The sublime is shown to be a red herring in scholarship as it fails to account for many of the valuable experiences available to nature sports enthusiasts. The article draws on the work of Genevieve Lloyd to propose that wonder is a more suitable concept that gets to the heart not only of the terror and awe that nature can inspire, but also to the orientation towards our finitude, difference, and the stimulation of growth and practical knowledge that nature sports also inspire (and that are not accounted for in the sublime). Gingival recession treatment is one of the major clinical challenges in periodontics, and various surgical techniques have been proposed to correct it. Most of these techniques are suitable for isolated recession sites and involve harvesting an autogenous tissue graft, which increases patient morbidity and might result in inferior esthetics due to incision design. This study assessed the benefit of adding platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) to the vestibular incision subperiosteal tunneling approach (VISTA) in treating multiple gingival recession compared to using VISTA alone. A total of 41 teeth with Miller Class I and II defects were randomized in a split-mouth design. Multiple clinical parameters were tested, including the change in gingival thickness over time, keratinized tissue width, and gingival phenotype (using the transparency of a periodontal probe). Patient-centered outcomes were also assessed via visual analog scale. Multiple Miller Class I and II recessions in the maxilla can be effectively treated with VISTA. However, when used in conjunction with PRF, no significant differences were detected in any parameter. Slow motion is a popular video editing tool used to enhance short-form videos (e.g., reels, stories, GIFs), which are commonly found in media entertainment and marketing communications. This research shows that slow motion increases the virality (e.g., likes, votes, views) of short-form videos and boosts brand liking, choice, and willingness to pay. The effect occurs because slow motion enhances the hedonic component of the viewing experience via processing fluency. By documenting how the success of slow motion is subject to moderators, this work shows marketers, entertainment producers, and everyday people how to use slow motion more effectively. Across a large-scale field data set and six experiments, the authors highlight that slow motion is especially effective when applied to short-form videos that are inherently pleasant and that involve complex movements that are difficult to perceive at regular speed. However, even simple movements benefit from slow motion when content creators zoom in on subtle movements to increase complexity. Moreover, slow motion is more effective when viewers engage in less elaborate processing. This clinical case outlines a comprehensive digital workflow for a minimally invasive multidisciplinary treatment. The process utilizes one open-source software for digital wax-up and one low-cost software to address esthetic concerns related to teeth misalignment. The patient's function was stabilized with a digitally made occlusal splint. The application of the described digital workflow technique, incorporating open-source, lowcost, and closed software, played a pivotal role in attaining a straightforward and predictable outcome with minimally invasive treatment. Purpose: To evaluate bone preservation and esthetic recovery between the socket-shield technique (SST) with different labial bone plate thicknesses and the conventional immediate implant technique (CIIT). Materials and Methods: Patients who underwent immediate implant placement in the anterior region were divided into three groups: the SST with a thickwall phenotype (> 1 mm; SSTA group), the SST with a thin-wall phenotype (< 1 mm; SSTB group), and the CIIT with a thickwall phenotype (> 1 mm; CIIT group). Radiologic images and clinical photos were collected before surgery, immediately postoperatively, and 6 months postoperatively. The labial bone width, labial bone width change (BWC), labial bone volume change (BVC), pink esthetic score (PES), and complication rate were evaluated among the three groups. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software. Results: A total of 60 patients (n = 20/group) were enrolled in this 6-month retrospective study. The BWC in the SSTA group (0.22 to 0.30 mm) and the SSTB group (0.18 to 0.33 mm) was less than that in the CIIT group (0.61 to 0.80 mm; P < .004). The SSTA group and the SSTB group had a lower BVC (24.08 vs 21.14 vs 54.81, respectively; P = .004) and greater PES (11.75 vs 11.65 vs 10.65, respectively; P = .009) than the CIIT group. No complications occurred among these patients. Conclusions: With the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that the SST is a reliable method for preserving bone and achieving satisfactory esthetic outcomes. In response to recent calls for promoting the contextual intelligence of sport psychology practitioners, the aim of the current study was to obtain the first-person competitive experiences of kendo fighters (i.e., kenshi). Existential phenomenological interviews were conducted with eight competitive Japanese-American kenshi residing in the United States. The findings of thematic analysis indicated that the participants possessed a strong commitment to earning ippon (i.e., a valid point), which was achieved by a subjective synchronization of mind, sword, and body in the execution of a strike against an opponent. They considered this to be a transformative experience, which