We investigated the capacitance of a forward-biased silicon pn diode using impedance spectroscopy. Despite extensive research spanning decades, no single model in the literature adequately describes the impedance behavior for bias up to the built-in voltage. By employing the 1N4007 diode as a case study, we analyzed the impedance over a wide frequency range, from 1 Hz to 1 MHz. Our analysis reveals that impedance can be effectively studied by combining two models. In both models, the depletion capacitance is assumed to be an ideal capacitor with a value independent of frequency. One model accounts for diffusion processes, while the other addresses interfacial effects, as well as potential and capacitance distributions across the junction. This approach offers valuable insights into the complex capacitance behavior of pn junctions as a function of the bias voltage. Issues of diversity and inclusion increasingly influence the purchasing process and brand loyalty of new generations of customers. Additionally, scholars and policymakers are calling for a more inclusive society and advocating for the integration of people with disabilities. However, there is a lack of research investigating these issues from a marketing perspective. Using a strategy of inquiry regarding in-depth multiple case studies from different players of the toy industry, this paper highlights how to set marketing strategies that develop and communicate new offerings by promoting both Marketing and Social Value and fostering the social inclusion of children with a disability. Introduction: The PI3K pathway is crucial in breast cancer (BC), influencing cell survival, growth, and metabolism, with AKT playing a central role in treatment resistance. This pathway's involvement in breast carcinogenesis and its link to treatment resistance underscores the significance of targeting it in BC therapy. PI3K-pathway inhibitors offer new therapeutic avenues but bring challenges, especially due to toxicity issues that hinder their development. Areas covered: This review discusses the PI3K-pathway inhibitors used in BC, highlighting emerging, innovative strategies. Expert opinion: The introduction of mTOR inhibitors marked a key step in tackling hormone receptor-positive (HR+) BC, targeting endocrine resistance. However, toxicity concerns remain, especially with PIK3CA and AKT inhibitors. Selective PI3K-targeted agents aim to reduce off-target toxicity, enhancing patient adherence and control over the disease. New compounds employing allosteric mechanisms may further limit adverse effects and allow safer combination therapies, previously limited by toxicity. Advancements in dosing strategies focus on patient-centered outcomes, and synergistic agents are essential in advancing AKT-pathway inhibition, paving the way for a new phase in HR+ BC treatment. Background: Peri-electrode edema after deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery for Parkinson Disease (PD) has been reported in up to 100% of cases. The clinical significance of this finding is unclear, with most papers suggesting a benign course. The risk factors are also poorly defined. We aimed at defining the incidence rate, the clinical significance and the predictive factors of peri-electrode edema in patients undergoing DBS for PD. Methods: We reviewed data of 119 patients treated with frameless stereotactic DBS for PD between 2012 and 2022 at our Institution. A mixed-technique targeting was adopted. Awake surgery was used in 64.7% cases; in most cases, microelectrode recording (MER) was adopted. The target was the subthalamic nucleus (STN) in 91.2% cases. Results: Ninety patients were included. Postoperative edema related to lead placement was noticed in 40% patients after a median time of 2 days since surgery; in 88.9% of these cases, it was limited to subcortical white matter. Symptomatic edema was registered only in one case (1.1%), confirming previous reports on the benign clinical course. The only independent predictive factor for edema onset was asleep surgery (p = 0.0451). Notably, the use of directional electrodes was not associated with an increased risk of edema at multivariable analysis. Clinical parameters including age, and timing of CT scanning, did not affect edema onset. Conclusions: We confirmed the very low rate of symptomatic edema in DBS for PD. This study explores the potential of glass polishing waste (GPW) in improving clayey soil from the Guabirotuba formation. The research stands out by developing a novel geomaterial and proposing equations to predict mechanical behavior, focusing on the effects of porosity (η), GPW content, and cement on unconfined compressive strength (qu), splitting tensile strength (qt), and durability through accumulated loss of mass (ALM). This research contributes to understanding the parameters that influence the mechanical strength and durability of soil–cement, and soil–cement-GPW blends through the adequacy of the porosity/cement content (η/Civ) and porosity/binder content (η/Biv) indices on qu, qt, and ALM. Soil–cement-GPW blends and a control group (soil–cement) were analyzed, and the microstructure of the best blends was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the soil–cement-GPW blends exhibited superior mechanical strengths compared to the soil–cement blends, reaching a maximum value of qu = 3176 kPa and qt = 946 kPa after 90 days in the soil + 8%cement + 15%GPW blends compacted at the modified effort. Soil–cement specimens showed higher ALM (soil + 8%cement; ALM = 8.1%) than the blends with GPW (soil + 8%cement + 15%GPW; ALM = 2.5%). The qu of specimens in durability tests decreased by 15% to 49.5% compared to those in qu tests after 28 days of curing, with the highest losses in blends with lower cement content and no GPW. The results of qu, qt, and ALM were successfully correlated with the η/Civ and η/Biv indices in power-type relationships. The Epoch of Reionization (EoR) is a key period of cosmological history in which the intergalactic medium (IGM) underwent a major phase change from being neutral to almost completely ionized. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are luminous and unique probes of their environments that can be used to study the timeline for the progression of the EoR. Here, we present a detailed analysis of the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope X-shooter spectrum of GRB 210905A, which resides at a redshift of |$z\sim 6.3$|⁠. We focus on estimating the fraction of neutral hydrogen, |$x_{\rm H \, {\small I}}$|⁠ , on the line of sight to the host galaxy of GRB 210905A by fitting the shape of the Lyman- |$\alpha$| damping wing of the afterglow spectrum. The X-shooter spectrum has a high signal-to-noise ratio, but the complex velocity structure of the host galaxy limits the precision of our conclusions. The statistically preferred model suggests a low neutral fraction with a 3 |$\sigma$| upper limit of |$x_{\rm H \, {\small I}} \lesssim 0.15$| or |$x_{\rm H \, {\small I}} \lesssim 0.23$|⁠ , depending on the absence or presence of an ionized bubble around the GRB host galaxy, indicating that the IGM around the GRB host galaxy is mostly ionized. A key challenge in the art and archaeological field is the instrumental analysis of objects and materials while preserving their integrity. In this study, the world-renowned artwork Alexander Mosaic (The Issus Battle, collection of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, IT), the most iconic representation of the face of the Macedonian king Alexander the Great coming from a Pompeii domus, was thoroughly analyzed with mobile and non-invasive methods, within a great project of restoration started in 2020. Representative areas of the Mosaic, overall consisting of ca. two million of tesserae, was studied by in situ videomicroscopy, infrared thermography (IRT), multispectral imaging, portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy. Ten tesserae colors were discriminated, and hypotheses on their geological provenances are proposed. Plasters, mineral components and other substances of old protective materials were characterized. BPV1, BPV2, BPV13, and BPV14 are all genotypes of bovine delta papillomaviruses (δPV), of which the first three cause infections in horses and are associated with equine sarcoids. However, BPV14 infection has never been reported in equine species. In this study, we examined 58 fresh and thawed commercial semen samples from healthy stallions. In 34 (58.6%), bovine δPV DNA was detected and quantified using droplet digital polymerase chain reaction (ddPCR). Real time quantitative PCR (qPCR) was able to identify bovine δPV DNA in 5 samples (8.6%). Of the BPV-infected semen samples, 15 were positive for BPV2 (~ 44.1%) on ddPCR and 4 (~ 11.7%) on qPCR; 12 (~ 35.3%) for BPV14 on ddPCR and 1 (~ 3%) by qPCR; 4 (~ 11.7%) for BPV1 on ddPCR, whereas qPCR failed to reveal this infection; 3 (~ 8.8%) for BPV13 on ddPCR; and BPV13 infection was not detected by qPCR. Our study showed for the first time that BPV14 is an additional infectious agent potentially responsible for infection in horses, as its transcripts were detected and quantified in some semen samples. Large-scale BPV14 screening is necessary to provide substantial data on the molecular epidemiology for a better understanding of the geographical divergence of BPV14 prevalence in different areas and how widespread BPV14 is among equids. In this work, we introduce the class of self starting general linear methods that are multi-stage multi-step methods, which do not require any additional starting and finishing procedures. We provide sufficient conditions to derive methods with Runge-Kutta stability and show how some properties of diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta methods can be improved, keeping similar computational costs. Antibody–drug conjugates (ADCs) have emerged as a transformative approach in cancer therapy by enhancing tumor targeting and minimizing systemic toxicity compared to traditional chemotherapy. Initially developed with chemotherapy agents as payloads, ADCs have now incorporated alternative payloads, such as immune-stimulating agents, natural toxins, and radionuclides, to improve therapeutic efficacy and specificity. A significant advancement in ADC technology is the integration of Proteolysis Targeting Chimeras (PROTACs), which enable the precise degradation of cellular targets involved in tumorigenesis. This strategy enhances the specificity and precision of cancer therapies, addressing key mechanisms in cancer cell survival. Moreover, incorporating radioactive isotopes into ADCs is an emerging strategy aimed at further improving therapeutic outcomes. By delivering localized radiation, this approach offers the potential to enhance the efficacy of treatment and expand the therapeutic arsenal. Despite these innovations, challenges remain, including dysregulated immune activation, severe adverse effects, and intrinsic immunogenicity of some agents. These emerging issues highlight the ongoing need for optimization in ADC therapy. This review summarizes the latest developments in ADC technology, focusing on novel payloads, PROTAC integration, and the potential for combining ADCs with other therapeutic modalities to refine cancer treatment and improve patient outcomes. Isotopes at the limits of nuclear existence are of great interest for their critical role in nuclear astrophysical reactions and their exotic structure. Experimentally, exotic nuclides are challenging to address due to their low production cross-sections, overwhelming amounts of contamination, and lifetimes of typically less than a second. To this end, a Multiple-Reflection Time-of-Flight mass spectrometer at the TITAN-TRIUMF facility was built to determine atomic masses. This device is the preferred tool to work with exotic nuclides due to its ability to resolve the species of interest from contamination and short measurement cycle times, enabling mass measurements of isotopes with millisecond half-lives. With a relative precision of the order 10−7, we demonstrate why the TITAN MR-TOF MS is the tool of choice for precision mass surveys for nuclear structure and astrophysics. The capabilities of the device are showcased in this work, including new mass measurements of short-lived tin isotopes (104–107Sn) approaching the proton dripline as well as 89Zr, 90Y, and 91Y. Background: The number of telemetry studies focused on lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) in the Laurentian Great Lakes has steadily increased over the last decade, but field tests of immobilization methods used for tag implantation, which have the potential to affect survival and behavior of fish after release, are lacking. We compared post-tagging survival and behavior of lake whitefish that were immobilized for tag implantation using electroimmobilization via a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) unit or by chemical immobilization via exposure to 10% eugenol. Results: Acoustic tags were implanted into 126 adult lake whitefish (N = 126; N = 67 TENS treatment group, N = 59 eugenol treatment group) collected from the Fox River, Wisconsin, during the spawning period in November 2021. We found no significant differences between treatments in the number of days that lake whitefish spent in the Fox River following tagging (TENS mean = 13.4 days, eugenol mean = 14.7), and also found that the proportions of fish within each treatment group that returned to the Fox River during fall 2022 (51% from TENS treatment group, 49% from eugenol treatment group) did not differ from the proportions for all fish that were confirmed to be alive at that time. The best Cormack–Jolly–Seber model indicated no differences in survival between the two treatment groups (monthly survival = 0.980, 95% CI 0.970–0.987). Fish immobilized using TENS underwent almost