The imperative for lightweighting technologies, paramount in mission-critical cyber-physical systems (CPSs) including aerospace, automotive and allied sectors, hinges upon optimizing energy efficiency and curbing product weight. Honeycomb structures, celebrated for their exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, have indisputably guided the pursuit of lightweight design. This paper expounds upon the versatility of honeycomb structures by scrutinizing their in-plane mechanical attributes. Leveraging finite element simulations and polynomial fitting, we enhance the prevailing equivalent elastic modulus model for uniform honeycomb structures, expanding its domain to encompass a broader spectrum of relative density values. Deliberations ensue concerning the model's constraints and its inapplicability to nonuniform honeycomb structures. The investigation introduces nodes as pivotal influencers in the mechanical comportment of nonuniform honeycomb structures, delineating the nexus between the equivalent elastic modulus and node dimensions through a fusion of finite element simulations and mechanical experimentation. Furthermore, this research delves into the tenets and constructs of density-based variable density methodologies within the ambit of topology optimization, with an overarching goal of maximizing stiffness. We furnish a holistic design protocol for optimizing honeycomb structures, underscored by a pragmatic instantiation of the density-based variable density approach. Scrutinizing the geometric interplay between honeycomb structures and design spaces, we posit an innovative paradigm employing concentric circles to approximate cellular envelopes, streamlining numerical cartography and the conversion of optimization outputs into variable density honeycomb configurations. Evaluation of the in-plane mechanical attributes of variable density honeycomb structures reveals that TPU material augments the resilience of both uniform and variable density honeycomb structures, whereas topology optimization amplifies specific stiffness and resilience modulus in variable density honeycomb structures relative to their uniform counterparts. Highlights: The stable periodic porous shielding materials were prepared by combining the strategies of 3D printing and metamaterial design. The relationship between porous material structure and electromagnetic interference shielding efficiency (EMI SE) effectiveness was deeply explored, revealing the important structural parameters for realizing tunable EMI SE property. The optimized design of the periodic porous shielding box achieves effective EMI shielding in a wide wavelength range (over 2.4 GHz). The new-generation electronic components require a balance between electromagnetic interference shielding efficiency and open structure factors such as ventilation and heat dissipation. In addition, realizing the tunable shielding of porous shields over a wide range of wavelengths is even more challenging. In this study, the well-prepared thermoplastic polyurethane/carbon nanotubes composites were used to fabricate the novel periodic porous flexible metamaterials using fused deposition modeling 3D printing. Particularly, the investigation focuses on optimization of pore geometry, size, dislocation configuration and material thickness, thus establishing a clear correlation between structural parameters and shielding property. Both experimental and simulation results have validated the superior shielding performance of hexagon derived honeycomb structure over other designs, and proposed the failure shielding size (Df ≈λ/8 − λ/5) and critical inclined angle (θf ≈43° − 48°), which could be used as new benchmarks for tunable electromagnetic shielding. In addition, the proper regulation of the material thickness could remarkably enhance the maximum shielding capability (85 − 95 dB) and absorption coefficient A (over 0.83). The final innovative design of the porous shielding box also exhibits good shielding effectiveness across a broad frequency range (over 2.4 GHz), opening up novel pathways for individualized and diversified shielding solutions. This study proposes a new, doubly re-entrant auxetic unit-cell design that is based on the widely used auxetic honeycomb structure. Our objective was to develop a structure that preserves and enhances the advantages of the auxetic honeycomb while eliminating all negative aspects. The doubly re-entrant geometry design aims to enhance the mechanical properties, while eliminating the buckling deformation characteristic of the re-entrant deformation mechanism. The effects of the geometric modification are described and evaluated using two parameters, offset and deg. A series of experiments were conducted on a wide range of parameters based on these two parameters. Specimens were printed via the vat photopolymerization process and were subjected to a compression test. Our aim was to investigate the mechanical properties (energy absorption and compressive force) and the deformation behaviour of these specimens in relation to the relevant parameters. The novel geometry achieved the intended properties, outperforming the original auxetic honeycomb structure. Increasing the offset and deg parameters results in increasing the energy absorption capability (up to 767%) and the maximum compressive force (up to 17 times). The right parameter choice eliminates buckling and results in continuous auxetic behaviour. Honeycomb structures made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) are increasingly used in the aerospace field due to their excellent energy absorption capability. Attention has been paid to CFRP structures in order to accurately simulate their progressive failure behavior and discuss their ply designability. In this study, the preparation process of a CFRP corrugated sheet (half of the honeycomb structure) and a CFRP honeycomb structure was illustrated. The developed finite element method was verified by a quasi-static test, which was then used to predict the low-velocity impact (LVI) behavior of the CFRP honeycomb, and ultimately, the influence of the ply angle and number on energy absorption was discussed. The results show that the developed finite element method (including the user-defined material subroutine VUMAT) can reproduce the progressive failure behavior of the CFRP corrugated sheet under quasi-static compression and also estimate the LVI behavior. The angle and number of plies of the honeycomb structure have an obvious influence on their energy absorption under LVI. Among them, energy absorption increases with the ply number, but the specific energy absorption is basically constant. The velocity drop ratios for the five different ply angles are 79.12%, 68.49%, 66.88%, 66.86%, and 60.02%, respectively. Therefore, the honeycomb structure with [0/90]s ply angle had the best energy absorption effect. The model proposed in this paper has the potential to significantly reduce experimental expenses, while the research findings can provide valuable technical support for design optimization in aerospace vehicle structures. The sandwich panel incorporated a honeycomb core, a widely utilized composite structure recognized as a fundamental classification of composite materials. Comprised a core resembling a honeycomb, possessing thickness and softness, and is flank by rigid face sheets that sandwich various shapes and materials. This paper presents an examination of the static and dynamic analysis of lightweight plates made of aluminum honeycomb sandwich composites. Honeycomb sandwich plate samples are 300 mm long, and 300 mm wide, the heights of the core have been varied at four values ranging from 10 to 25 mm. The honeycomb core is manufactured from Aluminum material by using a novel technique namely resistance spot welding (RSW) instead of using adhesive material, which is often used when an industrial flaw is detected. Numerical optimization based on response surface methodology (RSM) and design of experiment software (DOE) was used to verify the current work. A theoretical examination of the crashworthiness behavior (maximum bending load, maximum deflection) and vibration attributes (natural frequency, damping ratio, transient temporal response) of honeycomb sandwich panels with different design parameters was also carried out. In addition, the finite element method-based ANSYS software was used to confirm the theoretical conclusions. The findings of the present work showed that the relationship between the natural frequency, core height, and cell size is direct. In contrast, the relationship between the natural frequency and the thickness of the cell wall is inverse. Conversely, the damping ratio is inversely proportional to the core height and cell size but directly proportional to the thickness