Purpose: Performing back squats with elastic bands has been widely used in resistance training. Although research demonstrated greater training effects obtained from adding elastic bands to the back squat, little is known regarding the optimal elastic resistance and how it affects neuromuscular performance. This study aimed to compare the force, velocity, power, and muscle activity during back squats with different contributions of elastic resistance. Methods: Thirteen basketball players performed 3 repetitions of the back squat at 85% of 1-repetition maximum across 4 conditions: (1) total load from free weight and (2) 20%, (3) 30%, and (4) 40% of the total load from elastic band and the remaining load from free weight. The eccentric and concentric phases of the back squat were divided into upper, middle, and bottom phases. Results: In the eccentric phase, mean velocity progressively increased with increasing elastic resistance, and muscle activity of the vastus medialis and rectus femoris significantly increased with the largest elastic resistance in the upper phase (P ≤.036). In the concentric phase, mean power (P ≤.021) and rate of force development (P ≤.002) significantly increased with increasing elastic resistance. Furthermore, muscle activity of the vastus lateralis and vastus medialis significantly improved with the largest elastic resistance in the upper phases (P ≤.021). Conclusion: Velocity, power, rate of force development, and selective muscle activity increased as the elastic resistance increased in different phases during the back-squat exercise. We provide an econometric study of the adoption of internet banking, a case of a potentially disruptive digital technology which could devalue/replace an incumbent legacy. Our aim is to better understand the extent to which it disrupted the market structure where incumbents start with a strong customer base. We study both regional integration and national concentration dimensions of market structure in EU member states during the period of 1997–2018. We find that internet banking was initially introduced earlier in more concentrated markets. Although consumer uptake was slower over time than in less concentrated markets, the initial higher consumer penetration in more concentrated markets was sustained until market maturity. We further find a substantial de-concentrating effect of internet banking, and evidence of integration in previously regionalized markets following uptake. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Limited research into professional rugby union players' experiences of seeking formal support for their mental health exists, despite comparable rates of mental health issues among elite rugby players with the general population. This qualitative study explored professional players' actual experiences of accessing Rugby Players Ireland's mental well-being service, via separate focus group discussions with professional players (n = 5) and player development managers (n = 4) who refer players into the service. An inductive reflexive thematic analysis identified three themes detailing players' (a) journey to disclosure of their mental health difficulties, (b) their expectations and engagement with the well-being service, and (c) participants' reflections on mental health experiences in a high-performance environment. Embedding mental health as a key component of player development in high-performance environments, improving mental health literacy, normalizing mental health experiences, and encouraging help-seeking would help promote player well-being and support holistic development alongside sporting performance. Recently, LiGa 5 O 8 was claimed to be a p -type dopable ultrawide-bandgap oxide, based on measurements of undoped material. Here, the electronic properties of potential acceptor dopant impurities in LiGa 5 O 8 are calculated using hybrid density functional theory to evaluate their potential for causing p -type conductivity. As with the related compound LiGaO 2 , the heavy oxygen-derived valence bands lead to stable self-trapped holes in LiGa 5 O 8. Acceptor defects and dopants also bind trapped holes (or small polarons), which lead to large acceptor ionization energies. The calculations here indicate that neither native acceptor defects (such as cation vacancies or antisites) nor impurity dopants can give rise to p -type conductivity in LiGa 5 O 8. First-principles calculations of defects and electron–phonon interactions play a critical role in the design and optimization of materials for electronic and optoelectronic devices. The late Audrius Alkauskas made seminal contributions to developing rigorous first-principles methodologies for the computation of defects and electron–phonon interactions, especially in the context of understanding the fundamental mechanisms of carrier recombination in semiconductors. Alkauskas was also a pioneer in the field of quantum defects, helping to build a first-principles understanding of the prototype nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond, as well as identifying novel defects. Here, we describe the important contributions made by Alkauskas and his collaborators and outline fruitful research directions that Alkauskas would have been keen to pursue. Magic-sized nanocrystals (MSNCs) grow via jumps between very specific sizes. This discrete growth is a possible avenue toward monodisperse nanomaterials that are completely identical in size and shape. In spite of this potential, MSNCs have seen limited study and application due to their poor optical properties. Specifically, MSNCs are limited in their range of emission wavelengths and commonly exhibit poor photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs). Here, we report silver doping of CdSe MSNCs as a strategy to improve the optical properties of MSNCs. Silver doping leads to controllable shifts in emission wavelength and significant increases in MSNC PLQYs. These results suggest that doped MSNCs are interesting candidates for displays or luminescent solar concentrators. Finally, we demonstrate that the doping process does not affect the magic size of our MSNCs, allowing further photophysical study of this class of nanomaterial. