Digital Twins (DTs) hold significant promise in addressing the challenges faced by food supply chains (FSCs). This paper aims to provide critical insights into the potential for Digital Twins to meet the key challenges of the FSC and establish a comprehensive conceptual framework for their implementation. Following a systematic literature review (SLR), the study identified 81 peer-reviewed, high-quality papers published over the last decade (2012–2023). The typology-driven thematic analysis emphasises the emergent nature of DTs within FSCs, highlighting their key characteristics including monitoring, real-time simulation, and scenario analysis. The identified characteristics, applications, implementation drivers and barriers of Digital Twin form the basis for a novel conceptual framework for implementing DTs in FSCs. Leveraging insights from Innovation Adoption Theory and the Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework, the study outlines a structured five step implementation process divided into three stages. Notably, technology assessment and performance evaluation emerge as two innovative steps necessary for the successful implementation of DTs specifically, not previously considered by the theory. The study identifies promising avenues for future research. The increasing complexity of industrial systems demands more effective and intelligent maintenance approaches to address manufacturing defects arising from faults in multiple asset modules. Traditional digital twin (DT) systems, however, face limitations in interoperability, knowledge sharing, and causal inference. As such, cognitive digital twins (CDTs) can add value by managing a collaborative web of interconnected systems, facilitating advanced cross-domain analysis and dynamic context considerations. This paper introduces a CDT system that leverages industrial knowledge graphs (iKGs) to support maintenance planning and operations. By employing a design structure matrix (DSM) to model dependencies and relationships, a semantic translation approach maps the knowledge into a graph-based representation for reasoning and analysis. An automatic solution generation mechanism, utilising graph sequencing with Louvain and PageRank algorithms, derives feasible solutions, which can be validated via simulation to minimise production disruption impacts. The CDT system can also identify potential disruptions in new product designs, thus enabling preventive actions to be taken. A case study featuring a print production manufacturing line illustrates the CDT system's capabilities in causal inference and solution explainability. The study concludes with a discussion of limitations and future directions, providing valuable guidelines for manufacturers aiming to enhance reactive and predictive maintenance strategies. Nowadays many processes in the food industry are monitored in an automatic way, with the purpose of minimising the need for workforce and of ensuring the proper control of the quality and safety of the foodstuff. All the sensors share data with a centralised management unit, where often a Manufacturing Execution System collects and evaluates them. As reported in recent research, however, a further step that can be undertaken, exploiting Industry 4.0 enabling technologies, is the implementation of digital twin approaches, with the additional aim to prevent possible issues during production. In line with these considerations, this work aims at showing two different digital twin models intended for improving the control of as many real food systems. Liquid and powder fluids are taken as examples for highlighting the differences in the optimization of the two food processes, as well as for fully exploring the potential of the digital twin approach. The purpose of this paper is to explore adaptation-based and stability-based views of supply chain resilience to analyse what insights these different perspectives, individually and collectively, offer for theory and practice. In the stability-based view, resilience is triggered by disruptions and performance deviationsto return to some 'normal' states. This view accounts for known-known uncertainty. The adaptation-based view shifts the focus from avoiding oscillations and recovering some stable states toward proactive adaptation and performance persistence. The adaptation-based view aims at designing structurally adaptable networks with process flexibility and actively used redundancy. It considers resilience from the value-creation perspective accounting for unknown-unknown uncertainties. Stability-based approach views resilience as an outcome or quantity. Adaptation-based approach considers resilience as a property or quality. A combination of stability- and adaptationbased approaches is imperative for building a strong supply chain immunity through an integration of general protection and adaptability. These approaches complement each other depending on the knowledge of and attitude to uncertainty by decision-makers. A combination of the two views helps consider resilience both as a quantity to measure how sick the supply chain is and to understand how the resilience comes about to ensure the quality of the network health and viability. Photogrammetry systems are widely used in industrial manufacturing applications as an assistance measurement tool. Not only does it provide high-precision feedback for assembly process