Background: Formaldehyde (FA) and oxytetracycline (OTC) are the chemicals commonly used in aquaculture to prevent or treat fish diseases due to protozoa, parasites, and bacteria. Aim: The goal of the present study is to assess the liver injury and oxidative stress induced by exposure of sea bass (Dicentrarchuslabrax L) to therapeutic doses of FA (200 ml.m-3) and OTC (40 g.m-3) under the same conditions being applied in intensive aquaculture systems in Tunisia. Methods: The liver histopathological survey was achieved after 5 and 10 days of exposure to FA, OTC separately or mixed. In parallel, liver catalase activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured to assess oxidative stress. Results: Results showed that treatment with FA and OTC used alone or in combinations induced liver damage as measured by sinusoid dilatation, intensive vacuolization, blood congestion, and focal necrosis. Significant elevation in catalyze activity and MDA levels were also observed in liver homogenates by the treatment (p ≤ 005). This study aimed to improve the effects on the physical, textural, and rheological characteristics of cake supplied with Ziziphus jujuba fruit powder at rates of 0%, 3%, 5%, and 10%. The Physicochemical and antioxidant as well as the antibacterial activity and sensory qualities of Z. jujuba fruits were also investigated. The highest levels reached the values of 245.15 mg GAE/g DW (phenol) and 180.23 mg RE/g DW (flavonoids). Pulp extracts were also subjected to HPLC analysis in order to identify and quantify the sugar composition. This technique allowed us to identify Mahdia as the richest provenance especially in glucose (136.51%) and sucrose (113.28%) contents. The antioxidant activities investigated using DPPH assay decreased slightly from 175 μg/mL (Sfax) to 55 μg/mL (Mahdia). Furthermore, the antibacterial activity indicated that the S. aureus was the most inhibited especially by Sfax powder extracts (from 12 to 20 mm). Our results showed that the incorporation of Z. jujuba powder ameliorated the physicochemical and rheological characteristics (humidity, gluten yield, tenacity, falling time, and configuration) of the dough. Sensory analysis showed that consumer scores were increased with the increasing supplementation powder levels. Highest scores attributed to the cake supplied with 3% jujube powder collected from Mahdia provenance and confirmed that Ziziphus fruit could be advised a part of our diet. The interest in and enthusiasm for shifting food systems to community-based and local trajectories have increased exponentially over the past decade. Part of the appeal of community-based local food systems is their potential to secure access to healthy food for local communities, expand sustainable farming practices, promote local food economies, and advance environmental and food justice. Interactions and collaborations within the spectrum of the food system's stakeholders--from farmers to local officials and organizations to local businesses and residents--are the cornerstone for effective food systems tailored to their community's needs. An increasing number of food system studies have applied stakeholder assessment approaches to map out complex situations among multiple stakeholder groups with different values and viewpoints regarding food system change. However, despite being an essential and influential political unit to target, counties have received very little attention in food system studies, as researchers and practitioners often focus on the federal and state levels of intervention to design food policies. This study examined the food system in Will County, Illinois, by applying the advocacy coalition framework and using a qualitative, semi-structured survey to engage a diverse set of stakeholders. The answers to the survey questions offered insights into three overlapping and divergent Will County stakeholder viewpoints (Pragmatic, Environmental and Food Justice Advocate, and Visionary), with the intent of informing and enacting food system transformation at the county level. The discussion within this paper focuses on coalition-building and collaboration between formal and informal groups to empower local communities to develop a distinctive food system identity that promotes community support, collaborative networks, and food justice at the county level. Ceratonia siliqua L. pods have been classically used in Mediterranean folk medicine as a potential source of natural antibacterial and antioxidant agents. The in vitro antiradical, immunostimulant, antibacterial and cytotoxic properties, as well as phytochemical composition of the ethanolic and aqueous extracts obtained from carob pods harvested at three ripening stages were assessed. Fructose, glucose, and sucrose, as quantified in both extracts, showed varied yields according to the ripening stage and solvent type. Likewise, significant differences were shown in bioactive compounds content depending on extraction solvent and ripening stage. Moreover, gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.) leucocyte viability and functions were not altered after being incubated for 24 h with the extracts of carob pods. On the other hand, the ethanolic extracts (0.75 and 1 mg mL−1), exhibited an interesting cytotoxic effect on a tumoricidal fish cell line (PLHC-1 cell). Besides, the ethanolic extract (1 mg mL−1) displayed a moderate bactericidal activity against different examined bacteria. Photobacterium damselae was found to be the most sensitive to different carob pod extracts, except for the aqueous extract obtained from ripened pods. While Vibrio harveyi and Vibrio anguillarum exhibited a strong resistance against the aqueous extracts. Staphylococcus