It is important to study the steel corrosion inhibition behavior in complex chloride salt environments. This paper uses the fact that calcined layered double hydroxides (CLDHs) have a certain memory effect, which means that it can reabsorb water and anions and partially restore the lamellar structure under certain conditions. This work investigated the influence of cation types on the steel corrosion inhibition behavior of CLDH in saturated calcium hydroxide solution using equilibrium isotherms of Cl− uptake, the electrochemical method, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The results show that the corrosion inhibition of the CLDH is affected by the cation types in the following order: Ca2+>Mg2+>K+≈Na+·Na+ and K+ increase the pH of the solution and decrease the corrosion inhibition of CLDH. The addition of Mg2+ can promote the reconstruction of Mg-Al-Zn-Cl hydrotalcite. The addition of Ca2+ can promote the formation of new Ca-Al layered double hydroxide (Ca-Al-LDH) and improve the corrosion inhibition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Antiphase bursting related to the rhythmic motor behavior exhibits complex dynamics modulated by the inhibitory synaptic current (Isyn), especially in the presence of the hyperpolarization-activated cation current (Ih). In the present paper, the dynamics of antiphase bursting modulated by the Ih and Isyn is studied in three aspects with a theoretical model. Firstly, the Isyn and the slow Ih with strong strength are the identified to be the necessary conditions for the antiphase bursting. The dependence of the antiphase bursting on the two currents is different for low (escape mode) and high (release mode) threshold voltages (Vth) of the inhibitory synapse. Secondly, more detailed co-regulations of the two currents to induce opposite changes of the bursting period are obtained. For the escape mode, increase of the Ih induces elevated membrane potential of the silence inhibited by a strong Isyn and shortened silence duration to go beyond Vth, resulting in reduced bursting period. For the release mode, increase of the Ih induces elevated tough value of the former part of the burst modulated by a nearly zero Isyn and lengthen burst duration to fall below Vth, resulting in prolonged bursting period. Finally, the fast-slow dynamics of the antiphase bursting are acquired. Using one-and two-parameter bifurcations of the fast subsystem of a single neuron, the burst of the antiphase bursting is related to the stable limit cycle, and the silence modulated by a strong Isyn to the stable equilibrium to a certain extent. The Ih mainly modulates the dynamics within the burst and quiescent state. Furthermore, with the fast subsystem of the coupled neurons, the silence is associated with the unstable equilibrium point. The results present theoretical explanations to the changes in the bursting period and fast-slow dynamics of the antiphase bursting modulated by the Isyn and Ih, which is helpful for understanding the antiphase bursting and modulating rhythmic motor patterns. In the past 20 years, perovskite-related research has attracted wide attention. The related research into two-dimensional/quasi-two-dimensional perovskite has propelled the research of perovskite materials to a new height. To improve the properties of quasi-2D perovskite, improve the stability of materials, and achieve specific functions, using different types, volumes, and lengths of organic spacers is an essential method. In this paper, quasi-2D perovskites with EDA (ethylene diammonium), PDA (1,3-propanediammonium), and BDA (1,4-butanediammonium) (m = 2–4) as organic spacers were prepared, and the effects of different organic spacers on the 2D perovskite were investigated. The results show that the length of the organic spacer significantly impacts the perovskite's properties. A shorter organic spacer can effectively reduce the quantum confinement and dielectric confinement in perovskite. It should be noted that if the organic spacer is too short, the stability of the quasi-2D perovskite will be greatly reduced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A superatom is a cluster of atoms that acts like a single atom. Two main groups of superatoms are superalkalis and superhalogens, which mimic the chemistry of alkali and halogen atoms, respectively. The ionization energies of superalkalis are smaller than those of alkalis (<3.89 eV for cesium atom), and the electron affinities of superhalogens are larger than that of halogens (>3.61 eV for chlorine atom). Exploring new superalkali/superhalogen aims to provide reliable data and predictions of the use of such compounds as redox agents in the reduction/oxidation of counterpart systems, as well as the role they can play more generally in materials science. The low ionization energies of superalkalis make them candidates for catalysts for CO2 conversion into renewable fuels and value-added chemicals. The large electron affinity of superhalogens makes them strong oxidizing agents for bonding and removing toxic molecules from the environment. By using the superatoms as building blocks of cluster-assembled materials, we can achieve the functional features of atom-based materials (like conductivity or catalytic potential) while having more flexibility to achieve higher performance. This feature paper covers the issues of designing such compounds and demonstrates how modifications of the superatoms (superhalogens and superalkalis) allow for the tuning of the electronic structure and might be used to create unique functional materials. The designed superatoms can form stable perovskites for solar cells, electrolytes for Li-ion batteries of electric vehicles, superatomic solids, and semiconducting materials. In fair weather, the vertical atmospheric electric field is oriented downward (positive in the earth surface ordinate system) in the global atmospheric circuit. Some researchers have revealed the unique phenomenon whereby once an upward vertical atmospheric electric field is observed in fair weather, an earthquake (EQ) follows within 2–48 h regardless of the EQ magnitude. However, the mechanism has not been explained with a suitable physical model. In this paper, a physical model is presented considering four types of forces acting on charged particles in the air. It is demonstrated that the heavier positive ions and lighter negative ions are rapidly separated. Finally, a reversed fair weather electrostatic field is formed by the above charge separation process. Static time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) was performed for acquiring the high-resolution surface spectra of four types of synthesized imidazolium ionene membranes. These novel membranes have aromatic ether–ketone–ether linkages inspired by poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK). The PEEK-ionenes synthesized for this study have imidazolium cations placed in the polymeric backbone with bistriflimide [Tf2N]− counterions. The attention given to synthetically modified PEEK derivatives, such as PEEK-ionenes, is considerable due to their ability to selectively capture CO2 molecules and other light gases. Therefore, it is important to characterize the surface of these synthesized novel PEEK-ionenes. In this work, characteristic and unique peaks were identified in the positive spectra of each sample. The differences in mass spectra among the samples provide insights for optimizing or fine-tuning the PEEK-ionenes synthesis to achieve a high-performance CO2 separation membrane with enhanced permeability, selectivity, and mechanical stability. The SIMS spectra and identified characteristic peaks of these synthesized ionenes will serve as a reference in the positive mode, complementing the corresponding spectra reported in the negative ion mode (Paper II). The Cairns-distributed electrons and positive ions in a plasma made up of a negative dust fluid are taken into account to examine the presence of arbitrary amplitude dust-acoustic solitons. It has previously been