elevated them perceptually out of the sporting context to a momentary sense of "cutting" the opponent with a real sword. The current findings also offer sport psychology consultants possible context-specific insights (e.g., importance of seme) and strategies (e.g., management of attentional focus, self-regulation techniques) for assisting kenshi in preparing for competitive situations. Extraction-site alveolar remodeling is a major concern due to negative volumetric hard and soft tissue changes that inevitably limit rehabilitation options and diminish esthetic outcomes. Surgical techniques employed to minimize alveolar dimensional changes are not always predictable. Utilizing a socket shield with an immediate surgical implant procedure helps maintain a thin portion of the root in the vestibular area and thus minimizes bone resorption, especially at the coronal cortical aspect. This case series assesses the dimensional changes in peri-alveolar structures via superimposition of the preoperative and 6-month postoperative 3D digital quantification of soft tissue. Fifty patients with 50 sites fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Implant survival was 100%, with no incidence of complications. Tissue changes were as follows: -0.85 mm at the mesial papilla, -0.95 mm at the distal papilla, -0.7 mm at both the vertical and horizontal central margins, -0.21 mm at a distance 4 mm from the margin, and -0.64 mm at the palatal central margin. The buccal contour was clinically convex in all cases. The site with highest frequency of > 1 mm of dimensional loss was the distal papilla (42% of sites), and the site with the lowest frequency was the point 4 mm from the midfacial margin (0% of sites). For an academic field to remain vital, it is necessary to reflect upon its conceptual foundations and learn from adjacent disciplines. On that note, aesthetics can provide significant insights into advertising. While aesthetic elements have received attention in advertising research, no systematic attempts have been made to provide a comprehensive overview of this literature. The purpose of this conceptual article is to bring different branches of aesthetic theory into advertising studies. Marketers have historically focused on product functionality and often appeal to consumers through explicit messages. This article fills an important gap by delineating and advocating the conceptual foundation of advertising aesthetics as a research area worthy of further attention. In short, we understand advertising aesthetics as the artlike properties of and sensory responses to ads. A review of 309 papers provides the thematic outline of the study. Seven key themes are identified: (1) the nature of advertising aesthetics, (2) advertising creativity, (3) textuality, (4) social aesthetics, (5) cross-cultural differences, (6) the role of media in creating aesthetic opportunities, and (7) aesthetic categories beyond the beautiful and sublime. Purpose: To evaluate the marginal leakage of three different types of bonding agents used with two posterior composites and a giomer, available commercially. Material and methods: Class II box-only cavities were prepared on 90 mandibular first molars with margins extending 1 mm beyond the cementoenamel junction. The samples were divided into nine groups based on three different bonding agents, two different composites, and a giomer. Cavities were restored per the manufacturer's description. Teeth were subjected to a thermocycling procedure (500Ã--, 5°C to 55°C) and dye penetration by immersing in a 2% methylene blue solution (Merck Specialties) for 24 hours. The marginal adaptation was evaluated as a continuous margin at the gingival level under a stereomicroscope. The results were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. Results: The results of the groups with the total-etch technique showed no statistical difference between the nanohybrid Filtek Z250 XT (3M ESPE) and fine hybrid SwissTEC composite (Coltène\Whaledent AG). The groups with the self-etch technique showed no statistical difference when used with either of the two composites. The acid-etch technique showed better marginal adaptation than the self-etch technique. When the giomer (Beautifil II, Shofu) was used with the total-etch technique, it showed better adaptation than when used with the self-etch technique but overall showed more marginal leakage than the composites. Conclusion: The total-etch technique provided better marginal adaptation for the composites and giomer compared to the self-etch technique. Clinical significance: The demand for esthetic restorations continues to increase, and composite restorations are now considered the material of choice for Class II cavities. There are various concerns with composite restorations, one of them being good marginal adaptation to increase the life of the restoration. This study evaluated marginal leakage with the nanohybrid composite Filtek Z250 XT, fine hybrid composite SwissTEC, and a giomer when used with the total-etch technique and self-etch technique and reported satisfactory adaptation with the total-etch technique. Purpose: To compare volumetric changes in buccal soft tissue and pink esthetic scores after immediate implant placement performed with a socket shield technique (SST) or the conventional technique (CT). Materials and Methods: This parallel-arm, randomized controlled trial included 22 participants requiring replacement of a single maxillary incisor with an immediate implant. Immediate implants were placed via either the SST or the CT, with patients randomly