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Apolipoprotein A-I (ApoA-I), the primary component of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol primes β-cells to increase insulin secretion, however, the mechanisms involved are not fully defined. Here, we aimed to confirm ApoA-I receptors in β-cells and delineate ApoA-I-receptor pathways in β-cell insulin output. An LRC-TriCEPS experiment was performed using the INS-1E rat β-cell model and ApoA-I for unbiased identification of ApoA-I receptors. Identified targets, alongside ATP binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1) (included control) were silenced in the same cells, and insulin secretion (ELISA) and mitochondrial metabolism (seahorse) were assessed with/without ApoA-I priming. Human β-cell expression data was used to investigate ApoA-I receptor pathways in type 2 diabetes (T2D). Scavenger receptor B1 (SR-BI) and regulator of microtubule dynamics 1 were identified as ApoA-I targets. SR-BI or ABCA1 silencing abolished ApoA-I induced increases in insulin secretion. ApoA-I priming increased mitochondrial OXPHOS, however this was greatly attenuated with SR-BI or ABCA1 silencing. Supporting this, human β-cell expression data investigations found SR-BI and ABCA1 to be correlated with genes associated with mitochondrial pathways. In all, SR-BI and ABCA1 correlated with 73 and 3 genes differentially expressed in T2D, respectively. We confirm that SR-BI and ABCA1 are the primary β-cell ApoA-I receptors and demonstrate that ApoA-I priming enhances β-cell insulin secretion via the upregulation of mitochondrial metabolism through ApoA-I-SR-BI and ApoA-I-ABCA1 pathways. We propose that SR-BI relies on mitochondrial and exocytotic pathways, while ABCA1 depends solely on mitochondrial pathways. Knowledge of the geographic distribution and connectivity of marine populations is essential for ecological understanding and informing management. Previous works have assessed spatial structure by quantifying exchange using Lagrangian particle-tracking simulations, but their scope of analysis is limited by their use of predefined subpopulations. To instead delineate subpopulations emerging naturally from marine population connectivity, we interpret this connectivity as a network, enabling the use of powerful analytic tools from the field of network theory. The modelling approach presented here uses particle-tracking to construct a transport network, and then applies the community detection algorithm Infomap to identify subpopulations that exhibit high internal connectivity and sparse connectivity with other subpopulations. An established quality metric, the coherence ratio, and a new metric we introduce indicating self-recruitment to subpopulations, dubbed the fortress ratio, are used to interpret community-level exchange. We use the Atlantic sea scallop (Placopecten magellanicus) in the northwest Atlantic as a case study. Results suggest that genetic lineages of P. magellanicus demonstrate spatial substructure that depends on horizontal transport, vertical motility, and suitable habitat. Our results support connectivity previously characterized on Georges Bank and Mid-Atlantic Bight. The Gulf of St. Lawrence genetic lineage is found to consist of five subpopulations that are classified as being a sink, source, permeable, or impermeable using quality metrics. Distal fibula fracture is a common injury of the lower limb. Significantly displaced distal fibula fracture is treated with surgical fixation under general, spinal, or regional anesthesia. We present a case of displaced distal fibula fracture with both the regional anesthesia and operation performed by the same attending orthopedic surgeon. The patient underwent successful ultrasound‐guided regional anesthesia as well as open reduction and internal fixation. Background: Persons (henceforth, women) who have hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are at risk of premature cardiovascular disease (CVD). While largely preventable through lifestyle management, many women and clinicians are unaware of the risk. Based on prior research, we developed a question prompt tool (QPT) on preventing and managing CVD after HDP. The purpose of this study was to refine QPT design. Methods: We recruited Canadian women who had HDP and clinicians who might care for them using multiple strategies, conducted telephone interviews with consenting participants, and used qualitative description and inductive content analysis to derive themes. Results: We interviewed 21 women who varied in HDP type, CVD status, years since HDP pregnancy, age, geography and ethno-cultural group; and 21 clinicians who varied in specialty (midwife, nurse practitioner, family physician, internist, obstetrician, cardiologist), geography and years in practice. Participating women and clinicians agreed on needed improvements: more instructions, lay and gender-neutral language, links to additional information, more space for answers, graphic appeal, and both print and electronic format. Both groups identified similar barriers: clinicians lack time/willingness, and low language/health literacy and access to technology among women; enablers: translated, credible source/endorser, culturally relevant, organized by health trajectory stages; and likely benefits: raise awareness, empower women, encourage them to adopt healthy lifestyle. Women desired exposure to the QPT before or during pregnancy, while clinicians recommended waiting until postpartum to avoid overwhelming women. Similarly, most women said the QPT should be available through multiple avenues to empower them for health self-advocacy, while clinicians thought they should introduce the QPT to women, and decide when and which questions to address. To mitigate reluctance, clinicians recommended self-directed educational materials accompany the QPT. Conclusions: We will use this information to refine QPT design and plan for future evaluation. If found to be effective and widely disseminated, the QPT could improve awareness and communication about this issue, and may reduce CVD risk in many women who have hypertensive pregnancies. Background and Aims Freshwater nitrogen inputs are increasing globally, altering the structure and function