Background: Encapsulation of siRNA fragments inside liposome vesicles has emerged as an effective method for delivering siRNAs in vitro and in vivo. However, the liposome's fluid-phospholipid bilayer of liposomes allows siRNA fragments to diffuse out of the liposome, decreasing the dose concentration and therefore the effectiveness of the carrier. We have previously reported that β-cyclodextrins formulated in liposomes help increase the stability of siRNAs in cell culture medium. Here, we continued that study to include α, γ, methyl-β-cyclodextrins and β-cyclodextrin-modified gold and selenium nanoparticles. Methods: We used Isothermal Titration Calorimetry to study the binding thermodynamics of siRNAs to the cyclodextrin-modified nanoparticles and to screen for the best adamantane derivative to modify the siRNA fragments, and we used gel electrophoresis to study the stabilization effect of siRNA by cyclodextrins and the nanoparticles. Results: We found that only β- and methyl-β-cyclodextrins increased siRNA serum stability. Cyclodextrin-modified selenium nanoparticles also stabilize siRNA fragments in serum, and siRNAs chemically modified with an adamantane moiety (which forms inclusion complexes with the cyclodextrin-modified-nanoparticles) show a strong stabilization effect. Conclusions: β-cyclodextrins are good additives to stabilize siRNA in cell culture medium, and the thermodynamic data we generated of the interaction between cyclodextrins and adamantane analogs (widely used in drug delivery studies), should serve as a guide for future studies where cyclodextrins are sought for the delivery and solvation of small organic molecules. To test for rates of inpatient palliative care (IPC) in metastatic testicular cancer patients receiving critical care therapy (CCT). Within the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) database (2008–2019), we tabulated IPC rates in metastatic testicular cancer patients receiving CCT, namely invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV), percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube (PEG), dialysis for acute kidney failure (AKF), total parenteral nutrition (TPN) or tracheostomy. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression models addressing IPC were fitted. Of 420 metastatic testicular cancer patients undergoing CCT, 70 (17%) received IPC. Between 2008 and 2019, the rates of IPC among metastatic testicular cancer patients undergoing CCT increased from 5 to 19%, with the highest rate of 30% in 2018 (EAPC: + 9.5%; 95% CI + 4.7 to + 15.2%; p = 0.005). IPC patients were older (35 vs. 31 years, p = 0.01), more frequently had do not resuscitate (DNR) status (34 vs. 4%, p < 0.001), more frequently exhibited brain metastases (29 vs. 17%, p = 0.03), were more frequently treated with IMV (76 vs. 53%, p < 0.001) and exhibited higher rate of inpatient mortality (74 vs. 29%, p < 0.001). In multivariable analyses, DNR status (OR 10.23, p < 0.001) and African American race/ethnicity (OR 4.69, p = 0.003) were identified as independent predictors of higher IPC use. We observed a significant increase in rates of IPC use in metastatic testicular cancer patients receiving CCT, rising from 5 to 19% between 2008 and 2019. However, this rates remain lower compared to metastatic lung cancer patients, indicating the need for further awareness among clinicians treating metastatic testicular cancer. The increase in IPC rates for metastatic testicular cancer patients receiving CCT indicates a need for ongoing education and awareness among healthcare providers. Introduction: Regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs) aim to replace damaged dental structures and regenerate the dentin-pulp complex. Initially focused on teeth with incomplete root formation, recent research shows promise for necrotic teeth with complete root formation. Methodology: This review, following PRISMA guidelines and registered in PROSPERO, included clinical studies on regenerative endodontic therapy in necrotic human teeth with complete root formation. Searches in PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library identified 10 studies meeting the criteria. Results: The studies showed variable regenerative endodontic protocols and materials, with success rates ranging from 60 to 100%. Most studies reported favorable outcomes, such as symptom resolution and bone healing. Discussion: Regenerative endodontic therapy for necrotic teeth with complete root formation shows high success rates, but the variability in protocols calls for standardized guidelines and further high-quality trials. Conclusion: Regenerative endodontic therapy is a promising alternative to conventional treatments for necrotic teeth with complete root formation, with demonstrated potential for restoring pulp vitality.Future research should optimize protocols and materials for consistent success. The ozone air quality standard is regularly surpassed in the Los Angeles air basin, and efforts to mitigate ozone production have targeted emissions of precursor volatile organic compounds (VOCs), especially from mobile sources. In order to assess how VOC concentrations, emissions, and chemistry have changed over the past decade, VOCs were measured in this study using a Vocus‐2R proton‐transfer reaction time‐of‐flight mass spectrometer in Pasadena, California, downwind of Los Angeles, in summer 2022. Relative to 2010, ambient concentrations of aromatic hydrocarbons have declined at a similar rate as carbon monoxide, suggesting reduced overall emissions from mobile sources. However, the ambient concentrations of oxygenated VOCs have remained similar or increased, suggesting a greater relative importance of oxidation products and other emission sources, such as volatile chemical products whose emissions are largely unregulated. Relative to 2010, the range of measured VOCs was expanded, including higher aromatics and additional volatile chemical products, allowing a better understanding of a wider range of emission sources. Emission ratios relative to carbon monoxide were estimated and compared with 2010 emission ratios. Average measured ozone concentrations were generally comparable between 2022 and 2010; however, at the same temperature, daytime ozone concentrations were lower in 2022 than 2010. Faster photochemistry was observed in 2022, with average hydroxyl radical exposure being ∼68% higher during midday (statistically significant at 95% confidence), although this difference reduces to ∼35% when comparing observations at ambient temperatures of 25–30°C only. Future trends in temperature are important in predicting ozone production. Plain Language Summary: Gas‐phase organic molecules are emitted from many sources including vegetation, cars, cooking, industries, and chemical products (paints, inks, pesticides, deodorant, shampoo, etc.), among others. These emissions oxidize in the atmosphere and contribute to the formation of particles and ozone, which are harmful to human health. To improve air quality, the behavior of these molecules in the atmosphere must be understood, and their sources must be identified, before effective emission reduction policies can be established. In summer 2022, we measured atmospheric concentrations of such molecules in Pasadena, California, downwind of Los Angeles, California, to investigate fresh, unreacted emissions as well as aged, oxidized emissions. Compared to similar measurements made in 2010, emissions from vehicle sources appear to have declined while chemical products have become relatively more important. Atmospheric oxidation of these emissions also appears to have increased relative