Background: Investigating emotion sequence patterns in the posts of discussion forums in massive open online courses (MOOCs) holds a vital role in shaping online interactions and impacting learning achievement. While the majority of research focuses on the relationship between emotions and interactions in MOOC forum discussions, research on identifying the crucial difference in emotion sequence patterns among different interaction groups remains in its infancy. Objectives: This research utilizes deep learning and sequential pattern mining to investigate whether there are differences in emotion sequence patterns across different groups of learners who exhibit various types of interactions in online discussion forums. Methods: Data from a comprehensive array of sources, including log files, discussion texts and scores from 498 learners in online discussion forums, were collected for this study. The agglomerative hierarchical algorithm is used to classify learners into groups with different levels of interactions. Additionally, we implement and evaluate multiple deep learning models for detecting different emotions from online discussions. Relevant emotion sequence patterns were identified using sequence pattern analysis and the identified emotion sequence patterns were compared across different groups with different levels of interactions. Results and Conclusions: Using an agglomerative hierarchical algorithm, we classified learners into three distinct groups characterized by different levels of interactions: high, average and low level. Leveraging the bi‐directional long short‐term memory model for emotion detection yielded the highest predictive performance, with an impressive F‐measure of 94.01%, a recall rate of 93.83% and an accuracy score of 95.01%. The results also revealed that learners in the low‐level interaction group experienced more emotion transition from boredom to frustration than the other two groups. Therefore, the aggregation of students into groups and the utilization of their MOOC log data offer educators the capability to provide adaptive emotional feedback, customize assessments and offer more personalized attention as needed. Landslides, widespread and highly dangerous geological disasters, pose significant risks to humankind and the ecological environment. Consequently, predicting landslides is vital for disaster prevention and mitigation strategies. At present, the predominant methods for predicting landslide susceptibility are evolving from conventional machine learning techniques to deep learning approaches. This paper explores the potential of employing the TabNet algorithm for landslide susceptibility analysis in China's WanZhou region and evaluates its performance against traditional machine learning techniques. Loess landslides are one of the geological hazards prevalent in mountainous areas of Loess Plateau, seriously threatening people's lives and property safety. Accurate identification of landslides is a prerequisite for reducing the risk of landslide hazards. Traditional landslide interpretation methods often have the disadvantage of being laborious and difficult to use on a large scale compared with the recently developed deep learning-based landslide detection methods. In this study, we propose an improved deep learning model, landslide detection- you only look once (LD-YOLO), based on the existing you only look once (YOLO) model for the intelligent identification of old and new landslides in loess areas. Specifically, remote sensing images of landslides in Baoji City, Shaanxi Province, China are acquired from the Google Earth Engine platform. The landslide images of Baoji City (excluding Qianyang County) are used to establish a loess landslide dataset for training the model. The landslide data of Qianyang County is used to verify the detection performance of the model. The focal and efficient IoU (Focal-EIoU) loss function and efficient channel attention (ECA) mechanism are incorporated into the 7th version of YOLO (YOLOv7) model to construct the LD-YOLO model, which makes it more suitable for the landslide detection task. The experiments yielded an improved LD-YOLO model with average precision of 92.05%, precision of 92.31%, recall of 90.28%, and F1-score of 91.28% for loess landslide detection. The landslides in Qianyang County were divided into two test sets, new landslides and old landslides, which were used to test the detection performance of LD-YOLO for both types of landslides. The results show that LD-YOLO detects old landslides with a detection precision of 82.75% and a recall of 80%. When detecting new landslides, the detection precision is 94.29% and the recall is 91.67%. It indicates that our proposed LD-YOLO model has strong detection performance for both new and old landslides in loess areas. Through a proposed solution that can realize the accurate detection of landslides in loess areas, this paper provides a valuable reference for the application of deep learning methods in landslide identification. Experiments show that the fusion model of deep learning and XGBoost proposed in this paper has higher accuracy than the single model using only one of them in the case of high‐dimensional sparse features. Apical periodontitis (AP) is one of the most prevalent disorders in dentistry. However, it can be underdiagnosed in asymptomatic patients. In