allocated to one of the two groups. All implants underwent an immediate loading protocol. Definitive crowns were placed 6 months after implant placement. Scans of casts were recorded with a digital white light scanner before implant placement and at the end of 12 months. Volumetric changes to soft tissues on the buccal aspect were assessed by superimposition of the scanned cast. Esthetic evaluation of the soft tissue was done by evaluating the pink esthetic score (PES) before implant placement and 6 and 12 months after implant placement. Statistical analysis of the data was performed using statistical software (Stata 16.0, StataCorp). Results: The mean volumetric change in buccal soft tissues at the end of 12 months in the SST group was -0.1520 ± 0.86 mm, and in the CT group, it was -0.643 ± 0.35 mm. The difference was statistically significant (P = .001). Higher PES was observed in the SST group at all time intervals. The difference was statistically significant at 6 months (P = .001) and 12 months (P = .007). Do the clothes worn to work impact employees' thoughts and behaviors? Despite the universal necessity of wearing clothes and the fact that employees make decisions about this daily, organizational scholars have not yet addressed this question. We integrate sociometer and enclothed cognition theories to propose that aspects of clothing—their aesthetics, conformity, and uniqueness—hold symbolic meanings that have implications for employees' state self-esteem and subsequent task and relational behaviors (i.e., goal progress, social avoidance). We first provide evidence for the nature of the symbolic meanings associated with these three dimensions of work clothing in a set of within-person experimental studies. The results of a 10-day field study of employees from four organizations generally supported our predictions, showing that daily clothing aesthetics and uniqueness had effects on state self-esteem and downstream behavioral consequences. The effects of daily clothing conformity emerged under the condition of greater interaction frequency with others in the workplace. Nonsurgical rhinoplasty (NSR), colloquially referred to as a "liquid nose job," is a procedure that employs injectable fillers to modify the shape and contour of the nose. This procedure is particularly suited to patients presenting with minor imperfections and nasal defects. The procedure typically entails the injection of hyaluronic acid-based fillers, which are preferred due to their reversibility and safety profile. Although rare, dangerous complications are possible, therefore it is important to be aware of the risks associated with performing NSR and how to recognise and manage them. This article examines a number of potential complications associated with the procedure, including minor side effects such as bruising and swelling, as well as more serious risks such as vascular obstruction, skin necrosis and blindness. It is evident that the practitioner's experience and anatomical knowledge are of paramount importance in order to minimise the aforementioned risks. The aim of this review is to delineate the potential hazards associated with NSR. It is imperative that both clinicians and patients are cognizant that NSR is not a risk-free procedure. Background: Current research on thumb polydactyly reconstruction focusses primarily on clinical evaluations. Details on aesthetic outcomes are relatively lacking. This study aims to address this gap by: (1) investigating the effectiveness of surgical treatment in achieving symmetrical thumb size, length and girth; (2) assessing aesthetic outcomes from a caregiver's perspective and (3) identifying key factors that influence aesthetic outcomes to inform strategies to improve surgical reconstruction. Methods: Patients who underwent thumb polydactyly reconstruction were recalled for assessment. Objective measurements of both the reconstructed and unaffected thumbs were taken. Surgical scars were evaluated by measuring their length and using the Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS). To assess the appearance of the reconstructed thumbs, we used the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) through surveys completed by the primary caregiver of each patient. Caregivers also provided reasons for any unsatisfactory appearance outcomes and we correlated these with objective factors. Results: This study included 26 paediatric patients with 29 reconstructed thumbs. The mean VAS score for overall thumb appearance was 7.8 ± 2.2. While surgical treatment achieved symmetry in most anthropometric measures, reconstructed thumbs had smaller nail plates and greater joint angulation. Caregiver assessment of thumb width was closely related to the objective interphalangeal joint (IPJ) girth measurements, and perceived excessive angulation was related to the IPJ angle. Symmetry was not associated with nail fold width or scar location. However, perceived scar prominence was linked to VSS score and scar location. Conclusions: Thumb polydactyly reconstruction achieves symmetry in size, length and girth, but nail plate size and joint angulation remain significant challenges. Despite this, caregivers are generally satisfied with the overall appearance. This paper examines the inner conflicts experienced by composers who survived the atomic bombing, as reflected in their musical works associated with Hiroshima. Approximately 30 years after the bombing, both Masaru Kawasaki and Masayuki Takenishi completed pieces related to their severe experiences. By exploring these pieces—Kawasaki' Prayer Music