered high-quality/top-caliber by many university administrators and professors. It is owned by the Netherlands-based company Elsevier, and among the typical bases of metrics used in global university rankings. As a result, Scopus-centrism persists in the policies of Philippine universities and Philippine educational and/or research agencies. In view of this, this paper is aimed at fulfilling the following objectives: (1) present a critical introduction on Scopus and similar systems of abstract and citation databases; (2) describe the dominance of Scopus-centrism among public agencies and universities in the Philippines; (3) present a critique of Scopus-centrism in the Philippines; and (4) discuss some alternatives to Scopus-centrism. The article deals with the scientific biography and achievements of Olena Dmytrivna Ohnieva, a leading researcher of Tibetan civilisation in Ukraine. Ohnieva continued the scientific work of her famous teachers B. I. Kuznetsov, B. I. Pankratov, and G. M. Bongard-Levin, the representatives of the Soviet Tibetan school of Leningrad and Moscow in the second half of the 20th century. She conducted research in the field of textual studies and art history, proving the need for a comprehensive study of the iconographic and iconometric foundations of religious painting in Tibet on the basis of classical texts. Ohnieva has developed her own style of studying and reading the subjects of Tibetan thangka paintings that contain many symbols, knowledge and information about the painting tradition, Buddhism, history and ethnicity of Tibet. Armed with this knowledge and methods, she was able to research and provide detailed descriptions of numerous works of fine art from Central Asia, not only of Tibetan origin, but also the art of regions that were influenced by Tibet through the spread of Buddhism. She researched the biographies of famous religious figures of medieval Tibet who laid the foundations of traditional painting theory. During different periods of her life, she also acted as a translator and researcher of Tibetan religious texts, and proved herself to be a populariser of Tibetan culture. For more than a quarter of a century Ohnieva had been working on search and description of original Tibetan materials in Ukrainian museums. Thus she made an invaluable contribution to the development of oriental studies in Ukraine. Her studies of museum collections became basis for organising exhibitions that had granted many people the opportunity to get acquainted with the tradition of Tibetan Buddhism and the culture of the peoples of Asia. This essay examines the relationship between war and European Qur'anic studies from the mediaeval period to the nineteenth century. It surveys manuscript sources that bear traces of wartime looting and the work of Muslim captives and converts. It argues that war played a recurring role in European oriental studies, helping to shape its practices, aims, and geography. In their early stages, war contributed to a broader shift in academic oriental studies toward the study of the Qur'an in its multilingual Islamic intellectual contexts. Later, as colonial expansion facilitated access to new sources, illicitly acquired manuscripts, especially early Qur'an fragments, were instrumental for historical scholarship on the Qur'an. Background and Aim: Healing rates of severe erosive esophagitis (EE; Los Angeles [LA] Grade C/D) in patients treated with a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) is suboptimal (~60–70%). Vonoprazan, a potassium‐competitive acid blocker, is suggested to have better healing rates in patients with severe EE. This meta‐analysis compares the efficacy and safety of vonoprazan 20 mg versus lansoprazole 30 mg daily in healing EE, specifically in those with LA Grade C/D. Methods: We searched MEDLINE, Embase, and CENTRAL on May 24, 2023. Studies that randomized EE patients to vonoprazan 20 mg daily or lansoprazole 30 mg daily and compared healing rates were included. The risk of bias was assessed using Cochrane's Risk of Bias 2 tool. The fixed‐effect model was used to obtain the pooled efficacy and safety outcomes. Subgroup analysis was done to compare healing rates in mild (LA Grade A/B) versus severe EE and based on study location. Results: Four randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with low risks of bias comprising 2208 participants were included. Vonoprazan 20 mg was superior to lansoprazole 30 mg daily in healing severe EE at all weeks (Week 2 RR 1.294 [95% CI 1.169–1.433], Week 4 1.160 [1.059–1.270], and Week 8 1.175 [95% CI 1.107–1.247]), but was similar for mild EE at all weeks (P‐interaction < 0.01). Vonoprazan 20 mg was more efficacious than lansoprazole 30 mg at Week 8 in