of wetland ecosystems adapted to low nutrient conditions. Carnivorous wetland plants of the genus Utricularia are hypothesized to reduce their reliance on carnivory and increase their assimilation of environmental nutrients when the supply of ambient nutrients increases. Despite success in using stable isotope approaches to quantify carnivory of terrestrial carnivorous plants, quantifying carnivory of aquatic Utricularia requires improvement. Methods We developed stable isotope mixing models to quantify aquatic plant carnivory and used these models to measure dietary changes of three Utricularia species, Utricularia australis , U. gibba and U. uliginosa , in 11 wetlands across a 794-km gradient in eastern Australia. Diet was assessed using multiple models that compared variations in the natural-abundance nitrogen isotope composition (δ15N) of Utricularia spp. with that of non-carnivorous plants, and environmental and carnivorous nitrogen sources. Key Results Carnivory supplied 40–100 % of plant nitrogen. The lowest carnivory rates coincided with the highest availability of ammonium and dissolved organic carbon. Conclusions Our findings suggest that Utricularia populations may adapt to high nutrient environments by shifting away from energetically costly carnivory. Background: Participation in recreational and competitive sports can predispose people to musculoskeletal injuries. Chronic overuse with insufficient recovery, overloading, and direct contact can result in acute primary tendon ruptures. There is scarce literature regarding the epidemiology of sports-related acute primary tendon ruptures in the United States (US). Purpose: To identify the incidence rate (IR) of sports-related acute primary tendon ruptures presenting to US emergency departments using the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) database and describe the trends in the IR from 2001 to 2020. Study Design: Descriptive epidemiology study. Methods: The NEISS database was queried using injury case narratives; cases with a clear diagnosis of an acute primary tendon rupture were included in the final analysis. National estimates, estimated IRs (reported as per 1,000,000 person-years at risk), and temporal trends in the annual IR (reported as average annual percent change) of acute primary tendon ruptures were calculated using NEISS sample estimates and US Census Bureau population estimates. Results: An estimated total of 141,382 patients (95% confidence interval [CI], 107,478-175,286) presented to US emergency departments with a sports-related tendon rupture over the study period (IR, 22.9 person-years at risk [95% CI, 17.4-28.3]). The mean age was 37.7 years (95% CI, 37.0-38.5). Of all cases of a tendon rupture identified from 2001 to 2020, 60.1% were secondary to exercise/sports-related injury mechanisms. An Achilles tendon rupture was the most common injury, representing 55.9% of cases. Basketball was the most common sports-related injury mechanism, accounting for 36.6% of cases. The overall injury rate in male patients was 7.7 times that of female patients (IR ratio, 7.7 [95% CI, 4.4-13.5]; P <.05). The annual incidence of all sports-related tendon ruptures in the US increased significantly from 2001 to 2020 (average annual percent change, 1.9 [95% CI, 1.0-2.8]; P <.01). As dental pulp contains the stem cells necessary for regeneration, the tooth should hold the intrinsic capacity for self-repair. A triphasic hybrid dental biocomposite (3HB) composed of biocompatible biopolymers to provide strength, antibacterial properties and protein-based cell support could provide a conducive microenvironment for the regeneration of dental structures. 3HB was incorporated into Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (ProRoot MTA) to construct a malleable injectable implant. Human tooth pulp cells (hDPCs) significantly increased proliferation in the presence of 3HB+MTA compared to 3HB or MTA alone. Cell viability decreased with MTA alone but increased with 3HB and 3HB+MTA. 3HB+MTA was implanted into the residual tooth of drilled Wistar rat M2 molars for up to 45 days. Stereological analysis from micro-CT images showed the volume of the tooth remaining. Histologically, regenerative pulpal architecture was seen invading 3HB. A continuous odontoblastic profile lined a deposit of dentin-like material suggesting reparative dentinogenesis. Overall, no infection or encapsulation was seen. Immunohistochemically, odontoblasts were seen along the margins of the wounded tooth undergoing repair. Mesenchymal cells (MSCs) were seen at the base of the drilled tooth and by 21 days had translocated into the implant itself. Cells stimulating remineralization were highly expressed in the tooth undergoing repair. CD146-positive MSCs were seen in the center of the implant, possibly stimulating remineralization. In conclusion, behavior of 3HB+ in vitro and in vivo provided a promising start as 3HB+MTA may serve as a viable regenerative scaffold for pulp regeneration; however, this should be further studied before clinical use can be considered. Aims: Poor sleep is highly prevalent in young people and increases risk of mental health difficulties, yet access to sleep interventions remains limited. This paper evaluates the use of a sleep intervention delivered by non‐expert practitioners in a secondary care youth mental health service. Method: Assistant psychologists were trained to deliver a six‐session 1:1 cognitive‐behavioural sleep intervention adapted for use with young people with mental health difficulties. A within‐subject design assessed clinical outcomes relating to sleep (Insomnia Severity Index), psychological distress and personal goals (Goal Based Outcome Measures) at four time points. Results: High referral, intervention take‐up (82.82%) and completion (70%) rates were reported, together with high baseline levels of insomnia (Insomnia Severity Index mean 20.47, SD 3.68) and poor sleep efficiency (56.36%, SD 17.23). Fifty‐six young people (average age 19.2 years, SD 3.25) were included in the outcome analysis. Statistically and clinically significant improvements were seen across all outcome measures, with 68% no longer meeting clinical threshold (ISI ≥15) for insomnia at endpoint. Conclusions: This study demonstrates exceptionally high levels of clinical need and engagement with a sleep intervention adapted specifically for young people with mental health difficulties. Whilst limited by the uncontrolled design, large improvements in insomnia and psychological distress support its effectiveness and utility in clinical settings. Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is associated with lower-extremity muscle wasting. Hallmark features of PAD-associated skeletal muscle pathology include loss of skeletal muscle mass, reduced strength and physical performance, increased inflammation, fibrosis, and adipocyte infiltration. At the molecular level, skeletal muscle ischemia has also been associated with gene and microRNA (miRNA) dysregulation. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have been shown to enhance muscle regeneration and improve muscle function in various skeletal muscle injuries. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of intramuscularly delivered human umbilical cord-derived MSCs (hUC-MSCs) on skeletal muscle ischemia. Herein, we report an hUC-MSC-mediated amelioration of ischemia-induced skeletal muscle atrophy and function via enhancement of myofiber regeneration, reduction of tissue inflammation, adipocyte accumulation, and tissue fibrosis. These changes were observed in the absence of cell-mediated enhancement of blood flow recovery as measured by laser Doppler imaging. Furthermore, reduced tissue fibrosis in the hUC-MSC-treated group was associated with upregulation of miR-1, miR-133a, and miR-29b and downregulation of targeted pro-fibrotic genes such as Col1a1 and Fn1. Our results support the use of hUC-MSCs as a novel approach to reduce fibrosis and promote skeletal muscle regeneration after ischemic injury in patients with PAD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The emergency department (ED) may be an optimal setting to screen for substance use disorders (SUDs) and co-occurring psychiatric disorders (CODs). We report on the frequency of problematic substance use and comorbid elevated mental health symptoms detected during a 1-year implementation period of an ED-based SUD/COD screening approach within an established ED HIV screening program. Methods: Patients (N = 1,924) were approached by dedicated HIV screening staff in an urban, Midwestern ED. Patients first completed measures assessing problematic alcohol (Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test-Concise [AUDIT-C]) and substance use across 10 categories of substances (National Institute on Drug Abuse–Modified Alcohol, Smoking, and Substance Involvement Screening Test [NIDA-Modified ASSIST]). Patients with positive alcohol and/or substance use screens completed measures assessing symptoms of depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-9 [PHQ-9]), anxiety (Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 [GAD-7]), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (PTSD Checklist-Civilian [PCL-C]). Results: Patients were predominantly male (60.3%) with a mean age of 38.1 years (SD = 13.0); most identified as White (50.8%) or Black (44.8%). A majority (58.5%) had a positive screen for problematic alcohol and/or other substance use. Of those with a positive substance use screen (n = 1,126), 47.0% had a positive screen on one or more of the mental health measures with 32.1% endorsing elevated depressive symptoms, 29.6% endorsing elevated PTSD-related symptoms, and 28.5% endorsing elevated anxiety symptoms. Conclusions: Among those receiving ED HIV screening, a majority endorsed problematic alcohol and/or other substance use and co-occurring elevated mental health symptoms. Substance use and mental health screening programs that can be integrated within other ED preventive services may enhance the identification of individuals in need of further assessment, referral, or linkage to substance use treatment services. Aims/Hypothesis: In diabetes haptoglobin (Hp) 2 vs Hp 1 allelic product is associated with cardiac and renal complications. Few studies report both Hp phenotype and Hp levels. In a Fenofibrate Intervention and Event Lowering in Diabetes (FIELD) trial substudy we evaluated the Hp phenotype, Hp levels, and fenofibrate effects. Materials and Methods: In 480 adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D) the Hp phenotype was assessed and the Hp level quantified (both using ELISAs assays) in plasma from baseline, after 6 weeks of fenofibrate, and (in n = 200) at 2 years post‐randomization to fenofibrate or placebo. Results: The Hp phenotypes 1‐1, 2‐1, and 2‐2 frequencies were 15%, 49%, and 36%, respectively. Baseline Hp levels differed by phenotype (P < 0.0001) and decreased (median 21%) after 6 weeks fenofibrate in all phenotypes (adjusted mean (95% CI): −0.27 (−0.32, −0.23) mg/mL in Hp 1‐1, −0.29 (−0.31, −0.27) mg/mL in Hp 2‐1 and −0.05 (−0.07, −0.02) mg/mL in Hp 2‐2 (P = 0.005 and P = 0.055 vs Hp 1‐1 and Hp 2‐1, respectively)). At 2 years post‐randomization the Hp levels in the placebo group had returned to baseline, whilst the fenofibrate‐group levels remained similar to the 6 week levels. Conclusions: In type 2 diabetes, Hp levels differ by Hp phenotype and are decreased by fenofibrate in all phenotypes, but the effect is diminished in Hp 2‐2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Harm reduction strategies at music festivals seek to create a safer environment for patrons. The Emerging Drugs Network of Australia–Victoria (EDNAV) project is a state‐wide toxicosurveillance network that derives drug intelligence from a sample of patients presenting to hospital with illicit drug‐related toxicity. This publication describes the preliminary outcomes of conducting toxicosurveillance for critically unwell festival patrons within on‐site medical facilities. Methods: Blood samples were collected from patrons who presented with severe illicit drug‐related toxicity across three festivals (2022/2023). Blood samples were analysed via liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry for over 700 pharmaceutical and illicit drugs. Results: There were 1603 individual medical encounters across the festivals, 228 of which were illicit drug related. A