noted that nonthermal ions and thermal electrons generate both compressive and rarefactive solitons. In this paper, we noticed that nonthermal electrons together with nonthermal ions are responsible for producing the rarefactive solitons. It is found that the Sagdeev potential strongly depends on plasma parameters, such as nonthermal index α and Mach number, which, in turn, influence the Sagdeev potential and solitons significantly. We also found that the critical match number and height of soliton increase with the nonthermal parameter α. We further note that the Sagdeev potential as a function of potential φ becomes more negative and the amplitude of the soliton also enhances as the value of Mach number rises. It is concluded that the model presented here based on nonthermal ions and electrons in a negative dust fluid provides a worthy interpretation for electrostatic solitons observed in space plasmas. Bentonite, used as a barrier material in landfill systems and the geological disposal of radioactive waste, undergoes various processes such as the cation exchange with landfill leachate and repository groundwater, desiccation shrinkage due to heat released from solid waste or nuclide decay. In the context of these engineering applications, it is crucial to consider the effect of interlayer cation composition on the desiccation-shrinkage behavior of bentonite for assessing the long-term performance of barrier systems. This study investigates this impact by conducting desiccation tests on four different cation-type bentonite samples (i.e., K-, Na-, Ca-, and Mg-bentonite) and elucidating the underlying mechanisms through mercury intrusion porosimetry test, X-ray diffraction analysis, and suction measurements. The results indicate that K-bentonite exhibits the highest water evaporation rate and the lowest shrinkage potential, with no shrinkage cracks detected, and that Na-bentonite evaporates water at a relatively fast rate but presents the most pronounced volumetric shrinkage. In contrast, Ca- and Mg-bentonite have the highest water-retention capacity, and their shrinkage potentials are less than Na-bentonite. An improved shrinkage model is proposed, which is shown to describe the measured shrinkage curves for four types of homoionic bentonite samples. Additionally, the mechanism behind the effect of different interlayer cations was interpreted in terms of the interlayer–cation–water interaction, pore structure evolution, and soil suction variation. Several tetrahydroxidohexaoxidopentaborate(1-) salts of N-substituted diimidazolium cations or N-substituted dipyrrolidinium cations linked through N-C6-N chains have been synthesized and characterized spectroscopically (NMR, IR) and by single-crystal XRD studies: [R(NC3H3N)(CH2)6(NC3H3N)R][B5O6(OH)4]2·xH2O (R = Me, x = 0 (1); R = Et, x = 3 (2); [Me(NC3H3N)(CH2(C6H4)CH2)(NC3H3N)Me][B5O6(OH)4]2 (3), [(C4H8N)(R)(CH2)6(R)(NC4H8)][B5O6(OH)4]2·xB(OH)3 (R = Me, x = 0 (4, two polymorphs); R = Et, x = 0 (5); R = Bu, x = 4 (6); R = allyl, x = 0 (7)). Representative samples (1 and 7) were also characterized by thermal (TGA/DSC) studies; compounds are thermally decomposed to B2O3 in air. Numerous anion-anion H-bonding interactions are present in the solid-state structures of 1–5 and 7 as giant anionic networks. Unusually, in 6 there are no R22(8) anion-anion interactions as the co-crystallized B(OH)3 bridges between all pentaborate anions. Despite extensive research on particulate matter (PM) pollution in India's Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP), source apportionment remains challenging. This study investigates the effect of particulate matter (PM10)-associated water soluble inorganic ions (WSIIs) on ambient air concentration across the middle IGP from January to December 2018. Moreover, the seasonal fluctuation and chemical characterization of PM10 were assessed for the year 2018. The results revealed a high concentration of PM10 (156 µg/m3), exceeding the WHO and National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) limits. The highest PM10 levels were observed during autumn, winter, summer, and the rainy season. The study identified SO42− and NH4+ as the most common WSIIs, constituting 46% and 23% of the total WSIIs. Source apportionment analysis indicated that street dust, biomass burning, and vehicle and industrial emissions together with secondary formation significantly contributed to IGP's PM pollution. Additionally, the investigation of air mass back trajectory suggests that air quality in IGP is largely influenced by eastern and western Maritime air masses originated from the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal, Gujarat, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Micro-corona devices could be extensively utilized in gas sensing, switchgear, biomedicine, and other fields. As the influence mechanism of the cathode curvature radius on micro-corona discharge dynamical processes is very important for performance optimization and the promotion of these devices, a micro-scale corona discharge gas model in a mixture of N2-O2 is proposed based on the fluid–chemical mixing method, which describes the dynamic process of the discharge at atmosphere and normal temperatures. To reveal the influence mechanism of the nanowire curvature radius on the micro-corona discharge, the effect of the cathode nanowire radius on the discharge current, electric field, ionization reaction rate, and charged particle characteristics at different gaps and voltages were determined. The findings indicate that the effect of curvature radius on discharge intensity varies under different gap and voltage conditions. Further analysis indicates that an increase in curvature radius reduces the electric field near the tip while increasing the ionization area and secondary emission area as well as the number of positive ions in the space, consequently affecting the coupling process between the collision ionization and the secondary emission. Especially under the conditions of either small gap or low voltage, a suitable increase in the curvature radius could promote the coupling process and then increase the discharge current. Defect engineering is an effective strategy for modifying the energy storage materials to improve their electrochemical performance. However, the impact of oxygen defect and its content on the electrochemical performances in the burgeoning aqueous NH4 + storage field remains explored. Therefore, for the first time in this work, an oxygen-defective ammonium vanadate [(NH4)2V10O25.8H2O, denoted as Od-NHVO] with a novel 3D porous flower-like architecture was achieved via the reduction of thiourea in a mild reaction condition, which is a facile method that can realize the intention to regulate the oxygen defect content, with the capability of mass-production. The as-prepared OdM-NHVO with moderate oxygen defect content can deliver a stable specific capacitance output (505 F g-1, 252 mAh g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 with ~80% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles), which benefits from extra active sites, unimpeded NH4 +-migration path and relatively high structure integrity. In contrast, low oxygen defect content will lead to the torpid electrochemical reaction kinetics while too high content of it will reduce the chargestorage capability and induce structural disintegration. The superior NH4 +-storage behavior is achieved with the reversible intercalation/deintercalation process of NH4 + accompanied by forming/breaking of hydrogen bond. As expected, the assembled flexible OdM-NHVO//PTCDI quasi-solid-state hybrid supercapacitor (FQSS HSC) also exhibits high areal capacitance, energy density and reliable flexibility. The dissemination of positron-acoustic (PA) nonlinear structures, including the solitary waves (SWs) and cnoidal waves (CWs), is analyzed in an unmagnetized electron–positron–ion (e–p–i) plasma having inertial cold positrons and inertialess Cairns distributed electrons and Maxwellian positrons