Context. Near- to mid-infrared observations (from Spitzer and JWST) have revealed a hidden population of galaxies at redshift z = 3 − 6 called optically dark objects, which are believed to be massive and dusty star-formers. They contribute substantially to the cosmic star-formation rate (SFR) density at z ∼ 4 − 5 (up to 30 − 40%). Aims. While optically dark sources are widely recognized as a significant component of the stellar mass function, the history of their stellar mass assembly (and the evolution of their interstellar medium) remains unexplored. However, they are thought to be the progenitors of the more massive early-type galaxies found in present-day groups and clusters. It is thus important to examine the possible connection between dark sources and merging events in order to understand the environment in which they live. Methods. Here, we report our search for close companions in a sample of 19 optically-dark objects identified in the SMACS0723 JWST deep field. They were selected in the NIRCam F444W band and undetected below 2 μm. We restricted our analysis to the reddest (i.e., F277W–F444W > 1.3) and brightest (F444W < 26 mag) objects. Results. We identified KLAMA, an optically dark source showing a very close companion (angular distance < 0.5″). The spatially resolved SED fitting procedure indicates that all components lying within 1.5″ of who is it the dark source are indeed at z ∼ 5.7. Tidal features (leading to a whale-shaped morphology) corroborate the hypothesis that KLAMA is the most massive (log(M⋆/M⊙) > 10.3) and dusty (AV ∼ 3 at the core) system of an ongoing merger with a mass ratio of ∼10. Thus, around ten similar merger events would be required to double the stellar mass of KLAMA. Merging systems with properties similar to KLAMA are identified in the SERRA simulations, allowing us to reconstruct their stellar-mass assembly history and predict their molecular gas properties (in particular, the [CII] emission for the simulated system). The discovery of mergers within dark galaxies at the end of the Epoch of Reionization highlights the importance of conducting a statistical search for additional candidates in deep NIRCam fields. American-type financial instruments are often priced with specific Monte Carlo techniques whose efficiency critically depends on the dimensionality of the problem and the available computational power. Our work proposes a novel approach for pricing Bermudan swaptions, well-known interest rate derivatives, using supervised learning algorithms. In particular, we link the price of a Bermudan swaption to its natural hedges, which include the underlying European swaptions, and other relevant financial quantities through supervised learning non-parametric regressions. We explore several algorithms, ranging from linear models to decision tree-based models and neural networks and compare their predictive performances. Our results indicate that all supervised learning algorithms are reliable and fast, with ridge regressor, neural networks, and gradient-boosted regression trees performing the best for the pricing problem. Furthermore, using feature importance techniques, we identify the most important driving factors of a Bermudan swaption price, confirming that the maximum underlying European swaption value is the dominant feature. The MIGHTEE survey utilizes the South African MeerKAT radio telescope to observe four extragalactic deep fields, with the aim of advancing our understanding of the formation and evolution of galaxies across cosmic time. MIGHTEE's frequency coverage encompasses the |$\textrm {H}\scriptstyle \mathrm{I}$|  line to a redshift of z |$\simeq$|  0.58, and OH megamasers to z |$\simeq$|  0.9. We present the MIGHTEE- |$\textrm {H}\scriptstyle \mathrm{I}$|  imaging products for the COSMOS field, using a total of 94.2 h on-target and a close-packed mosaic of 15 individual pointings. The spectral imaging covers two broad, relatively interference-free regions (960–1150 and 1290–1520 MHz) within MeerKAT's L -band, with up to 26 kHz spectral resolution (5.5 km s |$^{-1}$| at z  = 0). The median noise in the highest spectral resolution data is 74 μ Jy beam |$^{-1}$|⁠ , corresponding to a 5 |$\sigma$| |$\textrm {H}\scriptstyle \mathrm{I}$|  mass limit of 10 |$^{8.5}$|  M |$_{\odot }$| for a 300 km s |$^{-1}$| line at z  = 0.07. The mosaics cover |$\gt $| 4 deg |$^{2}$|⁠ , provided at multiple angular resolution / sensitivity pairings, with an angular resolution for |$\textrm {H}\scriptstyle \mathrm{I}$|  at z  = 0 of 12 arcsec. We describe the spectral line processing workflow that will be the basis for future MIGHTEE- |$\textrm {H}\scriptstyle \mathrm{I}$|  products, and validation of, and some early results from, the spectral imaging of the COSMOS field. We find no evidence for line emission at the position of the z  = 0.376 |$\textrm {H}\scriptstyle \mathrm{I}$|  line reported from the CHILES survey at a |$\gt $| 94 per cent confidence level, placing a 3 |$\sigma$| upper limit of 8.1 |$\times$|  10 |$^{9}$|  M |$_{\odot }$| on |$M_{\mathrm{HI}}$| for this galaxy. Purpose: To investigate a possible link between acute Epstein-Barr virus infection and Lemierre syndrome, a rare yet life-threatening infection. Methods: A systematic review was conducted adhering to the 2020 Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Diagnosis criteria for Lemierre syndrome were established, and data extraction encompassed demographic data, clinical, and laboratory information. Results: Out of 985 initially identified papers, 132 articles were selected for the final analysis. They reported on 151 cases of Lemierre syndrome (76 female and 75 male patients with a median of 18 years) alongside interpretable results for Epstein-Barr virus serology. Among these, 38 cases (25%) tested positive for acute Epstein-Barr virus serology. There were no differences in terms of age, sex, or Fusobacterium presence between the serologically positive and negative groups. Conversely, instances of cervical thrombophlebitis and pulmonary complications were significantly higher (P = 0.0001) among those testing negative. The disease course was lethal in one case for each of the two groups. Conclusions: This analysis provides evidence of an association between acute Epstein-Barr virus infection and Lemierre syndrome. Background: Inborn errors of glutathione metabolism may cause high anion gap metabolic acidosis due to pyroglutamic acid accumulation. Since 1988, cases of this acidosis have been reported in individuals without these defects. Methods: Given the poorly characterized predisposing factors, presentation, management, and prognosis of acquired pyroglutamic acidosis, we conducted a systematic review using the National Library of Medicine, Excerpta Medica, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases. Results: A total of 131 cases were found. Most patients were females (79%), adults (92%) aged 51 years or older (66%) with pre-existing conditions (74%) such as undernutrition, alcohol-use disorder, or kidney disease, and had an ongoing infection (69%). The clinical features included diminished consciousness (60%), Kussmaul breathing (56%), and nausea or vomiting (27%). At least 92% of patients were on paracetamol therapy for >10 days at an appropriate dose, 32% on a β-lactamase-resistant penicillin, and 