blood sample was collected for 24 patients, with a median age of 22 years (range 18–39 years). A median of two drugs (range 1–5 drugs) were reported and four drugs (range 0–8 drugs) were analytically confirmed per patient. The most frequently reported exposures were congruent with analytical results, 3,4‐methylenedioxymethamphetamine (reported n = 17, detected n = 20), ketamine (reported n = 9, detected n = 13) and cocaine (reported n = 9, detected n = 12). An unreported illicit drug and/or new psychoactive substance (NPS) was detected in 18 patients, including methylamphetamine (n = 10), a cathinone (n = 7), benzodiazepine‐type NPS (n = 6), N‐ethylamphetamine (n = 1), 3‐hydroxyphencyclidine (n = 1) and/or 4‐hydroxy‐N‐methyl‐N‐isopropyltryptamine (n = 1). Discussion and Conclusions: EDNAV toxicosurveillance serves as an additional tool within a multi‐faceted approach to harm reduction at festivals. Continued data collection will allow for the characterisation of high‐risk drug use patterns to provide evidence‐based messaging to festival patrons and key stakeholders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Gastroparesis can be a debilitating disease process for which durable treatment options are lacking. While dietary changes and pharmacotherapy have some efficacy, symptoms frequently recur and some patients progress to needing supplemental enteral feeding access. Per oral pyloromyotomy (POP) has been shown to be a durable minimally invasive treatment option for refractory gastroparesis with a low side effect profile, and therefore has been performed at this institution for the past 6 years. Methods: This was a retrospective case series of all patients who underwent a POP at a single institution over a 6-year period (2018–2023). Patient demographics, preoperative symptomatology and subsequent workup, postoperative complications, and symptom recurrence were collected and analyzed. Results: There were 56 patients included in the study. There was a 1.8:1 female:male ratio. The average patient age was 56 years old (range 23–85). The average duration of symptoms was 1–3 years. Thirty-eight percent of patients had undergone previous endoscopic therapy for gastroparesis (pyloric botox injection or pyloric dilation) and 16% of patients underwent multiple endoscopic therapies. Twenty-nine percent of patients were on a medication for gastroparesis. Past surgery was the most common gastroparesis etiology for POP (50% of patients). Diabetes (23%) and idiopathic (19%) were the other most common gastroparesis etiologies for POP. Nausea was the most common symptom at first follow-up (30%) but these patients continued to improve with 14% of patients continuing to endorse nausea at 6 months. Twenty-seven percent of patients developed symptom recurrence. Forty percent of patients with symptom recurrence underwent a repeat endoscopic or surgical therapy. Conclusions: In this present study, POP leads to durable results in approximately 75% of patients with minimal complications. Oropouche virus has recently caused outbreaks in South America and the Caribbean, expanding into areas to which the virus was previously not endemic. This geographic range expansion, in conjunction with the identification of vertical transmission and reports of deaths, has raised concerns about the broader threat this virus represents to the Americas. We review information on Oropouche virus, factors influencing its spread, transmission risk in the United States, and current status of public health response tools. On the basis of available data, the risk for sustained local transmission in the continental United States is considered low because of differences in vector ecology and in human-vector interactions when compared with Oropouche virus-endemic areas. However, more information is needed about the drivers for the current outbreak to clarify the risk for further expansion of this virus. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present for practitioner (manager) consideration an approach to a collaborative learning and problem-solving effort by a manager in partnership with an employee. Fundamentally, in place of manager direction and expertise applied to employee learning, the approach is grounded on manager-employee collaboration that makes use of an approach to learning to: (1) address some work-based problem or issue, (2) share typical leadership roles of goal-setting and problem solving, and (3) jointly working to improve the knowledge, skills, and personal attributes of each partner. Design/methodology/approach: The concept of reciprocal reflective approach to learning (RRAL) is created by consideration of some factors that are consolidated, ultimately, to yield an approach to change. They include shared efforts in goal-setting and related tasks, identification of knowledge and skill areas linked to the performance and growth of each of the partners, and the use of a specific learning model. Findings: The approach presented can be achieved yet requires much attention by each participant. Reciprocity means that each participant is involved in their own increases in knowledge and skills as well as aiding their partner in her/his improvements. Problem solving is also a large component of their efforts as is relationship building. Originality/value: The approach embraces how reciprocal action can go well beyond problem solving and includes manager and employee interest and attention in helping each other to learn, change, and recognize growth in personal attributes. Wind-borne dust supply of iron (Fe) to the oceans plays a crucial role in Earth's biogeochemical cycles. Iron, a limiting micronutrient for phytoplankton growth, is fundamental in regulating ocean primary productivity and in turn the global carbon cycle. The flux of bioavailable Fe to the open ocean affects oscillations in atmospheric CO2 due to its control on inorganic carbon fixation into organic matter that is eventually exported to the sediments. However, the nature of dust-delivered Fe to the ocean and controls on its bioavailability remain poorly constrained. To evaluate the supply of wind-borne bioavailable Fe and its potential impact on Fe-based climate feedbacks over the last 120,000 years, we