No. 1 'Dirge' and Takenishi's Aishō I, II—it becomes apparent that the process of articulating their catastrophic experiences, including extended periods of silence, serve as significant tokens of trauma and memory. These works differ from other studies of musical representation of trauma as they encapsulate unique dual aspects: guilt and duty. The feelings of guilt and responsibility, as conceptualised by Robert J. Lifton's idea of 'imprinted death' among Hiroshima survivors, are reflected in their compositions. This dual burden, including the professional duty to convey their experiences as musical testimonies for future generations, distinguishes their work from other narrative activities expected in post-war Japanese society. Engaging with these musical witnesses, which are imbued with the imprinted deaths of numerous individuals, including Kawasaki and Takenishi, introduces another layer of conflict between aesthetic appreciation and the ethical and historical dimensions for me. Charles Lamb was the author of whimsical "familiar essays" but famously also an East India Company clerk, and the relationship between these two aspects of what might broadly be called his "writing career" is sometimes framed as directly antagonistic, as merely irritating, or even as mutually reinforcing. I argue however that Lamb's own shifting sense of both "engrossing" and "penning" for a living, expressed in his essays and correspondence, was more complex than these dualisms, and that this condition informed deeper tensions that he creatively explored and adapted throughout his career. It is via analyses of Lamb's works within the historical and theoretical context of his office milieu, an approach informed by readings of Jacques Lacan and Bruno Latour, that I argue his creative engagement with inchoate bureaucratic structures provides a concrete basis for considering the aesthetic motifs and philosophical preoccupations typical of Romanticism more broadly. As visual cultures scholars have argued, visual expression and aesthetic artifacts largely comprise the modern world. This includes the production of the school as an institution. A critical approach to education therefore must reinscribe students with the ability to see what educational processes attempt to hide and to construct an understanding of the real for themselves. To illustrate this argument, we explore the production of visuality within data science education as one example of how the visual manifests within schools. In response, we propose a visual literacy informed approach to engaging students with data, one that expands beyond contemporary forms of critical data literacy by involving an ontological critique of educational aestheticization. To ground this work, we examine the role of visuality and aesthetics within the implementation of co-designed arts-infused data science projects in four US middle schools. In analyzing interviews with teachers and students, we uncover a series of tensions that reveal the ongoing influence of school visualities alongside the potential for student generated images to amplify their right to look. We therefore argue that critical pedagogies must not only involve reading and critiquing aesthetic artifacts but also engage students in a critique of visuality itself. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Constructed languages, frequently invented to support world-building in fantasy and science fiction genres, are often intended to sound similar to the characteristics of the people who speak them. The aims of this study are (1) to investigate whether some fictional languages, such as Orkish whose speakers are portrayed as villainous, are rated more negatively by listeners than, for example, the Elvish languages, even when they are all produced without emotional involvement in the voice; and (2) to investigate whether the rating results can be related to the sound structure of the languages under investigation. An online rating experiment with three 7-point semantic differential scales was conducted, in which three sentences from each of 12 fictional languages (Neo-Orkish, Quenya, Sindarin, Khuzdul, Adûnaic, Klingon, Vulcan, Atlantean, Dothraki, Na'vi, Kesh, ʕuiʕuid) were rated, spoken by a female and a male speaker. The results from 129 participants indicate that Klingon and Dothraki do indeed sound more unpleasant, evil, and aggressive than the Elvish languages Sindarin and Quenya. Furthermore, this difference in rating is predicted by certain characteristics of the sound structure, such as the percentage of non-German sounds and the percentage of voicing. Comics have been especially vulnerable to censorship. A history of repression has been well documented in the scholarship and is part of fan lore and culture – so much so, in fact, that the topic risks becoming calcified. This paper argues for a broader examination of free speech and comics, the better to understand how the creation and circulation of texts shapes the medium. Here, Neil Gaiman serves as a valuable case study, a creator who not only advocates for free speech but whose intellectual formation depended upon it. Attending to the liberalising forces of mid-Twentieth Century, the paper illustrates how the availability of texts was essential to the formation of Gaiman's distinct comics aesthetic. Harley Quinn is not only DC's ever-yearning romantic Joker victim – a libidinous, self-centred coarse bumpkin in suspenders, who regularly gets thrashed without mercy – but also an eccentric clown and violent vaude-villain. We argue that the diversity of Harley Quinn's