immediate induction and recovery from surgeries, while fish immobilized using eugenol had induction times that ranged 167–487 s (mean = 347 s) and recovery times that ranged 51–2358 s (mean = 1242 s). Conclusions: Short- and long-term behavior (time to exit of Fox River, return to Fox River in the next spawning season) and monthly survival estimates of lake whitefish did not differ between the immobilization treatments. Either method may be suitable for immobilization during tag implantation, but the additional time needed for induction and recovery of fish when using eugenol may be a limiting factor in some field-based tagging situations. We present a comprehensive analysis of the photometric and spectroscopic evolution of SN 2021foa, unique among the class of transitional supernovae for repeatedly changing its spectroscopic appearance from hydrogen-to-helium-to-hydrogen dominated (IIn-to-Ibn-to-IIn) within 50 days past peak brightness. The spectra exhibit multiple narrow (≈300–600 km s−1) absorption lines of hydrogen, helium, calcium, and iron together with broad helium emission lines with a full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of ∼6000 km s−1. For a steady, wind mass-loss regime, light-curve modeling results in an ejecta mass of ∼8 M ⊙ and circumstellar material (CSM) mass below 1 M ⊙, and an ejecta velocity consistent with the FWHM of the broad helium lines. We obtain a mass-loss rate of ≈2 M ⊙ yr−1. This mass-loss rate is 3 orders of magnitude larger than derived for normal Type II supernovae. We estimate that the bulk of the CSM of SN 2021foa must have been expelled within half a year, about 12 yr ago. Our analysis suggests that SN 2021foa had a helium-rich ejecta that swept up a dense shell of hydrogen-rich CSM shortly after explosion. At about 60 days past peak brightness, the photosphere recedes through the dense ejecta-CSM region, occulting much of the redshifted emission of the hydrogen and helium lines, which results in an observed blueshift (∼−3000 km s−1). Strong mass-loss activity prior to explosion, such as those seen in SN 2009ip-like objects and SN 2021foa as precursor emission, are the likely origin of a complex, multiple-shell CSM close to the progenitor star. Background/Objectives: Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) has emerged as a possible first-step treatment to avoid invasive intubation in pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) due to its advantages in reducing intubation-associated risks. However, the timely identification of NIV failure is crucial to prevent adverse outcomes. This study aims to identify predictors of first-attempt NIV failure in PICU patients by testing various machine learning techniques and comparing their predictive abilities. Methods: Data were sourced from the TIPNet registry, which comprised patients admitted to 23 Italian Paediatric Intensive Care Units (PICUs). We selected patients between January 2010 and January 2024 who received non-invasive ventilation (NIV) as their initial approach to respiratory support. The study aimed to develop a predictive model for NIV failure, selecting the best Machine Learning technique, including Generalized Linear Models, Random Forest, Extreme Gradient Boosting, and Neural Networks. Additionally, an ensemble approach was implemented. Model performances were measured using sensitivity, specificity, AUROC, and predictive values. Moreover, the model calibration was evaluated. Results: Out of 43,794 records, 1861 admissions met the inclusion criteria, with 678 complete cases and 97 NIV failures. The RF model demonstrated the highest AUROC and sensitivity equal to 0.83 (0.64, 0.94). Base excess, weight, age, systolic blood pressure, and fraction of inspired oxygen were identified as the most predictive features. A check for model calibration ensured the model's reliability in predicting NIV failure probabilities. This paper explores how connectivity to place has brought life to contemporary environmental struggles in what is now known as New York State. Layers of memory, colonization, and stewardship are embedded within a community's relationship with their environment. By focusing on two case studies, the authors will illustrate how this relationship shaped successful place‐based resistance. Throughout our work, we offer the alternative methodology of ecocentric storytelling and artistic representation to elevate the voice of both ecosystems and all their inhabitants. Both case studies are centered on environmental/social movements that foreground the inherent personhood of the natural world. The first will focus on the Ashokan Reservoir, in the Catskill Mountains, on land guarded by the Lenape. It is a location that has suffered multiple waves of colonization and successfully resisted a large damming operation. The second case study will be centered on the Upper St. Lawrence River/Kaniatarowanénhne Watershed, Haudenosaunee Territory, where rural communities are uniting to grant Rights to the Rivers that bring life to their communities. Both cases exemplify the story of communities that defended their livelihoods and environments by uniting with their most reliable allies, the Water, and all their more‐than‐human guardians. Although edible flowers have been historically principally used due to their visual appeal and smell, the world is discovering their value as innovative and natural sources of bioactive compounds. Cucurbita pepo L. (CpL), a plant from the Cucurbitaceae family, is widely cultivated for its edible fruits and flowers, which are rich in polyphenols and carotenoids—compounds known for their potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Despite their potential, the use of CpL flowers for skin-related applications remains underexplored. This study aimed to comprehensively analyze CpL flower extract (CpLfe), focusing on its polyphenolic and carotenoid content using, for the first time, advanced UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS and HPLC-DAD analysis. CpLfe highlighted remarkable antioxidant activity according to the DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP tests. CpLfe showed significantly reduced intracellular ROS in HaCaT (23%, p < 0.05) and protected against UVB-induced damage by lowering MMP-1 expression. CpLfe also upregulated genes crucial for skin hydration (AQP3) and barrier function (CerS2, CerS4, and CerS6). A placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial further validated CpLfe efficacy, demonstrating marked improvements in moisture retention, wrinkle reduction, and collagen production in women aged 35–55. These findings suggested that CpL flowers could be a source of bioactive compounds recovered from edible flowers able to improve the major skin aging and photoaging features. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study analysed the resilient behaviour of silty soils from the southern region of Brazil stabilised with cement and recycled aggregate (RA) from construction and demolition waste, with a maximum diameter of 4.8 mm. Its suitability for use in urban pavement layers has also been assessed. Cyclic triaxial tests were conducted on pure soil, soil-cement, and soil-cement-RA specimens under three compaction efforts: standard, intermediate, and modified. Based on the results of the cyclic triaxial tests, resilience modulus (MR) prediction models were calibrated. Subsequently, using the AEMC software, the useful life of an urban pavement was evaluated, considering the materials tested as base layers and subbase. The results indicate that incorporating cement and RA proved effective in stabilising the soil, significantly improving the resilient modulus compared to pure soil. When compacted at the modified energy and subjected to the highest stress levels, the soil-cement-RA mixture presented MR of 638 MPa, an increase of 50% compared with the soil-cement mixture, with MR of 426 MPa. The mechanistic analysis demonstrated that soil-cement and soil-cement-RA mixtures are suitable for use in base layers and subbase of urban pavements, with the soil-cement-RA mixture presenting better performance as a base material. High-resolution absorption spectroscopy toward bright background sources has had a paramount role in understanding early galaxy formation, the evolution of the intergalactic medium and the reionisation of the Universe. However, these studies are now approaching the boundaries of what can be achieved at ground-based 8-10m class telescopes. The identification of primeval systems at the highest redshifts, within the reionisation epoch and even into the dark ages, and of the products of the first generation of stars and the chemical enrichment of the early Universe, requires observing very faint targets with a signal-to-noise ratio high enough to detect very weak spectral signatures. In this paper, we describe the giant leap forward that will be enabled by ANDES, the high-resolution spectrograph for the ELT, in these key science fields, together with a brief, non-exhaustive overview of other extragalactic research topics that will be pursued by this instrument, and its synergistic use with other facilities that will become available in the early 2030s. We present a method, based on the classical Green-Kubo theory of linear response, to compute the heat conductivity of extended systems, leveraging energy-density, rather than energy-current, fluctuations, thus avoiding the need to devise an analytical expression for the macroscopic energy flux. The implementation of this method requires the evaluation of the long-wavelength and low-frequency limits of a suitably defined correlation function, which we perform using a combination of recently-introduced cepstral-analysis and Bayesian extrapolation techniques. Our methodology is demonstrated against standard current-based Green-Kubo results for liquid argon and water, and solid amorphous Silica, and compared with a recently proposed similar technique, which utilizes mass-density, instead of energy-density, fluctuations. Introduction: the COVID-19 pandemic has brought to light the intricate interplay between viral infections and preexisting health conditions. In the field of kidney diseases, patients with Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) and Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) face unique challenges when exposed to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This study aims to evaluate whether SARS-CoV-2 virus infection impacts renal function differently in patients suffering from ADPKD and CKD when compared to patients suffering only from CKD. Materials and methods: clinical data from 103 patients were collected and retrospectively analyzed. We compared the renal function of ADPKD and CKD patients at two distinct time points: before COVID-19 infection (T0) and 1 year after the infection (T1). We studied also a subpopulation of 37 patients with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) < 60 mL/min and affected by ADPKD and CKD. Results: clinical data were obtained from 59 (57.3%) ADPKD patients and 44 (42.7%) CKD patients. At T1, ADPKD patients had significantly higher serum creatinine levels compared to CKD patients, and a significantly lower eGFR was observed only in ADPKD patients with eGFR < 60 mL/min compared to CKD patients (p < 0.01, p < 0.05; respectively). Following COVID-19 infection, ADPKD–CKD patients exhibited significantly higher variation in both median serum creatinine (p < 0.001) and median eGFR (p < 0.001) compared to CKD patients. Conclusion: the interplay between COVID-19 and kidney disease is complex. In CKD patients, the relationship between COVID-19 and kidney disease progression is more established, while limited studies exist on the specific impact of COVID-19 on ADPKD patients. Current evidence does not suggest that ADPKD patients are at a higher risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection; however, in our study we showed a significant worsening of the renal function among ADPKD patients, particularly those with an eGFR < 60 mL/min, in comparison to patients with only CKD after a one-year follow-up from COVID-19 infection. Modified Patankar schemes are linearly implicit time integration methods designed to be unconditionally positive and conservative. In the present work we extend the Patankar-type approach to linear multistep methods and prove that the resulting discretizations retain, with no restrictions on the step size, the positivity of the solution and the linear invariant of the continuous-time system. In bioarchaeology, funerary taphonomy and preservation become part of the biocultural narrative of the dead. We evaluate the role of these factors in reconstructing the identities of those buried in an emerging deathway, the ventrally placed legs flexed (VPLF) burial position, during the Terminal Classic (750–900/1000 CE) period at the Maya polity of Lower Dover in western Belize. The term “VPLF” describes a divergent burial practice which may have resulted from intentional binding prior to burial. In our analysis of VPLF burials (n = 12), we use a two-step process to reconstruct the social identities and potential meaning of the burial pattern: (1) interpretation of the archaeological context based on excavation observations and biogeochemistry and (2) osteological analysis of curated individuals to reconstruct their biological profiles and post-mortem/post-excavation histories. Osteological analyses included age and sex estimation, paleopathological assessment of frailty and trauma, and skeletal modifications from cultural and taphonomic forces. Radiocarbon dating and ceramic analyses were used to date the burials. Stable and radiogenic isotopic analyses were applied to reconstruct diet and mobility for a subset of the VPLF burials. Our results show that individuals were buried in the VPLF position irrespective of