examine sediment profiles from four localities that define a proximal to distal transect relative to Saharan dust inputs. Bulk δ56Fe isotope compositions (average = -0.05‰) and FeT/Al ratios suggest crustal values, thus pointing to a dominant dust origin for the sediments at all four sites. We observed no variability in grain size distribution or in bioavailable Fe supply at individual sites as a function of glacial-versus-interglacial deposition. Importantly, there is no correlation between sediment grain size and Fe bioavailability. Spatial trends do, however, suggest increasing Fe bioavailability with increasing distance of atmospheric transport, and our sediments also indicate the loss of this Fe and thus potential bioavailability utilization once deposited in the ocean. Our study underscores the significance of Fe dynamics in oceanic environments using refined speciation techniques to elucidate patterns in Fe reactivity. Such insights are crucial for understanding nutrient availability and productivity in various ocean regions, including the Southern Ocean, where wind-delivered Fe may play a pivotal role. It is expected that dust delivery on glacial-interglacial timescales would be more pronounced in these high-latitude regions. Metabolic disorder significantly contributes to diabetic vascular complications, including diabetic retinopathy, the leading cause of blindness in the working-age population. However, the molecular mechanisms by which disturbed metabolic homeostasis causes vascular dysfunction in diabetic retinopathy remain unclear. O-GlcNAcylation modification acts as a nutrient sensor particularly sensitive to ambient glucose. Here, we observe pronounced O-GlcNAc elevation in retina endothelial cells of diabetic retinopathy patients and mouse models. Endothelial-specific depletion or pharmacological inhibition of O-GlcNAc transferase effectively mitigates vascular dysfunction. Mechanistically, we find that Yes-associated protein (YAP) and Transcriptional co-activator with PDZ-binding motif (TAZ), key effectors of the Hippo pathway, are O-GlcNAcylated in diabetic retinopathy. We identify threonine 383 as an O-GlcNAc site on YAP, which inhibits its phosphorylation at serine 397, leading to its stabilization and activation, thereby promoting vascular dysfunction by inducing a pro-angiogenic and glucose metabolic transcriptional program. This work emphasizes the critical role of the O-GlcNAc-Hippo axis in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy and suggests its potential as a therapeutic target. Background: The International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-3) uses moderate or severe pain intensity in the diagnostic criterion for migraine. However, few studies have analyzed pain rating on a visual analog scale to identify the numerical intensity that correlates with migraine. Objective: To evaluate the impact of daily self-rated headache pain among patients with either episodic or chronic migraine. This study specifically aims to evaluate the probability of patients labeling their head pain as a headache vs. migraine based on the pain level reported. Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted on patients with a clinical diagnosis of migraine from July 1, 2014, to July 1, 2019. Results: Data of 114 subjects (57 episodic migraine and 57 chronic migraine) were used for analysis. Patients with episodic migraine on average rated a migraine more severe than a headache (4.1 vs. 6.4; p < 0.001). Patients with chronic migraine on average also rated migraine more severe than a headache (4.3 vs. 6.8; p = 0.0054). Chronic migraine patients transitioned from calling head pain a headache to a migraine significantly later than episodic migraine patients (4.5 vs. 6.8; p < 0.05). Conclusion: A migraine is perceived as having higher pain intensity than a headache in patients with both episodic and chronic migraine. COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) was one of the first therapies to receive emergency use authorization for management of COVID-19. We assessed the effectiveness of CCP in a propensity-matched analysis, and whether the presence of antibodies in the recipient at the time of treatment or the titer of antibodies in the administered CCP influenced clinical effectiveness. In an inpatient population within a single large health system, a total of 290 CCP patients were matched to 290 controls. While CCP increased titers of anti-SARS-CoV-2 RBD IgG titers post-CCP (p = <0.0001), no differences in 30-day survival were observed between CCP patients and controls in univariate and multivariate analyses. Survival at 30 days was numerically lower in recipients who were seronegative prior to CCP administration, compared to those with low titer and high titer anti-SARS-CoV-2 RBD IgG, respectively, but did not reach statistical significance (56% vs 82% vs 75%, p = 0.16). Patients who received 2 units of high-titer CCP had numerically better survival versus those who received fewer high-titer units, but this was not statistically significant (p = 0.08). CCP did not improve 30-day survival compared to propensity matched controls. Together these data support that CCP therapy provides limited benefit to hospitalized patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Infection of native tissues or implanted devices is common, but clinical diagnosis is frequently difficult and currently available noninvasive tests perform poorly. Immunocompromised individuals (for example transplant recipients, or those with cancer) are at increased risk. No imaging test in clinical use can specifically identify infection, or accurately differentiate bacterial from fungal infections. Commonly used [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose (18FDG) positron emission computed tomography (PET/CT) is sensitive for infection, but limited by poor specificity because increased glucose uptake may also indicate inflammation or malignancy. Furthermore, this tracer provides no indication of the type of infective agent (bacterial, fungal, or parasitic). Imaging tools that directly and specifically target microbial pathogens are highly desirable to improve noninvasive infection diagnosis and localization. A