of the cell wall. The study indicates that altering the core height within 10-25 mm leads to a significant increase of 82% in the natural frequency and a notable decrease of 49% in the damping ratio. These findings are based on a specific cell size value of 0.01 m and a cell wall thickness of 0.001 m. Also, the results indicate that for a given set of cell wall thickness and size values, an increase in core height from (0.01-0.025) m, leads to a reduction of the percentage of maximum response approximately 76%. Conversely, the increasing thickness of the wall of cell wall, ranging 0.3-0.7 mm with a constant core height equal to 0.015 m, resulted in a de crease of maximum transient response by 7.8%. A sandwich plate with a corrugation and auxetic honeycomb hybrid core is constructed, and its sound insulation and optimization are investigated. First, the motion governing equation of the sandwich plate is established by the third-order shear deformation theory (TSDT), and then combined with the fluid-structure coupling conditions, and the sound insulation is solved. The theoretical results are validated by COMSOL simulation results, and the effects of the structural parameter on the sound insulation are analyzed. With the continuous innovation of UAV technology, composite honeycomb sandwich structures are used more and more in the fuselage structure of UAVs, and their anti-high-speed fragment impact performance has become a concern. In order to study the influence of fragments on the damage degree of composite honeycomb structures and analyze the damage difference of different initial velocity fragments on different composite honeycomb structures, based on the numerical simulation results of high-speed impact, the energy absorption characteristics of different honeycomb sandwich structures are analyzed, and the honeycomb structure with better energy absorption is selected for 24 impact experiments. The velocity range of fragment impact is 141–368 m/s. The typical damage of the upper core layer and the lower core layer in each structure is analyzed, and the energy absorption theory is used to compare the conditions of each group. The results show that ST-3-3 has the best energy absorption characteristics. Under different velocity impacts, the energy absorption per unit volume of the ST-3-3 structure reaches 521.6~659.6 × 103 J/m3, which is about 30.6% higher than that of the same design structure. The four groups of composite honeycomb sandwich structures designed in the experiment have obvious deformation in the process of impact, except that the deformation of the bottom skin of the ST-6-6-1 structure is not obvious, and the deformation of the other three groups is more obvious with the increase in structural resistance. This research shows that the reasonable arrangement of the structure and material of the composite honeycomb sandwich can better cope with the impact of high-speed fragments and reduce the damage to the structure. The polarization balance of M1/M2 macrophages with different functions is important in osteogenesis and bone repair processes. In a previous study, we succeeded in developing honeycomb tricalcium phosphate (TCP), which is a cylindrical scaffold with a honeycomb arrangement of straight pores, and we demonstrated that TCP with 300 and 500 μm pore diameters (300TCP and 500TCP) induced bone formation within the pores. However, the details of the influence of macrophage polarization on bone formation using engineered biomaterials, especially with respect to the geometric structure of the artificial biomaterials, are unknown. In this study, we examined whether differences in bone tissue formation due to differences in TCP geometry were due to the polarity of the assembling macrophages. Immunohistochemistry for IBA-1, iNOS, and CD163 single staining was performed. The 300TCP showed a marked infiltration of iNOS-positive cells, which are thought to be M1 macrophages, during the osteogenesis process, while no involvement of CD163-positive cells, which are thought to be M2 macrophages, was observed in the TCP pores. In addition, 500TCP showed a clustering of iNOS-positive cells and CD163-positive cells at 2 weeks, suggesting the involvement of M2 macrophages in the formation of bone tissue in the TCP pores. In conclusion, we demonstrated for the first time that the geometrical structure of the artificial biomaterial, i.e., the pore size of honeycomb TCP, affects the polarization of M1/2 macrophages and bone tissue formation in TCP pores. The incorporation of viscoelastic layers in laminates can markedly enhance the damped dynamic characteristics. This study focuses on integrating viscoelastic layers into the composite facesheet of the bowtie-shaped honeycomb core composite sandwich panel (BHC-CSP). The homogenization of the damped BHC-CSP is performed by employing the variational asymptotic method. Based on the generalized total energy equation, the energy functional of the representative unit cell of the damped BHC-CSP is asymptotically analyzed. The warping function, derived following the principle of minimum potential energy, provides a basis for obtaining the corresponding Euler–Lagrange equation to ascertain the equivalent elastic properties of the damped BHC-CSP. Utilizing the developed two-dimensional equivalent model, the free-vibration characteristics of the damped BHC-CSP are examined across diverse boundary conditions while delving into the impact of an external viscous damping layer on the natural frequency of the damped BHC-CSP. The results reveal that intensified boundary constraints effectively diminish the effective vibration region of the damped BHC-CSP, thereby enhancing its overall stability. The introduction of a PMI foam layer proves effective in adjusting the stiffness and mass distribution of the damped BHC-CSP. Resonance characteristics are explored through frequency and time-domain analyses, highlighting the pivotal roles of the excitation position and receiver point in influencing the displacement and velocity responses. Although the stiffness is improved by incorporating a PMI foam layer, its effect on the damping performance of the damped BHC-CSP is minimal when compared to the T-SW308 foam layer. To optimize the assembly methods of honeycomb structures and enhance their design flexibility, this study investigated the impact mechanical responses of tandem honeycomb-core sandwich structures with varying misalignment assembly lengths. Impact tests were conducted across different energy levels on single-layer and tandem honeycomb-core sandwiches to observe their impact processes and failure behaviors. Our findings indicate that tandem honeycomb cores significantly enhance the impact resistance compared with single-layer configurations, even though a misaligned assembly can deteriorate this property. A finite element model was developed and validated experimentally; the model showed good agreement with the experiments, thereby allowing the simulation and evaluation of the impact responses. Herein, we reveal that specific misalignment lengths can either increase or decrease the impact resistance, providing insights into improving the resilience of tandem honeycomb-core structures. Our results not only contribute to enhancing the impact resistance of honeycomb-core sandwich structures but also offer a valuable basis for their practical applications in engineering. A full triangular chiral (Tri-Chi) honeycomb, combining a honeycomb structure with triangular chiral configuration, notably impacts the Poisson's ratio (PR) and stiffness. To assess the random vibration properties of a composite sandwich panel with a Tri-Chi honeycomb core (CSP-TCH), a two-dimensional equivalent Reissner–Mindlin model (2D-ERM) was created using the variational asymptotic method. The precision of the 2D-ERM in free and random vibration analysis was confirmed through numerical simulations employing 3D finite element analysis, encompassing PSD curves and RMS responses. Furthermore, the effects of selecting the model class were quantified through dynamic numerical examples. Modal analysis revealed that the relative error of the first eight natural frequencies predicted by the 2D-ERM consistently remained below 7%, with the modal cloud demonstrating high reliability. The PSD curves and their RMS values closely aligned with 3D finite element results under various boundary conditions, with a maximum error below 5%. Key factors influencing the vibration characteristics included the ligament–rib angle of the core layer and layup modes of the composite facesheets, while the rib-to-ligament thickness ratio and the aspect ratio exert minimal influence. The impact of the ligament–rib angle on the vibration properties primarily stems from the significant shift in the core layer's