to 2010, in part due to higher average temperatures and related meteorology. Despite reduced emissions from vehicles, unregulated emissions from chemical products and faster oxidation yielded similar concentrations of secondary products such as ozone. Future air quality improvements will likely require further emission reductions, particularly for chemical products, and such improvements may be offset by rising temperatures due to climate change. Objective: This study, derived from the phase 3 SAFE trial (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT2236806), explores subclinical cardiac damage in breast cancer patients receiving anthracycline-based chemotherapy and left-sided breast radiation therapy (RT). Materials and Methods: Eligible patients were randomized to a cardioprotective pharmacological therapy (bisoprolol, ramipril, or both) or placebo, with cardiac surveillance at multiple time-point using standard and 3-dimensional echocardiography. Dosimetric parameters were analysed, including mean heart dose (MHD) and various metrics for heart substructures, employing advanced contouring techniques and auto-contouring software. Results: In the analysis of left-sided breast RT patients, the study encompassed 39 out of 46 irradiated individuals, focusing on GLS and 3D-LVEF outcomes with ≥ 10% worsening, defined as subclinical heart damage. Distinct RT schedules were used, with placebo exhibiting the highest ≥ 10% worsening (36.4%). In terms of treatment arms, bisoprolol exhibited 11.1% worsening, while ramipril 16.7% and bisoprolol + ramipril 25%. For patients with no subclinical damage, the mean MHD was 1.5 Gy; for patients with subclinical heart damage, the mean MHD was 1.6 Gy (p = 0.94). Dosimetric parameters related to heart and heart substructures (left anterior descending artery, right and left atrium, right and left ventricle) showed no statistically significant differences between patients with and without subclinical damage. Conclusion: Our results emphasize the crucial role of cardioprotective measures in mitigating adverse effects, highlighting RT as having negligible influence on cardiac performance. Importance: Pediatric patients with complex medical problems benefit from pediatric sub-specialty care; however, a significant proportion of children live greater than 80 mi. away from pediatric sub-specialty care. Objective: To identify current knowledge gaps and outline concrete next steps to make progress on issues that have persistently challenged the pediatric nephrology workforce. Evidence review: Workforce Summit 2.0 employed the round table format and methodology for consensus building using adapted Delphi principles. Content domains were identified via input from the ASPN Workforce Committee, the ASPN's 2023 Strategic Plan survey, the ASPN's Pediatric Nephrology Division Directors survey, and ongoing feedback from ASPN members. Working groups met prior to the Summit to conduct an organized literature review and establish key questions to be addressed. The Summit was held in-person in November 2023. During the Summit, work groups presented their preliminary findings, and the at-large group developed the key action statements and future directions. Findings: A holistic appraisal of the effort required to cover inpatient and outpatient sub-specialty care will help define faculty effort and time distribution. Most pediatric nephrologists practice in academic settings, so work beyond clinical care including education, research, advocacy, and administrative/service tasks may form a substantial amount of a faculty member's time and effort. An academic relative value unit (RVU) may assist in creating a more inclusive assessment of their contributions to their academic practice. Pediatric sub-specialties, such as nephrology, contribute to the clinical mission and care of their institutions beyond their direct billable RVUs. Advocacy throughout the field of pediatrics is necessary in order for reimbursement of pediatric sub-specialist care to accurately reflect the time and effort required to address complex care needs. Flexible, individualized training pathways may improve recruitment into sub-specialty fields such as nephrology. Conclusions and relevance: The workforce crisis facing the pediatric nephrology field is echoed throughout many pediatric sub-specialties. Background: 11C-PBR28 positron emission tomography (PET), targeting the translocator protein, and paramagnetic rim lesions (PRL) have emerged as promising imaging markers of MS chronic inflammation. No consensus on which is the optimal marker exists. Objectives: To investigate the ability of 11C-PBR28 PET and PRL assessment to identify chronic inflammation in white matter (WM) MS lesions and their relation to neurological impairment. Methods: Based on 11C-PBR28 uptake, brain WM lesions from 30 MS patients were classified as PET active or inactive. The PRL presence was assessed on 7T phase reconstructions, T1/T2 ratio was calculated to measure WM microstructural integrity. Results: Less than half (44%) of non-PRL WM lesions were active on 11C-PBR28 imaging either throughout the lesion (whole active) or at its periphery. PET peripherally active lesions and PRL did not differ in T1/T2 ratio and 11C-PBR28 uptake. A positive correlation was observed between PRL and active PET lesion count. Whole active PET lesion volume was the strongest predictor (β = 0.97, p < 0.001) of increased Expanded Disability Status Scale scores. Conclusion: 11C-PBR28 imaging reveals more active WM lesions than 7T PRL assessment. Wearable strain sensors are widespread in many fields, including the biomedical field where they are used for their stretchability and ability to be applied to non-regular surfaces. The study of the propagation speed of the pressure wave generated by the heartbeat within vessels, i.e., the Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV), is of significant relevance in this field to assess arterial stiffness, a parameter commonly used for the early diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. In this context, arterial simulators are useful tools to study the relationship between the PWV and other hemodynamic quantities in vitro. This study aims to characterize novel strain sensors to assess their suitability within an arterial simulator capable of varying the stiffness of an arterial surrogate by varying the transmural pressure. Six sensors deposited on arterial surrogates by Aerosol Jet Printing technology were subjected to deformation through a load frame. The results show that the sensors were able to distinguish strains of 0.1%, the maximum strain was around 6–8%, and the fatigue strength depended strongly on the strain rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Osmotic demyelination syndrome (ODS) is a rare complication associated with rapid sodium changes, typically encountered in patients with severe hyponatremia. ODS in patients with normonatremia (ODSIN) is less recognized. We describe a patient with MRI‐detected ODSIN following neurotrauma and reviewed the relevant literature. We present a 57‐year‐old female with subdural hematoma following ground‐level fall. Her initial sodium was 140 mEq/L but over 2 days, rose 17 mEq/L, peaking at 157 mEq/L. On exam, unexplainable, unexpected left‐sided hemiplegia with weakness sparing her face were noted; ODS was suspected. MRI revealed central pontine T2 hyperintensity, T1 hypointensity, and FLAIR hyperintensity. Treatment included gradual lowering of sodium with normal saline and free water. She was discharged to a skilled nursing facility (SNF) with sodium 138 mEq/L and upon 4‐year follow‐up