inspection and product quality assessment, but also it can improve the flexibility and robustness of manufacturing systems and production lines. However, with growing global competition and demands, companies are forced to enhance production efficiency, shorten production lifecycle and increase product variety by incorporating reconfigurable factory design that can meet challenging timeline and requirements. Although dynamic facility layout is widely investigated, the position selection for the photogrammetry system in dynamic manufacturing environment is usually overlooked. In this paper, dynamic layout of the V-STARS photogrammetry system is investigated and optimised in a digital-twin environment using deep reinforcement learning. The learning objectives are derived from the field of view (FoV) evaluation from point clouds 3D reconstruction, and collision detection from the digital twin simulated in Visual Components. Rapid advances in new-generation information technologies have been the main driving force for the transformation of manufacturing enterprises in Industry 4.0. Digital twin (DT), as a key technology to promote intelligent manufacturing, has shown great potential for manufacturing enterprises to create an industrial intelligence-driven production equipment through in-depth integration of cyber-physical systems. However, the lack of a systematic effective DT modelling method with a supporting evaluation metric is the most important factor restricting the application of DT in manufacturing enterprises. To bridge the gap, this paper proposes a novel multi-level modelling and fidelity evaluation (MLM&FE) method of DT for creating smart production equipment in manufacturing enterprises, which could help enterprises establish an industrial intelligence-driven production environment to quickly respond to changes in the customised global market, thus greatly improving competitiveness of the enterprises. Specifically, this paper firstly designs a reference framework for DT-enhanced smart production equipment, on which an MLM&FE architecture is proposed. Then, key implementation methodologies and tools for MLM&FE are introduced from the perspective of data space modelling, virtual space modelling, knowledge space modelling, model integration and evaluation. Supply chains operate in a highly distuptive environment where a SC master plan should be updated in line with disruptions to ensure that a high service level is provided to customers while total cost is minimised. There is an absence of knowledge of how a SC master plan should be updated to cope with disruptions using hybrid modelling. To fill this gap, we present a hybrid modelling framework to update a SC master plan in presence of disruptions. The proposed framework, which is a precursor to a SC digital twin, integrates simulation, machine learning, and optimisation to identify the production, storage, and distribution values that maximise SC service level while minimising total cost under disruptions. This approach proves effective in a SC disrupted by demand increase and lead time extension. Results show that employing hybrid modelling leads to a noticeable improvement in service level and total cost. The outcome of the new knowledge on using hybrid modelling for managing disruptions provides essential learning for the extension of modelling through a digital twin for SC master planning. Production systems have to be adapted continuously to changing circumstances. This means that the responsible production planner has to frequently make decisions about reconfiguring complex systems under uncertainty whose outcome greatly affects the company's business success. Discrete-event simulation is one powerful tool to support the necessary analysis and scenario evaluation, but still remains time-consuming and tricky to set up and to maintain. When implemented as a digital twin of the production system, the simulation model can maintain a high degree of accuracy over a long time period. An approach to realise this potential is presented and illustrated in this paper with a use case from the automotive industry. This paper contributes several new methods and findings to the development of digital twins of production systems: Firstly, it demonstrates how exceptional events in the validation of the digital twin can be handled. Secondly, it shows how structural changes in the system can be discovered using data on machine activity and process mining. Thirdly, the paper introduces a possibility on how to assess the accuracy of the digital twin. The adoption of simulation models as Digital Twins (DTs) has been standing out in recent years and represents a revolution in decision-making. In this context, we note increasingly faster and more efficient decisions by mirroring the behaviour of physical systems. On the other hand, we highlight the challenges to ensure the simulation models validity over time since traditional validation approaches have limitations when we consider the periodic update of the model. Thus, the present work proposes an approach based on the constant assessment of these models through Machine Learning and control charts. To this end, we suggest a monitoring tool using the K-Nearest Neighbors (K-NN) classifier, combined with a p-control chart, to periodically assess the validity of DT simulation models. The proposed approach was tested in several theoretical cases and