Poisson's ratio, transitioning from negative to positive. The inserts supporting run-flat tire (ISRFT) is mainly used in military off-road vehicles, which need to maintain high mobility after a blowout. Regulations show that the ISRFT can be driven safely for at least 100 km at a speed of 30 km/h to 40 km/h under zero-pressure conditions. However, the ISRFT generates serious heat during zero-pressure driving, which accelerates the aging of the tire rubber and degrades its performance. In order to study the thermo-mechanical coupling characteristics of the ISRFT, a three-dimensional finite element model verified by bench tests was established. Then, the stress–strain, energy loss and heat generation of the ISRFT were analyzed by the sequential thermo-mechanical coupling method to obtain the steady-state temperature field (SSTF). Finally, four kinds of honeycomb inserts bodies were designed based on the tangent method, and the SSTF of the honeycomb and the original ISRFT were compared. The results indicated that the high-temperature region of the ISRFT is concentrated in the shoulder area. For every 1 km/h increase in velocity, the temperature at the shoulder of the tire increases by approximately 1.6 °C. The SSTF of the honeycomb ISRFT is more uniformly distributed, and the maximum temperature of the shoulder decreases by about 30 °C, but the maximum temperature of the tread increases by about 40 °C. Nomex honeycomb composites are widely recognized for their advanced structural applications in the aerospace, automotive and defense industries. These materials are distinguished by exceptional characteristics such as thin cell walls and a hexagonal structure, as well as layers made of phenolic resins and aramid fibers. However, complex machining and the maintenance of high quality at a large scale presents considerable challenges. This study provides a comprehensive review of the literature on the processing of Nomex composites, highlighting the design challenges related to processing technologies, the impact of conventional and ultrasonic processing methods, and the associated mechanical properties and microstructural topographies. Moreover, it reviews research advances in machining techniques, current challenges, and future perspectives, thereby providing valuable guidance to ensure the optimal cutting of Nomex honeycomb composite structures (NHCs). Reinforced concrete (RC) walls are extensively used in civil air defense engineering and are susceptible to low-speed impacts with high energy and massive weight during service. Therefore, it is crucial to consider the impact resistance of these walls and explore effective protection methods. The honeycomb structure, known for its energy-absorbing properties, has been widely utilized in aerospace, automotive, and maritime industries. However, there is a need for more research on applying honeycomb structures in energy-absorbing protection devices in civil engineering. This study proposes the use of honeycomb sandwich panels to protect civil air defense RC walls, creating a Honeycomb Sandwich Panel Composite RC wall (HSP-RC wall). Through pendulum impact experiments, we investigated the dynamic response of RC walls, both standard and HSP-RC walls with varying honeycomb parameters, under high-energy impacts. The goal was to evaluate the impact resistance of these RC walls, analyze the deformation differences among different HSP-RC walls, and examine the influence of honeycomb parameters on the impact protection effectiveness. The research results indicate that honeycomb sandwich panels can provide impact protection for RC walls by absorbing energy, and their protection effect is related to the parameters of the honeycomb core layer. Composite materials are widely used in the new generation of aviation equipment due to their comprehensive performance. However, the part fixture is usually difficult during the machining of composites with soft and brittle characteristics, such as the Nomex honeycomb. Therefore, the holding method based on the false boss connection can be utilized due to its advantages of low cost, less pollution, and a short preparation period. In this study, the method to determine and optimize the critical parameters of the false boss design is proposed to address the issue that they previously relied heavily on the experience of engineers, which often results in much waste of materials. To determine the critical parameters, a simulation model is constructed for Nomex honeycomb core parts machining with a false boss holding. Based on the simulation model, the stability of the machining process is analyzed, and the weak link of the false boss between different milling areas is studied. The problem of covering a two-dimensional bounded set with a fixed number of minimum-radius identical disks is studied in the present work. Bounds on the optimal radius are obtained for a certain class of nonsmooth domains, and an asymptotic expansion of the bounds as the number of disks goes to infinity is provided. The proof is based on the approximation of the set to be covered by hexagonal honeycombs and on the thinnest covering property of the regular hexagonal lattice arrangement in the whole plane. The dependence of the optimal radius on the number of disks is also investigated numerically using a shape-optimization approach, and theoretical and numerical convergence rates are compared. An initial point construction strategy is introduced, which, in the context of a multistart method, finds good-quality solutions to the problem under consideration. Extensive numerical experiments with a variety of polygonal regions and regular polygons illustrate the introduced approach. The honeycomb structure is a topological structure with excellent performance that stems from the properties of the basic units of the structure. Different structural features of basic units may lead to different mechanical characteristics in the whole part. In this study, a novel hexagonal cell body topology structure (NH) was designed and manufactured by the fused deposition modeling (FDM) technique to explore the effects on mechanical properties. The tensile and impact performance of the NH structure were compared with the regular hexagonal honeycomb structure (HH), and the influence of different unit single-cell sizes on the impact performance of the NH structure was investigated. The force transmission of the basic units of the NH structure was revealed through finite element analysis. The results indicate that both the tensile and impact performances of the NH structure have been improved compared to the HH structure. The improvement is due to the better force transmission capability of the basic units of the NH structure, leading to a more uniform stress distribution. Moreover, excessively large or small single-cell sizes of the NH structure will reduce the overall structure's impact resistance. Background: Basosquamous carcinoma (BSC) is a rare and aggressive nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) that exhibits features of both BCC and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The gold standard for diagnosis is histopathological examination. BSC is often challenging to diagnose and manage due to its mixed histological features and potential for aggressive behavior Aim: To identify specific features aiding clinicians in differentiating BSCs using non‐invasive diagnostic techniques. Methods: We conducted a retrospective descriptive, monocentric study of the epidemiological clinical, dermoscopic, and reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) features of histopathologically proven BSCs diagnosed between 2010 and 2023. A total of 192 cases were selected. Results: The study population consisted of 17 men (60.9%). Total 95.8% of patients at the time of diagnosis were ≥50 years. BSC occurred in the head and neck area in 124 cases (63.1%) of which 65 (33.9%) were in the H‐zone. For 47.4% of patients, BSC presented as a macule with undefined clinical margins (43.3%). Dermoscopic images were available for 98 cases: the most common parameter was the presence of whitish structureless areas (59 [60.2%]), keratin masses (58 [59.2%]), superficial scales, and ulceration or blood crusts (49 [50%] both). Vessels pattern analysis revealed hairpin vessels (exclusively) and linear irregular vessels as the most frequent (55 [56.1%] both). RCM examination was performed in 21 cases which revealed specific SCC features such as solar elastosis (19 [90.5%]), atypical honeycomb pattern (17 [89%]), proliferation of atypical keratinocytes (16 [80%]) combined with BCC' ones as bright tumor islands (12 [57.8%]), and cleft‐like dark spaces (11 [53.4%]). Discussion: Our study reflects the largest cohort of BSCs from a single institution. We described an