had moderate disability and required some assistance to support activities of daily living. Our literature search yielded 23 cases (22 normonatremic; 1 where normonatremia progressed to hypernatremia). Common signs/symptoms were hyperreflexia, dysarthria, and gait disturbance. Common comorbidities were alcoholism, dialysis, and renal disease/failure. Cranial MRI confirmed all cases, frequently revealing central pontine T2 and FLAIR hyperintensity and T1 hypointensity. Our review further characterizes the diverse etiologies, clinical course, and radiographic features of ODSIN. Clinicians should consider this diagnosis when neurological symptoms occur even in the setting of normonatremia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The surface elevation of the Greenland Ice Sheet is constantly changing due to the interplay between surface mass balance processes and ice dynamics, each exhibiting distinct spatiotemporal patterns. Here, we employ satellite and airborne altimetry data with fine spatial (1 km) and temporal (monthly) resolutions to document this spatiotemporal evolution from January 2003 to August 2023. To estimate elevation changes of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS), we utilize radar altimetry data from CryoSat-2 and EnviSat, laser altimetry data from the ICESat and ICESat-2, and laser altimetry data from NASA's Operation IceBridge Airborne Topographic Mapper. We produce continuous monthly ice surface elevation changes from January 2003 to August 2023 on a 1 km grid covering the entire GIS. We estimate cumulative ice loss of 4,352 Gt ± 315 Gt (12.1 ± 0.9 mm sea level equivalent) during this period, excluding peripheral glaciers. Between 2003 and 2023, the ice sheet land-terminating margin underwent a significant cumulative thinning of several meters. Ocean-terminating glaciers exhibited thinning between 20–40 m, with Jakobshavn Isbræ experiencing an exceptional thinning of nearly 70 m. This dataset of fine-resolution altimetry data in both space and time will support studies of ice mass loss and useful for GIS ice sheet modelling. To validate our monthly mass changes of the Greenland ice sheet, we use mass change from satellite gravimetry and mass change from the Input-Output method. After decades of war, Mozambique experienced sustained economic growth and poverty reduction from the mid-1990s. However, these positive dynamics started to revert from 2015. Meanwhile, inequality stagnated in the period 1996/97–2008/09, before markedly increasing afterwards. In this study, we analyse some of the most relevant indicators of inequality for Mozambique and their trends over the last 25 years. Using real per capita consumption as the main welfare aggregate, we look at various indicators of inequality, including the consumption distribution, percentiles and percentile ratios, growth incidence curves, Lorenz curves, and Gini indices. In addition, we discuss spatial inequality. Overall, we find that until 2014/15, consumption increased for the whole population, but it did so much more for richer households; conversely, in the last few years, consumption has reduced across the distribution, but the relative consumption-gap between better- and worse-off people has continued to increase. The circular bioeconomy is currently a promising model for repurposing natural sources; these sources include plants due to their abundance of bioactive compounds. This study evaluated the antimicrobial properties of a Chaetomorpha linum extract. Chaetomorpha linum is an invasive macroalga from the Orbetello Lagoon (Tuscany, Italy), which grows in nutrient-rich environments and has been forming extended mats since 2005. The biomass is mechanically harvested and treated as waste, consuming considerable manpower and financial resources. As a potential way to increase the value of such waste, this study found that C. linum extract (CLE) is a source of antimicrobial compounds. The phytochemical characterization of the extract revealed the predominant presence of palmitic acid, a fatty acid with known antimicrobial activity. Based on such findings, four bacterial species of high clinical relevance (Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli) were tested, revealing a notable antibacterial activity of the extract on Enterococcus faecalis (MIC, 32 μg/mL). Computational analyses identified a potential Enterococcus faecalis molecular target for palmitic acid, offering molecular insights on the interaction. This study presents a comprehensive in vitro and in silico approach for drug and target discovery studies by repurposing C. linum as a source of antimicrobial bioactive compounds. Aedes aegypti females are natural vectors of important arboviruses such as dengue, zika, and yellow fever. Mosquitoes activate innate immune response signaling pathways upon infection, as a resistance mechanism to fight pathogens and limit their propagation. Despite the beneficial effects of immune activation for insect vectors, phenotypic costs ultimately affect their fitness. However, the underlying mechanisms that mediate these fitness costs remain poorly understood. Given the high energy required to mount a proper immune response, we hypothesized that systemic activation of innate immunity would impair flight muscle mitochondrial function, compromising tissue energy demand and flight activity. Here, we investigated the dynamic effects of activation of innate immunity by intra‐thoracic zymosan injection on A. aegypti flight muscle mitochondrial metabolism. Zymosan injection significantly increased defensin A expression in fat bodies in a time‐dependent manner that compromised flight activity. Although oxidant levels in flight muscle were hardly altered, ATP‐linked respiratory rates driven by mitochondrial pyruvate+proline oxidation were significantly reduced at 24 h upon zymosan injection. Oxidative phosphorylation coupling was preserved regardless of innate immune response activation along 24 h. Importantly, rotenone‐sensitive respiration and complex I‐III activity were specifically reduced 24 h upon zymosan injection. Also, loss of complex I activity compromised ATP‐linked and maximal respiratory rates mediated by mitochondrial proline oxidation. Finally, the magnitude of innate immune response activation negatively correlated with respiratory rates, regardless of the metabolic states. Collectively, we demonstrate that activation of innate immunity is strongly associated with reduced flight muscle complex I activity with direct consequences to mitochondrial proline oxidation and flight activity. Remarkably, our results indicate a trade‐off between dispersal and immunity exists in an insect vector, underscoring the potential consequences of disrupted flight muscle mitochondrial energy metabolism to arbovirus transmission. Background: Disrupted 24-h sleep-wake and rest-activity cycles are known common features in Huntington's disease (HD) patients; however, critical periods during the 24-h cycle have been less studied. Objective: To analyze the differences between early-mid stage HD patients and healthy controls (HC) in sleep patterns and 24-h motor activity by using actigraphic monitoring. Methods: Twenty HD patients (13 females; mean age ± SD 56.45 ± 16.94) at early-mid stage of the disease and 20 HC were actigraphically monitored for a week. We applied the Functional Linear Modeling (FLM) to analyze motor activity from the actigraphic data. We analyzed parameters regarding both the time spent in bed and out of bed; get-up time (GUT); time in bed (TIB); midpoint of sleep (MS); sleep motor activity (SMA); sleep onset latency (SOL); total sleep