growing field of research is exploring the utility of radiometals and their chelators (siderophores), which are small molecules that bind radiometals and form a stable complex allowing sequestration by microbes. This radiometal-chelator complex can be directed to a specific microbial target in vivo, facilitating anatomical localization by PET or single photon emission computed tomography. Additionally, bifunctional chelators can further conjugate therapeutic molecules (e.g., peptides, antibiotics, antibodies) while still bound to desired radiometals, combining specific imaging with highly targeted antimicrobial therapy. These novel therapeutics may prove a useful complement to the armamentarium in the global fight against antimicrobial resistance. This review will highlight current state of infection imaging diagnostics and their limitations, strategies to develop infection-specific diagnostics, recent advances in radiometal-based chelators for microbial infection imaging, challenges, and future directions to improve targeted diagnostics and/or therapeutics. Tissue morphogenesis is intimately linked to the changes in shape and organisation of individual cells. In curved epithelia, cells can intercalate along their own apicobasal axes, adopting a shape named 'scutoid' that allows energy minimization in the tissue. Although several geometric and biophysical factors have been associated with this 3D reorganisation, the dynamic changes underlying scutoid formation in 3D epithelial packing remain poorly understood. Here, we use live imaging of the sea star embryo coupled with deep learningbased segmentation to dissect the relative contributions of cell density, tissue compaction and cell proliferation on epithelial architecture. We find that tissue compaction, which naturally occurs in the embryo, is necessary for the appearance of scutoids. Physical compression experiments identify cell density as the factor promoting scutoid formation at a global level. Finally, the comparison of the developing embryo with computational models indicates that the increase in the proportion of scutoids is directly associated with cell divisions. Our results suggest that apico-basal intercalations appearing immediately after mitosis may help accommodate the new cells within the tissue. Transgender high school students (those whose gender identity differs from their sex assigned at birth) experience disparate health outcomes and challenges in school, including violence and discrimination, compared with cisgender students (those whose gender identity aligns with their sex assigned at birth). Until recently, population-based data describing the experiences of transgender students and students questioning whether they are transgender (questioning) have been limited. In 2023, the national Youth Risk Behavior Survey assessed transgender identity, providing the first nationally representative data about transgender students. This report describes the demographic characteristics of transgender and questioning high school students and examines differences in the prevalence of experiences of violence, poor mental health, suicidal thoughts and behaviors, school connectedness, and unstable housing among transgender, questioning, and cisgender high school students nationwide. In 2023, 3.3% of U.S. high school students identified as transgender, and 2.2% identified as questioning. Transgender and questioning students experienced a higher prevalence of violence, poor mental health, suicidal thoughts and behaviors, and unstable housing, and a lower prevalence of school connectedness than their cisgender peers. Compared with 8.5% of cisgender male students, 25.3% of transgender students and 26.4% of questioning students skipped school because they felt unsafe. An estimated 40% of transgender and questioning students were bullied at school, and 69% of questioning students and 72% of transgender students experienced persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, a marker for experiencing depressive symptoms. Approximately 26% of transgender and questioning students attempted suicide in the past year compared with 5% of cisgender male and 11% of cisgender female students. Intervention opportunities for schools to create safer and more supportive environments for transgender and questioning students can help address these disparities. cis,cis-Muconic acid (MA) is a bio-based chemical that can be converted to direct replacement chemicals or performance-advantaged bioproducts. We recently engineered the bacterium Pseudomonas putida KT2440 for the co-utilization of glucose and xylose to produce MA. This study evaluates the effect of additional genetic modifications, media composition, and bioprocess strategy on MA titer, productivity, and yield in bioreactor cultivations. We achieve a MA titer of 47.2 g L−1, a productivity of 0.49 g L−1 h−1, and a yield of 0.50 C-mol C-mol−1 from glucose and xylose supplemented with 5% (v/v) corn steep liquor with a P. putida strain harboring the deletion of gacS. Additionally, we demonstrate efficient MA production from corn stover-derived sugars and scalability to 150 L bioreactors. Techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment predict that adipic acid, derived from catalytic hydrogenation of MA, can achieve a selling price as low as $2.60 per kg, approaching cost parity and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% relative to fossil carbon-based adipic acid. This paper explores the use of mobile technologies in facilitating offline encounters, through a post-digital lens which posits the digital not as new or disruptive but as a ubiquitous and accepted part of everyday social connectivities. In the paper, we explore ways in which migrants draw on jointly assembled semiotic repertoires, affordances, and constraints of the digital space, as well as cultural knowledge and spatial relating, to establish common ground and an interpretative framework for engaging in ensuing offline encounters. Drawing on an interactional analysis of data from a large linguistic ethnographic project, we focus on how a group of Polish immigrants who live in different parts of London bring their offline contexts and socially or culturally