Western versus Asian studies (P‐interaction < 0.01). Any, serious, and drug‐related treatment‐emergent adverse events were comparable between groups. Conclusion: Vonoprazan 20 mg is superior to lansoprazole 30 mg for healing severe EE but not mild EE. This special issue brings together a diverse set of cases from Asia with the aim of decentring established historical narratives about science diplomacy. With a critical perspective bringing together the bodies of literature in the fields of the History of Science, Technology and Medicine (STM) and critical Asian Studies, we argue that these cases foreground a geopolitical history with multiple forms of sovereignty – often contested ones – and a range of political institutions and actors that enables us to revisit science diplomacy as a means for understanding the relationship between science and international affairs. In doing so, the articles in this issue consciously eschew the normative 'centring' of superpowers or Western imperial powers as the primary actors, focusing instead on the agency and subjectivity of actors within Asia, many of whom were prominent in their respective local contexts. Additionally, we argue that the cases presented here, which examine issues from across science, technology, medicine and the environment, collectively demonstrate the further need for the 'science' in 'science diplomacy' to be interpreted more broadly, incorporating as it does many aspects of human engagement with the material world. Background Although endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is established as first-choice treatment for early esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) worldwide, most data are derived from Asian studies. We aimed to evaluate the long-term outcomes of ESD for patients with early ESCC in a Western cohort. Methods In this retrospective cohort study, patients with early ESCC amenable to ESD were included from four tertiary referral hospitals in the Netherlands between 2012 and 2017. All ESD procedures were performed by experienced endoscopists, after which the decision for additional treatment was made on a per-patient basis. Outcomes were curative resection rate, ESCC-specific survival, and overall survival. Results Of 68 included patients (mean age 69 years; 34 males), ESD was technically successful in 66 (97%; 95%CI 93%–100%), with curative resection achieved in 34/66 (52%; 95%CI 39%–64%). Among patients with noncurative resection, 15/32 (47%) underwent additional treatment, mainly esophagectomy (n = 10) or definitive chemoradiation therapy (n = 4). Endoscopic surveillance was preferred in 17/32 patients (53%), based on severe comorbidities or patient choice. Overall, 31/66 patients (47%) died during a median follow-up of 66 months; 8/31 (26%) were ESCC-related deaths. The 5-year overall and ESCC-specific survival probabilities were 62% (95%CI 52%–75%) and 86% (95%CI 77%–96%), respectively. Conclusion In this Western cohort with long-term follow-up, the effectiveness and safety of ESD for early ESCC was confirmed, although the rate of noncurative resections was substantial. In 1985, Rick Asher and G.S. Gai, jointly edited a volume published by the American Institute for Indian Studies that was titled Indian Epigraphy. Its Bearing on the History of Art. The volume carried 50 papers, short, succinct, but truly important for art historians – the result of a conference held at Varanasi in 1979. My review for the Journal of Asian Studies ended with the comment that this was a book that would find itself on the shelf of any library interested in South Asia. Background: It is known that many surgeons encounter intraoperative adverse events which can result in Second Victim Syndrome (SVS), with significant detriment to their emotional and physical health. There is, however, a paucity of Asian studies in this space. The present study thus aimed to explore the degree to which the experience of an adverse event is common among surgeons in Singapore, as well as its impact, and factors affecting their responses and perceived support systems. Methods: A self-administered survey was sent to surgeons at four large tertiary hospitals. The 42-item questionnaire used a systematic closed and open approach, to assess: Personal experience with intraoperative adverse events, emotional, psychological and physical impact of these events and perceived support systems. Results: The response rate was 57.5% (n = 196). Most respondents were male (54.8%), between 35 and 44 years old, and holding the senior consultant position. In the past 12 months alone, 68.9% recalled an adverse event. The emotional impact was significant, including sadness (63.1%), guilt (53.1%) and anxiety (45.4%). Speaking to colleagues