also implemented in a real case study. The findings suggest that the proposed tool can monitor the DT functioning and identify possible special causes that could compromise its results. Finally, we highlight the wide applicability of the proposed tool, which can be used in different DT models, including near/real-time models with different characteristics regarding connection, integration, and complexity. Digital twins became of greater interest to researchers and practitioners in supply chain and operations management (SCOM). Literature has addressed the need to understand digital twins in SCOM, mostly focusing on fragmented technological solutions and use cases. We start with an integrative literature review to determine which elements belong to research on digital twins in SCOM. We define the seven major elements of a digital twin in SCOM: technology, people, management, organisation, scope, task, and modelling. We also distinguish five major types of digital twins in SCOM: product, process, organisation, supply chain and network-of-networks. Illustration of a SCOM digital twin is provided using an anyLogistix example. We conclude that digital twins in SCOM are not merely a simulation-based replica of a real object but a complex socio-technical phenomenon involved in continuous human-artificial intelligence interactions. This leads to an understanding of the role of digital twins through the lens of Industry 5.0, reconfigurable and viable supply chains. High quality, safe, and reliable batteries are essential for widespread adoption of electric vehicles. Current Li-ion battery pack manufacturing processes rely on manual inspections to ensure electric vehicle battery quality. Such manual quality control is prone to errors, increasing the chances of defective batteries. This is likely to increase safety and reliability concerns in the public imagination, slowing down the adoption of electric vehicles. Furthermore, manual inspection is time-consuming and likely to become a bottleneck in scaling up electric vehicle battery production. A potential solution to address this need for fast and accurate inspection of batteries is the use of machine vision and robotics. In this study, we use digital twin design and simulation to develop a battery module inspection system that uses cobots and machine vision to inspect electric vehicle batteries for defects. Our proposed system can automate visual quality checks that are currently being done by human operators. The proposed cobotic system has been simulated and validated for a variety of battery defects to achieve fast and reliable detection. As electric vehicle adoption accelerates and demand increases, the inability to produce batteries in sufficient quantities has emerged as a critical bottleneck in the electric vehicle supply chain. Given the impending climate change crisis, resolving this bottleneck is imperative to accelerate the transition to a zero-emission electric mobility future. One potential solution is the use of robotics for fast and cost-effective assembly of batteries at scale. This study proposes a three-stage digital twin design and analysis method to develop robotic workcells for fast and cost-effective assembly of electric vehicle battery modules. Using digital twin design and simulation, robotic assembly line configurations have been developed for battery module production at different scales. Digital twin analytics was used to evaluate and optimise the proposed robotic battery assembly system for speed and cost. Industrial automation experts were consulted to further improve robotic work cell layouts to minimise investment in robots. Because digital twins of robotic workcells have been used, the configurations of the battery assembly line, as designed and validated, are ready for immediate implementation. For practitioners, this study offers heuristic methods to determine the appropriate assembly line configuration, the required number of robots and humans, for a desired production volume. The paper describes a smart model for palletising as main intra-logistics task for product-on-pallet distribution, and its development in Logistics 4.0 framework aligned to Industry 4.0. The model is developed in holonic paradigm as a 2-layer Holonic Logistics Execution System (HLES) in semiheterarchical topology. Scheduling of logistics activities and allocation to resources are optimised for global efficiency on compact time periods. The logistics model virtualises physical entities: resources, pallets and orders as holons implemented with digital twin software, and categories of task workloads: resource health monitoring, dispatching and tracking pallet orders, re-assigning jobs at resource failure, which grants reality-awareness and robustness. Global workload optimisation uses Constraint Programming as decision making technology with ILOG optimiser engine as situation-specific solver tool in SaaS cloud model, and delegate multi-agent system (MAS) technology for intelligence distribution. The optimised objective function is a combination of palletising cost weighted by robot speed limits and pallet storage cost in payable stocks. The main constructs are exemplified and validated on a real-life structure with multiple palletising resources in which programmable logic controllers (PLC) coordinate locally the parallel execution of order holons according to their globally optimised