addition, the perioperative evaluation of 3-dimensional (3D) lesion volume is of great clinical relevance, but the required slice-by-slice manual delineation method is time- and labor-intensive. Here, for quickly and accurately detecting and segmenting periapical lesions (PALs) associated with AP on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, we proposed and geographically validated a novel 3D deep convolutional neural network algorithm, named PAL-Net. On the internal 5-fold cross-validation set, our PAL-Net achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.98. The algorithm also improved the diagnostic performance of dentists with varying levels of experience, as evidenced by their enhanced average AUC values (junior dentists: 0.89–0.94; senior dentists: 0.91–0.93), and significantly reduced the diagnostic time (junior dentists: 69.3 min faster; senior dentists: 32.4 min faster). Moreover, our PAL-Net achieved an average Dice similarity coefficient over 0.87 (0.85–0.88), which is superior or comparable to that of other existing state-of-the-art PAL segmentation algorithms. Furthermore, we validated the generalizability of the PAL-Net system using multiple external data sets from Central, East, and North China, showing that our PAL-Net has strong robustness. Our PAL-Net can help improve the diagnostic performance and speed of dentists working from CBCT images, provide clinically relevant volume information to dentists, and can potentially be applied in dental clinics, especially without expert-level dentists or radiologists. The Loess Plateau is an ecologically fragile area in China; furthermore, loess landslides are typical forms of geological disasters, which severely limit the sustainable development of the local societies and the economy. Studying the automatic detection of landslides can facilitate disaster prevention and mitigation in the Loess Plateau, and help realize the climate action goal (SDG 13) of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This paper takes typical loess areas in China as the research object, and establishes a historical loess landslide sample database based on Google Earth (GEE) image data, with a total of 1451 loess landslides. The automatic detection of loess landslides is implemented by improving the You Only Look Once X (YOLOX) algorithm. The results show that the average accuracy of landslide detection in this method is 95.43%, and the accuracy rate is 96.32%, which effectively combines the earth's big data to realize the automatic detection of loess landslides. The research results provide technical support for the promotion of disaster prevention and mitigation in China's loess regions, the realization of sustainable development goals, and the improvement of natural disaster prevention–resistance–reduction systems. Accurate information concerning crown profile is critical in analyzing biological processes and providing a more accurate estimate of carbon balance, which is conducive to sustainable forest management and planning. The similarities between the types of data addressed with LSTM algorithms and crown profile data make a compelling argument for the integration of deep learning into the crown profile modeling. Thus, the aim was to study the application of deep learning method LSTM and its variant algorithms in the crown profile modeling, using the crown profile database from Pinus yunnanensis secondary forests in Yunnan province, in southwest China. Furthermore, the SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) was used to interpret the predictions of ensemble or deep learning models. The results showed that LSTM's variant algorithms was competitive with traditional Vanila LSTM, but substantially outperformed ensemble learning model LightGBM. Specifically, the proposed Hybrid LSTM-LightGBM and Integrated LSTM-LightGBM have achieved a best forecasting performance on training set and testing set respectively. Furthermore, the feature importance analysis of LightGBM and Vanila LSTM presented that there were more factors that contribute significantly to Vanila LSTM model compared to LightGBM model. Autonomous detection and fishing by underwater robots will be the main way to obtain aquatic products in the future; sea urchins are the main research object of aquatic product detection. When the classical Single-Shot MultiBox Detector (SSD) algorithm is applied to the detection of sea urchins, it also has disadvantages of being inaccurate to small targets and insensitive to the direction of the sea urchin. Based on the classic SSD algorithm, this paper proposes a feature-enhanced sea urchin detection algorithm. Firstly, according to the spiny-edge characteristics of a sea urchin, a multidirectional edge detection algorithm is proposed to enhance the feature, which is taken as the 4th channel of image and the original 3 channels of underwater image together as the input for the further deep learning. Then, in order to improve the shortcomings of SSD algorithm's poor ability to detect small targets, resnet 50 is used as the basic framework of the network, and the idea of feature cross-level fusion is adopted to improve the feature expression ability and strengthen semantic information. The open data set provided by the National Natural Science Foundation of China underwater Robot Competition will be used as the