was the most helpful support source (66.7%) and almost all surgeons did not receive counselling (93.3%), with the majority deeming it unnecessary (72.2%). Notably, 68.1% of the surgeons had positive takeaways, gaining new insight and improving vigilance towards errors. Both gender and surgeon experience did not affect the likelihood of errors and emotional impact, but more experienced surgeons were less likely to have positive takeaways (p = 0.035). Individuals may become advocates for patient safety, while simultaneously championing the cause of psychological support for others. Conclusions: Intraoperative adverse events are prevalent and its emotional impact is significant, regardless of the surgeon's experience or gender. While colleagues and peer discussions are a pillar of support, healthcare institutions should do more to address the impact and ensuing consequences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This action research aimed to unlock the readiness and interests of students in learning Asian Studies subject through the use of the Pre-Learning Activities and Necessary Strategies or PLANS intervention program. Pre-learning activities were assigned for the students to accomplish every before the discussion proper of a topic. Survey was conducted using 4-point Likert Scale and structured questions. A total weighted mean of 3.02 was garnered indicating a high level of behavioral engagement from students after the implementation. The study employed a dual method approach, incorporating qualitative data. The qualitative findings revealed proficiency in learning the subject and readiness and confidence to engage in the class discussion. Themes emerged regarding the intervention's improvement include the employment interactive group-based activities and conduct of the pre-learning activities in a face-to-face learning modality. Summing up the results from both quantitative and qualitative date have manifested a significant positive impact in unlocking the readiness of students in learning Asian Studies. In interwar Poland, academic Oriental studies developed in three distinct centres, although the Orientalist community remained decentralized. In Vilnius, several scholars in this field were active and conducted both research and instruction of Oriental languages. Among them were Poles, Jews, Karaites and Tatars. Professionally, they were also diverse, including linguists, biblical scholars, Palestinologists, museologists, lecturers, and rabbis. Their academic pursuits encompassed religious studies, Semitic studies (with a focus on Hebrew), Ancient Eastern philology, Sanskrit, Ottoman Turkish studies, Turkish dialectology, Karaim studies, and ethnographic studies of the Polish Orient. In terms of education, they were involved in both school and university instruction, teaching Hebrew, Arabic, Turkish, and Karaim. Noteworthy figures among these scholars in Vilnius included: Antoni Cichoński, Zofia Dubińska, Aleksander Dubiński, Dawid Neiger, Paweł Nowicki, Jan Otrębski, Seraja Szapszał, Jakub Szynkiewicz, Franciszek Tyczkowski, Bolesław Wilanowski, Ali Ismaił Woronowicz, Ananiasz Zajączkowski, and Włodzimierz Zajączkowski, along with Władysław Zimnicki. However, the research on Jewish, Tatar (Quranic) and Karaim education in Vilnius remains scant. Beyond scholarly and pedagogical pursuits, Orientalist activities in Vilnius extended to numerous institutions, including the Jewish Library, the Karaim and Tatar Museum, and various associations (including the Polish Oriental Society). Moreover, the city served as a hub for many periodicals, such as "Myśl Karaimska," "Rocznik Tatarski," "Życie Tatarskie," as well as many Jewish magazines. Elizabeth Moore, an esteemed professor in the Department of the History of Art and Archaeology at SOAS University of London, has sadly passed away. She was widely recognized for her expertise in Southeast Asian art and archaeology and had been a valued member of the editorial board of Indonesia and the Malay World for over three decades. Moore's research primarily focused on Southeast Asia, with a particular emphasis on Myanmar, Thailand, and Cambodia. Her extensive knowledge encompassed both mainland and maritime regions of the area. Through her publications and teaching, Moore made significant contributions to the field, and she generously donated around 150 objects to SOAS, which are now part of the Teaching and Handling Collection. The text serves as an obituary for Elizabeth Howard Moore, a highly respected scholar and educator in the field of Southeast Asian art and archaeology. "Shomotsu, insatsu, hon'ya: Nitchūkan o meguru hon no bunkashi" is a comprehensive volume of essays that explores the historical study of commercial publishing in pre-1900 East Asia, with a focus on Japan. Objectives: Multiple lung cancer screening studies reported the performance of Lung CT Screening Reporting and Data System (Lung-RADS), but none systematically evaluated its performance across different populations. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the performance of Lung-RADS (versions 1.0 and 1.1) for detecting lung cancer in different populations. Methods: We performed literature searches in PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Embase databases on October 21, 2022, for studies that evaluated the accuracy of Lung-RADS in lung cancer screening. A bivariate random-effects model was used to estimate pooled sensitivity and specificity, and heterogeneity was explored in stratified and meta-regression analyses. Results: A total of 31 studies with 104,224 participants were included. For version 1.0 (27 studies, 95,413 individuals), pooled sensitivity was 0.96 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.90–0.99) and pooled specificity was 0.90 (95% CI: 0.87–0.92). Studies in high-risk populations showed higher sensitivity (0.98 [95% CI: 0.92–0.99] vs. 0.84 [95% CI: 0.50–0.96]) and lower specificity (0.87 [95% CI: 0.85–0.88] vs. 0.95 (95% CI: 0.92–0.97]) than studies in general populations. Non-Asian studies tended toward higher sensitivity (0.97 [95% CI: 0.91–0.99] vs. 0.91 [95% CI: 0.67–0.98]) and lower specificity (0.88 [95% CI: 0.85–0.90] vs. 0.93 [95% CI: 0.88–0.96]) than Asian studies. For version 1.1 (4 studies, 8811 individuals), pooled sensitivity was 0.91 (95% CI: 0.83–0.96) and specificity was 0.81 (95% CI: 0.67–0.90). Conclusion: Among studies using Lung-RADS version 1.0, considerable heterogeneity in sensitivity and specificity was noted, explained by population type (high risk vs. general), population area (Asia vs. non-Asia), and cancer prevalence. Clinical relevance statement: Meta-regression of lung cancer screening studies using Lung-RADS version 1.0 showed considerable heterogeneity in sensitivity and specificity, explained by the different target populations, including high-risk versus general populations, Asian versus non-Asian populations, and populations with different lung cancer prevalence. The field of South Asian studies, despite selective growth in the past couple of decades, urgently needs to double in size. Otherwise, it will be unable to meet an array of challenges—some long familiar to area studies, some new to the twenty-first-century world. If it cannot function as a field for the production of new knowledge, the humanities and social sciences will remain trapped by the theories and historical experience of other areas, above all Europe. The present series of contributions critically edits in Romanian and English, with concordances and commentary, a hefty string of unpublished, multilingual manuscripts written by the young Mircea Eliade, Indologist and historian of religions in South Asia, from 1929 to 1931. Previously unknown, the manuscripts were purchased by a private collector, who most graciously contacted the editors in February 2023 and bequeathed them for the present publication. Few studies have focused on reclassifying follicular adenomas (FAs) as noninvasive follicular thyroid neoplasms with papillary-like nuclear features (NIFTPs), but none have been conducted in America or Europe. The aims of this study were to analyze the prevalence of NIFTP reclassified from follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinomas (FVPTCs) and FAs before NIFTP was defined in the literature, the rate of NIFTP among PTC (papillary thyroid carcinomas) established in real time between 2017 and 2022, and demographic, ultrasonographic, and cytologic characteristics of NIFTPs compared with FVPTCs and FAs. This was a retrospective cohort study of tumors diagnosed as PTCs (n = 247) and FAs (n = 144) at a Brazilian hospital. Overall, 13.4% of PTCs and 7% of FAs were reclassified as NIFTPs. The rate of real-time diagnosed NIFTPs among PTC was 12.3%. The median tumor size was larger among NIFTPs (3.0 cm) than FVPTCs (1.1 cm; P < 0.01). A high-risk ultrasonographic pattern was rare in NIFTPs (5.6%). The cytologic classifications differed between FVPTCs and NIFTPs (P < 0.01), and the most frequent category among NIFTPs was 'follicular neoplasm' (52.6%). The category 'suspicious for malignancy' was frequent in FVPTCs and rare (5.3%) in NIFTPs. In conclusion, FVPTCs and FAs may be reclassified as NIFTPs. The prevalence of NIFTPs reclassified from FAs was lower in our cohort than in Asian studies. The rate of NIFTPs reclassified from PTC was similar to that of NIFTPs diagnosed in real time and was aligned with rates reported in studies from America and Europe.