time (TST); wake after sleep onset (WASO); sleep efficiency (SE); number and duration of awakenings (AWK); diurnal motor activity (DMA) and diurnal total sleep time (DTST). Results: Ten patients were in Stage I, 6 in Stage II and 4 in Stage III. HD patients presented lower SE and higher TIB, SOL, WASO, AWK and AWK > 5 min in comparison to HC. Moreover, higher motor activity was observed in patients with HD, in particular between 2:15 and 4:00 am, from around 40 min prior to bedtime until 20 min after bedtime, and from around 20 min prior to get-up time until 50 min after get-up time. (1) Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) accounts for 70% of dementia cases and with no effective pharmacological treatments, new rehabilitation methods are needed. Motor and cognitive activities and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) have shown promise in stabilizing and enhancing cognitive functions. Objective: we want to investigate the effects of tDCS combined with motor or cognitive activity on cognitive functions in AD patients. (2) Methods: Patients with mild or moderate AD were randomized between anodic tDCS groups (MotA or CogA) and sham tDCS groups (MotS or CogS). They received two weeks of treatment (45 min, five days/week), with the first 15 min using tDCS stimulation on the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Cognitive assessments were conducted pre-treatment (T0), post-treatment (T1), and one week after (T2). (3) Results: Twenty-three patients were included. Statistical analysis showed significant differences between anodic tDCS groups (MotA + CogA) and sham tDCS groups (MotS + CogS) with advantages for the first in improving global cognitive status (p = 0.042), selective attention (p = 0.012), and sustained attention (p = 0.012). Further analysis indicated no differences between the two anodic tDCS groups between T0 and T1. (4) Conclusions: combined anodal tDCS with motor or cognitive activity could improve global cognitive state and attention, slowing cognitive decline in AD patients. Introduction: Prostate-specific membrane antigen radioguided surgery (PSMA-RGS) might identify lymph node invasion (LNI) in prostate cancer (PCa) patients undergoing extended pelvic lymph node dissection (ePLND). The optimal target-to-background (TtB) ratio to define RGS positivity is still unknown. Materials & methods: Ad interim analyses which focused on 30 patients with available pathological information were conducted. All patients underwent preoperative PSMA positron emission tomography (PET). 99m-Technetium-PSMA imaging and surgery ([99mTc]Tc-PSMA-I&S) was administered the day before surgery. In vivo measurements were conducted using an intraoperative gamma probe. Performance characteristics and implications associated with different TtB ratios were assessed. Results: Overall, 9 (30%) patients had LNI, with 22 (13%) and 80 (11%) positive regions and lymph nodes, respectively. PSMA-RGS showed uptakes in 12 (40%) vs. 7 (23%) vs. 6 (20%) patients for a TtB ratio ≥ 2 vs. ≥ 3 vs. ≥ 4. At a per-region level, sensitivity, specificity and accuracy for a TtB ratio ≥ 2 vs. ≥ 3 vs. ≥ 4 were 72%, 88% and 87% vs. 54%, 98% and 92% vs. 36%, 99% and 91%. Performing ePLND only in patients with suspicious spots at PSMA PET (n = 7) would have spared 77% ePLNDs at the cost of missing 13% (n = 3) pN1 patients. A TtB ratio ≥ 2 at RGS identified 8 (24%) suspicious areas not detected by PSMA PET, of these 5 (63%) harbored LNI, with one pN1 patient (11%) that would have been missed by PSMA PET. Adoption of a TtB ratio ≥ 2 vs. ≥ 3 vs. ≥ 4, would have allowed to spare 18 (60%) vs. 23 (77%) vs. 24 (80%) ePLNDs missing 2 (11%) vs. 3 (13%) vs. 4 (17%) pN1 patients. Conclusions: PSMA-RGS using a TtB ratio ≥ 2 to identify suspicious nodes, could allow to spare > 50% ePLNDs and would identify additional pN1 patients compared to PSMA PET and higher TtB ratios. Background/Objectives: The impact of surgical resection versus non-resection on cancer-specific mortality (CSM) in soft tissue pelvic sarcoma remains largely unclear, particularly when considering histologic subtypes such as liposarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, and sarcoma NOS. The objective of the present study was to first report data regarding the association between surgical resection status and CSM in soft tissue pelvic sarcoma. Methods: Using data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database from 2000 to 2019, we identified 2491 patients diagnosed with pelvic soft tissue sarcoma. Cumulative incidence plots were used to illustrate CSM and other-cause mortality rates based on the histologic subtype and surgical resection status. Competing risk regression models were employed to assess whether surgical resection was an independent predictor of CSM in both non-metastatic and metastatic patients. Results: Among the 2491 patients with soft tissue pelvic sarcoma, liposarcoma was the most common subtype (41%), followed by leiomyosarcoma (39%) and sarcoma NOS (20%). Surgical resection rates were 92% for liposarcoma, 91% for leiomyosarcoma, and 58% for sarcoma NOS in non-metastatic patients, while for metastatic patients, the rates were 55%, 49%, and 23%, respectively. In non-metastatic patients who underwent surgical resection, five-year CSM rates by histologic subtype were 10% for liposarcoma, 32% for leiomyosarcoma, and 27% for sarcoma NOS. The multivariable competing risk regression analysis showed that surgical resection provided a protective effect across all histologic subtypes in non-metastatic patients (liposarcoma HR: 0.2, leiomyosarcoma HR: 0.5, sarcoma NOS HR: 0.4). In metastatic patients, surgical resection had a protective effect for those with leiomyosarcoma (HR: 0.6) but not for those with sarcoma NOS. An analysis for metastatic liposarcoma was not possible due to insufficient data. Conclusions: In non-metastatic soft tissue pelvic sarcoma, surgical resection may be linked to a reduction in CSM. Background: It is unknown whether 5‐year overall survival (OS) differs and to what extent between the American Joint Committee on Cancer stage III non‐seminoma testicular germ cell tumor (NS‐TGCT) patients and simulated age‐matched male population‐based controls, according to race/ethnicity groups. Methods: We identified newly diagnosed (2004–2014) stage III NS‐TGCT patients within the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results database 2004–2019. For each case, we simulated an age‐matched male control (Monte Carlo simulation), relying on Social Security Administration (SSA) Life Tables with 5 years of follow‐up. We compared OS rates between stage III NS‐TGCT patients and simulated age‐matched male population‐based controls, according to race/ethnicity groups (Caucasian, Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander and African American). Both, cancer‐specific mortality (CSM) and other‐cause mortality (OCM) were computed. Results: Of 2054 stage III NS‐TGCT patients, 60% were Caucasians versus 33% Hispanics versus 4% Asians/Pacific Islanders versus 3% African Americans. The 5‐year OS difference between stage III NS‐TGCT patients versus simulated age‐matched male population‐based controls was highest in Asians/Pacific Islanders (64 vs. 99%, Δ = 35%), followed by African Americans (66 vs. 97%, Δ = 31%), Hispanics (72 vs. 99%, Δ = 27%), and Caucasians (76 vs. 98%, Δ = 22%). The 5‐year CSM rate was highest in Asians/Pacific Islanders (32%), followed by African Americans (26%), Hispanics (25%), and Caucasians (20%). The 5‐year OCM rate was highest in African Americans (8%), followed by Caucasians (4%), Asians/Pacific