2.3% on vigabatrin. Besides severe anion gap acidosis, patients also presented with hypokalemia (24%) and kidney function deterioration (41%). Management involved discontinuing the offending drug (100%), bicarbonate (63%), acetylcysteine (42%), and acute kidney replacement therapy (18%). The fatality rate was 18%, which was higher without acetylcysteine (24%) compared to with it (11%). Conclusions: Acquired pyroglutamic acidosis is a rare, potentially fatal metabolic derangement, which usually occurs after paracetamol use, frequently combined with a β-lactamase-resistant penicillin or vigabatrin. This condition predominantly affects adults, especially women with factors like undernutrition, alcohol-use disorder, or kidney disease, often during infection. Infants with a congenital anomaly of the kidney and urinary tract sometimes present with hyponatremia, hyperkalemia, and metabolic acidosis due to under-responsiveness to aldosterone, hereafter referred to as secondary pseudo-hypoaldosteronism. The purpose of this report is to investigate pseudo-hypoaldosteronism in infant urinary tract infection. A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines after PROSPERO (CRD42022364210) registration. The National Library of Medicine, Excerpta Medica, Web of Science, and Google Scholar without limitations were used. Inclusion criteria involved pediatric cases with documented overt pseudo-hypoaldosteronism linked to urinary tract infection. Data extraction included demographics, clinical features, laboratory parameters, management, and course. Fifty-seven reports were selected, detailing 124 cases: 95 boys and 29 girls, 10 months or less of age (80% of cases were 4 months or less of age). The cases exhibited hyponatremia, hyperkalemia, acidosis, and activated renin-angiotensin II-aldosterone system. An impaired kidney function was found in approximately every third case. Management included antibiotics, fluids, and, occasionally, emergency treatment of hyperkalemia, hyponatremia, or acidosis. The recovery time averaged 1 week for electrolyte, acid–base imbalance, and kidney function. Notably, anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract were identified in 105 (85%) cases. Conclusions:This review expands the understanding of overt transient pseudo-hypoaldosteronism complicating urinary tract infection. Management involves antimicrobials, fluid replacement, and consideration of electrolyte imbalances. Raising awareness of this condition within pediatric hospitalists is desirable. Background. In high-income countries, shopping for non-prescription multivitamin–multimineral supplements has tremendously increased. Objective and Methods. The purpose of this labeling analysis is to inform on the daily elemental iron (with or without vitamin C) supply provided by multivitamin–multimineral supplements sold online by Amazon in Western and Southern Europe (amazon.es®, amazon.de®, amazon.it®, and amazon.fr®). Results. We identified 298 iron-containing multivitamin–multimineral preparations sold by Amazon marketplaces: 153 preparations sourced from amazon.de®, 68 from amazon.fr®, 54 from amazon.it®, and 23 from amazon.es®. The daily iron dose provided by these preparations was 14 [5–14] mg (median and interquartile range), with no differences among the marketplaces. Approximately 90% (n = 265) of the preparations contained ferrous iron. Moreover, 85% (n = 253) of the preparations were fortified with vitamin C in a dose of 80 [40–100] mg daily. Conclusions. The median supply of iron (about 14 mg) and vitamin C (80 mg) in iron-containing multivitamin–multimineral preparations offered on Amazon platforms in Western and Southern Europe falls below that currently recommended for iron deficiency in review articles, namely 100 mg of iron and 500 mg of vitamin C per day. The iron supply of iron-containing multivitamin–multimineral preparations falls also below the dose of 30–60 mg advocated to prevent iron deficiency in menstruating women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Human mesenchymal stromal cells (hMSCs), whether used alone or together with three-dimensional scaffolds, are the best-studied postnatal stem cells in regenerative medicine. In this study, innovative composite scaffolds consisting of a core–shell architecture were seeded with bone-marrow-derived hMSCs (BM-hMSCs) and tested for their biocompatibility and remarkable capacity to promote and support bone regeneration and mineralization. The scaffolds were prepared by grafting three different amounts of gelatin–chitosan (CH) hydrogel into a 3D-printed polylactic acid (PLA) core (PLA-CH), and the mechanical and degradation properties were analyzed. The BM-hMSCs were cultured in the scaffolds with the presence of growth medium (GM) or osteogenic medium (OM) with differentiation stimuli in combination with fetal bovine serum (FBS) or human platelet lysate (hPL). The primary objective was to determine the viability, proliferation, morphology, and spreading capacity of BM-hMSCs within the scaffolds, thereby confirming their biocompatibility. Secondly, the BM-hMSCs were shown to differentiate into osteoblasts and to facilitate scaffold mineralization. This was evinced by a positive Von Kossa result, the modulation of differentiation markers (osteocalcin and osteopontin), an expression of a marker of extracellular matrix remodeling (bone morphogenetic protein-2), and collagen I. The results of the energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDS) clearly demonstrate the presence of calcium and phosphorus in the samples that were incubated in OM, in the presence of FBS and hPL, but not in GM. The chemical distribution maps of calcium and phosphorus indicate that these elements are co-localized in the same areas of the sections, demonstrating the formation of hydroxyapatite. In conclusion, our findings show that the combination of BM-hMSCs and PLA-CH, regardless of the amount of hydrogel content, in the presence of differentiation stimuli, can provide a construct with enhanced osteogenicity for clinically relevant bone regeneration. Context. Stellar bars are common morphological structures in the local Universe; according to optical and NIR surveys, they are present in about two-thirds of disc galaxies. These elongated structures are also believed to play a crucial role in secular evolutionary processes, because they are able to efficiently redistribute gas, stars, and angular momentum within their hosts, although it remains unclear as to whether they enhance or suppress star formation. A useful tool to investigate this ambiguity is the main sequence (MS) relation, which tightly links stellar mass (M⋆) and star formation rate (SFR). Aims. The main goal of this work is to explore star-formation processes in barred galaxies in order to assess the relevance of bars in star-formation quenching and whether or not they affect the typical log-linear trend of the resolved MS. Methods. To this purpose, we carried out a spatially resolved analysis on subkiloparsec (subkpc) scales for a sample of six nearby barred galaxies. We collected multi-wavelength photometric data from far-ultraviolet (FUV) to far-infrared (FIR) from the DustPedia database and applied a panchromatic spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting procedure on square apertures