test set and training set. Under the same training and test conditions, the AP value of the algorithm in this paper reaches 81.0%, 7.6% higher than the classic SSD algorithm, and the confidence of small target analysis is also improved. Pine Wilt Disease (PWD) is a devastating global forest disease that spreads rapidly and causes severe ecological and economic losses. Drone remote sensing imaging technology is an effective way to detect PWD and control its spread. However, the existing algorithms for detecting PWD using drone images have low recognition accuracy, difficult image calibration, and slow detection speed. We propose a fast detection algorithm for PWD based on an improved YOLOv8 model. The model first adds a small object detection layer to the Neck module in the YOLOv8 base framework to improve the detection performance of small diseased pine trees and then inserts three attention mechanism modules on the backbone network to extend the sensory field of the network to enhance the extraction of image features of deep diseased pine trees. To evaluate the proposed algorithm framework, we collected and created a dataset in Weihai City, China, containing PWD middle-stage and late-stage infected tree samples. The experimental results show that the improved YOLOv8s-GAM model achieves 81%, 67.2%, and 76.4% optimal detection performance on mAP50, mAP50-95, and Mean evaluation metrics, which is 4.5%, 4.5%, and 2.7% higher than the original YOLOv8s model. With the continuous development of computer vision technology, more and more landslide identification detection tasks have started to shift from manual visual interpretation to automatic computer identification, and automatic landslide detection methods based on remote sensing satellite images and deep learning have been gradually developed. However, most existing algorithms often have the problem of low precision and weak generalization in landslide detection. Based on the Google Earth Engine platform, this study selected landslide image data from 24 study areas in China and established the DN landslide sample dataset, which contains a total of 1440 landslide samples. The original YOLOv7 algorithm model was improved and optimized by applying the SE squeezed attention mechanism and VariFocal loss function to construct the SE-YOLOv7 model to realize the automatic detection of landslides in remote sensing images. The experimental results show that the mAP, Precision value, Recall value, and F1-Score of the improved SE-YOLOv7 model for landslide identification are 91.15%, 93.35%, 94.54%, and 93.94%, respectively. At the same time, through a field investigation and verification study in Qianyang County, Baoji City, Shaanxi Province, comparing the detection results of SE-YOLOv7, it is concluded that the improved SE-YOLOv7 can locate the landslide location more accurately, detect the landslide range more accurately, and have fewer missed detections. The research results show that the algorithm model has strong detection accuracy for many types of landslide image data, which provides a technical reference for future research on landslide detection based on remote sensing images. Lung cancer screening using computed tomography (CT) has increased the detection rate of small pulmonary nodules and early-stage lung adenocarcinoma. It would be clinically meaningful to accurate assessment of the nodule histology by CT scans with advanced deep learning algorithms. However, recent studies mainly focus on predicting benign and malignant nodules, lacking of model for the risk stratification of invasive adenocarcinoma. We propose an ensemble multi-view 3D convolutional neural network (EMV-3D-CNN) model to study the risk stratification of lung adenocarcinoma. We include 1075 lung nodules (≤30 mm and ≥4 mm) with preoperative thin-section CT scans and definite pathology confirmed by surgery. Our model achieves a state-of-art performance of 91.3% and 92.9% AUC for diagnosis of benign/malignant and pre-invasive/invasive nodules, respectively. Importantly, our model outperforms senior doctors in risk stratification of invasive adenocarcinoma with 77.6% accuracy [i.e., Grades 1, 2, 3]). Removing motion blur has been an important issue in computer vision literature. Motion blur is caused by the relative motion between the camera and the photographed object. However, in recent years, some achievements have been made in the research of image deblurring by using deep learning algorithms. In this paper, an enhanced adversarial network model is proposed. The proposed model can use the weight of feature channel to generate sharp image and eliminate draughtboard artefacts. In addition, the mixed loss function enables the network to output high-quality image. The proposed approach is tested using GOPRO datasets and Lai datasets. In the GOPRO datasets, the peak signal-to-noise ratio of the proposed approach is up to 28.674, and DeblurGAN is 27.454. And the structural similarity measure can be achieved up to 0.969, and DeblurGAN is 0.939. Furthermore, the images were obtained from China's Chang'e 3 Lander to test the new algorithm. Due to the elimination of the chessboard effect, the deblurred image has a better visual appearance. The proposed method achieved higher performance and efficiency in qualitative and quantitative aspects using the benchmark dataset experiments. The