incidence rate of 4.7%, higher than reported in the Literature, with the involvement of patients ≥50years in almost 96% of cases and an overall male predominance. At clinical examination, BSC was described as a hyperkeratotic macule with undefined clinical margins with one or more dermoscopic SCC' features, whereas the presence of typical BCC aspects was observed in less than 10% of cases, differently from what was previously reported. At RCM analysis, BSCs presented with an atypical honeycomb pattern with proliferation of atypical keratinocytes, hyperkeratosis, and in nearly 55% of patients, bright tumor islands with cleft‐like dark spaces. In this paper, we propose a precise Wigner–Weyl calculus for the models defined on the honeycomb lattice. We construct two symbols of operators: the B symbol, which is similar to the one introduced by F. Buot, and the W (or, Weyl) symbol. The latter possesses the set of useful properties. These identities allow us to use it in physical applications. In particular, we derive topological expression for the Hall conductivity through the Wigner-transformed Green function. This expression may be used for the description of the systems with artificial honeycomb lattice, when magnetic flux through the lattice cell is of the order of elementary quantum of magnetic flux. 3D printing technology is the new frontier in building construction. It is especially useful for making small structures within a short period. Full construction, including interior partitions and exterior façades, can be achieved with this technology. This paper proposes a parametric Voronoi tessellations model for quickly generating and fabricating 3D-printed hexagonal honeycomb partitions for interior design. Comprehensive experimental testing was conducted to characterize the mechanical properties and investigate the energy absorption characteristics of the proposed 3D-printed hexagonal honeycomb while comparing it to alternative hexagonal honeycomb structures. The tests included tensile testing (ASTM-D638) of the printed Polylactic Acid (PLA) material, especially with the almost total absence of conducted research that reported mechanical properties for 3D printed material with low infill percentages such as 10%. In addition, an in-plane quasi-static axial compression testing of the lightweight honeycomb structures was also conducted on the printed structure with the same low infill percentage. Compared to non-Voronoi honeycomb structures, the Voronoi honeycomb resulted in superior mechanical and energy absorption properties with energy absorption values ranging from 350 to 435 J and crash force efficiency being 1.42 to 1.65. This study aims to maximize the post-harvest quality of Moutan Cortex and reduce energy consumption. Radio frequency vacuum (RFV) technology was used to dehydrate Moutan Cortex in this study to investigate the effects of different drying temperatures, plate spacing, and vacuum degree on the drying kinetics, physicochemical quality, and microstructure of Moutan Cortex. The results showed that RFV drying shortened the dehydration time of the Moutan Cortex by 10.71–28.57% and increased the drying rate by 15.79–54.39% compared to hot-air drying. The best color (∆E = 6.08 ± 0.28, BI = 26.97 ± 0.98) and relatively high retention of polysaccharides, total phenolics, total flavonoids, antioxidant properties, paeonol, gallic acid, paeoniflorin, and benzoylpaeoniflorin contents were observed in the dried products of Moutan Cortex at a drying temperature of 50 °C, spacing of 90 mm, and vacuum of 0.025 MPa. Analyzing the microstructure, it was found that RFV drying could effectively inhibit the shrinkage and collapse of the cellular structure, and a regular and loose honeycomb pore structure appeared inside the samples, which contributed to the rapid migration of the internal moisture. The primary challenge during the secondary bonding process of full-height honeycomb sandwich structures is the aramid honeycomb core's height shrinkage. This paper systematically investigated the height evolution behavior of the honeycomb core by using a creep testing machine. The results showed that the out-of-plane compression deformation curve of aramid honeycomb cores is mainly divided into three stages: the dehumidification stage, the pressurization stage and the creep stage. Under conditions of high temperature and pressure, height shrinkage was attributed to the dehydration caused by moisture infiltration, and the compression creep resulted from the slippage of polymer molecular chains. Dehydration shrinkage is stable, whereas compression creep reflects typical viscoelastic polymer characteristics. By employing the viscoelastic Burgers mechanical model and applying the nonlinear surface fitting method, the total height shrinkage deformation behavior of the aramid honeycomb core during the curing process can be accurately predicted by summing the above three stages. Aperiodic crystals constitute a class of materials that includes incommensurate (IC) modulated structures and quasicrystals (QCs). Although these two categories share a common foundation in the concept of superspace, the relationship between them has remained enigmatic and largely unexplored. Here, we show "any metallic-mean" QCs, surpassing the confines of Penrose-like structures, and explore their connection with IC modulated structures. In contrast to periodic approximants of QCs, our work introduces the pivotal role of "aperiodic approximants", articulated through a series of k-th metallic-mean tilings serving as aperiodic approximants for the honeycomb crystal, while simultaneously redefining this tiling as a metallic-mean IC modulated structure, highlighting the intricate interplay between these crystallographic phenomena. We extend our findings to real-world applications, discovering these tiles in a terpolymer/homopolymer blend and applying our QC theory to a colloidal simulation displaying planar IC structures. In these structures, domain walls are viewed as essential components of a quasicrystal, introducing additional dimensions in superspace. Our research provides a fresh perspective on the intricate world of aperiodic crystals, shedding light on their broader implications for domain wall structures across various fields. Aperiodic crystals, including modulated structures and quasicrystals, are fascinating, but their relationship to each other is enigmatic. Honeycomb‐layered oxides are a class of cathode materials for sodium‐ion batteries with great potential due to their high voltage and high capacity. However, the structural instability and voltage fading during cycling limit their practical application. Herein, it is revealed that Te substitution into Na3Ni2SbO6 induces a new dual‐honeycomb structure, which can elevate the average discharge voltage of the cathode materials from 3.2 to 3.8 V with improved cycle stability and alleviated voltage decay. Synchrotron operando X‐ray diffraction demonstrates that Te substitution can suppress the O3−P3−O1‐phase transition during charge and discharge processes effectively, benefited from the strong TeO covalent bonds. The resulted Na2.2Ni2Sb0.2Te0.8O6 cathode exhibits a high capacity retention of 70.9% after 1000 cycles at 1C, with an elevated operating voltage of ≈3.8 V. Theoretical calculations reveal that the introduced TeO bonds break the symmetric distribution of charge in Ni/Sb honeycomb structure and elevate the operation voltage by increased valence band width. In this paper, a new type of auxetic honeycomb is designed, which introduces arc walls into the concave hexagonal honeycomb cells and has higher specific energy absorption. The deformation modes and energy absorption of the designed honeycomb are analyzed by using three methods including finite element, compression experiment and machine learning methods. A fully connected two-hidden layer backpropagation deep neural network (BP-DNN) is developed to predict the energy absorptions of the honeycomb with different geometric parameters. It is found that the error of the validation set is low, and the average correlation coefficient of the validation set is 99.2%, which indicates that the neural network can obtain good predictions. The sensitivity analysis of the input parameters shows that the thickness t has the highest sensitivity, and the ratio of the length of the straight wall to the height has the lowest sensitivity to the energy. In addition, the neural network developed can also predict the mechanical properties of the honeycombs outside the parameter range of the training set and the results are consistent with that of the sensitivity analysis. The DNN provides a fast and accurate method for the energy absorption of honeycombs, which is expected to speed up the optimization and design process of honeycomb