of fixed angular size (8″ × 8″) using the magphys code. Results. For each galaxy, we obtain the distributions of stellar mass and SFR surface density and relate them in the log Σ⋆ − log ΣSFR plane, deriving the spatially resolved MS relation. Although significant galaxy-to-galaxy variations are in place, we infer the presence of a common anti-correlation track in correspondence with the bar-hosting region, which shows systematically lower SFRs. This central quiescent signature can be interpreted as the result of a bar-driven depletion of gas reservoirs and a consequent halting of star formation. The rising obesity epidemic requires effective and sustainable weight loss intervention strategies that take into account both of individual preferences and environmental impact. This study aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of an innovative digital biohacking approach for dietary modifications in promoting sustainable weight loss and reducing carbon footprint impact. A pilot study was conducted involving four participants who monitored their weight, diet, and activities over the course of a year. Data on food consumption, carbon footprint impact, calorie intake, macronutrient composition, weight, and energy expenditure were collected. A digital replica of the metabolism based on nutritional information, the Personalized Metabolic Avatar (PMA), was used to simulate weight changes, plan, and execute the digital biohacking approach to dietary interventions. The dietary modifications suggested by the digital biohacking approach resulted in an average daily calorie reduction of 236.78 kcal (14.24%) and a 15.12% reduction in carbon footprint impact (-736.48 gCO2eq) per participant. Digital biohacking simulations using PMA showed significant differences in weight change compared to actual recorded data, indicating effective weight reduction with the digital biohacking diet. Additionally, linear regression analysis on real data revealed a significant correlation between adherence to the suggested diet and weight loss. In conclusion, the digital biohacking recommendations provide a personalized and sustainable approach to weight loss, simultaneously reducing calorie intake and minimizing the carbon footprint impact. Introduction: Worldwide, arterial hypertension is the foremost preventable and modifiable cardiovascular risk factor. In addition to lifestyle changes, recent international guidelines recommend single-pill, low-dose combinations as initial treatment strategy. We investigated whether this approach is feasible in a rural sub-Saharan Africa setting. Methods: Diagnosis of hypertension was established over three sets of blood pressure measurements, performed according to the European Society of Hypertension recommendations by trained personnel, using a validated, automated, oscillometric device OMRON M7 IT-HEM-7322-E. In 98 individuals with arterial hypertension, a once-daily, single-pill combination of olmesartan, amlodipine, and hydrochlorothiazide was prescribed at an appropriate dose. Patients were instructed on its administration and potential side effects and encouraged towards lifestyle modifications. The treatment regimen was adjusted, if needed, at each outpatient clinic scheduled after 4, 8, 12, and 16 weeks. Results: Seventy-nine patients (aged 61 [53–70] years; median and interquartile range) strictly adhered to the treatment schedule, while 19 individuals (70 [65–80] years) dropped out. Blood pressure was < 140/90 mmHg after 4 weeks in 44 (56%), after 8 weeks in 62 (78%), after 12 weeks in 69 (87%), and after 16 weeks in 74 (94%) participants. Excellent tolerance was reported. Conclusions: These results provide real-life evidence that hypertension management with a once-daily, single-pill combination of olmesartan, amlodipine, and hydrochlorothiazide as initial treatment is feasible and effective also in a rural sub-Saharan setting. Background: The progressive aging of the population and the increasing complexity of health issues contribute to a growing number of older individuals seeking emergency care. This study aims to assess the state of the art of care provided to older people in the Emergency Departments of Lombardy, the most populous region in Italy, counting over 2 million people aged 65 years and older. Methods: An online cross-sectional survey was developed and disseminated among emergency medicine physicians and physicians affiliated to the Lombardy section of the Italian Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology (SIGG), during June and July 2023. The questionnaire covered hospital profiles, geriatric consultation practices, risk assessment tools, discharge processes and perspectives on geriatric emergency care. Results: In this mixed method research, 219 structured interviews were collected. The majority of physicians were employed in hospitals, with 54.7% being geriatricians. Critical gaps in older patient's care were identified, including the absence of dedicated care pathways, insufficient awareness of screening tools, and a need for enhanced professional training. Conclusions: Tailored protocols and geriatric educational programs are crucial for improving the quality of emergency care provided to older individuals. Valuation adjustments, collectively named XVA, play an important role in modern derivatives pricing to take into account additional price components such as counterparty and funding risk premia. They are an exotic price component carrying a significant model risk and computational effort even for vanilla trades. We adopt an industry-standard realistic and complete XVA modelling framework, typically used by XVA trading desks, based on multi-curve time-dependent volatility G2++ stochastic dynamics calibrated on real market data, and a multi-step Monte Carlo simulation including both variation and initial margins. We apply this framework to the most common linear and non-linear interest rates derivatives, also comparing the MC results with XVA analytical formulas. Within this framework, we identify the most relevant model risk sources affecting the precision of XVA figures and we measure the corresponding computational effort. In particular, we show how to build a parsimonious and efficient MC time simulation grid able to capture the spikes arising in collateralized exposure during the margin period of risk. As a consequence, we also show how to tune accuracy versus performance, leading to sufficiently robust XVA figures in a reasonable time, a very important feature for practical applications. Furthermore, we provide a quantification of the XVA model risk stemming from the existence of a range of different parameterizations according to the EU prudent valuation regulation. Finally, this work also serves as an handbook containing step-by-step instructions for the implementation of a complete, realistic and robust modelling framework of collateralized exposure and XVA. We present the first measurement of H i mass of star-forming galaxies in different large scale structure environments from a blind survey at z ∼ 0.37. In particular, we carry out a spectral line stacking analysis considering 2875 spectra of colour-selected star-forming galaxies undetected in H i at 0.23 < z < 0.49 in the COSMOS field, extracted from the MIGHTEE-H i Early Science data cubes, acquired