personality as portrayed by different writers and impersonated by cosplay fans is intrinsically connected to the complex and multi-dimensional humour that is associated with the character. Drawing on humour and clown theories, we unpack Harley Quinn's obvious but under-examined humour facets – including her humorous contradictions, meta-humour and clown iconography and routines – with the aim of better understanding her specific comics aesthetics and their humorous momentum both within her fictional worlds and beyond. The article discusses an episode in twentieth-century Soviet-Armenian literature — select works depicting Stalin's labour camps. Reflecting on the works of the Soviet-Armenian writers Gurgen Mahari, Mkrtich Armen, and Vache Sargsyan, it explores camp experience within the context of Soviet state policies. Responding to the policies of Khrushchev's Thaw during the 1950s-1960s, these writers felt they had a 'moral' duty to write the 'objective' truth about Stalin's labour camps, thus encountering the difficulties of representing personal experience artistically. Armen and Mahari, in some of their stories written in the late 1950s, and Sargsyan, in his three-volume novel Akeghdama, written in the 1960s, tried to abstract their lived camp experience to represent it as universal. The writers employed the device of writing about their experience in third person and ended up trapped by their own device. They created a world in which objective conditions and people's lives were separated and opposed to each other. By polarising the terrible conditions of forced life and the good character of the inmates, the writers were unintentionally becoming part of Stalin's political agenda of the 1930s, which simplified the relationship between the individual and the building of socialism, defining it as an act of honour, glory, valour, and heroism. Mahari revised his approach in the mid-1960s; turning himself into a protagonist and portraying exilic life as an endless chain of compulsions and accidents, he showed in a series of works how an exile could survive the forced conditions by transcending them through imagination. This article focuses on the relationship between Kant's reference to our own body in the context of problems of directionality and the type of resources that, according to him, are necessary to distinguish left and right and to orient ourselves in space. It challenges the almost universally accepted idea that the principle formulated in Dissertatio 15C (namely, that two incongruent counterparts cannot be distinguished by notae) is fatally flawed. While arguing that this principle is correct in its strongest formulation, the article offers a unified line of reasoning that runs precisely from Dissertatio 15C to the presence of the body in 1768/1786 and extends to include several important features of the Transcendental Aesthetic of the first Critique. Background: The aesthetic goals of midface surgery in Apert syndrome are to correct the multi-planar midface deficiency and normalize facial ratios. This study characterizes the long-term photogrammetric outcomes of midface advancement in Apert syndrome. Methods: Patients with Apert syndrome who underwent midface distraction from 2000 to 2023 were retrospectively reviewed. Soft tissue measurements were applied to preoperative (T0), short-term postoperative (T1), and long-term postoperative (T2) photographs. Long-term changes were compared between subcranial and transcranial procedures, segmental and non-segmental osteotomies, and individual techniques. Frontal facial dimensions at time T2 were compared to age- and sex-matched normal controls from the NIMH-ChEFS face database. Results: Twenty patients had postoperative follow-up of T1 = 0.6 ± 0.4 and T2 = 4.7 ± 1.1 years and were compared to 40 normal controls. From time T0 to T2, middle facial third height increased (26.1 ± 3.0% to 27.8 ± 2.6%, p = 0.026), canthal tilt improved (− 7.6° ± 3.7° to − 3.9° ± 4.4°, p < 0.001), and facial convexity increased (182.9° ± 6.2° to 167.9° ± 8.6°, p < 0.001). From time T1 to T2, facial convexity flattened (159.4° ± 10.1° to 167.9° ± 8.6°, p < 0.001). Compared to controls, patients at time T2 had shorter middle facial third height (27.8 ± 2.6% vs. 32.0 ± 1.9%, p < 0.001) and reverse canthal tilt (− 3.9° ± 4.4° vs. 5.4° ± 2.6°, p < 0.001). Conclusions: A tailored treatment approach to the Apert midface yields varying degrees of resolution of central midfacial shortening, canthal tilt, and facial concavity at 5 years postoperatively. A slight reduction in facial convexity over time, likely reflecting pseudorelapse in the setting of sagittal overcorrection, should be anticipated. The expansion of art audiences and the creation of new forms, agents, and models of artistic practice have transformed the very definition of art, challenging elitist notions of "great art." Dewey's Art as Experience was essential to this transformation. This understanding and defense of an art that has not lost contact with ordinary audiences, which was film at first, extends to widespread cultural practices (internet videos, video games, TV series, popular music, etc.). They are places where artistic and hermeneutic authority is reappropriated and where agents are reempowered through the constitution of individual experiences. Yet the question of their status as art remains. My first aim here is to use Dewey's analyses in Art as Experience to assert not only the importance of popular culture in human lives but also its status as art. I shall bring together Stanley Cavell and Dewey, often seen