age, sex, or social status, consistent with patterns at other Terminal Classic and Postclassic Maya sites, although VPLF interment may have been practiced earlier at Lower Dover. Background: The first post-COVID-19 pandemic year demonstrated an unusual bronchiolitis epidemic in both hemispheres and has been attributed to the removal of barriers implemented during SARS-CoV-2 infection. Several countries reported an increase in respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) bronchiolitis, with more hospitalizations and a greater need for respiratory support. We aimed to evaluate the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on the epidemiology and management of severe bronchiolitis in pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) in Italy. Methods: Multicenter, retrospective, cohort database analysis. All children younger than 24 months admitted to 7 PICUs from October 2017 to April 2023 diagnosed with bronchiolitis were included. We compared patients from pre-COVID and post-COVID eras, excluding patients from the 2020–2021 season due to low numbers. Logistic regression models were used to assess the impact of the pre-/post-COVID period on the need for invasive ventilation. Results: Seven hundred fifteen patients were admitted to PICU during the study period, 451 patients pre-COVID and 251 patients post-COVID. Patients in the post-COVID group were older, had more comorbidities, and had higher Pediatric Index of Mortality scores at admission but the need for respiratory support was not significantly different. There was high variability in bronchiolitis management across centers. Presenting pre-COVID was protective against the risk of mechanical ventilation, adjusted for age and disease severity at admission (OR 0.38, 95% CI 0.16–0.89), while RSV infection increased the risk of intubation (OR 2.49, 95% CI 1.1–5.63). Conclusions: PICUs have faced an unexpected peak of significantly more severe cases of bronchiolitis after the COVID-19 pandemic, which did not require increased respiratory support. Introduction: We report the analysis and characterization and the preliminary biological evaluation, of both liquid and solid wastes obtained from the processing of wheat (Triticum vulgare) to produce the most iconic phytostimulin-based pharmaceutical products. The study aims to verify whether the waste can be reused in another process and not destined to its simple destructive disposal. Methods: In this perspective, we first carried out an in-depth chemical-physical analysis of the waste together with a biocompatibility evaluation to plan the feasible final choice of waste destination. The liquid and solid waste derived from the processing of wheat extract were analyzed and characterized through ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution Orbitrap mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS). Results: Results highlight that ferulic acid represent the most abundant phenolic compound for solid waste with a content of 89.782 mg/kg and dihydroferulic acid is the predominant for liquid waste (6.24 mg/L). These concentrations represent 55.87% and 84.39% of the total concentration of bioactive compounds for liquid and solid waste, respectively. The antioxidant activity registered for the solid extract was 8.598 and 7.262 mmol trolox/kg, respectively for ABTS and FRAP assays. The total phenolic content (TPC) in the liquid extract undergoes a significant percentage reduction compared to the solid waste. As regards toxicity, both liquid and solid wastes were investigated in vitro preclinical models of human skin (HaCaT cells and HDFa) after 24, 48, and 72 h of exposure. No cytotoxic effect was noted even at the highest tested concentration (100 μg/mL) at 72 h. Discussion: Overall, considering its chemo-physical features and active ingredients, we believe that this waste is highly reusable as a starting material for the development of cosmeceutical products. Thus, this study allows us to motivate the destination of the waste of the production in a recyclable raw material for additional industrial processes, thereby promoting an eco-friendly circular economy operation. Background: Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) represent a deep revolution of the therapeutic approach to heart failure (HF), preventing its insurgence but also improving the management of the disease and slowing its natural progression. To date, few studies have explored the effectiveness of SGLT2i and, in particular, Dapagliflozin in a real-world population. Therefore, in this observational prospective study, we evaluated Dapagliflozin's effectiveness in a real-world HF population categorized in the different hemodynamic profiles. Methods: From January 2022 to June 2023, we enrolled 240 patients with chronic HF and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) on optimal medical therapy, according to 2021 ESC guidelines, that added treatment with Dapagliflozin from the HF Clinics of 6 Italian University Hospitals. Clinical, biochemical, and echocardiographic parameters were collected before and after 6 months of Dapagliflozin introduction. Moreover, the HFrEF population was classified according to hemodynamic profiles (A: SV ≥ 35 ml/m2; E/e′ < 15; B: SV ≥ 35 ml/m2; E/e′ ≥ 15; C: SV < 35 ml/m2; E/e′ < 15; D: SV < 35 ml/m2; E/e′ ≥ 15). Then, we compared the Dapagliflozin population with two retrospective HF cohorts, hereinafter referred to as Guide Line 2012 (GL 2012) group and Guide Line 2016 (GL 2016) group, in accordance with the HF ESC guidelines in force at the time of patients enrolment. Precisely, we evaluated the changes to baseline in clinical, functional, biochemical, and echocardiographic parameters and compared them to the GL 2012 and GL 2016 groups. Results: Dapagliflozin population (67.18 ± 11.11 years) showed a significant improvement in the echocardiographic and functional parameters (left ventricular ejection fraction [LVEF], LV end-diastolic volume [LVEDV], LVEDV index, stroke volume index [SVi], left atrium volume index [LAVi], filling pressure [E/e′ ratio], tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion [TAPSE], tricuspid annular S′ velocity [RVs'], fractional area change [FAC], inferior vena cava [IVC diameter], pulmonary artery systolic pressure [sPAP], NYHA class, and quality of life) compared to baseline. In particular, TAPSE and right ventricle diameter (RVD1) ameliorate in congestive profiles (B and D); accordingly, the furosemide dose significantly decreased in these profiles. Comparing the three populations, the analysis of echocardiographic parameters (baseline vs follow-up) highlighted a significant decrease of sPAP in the Dapagliflozin population (p < 0.05), while no changes were recorded in the GL 2012 and GL 2016 population. Moreover, at the baseline evaluation, the GL 2012 and 2016 groups needed a higher significant dose of furosemide compared to Dapagliflozin group. Finally, Dapagliflozin