as well as immobile positive ions. The reductive perturbation method (RPM) is introduced to reduce the fluid equations to this model to the Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) type equation for studying small amplitude PA waves (PAWs). Moreover, the Kawahara (sometimes called the fifth-order KdV) equation is also obtained to investigate the characteristics of large amplitude PAWs. The effects of related parameters, such as nonthermal parameters, hot positron concentration, electron concentration, and temperature ratios, are numerically examined on the features of SWs and CWs. Futibatinib is an excellent fibroblast growth factor receptor 1–4 (FGFR 1–4) inhibitor that exhibits selective anti-tumor activeness against FGFR-deregulated tumors. A new high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) technique for the quantitative analysis of futibatinib in beagle dog plasma was developed, and the effect of Yinchenhao decoction (YCHD) on the pharmacokinetics of futibatinib was evaluated. After processing plasma samples with ethyl acetate extraction in the alkaline condition of sodium carbonate, a C18 column (4.6 mm × 150, 5 μm) was used to accomplish the separation of futibatinib and ripretinib (internal standard, ISTD), with the mobile phase consisting of methanol and 0.1% formic acid in water (60:40). The scanning method adopted a multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode with positive ion detection through the triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. The ion transitions for futibatinib and IS were m/z 419.20 → 296.15 and m/z 510.36 → 417.00, respectively. Futibatinib displayed excellent linearity in the range of 1–200 ng/mL. Neither inter-day nor intra-day precision exceeded 6.3%. The %RE values for accuracy ranged from −3.1% to 0.9%. The recovery, stability, and matrix effect of futibatinib also complied with the guidelines for the validation of quantitative analysis methods for biological samples in the 2020 edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. In combination with YCHD, the Cmax of futibatinib increased by 40.84% compared to futibatinib dosage alone., and the AUC(0–t) and AUC(0–∞) of futibatinib increased by 78.06% and 82.71%, respectively. The Vd and CL of futibatinib were reduced by 20.05% and 40.85%, respectively. T1/2 was extended from 3.88 h to 5.26 h. The results indicated that YCHD could affect the pharmacokinetics of futibatinib and increase the plasma exposure of futibatinib. Supercapacitors have many applications in new energy and other high-tech fields. The desolvation effect on ions affects the capacity size of supercapacitors, and there are few relevant studies published in this field at present. In this experiment, bilayer graphene (BG) with a layer spacing of 4–10 Å was used as a model of flat pores and was calculated with first-principles calculations, which can effectively simulate the adsorption behaviour of porous carbon. The reaction energies of ions, propylene carbonate, and ionic complexes in bilayer graphene with different layer spacings were calculated, and the desolvation behaviour of lithium salt cations (Li+), tetraethyl quaternary ammonium salt cations (TEA+), triethyl methyl quaternary ammonium salt cations (TEMA+), and bipyrrolidinium quaternary ammonium salt cations (SBP+) was investigated. The calculation was based on density functional compact bound (DFTB+) software. The calculated results show that in the stacked system, the complete desolvation size of the TEA+ reaches 5.6 Å, the complete desolvation size of the TEMA+ reaches 4.9 Å, the complete desolvation size of the SBP+ reaches 4.8 Å, and the complete desolvation size of the Li+ reaches 5.4 Å, with the organic electrolyte cations showing a positive trend in the complete desolvation size as the ion radius increases. An in-depth analysis of the data shows that Li+, TEA+, TEMA+, and SBP+ ion radii play a dominant role in the size of desolvation. The results of this paper provide an effective aid for the selection of organic electrolytes to increase the capacity of supercapacitors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the external drainage water of Xinjiang Karamay Petrochemical Company, the calcium and magnesium ion contents are as high as 630 mg/L and 1170 mg/L, respectively. These ions are subsequently scaled at large quantities in water treatment equipment, which greatly reduces the efficiency of the process. This study used a coupled chemical precipitation (CP) and electrocoagulation (EC) method to deal with external drainage water. The results show that the removal rates of calcium and magnesium were 94.71% and 96.33%, respectively, when the pH was adjusted with sodium silicate and EC was introduced after saturating the water samples with CO2. In this study, a quadratic polynomial equation was developed for predicting the removal of calcium and magnesium ions using this coupled technique under three factors of current density (CD) (15, 20 and 25 mA/cm2), reaction time (RT) (30, 40 and 50 min) and pH (10.0, 10.5 and 11.0). It was found that these three variables have a significant effect on the removal of both the abovementioned ions. The response surface method based on a Box–Behnken design showed that the average removal rates of calcium and magnesium ions could be 96.57% and 98.66% at a CD of 22 mA/cm2, RT of 46 min and pH of 11. This study confirmed the presence of calcium carbonate in the solid product through XRD and SEM analysis. The results indicate that this study is promising, and the developed technique can also be used to remove the high concentrations of calcium and magnesium ions from different wastewaters. Flexible control of the composition and morphology of nanocrystals (NCs) over a wide range is an essential technology for the creation of functional nanomaterials. Cation exchange (CE) is a facile method by which to finely tune the compositions of ionic NCs, providing an opportunity to obtain complex nanostructures that are difficult to form using conventional chemical synthesis procedures. However, due to their robust anion frameworks, CE cannot typically be used to modify the original morphology of the host NCs. In this study, we report an anisotropic morphological transformation of Cu1.8S NCs during CE. Upon partial CE of Cu1.8S nanoplates (NPLs) with Mn2+, the hexagonal NPLs are transformed into crescent-shaped Cu1.8S–MnS NPLs. Upon further CE, these crescent-shaped NPLs evolve back into completely hexagonal MnS NPLs. Comprehensive characterization of the intermediates reveals that this waxing-and-waning shape-evolution process is due to dissolution, redeposition, and intraparticle migration of Cu+ and S2−. Furthermore, in addition to Mn2+, this CE-induced transformation process occurs with Zn2+, Cd2+ and Fe3+. This finding presents a strategy by which to create heterostructured NCs with various morphologies and compositions under mild conditions. The robust anion framework of ionic nanocrystals impedes shape change by cation exchange. The nanostructuring of electrodes is a common way of increasing electrocatalytic activity. Yet, the fact that the presence of insulating material in nanostructured composites can have a positive effect on efficiency was an unexpected recent finding. The rate enhancement has been linked to different electric fields at the insulator and metal interfaces, facilitating enhanced transport of reaction products into the bulk electrolyte. In this article, we further uncover the origin of the rate enhancement with parameter studies and simulations. We experimentally investigate various parameter dependencies of the alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) on well‐defined nanometer‐sized Au arrays embedded in a silicon nitride insulating layer. We find a significant enhancement of the HER for all experimental conditions and opposite activity trends with pH, electrolyte concentration and the cationic species compared to a continuous Au electrode. Using a mean field model, we quantify