structures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Highlights: MIL-88C (Fe) with varying aspect ratios as a precursor was synthesized by regulating oil bath conditions, followed by one-step thermal decomposition to obtain carbon-coated iron-based composites. High-efficiency microwave absorption properties were achieved with RLmin value of -67.4 dB (2.13 mm) and wide effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.52 GHz (1.90 mm) under the low filler loading. A symmetric gradient honeycomb structure was constructed utilizing the high-frequency structure simulator, achieving an EAB of 14.6 GHz and a RLmin of -59.0 dB. The impedance matching of absorbers is a vital factor affecting their microwave absorption (MA) properties. In this work, we controllably synthesized Material of Institute Lavoisier 88C (MIL-88C) with varying aspect ratios (AR) as a precursor by regulating oil bath conditions, followed by one-step thermal decomposition to obtain carbon-coated iron-based composites. Modifying the precursor MIL-88C (Fe) preparation conditions, such as the molar ratio between metal ions and organic ligands (M/O), oil bath temperature, and oil bath time, influenced the phases, graphitization degree, and AR of the derivatives, enabling low filler loading, achieving well-matched impedance, and ensuring outstanding MA properties. The MOF-derivatives 2 (MD2)/polyvinylidene Difluoride (PVDF), MD3/PVDF, and MD4/PVDF absorbers all exhibited excellent MA properties with optimal filler loadings below 20 wt% and as low as 5 wt%. The MD2/PVDF (5 wt%) achieved a maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.52 GHz (1.90 mm). The MD3/PVDF (10 wt%) possessed a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) value of − 67.4 at 12.56 GHz (2.13 mm). A symmetric gradient honeycomb structure (SGHS) was constructed utilizing the high-frequency structure simulator (HFSS) to further extend the EAB, achieving an EAB of 14.6 GHz and a RLmin of − 59.0 dB. This study investigates lightweight and efficient candidates for sound absorption to address the growing demand for sustainable and eco-friendly materials in noise attenuation. Juncus effusus (JE) is a natural fiber known for its unique three-dimensional network, providing a viable and sustainable filler for enhanced sound absorption in honeycomb panels. Microperforated-panel (MPP) honeycomb absorbers incorporating JE fillers were fabricated and designed, focusing on optimizing the absorber designs by varying JE filler densities, geometrical arrangements, and MPP parameters. At optimal filling densities, the MPP-type honeycomb structures filled with JE fibers achieved high noise reduction coefficients (NRC) of 0.5 and 0.7 at 20 mm and 50 mm thicknesses, respectively. Using an analytical model and an artificial neural network (ANN) model, the sound absorption characteristics of these absorbers were successfully predicted. This study demonstrates the potential of JE fibers in improving noise mitigation strategies across different industries, offering more sustainable and efficient solutions for construction and transportation. This study first draws inspiration from the dual biomimetic design of plant cell walls and honeycomb structures, drawing on their structural characteristics to design a flexible shell structure that can achieve significant deformation and withstand large loads. Based on the staggered bonding of this flexible shell structure, we propose a new design scheme for a large-load pneumatic soft arm and establish a mathematical model for its flexibility and load capacity. The extension and bending deformation of this new type of soft arm come from the geometric variability of flexible shell structures, which can be controlled through two switches, namely, deflation and inflation, to achieve extension or bending actions. The experimental results show that under a driving pressure within the range of 150 kpa, the maximum elongation of the soft arm reaches 23.17 cm, the maximum bending angle is 94.2 degrees, and the maximum load is 2.83 N. This type of soft arm designed based on dual bionic inspiration can have both a high load capacity and flexibility. Odd-parity multipoles in crystals manifest themselves not only in their peculiar electronic orderings but also in unconventional parity-violating physical phenomena. We here report the emergence of odd-parity multipoles by considering staggered orbital orderings in a locally noncentrosymmetric crystal system with the global inversion center but without the inversion center at each lattice site. We show that various odd-parity multipoles, such as the electric toroidal monopole, electric dipole, and electric toroidal quadrupole, are realized depending on the type of orbital orderings in the one-dimensional zigzag chain. Such odd-parity multipoles give rise to an antisymmetric spin splitting in the electronic band structure with the aid of the relativistic spin–orbit coupling. We also show that similar states with odd-parity multipoles are realized in other locally noncentrosymmetric crystals, such as the two-dimensional honeycomb and three-dimensional diamond structures. This study investigates free vibration analysis of a microplate featuring a honeycomb (HC) core and incorporates two nanocomposite piezoelectric (NP) layers. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are hired to enhance the electro-mechanical performance of the piezoelectric patches, which are subjected to an externally applied electric voltage. All layers are tightly bonded together and are supported by an elastic substrate according to the Pasternak model, capable of withstanding both normal and shear loads. To establish the kinematic relations, a trigonometric plate theory is employed. The governing equations of motion are deduced through the application of Hamilton's principle and variational technique. The modified strain gradient theory, which includes three material length-scale parameters (MLSPs), is used to account for the scale effect. An analytical approach based on Fourier series functions is employed to solve the differential equations of motion. Subsequently, the impact of various factors, such as the geometrical characteristics of the HC core, distribution patterns of CNTs, and other significant parameters, on the normalized frequencies of the model is assessed after validating the accuracy of the results. In order to obtain a lightweight, high-strength, and customizable cellular structure to meet the needs of modern production and life, the mechanical properties of four thickness gradient honeycomb structures were studied. In this paper, four types of honeycomb structure specimens with the same porosity and different Poisson's ratios were designed and manufactured by using SLA 3D-printing technology, including the honeycomb, square honeycomb, quasi-square honeycomb, and re-entrant honeycomb structures. Based on the plane compression mechanical properties and failure mode analysis of these specimens, the thickness gradient is applied to the honeycomb structure, and four structural forms of the thickness gradient honeycomb structure are formed. The experimental results show that the thickness gradient honeycomb structure exhibits better mechanical properties than the honeycomb structure with a uniform cellular wall thickness. In the studied thickness gradient honeycomb structure, the mechanical properties of the whole structure can be significantly improved by increasing the thickness of cell walls at the upper and lower ends of the structure. The wall thickness, arrangement order, shape, and Poisson's ratio of the cell all have a significant impact on the mechanical properties of the specimens. To investigate the influence of water content on the rockburst phenomena in tunnels with horizontal joints, experiments were conducted on simulated rock specimens exhibiting five distinct levels of water absorption. Real-time monitoring of the entire blasting process was facilitated through a high-speed camera system, while the microscopic structure of the rockburst debris was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and a particle size analyzer. The experimental findings revealed that under varying degrees of water absorption, the specimens experienced three stages: debris ejection; rockburst; and debris spalling. As water content increased gradually, the intensity of rockburst in the specimens was mitigated. This was substantiated by a decline in peak stress intensity, a decrease in elastic modulus, delayed manifestation of pre-peak stress drop, enhanced amplitude, diminished elastic potential energy, and augmented dissipation energy, resulting in an expanded angle of rockburst debris ejection. With increasing water content, the bond strength between micro-particles was attenuated, resulting in the disintegration of the bonding material. Deformation failure was defined by the expansion of minuscule pores, gradual propagation of micro-cracks, augmentation of fluffy fine particles, exacerbation of structural surface damage akin to a honeycomb structure, diminishment of particle diameter, and a notable increase in quantity. Furthermore, the augmentation of secondary cracks and shear cracks, coupled with the enlargement of spalling areas, signified the escalation of deformation failure. Simultaneously, the total mass of rockburst debris gradually diminished, accompanied by a corresponding decrease in the proportion of micro and fine particles within the debris. The expansive utility of polymeric 3D-printing technologies and demand for high- performance lightweight structures has prompted the emergence of various carbon-reinforced polymer composite filaments. However, detailed characterization of the processing–microstructure–property relationships of these materials is still required to realize their full potential. In this study, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and two carbon-reinforced ABS variants, with either carbon nanotubes (CNT) or 5 wt.