patients had significantly fewer rehospitalizations (1.25%) compared with the other two groups (GL 2012 18.89%, p 0.0097; GL 2016 15.32%, p 0.0497). Conclusions: We demonstrate that Dapagliflozin is rapidly effective in an HFrEF real-world population; furthermore, the more significant effect is recorded in HFrEF patients with a congestive profile (B and D), supporting the introduction of Dapagliflozin in patients with a congestive profile and a worse prognosis. The distinctive characteristics of water, evident in its thermodynamic anomalies, have implications across disciplines from biology to geophysics. Considered a valid hypothesis to rationalize its unique properties, a liquid--liquid phase transition in water below the freezing point, in the so-called supercooled regime, has nowadays been observed in several molecular dynamics simulations and is being actively researched experimentally. The hypothesis of ferroelectric phase transition in supercooled water can be traced back to 1977, due to Stillinger. In this work, we highlight intriguing and far-reaching implications of water: The ferroelectric and liquid--liquid phase transitions can be designed as two facets of the same underlying phenomenon. Our results are based on the analysis of extensive molecular dynamics simulations and are explained in the context of a classical density functional theory in mean-field approximation valid for a polar liquid, where dipolar interaction is treated perturbatively. The theory underpins the potential role of ferroelectricity in promoting the liquid--liquid phase transition, being the density-polarization coupling inherent in the dipolar interaction potential. The existence of ferroelectric order in supercooled low-density liquid water is confirmed by the observation in molecular dynamics simulations of collective modes in space-time polarization correlation functions, traceable to spontaneous breaking of continuous rotational symmetry. In this study, we present the first characterisation of the polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) paints of commercial Spanish brand La Pajarita preserved in the studios of Joan Miró (1893–1983) in Mallorca, Spain. Investigation of several black and white paint samples using complementary analytical techniques (XRD, SEM–EDX, FTIR, and Py–GC–MS) allowed for the identification of pigments and binding media in studio materials, as well as in three artworks dating from the 1970s. Through comparative analysis, it was possible to find significant similarities between the composition of La Pajarita paints conserved in cans in the artist's studio with black and white painted layers from three artworks by Miró. Miró's use of La Pajarita paints is extensively documented in studio notes, photographs, and videos, and these paints are known to have been used by other significant Spanish artists. However, their composition has remained largely undiscovered until now. This research contributes to the knowledge of PVAc paints, providing evidence of their use by Joan Miró. The analytical results serve as a valuable reference for comparing and identifying these synthetic paints in other artworks, as well as aiding in attribution or dating studies. Glioma associated macrophages/microglia (GAMs) play an important role in glioblastoma (GBM) progression, due to their massive recruitment to the tumor site and polarization to a tumor promoting phenotype. GAMs secrete a variety of cytokines, which facilitate tumor cell growth and invasion, and prevent other immune cells from mounting an immune response against the tumor. Here, we demonstrate that zinc finger and BTB containing domain 18 (ZBTB18), a transcriptional repressor with tumor suppressive function in glioblastoma, impairs the production of key cytokines, which function as chemoattractant for GAMs. Consistently, we observe a reduced migration of GAMs when ZBTB18 is expressed by glioblastoma cells, both in cell culture and in vivo experiments. Moreover, RNA sequencing analysis shows that the presence of ZBTB18 in glioblastoma cells alters the commitment of conditioned microglia, suggesting the loss of the immune-suppressive phenotype and the acquisition of pro-inflammatory features. Thus, therapeutic approaches to increase ZBTB18 expression in GBM cells could represent an effective adjuvant to immune therapy in GBM. Introduction: Delay in arterial hypertension (AH) diagnosis and late therapy initiation may affect progression towards hypertensive-mediated organ damage (HMOD) and blood pressure (BP) control. Aim: We aimed to assess the impact of time-to-therapy on BP control and HMOD in patients receiving AH diagnosis. Methods: We analysed data from the Campania Salute Network, a prospective registry of hypertensive patients (NCT02211365). At baseline visit, time-to-therapy was defined as the interval between the first occurrence of BP values exceeding guidelines-directed thresholds and therapy initiation; HMOD included left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), carotid plaque, or chronic kidney disease. Optimal BP control was considered for average values < 140/90 mmHg. Low-risk profile was defined as grade I AH without additional cardiovascular risk factors. Results: From 14,161 hypertensive patients, we selected 1,627 participants who were not on antihypertensive therapy. This population was divided into two groups based on the median time-to-therapy (≤ 2 years n = 1,009, > 2 years n = 618). Patients with a time-to-therapy > 2 years had higher risk of HMOD (adjusted odds ratio, aOR:1.51, 95%, CI:1.19–1.93, p < 0.001) due to increased risks of LVH (aOR:1.43, CI:1.12–1.82, p = 0.004), carotid plaques (aOR:1.29, CI:1.00-1.65, p = 0.047), and chronic kidney disease (aOR:1.68, CI:1.08–2.62, p = 0.022). Time-to-therapy > 2 years was significantly associated with uncontrolled BP values (aOR:1.49, CI:1.18–1.88, p < 0.001) and higher number of antihypertensive drugs (aOR:1.68, CI:1.36–2.08, p < 0.001) during follow-up. In low-risk subgroup, time-to-therapy > 2 years did not impact on BP control and number of drugs. Background and Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the risk and mechanisms of air entry into the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) circuit through the central venous catheter (CVC) in a veno-venous configuration. The primary goal was to assess the impact of different air volumes on ECMO circuit performance at varying pump speeds. Material and Methods: The study utilized a circuit model to simulate ECMO conditions and evaluate the potential entry points of air, specifically through the unprotected lumen of the CVC. Various interventions, such as the use of a closed three-way stopcock or clave, were implemented to assess their efficacy in preventing air entry. Results: The unprotected lumen of the central venous catheter posed a significant risk for air entry into the ECMO circuit. The introduction of a closed three-way stopcock