Islanders (4%), and Hispanics (2%). Conclusion: Relative to SSA Life Tables, the highest 5‐year OS disadvantage applied to stage III NS‐TGCT Asian/Pacific Islander race/ethnicity group, followed by African American, Hispanic and Caucasian, in that order. Methods: Within the SEER database (2000–2019), we identified 1134 patients diagnosed with malignant SFTs. The distributions of patient demographics and tumor characteristics were tabulated. Cumulative incidence plots and competing risks analyses were used to estimate cancer-specific mortality (CSM) after adjustment for other-cause mortality. Results: Of 1134 SFT patients, 87% underwent surgical resection. Most of the tumors were in the chest (28%), central nervous system (22%), head and neck (11%), pelvis (11%), extremities (10%), abdomen (10%) and retroperitoneum (6%), in that order. Stage was distributed as follows: localized (42%) vs. locally advanced (35%) vs. metastatic (13%). In multivariable competing risks models, independent predictors of higher CSM were stage (locally advanced HR: 1.6; metastatic HR: 2.9), non-surgical management (HR: 3.6) and tumor size (9–15.9 cm HR: 1.6; ≥16 cm HR: 1.9). Conclusions: We validated the importance of stage and surgical resection as independent predictors of CSM in malignant SFTs. Background: The Lichtenstein open anterior approach with static flat meshes, the most popular inguinal hernia repair technique, has raised concerns regarding mesh fixation, defect patency, and poor quality biological response. To address these issues, the 3D dynamic ProFlor scaffold promoting a fixation-free hernia defect obliteration has been developed as an alternative. Methods: The results of open inguinal hernia repair with the ProFlor approach compared with those of the Lichtenstein repair were evaluated. Results: In a time frame of 24 months, two cohorts of patients were enrolled, 95 in the ProFlor group and 93 in the Lichtenstein group. ProFlor demonstrated superior outcomes compared to the Lichtenstein technique, with shorter procedure times, decreased intraoperative complications, and lower rates of postoperative complications. Additionally, ProFlor provided enhanced postoperative pain relief, a faster return to daily activities, and no long-term discomfort. No chronic pain was reported in the ProFlor group and 11.8% reported chronic pain in the Lichtenstein group. Conclusions: The results highlight the need to reevaluate the conventional Lichtenstein approach and align it with recent scientific progress. Companies and organizations involved in software development are stimulated and often obliged to consider procedures and technical solutions to guarantee data privacy and protection from the early phases of the software lifecycle. In addition, by default, personal data might be processed with the highest privacy protection level. These two requirements are Privacy by Design and Privacy by Default principles. Their importance has grown quickly in the last few years, as demonstrated by data protection regulations, like GDPR and PIPEDA, which include them as an important part of some of their articles. However, such regulations do not provide any practical or concrete indications of software requirements, and developers often lack adequate knowledge to understand the privacy prescriptions expressed in legal language. This study addresses these limitations by presenting a systematic and rigorous literature review that aims to answer the following research questions: (RQ1) How do Privacy-By-Design and Privacy-By-Default principles translate into software requirements? and (RQ2) How Privacy-By-Design and Privacy-By-Default principles integrate into a Human-Centred Design process? For RQ1, the analysis of the resulting publications led to identifying several software requirements and business processes organized along 8 data-oriented and process-oriented privacy design strategies. For RQ2, the analysis of the retrieved publications provided a comprehensive view of the HCI methodologies adopted to comply with privacy requirements identified current shortcomings, and proposed future research directions. The results have been distilled into an initial framework that may aid the development of software that must comply with such principles and aims to integrate them into an HCD process. The purpose of the work is to study by experimental analysis and finite element methods the mechanical response of a packaging, consisting of a corrugated cardboard container, used for the transport of fruit and vegetables. During the container design, three different configurations were selected which differ both in the choice of liner and in the type of wave. In particular, the type E, F and N microwaves were chosen. They are characterized by a lower amplitude than the high and medium waves commonly used in corrugated cardboard packaging, making it possible to reduce material consumption and, consequently, costs. In the initial phase of the study, experimental tests were performed to evaluate the mechanical strength of the liners. In addition, edge compression tests (ECTs) were performed to determine the stacking resistance of the structure. The break‐in resistance of the structures was analysed using a test conducted according to an internal standard, called strength packaging test (SPT). Subsequently, a parametric study was set up with the finite element method for the simulation of the mechanical behaviour of the three structures, using the homogenization technique. The comparison between the maximum total deformations, measured experimentally and calculated numerically, has highlighted the need to introduce corrective coefficients to improve the homogenization of the wave structure. In this way, it was possible to improve the matching of the results obtained on the structures simulated by the homogenization technique and those obtained on the corresponding real structures. We assume that a sufficiently large database is available, where a physical property of interest and a number of associated ruling primitive variables or observables are stored. We introduce and test two machine learning approaches to discover possible groups or combinations of primitive variables, regardless of data origin, being it numerical or experimental: the first approach is based on regression models, whereas the second on classification models. The variable group (here referred to as the new effective good variable) can be considered as successfully found when the physical property of interest is characterized by the following effective invariant behavior: in the first method, invariance of the group implies invariance of the property up to a given accuracy; in the other method, upon partition of the physical property values into two or more classes, invariance of the group implies invariance of the class. For the sake of illustration, the two methods are successfully applied to two popular empirical correlations describing the convective heat transfer phenomenon and to the Newton's law of universal gravitation. Background: Diagnostic classification of thyroid malignancy is primarily accomplished through examination of histomorphological features and may be substantiated and clarified by molecular data. Individual molecular drivers show relatively robust and specific associations with histological subtypes of thyroid malignancy, including BRAF sequence variants and kinase gene fusions in papillary thyroid carcinoma, predominantly RAS variants in follicular-patterned neoplasia, and additional "late" mutations affecting TERT promoter, TP53, and the PI3K/AKT/PTEN pathway in high-grade malignancies. Given the oncogenic