aureus is a common pathogen causing hospital infections. The increasing rate of healthcare-associated infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in developing countries has led to many public health problems. This study aimed to investigate the molecular epidemiology as well as the antibiotic resistance pattern of clinical isolates of MRSA from Southern Iran. A total of 135 S. aureus isolates were collected from the patients referred to three hospitals in South Iran. The phenotypic and genotypic diagnosis of MRSA isolates was performed by disk diffusion and PCR methods, respectively. The antibiotic resistance pattern for MRSA isolates was performed using Kirby–Bauer method. The molecular epidemiology of isolates was performed by MLST, Spa typing and SCC mec typing. From 135 S. aureus isolates, 50 (37%) MRSA strains were detected from which two different sequence types including ST239 and ST605 were identified. SCC mec type III was the most common profile (50%) and t030 was the predominant spa type (48%) among the strains. The MRSA isolates had the highest resistance to penicillin (100%), tetracycline (88%), levofloxacin (86%), ciprofloxacin (84%), erythromycin (82%), gentamicin (80%), and clindamycin (78%). The results of this study show that the most common genetic type among the MRSA isolates was ST239-SCC mec III/t030. The rapid and timely detection of MRSA and the administration of appropriate antibiotics according to the published antibiotic resistance patterns are essential. Furthermore, the continuous and nationwide MRSA surveillance studies are necessary to investigate clonal distribution and spreading of MRSA from community to hospitals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dams represent large semi-closed reservoirs of pesticides and various organic and inorganic pollutants from agricultural and human activities, and their monitoring should receive special attention. This study evaluated the environmental health status of Bir Mcherga dam using zooplankton species. The dam has a capacity of 130 Mm3 and its waters are used for irrigation, water drinking supply, and fishery. Copepods and cladocerans (crustaceans) were collected in situ monthly between October and August 2012. Oxidative stress (CAT, MDA), neurotoxicity (AChE), and genotoxicity (micronucleus test) biomarkers were analyzed in two zooplankton species: Acanthocyclops robustus and Diaphanosoma mongolianum. High values of cells with a micronucleus were observed during summer. AChE activities were inhibited during early winter and summer. The high seasonal variability of CAT and MDA levels indicates that zooplankton is continuously exposed to different oxidative stresses. These results suggest that there is an obvious and continuous multi-faceted stress in Bir Mcherga reservoir and, consequently, an urgent monitoring of freshwater environments in Tunisia is needed, particularly those intended for human consumption and irrigation. The synthesis and metal-ion complexation properties of two new derivatives of 1,3-di(carboxymethyl)-p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene, bis(2-thienylmethylamide) 3 and bis(furanylmethylamide) 4, have been studied using UV/Vis spectrophotometry and, in some cases, 1H-NMR spectroscopy. The cations examined are alkali metals (Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+ and Cs+), alkaline earth metals (Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+ and Ba2+), heavy metals (Ag+, Cd2+, Hg2+ and Pb2+), and lanthanides (La3+, Nd3+, Eu3+, Gd3+ and Yb3+). This article is devoted to the modeling, performance evaluation and robust control of the railway transport network in Sahel Tunisia. The regular increase in the number of passengers makes the management of transportation systems more and more complex. Railway transport requires specific needs. Indeed, many decision and optimization problems occur from the planning phase to the implementation phase. Railway transport networks can be considered as discrete event systems with time constraints. The time factor is a critical parameter, since it includes schedules to be respected in order to avoid overlaps, delays and collisions between trains. The uncertainties affect the service and the availability of transportation resources and, consequently, the transport scheduling plan. Petri nets have been recognized as powerful modeling and analysis tools for discrete event systems with time constraints. Consequently, they are suitable for railway transport systems. In this article, stochastic P-time Petri nets are used for the railway transport networks in Sahel Tunisia. A global model is first detailed. Then, this model is used to analyze the network traffic and evaluate the performance of the system. Robustness again disturbances is introduced and a control strategy is developed to reduce the consequences of the disturbances in order to maintain the expected schedule. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present work aims to study the constitutive models' influence on the reverse deep drawing simulation of cylindrical cups. Several constitutive laws were considered to predict the combined effects of anisotropy as well as the changes in strain path direction of the stainless steel. To this end, a number of models were used, worth mentioning among which are the isotropic with nonlinear kinematic hardening laws, along with the isotropic von Mises and anisotropic Hill'48 yield criteria. For the models' parameters identification, uniaxial tensile and shear tests at several orientations to the rolling direction as well as reversed shear tests were carried out. Then, a subsequent comparison between experimental data and numerical simulations of reverse deep drawing tests were performed, using the finite element code Abaqus/Explicit. On the basis of the major reached results, it has been found that for the first stage, whatever the yield criteria used and for all the hardening models, the numerical punch-force evolution correlates well with the experimental one. For the second stage, the punch-force evolution was found to be remarkably more influenced by the yield criteria than by the kinematic laws. Tunisia water resources are limited. The country currently has 29 large dams, more than 1000 hill lakes, and 220 small dams which are essential for economic and social development given their contribution to irrigation, drinking water consumption, flooding protection, production of electrical energy, groundwater recharge, and industrial uses. Given the scarcity of these resources, it is crucial to be able to ensure the quality of freshwater environments, particularly those intended for human consumption. In this study, we meant to assess the health status of various freshwater ecosystems in different regions of Tunisia (north and center west) in order to detect genotoxic components in sediments and their potential effect on zooplankton (cladocerans). Sediment and cladoceran species were collected from dams, ponds, and temporary rivers in Tunisia. For each collection site, micronucleus (MN) assay was performed, in triplicates, using a pool of ten specimens of the same cladoceran species. MN occurrence in cladocerans varied from one site to another and MN frequencies varied between 0.67 and 22‰, suggesting the presence of genotoxic substances in certain sites. Sediment genotoxicity and mutagenicity were assessed using the SOS Chromotest and the Ames test. Sediment results showed that genotoxicity varies from one site to another displaying a quantitative and a qualitative variation of pollutant among the sites. These results suggest an urgent need for continuous monitoring of freshwater environments in Tunisia, particularly those intended for drinking water. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vegetative disorders similar to those associated with the presence of ‘Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum’ (CaLsol) were observed in carrot plants in Kairouan, Tunisia from 2014 to 2016. Symptoms including leaf curling, yellowing, bronze and purplish discoloration, stunting of plants and roots, and proliferation of secondary roots, affected 20 to 40% of the carrots in some plots. In order to determine if these symptoms were associated with the presence of CaLsol, and/or ‘Ca. Phytoplasma spp.’ and/or Spiroplasma citri, real-time PCR analyses were conducted using specific primers for these pathogens. CaLsol was detected for the first time in Tunisia and for the first time its haplotypes D and E were detected co-infecting a carrot plant. Furthermore, three samples of carrot seed produced in Kairouan tested positive for the haplotype D, showing a high percentage (35 to 63%) of viable bacterial cells after treatment with propidium monoazide. However, all the tests were negative for ‘Ca. Phytoplasma’ spp. as well as for S. citri. The results highlight that several CaLsol haplotypes are emerging carrot pathogens in new areas. Data are limited in developing countries regarding the clinicopathologic features and response to therapy of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in the era of imatinib (IM). The objective of this study is to report on the clinicoepidemiologic features of CML in Tunisia, to evaluate the long-term outcome of patients in chronic (CP) or accelerated phase (AP) treated with IM 400 mg daily as frontline therapy, and to determine imatinib's efficacy and safety. From October 2002 to December 2014, 410 CML patients were treated with IM in six Tunisian departments of hematology. Response (hematologic, cytogenetic, and molecular responses) and outcome-overall survival (OS), event-free survival (EFS), and progression-free survival (PFS)-were evaluated. The following prognostic factors were analyzed for their impact on the European leukemia net (ELN) response, OS, EFS, and PFS at 5 years: age, sex, leukocyte count, Sokal score, European Treatment and Outcome Study (EUTOS) score, CML phase, time to starting IM, and impact of adverse events. The median age was 45 years (3-85 years). Two hundred ten (51.2%) patients were male. Splenomegaly was present in 322 of the 410 (79%). Additional cytogenetic abnormalities were encountered in 25 (6.3%) patients. At diagnosis, 379 (92.4%) patients were in CP, 31 (7.6%) were in AP. The Sokal risk was low in 87 (22.5%), intermediate in 138 (35.7%), and high in 164 patients (41.9%). The EUTOS risk was low in 217 (74%), and high in 77 (26%) patients. The rates of cumulative complete cytogenetic response (CCyR), major molecular response (MMR), and molecular response 4/5 log (MR4.5) in CP/AP-CML patients were 72, 68.4, and 46.4%, respectively. The median time to reach CCyR, MMR, and MR4.5 was 6 months (3-51), 18 months (3-72), and 24 months (3-100), respectively. According to the ELN criteria, optimal, suboptimal response, and failure were noted in 206 (51.8%), 61 (15.3%), and 125 (31.4%) patients, respectively. Five-year event-free survival (EFS), progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) were 81, 90, and 90%, respectively. By multivariate analysis, AP, high EUTOS risk, and baseline WBC ≥ 150G/l remained independent predictive factors of non-optimal response to IM. The adverse events (AE) of IM were moderate and tolerable. With the caveats that the monitoring of the disease was not optimal, response rates were similar to those reported in previous studies. It is clear to us that