with the MeerKAT radio telescope. We stack galaxies belonging to different subsamples depending on three different definitions of large-scale structure environment: local galaxy overdensity, position inside the host dark matter halo (central, satellite, or isolated), and cosmic web type (field, filament, or knot). We first stack the full star-forming galaxy sample and find a robust H i detection yielding an average galaxy H i mass of |$M_{\rm H \, {\small I}}=(8.12\pm 0.75)\times 10^9\, {\rm M}_\odot$| at ∼11.8σ. Next, we investigate the different subsamples finding a negligible difference in M H i as a function of the galaxy overdensity. We report an H i excess compared to the full sample in satellite galaxies (M H i  = (11.31 ± 1.22) × 109, at ∼10.2σ) and in filaments (M H i  = (11.62 ± 0.90) × 109. Conversely, we report non-detections for the central and knot galaxies subsamples, which appear to be H i -deficient. We find the same qualitative results also when stacking in units of H i fraction (f H i ). We conclude that the H i amount in star-forming galaxies at the studied redshifts correlates with the large-scale structure environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the discovery of the most distant OH megamaser (OHM) to be observed in the main lines, using data from the MeerKAT International Giga-Hertz Tiered Extragalactic Exploration (MIGHTEE) survey. At a newly measured redshift of z  = 0.7092, the system has strong emission in both the 1665 MHz (L ≈ 2500 L⊙) and 1667 MHz (L ≈ 4.5 × 104 L⊙) transitions, with both narrow and broad components. We interpret the broad line as a high-velocity-dispersion component of the 1667 MHz transition, with velocity v ∼ 330 km s−1 with respect to the systemic velocity. The host galaxy has a stellar mass of M ⋆ = 2.95 × 1010 M⊙ and a star formation rate of SFR = 371 M⊙ yr−1, placing it ∼1.5 dex above the main sequence for star-forming galaxies at this redshift, and can be classified as an ultraluminous infrared galaxy. Alongside the optical imaging data, which exhibit evidence for a tidal tail, this suggests that the OHM arises from a system that is currently undergoing a merger, which is stimulating star formation and providing the necessary conditions for pumping the OH molecule to saturation. The OHM is likely to be lensed, with a magnification factor of ∼2.5, and perhaps more if the maser emitting region is compact and suitably offset relative to the centroid of its host galaxy's optical light. This discovery demonstrates that spectral line mapping with the new generation of radio interferometers may provide important information on the cosmic merger history of galaxies. Background: Reviews on Down syndrome do not or only marginally address the issue of kidney and urogenital tract abnormalities, and lower urinary tract dysfunctions. Hence, we performed a meta-analysis of the literature. Methods: A literature search was undertaken in the Library of Medicine, Web of Science and Excerpta Medica. The search algorithm combined various keywords: (Down syndrome OR trisomy 21 OR mongolism) AND (kidney OR urinary tract OR bladder) AND (malformation OR dysfunction OR anomaly OR abnormality OR size). The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement was used. Results: Eight case-control studies were retained for the final analysis. Three studies addressed the prevalence of kidney and urogenital tract abnormalities: an increased pooled relative risk of 5.49 (95%-CI: 1.78–16.93) was observed in Down syndrome. Penile malformations, obstructive malformations (including urethral valves), dilated urinary tract system, and kidney hypodysplasia were especially common. Three reports addressed the prevalence of lower urinary tract dysfunction: an increased pooled relative risk of 2.95 (95%-CI: 1.15–7.56) was observed. Finally, an autoptic study and an ultrasound study disclosed a reduced kidney size in Down syndrome. Conclusions: This meta-analysis indicates that abnormalities of the kidney and urogenital tract, lower urinary tract dysfunctions, and a reduced kidney size present with an increased frequency in individuals with Down syndrome. An acute aseptic meningitis has been occasionally observed on intravenous polyclonal human immunoglobulin therapy. Since case reports cannot be employed to draw inferences about the relationships between immunoglobulin therapy and meningitis, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature. Eligible were cases, case series, and pharmacovigilance studies. We found 71 individually documented cases (36 individuals ≤ 18 years of age) of meningitis. Ninety percent of cases presented ≤ 3 days after initiating immunoglobulin therapy and recovered within ≤ 7 days (with a shorter disease duration in children: ≤ 3 days in 29 (94%) cases). In 22 (31%) instances, the authors noted a link between the onset of meningitis and a rapid intravenous infusion of immunoglobulins. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed a predominantly neutrophilic (N = 46, 66%) pleocytosis. Recurrences after re-exposure were observed in eight (N = 11%) patients. Eight case series addressed the prevalence of meningitis in 4089 patients treated with immunoglobulins. A pooled prevalence of 0.6% was noted. Finally, pharmacovigilance data revealed that meningitis temporally associated with intravenous immunoglobulin therapy occurred with at least five different products. The last decade has been characterized by exciting findings on eu- or hypoglycemic ketosis and ketoacidosis. This review emphasizes the following five key points: 1. Since the traditional nitroprusside-glycine dipstick test for urinary ketones is often falsely negative, the blood determination of β-hydroxybutyrate, the predominant ketone body, is currently advised for a comprehensive assessment of ketone body status; 2. Fasting and infections predispose to relevant ketosis and ketoacidosis especially in newborns, infants, children 7 years or less of age, and pregnant, parturient, or lactating women; 3. Several forms of carbohydrate restriction (typically less than 20% of the daily caloric intake) are employed to induce ketosis. These ketogenic diets have achieved great interest as antiepileptic treatment, in the management of excessive body weight, diabetes mellitus, and in sport training; 4. Intermittent fasting is more and more popular because it might benefit against cardiovascular diseases, cancers, neurologic disorders, and aging; 5. Gliflozins, a new group of oral antidiabetics inhibiting the renal sodium-glucose transporter 2, are an emerging cause of eu- or hypoglycemic ketosis and ketoacidosis. The article continues a trajectory of studies performed in the last few years regarding the topic of the body in discourse and urban planning design (Bianchetti. in Bodies between space and design, Jovis, Berlin, 2020, Bianchetti. in "Spazi corpi politiche" dialogue with Simona Forti and Paola Viganò, Biennale Democrazia, Turin, 25 March, Teatro Gobetti, 2023a, Bianchetti. in Le mura di Troia. Lo spazio ricompone i corpi. Donzelli, Rome, 2023b). It takes three books as its focus. The authors are: Colin Rowe and Dennis Hardy, Anthony Vidler, and Antoine Picon. I am personally very attached to these three books and believe they can help understand three different forms of the relationship between