the electrostatic interfacial pressure above the Au and the insulator patches. Combining the double layer simulations with rate equations, we demonstrate that all parameter variations can be consistently explained by the fact that the double layer structure above the insulator patches is much less rigid than above the metal islands and is independent of the applied potential. Esterquats constitute a unique group of quaternary ammonium salts (QASs) that contain an ester bond in the structure of the cation. Despite the numerous advantages of this class of compounds, only two mini-reviews discuss the subject of esterquats: the first one (2007) briefly summarizes their types, synthesis, and structural elements required for a beneficial environmental profile and only briefly covers their applications whereas the second one only reviews the stability of selected betaine-type esterquats in aqueous solutions. The rationale for writing this review is to critically reevaluate the relevant literature and provide others with a "state-of-the-art" snapshot of choline-type esterquats and betaine-type esterquats. Hence, the first part of this survey thoroughly summarizes the most important scientific reports demonstrating effective synthesis routes leading to the formation of both types of esterquats. In the second section, the susceptibility of esterquats to hydrolysis is explained, and the influence of various factors, such as the pH, the degree of salinity, or the temperature of the solution, was subjected to thorough analysis that includes quantitative components. The next two sections refer to various aspects associated with the ecotoxicity of esterquats. Consequently, their biodegradation and toxic effects on microorganisms are extensively analyzed as crucial factors that can affect their commercialization. Then, the reported applications of esterquats are briefly discussed, including the functionalization of macromolecules, such as cotton fabric as well as their successful utilization on a commercial scale. The last section demonstrates the most essential conclusions and reported drawbacks that allow us to elucidate future recommendations regarding the development of these promising chemicals. A theoretical investigation of the phase-mixing phenomenon of Langmuir oscillations (LOs) in a multi-component dusty plasma is presented. The plasma under study is a four-component plasma consisting of electrons, positrons, singly ionised positive ions and positive (or negative) polarity dust grains. The massive dust grains are assumed to form a fixed charge neutralising background, while the electrons, positrons and ions are considered to take part in the wave dynamics. A simple perturbative analysis of the governing fluid-Maxwell's equations leads us to an approximate relation for phase-mixing time of LOs, improving some earlier existing results. It is revealed that even though the dust grains remain motionless in the background, they still have significant impact on the phase-mixing process of LOs in such plasmas. It is found that the nature of the charge on the dust grains and the equilibrium dust density profoundly affect the phase-mixing time. Cisplatin (CDDP) is a highly potent chemotherapy drug. But its nephrotoxicity poses a significant limitation to its use. The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) has been proposed to play a role in drug-induced nephrotoxicity. This systematic review (SR) sought to identify the link between CDDP-induced nephrotoxicity and the RAS pathway. In this SR, relevant keywords were employed to explore databases such as PubMed (MEDLINE), Scopus (Elsevier), and Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Web of Science up to October 2023. Nine studies were selected based on predefined inclusion/exclusion criteria. The findings support the involvement of the RAS in the CDDP-induced nephrotoxicity model, along with the activation of inflammatory mediators, lipid peroxidation, and changes in markers of kidney tissue damage. Furthermore, physiology and pathology of RAS-related interventions in CDDP-induced nephrotoxicity models have involved the factors such as human organic cation transporter 2 (hOCT2), organic anion transporting polypeptides 1B1 (OATP1B1) and 1B3, kallikrein-kinin system, and bradykinin receptors. CDDP-induced nephrotoxicity has been found to be substantially influenced by both classic and nonclassic RAS axes. Angiotensin II exacerbates renal damage induced by CDDP. Conversely, inhibiting the pressor arm of RAS in males mitigates this damage. However, activation of the renal vasodepressor arm of RAS exacerbates CDDP-induced nephrotoxicity in females. These findings underscore gender differences in renal function and response to RAS-related interventions in the presence of CDDP. This SR provides insights into both beneficial and adverse interventions associated with RAS in the CDDP-induced nephrotoxicity, offering valuable considerations for researchers and clinicians. An irrigation quality assessment for rural Hyderabad was made by determining the pH, EC, TDS and TH beside major cations and anions. This study employed various parameters to determine the suitability of groundwater for irrigation and its hydrochemistry. Permissible limits of major cations and anions revealed that approximately 26% of samples exceeded acceptable levels for Electrical Conductivity (EC), 87% for Ca2+, 89% for Mg2+, and 60% for Na+, while none exceeded the limits for K+. Conversely, 47% of samples for HCO3−, 91% for Cl−, and 100% for SO42−, NO3−, and CO32− proved suitability for irrigation. Notably, irrigation indices highlighted favorable results, with 100% conformity for SAR, SSP, RSP, and PI values, and substantial percentages of 78% and 85% for MH and KR values, respectively, affirming their suitability for irrigation practices. Employing the USSL diagram, 22%, 65%, and 11% of samples fall into the C2S1, C3S1, and C4S1 categories. According to the Wilcox diagram, 25%, 43%, 30%, and 2% are classified under C1, C2, C3, and C4 categories, respectively. The Gibbs ratio shows a concentration within the evaporation dominance, and CAI values showed positive ion exchange. Overall, Hyderabad's rural areas are generally suitable for irrigation, apart from certain areas where water quality may not be acceptable for plants lacking high salt tolerance. To clarify the migration and accumulation of nitrogen (N), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), and potassium (K) in soil profiles of plastic-greenhouse vegetable fields with cultivation years, soil samples from the 0–7 m soil profiles were collected from 10 pepper greenhouses with 10 and 20 years planting history, and parallel soil samples were taken from adjacent wheat-maize fields as controls. The results showed that: (1) Compared with wheat-maize fields, the total N amount in the 0–7 m soil layers from the greenhouses increased by 6.19 ± 1.16 and 9.11 ± 3.43 t ha−1 at 10 and 20 years, respectively, accounting for about 30.4% and 17.5% of the N input. (2) The N amount that entered the environment outside the 0–7 m soil layers were 6.95 t ± 2.76 and 29.10 ± 10.14 t ha−1 after 10 and 20 years of continuous planting, accounting for approximately 34.2% and 55.9% of the N input, respectively. (3) The concentration of water-soluble Ca and Mg in the 0–7 m soil layers increased significantly with cultivation years, and correlated positively with mineral N concentration. (4) Moreover, K mainly accumulates in the form of non-exchangeable K in the surface layers (0–50 cm). Our results demonstrated that huge amounts of N migrate to the deep soil with the extension of cultivation years in plastic-greenhouse pepper production systems, accompanied by significant leaching of Ca and Mg, while K mainly accumulates in the surface layers. A new sol-gel method that employs cation exchange from an aqueous metal ion solution with H+ ions of granulated alginic acid was developed for synthesizing high-purity Y2O3 nanoparticles. In this study, the cation exchange kinetics of H+~Y3+ in aqueous solution were analyzed using on-line pH technology and off-line inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) analysis. Pseudo 2nd-order models were utilized to evaluate the parameters of the kinetics, suggesting that the concentration of H+~Y3+ involved in the cation exchange reaction was 1:1.733. Further, a comprehensive understanding of the Y-ALG calcination process was developed using thermo-gravimetric analysis, along with results obtained from differential scanning calorimetry (TGA/DSC). A detailed analysis of the XRD Rietveld refinement plots revealed that the crystallite sizes of Y2O3 nanoparticles were about 4 nm (500 °C) and 15 nm (800 °C), respectively. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was employed to investigate the electrochemical oxidation of catechol. The oxidation peak currents of catechol at Y2O3 (500 °C)/GCE and Y2O3 (800 °C)/GCE showed two stages linear function of concentration (2.0~20.0 × 10−6 mol/L, 20.0~60.0 × 10−6 mol/L). The results indicated that the detection limits were equal to 2.4 × 10−7 mol/L (Y2O3 (500 °C)/GCE) and 7.8 × 10−7 mol/L (Y2O3 (800 °C)/GCE). In the filamentous ascomycete Aspergillus nidulans, at least three high hierarchy transcription factors are required for growth at extracellular alkaline pH: SltA, PacC and CrzA. Transcriptomic profiles depending on alkaline pH and SltA function showed that pacC expression might be under SltA regulation. Additional transcriptional studies of PacC and the only pH-regulated pal gene, palF, confirmed both the strong dependence on ambient pH and the function of SltA. The regulation of pacC expression is dependent on the activity of the zinc binuclear (C6) cluster transcription factor PacX. However, we found that the ablation of sltA in the pacX− mutant background specifically prevents the increase in pacC expression levels without affecting PacC protein levels, showing a novel specific function of the PacX factor. The loss of sltA function causes the anomalous proteolytic processing of PacC and a reduction in the post-translational modifications of PalF. At alkaline pH, in a null sltA background, PacC72kDa accumulates, detection of the intermediate PacC53kDa form is extremely low and the final processed form of 27 kDa shows altered electrophoretic mobility. Constitutive ubiquitination of PalF or the presence of alkalinity-mimicking mutations in pacC, such as pacCc14 and pacCc700, resembling PacC53kDa and PacC27kDa, respectively, allowed the normal processing of PacC but did not rescue the alkaline pH-sensitive phenotype caused by the null sltA allele. Overall, data show that Slt and PacC/Pal pathways are interconnected, but the transcription factor SltA is on a higher hierarchical level than PacC on regulating the tolerance to the ambient alkalinity in A. nidulans. The plasma-wall transition in a plasma containing singly charged positive ions and two groups of electrons is studied with a one-dimensional steady-state multifluid model, which is presented in some detail. When the temperature and the initial density ratio between the two groups of electrons are varied, a transition between the two types of solutions to the model equations is observed. When the density and temperature of the hot electrons are above certain critical values, a high solution is observed. If the ion mass is decreased, these critical values increase. However, this effect only occurs with artificially small ion masses, which are significantly lower than the proton mass. In the high solution, the potential drop is determined by the hot electrons and is greater in absolute terms than in the low solution, where it is determined by the base electron population. The transition between the low and high solutions is very sharp if a neutrality condition is imposed. However, if the neutrality condition is replaced by the Poisson equation, the transition becomes blurred and the solutions exhibit oscillations. The temperature profiles of the ions are analyzed, and it is confirmed that the ion sound and the ion fluid velocity become equal at the breaking point of the plasma neutrality. It is shown how the ion source term, the initial ion velocity, and the initial electric field are found to be self-consistent. The density profiles of the negatively biased particles resulting from the fluid equations deviate very little those of from the Boltzmann-distributed particles, even if the corresponding source terms are quite large. Montmorillonite (Mt) is a ubiquitous swelling clay mineral and major component of soft rocks, sediments, and soils with an inherent capability to sorb metal cations. This unique feature renders Mt important for the enrichment and mobilization of environmentally important metal cations, retardation of heavy metals and radionuclide ions, the evolution of clay mineral itself, soils and sediments, and other geological processes. Understanding the interfacial interactions of Mt with metal cations at the molecular level is of fundamental importance in all these processes, but still remains elusive, due to the chemical and structural complexity of Mt surfaces and the diverse chemistries of metal cations. In this Review, we aim to provide the reader with a comprehensive overview of the adsorption modes of metal cations on basal and edge surfaces of Mt, local chemical environments of the cation binding sites, the driving forces for metal sorption, and factors influencing the dynamics of cation uptake onto Mt surfaces. Various surface complexation models [i.e., nonelectrostatic model (NEM), constant capacitance model (CCM), diffuse layer model (DLM), and triple-layer model (TLM)], advanced spectroscopic techniques (i.e., NEM, CCM, DLM, and TLM), and atomistic simulation methods (i.e., MD, DFT, and FPMD) have been used in conjunction with macroscopic adsorption experiments to gain detailed insights into the interfacial interactions of metal cations on Mt. Mt adsorbs metal cations via three independent pathways: (1) cation exchange; (2) surface complexation; and (3) nucleation and surface precipitation. The principal driving force for cation exchange is electrostatic interaction, while chemical bonding governs the two other mechanisms that depend on the basal and edge surface properties of Mt. The siloxane cavities on the tetrahedral basal plane exhibit the strongest adsorption sites for cation exchange and are greatly affected by the the degree of Al3+/Si4+ tetrahedral substitutions. At the amphoteric edge surfaces bearing hydroxyl groups, metal cations could form mono/multidentate surface complexes on Mt [010] and [110] edges. Ionic strength, pH, the presence of competing cations, temperature, and layer charge have been shown to affect the adsorption mechanisms and quantity of adsorbed cations. The updated information on the interfacial interactions of metal cations with Mt basal and edge surfaces presented in this review provides an improved understanding of the enrichment of metals, formation of metal ores, and natural biogeochemical cycles, as well as may promote technological and engineering applications of this important clay mineral in environmental remediation, geological repository, petroleum exploration and extraction, and extraterrestrial research. Plasma jet normally operates in a regime of positive or negative streamers. Different propagating behaviors have been investigated for positive streamers. However, there are few studies on negative streamers. In this paper, a two-dimensional fluid model is used to simulate the behavior of a negative streamer encountered with a cloud of positive ions. Simulation results indicate that the negative streamer behaves like a free streamer when the ion cloud has a low charge density. After initiation near the needle tip, the streamer propagates along the axis, passes through the ion cloud, and finally reaches the anode vicinity along a straight line. When the streamer reaches the ion cloud, its head radius (R0) is investigated as a function of parameters, including