results also provided various insights into the design and development of the camera pointing system, which was mounted on the Lander for capturing images of the moon and rover for Chang'e space mission. The assessment of bone age is important for evaluating child development, optimizing the treatment for endocrine diseases, etc. And the well-known Tanner-Whitehouse (TW) clinical method improves the quantitative description of skeletal development based on setting up a series of distinguishable stages for each bone individually. However, the assessment is affected by rater variability, which makes the assessment result not reliable enough in clinical practice. The main goal of this work is to achieve a reliable and accurate skeletal maturity determination by proposing an automated bone age assessment method called PEARLS, which is based on the TW3-RUS system (analysis of the radius, ulna, phalanges, and metacarpal bones). The proposed method comprises the point estimation of anchor (PEA) module for accurately localizing specific bones, the ranking learning (RL) module for producing a continuous stage representation of each bone by encoding the ordinal relationship between stage labels into the learning process, and the scoring (S) module for outputting the bone age directly based on two standard transform curves. The development of each module in PEARLS is based on different datasets. Finally, corresponding results are presented to evaluate the system performance in localizing specific bones, determining the skeletal maturity stage, and assessing the bone age. The mean average precision of point estimation is 86.29%, the average stage determination precision is 97.33% overall bones, and the average bone age assessment accuracy is 96.8% within 1 year for the female and male cohorts. The catenary support components (CSCs) are the most important devices in high-speed railways to support contact lines for powering trains. To estimate the states of CSCs, it is very necessary to locate their positions in a monitoring system based on computer vision. Considering the application scenarios and characteristics of CSCs, an automatic and quick positioning system is designed in this paper to simultaneously position the multiscale CSCs with 12 categories. In the system, an effective framework called CSCs network (CSCNET) is presented, which cascades the coarse positioning network and the fine positioning network to reduce multiscale differences between different CSCs. In the coarse positioning network, a new unsupervised clustering algorithm based on the relative positioning information is proposed to classify the catenary images. Then, a convolutional neural network (CNN) classification network is trained to extract the structural features of catenary images and generate the proposal regions with labels. In the fine positioning network, a modified CNN positioning framework is applied to obtain the accurate positions of CSCs based on the coarse positioning results. Due to the special lightweight structure with a classification network, the relative position information is applied and makes the CSCNET sensitive to small-scale components. The experimental results from some high-speed railway lines in China show that the proposed system has obvious advantages in the CSCs positioning. The mean average precision and frames per second of CSCNET reach 0.837 and 2.17, respectively. In this study, a deep learning model is proposed to predict groundwater levels. The model is able to accurately complete the prediction task even when the data utilized are insufficient. The hybrid model that we have developed, CNN-LSTM-ML, uses a combined network structure of convolutional neural networks (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) network to extract the time dependence of groundwater level on meteorological factors, and uses a meta-learning algorithm framework to ensure the network's performance under sample conditions. The study predicts groundwater levels from 66 observation wells in the middle and lower reaches of the Heihe River in arid regions and compares them with other data-driven models. Experiments show that the CNN-LSTM-ML model outperforms other models in terms of prediction accuracy in both the short term (1 month) and long term (12 months). Under the condition that the training data are reduced by 50%, the MAE of the proposed model is 33.6% lower than that of LSTM. The results of ablation experiments show that CNN-LSTM-ML is 26.5% better than the RMSE of the original CNN-LSTM structure. The disposal of recyclable waste in China primarily relies on manual sorting, which is inefficient, suffers from harsh working environment and high cost. In this study, an intelligent recyclable waste sorting system is proposed, which employs RGB image as visual information input. Then the class and coordinates of the moving waste on the conveyor belt are obtained through object detection algorithm. Finally, the recyclable waste is picked up by the robotic arm and delivered to different bins. As recyclable waste has various appearance, it collects 36 572 frames of waste pictures and establishes a recyclable waste dataset for model training. This is to improve the generalization ability of the object detection model. Based on YOLOv4, an attention-based detection algorithm, Attn-YOLOv4 is proposed, and the