as opposites in their approach to pragmatism, as inventors and defenders of an ordinary aesthetics; then, starting from Robert Warshow and Richard Shusterman, I propose a new theoretical inheritance of Art as Experience. John Dewey's second chapter of Art as Experience, "Ethereal Things," captures in a nutshell a radically new approach to philosophy where the aesthetic takes center stage. The key is to see the aesthetic as something much broader than it is generally conceived. It covers not just art and nature, or even art, nature, and everyday life, but life itself, and in particular human life. But human life is seen as continuous with the life of the animal, the live creature interacting with its environment. Experience begins with sense perception that is, itself, a negotiation of past and present, where things are imbued with meaning as cause and effect are turned into intention and consequence. Experience also has a range going from mere mechanical perception and labeling towards something much more complex. The highest culmination of experience is a mystic-like consummation, a point at which experience is a joyous reward of expanding and enriched life. Dewey speaks of "the power of sense to absorb the most highly spiritualized ideas." One can see him, in this regard, as the opposite of Plato, for whom the sensuous world, at best, imitates the world of Ideas. Our focus is on frameworks in which art-related experience is not only a distinct field of aesthetic research but is also a factor in understanding of art as a process modeled upon all other experiences. We outline philosophical, aesthetic, and educational contexts inspired by Dewey's multifaceted aesthetics, particularly in connection with contemporary considerations on democracy, the humanities, and creative practices. My aim in this article is to briefly reconstruct the reception of Dewey's Art as Experience and more generally of his aesthetics in Italy. In order to do so, my contribution will be divided into three parts, corresponding to the three editions that Dewey's book has had in Italy. In the first part, I will trace the early influences and the debate with Benedetto Croce, showing the "idealistic encirclement" suffered by Dewey's aesthetics, which led to the first Italian translation of Dewey's book in 1951. In the second part, I will trace the influence of Dewey's aesthetics from 1951 to 2006, showing first the Marxist and Catholic critiques, then the first tentative attempts at a reinterpretation outside the idealist domain, and finally the second edition of Art as Experience in Italy 1995. The third part considers the renaissance of Dewey's aesthetics in Italy after Giovanni Matteucci's new translation in 2006 and Luigi Russo's work in 2007. The article concludes with a brief consideration of Dewey's significance for the contemporary Italian aesthetic debate and an attempt to identify a specific Italian interpretation of Dewey's aesthetics that can be traced in the effort to bring Dewey into dialogue with other authors of the modern aesthetic tradition. This article provides a comprehensive overview of John Dewey's impact on education and aesthetics in Korea and Japan. While initially focused on education, the 1990s saw a growing interest in Dewey's aesthetics, with Art as Experience partially translated in 1999. The Korean perspective on Dewey's aesthetics extends mostly to philosophy of education and art education, but there are also efforts to deepen the understanding of Dewey's aesthetics itself. Also, the interdisciplinary impact of Dewey's aesthetics can be found in fields such as design and human-computer interaction. In Japan, Dewey's aesthetics received limited focus in spite of the "Dewey boom" from 1945 to 1970. Studies since the 2010s reconnect Dewey's aesthetics to his social and cultural context, highlighting its relevance to contemporary issues and emphasizing the public nature of Dewey's concept of democracy. The article also traces the historical development of Dewey studies in Japan, acknowledging the pioneering work of Tsurumi Shunsuke, who integrated Dewey's aesthetics into Japan's social fabric. While recognizing the biases and division of understanding in Dewey studies, the article concludes with a description of the renewed interest in Art as Experience in both countries since the 2010s. Although the reception of John Dewey's Art as Experience has not been totally ignored by secondary literature, the few works that have dealt with the subject have been restricted to the English-speaking context, and more specifically to the United States. This essay sought to consider the reception of Dewey's book on aesthetics in the context of Spanish-speaking countries, with special attention to Mexico, Spain, Colombia, and Argentina. The hypothesis put forward and supported here is that Art as Experience had a late reception due to political and cultural factors in these countries and that it is at present that we really find a deeper reception of this work, with an increasing number of publications about the subject. This essay introduces a special issue devoted to studying the global impact and rich, ongoing legacy of John Dewey's aesthetic masterpiece Art as Experience, ninety years after its initial publication in 1934. After noting the role that the Journal of Aesthetic Education played in assessing the book's influence, this introductory essay surveys the international reception of the book by exploring its history of translation and explaining the difficulties of its reception in certain countries. This survey demonstrates