sequence. In recent years, the emerging Digital Twin (DT) paradigm under Industry 4.0 has been attracting more attention from both practitioners and academia due to its dynamic capabilities. Most DT studies are theoretical and deal with hypothetical analysis, whereas fewer studies are available on real-life empirical cases. Due to dynamic problem-solving capabilities, DT technologies are widely used in performance improvement analysis in food processing companies (FPC) despite limited implication's for business strategies. Our study incorporates the DT technologies with an implementation case study on FPC and accomplishes the real-life problem of the food processing company (FPC). Moreover, the proposed DT research framework demonstrates the various DT implementation stages, such as strategic mapping and physical-virtual space replica, with rigorous analysis. The results show that DT enhances the existing system's machine availability, allocation efficiency, technical efficiency, worker efficiency, utilization rate, effectiveness, step ratio, and throughput rate. Numerous studies have focused on digital twins (DTs) and their applications. However, a common method for evaluating the performance of DTs is lacking. Digital twins performance assessment mechanism is crucial when improving or monitoring any process or system in a business, such a strategy could serve as a guide to help researchers and practitioners create more effective digital twins. Guided by these challenges, we propose a structured method for measuring the performance and flexibility of digital twins, and our study provides a procedure for quantitative calculation of the performance of DTs based on four key performance indicators (KPIs). Moreover, we propose a new KPI, DTflex, for determining the flexibility of digital twins. We evaluated the performance of DTflex as a KPI to demonstrate its use as a simple tool for designers and practitioners to quickly compare different DT methodologies, which might provide valuable input for the iterative improvement of DTs to increase their efficiency in future applications. The Industry 4.0 revolution is changing the manufacturing landscape. A broad set of new technologies emerged (including software and connected equipment) that digitise manufacturing systems. These technologies bring new vitality and opportunities to the manufacturing industry, but they also bring new challenges. This paper focuses on the impact of Industry 4.0 on production planning approaches and software. We first propose a digital twin framework that integrates production planning systems and frontier technologies. The frontier technologies that may impact production planning software are the internet of things, cloud manufacturing, blockchain, and big data analytics. Second, we provide a state-of-the-art on the application of each technology in the production planning, as well as a detailed analysis of the benefit and application status. Finally, this paper discusses the future research and application directions in the production planning. We conclude that Industry 4.0 will lead to the construction of data-driven models for production planning software. Data has become a high-value commodity in manufacturing. There is a growing realisation that the data-driven applications could become strong differentiators of manufacturing enterprises. To guide the developments in digitisation, a widely accepted framework is needed. In the absence of the universal framework, the components making a digital enterprise are captured in an example framework that is introduced in the paper. The adoption of new technology and software solutions has increased complexity of manufacturing systems. In addition, new product introductions have become more frequent and the demand more variable. A digital space enables optimisation and simulation of decisions before their realisation in the physical space. Predictive modelling with its time dimension is a valuable actor in the digital space. Three challenges of predictive modelling such as model complexity, model interpretability, and model reuse are identified in this paper. The coverage of each challenge in the literature is illustrated with the recently published papers. The main aspects of these challenges and the synthesis of the developments in digital manufacturing are articulated in the form of eight observations that could guide the future research. In this paper, we analyze the literature concerning the implementation of digital twins (DTs) for zero-defect manufacturing (ZDM) following a systematic method and, guided by a preliminary finding that a structured and standardised approach to the development of the DT applications is lacking, we provide a standardised design methodology to guide researchers and practitioners in their efforts to develop DTs regardless of the domain. After examination and interpretation of the literature, we also present the results of our state-of-the-art analysis, discuss the current state and limitations of research and practice, and provide useful insights on this important and complex topic. The design methodology proposed in our study will benefit both practitioners and academicians by covering the essential elements to be considered when developing DTs for ZDM for any applications in this domain. The study also contributes to knowledge by presenting a structured overview of the specific research area