mAP of Attn-YOLOv4 algorithm is 0.16% higher than that of the original YOLOv4. Besides, a multithreaded object tracking algorithm is proposed, which achieves an accuracy of 0.945 within a tolerance of 20 mm. Furthermore, a post-processing module acquires the orientations of the waste, which is further converted to world coordinates and orientations for the robotic arm. The increasing and widespread usage of social media enables the investigation of public preference using the web as a device. Public sentiment as expressed in 44,319 massive open online course (MOOCs) related microblogs from January to December 2017 was examined on Sina Weibo (the Chinese equivalent of Twitter) to obtain broad insight into how MOOCs are viewed by the public in the Chinese educational landscape. Despite the unstable upward trend of public interest in MOOCs over the past 12 months, the public opinion on MOOCs was largely positive. Content and sentiment analyses were conducted to facilitate a better understanding of what is communicated on social media. A general model of public opinions of MOOCs in China has been developed based on the findings. Individuals were classified into a threefold typology based on the sources and purposes of how this recent form of distance education was perceived. Based on the seven themes, the public views towards MOOCs were differentiated among 'promoters', 'commenters' and 'experiencers'.Implications of the findings were also discussed. With the comprehensive development of national fitness, men, women, young, and old in China have joined the ranks of fitness. In order to increase the understanding of human movement, many researches have designed a lot of software or hardware to realize the analysis of human movement state. However, the recognition efficiency of various systems or platforms is not high, and the reduction ability is poor, so the recognition information processing system based on LSTM recurrent neural network under deep learning is proposed to collect and recognize human motion data. The system realizes the collection, processing, recognition, storage, and display of human motion data by constructing a three-layer human motion recognition information processing system and introduces LSTM recurrent neural network to optimize the recognition efficiency of the system, simplify the recognition process, and reduce the data missing rate caused by dimension reduction. Finally, we use the known dataset to train the model and analyze the performance and application effect of the system through the actual motion state. The final results show that the performance of LSTM recurrent neural network is better than the traditional algorithm, the accuracy can reach 0.980, and the confusion matrix results show that the recognition of human motion by the system can reach 85 points to the greatest extent. The test shows that the system can recognize and process the human movement data well, which has great application significance for future physical education and daily physical exercise. Scheduling viewers effectively among different Content Delivery Network (CDN) providers is challenging owing to the extreme diversity in the crowdsourced live streaming (CLS) scenarios. Abundant algorithms have been proposed in recent years, which, however, suffer from a critical limitation: Due to their inaccurate feature engineering or naive rules, they cannot optimally schedule viewers. To address this concern, we put forward LTS (Learn to Schedule), a novel scheduling algorithm that can adapt to the dynamics from both viewer traffics and CDN performance. In detail, we first propose LTS-RL, an approach that schedules CLS viewers based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL). Since LTS-RL is trained in an end-to-end way, it can automatically learn scheduling algorithms without any pre-programmed models or assumptions about the environment dynamics. At the same time, to practically deploy LTS-RL, we then use the decision tree and imitation learning to convert LTS-RL into a more light-weighted and interpretable model, which is denoted as Fast-LTS.After the extensive evaluation of the real data from a leading CLS platform in China, we demonstrate that our proposed model (both LTS-RL and Fast-LTS) can improve the average quality of experience (QoE) over state-of-the-art approaches by 8.71-15.63%. At the same time, we also demonstrate that Fast-LTS can faithfully convert the complicated LTS-RL with slight performance degradation (<2%), while significantly reducing the decision time (×7-10). The smart district heating system (SDHS) is an important element of the construction of smart cities in Northern China; it plays a significant role in meeting heating requirements and green energy saving in winter. Various Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and wireless transmission technologies are applied to monitor data in real-time and to form a historical database. The accurate prediction of heating loads based on massive historical datasets is the necessary condition and key basis for formulating an optimal heating control strategy in the SDHS, which contributes to the reduction in the consumption of energy and the improvement in the energy dispatching efficiency and accuracy. In order to achieve the high prediction accuracy of SDHS and to improve the representation ability of