spaces and bodies. These forms of the relationship, respectively concern: the recomposition of bodies in space; the transfiguration of space that becomes projection of the neuroses and phobias of those who inhabit it; the tension between materiality and disembodiment. Recomposition, transfiguration, and disembodiment are ways in which spaces and bodies relate to each other. They speak of vulnerability, but also of the power of the body-in-space. The underlying question is: to what extent are urban planning policies and designs able to grasp the irreducibility of bodies? To what extent are they able to overcome the dedifferentiation that has created them for so long? Recomposition, transfiguration and disembodiment force us to reposition our attention beyond the ghost of a pure project, in the fallible and teeming kingdom of the relationships between bodies and spaces. Aims: Improving the composition of circulating fatty acids (FA) leads to a reduction in cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in high‐risk individuals. The membrane fluidity of red blood cells (RBC), which reflects circulating FA status, may be a valid biomarker of cardiovascular (CV) risk in type 2 diabetes (T2D). Methods: Red blood cell membrane fluidity, quantified as general polarization (GP), was assessed in 234 subjects with T2D, 86 with prior major CVD. Based on GP distribution, a cut‐off of.445 was used to divide the study cohort into two groups: the first with higher GP, called GEL, and the second, defined as lower GP (LGP). Lipidomic analysis was performed to evaluate FA composition of RBC membranes. Results: Although with comparable CV risk factors, the LGP group had a greater percentage of patients with major CVD than the GEL group (40% vs 24%, respectively, p <.05). Moreover, in a logistic regression analysis, a lower GP value was independently associated with the presence of macrovascular complications. Lipidomic analysis showed a clear shift of LGP membranes towards a pro‐inflammatory condition due to higher content of arachidonic acid and increased omega 6/omega 3 index. Conclusions: Increased membrane fluidity is associated with a higher CV risk in subjects with T2D. INTRODUCTION: The goal of the present work was to assess the incidence of dementia with onset before the age of 65 years (i.e., young‐onset dementia [YOD]) and define the frequencies of young‐onset Alzheimer's disease (AD), frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) in the general population. METHODS: The study was conducted from January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019 in Brescia province (population: 1,268,455). During the study period, all new YOD cases (incident YOD) were counted, and all patients' records reviewed. The incidence was standardized to the Italian general population in 2019. RESULTS: A total of 29 YOD patients were diagnosed. The age‐sex standardized incidence rate was 4.58 (95% confidence interval, 3.07–6.58) per 100,000 person‐years. No difference in incidence rate between YOD due to AD or FTLD (P = 0.83) and between sexes (P = 0.81) was observed. YOD incidence increased with age, reaching its peak after 60 years. DISCUSSION: Presenting neurodegenerative YOD phenotypes encompasses both AD and FTLD. Improved knowledge on YOD epidemiology is essential to adequately plan and organize health services. In order to capture the drought impacts on seed quality acquisition in Brassica napus and its potential interaction with early biotic stress, seeds of the 'Express' genotype of oilseed rape were characterized from late embryogenesis to full maturity from plants submitted to reduced watering (WS) with or without pre‐occurring inoculation by the telluric pathogen Plasmodiophora brassicae (Pb + WS or Pb, respectively), and compared to control conditions (C). Drought as a single constraint led to significantly lower accumulation of lipids, higher protein content and reduced longevity of the WS‐treated seeds. In contrast, when water shortage was preceded by clubroot infection, these phenotypic differences were completely abolished despite the upregulation of the drought sensor RD20. A weighted gene co‐expression network of seed development in oilseed rape was generated using 72 transcriptomes from developing seeds from the four treatments and identified 33 modules. Module 29 was highly enriched in heat shock proteins and chaperones that showed a stronger upregulation in Pb + WS compared to the WS condition, pointing to a possible priming effect by the early P. brassicae infection on seed quality acquisition. Module 13 was enriched with genes encoding 12S and 2S seed storage proteins, with the latter being strongly upregulated under WS conditions. Cis‐element promotor enrichment identified PEI1/TZF6, FUS3 and bZIP68 as putative regulators significantly upregulated upon WS compared to Pb + WS. Our results provide a temporal co‐expression atlas of seed development in oilseed rape and will serve as a resource to characterize the plant response towards combinations of biotic and abiotic stresses. Hypertension should be confirmed with the use of home BP measurement (HBPM) or 24h ambulatory BP measurement (ABPM). The aim of our study was to compare measurements obtained by OBPM, HBPM and ABPM in individuals with elevated OBPM participating in the population-based Swiss Longitudinal Cohort Study (SWICOS). Participants with OBPM ≥140/90 mmHg assessed their BP using HBPM and ABPM. The cut-off for hypertension was ≥135/85 mmHg for HBPM, ≥130/80 mmHg for ABPM. White-coat hypertension (WCH) was defined as normal HPBM and ABPM in participants not taking antihypertensive drugs. Uncontrolled hypertension was defined as hypertension in HBPM or ABPM despite antihypertensive treatment. Of 72 hypertensive subjects with office BP ≥140/90 mmHg and valid measurements of HBPM and ABPM, 39 were males (aged 62.8 ± 11.8y), 33 were females (aged 57.4 ± 14.2y). Hypertension was confirmed with HBPM and ABPM in 17 participants (24%), with ABPM only in 24 further participants (33%), and with HBPM only in 2 further participants (3%). Participants who had hypertension according to ABPM but not HBPM were younger (59 ± 11 y versus 67 ± 16 y; p < 0.001) and more frequently still working (83% versus 23%; p < 0.001). The prevalence of WCH was 28%. Among the 32 subjects taking antihypertensive drugs, uncontrolled hypertension was found in 49%. This population-based study found a high prevalence of WCH and potential uncontrolled hypertension among individuals with elevated OBPM. This study, therefore, supports the ESH recommendations of complementing OBPM by ABPM or HBPM. The use of HBPM instead of ABPM for the confirmation of hypertension in individuals with elevated OBPM might lead to underdiagnosis and uncontrolled hypertension, in particular in the younger working population. In these individuals, this study suggests using ABPM instead of HBPM. What is already known? Comparing blood pressure measurements in the doctor's office or clinic (OBPM) with out-of-office measurements (either self-measurement at home (HBPM) or ambulatory over 24 hours during both day and night times (ABPM)) improves the accuracy of hypertension diagnosis. Why was the study done? This study was done to provide additional information by comparing HBPM and ABPM in individuals with elevated