role of FGFR, particularly FGFR1-3, the goal of this study was to explore the role of FGFR in thyroid carcinoma biology. Methods: We completed a multicenter retrospective observational study for thyroid carcinomas with pathogenic alterations in the FGFR gene family. We performed this study by querying the molecular data accumulated for thyroid carcinomas from each center. Results: Overall, 5030 sequenced thyroid malignancies were reviewed, yielding 17 tumors with FGFR alterations, including 11 where FGFR was the primary molecular driver and 6 where FGFR was a secondary pathogenic alteration, with a subset for which there was available clinical follow-up data. Of the 11 carcinomas with an FGFR driver, 9 were gene fusions involving FGFR2:VCL (4 tumors), TG::FGFR1 (3 tumors), FGFR2::CIT, and FGFR2::SHTN1, and the remaining 2 were driven by FGFR1 amplification. In the 6 tumors where a canonical driver of thyroid neoplasia was present (5 cases) or no clear primary driver was detected (1 case), sequencing detected secondary FGFR2 p.W290C, p.Y375C, and p.N549K, as well as FGFR1 p.N546K in the respective tyrosine kinase domains, some at subclonal variant allele frequencies. Conclusions: This study presents the first description of a collection of thyroid carcinomas grouped by primary driver alterations in FGFR, as well as a cohort of thyroid tumors with secondary alterations that potentially lead to tumor progression or resistance to targeted therapy. Given the availability of small molecular inhibitors targeting oncogenic FGFR, this study emphasizes the significant implications for patients from identification of FGFR alterations as they are currently under-recognized in the literature and, most importantly, have potential novel treatment options. Background: Abdominal tuberculosis comprises all forms of tuberculosis that involve the gastrointestinal tract. Controversies exist regarding the surgical approach and timing and type of intervention for complicated forms of abdominal tuberculosis. The aim of this systematic review is to define the rate of surgical treatment, the type of surgical procedures performed and the role of minimally invasive surgery in the management of abdominal tuberculosis. Methods: The literature in MEDLINE, Scopus and Google Scholar and forward and backward citations for studies published between database inception and July 2022 were searched without language restrictions. All prospective and retrospective studies were included. The electronic database search yielded 2440 records. Additionally, eight records were identified through snowball searching. Following duplicate removal (45 duplicates found), 2403 records were screened for titles and abstracts. After screening for titles and abstracts and exclusion criteria, 38 reports were included for systematic review, 27 retrospective studies and 11 prospective studies. Data extracted included the general and demographic characteristics of the studies, diagnostic methods used, clinical presentation, site of involvement and details on surgical treatment. Results: In total, 2870 patients with a diagnosis of abdominal tuberculosis were included, and 1803 (63%) underwent a surgical procedure. The majority of patients underwent an open surgical procedure (95%). The most commonly performed procedures were adhesiolysis (21%) and small bowel resection with primary anastomosis (21%). Conclusions: The results of this review suggest that whenever surgery is required, there is a tendency to perform open surgical procedures in patients with complicated abdominal tuberculosis, both in emergency and elective settings, despite advances in minimally invasive surgery. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have revolutionized the management of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), although patient survival is still unsatisfactory. Accurate predictive markers capable of personalizing the treatment of patients with NSCLC are still lacking. Circulating extracellular vesicles involved in cell-to-cell communications through miRNAs (EV-miRs) transfer are promising markers. Plasma from 245 patients with advanced NSCLC who received nivolumab as second-line therapy was collected and analyzed. EV-miRnome was profiled on 174/245 patients by microarray platform, and selected EV-miRs were validated by qPCR. A prognostic model combining EV-miR and clinical variables was built using stepwise Cox regression analysis and tested on an independent patient cohort (71/245). EV-PD-L1 gene copy number was assessed by digital PCR. For 54 patients with disease control, EV-miR changes at best response versus baseline were investigated by microarray and validated by qPCR. EV-miRNome profiling at baseline identified two EV-miRs (miR-181a-5p and miR-574-5p) that, combined with performance status, are capable of discriminating patients unlikely from those that are likely to benefit from immunotherapy (median overall survival of 4 months or higher than 9 months, respectively). EV-PD-L1 digital evaluation reported higher baseline copy number in patients at increased risk of mortality, without improving the prognostic score. Best response EV-miRNome profiling selected six deregulated EV-miRs (miR19a-3p, miR-20a-5p, miR-142-3p, miR-1260a, miR-1260b, and miR-5100) in responding patients. Their longitudinal monitoring highlighted a significant downmodulation already in the first treatment cycles, which lasted more than 6 months. Background: To date, the benefit of image guidance during robot-assisted surgery (IGS) is an object of debate. The current study aims to address the quality of the contemporary body of literature concerning IGS in robotic surgery throughout different surgical specialties. Methods: A systematic review of all English-language articles on IGS, from January 2013 to March 2023, was conducted using PubMed, Cochrane library's Central, EMBASE, MEDLINE, and Scopus databases. Comparative studies that tested performance of IGS vs control were included for the quantitative synthesis, which addressed outcomes analyzed in at least three studies: operative time, length of stay, blood loss, surgical margins, complications, number of nodal retrievals, metastatic nodes, ischemia time, and renal function loss. Bias-corrected ratio of means (ROM) and bias-corrected odds ratio (OR) compared continuous and dichotomous variables, respectively. Subgroup analyses according to guidance type (i.e., 3D virtual reality vs ultrasound vs near-infrared fluoresce) were performed. Results: Twenty-nine studies, based on 11 surgical procedures of three specialties (general surgery, gynecology, urology), were included in the quantitative synthesis. IGS was associated with 12% reduction in length of stay (ROM 0.88; p = 0.03) and 13% reduction in blood loss (ROM 0.87; p = 0.03) but did not affect operative time (ROM 1.00; p = 0.9), or complications (OR 0.93; p = 0.4). IGS was associated with an estimated 44% increase in mean number of removed nodes (ROM 1.44; p < 0.001), and a significantly higher rate of metastatic nodal disease (OR 1.82; p < 0.001), as well as a significantly lower rate of positive surgical margins (OR 0.62; p < 0.001). In nephron sparing surgery, IGS significantly decreased renal function loss (ROM 0.37; p = 0.002). Conclusions: Robot-assisted surgery benefits from image guidance, especially in terms of pathologic outcomes, namely higher detection of metastatic nodes and lower surgical margins. Background: In contemporary surgically treated patients with localized high-grade (G3 or G4) clear-cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), it is not known whether presence of sarcomatoid