motivated expectations into their interactions to facilitate alignment in interactional frames in the context of limited familiarity with each other. Overall, our analysis points to the role of group messaging in creating a digital prospection space in which a joint frame of reference can be interactively constructed in anticipation of an offline encounter. Mortality surveillance systems can have limitations, including reporting delays, incomplete reporting, missing data, and insufficient detail on important risk or sociodemographic factors that can impact the accuracy of estimates of current trends, disease severity, and related disparities across subpopulations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention used multiple data systems during the COVID-19 emergency response—line-level case‒death surveillance, aggregate death surveillance, and the National Vital Statistics System—to collectively provide more comprehensive and timely information on COVID-19‒associated mortality necessary for informed decisions. This article will review in detail the line-level, aggregate, and National Vital Statistics System surveillance systems and the purpose and use of each. Objectives: The presence of a mechanical aortic valve has been a contraindication to the use of an arch branch aortic endograft due to the risk of damaging the valve, resulting in acute aortic regurgitation, or a trapped endograft. Methods: We present a 67-year-old woman, with a background of Marfan's syndrome and a previous Bentall's procedure, who presented with a symptomatic enlarging aortic arch and descending thoracic aortic aneurysm, with a type 1A endoleak. Results: Using an inner branch arch endograft (Cook Medical, Bloomington, Indiana), the nose cone of the delivery system was passed laterally through the semi-circular aperture of the mechanical aortic valve to facilitate deployment just distal to the coronary buttons. Americans systematically underestimate the popularity of climate policy. Researchers have speculated that correcting second-order misperceptions, or beliefs about what others believe, could translate into even broader support as action comes to be seen as more politically feasible. Using a two-wave experiment (N ≈1,600), we examine the effects of communicating the degree of policy support among Democrats, Republicans, or all Americans (i.e., norms). Republican and American norms increase perceived policy support from the relevant group; exposure to the Republican norm also increases policy support, and this effect is concentrated mostly among fellow Republicans. Maintaining hydrological connectivity is important for sustaining freshwater fish populations as the high habitat connectivity supports large-scale fish movements, enabling individuals to express their natural behaviours and spatial ecology. Northern pike Esox lucius is a freshwater apex predator that requires access to a wide range of functional habitats across its lifecycle, including spatially discrete foraging and spawning areas. Here, pike movement ecology was assessed using acoustic telemetry and stable isotope analysis in the River Bure wetland system, eastern England, comprising of the Bure mainstem, the River Ant and Thurne tributaries, plus laterally connected lentic habitats, and a system of dykes and ditches. Of 44 tagged pike, 30 were tracked for over 100 days, with the majority of detections being in the laterally connected lentic habitats and dykes and ditches, but with similar numbers of pike detected across all macrohabitats. The movement metrics of these pike indicated high individual variability, with total ranges to over 26 km, total movements to over 1182 km and mean daily movements to over 2.9 km. Pike in the Thurne tributary were more vagile than those in the Ant and Bure, and with larger Thurne pike also having relatively high proportions of large-bodied and highly vagile common bream Abramis brama in their diet, suggesting the pike movements were potentially related to bream movements. These results indicate the high individual variability in pike movements, which was facilitated here by their access to a wide range of connected macrohabitats due to high hydrological connectivity. This paper introduces a versatile and adaptable framework that exploits Computer Vision and the Robot Operating System (ROS) to facilitate pick-and-place operations within robotic cells, offering a comprehensive solution for handling and sorting random-flow objects on conveyor belts. Designed to be easily configured and reconfigured, it accommodates ROS-compatible robotic arms and 3D vision systems, ensuring adaptability to different technological requirements and reducing deployment costs. Experimental results demonstrate the framework's high precision and accuracy in manipulating and sorting tested objects. In the ocean, the performance of active sonar systems depends on the acoustic properties of the seafloor. Daily to monthly variations in near-bottom hydrodynamics and benthic biological activity may affect seafloor properties which then influence the acoustic response of the seafloor. The dependence of seafloor scatter on evolving environmental parameters was investigated using high-frequency active acoustic systems. Seafloor scattering measurements were analyzed in a series of experiments (two weeks to five months in duration) from downward-looking sonars oriented at 20° grazing angle with respect to the seafloor. Data were obtained in two shallow water locations near Portsmouth, New Hampshire, USA: a wave-dominated site and a site dominated by tidal currents. The bottom type for both sites was gravelly sand. The experimental set-up consisted of a tripod placed on the seafloor equipped with three transducers operating at 38, 70, and 200 kHz, a wave-sensing CTD, and underwater cameras. Scattering strength time series were obtained taking into account the local seafloor slope. Results show that there is variability in scattering strength (both in mean levels and distributions). Large variations often coincided with storm events, suggesting that this variability may be driven by changes in bottom roughness caused by storm-related hydrodynamics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