% chopped carbon fiber (CF), were designed in a bio-inspired honeycomb geometry. These structures were manufactured by fused filament fabrication (FFF) and investigated across a range of layer thicknesses and hexagonal (hex) sizes. Microscopy of material cross-sections was conducted to evaluate the relationship between print parameters and porosity. Analyses determined a trend of reduced porosity with lower print-layer heights and hex sizes compared to larger print-layer heights and hex sizes. Mechanical properties were evaluated through compression testing, with ABS specimens achieving higher compressive yield strength, while CNT-ABS achieved higher ultimate compressive strength due to the reduction in porosity and subsequent strengthening. A trend of decreasing strength with increasing hex size across all materials was supported by the negative correlation between porosity and increasing print-layer height and hex size. We elucidated the potential of honeycomb ABS, CNT-ABS, and ABS-5wt.% CF polymer composites for novel 3D-printed structures. These studies were supported by the development of a predictive classification and regression supervised machine learning model with 0.92 accuracy and a 0.96 coefficient of determination to help inform and guide design for targeted performance. Humanity is often fascinated by structures and materials developed by Nature. While structural materials such as wood have been widely studied, the structural and mechanical properties of fungi are still largely unknown. One of the structurally interesting fungi is the polypore Fomes fomentarius. The present study deals with the investigation of the light but robust fruiting body of F. fomentarius. The four segments of the fruiting body (crust, trama, hymenium, and mycelial core) were examined. The comprehensive analysis included structural, chemical, and mechanical characterization with particular attention to cell wall composition, such as chitin/chitosan and glucan content, degree of deacetylation, and distribution of trace elements. The hymenium exhibited the best mechanical properties even though having the highest porosity. Our results suggest that this outstanding strength is due to the high proportion of skeletal hyphae and the highest chitin/chitosan content in the cell wall, next to its honeycomb structure. In addition, an increased calcium content was found in the hymenium and crust, and the presence of calcium oxalate crystals was confirmed by SEM-EDX. Interestingly, layers with different densities as well as layers of varying calcium and potassium depletion were found in the crust. Our results show the importance of considering the different structural and compositional characteristics of the segments when developing fungal-inspired materials and products. Artificial 1D and 2D lattices have emerged as a powerful platform for the emulation of lattice Hamiltonians, the fundamental study of collective many‐body effects, and phenomena arising from non‐trivial topology. Exciton‐polaritons, bosonic part‐light and part‐matter quasiparticles, combine pronounced nonlinearities with the possibility of on‐chip implementation. In this context, organic semiconductors embedded in microcavities have proven to be versatile candidates to study nonlinear many‐body physics and bosonic condensation, and in contrast to most inorganic systems, they allow the use at ambient conditions since they host ultra‐stable Frenkel excitons. A well‐controlled, high‐quality optical lattice is implemented that accommodates light‐matter quasiparticles. The realized polariton graphene presents with excellent cavity quality factors, showing distinct signatures of Dirac cone and flatband dispersions as well as polariton lasing at room temperature. This is realized by filling coupled dielectric microcavities with the fluorescent protein mCherry. The emergence of a coherent polariton condensate at ambient conditions are demonstrated, taking advantage of coupling conditions as precise and controllable as in state‐of‐the‐art inorganic semiconductor‐based systems, without the limitations of e.g. lattice matching in epitaxial growth. This progress allows straightforward extension to more complex systems, such as the study of topological phenomena in 2D lattices including topological lasers and non‐Hermitian optics. Pulsed electric field (PEF) pretreatment has been shown to improve the quality of dried fruits in terms of antioxidant activity and bioactive compounds. In this study, apricots were pretreated with PEF at different field strengths (0.7 kV/cm; 1.2 kV/cm and 1.8 kv/cm) at a frequency of 50 Hz, and electric pulses coming in every 20 µs for 30 s, prior to freeze−drying and air−drying treatments. PEF treatments were carried out at different field strengths. The impact of different pretreatments on the quality of dried apricot was determined in terms of physical properties, antioxidant activity, total phenolic content, and metabolite profile. PEF pretreatments significantly (p < 0.05) increased firmness of all the air−dried samples the most by 4–7−fold and most freeze−dried apricot samples (44.2% to 98.64%) compared to the control group. However, PEF treatment at 1.2 kV/cm did not have any effect on hardness of the freeze−dried sample. The moisture content and water activity of freeze−dried samples were found to be significantly lower than those of air−dried samples. Scanning electron microscopy results revealed that air drying caused the loss of fruit structure due to significant moisture loss, while freeze drying preserved the honeycomb structure of the apricot flesh, with increased pore sizes observed at higher PEF intensities. PEF pretreatment also significantly increased the antioxidant activity and total phenol content of both air−dried and freeze−dried apricots. PEF treatment also significantly (p < 0.05) increased amino acid and fatty acid content of air−dried samples but significantly (p < 0.05) decreased sugar content. Almost all amino acids (except tyrosine, alanine, and threonine) significantly increased with increasing PEF intensity. The results of this study suggest that PEF pretreatment can influence the quality of air−dried and freeze−dried apricots in terms antioxidant activity and metabolites such as amino acids, fatty acids, sugar, organic acids, and phenolic compounds. Honeycomb sandwich structures are widely used in lightweight applications. Usually, these structures are subjected to extreme loading conditions, leading to potential failures due to delamination and debonding between the face sheet and the honeycomb core. Therefore, the present study is focused on the mechanical characterisation of honeycomb sandwich structures fabricated using advanced 3D printing technology. The continuous carbon fibres and ONYX-FR matrix materials have been used as raw materials for 3D printing of the specimens needed for various mechanical characterization testing; ONYX-FR is a commercial trade name for flame retardant short carbon fibre filled nylon filaments, used as a reinforcing material in Morkforged 3D printer. Edgewise and flatwise compression tests have been conducted for different configurations of honeycomb sandwich structures, fabricated by varying the face sheet thickness and core cell size, while keeping the core cell thickness and core height constant. Based on these tests, the proposed structure with face sheet thickness of 3.2 mm and a core cell size of 12.7 mm exhibited the highest energy absorption and prevented delamination and debonding failures. Therefore, 3D printing technology can also be considered as an alternative