OPBMs (≥140/≥90mmHg), who participated in the Swiss Longitudinal Cohort Study (SWICOS) What was found? Our study confirmed differences between office and out-of-office measurements. In 60% of the study participants, ABPM or HBPM confirmed the elevated OBPM but only around half of these participants were treated with antihypertensive drugs. A high proportion of the participants (28%) had white coat hypertension. What does this study add? Our study adds to the literature already available on this issue by reporting on data obtained from a cohort of individuals living in a countryside area of Southern Switzerland. This study also showed that HBPM might underestimate BP in the younger working population. How might this impact on clinical practice? Seminoma is the most common testicular cancer. Pituitary tumor-transforming gene 1 (PTTG1) is a securin showing oncogenic activity in several tumors. We previously demonstrated that nuclear PTTG1 promotes seminoma tumor invasion through its transcriptional activity on matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2) and E-cadherin (CDH1). We wondered if specific interactors could affect its subcellular distribution. To this aim, we investigated the PTTG1 interactome in seminoma cell lines showing different PTTG1 nuclear levels correlated with invasive properties. A proteomic approach upon PTTG1 immunoprecipitation uncovered new specific securin interactors. Western blot, confocal microscopy, cytoplasmic/nuclear fractionation, sphere-forming assay, and Atlas database interrogation were performed to validate the proteomic results and to investigate the interplay between PTTG1 and newly uncovered partners. We observed that spectrin beta-chain (SPTBN1) and PTTG1 were cofactors, with SPTBN1 anchoring the securin in the cytoplasm. SPTBN1 downregulation determined PTTG1 nuclear translocation, promoting its invasive capability. Moreover, a PTTG1 deletion mutant lacking SPTBN1 binding was strongly localized in the nucleus. The Atlas database revealed that seminomas that contained higher nuclear PTTG1 levels showed significantly lower SPTBN1 levels in comparison to non-seminomas. In human seminoma specimens, we found a strong PTTG1/SPTBN1 colocalization that decreases in areas with nuclear PTTG1 distribution. The accurate description of iron oxides/water interfaces requires reliable force field parameters that can be developed through comparison with sophisticated quantum mechanical calculations. Here, a set of CLASS2 force field parameters is optimized to describe the Fe–Owater cross-interaction through comparison with hybrid density functional theory (HSE06) calculations of the potential energy function for a single water molecule adsorbed on the Fe3O4 (001) surface and with density functional tight binding (DFTB+U) molecular dynamics simulations for a water trilayer on the same surface. The performance of the new parameters is assessed through the analysis of the number density profile of a water bulk (12 nm) sandwiched between two magnetite slabs of large surface area. In this work, we investigate the Fe3O4 (001) surface/water interface by combining several theoretical approaches, ranging from a hybrid functional method (HSE06) to density-functional tight-binding (DFTB) to molecular mechanics (MM). First, we assess the accuracy of the DFTB method to correctly reproduce HSE06 results on structural details and energetics and available experimental data for adsorption of isolated water, dimers, and trimers up to a water monolayer. Second, we build two possible configurations of a second and a third overlayer and perform molecular dynamics simulations with DFTB, monitoring the water orientation, the H-bond network, and the ordered water structure formation. To make our models more realistic, we then build a 12 nm-thick water multilayer on top of the Fe3O4 (001) surface slab model, which we investigate through MM-molecular dynamics (MD). The water layer structuring, revealed by the analysis of the atomic positions from a long MM-MD run for this large MM model, extends up to about 6–7 Å and nicely compares with that observed for a water trilayer model. However, MM and DFTB MD simulations show some discrepancy due to the poor description of the Fe⋯OH2 distance in MM that calls for further work in the parameterization of the model. The human gut microbiome, an intricate ecosystem housing trillions of microorganisms within the gastrointestinal tract, holds significant importance in human health and the development of diseases. Recent advances in technology have allowed for an in-depth exploration of the gut microbiome, shedding light on its composition and functions. Of particular interest is the role of diet in shaping the gut microbiome, influencing its diversity, population size, and metabolic functions. Precision nutrition, a personalized approach based on individual characteristics, has shown promise in directly impacting the composition of the gut microbiome. However, to fully understand the long-term effects of specific diets and food components on the gut microbiome and to identify the variations between individuals, longitudinal studies are crucial. Additionally, precise methods for collecting dietary data, alongside the application of machine learning techniques, hold immense potential in comprehending the gut microbiome's response to diet and providing tailored lifestyle recommendations. In this study, we investigated the complex mechanisms that govern the diverse impacts of nutrients and specific foods on the equilibrium and functioning of the individual gut microbiome of seven volunteers (four females and three males) with an average age of 40.9 ± 10.3 years, aiming at identifying potential therapeutic targets, thus making valuable contributions to the field of personalized nutrition. Long-term medication with valproic acid has been associated with acute pancreatitis. The purpose of this report is to gain insight into the features of this pancreatitis. A preregistered literature search (CRD42023438294) was performed on the National Library of Medicine, Excerpta Medica, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Patients with alcohol abuse disorder, gallstone disease, hypertriglyceridemia or hypercalcemia, patients with acute valproic acid intoxication, and patients with a pre-existing pancreatitis were excluded. For the final analysis, we retained 73 reports published between 1979 and 2023, which described 125 subjects (83 children and 42 adults predominantly affected by an epilepsy) with an acute pancreatitis related to valproic acid. The diagnosis was made 11 (3.0–24) months (median and interquartile range) after starting valproic acid. One hundred and five cases (84%) recovered and twenty (16%) died. Sex, age, dosage or circulating level of valproic acid, latency time, prevalence of intellectual disability, and antiepileptic co-medication were similar in cases with and without a lethal outcome. Nineteen subjects were rechallenged with valproic acid after recovery: sixteen (84%) cases developed a further episode of pancreatitis. Lipschütz genital ulcer is a self-limited, non-sexually acquired disorder characterized by the sudden onset of a few ulcers. A primary Epstein-Barr virus infection is currently considered the most recognized cause. Recent reports document cases