Road transport systems kill millions of animals on every inhabited continent each year, and thousands of human lives are lost. Odour repellents (ORE) are a WVC mitigation measure which have been extensively applied across central Europe to prevent or minimise the number of ungulate–vehicle collisions (UVCs). OREs aim to increase the vigilance of ungulates near roads and therefore change their behaviour in areas where vehicle collisions may occur. Despite many scientific papers on the topic of odour repellent effectiveness, a lack of behavioural studies means there is still little understanding of the mechanism of ORE functionality. OREs are applied as an area repellent, so their effectiveness is influenced by multiple factors, and constantly discussed by both academics and the lay public. This paper summarises the state of knowledge about application and effectiveness of odour repellents in road ecology, and suggests research questions to fill information gaps. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The treatment and disposal of sewage sludge is one of the most important and critical problems of wastewater treatment plants. 8.7 million tonnes of dry matter of sewage sludge were produced annually in the European Union in the year 2020. Due to the fact that sewage sludge contains a large number of substances that are not beneficial for human health, the conditions for sludge management will be significantly tightened in the EU countries. One option for sludge liquidation is the production of biofuel in a form of granules or pellets from sewage sludge enriched by waste celluloses. The achieved results show that the resulting quality of such alternative biofuel is fully comparable to conventional fossil fuels. The economic analysis is based on the simulation of cash flows associated with the implementation of the project over the lifetime and the calculation of levelised cost (LCOE). Results shows (under the current economic situation) that solar dryer technology ensures the lowest LCOE at the level of 26 EUR/GJ in fuel. If the LCOE of the alternative biofuel includes the price of the saved emission allowance and the future costs of sewage sludge disposal, the resulting price is directly competitive with lignite. The results thus clearly show that there is an ecological and economically competitive substitute for solid fossil fuels, which may be an important step for the future use of local combustion sources such as district heating plants. In this study, we report for the first time a novel type of sorbent that can be used for mercury adsorption from the air-based off-gasses—vermiculite impregnated with alkali polysulfides and thiosulfates. In contrast to other sorbents, vermiculite exhibits superior thermal stability in air and low adsorption capacity for organic vapors. This allows for a more favorable design of the soil remediation unit—direct coupling of thermal desorber with catalytic oxidizer using air as a carrier gas. In the bench-scale test at 180 °C, the sulfur/vermiculite sorbent exhibited significantly higher efficiency for the adsorption of mercury vapor from the off-gasses than the commercial sulfur/activated carbon sorbent at its highest operating temperature (120 °C). The average mercury concentration in the adsorber off-gas decreased from 1.634 mg/m3 for the sulfur/activated carbon to 0.008 mg/m3 achieved with impregnated vermiculite. Activated carbon prepared from cocoa pod husk, which is an abundant agricultural waste, was employed as a green support for palladium oxidation catalysts. Systematic characterization of the support and palladium catalysts by atomic emission spectroscopy, N2 and CO2 physisorption measurements, X‐ray powder diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, electron microscopy, temperature‐programmed reduction by hydrogen, and temperature‐programmed desorption of NH3 and CO2 allowed detailed monitoring of their characteristics. Subsequently, the catalytic performance and selectivity in the oxidation of ethanol as a model volatile organic compound (VOC) was studied and linked to physicochemical properties of the catalysts. Activated carbon was prepared from agricultural waste (cocoa pod husk) with ZnCl2 as an activating agent and employed as a green support for Pd oxidation catalysts. Pd nanoparticles were introduced by impregnation with Pd acetate in the presence of citric acid. Abstract: Two unconventional raw materials, the seeds from Spondias purpurea L. (red mombin) and Inga edulis (ice cream bean), were characterized and used as precursors to produce good‐quality zinc chloride‐activated carbons for potential use in water treatment applications. The red mombin seed was significantly more porous than the ice cream bean seed, while the activated carbons prepared from red mombin seed and ice cream bean seeds showed both a very well‐established microporous‐mesoporous structure. Equilibrium as well as kinetic adsorption experiments were conducted with methylene blue, methyl orange, and As(V). It was revealed that both seeds are unconventional, renewable, cheap, and suitable agro‐precursors for production of activated carbons with potential application in wastewater treatment. We reconstructed pore structures of three porous solids that differ from each other in morphology and topology of pore space. To achieve this, we used a stochastic method based on simulated annealing and X-ray computed microtomography. Simulated annealing was constrained by the following microstructural