that the international reception of Art as Experience was largely retrospective, coming long after the book's initial appearance and apparently benefiting from the rise of neopragmatism and the international attention given to this new pragmatist expression. The translation and reception history of Dewey's book also reveals the economic and political factors that shape the international circulation of ideas. After five essays that focus on the reception of Art as Experience in cultures where it was translated, the special issue concludes with three more essays that discuss how the book's ideas can be applied to contemporary issues in aesthetics and philosophy more generally, while suggesting ways where the book's goals could also be furthered by treating its limitations. Modern China's acceptance of Dewey's legacy of aesthetic thought is divided into three main periods. In 1906–49, Dewey's Art as Experience was noticed, but due to the fact that China was more concerned with the social realities and national crisis at that time, its aesthetic thought appeared as an accessory to Dewey's social philosophy and educational thought, and its rich significance was properly realized only within the practice of aesthetic education. From 1949 to 1978, Dewey's aesthetics was effectively suppressed through China's ideological storms. From 1978 to the present, benefitting through China's policies of reform and opening, Dewey's aesthetics gradually gained the attention of Chinese academics and found expression in considerable research that develops the book's legacy in distinctive forms of contemporary Chinese aesthetics: life aesthetics, somaesthetics, and ecological aesthetics. While there have been previous works that explored methods to enhance the aesthetics of images, the automated beautification of 3D shapes has been limited to specific shapes such as 3D face models. In this paper, we introduce a framework to automatically enhance the aesthetics of general 3D shapes. Our approach employs a reference-based beautification strategy. We first performed data collection to gather the aesthetics ratings of various 3D shapes to create a 3D shape aesthetics dataset. Then we perform reference-based editing to edit the input shape and beautify it by making it look more like some reference shape that is aesthetic. Specifically, we propose a reference-guided global deformation framework to coherently deform the input shape such that its structural proportions will be closer to those of the reference shape. We then optionally transplant some local aesthetic parts from the reference to the input to obtain the beautified output shapes. Comparisons show that our reference-guided 3D deformation algorithm outperforms existing techniques. Furthermore, quantitative and qualitative evaluations demonstrate that the performance of our aesthetics enhancement framework is consistent with both human perception and existing 3D shape aesthetics assessment. In the 1970s and 1980s, several Asian governments, including those of Hong Kong, Malaysia, South Korea, and Taiwan, enacted varying measures to proscribe long hair on men. Singapore's government was no exception in this regard, barring even longhaired global male celebrities from entry. Adopting a social semiotic perspective, this article traces the vicissitudes of the male hairscape in Singapore from the colonial period to contemporary times, with a view to uncovering its differential indexical meanings. It argues that the stigmatization of long hair was part of a moral-aesthetic regimen of hair hygiene that fashioned shorthaired men as poster boys of a young, disciplined, and aspirational nation, while longhaired men were discursively constructed as a bad influence and the archnemesis of a desired work culture and social life. A large keloid on the right earlobe that extended to the infraauricular region was the reason for the 42-year-old woman's referral for treatment. The entire thickness of the earlobe was implicated in the surgical defect that resulted from the severe keloid excision. We employed a straightforward technique to provide a pleasing appearance while repairing the entire lobe in a single stage without the need for grafts. Aesthetic considerations are integral to the competitive advantage and value creation of tourism destinations. This study aims to explore the modulating role of the artistic quality of a heritage architectural style in tourists' travel interest and aesthetic pleasure. Focusing on Hongcun, a renowned Hui-style architecture scenic area in China, this research employed public opinion surveys to quantitatively analyse travel interest, aesthetic pleasure, and the artistic quality of the architectural style (including variety, unity, typicality, and novelty). The results indicate that typicality and variety play a significant role in modulating the relationship between travel interest and aesthetic pleasure, whereas the modulating effects of unity and novelty are not significant. These findings deepen the understanding of how tourists' aesthetic pleasure is impacted by their tourist interests. By demonstrating that tourists' interests significantly enhance aesthetic pleasure and promote it through the typicality and variety of heritage architecture, they advance the theory of destination aesthetics in cultural heritage tourism. These insights guide tourism planners and heritage managers in designing interpretive content and tour itineraries that highlight the aesthetic value of heritage architecture, thereby enhancing the overall visitor experience. With massive coffee