with a comprehensive, systematic, and critical analysis of the literature and by providing answers to some fundamental questions in the context of DTs for ZDM. Supply chains (SCs) operate in a highly disruptive environment, where they face a variety of disruptions in product and cash flows. In such an environment, determining suitable inventory and cash replenishment policies ensures that cash and inventory are at the right place at the right time and provides a productive SC with high customer service levels. In this study, we first examine the impact of the disruptions in physical and financial flows on SC performance. We then, investigate the potential of a SC digital twin framework to help decision-makers in managing inventory and cash throughout the SC during disruption, currently absent from the literature. The proposed SC digital twin framework integrates machine learning (ML) and simulation to identify the inventory and cash replenishment policies that minimise the impact of the disruptions on SC performance. This approach proves effective in a SC disrupted by demand increase, capacity reduction, and credit purchase increase. Results show that employing the SC digital twin leads to a noticeable reduction in the cash conversion cycle for upstream members of the SCs. Decentralized periodic event‐triggered control can reduce the working time and data transmissions in the sensor nodes for feedback control loops, making it suitable for wireless networked control systems, especially those with large physical scales, such as smart water distribution systems. However, the design of this control approach requires accurate system model, which is normally difficult to obtain. In this work, we assume a digital twin of the original system can be obtained by some modeling and simulation tools, for example, Simscape in MATLAB/Simulink for water distribution systems, and thus present an event‐triggered controller design approach. We first present the design of such an event‐triggered controller for the digital twin; and then analyze the condition under which if both the original system and its digital twin can be satisfied, the same controller can work for the original system and some type of stability can be guaranteed at the same time. Against the backdrop of smart grid development, the electric power system demands higher accuracy and comprehensiveness in fault analysis. Establishing a digital twin platform for multiple equipment faults represents the future direction of power system development. Presently, while many researchers employ artificial intelligence algorithms to diagnose faults in key equipment such as transmission lines and transformers, intelligent diagnostic methods for busbar faults remain insufficient. Therefore, this paper proposes a busbar fault diagnosis method based on multi-source information fusion. Initially, the diagnostic method for busbar faults is explored, conducting both time-domain and frequency-domain analyses on simulated fault data. The data of this model are optimized using Dempster-Shafer evidence theory to enhance algorithm training speed. Subsequently, BP neural network training is implemented. Finally, validation testing of fault data demonstrates a fault recognition accuracy of 99.1% for this method. Experimental results illustrate the method's feasibility and low computational costs, thereby advancing the development of digital twin platforms for power system fault diagnosis. Vaccine manufacturing fosters the prevention, control, and eradication of infectious diseases. Recombinant DNA and in vitro (IVT) mRNA vaccine manufacturing technologies were enforced to combat the recent pandemic. Despite the impact of these technologies, there exists no scientific announcement that compares them. Digital Shadows are employed in this study to simulate each technology, investigating root cause deviations, technical merits, and liabilities, evaluating cost scenarios. Under this lens we provide an unbiased, advanced comparative technoeconomic study, one that determines which of these manufacturing platforms are suited for the two types of vaccines considered (monoclonal antibodies or antigens). We find recombinant DNA technology to exhibit higher Profitability Index due to lower capital and starting material requirements, pertaining to lower Minimum Selling Price per Dose values, delivering products of established quality. However, the potency of the mRNA, the streamlined and scalable synthetic processes involved and the raw material availability, facilitate faster market penetration and product flexibility, constituting these vaccines preferable whenever short product development cycles become a necessity. Multi-scale modelling techniques are commonly used to characterize heterogeneous rock samples. However, open challenges limit the efficiency of these models. A significant issue is the tradeoff between resolution and field of view (FoV) during imaging. Capturing an image of a heterogeneous rock sample that includes pores of different scales with a large FoV is impossible. Various novel approaches have attempted to solve this problem, but they have inherent limitations such as unrealistic results and high computational costs. In this study, we propose a novel method to generate 3D multiscale images of two heterogeneous rock samples: Berea sandstone and Edward Brown carbonate. We scanned both samples at low and