the voltage amplitude and the gap width, as well as the charge density, axial position, and spatial size of the ion cloud. At a given moment, electric field strength and electron density near the streamer head increase with increasing charge density of the ion cloud. In the case of a high charge-density ion cloud, after a primary streamer propagates some distance along the axis, a positive secondary streamer, and a negative secondary streamer start to propagate from the cloud to the cathode and the anode, respectively. Supercapacitors have a wide range of applications in high-technology fields. The desolvation of organic electrolyte cations affects the capacity size and conductivity of supercapacitors. However, few relevant studies have been published in this field. In this experiment, the adsorption behavior of porous carbon was simulated with first-principles calculations using a graphene bilayer with a layer spacing of 4–10 Å as a hydroxyl-flat pore model. The reaction energies of quaternary ammonium cations, acetonitrile, and quaternary ammonium cationic complexes were calculated in a graphene bilayer with different interlayer spacings, and the desolvation behavior of TEA+ and SBP+ ions was described. The critical size for the complete desolvation of [TEA(AN)]+ was 4.7 Å, and the partial desolvation size ranged from 4.7 to 4.8 Å. The critical size for the complete desolvation of [SBP(AN)]+ was 5.2 Å, and the partial desolvation size ranged from 5.2 to 5.5 Å. As the ionic radius of the quaternary ammonium cation decreased, the desolvation size showed a positive trend. A density of states (DOS) analysis of the desolvated quaternary ammonium cations embedded in the hydroxyl-flat pore structure showed that the conductivity of the hydroxyl-flat pore was enhanced after gaining electrons. The tip size of metal protrusions is an important factor affecting corona discharge, since it influences the electric filed, the ionization range and strength around the protrusion defect. Most existing studies on the influence of protrusion tip size on corona discharge are implemented by experimental methods. However, these studies are difficult to obtain the microphysical process of charged particles, which is related to the generation of current pulses and electromagnetic (EM) waves. In this paper, a hydrodynamic simulation model is proposed to study the effect of protrusion tip size on the microphysical process and current pulses of negative corona discharge. A mapping relationship between microscopic behaviors of charged particles and current pulses is established by this simulation method. Based on the comparison of microphysical quantities, the effect of defect tip size on the detailed parameters of current pulses is clearly explained. It shows that with the increase of tip size under a constant voltage, all the five parameters of current pluses increase. The rising time is related to the effective ionization coefficient, while the falling time is dependent on the velocities of positive and negative ions. The Solar Wind Ion Focusing Thruster (SWIFT) is a highly-innovative propellantless propulsion concept, recently proposed by Gemmer and Mazzoleni. In its nominal configuration, a SWIFT consists of a conically-shaped mesh of positively-charged conducting tethers, with its vertex linked to the spacecraft and its axis oriented towards the Sun. The SWIFT collects and filters the solar wind plasma and suitably directs the positive ions, which are then accelerated by an ion thruster. Such a device is theoretically able to generate a deep-space propulsive acceleration that comes, in part, from the solar wind dynamic pressure impinging on the conical grid and, in part, from the positive ion beam. In particular, the orientation of the ion beam may be chosen in such a way as to set the resultant propulsive acceleration and steer the spacecraft. The aim of this paper is to analyze the performance of a SWIFT-propelled spacecraft in an orbit-to-orbit two-dimensional interplanetary transfer. To that end, some mission scenarios are studied, in an optimal framework, by minimizing the total flight time necessary for the spacecraft to complete the transfer as a function of the propulsion system performance parameters. Numerical simulations are used to compare the optimal flight times calculated in simplified Earth–Venus and Earth–Mars transfers with those obtained by considering other propellantless propulsion systems. Mixtures of powder and liquid are ubiquitous in nature as well as industries and exhibit complex flowing and deforming behaviors, including sol to gel transition under shear stress. In order to better understand the characteristic features of this type of mixture, we observed the behavior of a mixture of colloidal silica particles and water as a model system under vibration. The mixture showed different states, from powder-like to viscous fluid-like, with increasing content of water. At certain concentrations of silica particles (around 70 wt. %) and under relatively faster vibration (over 17 Hz), we observed that the colloidal suspension of silica particles and water climbed up the wall of a container against gravity. The main purpose of this paper is to report how we can observe the climbing suspension of colloidal silica. The rheological measurements of the climbing suspension demonstrated that the climbing suspension showed shear-thickening behavior, where force chain networks and normal stress differences are considered to develop. Therefore, we speculate that the transient formation and breaking of force networks and normal stress differences under vibration contribute to the occurrence of the climbing suspension. An hourly scale precursor of inland earthquakes (EQs) is revealed in this paper. Several EQ cases in China have been reported. As indicated by a table listing 23 inland EQs and their shock time, epicenter location, magnitude, near-epicenter weather conditions, precursor start time and precursor duration, when the weather conditions are fair near the epicenter, an anomalously negative atmospheric electrostatic signal is readily observable approximately 2–48 h before the EQ occurs. Moreover, a successful single-station alarm for nearby moderate-magnitude EQs is demonstrated, and a possible mechanism for the precursor signal is proposed. The change in the electrostatic field during an EQ process is explained as the release of radioactive gases from the subsurface into the atmosphere via large (regional-scale) preexisting microfractures in the rock at the source depth. These gases considerably ionize the atmosphere, and the separated positive and negative ions establish a special macroscopic electric field. Red‐emitting color‐convertors have attracted considerable attention for promising applications in solid‐state lighting (SSL) to improve color rendition. However, the current nitride and fluoride phosphor powders have encountered several challenges, such as high cost, narrow emission bands, and insufficient stability during operation, which limit the development of high‐power full‐spectrum SSL. In this study, thermally robust Gd3(Al,Ga)5O12:Mn (GAGG:Mn) solid‐solution ceramics (SSCs) with dual wavelength red‐emission bands were prepared via an oxygen solid‐state sintering reaction. The doped Mn ions occupied octahedral Al3+ and Ga3+ sites to generate Mn4+ luminescent centers with pronounced deep‐red emissions peaking at 698 nm (2E → 4A2), and Mn2+ luminescent centers with broad red emissions at 628 nm (4T1 → 6A1). Because the cationic radius matching effect induced the regulation of valence state of Mn, the photoluminescence of the GAGG:Mn SSCs can be tailored by the substitution of Al3+ with Ga3+. Moreover, the Mn3+ also existed in the GAGG lattice host, and their concentration decreased with increasing Ga3+ contents owing to the mismatch of ionic radius between Mn3+ and Ga3+ ions. With the optimization of Al/Ga ratio and concentration of Mn ions, a broad emission band ranging from 550 to 800 nm (bandwidth = 250 nm) was achieved