temporally related with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) or immunization against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). We carried out a review of the literature to investigate the possible association between COVID-19 or the immunization against SARS-CoV-2 and genital ulcer. The pre-registered study (CRD42023376260) was undertaken following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses methodology. Excerpta Medica, the National Library of Medicine, and Web of Sciences were searched. Inclusion criteria encompassed instances of acute Lipschütz ulcer episodes that were temporally linked to either COVID-19 or a vaccination against SARS-CoV-2. Eighteen articles were retained. They provided information on 33 patients 15 (14–24) years of age (median and interquartile range), who experienced a total of 39 episodes of Lipschütz ulcer temporally associated with COVID-19 (N = 18) or an immunization against SARS-CoV-2 (N = 21). The possible concomitant existence of an acute Epstein-Barr virus infection was excluded in 30 of the 39 episodes. The clinical presentation and the disease duration were similar in episodes temporally associated with COVID-19 and in those associated with an immunization against SARS-CoV-2. Here we report two cases of myeloma patients who became positive for SARS‐CoV‐2 infection during the acute phase of autologous stem cell transplant. Both patients were promptly treated with monoclonal antibodies and remdesivir, and, despite the profound neutropenia and lymphopenia, they did not develop respiratory failure and they remained paucisymptomatic during the entire period of aplasia. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare workers (HCWs) in geriatric settings. Design: Online cross-sectional survey. Settings and Participants: 394 geriatric HCWs in Italy. Measurements: The survey was developed by a multidisciplinary team and disseminated in April 2022 to the members of two geriatric scientific societies (Italian Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology and Italian Association of Psychogeriatrics). The survey examined the experiences related to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as psychological burden and support. Work-related anxiety and distress related to the pandemic were studied using the SAVE-9 scale (Stress and Anxiety to Viral Epidemics). Results: Three hundred sixty-four participants (92.4%) changed their job activity during the pandemic and about half (50.9%) failed to cope with this change, 58 (14.7%) had increased work-related anxiety, and 39 (9.9%) work-related stress levels. Three hundred forty (86.3%) participants reported acute stress reaction symptoms, including irritability, depressed mood, headache, anxiety, and insomnia, and 262 (66.5%) required psychological support, mainly from friends/relatives (57.9%) and/or colleagues (32.5%). Furthermore, 342 participants (86.8%) recognized they would benefit from informal and formal psychological support in case of future similar emergencies. Conclusions: This study highlights the high psychological burden experienced by geriatric HCWs in Italy during the COVID-19 pandemic and emphasizes the need for supportive interventions. Aim: To systematically review the clinical features and outcomes of paediatric patients developing neurological complications associated with a rotavirus infection. Methods: A systematic literature review and meta‐analysis was performed, including articles published from 1984 to 2020. Neurological complications were classified into four groups: encephalitis, cerebellitis, encephalo‐cerebellitis and benign convulsions with mild gastroenteritis (CwG). Results: Out of 68 reports that fulfilled the research criteria, 99 cases of CwG, 39 cases of encephalitis, 18 cases of encephalo‐cerebellitis and five cases of cerebellitis were collected. Ninety‐five patients were from Asia. Median age was 22 (IQR 14–29) months, and the children who developed CwG were significantly younger (19, IQR 12–24 months, p < 0.0001) than the others. Status epilepticus was observed in 23% and 5% of the encephalitis and CwG groups respectively. The most frequently described neuroimaging finding were lesions of the splenium of corpus callosum. Four deaths were reported in the encephalitis group, whereas no fatal events were described in the other groups. Among the surviving children, the encephalo‐cerebellitis group showed the most severe long‐term outcome. All cases of CwG recovered completely. Conclusion: Older age at diagnosis and the development of encephalo‐cerebellitis are associated with a higher risk of long‐term complications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chewing is essential in regulating metabolism and initiating digestion. Various methods have been used to examine chewing, including analyzing chewing sounds and using piezoelectric sensors to detect muscle contractions. However, these methods struggle to distinguish chewing from other movements. Electromyography (EMG) has proven to be an accurate solution, although it requires sensors attached to the skin. Existing EMG devices focus on detecting the act of chewing or classifying foods and do not provide self-awareness of chewing habits. We developed a non-invasive device that evaluates a personalized chewing style by analyzing various aspects, like chewing time, cycle time, work rate, number of chews and work. It was tested in a case study comparing the chewing pattern of smokers and non-smokers, as smoking can alter chewing habits. Previous studies have shown that smokers exhibit reduced chewing speed, but other aspects of chewing were overlooked. The goal of this study is to present the device and provide additional insights into the effects of smoking on chewing patterns by considering multiple chewing features. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences, as non-smokers had more chews and higher work values, indicating more efficient chewing. Introduction: Propofol occasionally induces a green or pink-cloudy urine discoloration. A lesser-known effect is green discoloration of hair, milk, liver, or stool. We aimed to gain insight into the features of these disturbances. Methods: The terms ("propofol" OR "fospropofol") AND ("green" OR "pink" OR "cloudy" OR "pink-cloudy") were searched in Excerpta Medica, MEDLINE/PubMed®, and Web of Sciences databases, with no language limit, from inception up to February 2023 (CRD4202236804). Articles reporting individually documented cases were retained, and data were extracted using a checklist. Results: Seventy-seven original reports documented 95 cases (including 13 subjects ≤18 years of age). Completeness of reporting was satisfactory in 33, good in 35, and excellent in 27 cases. Propofol-associated green urine discoloration was observed in 54 patients. In most instances (n = 21, 39%), propofol was given for ≥24 h. Sometimes, however, the urine discoloration developed after propofol for ≤3 h (n = 12, 22%). Propofol-associated urine discoloration was usually observed during the administration of this agent, but it was at times (n = 11) first recognized ≥3 h after propofol discontinuation. The duration of green urine discoloration was usually ≤24 h after stopping propofol. Propofol-associated green urine discoloration was never associated