sales comes a detrimental environmental impact due to high disposable cup usage. This study examined how Starbucks portable cup design and environmental concerns shape green purchase intention by extending the TPB model. Structural analysis revealed that aesthetics, symbolism, functionality, and environmental concerns influenced consumer attitudes, contributing to purchase intention alongside perceived behavioral control and subjective norms within the TPB framework. Multigroup analysis found that symbolism has a stronger impact on females' attitudes, while functionality has a stronger impact on males' attitudes. This text reviews a science play that has emerged from a collaboration between performing artists and scientists based in Lund, Sweden. It argues that the play, titled The Right Way, can productively be understood as 'science metatheater'. Thus, it belongs to a genre which knowingly and self-ironically brings the viewer's attention to the staged nature of the theater performance. As such, science metatheater moves beyond placing 'science on stage'. Instead, it seeks to place science theater itself on stage. By doing so, it front-stages the challenges of 'Sci-Arts' collaborations between scientists and artists, in which competing concerns – aesthetic, epistemological and communicational – may come into conflict with each other. Objectives: To describe and assess the vertical sectioning technique for mid vault dissection in patients undergoing primary and secondary rhinoplasty. Methods: A retrospective review of 208 patients undergoing primary or revision rhinoplasty utilizing the vertical sectioning technique. The Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) scale was administered to patients pre- and post-operatively. A detailed description of the technique is presented. Results: Mean follow up was 8.59 ± 7.30 months. Spreader grafts were used in 185 patients (89%), upper lateral cartilage autospreader flaps were utilized in 16 patients (7.7%), and both spreader grafts and autospreader flaps were used in 7 patients (3.4%). Ten primary rhinoplasty patients (4.8%) and 3 revision rhinoplasty patients (4.5%) complained of functional nasal obstruction post-operatively. At time of last follow-up, there was a significant improvement in mean NOSE scores for patients receiving spreader grafts (71.2 ± 21.4-21.5 ± 2.8, P <.001), autospreader flaps (69.2 ± 25.9-17.2 ± 21.5, P <.001), and both (57.9 ± 35.0-26.1 ± 20.2, P =.03). Conclusion: The vertical sectioning technique respects the anatomic, functional, and esthetic relationship of the middle vault, while maximizing cartilage preservation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Critical engagement with spaces of exposure is an important research agenda in the contemporary social sciences and humanities. Developing and extending this agenda, this paper offers an account of how scenes of exposure at border zones are mediated materially, aesthetically, and politically by forms of envelopment. Specifically, it discusses the geographies of exposure and envelopment that unfold through the use and re‐use of the emergency blanket at these zones. Fabricated from metallised polymer films, emergency blankets are used commonly to provide thermal protection for bodies at risk of exposure in a range of situations. More than functional, however, these objects also have a distinctive aesthetic allure. By attending to the material and aesthetic qualities of the emergency blanket, this paper explores its visibility and significance in scenes of exposure at border zones. Highlighting how the blanket is deployed as a device of minimal comfort, the paper then considers artistic works that repurpose this object as part of a creative critique of conditions at these zones. Drawing on the work of Stacy Alaimo and Ronak Kapadia, among others, the paper develops the concept of insurgent envelopment to understand how artists use the emergency blanket in works that simultaneously foreground, disrupt, and reimagine relations between exposure and envelopment. To satisfy the requirements of architectural aesthetic and function demands, unequal-span composite frames are widely employed in practical engineering applications. However, there has been relatively limited investigation on the collapse-resistant performance of such frame structures. To elucidate the collapse behavior of the unequal-span multistory frame structures under the scenario of removing an internal column, two one-third scaled three-story planar frames with unequal (2/3:1) and equal (1:1) spans were subjected to static testing, and the anticollapse performance including the load-bearing capacities, failure modes, development of axial force, and load-transferring mechanisms was determined. The test results revealed that the unequal-span specimens reached their maximum load during the early stage of small deformation, whereas the equal-span specimens achieved their maximum load at the final failure position owing to the collaborate action of equal-span double-span beams. Subsequently, numerical modeling methods were validated using the tests results, and the influence of the axial compression ratios of adjacent columns on the structural collapse resistance was examined. Furthermore, the collapse behavior of unequal-span composite frames was further investigated using full-scale models, with a focus on three types unequal-span cases for double-span beams, and specific resistant contribution coefficients were proposed as an crucial design reference for unequal-span composite frames to mitigate progressive collapse.