descriptors sampled along the principal and diagonal directions: the two-point probability function for the void phase and the lineal-path functions for both void and solid phases. The stochastic method also assumed the isotropic pore structures in accordance with a recent paper (Čapek et al. in Transp Porous Media 88(1): 87-106 ()). With the exception of the solid with the widest pores, we made tomographic volume images in high and low resolution, which enabled us to study the effect of resolution on microstructural descriptors and effective transport properties. A comparison of the two-point probability function and the lineal-path function sampled in the principal directions revealed that the pore structures derived from the tomographic volume images were slightly anisotropic, in opposition to the assumption of the stochastic method. Besides the anisotropy, other microstructural descriptors including the pore-size function and the total fraction of percolating cells indicated that the morphological and topological characteristics of the pore structures depended on the reconstruction method and its parameters. Particularly, the pore structures reproduced using the stochastic method contained wider pores than those obtained using X-ray tomography. Deviations between the pore structures derived from low- and high-resolution tomographic volume images were also observed and imputed to partial volume artefacts. Then, viscous flow of incompressible liquid, ordinary diffusion, Knudsen flow and self-diffusion of water in the reconstructed pore spaces were simulated. As counterparts, experimental data were measured by means of permeation and Wicke-Kallenbach cells and pulsed field gradient NMR. Deviations between the simulated quantities on the one hand and experimental data on the other hand were generally acceptable, which corroborated the pore-space models. As expected, the predictions based on the tomographic models of pore space were more successful than those derived from the stochastic models. The stationary effective transport properties, i.e. the effective permeability, the effective pore size and the geometric factor, were sensitive to a bias in long-range pore connectivity. Furthermore, the time-dependent effective diffusivity was found to be especially sensitive to relatively small morphological deviations between the real and reconstructed pore structures. It is concluded that the combined predictions of the effective permeability, the effective pore size, the geometric factor and time-dependent effective self-diffusivity of water are needed for the reliable evaluation of pore-space reconstruction. Two ex-situ and one in-situ semi-pilot plant UCG experiments in the experimental mine Barbara were performed with hard coal and lignite samples. To evaluate the influence of the UCG process on the textural properties of surrounding strata and coals, samples from various locations of the coal seam and the stratum samples before and after the UCG process were collected. Mercury porosimetry, helium pycnometry, and physical adsorption of nitrogen were used for the determination of textural properties of samples. Permeation gas transport was modelled based on the knowledge of the real structure characteristics of the stratum samples by the Mean Transport-Pore Model (MTPM). Influence of the individual texture and transport parameters on the post processing gas transport through porous strata with respect to the variability of their possible values was also evaluated. A new technique of synthesis of mesoporous silica with protonated amino groups avoiding microwave treatment of mesophase was developed using a template method. The block-copolymer P123 was used as a template and sodium meta-silicate with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane as precursors. After the removal of template from mesophase with boiling ethanol, the obtained sample displayed highly ordered hexagonal structure with attractive textural parameters: S = 460 m g, V = 0.79 cmg and d = 7.1 nm. FTIR and C CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy revealed the presence of alkyl ammonium groups (0.7 mmol g) that were able to attach anions of molybdophosphoric acid to the surface of the synthesized mesoporous material. A complex treatment of agricultural waste including the following major steps: anaerobic fermentation of suitable waste, cogeneration of the obtained biogas and growth of microalgae consuming the CO2 from biogas and flue gas was verified under field conditions in a pilot-scale photobioreactor. The growth kinetics of microalgae Chlorella sp. consuming mixture of air and carbon dioxide (2% (v/v) of CO2), or flue gas (8—10% (v/v) of CO2) was investigated. The results obtained in the pilot photobioreactor were compared with results previously measured in laboratory photobioreactors. The field tests were performed in a pilot-scale outdoor solar-bubbled photobioreactor located at a biogas station. The pilot-scale photobioreactor was in the shape of a flat and narrow vertical prism with a volume of 300 L. The microalgae growth rates were correlated with empirical formulas. Laboratory analyses of the produced microalgae confirmed that it meets the strict EU criteria for relevant contaminants level in foodstuffs. Utilization of flue gases from cogeneration therefore was not found to be detrimental to the quality of microalgal biomass, and may be used in these types of bioreactors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