with worsening kidney function. A pink-cloudy urine discoloration was observed in 32 subjects with an acidic urine pH and increased uric acid excretion given propofol for ≤24 h. A stage I acute kidney injury was observed in 2 cases (6.3%) of propofol-associated pink-cloudy urine discoloration. Nine cases of non-urinary green discoloration were observed: hair (n = 4), breast milk (n = 1), liver (n = 1), stool (n = 1). Conclusion: Propofol is sometimes associated with a green (benign) or pink-cloudy (occasionally associated with mild acute kidney injury) urine discoloration. Background: Valproic acid is prescribed for epilepsy and as prophylaxis for bipolar disorder and migraine headaches. It has also been implicated as a cause of a kidney tubular injury. Methods: We undertook a review of the literature to characterize the biochemical and histopathological features of the overt kidney tubular injury and to evaluate the possible existence of a pauci-symptomatic injury. The pre-registered review (CRD42022360357) was performed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology. Searches were conducted in Excerpta Medica, the National Library of Medicine, and Web of Science. The gray literature was also considered. Results: For the final analysis, we retained 36 articles: 28 case reports documented 48 individuals with epilepsy on valproic acid for 7 months or more and presenting with features consistent with an overt kidney tubular injury. The following disturbances were noted: hypophosphatemia (N = 46), normoglycemic glycosuria (N = 46), total proteinuria (N = 45), metabolic acidosis (N = 36), hypouricemia (N = 27), tubular proteinuria (N = 27), hypokalemia (N = 23), and hypocalcemia (N = 8). A biopsy, obtained in six cases, disclosed altered proximal tubular cells with giant and dysmorphic mitochondria. Eight case series addressed the existence of a pauci- or even asymptomatic kidney injury. In the reported 285 subjects on valproic acid for 7 months or more, an isolated tubular proteinuria, mostly N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase, was often noted. Conclusions: Valproic acid may induce an overt kidney tubular injury, which is associated with a proximal tubular mitochondrial toxicity. Transmembrane semaphorins are signaling molecules, controlling axonal wiring and embryo development, which are increasingly implicated in human diseases. Semaphorin 6C (Sema6C) is a poorly understood family member and its functional role is still unclear. Upon targeting Sema6C expression in a range of cancer cells, we observed dramatic growth suppression, decreased ERK phosphorylation, upregulation of cell cycle inhibitor proteins p21, p27 and p53, and the onset of cell senescence, associated with activation of autophagy. These data are consistent with a fundamental requirement for Sema6C to support viability and growth in cancer cells. Mechanistically, we unveiled a novel signaling pathway elicited by Sema6C, and dependent on its intracellular domain, mediated by tyrosine kinases c-Abl and Focal Adhesion Kinase (FAK). Sema6C was found in complex with c-Abl, and induced its phosphorylation, which in turn led to FAK activation, independent of cell–matrix adhesion. Sema6C-induced FAK activity was furthermore responsible for increased nuclear localization of YAP transcriptional regulator. Moreover, Sema6C conferred YAP signaling-dependent long-term cancer cell survival upon nutrient deprivation. In conclusion, our findings demonstrate that Sema6C elicits a cancer promoting-signaling pathway sustaining cell viability and self-renewal, independent of growth factors and nutrients availability. Background: Unfounded concerns regarding fever are increasingly observed among nurses worldwide. However, no study has so far explored the preferred approach towards pediatric fever among nursing students. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the attitude towards pediatric fever among final-year nursing students. Methods: Between February and June 2022, final-year nursing students of 5 Italian university hospitals were asked to answer an online survey on their approach to fever in children. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were utilized. Multiple regression models were employed to explore the existence of moderators on fever conceptions. Results: The survey was filled in by 121 nursing students (response rate 50%). Although most students (98%) do not consider discomfort to treat fever in children, only a minority would administer a second dose of the same antipyretic in nonresponsive cases (5.8%) or would alternate antipyretic drugs (13%). Most students would use physical methods to decrease fever (84%) and do not think that fever has mainly beneficial effects in children (72%). The own know-how adequacy on fever was inversely associated (OR 0.33, 95% CI 0.13–0.81) with the beliefs that high fever might lead to brain damage. No further predictive variable was significantly associated with the concern that fever might be associated with brain damage, the advice of physical methods use, and the assumption that fever has mostly positive effects. Discussion: This study shows for the first time that misconceptions and inappropriate attitudes towards fever in children are common among final-year nursing students. Background: The typical presentation of Epstein–Barr virus infectious mononucleosis includes fever, pharyngitis, measles-like rash, jaundice, and enlarged lymph nodes, liver, or spleen. A painless bilateral swelling of the upper eyelid, sometimes with drooping of the lateral aspect, may also occur. This sign, referred to as Hoagland sign, is not or only marginally mentioned in reviews and textbooks. Methods: Between 2019 and 2021, two of us evaluated all subjects with a positive acute Epstein–Barr virus serology for the typical signs of mononucleosis and for the possible existence of the Hoagland sign. Results: During the mentioned period, the diagnosis of mononucleosis was made in 26 (14 females and 12 males) subjects aged from 9.0 to 33 years. The initial presentation included fever in 24, enlarged cervical lymph nodes in 23, pharyngitis in 21, a palpable liver in 7, a palpable spleen in 7, jaundice in 2, and a measles-like rash in 2 cases. The Hoagland sign was noted in 14 cases. Patients with and without Hoagland sign did not significantly differ with respect to age and sex. Conclusions: The Hoagland sign is an easily identifiable clinical sign that is common and likely helpful early in the course of Epstein–Barr virus infectious mononucleosis. Various studies have sought to understand factors affecting low university retention rates of indigenous students. However, little is known about students who successfully complete undergraduate programs in STEM fields. This investigation, utilizing the life history approach, analyzed academic trajectories of 11 Mapuche graduates or near-graduates from such programs in south-central Chile. The analysis showed that students who were successful in obtaining degrees had experienced early participation in communities that encouraged an academic culture. These were constituted by their families, teachers, and friends, and participation occurred throughout their lives as they successfully negotiated their identities as indigenous and academically talented students.