method for sandwich structure fabrication. The high variability of shock in terrorist attacks poses a threat to people's lives and properties, necessitating the development of more effective protective structures. This study focuses on the angle gradient and proposes four different configurations of concave hexagonal honeycomb structures. The structures' macroscopic deformation behavior, stress-strain relationship, and energy dissipation characteristics are evaluated through quasi-static compression and Hopkinson pressure bar impact experiments. The study reveals that, under varying strain rates, the structures deform starting from the weak layer and exhibit significant interlayer separation. Additionally, interlayer shear slip becomes more pronounced with increasing strain rate. In terms of quasi-static compression, symmetric gradient structures demonstrate superior energy absorption, particularly the symmetric negative gradient structure (SNG-SMS) with a specific energy absorption of 13.77 J/cm³. For dynamic impact, unidirectional gradient structures exhibit exceptional energy absorption, particularly the unidirectional positive gradient honeycomb structure (UPG-SML) with outstanding mechanical properties. The angle gradient design plays a crucial role in determining the structure's stability and deformation mode during impact. Fewer interlayer separations result in a more pronounced negative Poisson's ratio effect and enhance the structure's energy absorption capacity. This paper introduces a new type of flexible rudder surface based on the cosine-type zero Poisson's ratio honeycomb to enhance the adaptive capabilities of aircraft and enable multi-condition, rudderless flight. The zero Poisson's ratio honeycomb structure exhibits exceptional in-plane and out-of-plane deformation capacities, as well as a high load-bearing capability. To investigate the deformation characteristics of flexible rudder surfaces utilizing cosine honeycomb structures, this study undertakes a comprehensive investigation through finite element simulation and 3D printing experiments. Moreover, this study analyzed the impact of honeycomb parameters and layout on the deflection performance and weight. The flexible rudder surface, fabricated from nylon, achieves smooth and consistent chordwise bending deformation, as well as uniform spanwise deformation within a tolerance of ±25°, and the maximum equivalent stress observed was 31.99 MPa, which is within the material's allowable stress limits (50 MPa). Finite element simulation results indicate that once the deflection angle of the rocker exceeds 15°, a discernible deviation arises between the actual deflection angle of the flexible control surface and that of the rocker. Furthermore, this deviation escalates with increasing rocker rotation angles, and this discrepancy can be mitigated by augmenting the number of cosine honeycomb cells within the flexible rudder surface. Finally, a prototype of the flexible rudder surface was successfully produced using 3D printing technology, and the experimental results confirmed the deformation behavior, aligning with simulation outcomes with a deviation of less than 20%. Auxetic lattice structures are three-dimensionally designed intricately repeating units with multifunctionality in three-dimensional space, especially with the emergence of additive manufacturing (AM) technologies. In aerospace applications, these structures have potential for use in high-performance lightweight components, contributing to enhanced efficiency. This paper investigates the design, numerical simulation, manufacturing, and testing of three-dimensional (3D) star-shaped lattice structures with tailored mechanical properties. Finite element analysis (FEA) was employed to examine the effect of a lattice unit's vertex angle and strut diameter on the lattice structure's Poisson's ratio and effective elastic modulus. The strut diameter was altered from 0.2 to 1 mm, while the star-shaped vertex angle was adjusted from 15 to 90 degrees. Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), an AM technique, was employed to experimentally fabricate 3D star-shaped honeycomb structures made of Ti6Al4V alloy, which were then subjected to compression testing to verify the modelling results. The effective elastic modulus was shown to decrease when increasing the vertex angle or decreasing the strut diameter, while the Poisson's ratio had a complex behaviour depending on the geometrical characteristics of the structure. By tailoring the unit vertex angle and strut diameter, the printed structures exhibited negative, zero, and positive Poisson's ratios, making them applicable across a wide range of aerospace components such as impact absorption systems, aircraft wings, fuselage sections, landing gear, and engine mounts. Auxetic structures, with re-entrant (inverted hexagonal or bow tie) unit cells, have received considerable interest due to their negative Poisson's ratio property that results in superior mechanical properties. This study proposes a simple method to create non-homogeneous re-entrant honeycombs by modifying the size of chevron crosslinks. The various structural designs were conceived by changing the geometrical dimensions of the crosslinks, namely the length ( l c l ) and the thickness ( t c l ), while maintaining the parameters of the re-entrant cell walls. The influence of the design parameters of chevron crosslinks on the mechanical behaviour of additively manufactured re-entrant honeycombs was investigated experimentally and numerically. The structures were fabricated using the Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) technique from polylactic acid (PLA) plastic. In-plane quasi-static compression tests were conducted to extract the elastic, plastic, and densification properties of the structures. Furthermore, a Finite Element (FE) model was developed via LS-DYNA R11.0 software, validated experimentally, and was then used to obtain a deeper insight into the deformation behaviour and auxetic performance of various designs. The statistical mechanical behavior of weakly nonlinear multimoded optical settings has been attracting increased interest over the last few years. The main purpose of this work is to numerically investigate the main factors that affect the thermalization process in photonic lattices. In particular, we find that lattices with identically selected properties (such as temperature, coupling coefficient, lattice size, and excitation conditions) can exhibit very different thermalization dynamics and, thus, thermalization distances. Our investigation is focused on two different two-dimensional lattices: the honeycomb lattice and the triangular lattice. Our numerical results show that, independently of the excitation conditions, the honeycomb lattice always thermalizes faster than the triangular lattice. We mainly explain this behavior by the quasilinear spectrum that promotes wave-mixing in the honeycomb lattice in comparison to the power-like spectrum of the triangular lattice. In addition, we investigate the combined effects of temperature as well as the sign and magnitude of the nonlinearity. Switching either the sign of the Kerr nonlinear coefficient or the sign of the temperature can lead to significant differences in the thermalization dynamics, a phenomenon that can be physically explained in terms of wave instabilities. Larger absolute values of the temperature |T| result in more uniform distributions for the power occupation numbers and faster thermalization speeds. Finally, as expected, increasing the magnitude of the nonlinearity results in accelerated thermalization. Our findings provide valuable insights into optical thermalization in discrete systems, where experimental realization may bring about new possibilities for light manipulation and applications. The free vibration analysis of a rotating sandwich conical shell with a reentrant auxetic honeycomb core and homogenous isotropic face layers reinforced with a ring support is studied. The shell is modeled utilizing the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) incorporating the relative, centripetal, and Coriolis accelerations alongside the initial hoop tension created by the rotation. The governing equations, compatibility conditions, and boundary conditions are attained using Hamilton's principle. Utilizing trigonometric functions, an analytical solution is derived in the circumferential direction, and a numerical one is presented in the meridional direction via the differential quadrature method (DQM). The effects of various factors on the critical rotational speeds and forward and backward frequencies of the shell are studied. The present work is the first theoretical work regarding the dynamic analysis of a rotating sandwich conical shell