or clave proved effective in preventing air ingress through the central venous catheter. Auditory cues, such as a distinct hissing sound, served as an early warning sign of air presence in the circuit. The study demonstrated that even small volumes of air, as minimal as 1 mL, could pass through the oxygenator at specific pump speeds, and larger volumes could lead to pump dysfunction. Conclusions: The study identified the unprotected lumen of the central venous catheter as a potential entry point for air into the ECMO circuit. The use of a closed three-way stopcock or one-way valve was found to be a reliable protective measure against air infiltration. Early detection through the observation of a hissing sound in the circuit provided a valuable warning sign. Cyclopiazonic acid (CPA) is an indole-tetramic acid neurotoxin produced by Aspergillus and Penicillium genera present mainly in fruit, cereals and nuts. This study compares the cytotoxicity produced by CPA after 24, 48 and 72 h of exposure using both monolayers and 3D spheroids in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells. Furthermore, CPA toxicokinetics was evaluated using in silico models. Cytotoxicity increased dose- and time-dependently, as shown by the MTT assay. The lowest CPA IC50 values were found in the monolayer study compared to the 3D spheroids at all exposure times (24 h: 864.01 vs. 1132; 48 h: 437 vs. 1069; 72 h: 392 vs. 567 nM). The CPA exposure on SH-SY5Y spheroid organization and morphology was also studied. Morphological changes, including spheroid disaggregation, were observed after mycotoxin exposure. The in silico methods, SwissADME and admetSAR, were used for short and full ADMEt profiles of CPA. The ADMEt predictive profile shows high gastrointestinal absorption and ability to penetrate the blood–brain barrier. Including in silico studies emphasizes the comprehensive approach to understanding mycotoxin toxicity and risk assessment. By combining in vitro 3D spheroid models with computational simulations, this study aims to provide a holistic perspective on the effects of CPA, enhancing the accuracy and relevance of our findings. Mulibrey nanism (MN) is a extremely rare genetic condition first described in 1973, with around 150 cases reported worldwide. MN is characterised by growth delay and multiorgan manifestations, the most fatal being a combination restrictive-constrictive, perimyocardial heart disease that results in diastolic heart failure. We present a male toddler with MN who presented with recurrent episodes of hypoxia, feeding intolerance, and generalised swelling (anasarca) in the setting of subtle echocardiographic findings. A multidisciplinary and systematic diagnostic approach was used to determine the underlying aetiology. Invasive cardiac testing via right heart catheterisation revealed the final diagnosis of restrictive cardiomyopathy. Transplant decision-making was limited due to hepatic involvement. This case highlights the limitations of echocardiography in diagnosing restrictive cardiomyopathy, which has a preserved ejection fraction, as well the need for multidisciplinary involvement and a family-centred approach in treating patients with this rare condition. Aims: We report the results of a real‐world study based on heart failure (HF) patients' continuous remote monitoring strategy using the CardioMEMS system to assess the impact of this device on healthcare outcomes, costs, and patients' management and quality of life. Methods and results: We enrolled seven patients (69.00 ± 4.88 years; 71.43% men) with HF, implanted with CardioMEMS, and daily remote monitored to optimize both tailored adjustments of home therapy and/or hospital infusions of levosimendan. We recorded clinical, pharmacological, biochemical, and echocardiographic parameters and data on hospitalizations, emergency room access, visits, and costs. Following the implantation of CardioMEMS, we observed a 50% reduction in the total number of hospitalizations and a 68.7% reduction in the number of days in the hospital. Accordingly, improved patient quality of life was recorded with EQ‐5D (pre 58.57 ± 10.29 vs. 1 year post 84.29 ± 19.02, P = 0.008). Echocardiographic data show a statistically significant improvement in both systolic pulmonary artery pressure (47.86 ± 8.67 vs. 35.14 ± 9.34, P = 0.022) and E/e′ (19.33 ± 5.04 vs. 12.58 ± 3.53, P = 0.023). The Quantikine® HS High‐Sensitivity Kit determined elevated interleukin‐6 values at enrolment in all patients, with a statistically significant reduction after 6 months (P = 0.0211). From an economic point of view, the net savings, including the cost of CardioMEMS, were on average €1580 per patient during the entire period of observation, while the analysis performed 12 months after the implant vs. 12 months before showed a net saving of €860 per patient. The ad hoc analysis performed on the levosimendan infusions resulted in 315 days of hospital avoidance and a saving of €205 158 for the seven patients enrolled during the observation period. (1) Background: The kick of the ball in soccer is considered one of the most important technical gestures in soccer. Despite this, there is little evidence on ball-striking performance factors in base soccer. The main objectives of the present study were to identify the potential factors of long-ball kicking (LBK) performance and to determine the target training cut-off for LBK performance in young soccer players. (2) Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted with 31 soccer players, with ages ranging from 12 to 18 years. Age, anthropometric data, sport experience, range of motion (ROM) and maximal isometric strength (MIS) of the lower limb were noted. Kick-of-the-ball performance was assessed by maximum ball displacement per kick. A k-mean cluster analysis determined two groups according to ball-kicking performance: low group (LPG-LBK) and high group (HPG-LBK). (3) Results: Differences were found between both groups in age, body mass, body mass index, leg length and knee flexion ROM (BF10 ≤ 6.33; δ ≥ 0.86 (moderate or higher)). Among the factors discussed above, age was the strongest predictor of ball-striking performance (odds ratio = 2.867; p = 0.003). The optimal cut-off for age predicting those players most likely to have a higher ball-striking performance was determined to be 13.5 years (p = 0.001; area under the curve = 85.3%). (4) Conclusions: Age over 13.5 increases the chances of a higher optimal ball-striking performance. Natural products (NPs) have long been used as a rich source of bioactive compounds for drug development. Recent technological advancements have revitalised natural products research as evidenced by increased publications in this field. In this editorial review, we highlight key points from the 2020 British Journal of Pharmacology (BJP) practical guide, which outlines standards for natural products research reports, and provide papers published in BJP between