high (HR) resolutions using X-ray microtomography. Our approach involves distinct reconstruction of resolved and unresolved porosity in rock images at lower resolutions. We divide the unresolved porosity into smaller sections, called unresolved templates, using the watershed algorithm to reduce memory allocation. The cross-correlation based simulation approach then finds a suitable replacement template from the HR images, which contain a significant number of micro-pores, using a modified overlap region selection procedure in 3D. We compare the geometrical and petrophysical properties of the reconstructed multi-scale images with those of the HR rock images. The results show good agreement with the HR image properties computed from the direct numerical simulation approach. Additionally, our thus validated method is two to four times faster in constructing multi-scale images. Obtaining real-time physical field data inside the boiler furnace is crucial for combustion diagnostics and optimization. In this work, we propose a fast reconstruction technique for the physical fields in a tangentially-fired coal boiler. The method combines the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) and Conditional Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Networks (cDCGAN) based on the boiler physical field obtained by computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Firstly, CFD simulations are performed using data from the boiler Distributed Control System (DCS). After verifying the CFD results, we expanded the simulation to 105 operational condition cases sample sets. Then, the physical fields of the sample set undergo POD to determine the appropriate number of POD bases, thereby ensuring the accuracy of the reconstruction. Finally, the cDCGAN method is employed to establish the correlation between the POD bases and the operational conditions of the boiler. Results show that the POD-cDCGAN method achieves rapid and accurate reconstruction of temperature and velocity fields, with mean relative error (MRE) below 1.5% and root relative squared error (RRSE) below 5.7%. The reconstruction time is reduced to 10.57s, significantly faster than direct CFD methods. In continuous powder handling processes, precise and consistent feeding is crucial for ensuring the quality of the final product. The intermixing effect caused by agitators, which alters the powder's bulk density, flow rate, and flow patterns, plays a significant role in this process, yet it is often overlooked. This study combines discrete element method (DEM) modeling and experiments using a commercial-scale feeder to propose a Digital Twin (DT) framework. The DEM model accurately captures key flow features, such as bypass trajectories, stagnant zones, and preferential flow patterns, while providing quantitative predictions for the feed factor and zones prone to material accumulation. Scenario analysis is performed to identify the most favorable operating ranges of the screw-agitator ratio and screw speed, considering the cohesive properties of the powder. The study demonstrates that powders with poor flow characteristics require tighter operational constraints, as the screw-agitator ratio is susceptible to variations in mass feed rate. This contribution highlights the importance of selecting an appropriate screw-agitator ratio instead of maintaining a fixed value. While data-driven approaches demonstrate great potential in atmospheric modeling and weather forecasting, ocean modeling poses distinct challenges due to complex bathymetry, land, vertical structure, and flow non-linearity. This study introduces OceanNet, a principled neural operator-based digital twin for regional sea-suface height emulation. OceanNet uses a Fourier neural operator and predictor-evaluate-corrector integration scheme to mitigate autoregressive error growth and enhance stability over extended time scales. A spectral regularizer counteracts spectral bias at smaller scales. OceanNet is applied to the northwest Atlantic Ocean western boundary current (the Gulf Stream), focusing on the task of seasonal prediction for Loop Current eddies and the Gulf Stream meander. Trained using historical sea surface height (SSH) data, OceanNet demonstrates competitive forecast skill compared to a state-of-the-art dynamical ocean model forecast, reducing computation by 500,000 times. Human digital twins are computational models of the human actions involved in interacting and operating technical artifacts. Such models provide a conceptual and practical tool for artificial intelligence designers when they seek to replace human work with intelligent machines. Indeed, digital twins have long served as models of technical and cyber-physical processes. Human digital twins have such models as their foundations but also include models of human actions. As a result, human digital twin models enable technology designers to model how people interact with intelligent technical artifacts. Yet, development of human digital twins is associated with certain conceptual problems. To clarify the basic idea, we constructed a human digital twin for Minsky's M-Machine. The abstract conceptual structure of this machine and its generality allowed us to analyze the general properties of human digital twins, their design, and their use as tools in designing intelligent technologies. Owing to the architected void-filled low-density