from Gd3Al3Ga2O12:0.3%Mn SSCs upon 465‐nm excitation. Moreover, the GAGG:Mn SSC has over 17‐fold enhanced thermal conductivity compared with the corresponding phosphor powder. An elaborate account of groundwater quality estimation for irrigation in Katthiwada area Alirajpur district Madhya Pradesh is presented in this paper. The selected 20 groundwater samples from open-dug wells have been subjected to chemical analysis by standard techniques of graphic representation in tabular form. The analysis of dug wells samples for determination of Physicochemical parameters indicates that all groundwater samples are colourless, odourless, and tasteless with pH (7.0 -8.7), Electrical conductivity (238-1555), Total dissolved solids (450 -1180) mg/l. The chemical parameters involve the determination of the ionic concentration of cations - Calcium (0.89 to 3.04 mg/l), Magnesium (0.49 to 3.12 mg/l), potassium (0.01 to 0.13 mg/l) and sodium (0.95 to 10.35 mg/l) and anion - nitrate (0.56 to 1.45), Hco3 (1.19 to 3.85 mg/l), chloride (0.31 to 5.10) and sulphate (0.02 to 2.68 mg/l). The quality of groundwater for irrigational purposes depends on different chemical parameters such as sodium persent; Kelley's Ratio, Sodium Adsorption Ratio, Residual Sodium Carbonate, and Magnesium-Hazard. U. S. Salinity diagram shows that 19 samples belong to the C2 S1 type (medium salinity - low sodium water), 1 sample represents to C3 S1 type (high salinity - low sodium water) and 1 sample falls into C3 S2. Wilcox diagram shows that 16 samples of the groundwater fall under the excellent to good category, and 4 samples represent the good to permissible categories. A new approach for the chemical modification of the surface of paper based on the application of colloidal mixtures containing cationic starch and polyoxometalates on uncoated base paper is presented. Polyoxometalates with the Keggin-type structure and physical properties similar to those presented by coating pigments, namely H3PW12O40∙23H2O, H4SiW12O40∙24H2O, and K7PW11O39∙9H2O, have been used in order to improve the quality of inkjet printing. The analysis of the different samples by FTIRATR spectroscopy showed the presence of the polyoxometalates (and the cationic starch) on the top surface of the paper. In addition, the determination of surface energy parameters, namely the polar component (σsp) and the dispersive component (σsd) of the surface energy, by contact angle measurements revealed that, for the new samples, the polar component level was much higher than that of the uncoated base paper. The 1,4-benzodiazepine structural framework is a fascinating element commonly found in biologically active and pharmaceutically relevant compounds. A highly efficient method for synthesizing 1,4-benzodiazepin-3-ones is described, involving a [4+3]-cycloaddition reaction between 2-amino-β-nitrostyrenes and α-bromohydroxamate, with Cs2CO3 used as a base. This process yielded the desired 1,4-benzodiazepines in good yields. Furthermore, an organocatalytic asymmetric [4+3]-cycloaddition was successfully accomplished using a bifunctional squaramide-based catalyst. This approach enabled the enantioselective synthesis of chiral 1,4-benzodiazepines with commendable yields and moderate enantioselectivities, reaching up to 80% yield and 72% ee. (1) Background: Previous research has demonstrated that the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of soil and the balance of exchangeable cations Ca, Mg, and K are key factors affecting plant growth and development. We hypothesized that balancing exchangeable cations based on increased CEC would improve plant growth and development. (2) Methods: This study conducted a two-phase experiment to evaluate methods for increasing soil CEC and the effects of increasing CEC and balancing Ca, Mg, and K on plant growth. Therefore, we first conducted a soil culture experiment using organic fertilizer, montmorillonite, and humic acid to investigate fertilizers that can effectively increase CEC in the short term. Then, a tomato seedling pot experiment was conducted using the control (CK) and OMHA fertilizer-treated soils collected from soil culture experiments. The CK and OMHA treatment soils were constructed with balanced exchangeable cations and an unbalanced control, respectively. (3) Results: The soil culture experiments revealed that the combination of organic fertilizer, montmorillonite, and humic acid (OMHA treatment) had the most significant effect on increasing CEC. The CEC of the OMHA treatment increased by 41.07%, reaching 27.10 cmol·kg−1. The tomato pot experiments demonstrated that balancing the exchangeable cations in OMHA soil improved the Mg and K nutrition of tomato seedlings and significantly increased SPAD, leaf nitrogen content, and dry weight, while balancing the exchangeable cations in CK soil improved only the K nutrition of tomato seedlings. (4) Conclusions: Overall, balancing exchangeable cations based on increasing CEC can improve soil nutrient availability and alleviate the competition effects of Ca, Mg, and K cations. Early Mars was likely habitable, but could life actually have started there? While cellular life emerged from prebiotic chemistry through a pre-Darwinian selection process relevant to both Earth and Mars, each planet posed unique selection 'hurdles' to this process. We focus on drivers of selection in prebiotic chemistry generic to Earth-like worlds and specific to Mars, such as an iron-rich surface. Iron, calcium, and magnesium cations are abundant in hydrothermal settings on Earth and Mars, a promising environment for an origin of life. We investigated the impact of cations on the stability and disruption of different primitive cell membranes under different pH conditions. The relative destabilizing effect of cations on membranes observed in this study is Ca2+ > Fe2+ > Mg2+. Cation concentrations in Earth systems today are too low to disrupt primitive membranes, but on Mars concentrations could have been elevated enough to disrupt membranes during surface dehydration. Membranes and RNA interact during dehydration–rehydration cycles to mutually stabilize each other in cation-rich solutions, and optimal membrane composition can be 'selected' by environmental factors such as pH and cation concentrations. Mineral components in tap water generally contaminate sanitary ware. In this study, various cations (Mg, Ca, and Al) were added to an aqueous solution containing silica to prevent water stains on sanitary ware. The particle size in the aqueous solution was measured and observed to increase for all cations. To create artificial water stains, a solution containing the cations and silica was dropped onto glass and allowed to dry. When these water stains were removed by sliding, the removal rate was higher for the water stains that contained the cations. This trend was attributed to the formation of precipitates owing to the reaction of silica with the added cations in the aqueous solution. The formation of these precipitates possibly increased the particle size and brittleness of water stains owing to their sparse structure. These findings provide insights into silica‐scale removal, which can improve the cleanliness of sanitary ware and reduce the frequency of maintenance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bicarbonate ions (HCO3−) are abundant in karst water with poor lead (Pb) utilization and biodegradation. This study aimed to investigate the mechanism of HCO3− on the Pb removal efficiency and uptake ability of Pontederia crassipes (a widespread hydrophyte in the karst area) from karst water. The Pb concentration, Pontederia crassipes morphology, and functional group were detected. As the HCO3− molarity in karst water increased (3, 4, and 5 mmol/L), the removal of Pb increased (85.31%, 93.28%, and 95.16%), whereas the bioconcentration amount of Pb decreased (573, 501, and 301 mg/kg), mainly due to the insoluble PbCO3 and Pb (OH)2. The Pb bioconcentration factor was the highest (15,564) at 4 mmol/L HCO3− due to the