with an auxetic honeycomb core strengthened with a ring support. Honeycomb sandwich panels are utilized in many industrial applications due to their high bending resistance relative to their weight. Defects between the core and the facesheet compromise their integrity and efficiency due to the inability to transfer loads. The material system studied in the present paper is a unidirectional carbon fiber composite facesheet with a honeycomb core with a variety of defects at the interface between the two material systems. Current nondestructive techniques focus on defect detectability, whereas the presented method uses high-frequency ultrasound testing (UT) to detect and quantify the defect geometry and defect type. Testing is performed using two approaches, a laboratory scale immersion tank and a novel portable UT system, both of which utilize only single-side access to the part. Coupons are presented with defects spanning from 5 to 40 mm in diameter, whereas defects in the range of 15–25 mm and smaller are considered below the detectability limits of existing inspection methods. Defect types studied include missing adhesive, unintentional foreign objects that occur during the manufacturing process, damaged core, and removed core sections. An algorithm is presented to quantify the defect perimeter. The provided results demonstrate successful defect detection, with an average defect diameter error of 0.6 mm across all coupons studied in the immersion system and 1.1 mm for the portable system. The best accuracy comes from the missing adhesive coupons, with an average error of 0.3 mm. Conversely, the worst results come from the missing or damaged honeycomb coupons, with an error average of 0.7 mm, well below the standard detectability levels of 15–25 mm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The elevator industry is constantly expanding creating an increased demand for the integration of high technological tools to increase elevator efficiency and safety. Towards this direction, Additive Manufacturing (AM), and especially metal AM, is one of the technologies that could offer numerous competitive advantages in the production of industrial parts, such as integration of complex geometry, high manufacturability of high-strength metal alloys, etc. In this context, the present study has 3D designed, 3D printing manufactured, and evaluated novel bioinspired structures for elevator safety gear friction pads with the aim of enhancing their dynamic friction performance and eliminating the undesired behavior properties observed in conventional pads. Four different friction pads with embedded bioinspired surface lattice structures were formed on the template of the friction surface of the conventional pads and 3D printed by the Selective Laser Melting (SLM) process utilizing tool steel H13 powder as feedstock material. Each safety gear friction pad underwent tribological tests to evaluate its dynamic coefficient of friction (CoF). The results indicated that pads with a high contact surface area, such as those with car-tire-like and extended honeycomb structures, exhibit high CoF of 0.549 and 0.459, respectively. Based on the acquired CoFs, Finite Element Models (FEM) were developed to access the performance of braking pads under realistic operation conditions, highlighting the lower stress concentration for the aforementioned designs. This research delves into the design, modeling, and finite element impact analysis of the segmented sandwich composite armor system subjected to impact loading, considering different parameters such as materials to be used, armor height, and armor design configuration. Initial studies were performed to select the ideal model that will provide the best impact resistance at the least weight and with minimal fabrication requirements. Material type, thickness, and overall model configuration were defined during the initial model development period. Once the final design was defined, finite element analysis was performed using 2017 ABAQUS software to observe the performance of the model and to validate the efficiency of the chosen armor. Based on the results from the material selection and thickness validation, the optimal design with the best impact resistance was noted as 1.2 mm thick rectangular segmented silicon carbide tiles, serving as the top layer that covers the three-level gradient core composed of a titanium metal honeycomb frame filled with silicon carbide inserts, and finally a 2 mm thick glass epoxy composite layer made from four laminas in a 0/45/90/-45-degree configuration serving as the last layer of the armor. The application of bionic structures for the design of energy-absorbing structures has been proposed recently. The rapid advancement of additive manufacturing technology provides technical support for the fabrication of non-traditional structures and further improves the energy-absorbing properties of bionic structures. This work proposes a novel bionic hybrid structure that consists of honeycomb-inspired thin-walled tubes filled with weevil-inspired diamond TPMS (triple periodic minimal surface) structures. The energy-absorbing properties and the deformation behaviors of these topologies under axial crushing loads were investigated using combined numerical simulations and experimental tests. First, the effect of filling quantity and filling distribution on energy absorption of the hybrid structures was investigated. Results show that honeycomb tubes and diamond TPMS structures produce a synergistic effect during compression, and the hybrid structures exhibit excellent stability and energy absorption capacity. The bionic hybrid structure improves specific energy absorption (SEA) by 299% compared to honeycomb tubes. Peak crush force (PCF) and SEA are more influenced by filling quantity than by filling distribution. The effects of diamond TPMS structure volume fraction and honeycomb tube wall thickness on the energetic absorptive capacity of the hybrid structure were furthermore investigated numerically. Finally, a multi-objective optimization method was used to optimize the design of the bionic hybrid structure and balance the relationship between crashworthiness and cost to obtain a bionic hybrid energy-absorbing structure with superior performance. This study provides valuable guidelines for designing and fabricating lightweight and efficient energy-absorbing structures with significant potential for engineering applications. This study explores the development of a terramechanics-based model for non-pneumatic tire–terrain interaction, focusing on different spoke designs. The research investigates how four spoke shapes (honeycomb, modified honeycomb, re-entrant honeycomb, and straight spokes) affect non-pneumatic tire performance in off-road conditions. Using the finite element method (FEM) to model non-pneumatic tires, and smoothed-particle hydrodynamics (SPH) to model dry, loose soil, simulations were conducted to replicate real-world loading conditions. This study utilizes virtual environment solution finite element analysis software to examine the interaction between a non-pneumatic tire and dry, loose soil, with a focus on calculating longitudinal and vertical forces. These forces play a pivotal role in determining the motion resistance coefficient. The results show distinct variations in the motion-resistance coefficients among the spoke designs on dry, loose soil. This analysis helps to identify the spoke configurations that optimize energy efficiency and fuel consumption. By comparing and evaluating the four spoke designs, this study shows the effect of spoke design on tire motion resistance. In recent years, communication systems, including RFID, have been used in intelligent beehives for beekeeping. RFID systems in the UHF frequency band offer reading distances of tens of centimetres, allowing the localisation and identification of the queen bee inside the hive. With this purpose, this work proposes an analysis of an environment of propagation that consists of a honeycomb frame, where the reader is placed within the frame, and the tag is placed in different positions over it. A honeycomb frame consists of a wooden box containing a honey wax panel, supported by metallic wires. The environment is modelled theoretically using its S-parameters and simulated in CST Studio. An analysis of these results and empirical measurements is performed. The results show that a periodicity in the received power of the tag is found with respect to the distance to the reader when the tag is located in a direction parallel to the wire, where local maximum and minimum values are found. Additionally, when the tag is placed over a wire of the frame, a higher received power is obtained compared to the case where the tag is placed between two wires.