years 2020 to 2023 that demonstrate adherence to these guidelines. Looking ahead, we discuss the potential of chemical proteomics approaches to elucidate natural products mechanisms of action and identify therapeutic targets for future research. Background: Root phenotyping is particularly challenging because of complexity and inaccessibility of root apparatus. Orientation is one of the most important architectural traits of roots and its characterization is generally addressed using multiple approaches often based on overall measurements which are difficult to correlate to plant specific physiological aspects and its genetic features. Hence, a 3D image analysis approach, based on the recent method of Straumit, is proposed in this study to obtain a local mapping of root angles. Results: Proposed method was applied here on radicles of carrot seedlings grown in real weightlessness on the International Space Station (ISS) and on Earth simulated weightlessness by clinorotation. A reference experiment in 1 g static condition on Earth was also performed. Radicles were imaged by X-ray micro-CT and two novel root orientation traits were defined: the "root angle to sowing plane" (RASP) providing accurate angle distributions for each analysed radicle and the "root orientation changes" (ROC) number. The parameters of the RASP distributions and the ROC values did not exhibit any significant difference in orientation between radicles grown under clinorotation and on the ISS. Only a slight thickening in root corners was found in simulated vs real weightlessness. Such results showed that a simple uniaxial clinostat can be an affordable analog in experimental studies reckoning on weightless radicles growth. Conclusions: The proposed local orientation mapping approach can be extended also to different root systems providing a contribution in the challenging task of phenotyping complex and important plant structures such as roots. Long GRB hosts at z < 1 are usually low-mass, low-metallicity star-forming galaxies. Here we present the most detailed, spatially resolved study of the host of GRB 171205A so far, a grand-design barred spiral galaxy at z = 0.036. Our analysis includes MUSE integral field spectroscopy complemented with high-spatial-resolution UV/VIS HST imaging and CO(1−0) and H I 21 cm data. The GRB is located in a small star-forming region in a spiral arm of the galaxy at a deprojected distance of ∼8 kpc from the center. The galaxy shows a smooth negative metallicity gradient and the metallicity at the GRB site is half solar, slightly below the mean metallicity at the corresponding distance from the center. Star formation in this galaxy is concentrated in a few H II regions between 5 and 7 kpc from the center and at the end of the bar, inwards from the GRB region; however the H II region hosting the GRB is in the top 10% of the regions with the highest specific star-formation rate. The stellar population at the GRB site has a very young component (< 5 Myr) that contributes a significant part of the light. Ionized and molecular gas show only minor deviations at the end of the bar. A parallel study found an asymmetric H I distribution and some additional gas near the position of the GRB, which might explain the star-forming region of the GRB site. Our study shows that long GRBs can occur in many types of star-forming galaxies; however the actual GRB sites have consistently low metallicity, high star formation rates, and a young population. Furthermore, gas inflow or interactions triggering the star formation producing the GRB progenitor might not be evident in ionized or even molecular gas but only in H I. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: This review aimed to critically appraise the most recent orthopedic literature around cone beam weightbearing computed tomography (WBCT), summarizing what evidence has been provided so far and identifying the main research trends in the area. Methods: This scoping review was performed on studies published between January 2013 and December 2023 on the Pubmed database. All studies (both clinical and nonclinical) in which WBCT had been used were critically analyzed to extract the aim (or aims) of the study, and the main findings related to the role of this imaging modality in the diagnostic pathway. Results: Out of 1759 studies, 129 were selected. One hundred five manuscripts (81%) dealt with elective orthopedic conditions. The majority of the analyses (88 studies; 84%) were performed on foot and ankle conditions, while 13 (12%) studies looked at knee pathologies. There was a progressive increase in the number of studies published over the years. Progressive Collapsing Foot Deformity (22 studies; 25%) and Hallux Valgus (19 studies; 21%) were frequent subjects. Twenty-four (19%) manuscripts dealt with traumatic conditions. A particular interest in syndesmotic injuries was documented (12 studies; 60%). Conclusions: In this review, we documented an increasing interest in clinical applications of weightbearing CT in the orthopedic field between 2013 and 2023. The majority of the analyses focused on conditions related to the foot and the ankle; however, we found several works investigating the value of WBCT on other joints (in particular, the knee). During the Roman age, the southern promontory of the gulf of Baia was the perfect location for the construction of villae maritimae for the Roman élite that decided to spend their summer residences by the sea. One of these residences is now located in the military fortress of the Castello Aragonese di Baia, built in 1495 CE during the Aragonese period (15th century). Here, during restoration works, the ruins of the residential sector of the villa, which historical sources ascribe to Caesar, were unearthed. The most representative evidence of this is the outstanding in situ remain of mosaics, decorated plasters and finely frescoed surfaces decorated according to the repertoire of the II style. This research aims to investigate the polychromy of a wall decoration representing a perspective depiction of architectural scenes en trompe l'oeil analysed by means of a multi-analytical, non-destructive approach performed in situ. The combined use of spectroscopic techniques (portable X-ray fluorescence, Raman and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) points out the use of a characteristic Roman palette, quantitatively assessed by colorimetric measurements. It consists of red and yellow ochre, calcite, hematite, organic black pigments, precious materials such as cinnabar and Egyptian blue, green copper compounds. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy also revealed the presence of synthetic resins, likely used for the conservation of mural paintings. These are, however, damaged by atmospheric humidity, as detected by Infrared Thermography. Gypsum has been identified as the main weathering product. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