maximum strength of cation exchange and cell wall protein C=O. High HCO3− molarities changed the variety of positive ions of cation exchange (HCO3− ≤ 4 mmol/L: Na, K, and Mg; HCO3− > 4 mmol/L: Mg and K), and relieved the breaking of roots, stomatal closure, and vascular system shrinking. Moreover, high HCO3− molarities diminished the C≡C oxidation, enlarged the displacement of SO42− and C-O, and stimulated the methyl transfer reaction and the bonding between -CH3 and Pb. Wendan (a type of pomelo), a popular fruit in China, is less known in other countries. Its peel is widely used in food and traditional medicine. Four different origins (Xuzhou, Taizhou, Zhangzhou, and Meizhou) of Wendan pomelo were selected, and crude extracts were obtained by the Soxhlet extraction method. The composition of Wendan peel was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) in positive ion mode. The compounds were identified by searching the Metabolite Link (METLIN), the Spectral Database for Organic Compounds (SDBS), and by referring to literature reports. A total of 20 compounds were identified among the samples from the four origins, of which 8 compounds were common. The majority of the compounds belonged to the flavonoid and coumarin classes; Meranzin hydrate was identified for the first time in pomelo peel. In vitro antioxidant activity experiments showed that samples from Taizhou, Zhejiang, exhibited the highest antioxidant activity in the DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assays, with values of 0.59 mg/mL, 97.06 μmol TE/g, and 60.62 μmol Fe2+/g, respectively. Samples from Zhangzhou, Fujian, showed antioxidant activity second only to the samples from Taizhou, Zhejiang. The sample from Zhangzhou, Fujian Province, showed excellent inhibitory activity in the α-glucosidase inhibition assay (IC50 = 7.99 mg/mL). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Black ginseng (BG) is processed ginseng traditionally made in Korea via the steaming and drying of ginseng root through three or more cycles, leading to changes in its appearance due to the Maillard reaction on its surface, resulting in a dark coloration. In this study, we explored markers for differentiating processed ginseng by analyzing the chemical characteristics of BG. We elucidated a new method for the structural identification of ginsenoside metabolites and described the features of processed ginseng using UPLC-QTOF-MS in the positive ion mode. We confirmed that maltose, glucose, and fructose, along with L-arginine, L-histidine, and L-lysine, were the key compounds responsible for the changes in the external quality of BG. These compounds can serve as important metabolic markers for distinguishing BG from conventionally processed ginseng. The major characteristics of white ginseng, red ginseng, and BG can be distinguished based on their high-polarity and low-polarity ginsenosides, and a precise method for the structural elucidation of ginsenosides in the positive ion mode is presented. Cationized birch xylan was prepared and its use as a papermaking chemical was evaluated. The focus was on studying the effects of cationized birch xylan on the wet and dry strength of fine paper. The results of the laboratory experiments show that the addition of 3 percent of cationized birch xylan to birch kraft pulp improved the initial wet strength of the web by 30 percent compared to base stock at a solids content of 55%. Furthermore, the tensile stiffness of the wet web increased by approximately a third and the dry tensile strength improved by 26%, while the dry elastic modulus was not changed. The improvements in the strength properties were clear when compared to the base stock, but not as high as achieved with conventionally used cationized starch. The presence of reactive hydrogen-silyl (SiH) bonds in oligomethylhydridesiloxanes provides their widespread use in the building, paper, textile, and rubber industries. Low-molecular fractions of methylhydridesiloxanes, both cyclic and linear, adversely affect the operational properties of oligomer-based materials. The main goal of the present study is detection and identification of these fractions in a 136-157M commercial product, as well as in the co-oligomers synthesized from it. The method of gas chromatography–mass spectrometry has been used in the study. First, it has been proved that an increase in the temperature of the column and evaporator from 60 to 300°C does not change the composition of the low-molecular fractions. Consequently, there is no depolymerization processes related to the formation of low-molecular compounds during the analysis. To perform a qualitative analysis, the components of low-molecular fraction have been separated on a capillary column and then identified using a mass detector with an ion trap. It is shown that electron ionization triggers fragmentation of molecules and the formation of positively charged ions. As for methylhydridesiloxanes, cations with a molecular weight of [M – 15]+ arising from the rupture of the carbon-silyl bond are formed first. When such a rupture occurs in cyclosiloxanes with a total number of units of more than four, further dissociation processes can occur with the detachment of the neutral fragment (methylsilane) and the formation of bicyclosiloxane cations. Since the set of positive ions is individual for each of the components and depends on , a component-wise description of the entire low-molecular fraction becomes possible with a high degree of reliability. The ability of humus substances to form stable complexes with inorganic and organic soil constituents plays a vital role in the generation of environmental pollution, migration, and pollutants transformation. This paper deals with the study of the sorption of metallic elements (Al, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mn, Mg, Zn) in Andosols, Cambisols, and Planosols on Slovak soil types based on the detection of the quality and quantity of humus substances and soil textural properties. Five soil profiles from two areas in the central part of the Western Carpathians on volcanic rocks in Slovakia were investigated. HS values increased with Al, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, and Mg. Fe, Al, Ca, Mg, K, Mn, Cu, and Zn increased with the FA fraction. Al, Ca, Fe, K, and Mg were increasing with increasing HA values. In the HA fraction, a very tight relationship was among K and Fe contents (r = 0.902). In the FA fraction, we found with increasing Cu content, Ca content also increased (r = 0.959). The HS values were positively correlated with the silt and negatively correlated with the clay and the sand fraction. Only the elements Mn and Zn in Planosol were below the detection limit. To quantitatively describe the kind of interaction between ion and solvent, it is convenient to use the concept of negative or positive solvation. We have established earlier that diffusion displacement distance ( d ¯ ) of an ion correlates with its solvation type. The ion is solvated positively if the average d ¯ value exceeds the crystallographic (structural) radius of an ion r i ; otherwise, ion solvation is negative. In this paper, we have estimated the length, time and velocity of ion diffusion displacement (hop) for singly charged ions Li + , Na + , K + , Rb + , Cs + , Me 4 N + , Et 4 N + , Bu 4 N + , F - , Cl - , Br - , BPh 4 - over the temperature range from 273.15 K to 473.15 K and for ions Pr 4 N + , I - , NO 3 - , ClO 4 - at 298.15 K in ethylene glycol. The fact of the negative solvation of almost all ions studied (except Li + , Na + , F - ) in ethylene glycol has been established for the first time. It has been shown that Me 4 N + ion has turned out solvated solvophilically in EG as well as in water while ions Et 4 N + , Bu 4 N + , and BPh 4 - appeared to be solvated solvophobically. We have estimated the temperature of transition T tr (from negative to positive ion solvation) for K + and Rb + ions. It physically corresponds to the absence of solvation of the ion ( d ¯ = r i ).