dedifferentiation is an independent predictor and/or an effect modifier, when cancer-specific mortality (CSM) represents an endpoint. Methods: Within the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database, all surgically treated localized high-grade ccRCC patients treated between 2010 and 2020 were identified. Univariable and multivariable Cox-regression models were used. Results: In 18,853 surgically treated localized high-grade (G3 or G4) ccRCC patients, 5-year CSM-free survival was 87% (62% vs. 88% with vs. without sarcomatoid dedifferentiation, p < 0.001). Presence of sarcomatoid dedifferentiation was an independent predictor of higher CSM (hazard ratio [HR] 1.8, p < 0.001). In univariable survival analyses predicting CSM, presence versus absence of sarcomatoid dedifferentiation in G3 versus G4 yielded the following hazard ratios: HR 1.0 in absent sarcomatoid dedifferentiation in G3; HR 2.7 (p < 0.001) in absent sarcomatoid dedifferentiation in G4; HR 3.9 (p < 0.001) in present sarcomatoid dedifferentiation in G3; HR 5.1 (p < 0.001) in present sarcomatoid dedifferentiation in G4. Finally, in multivariable Cox-regression analyses, the interaction terms defining present versus absent sarcomatoid dedifferentiation in G3 versus G4 represented independent predictors of higher CSM. Conclusions: In contemporary surgically treated patients with localized high-grade ccRCC, sarcomatoid dedifferentiation is not only an independent multivariable predictor of higher CSM, but also interacts with tumor grade and results in even better ability to predict CSM. Blends of bio‐polyesters cover a wide percentage of the market share and possess properties comparable to the ones of conventional polymers. Poly(butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) (PBAT) is a fossil‐based compostable bioplastic, which possess good mechanical properties and processability. Blending PBAT with thermoplastic starch (TPS) allows to lower the cost of the final products and to increase the amount of bioderived material. The influence of the processing parameters on the morphology and on the mechanical properties of PBAT/TPS blends is studied. The compounds were produced via twin‐screw extrusion and then films were produced via cast film extrusion. The quality of the dispersion is strongly related to the screw speed adopted during the compounding process. Motivation Engineering high-affinity binders targeting specific antigenic determinants remains a challenging and often daunting task, requiring extensive experimental screening. Computational methods have the potential to accelerate this process, reducing costs and time, but only if they demonstrate broad applicability and efficiency in exploring mutations, evaluating affinity, and pruning unproductive mutation paths. Results In response to these challenges, we introduce a new computational platform for optimizing protein binders towards their targets. The platform is organized as a series of modules, performing mutation selection and application, molecular dynamics simulations to sample conformations around interaction poses, and mutation prioritization using suitable scoring functions. Notably, the platform supports parallel exploration of different mutation streams, enabling in silico high-throughput screening on High Performance Computing (HPC) systems. Furthermore, the platform is highly customizable, allowing users to implement their own protocols. Currently, one-third of global food production, accounting for 1.3 billions tons, goes wasted due to major humanitarian and environmental challenges. In such a scenario, the circular bioeconomy model stands as an innovative solution by promoting sustainable production, utilizing agri-food waste, and converting non-renewable products into valuable resources. Here, the circular bioeconomy concept was applied on a previously obtained chestnut burr extract (agri-food waste) composed of gallic acid, quinic acid, protocatechuic acid, brevifolin carboxylic acid, and ellagic acid to evaluate its antimicrobial activity against four bacterial opportunistic pathogens (Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli). Our results evidenced a modest but measurable antibacterial activity against Enterococcus faecalis, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 64 μg/mL. In silico studies allowed for identifying the potential molecular target, supporting the underlying antibacterial activity of the active principle and providing useful molecular findings regarding their interaction. In this study, we show a robust and comprehensive in vitro and in silico pipeline aimed at the identification of novel antibacterial scaffolds taking advantage of agri-food waste. Purpose: Coccydynia, characterized by persistent pain in the coccygeal region, significantly impacts patients' quality of life. While various treatment modalities exist, including conservative measures and surgical interventions like coccygectomy, optimal management remains unclear. This retrospective cohort study aimed to compare the clinical outcomes, functional improvements, and quality of life in patients with chronic coccydynia undergoing either infiltrative treatment or coccygectomy. Methods: Data from patients treated at our institution from January 2018 to December 2022 were analyzed. Participants meeting inclusion criteria were divided into two groups: Group A underwent coccygectomy, while Group B received conservative therapy. Clinical assessments, radiographic evaluations, and patient-reported outcomes were collected preoperatively and at follow-up intervals. Results: Of the 223 initially examined patients, 55 met inclusion criteria. Group A (n = 21) underwent coccygectomy, while Group B (n = 34) received conservative therapy. Both groups showed significant pain reduction post-intervention, with sustained improvement in Group A. Functional outcomes favoured Group A, with significant improvements in disability and quality of life measures. Complications were minimal, with only one case of superficial wound infection in Group A. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that coccygectomy provides superior and lasting pain relief, functional improvement, and quality of life improvement compared to conservative therapy. While complications were minimal, further research with larger cohorts is warranted to validate these results and explore long-term outcomes. Despite its historical association with complications, advancements in surgical techniques and perioperative care have led to improved outcomes and reduced complication rates. Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated inflammatory cutaneous disease characterized by elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines and adipokine Lipocalin-2 (LCN-2). Recently, natural plant-based products have been studied as new antipsoriatic compounds. We investigate the ability of a leaf extract of the marine plant Posidonia oceanica (POE) to inhibit psoriatic dermatitis in C57BL/6 mice treated with Imiquimod (IMQ). One group of mice was topically treated with IMQ (IMQ mice) for 5 days, and a second group received POE orally before each topical IMQ treatment (IMQ-POE mice). Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI) score, thickness, and temperature of the skin area treated with IMQ were measured in both groups. Upon sacrifice, the organs were weighed, and skin biopsies and blood samples were collected. Plasma and lesional skin protein expression of IL-17, IL-23, IFN-γ, IL-2, and TNF-α and plasma LCN-2 concentration were evaluated by ELISA. PASI score, thickness, and temperature of lesional skin were reduced in IMQ-POE mice, as were histological features of psoriatic dermatitis and expression of inflammatory cytokines and LCN-2 levels. We investigate the fully nonlinear model for convection in a Darcy porous material where the diffusion is of anomalous type as recently proposed by Barletta. The fully nonlinear model is analysed but we allow for variable gravity or penetrative convection effects which result in spatially dependent coefficients. This spatial dependence usually requires numerical solution even in the linearized case. In this work, we demonstrate that regardless of the size of the Rayleigh number, the perturbation solution will decay exponentially in time for the superdiffusion case. In addition, we establish a similar result for convection in a bidisperse porous medium where both macro- and microporosity effects are present. The fashion industry is ranked as the second largest cause of environmental pollution. In this context, circular business models emerge as key tools to address the negative impacts of the textile industry. The aim of this work is to identify alternatives to the currently dominant model followed by fast fashion, through the proposal of a circular business model based on leasing. The methodology of the work, based on the take‐make‐waste model, is based on a multicriteria analysis with the local–global approach using academic experts and fashion and retail experts. The results show that the criteria of the access‐based model and best care are the most relevant. The highest sustainability value is assigned to leasing, which guarantees ethical conditions for workers, followed by the use of raw materials (recycled or bio‐based materials) and the reduction of overproduction. The implications of this work determine that leasing can support circular fashion and that the social component of sustainability should be given more attention in production models. In linear and local stability analysis, the small amplitude disturbance behavior has been well understood for decades. In this context, convectively unstable flows act as noise amplifiers. In other words, a continuous excitation source at a fixed location triggers the spatial growth (or decay) of disturbances downstream of it. Hence, these flows have been traditionally analyzed using a spatial stability analysis, where disturbances are assumed temporally periodic and spatially unstable. Such a behavior has been consistently verified by direct numerical simulations. The present investigation shows that this agreement indeed occurs, but only close enough to the excitation source under certain parametric conditions. When the excitation source triggers disturbances that decay in space, far away from this source, spatially periodic and temporally unstable disturbances are allowed to grow and become dominant. Compartmentalized meningeal inflammation is thought to represent one of the key players in the pathogenesis of cortical demyelination in multiple sclerosis. PET targeting the 18 kDa mitochondrial translocator protein (TSPO) is a molecular-specific approach to quantifying immune cell-mediated density in the cortico-meningeal tissue compartment in vivo. This study aimed to characterize cortical and meningeal TSPO expression in a heterogeneous cohort of multiple sclerosis cases using in vivo simultaneous MR-PET with 11C-PBR28, a second-generation TSPO radioligand, and ex vivo immunohistochemistry. Forty-nine multiple sclerosis patients (21 with secondary progressive and 28 with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis) with mixed or high affinity binding for 11C-PBR28 underwent 90-min 11C-PBR28 simultaneous MR-PET. Tracer binding was measured using 60–90 min normalized standardized uptake value ratios sampled at mid-cortical depth and ∼3 mm above the pial surface. Data in multiple sclerosis patients were compared to 21 age-matched healthy controls. To characterize the nature of 11C-PBR28 PET uptake, the meningeal and cortical lesion cellular expression of TSPO was further described in post-mortem brain tissue from 20 cases with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis and five age-matched healthy donors. Relative to healthy controls, patients with multiple sclerosis exhibited abnormally increased TSPO signal in the cortex and meningeal tissue, diffusively in progressive disease and more localized in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. In multiple sclerosis, increased meningeal TSPO levels were associated with increased Expanded Disability Status Scale scores (P = 0.007, by linear regression). Immunohistochemistry, validated using in situ sequencing analysis, revealed increased TSPO expression in the meninges and adjacent subpial cortical lesions of post-mortem secondary progressive multiple sclerosis cases relative to control tissue. In these cases, increased TSPO expression was related to meningeal inflammation. Translocator protein immunostaining was detected on meningeal MHC-class II+ macrophages and cortical-activated MHC-class II+ TMEM119+ microglia. In vivo arterial blood data and neuropathology showed that endothelial binding did not significantly account for increased TSPO cortico-meningeal expression in multiple sclerosis. Our findings support the use of TSPO-PET in multiple sclerosis for imaging in vivo inflammation in the cortico-meningeal brain tissue compartment and provide in vivo evidence implicating meningeal inflammation in the pathogenesis of the disease. While the brittle polylactide (PLA) has a high durability among bioplastics, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBH) with certain ductility exhibits facile compostability. The addition of polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) may also be used to improve the ductility and toughness of brittle bioplastics. Binary and ternary blends of PLA/PBAT/PHBH based on either PLA or PHBH as the matrix have been manufactured using a twin-screw extruder. The melt rheological, mechanical, and morphological properties of the processed samples were examined. Binary blends of PLA/PHBH show superior strength, with the PLA75/PHBH25 blend exhibiting a tensile strength of 35.2 ± 3.0 MPa, which may be attributed to miscible-like morphology. In contrast, blends of PLA with PBAT demonstrate low strength, with the PLA50/PBAT50 blend exhibits a tensile strength of 9.5 ± 2.0 MPa due to the presence of large droplets in the matrix. PBAT-containing blends exhibit lower impact strengths compared to PHBH-containing blends. For instance, a PLA75/PBAT25 blend displays an impact strength of 1.76 ± 0.1 kJ/m2, whereas the PHBH75/PBAT25 blend displays an impact strength of 2.61 ± 0.3 kJ/m2, which may be attributed to uniformly dispersed PBAT droplets. Thermoformed fossil‐based disposable packaging is widely used in everyday life but it represents a serious environmental problem, as it is often incorrectly dispersed or destined to landfills. Bio‐based and biodegradable materials can constitute and effective solution to this issue. Two different blends of poly(butylene succinate‐co‐butylene adipate) (PBSA) and Poly (3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBH) were studied as constituents for disposable packaging production. The blends were produced via twin screw extrusion. Sheets were cast extruded and then thermoformed into trays. A rheological, thermal and mechanical characterization was performed on compounds and manufacts. Both blends presented a good processability and interesting properties for packaging application, which can be tailored by varying the percentage of constituent polymers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