improvements should be made in treatment of AP-CML and high Sokal risk group of CP-CML. The frontline use of second-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) is expected to improve the results of the first-line treatment of these high-risk Tunisian patients, but cost and accessibility of this therapy remain the problems in developing countries. In this study, natural bentonite was prepared and tested for the removal of diazo dye through the adsorption process. Investigated biosorbent was characterized using XRD, N2 sorption, XRF, total surface area using methylene blue method and TEM techniques. The effect of major parameters, such as initial dye concentration, adsorbent dosage, pH, contact time and temperature were investigated and discussed. Results show that studied bentonite after purification exhibited high adsorption capacity toward acid dyes. Maximum adsorption of Congo red dye(CR)was achieved between pH 4 and 5. Kinetic study revealed that the adsorption profile is well fitted by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and chemisorption process was proposed. Isotherm data were investigated according to Langmuir and Freundlich equations. Thermodynamic study showed the spontaneous nature of adsorption with endothermic process. Removal of lead heavy metal was investigated by adsorption into Congo red loaded purified bentonite and results show a high % removal (98.83 %). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sixteen intestinal helminth species were recovered from 271 necropsied stray dogs during a survey undertaken in Raoued and Soukra, two northeastern rural regions of Tunisia. Recorded parasites included trematodes (Brachylaemus sp., Phagicola italica, Heterophyes heterophyes), cestodes (Echinococcus granulosus, Dipylidium caninum, Diplopylidium noelleri, Mesocestoides lineatus, Mesocestoides litteratus, Taenia hydatigena, Taenia pisiformis, Taenia multiceps), nematodes (Toxocara canis, Ancylostoma caninum, Uncinaria stenocephala, Trichuris vulpis) and one acanthocephalan Macracanthorhynchus hirudinaceus. This is the first record of Brachylaemus sp., P. italica, H. heterophyes, D. noelleri and M. hirudinaceus in dogs from Tunisia. Echinococcus granulosus was found in 5.16% of dogs with a higher intensity of infection recorded in younger animals (303 worms/infected dog). Molecular analysis confirmed E. granulosus sensu stricto as the cause of canine echinococcosis. This epidemiological study investigating the status of intestinal helminths of dogs recorded a prevalence of 98.89% and a mean intensity of 87.62 worms per infected dog and confirmed the infection of 95.14% of dogs with helminths of potential zoonotic concern. Results of this study emphasize the need to interrupt parasite transmission using preventive approaches in zoonoses control programmes mainly against cystic echinococcosis, as well as reducing transmission to other animals by regular dog dosing treatments and proper management of dog populations. The lesser Egyptian jerboa Jaculus jaculus, is a member of the subfamily Dipodinae, known to have a number of subspecies. Previous studies of J. jaculus from North Africa found various morphological forms of unknown taxonomic status, which are frequently grouped into two taxa: J. jaculus and J. deserti. We assessed the taxonomic status of this taxon in Tunisia using allozymic (phylogenetic analysis of 23 genetic loci encoding 16 enzymatic proteins) and morphological (multivariate analysis of 13 craniodental characters) analyses of 136 J. jaculus specimens collected from seven localities within its distribution range. Allozymic analysis clearly indicated the existence of two distinct groups of J. jaculus, with a mean genetic distance (D) value of 0.99 and FST=0.52. Individuals within the two groups did not show any obvious geographical structuration, even within the Matmata locality which represents the meeting point for the two groups where they were found in sympatry. Additionally, morphometric analysis of 13 craniodental characters was clearly separated the two groups. These results were obtained over a very restricted area of the total distribution of J. jaculus and strongly suggest the occurrence of two separate and often sympatric species within the currently accepted J. jaculus in Tunisia: J. jaculus and J. deserti [Current Zoology 56 (4): 421-431, 2010]. The moon jelly Aurelia aurita is one of the most common and widespread species of scyphomedusa in the Mediterranean Sea. In all, 18 allozyme loci were studied to investigate the genetic variation and population structure of 11 A. aurita populations from the Tunisian coast. Polymorphism was detected at 14 loci across the sampling localities. Gene frequency differences rather than alternative fixation of alleles characterised the collecting sites. The mean number of alleles per locus ranged from 1.89 to 2.17 (average 2.02), and the mean values of observed (Ho) and expected (He) heterozygosities ranged from 0.20 to 0.36 and from 0.32 to 0.37 respectively. Five out of 14 polymorphic loci were out of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (H-WE). Likewise, the multilocus tests showed deviation from H-WE in six populations. These populations apparently showed heterozygote deficiency, whereas the average heterozygosity for the remaining ones is quite similar to the expected values. Despite extensive sampling across a microgeographical scale and genotyping efforts, the populations of A. aurita under study showed an absence of genetic differentiation under the background of high gene flow (mean FST = 0.01, p < 0.05) and higher value of Nem, suggesting that A. aurita is genetically homogeneous throughout the study area.