multi-time-scale features, a novel short-term heating load prediction algorithm based on a feature fusion long short-term memory (LSTM) model (FFLSTM) is proposed. Three characteristics, namely proximity, periodicity, and trend, are found after analyzing the heating load data from the aspect of the hourly time dimension. In order to comprehensively utilize the data's intrinsic characteristics, three LSTM models are employed to make separate predictions, and, then, the prediction results based on internal features and other external features at the corresponding moments are imported into the high-level LSTM model for fusion processing, which brings a more accurate prediction result of the heating load. Detailed comparisons between the proposed FFLSTM algorithm and the-state-of-art algorithms are conducted in this paper. The experimental results show that the proposed FFLSTM algorithm outperforms others and can obtain a higher prediction accuracy. Regional landslide identification is important for the risk management of landslide hazards. The traditional methods of regional landslide identification were mainly conducted by a human being. In previous studies, automatic landslide recognition mainly focused on new landslides distinct from the environment induced by rainfall or earthquake, using the image classification method and semantic segmentation method of deep learning. However, there is a lack of research on the automatic recognition of old loess landslides, which are difficult to distinguish from the environment. Therefore, this study uses the object detection method of deep learning to identify old loess landslides with Google Earth images. At first, a database of loess historical landslide samples was established for deep learning based on Google Earth images. A total of 6111 landslides were interpreted in three landslide areas in Gansu Province, China. Second, three object detection algorithms including the one-stage algorithm RetinaNet and YOLO v3 and the two-stage algorithm Mask R-CNN, were chosen for automatic landslide identification. Mask R-CNN achieved the greatest accuracy, with an AP of 18.9% and F1-score of 55.31%. Among the three landslide areas, the order of identification accuracy from high to low was Site 1, Site 2, and Site 3, with the F1-scores of 62.05%, 61.04% and 50.88%, respectively, which were positively related to their recognition difficulty. Due to insufficient samples, the generalization performance of deep network is insufficient. In order to solve this problem, an improved U-net based image automatic segmentation and diagnosis algorithm was proposed, in which the max-pooling operation in original U-net model was replaced by the convolution operation to keep more feature information. Firstly, the regions of 128×128 were extracted from all slices of the patients as data samples. Secondly, the patient samples were divided into training sample set and testing sample set, and data augmentation was performed on the training samples. Finally, all the training samples were adopted to train the model. Compared with Fully Convolutional Network (FCN) model and max-pooling based U-net model, DSC and CR coefficients of the proposed method achieve the best results, while PM coefficient is 2.55 percentage lower than the maximum value in the two comparison models, and Average Symmetric Surface Distance is slightly higher than the minimum value of the two comparison models by 0.004. Accurate and efficient extraction of cultivated land data is of great significance for agricultural resource monitoring and national food security. Deep-learning-based classification of remote-sensing images overcomes the two difficulties of traditional learning methods (e.g., support vector machine (SVM), K-nearest neighbors (KNN), and random forest (RF)) when extracting the cultivated land: (1) the limited performance when extracting the same land-cover type with the high intra-class spectral variation, such as cultivated land with both vegetation and non-vegetation cover, and (2) the limited generalization ability for handling a large dataset to apply the model to different locations. However, the "pooling" process in most deep convolutional networks, which attempts to enlarge the sensing field of the kernel by involving the upscale process, leads to significant detail loss in the output, including the edges, gradients, and image texture details. To solve this problem, in this study we proposed a new end-to-end extraction algorithm, a high-resolution U-Net (HRU-Net), to preserve the image details by improving the skip connection structure and the loss function of the original U-Net. The proposed HRU-Net was tested in Xinjiang Province, China to extract the cultivated land from Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) images. The result showed that the HRU-Net achieved better performance (Acc: 92.81%; kappa: 0.81; F1-score: 0.90) than the U-Net++ (Acc: 91.74%; kappa: 0.79; F1-score: 0.89), the original U-Net (Acc: 89.83%; kappa: 0.74; F1-score: 0.86), and the Random Forest model (Acc: 76.13%; kappa: 0.48; F1-score: 0.69). The robustness of the proposed model for the intra-class spectral variation and the accuracy of the edge details were also compared, and this showed that the HRU-Net obtained more accurate edge details and had less influence from the intra-class spectral variation.