configurations, metamaterials are prone to defects during the complex manufacturing process, or damages under operational conditions. Recently mechanical cloaking has been proposed to shield the effect of such disorders in terms of homogenized mechanical responses. The major drawback in these studies are that the damage location should be known a priori, and the cloak is designed around that damaged zone before manufacturing. Such postulation does not allow unsupervised damage resilience during the manufacturing and service life of metamaterials by active reconfiguration of the stress field depending on the random and unpredictable evolution of damage. Here, we propose a radically different approach by introducing piezoelectric lattices where the effect of random appearance of any single or multiple disorders and damages with complex shapes, sizes and distributions can be shielded through active multi-physically controlled cloaks by voltage-dependent modulation of the stress fields within the cloaking region. Notably, this can be achieved without breaking periodicity and any additional material in the cloaking region unlike earlier studies concerning mechanical cloaks. The proposed active class of elastic metamaterials will bring a step-change in the on-demand mechanical performance of critically important structural components and unsupervised damage resilience for enhanced durability and sustainability. During service, civil turbofans experience environmentally induced deterioration. Predicting this in a digital service twin model is computationally challenging due to the need to model both deterioration mechanisms and environmental conditions. For compressor erosion, a key challenge is to model particle ingestion throughout a flight mission (FM). During ground operations, these particles may be airborne or deposited on runways and taxiways. This work assesses the impact of the latter on turbofan core compressor deterioration during a mission. The airflow field in front of the engine intake is approximated using potential flow theory. Comparisons with measurements show that the predicted air velocity near the engine is underestimated since the inlet ground vortices generated from viscous effects are neglected. The forces acting on the particles are derived from the flow field. It turns out that most particles are lifted from the ground during take-off (TO). Yet only smaller particles below ≈ 50 µm are ingested into the engine intake. A deterioration model based on flat plate erosion experiments is used to compute mission severity, assuming all particles are similar to medium Arizona Road Dust. The results indicate that the engine's distance from the ground, power setting, and the number of particles on the ground are key parameters influencing the impact of runway and taxiway particles. Considering the underestimation of the airflow field and thus the number of particles ingested, it is concluded that runway and taxiway particles play a major role in turbofan compressor deterioration. To address the problems of low accuracy in fault diagnosis of oil-immersed transformers, poor state perception ability and real-time collaboration during diagnosis feedback, a fault diagnosis method for transformers based on the integration of digital twins is proposed. Firstly, fault sample balance is achieved through Iterative Nearest Neighbor Oversampling (INNOS), Secondly, nine-dimensional ratio features are extracted, and the correlation between dissolved gases in oil and fault types is established. Then, sparse principal component analysis (SPCA) is used for feature fusion and dimensionality reduction. Finally, the Aquila Optimizer (AO) is introduced to optimize the parameters of the Kernel Extreme Learning Machine (KELM), establishing the optimal AO-KELM diagnosis model. The final fault diagnosis accuracy reaches 98.1013%. Combining transformer digital twin models, real-time interaction mapping between physical entities and virtual space is achieved, enabling online diagnosis of transformer faults. Experimental results show that the method proposed in this paper has high diagnostic accuracy and strong stability, providing reference for the intelligent operation and maintenance of transformers. This paper provides the results and the analysis of a study conducted on the processes and technologies currently used by European Union shipyards, and their potential interest in new advanced composite construction technologies, including Adaptive Moulds, Automated Tape Laying, Automated Fibre Placement, Curved Pultruded Profiles, Additive Manufacturing, Hot Stamping, Modular and Serialised Shipbuilding and Digitisation of Production. A new set of indexes are also introduced with the objective of facilitating the evaluation of the technological level of the shipyard, thereby allowing the understanding of the shipyard's interest in new developments. The analysis of the survey conducted shows that almost the 95% of shipyards either currently use or plan to use composite materials, being the composites made of fibreglass and polyester resin the most used. These composites are mainly manufactured by manual lamination and vacuum infusion techniques. The survey has also shown that there is a high interest in the shipyard digitisation and the use of new technologies in the shipbuilding industry, especially for new construction shipyards. The study shows that despite shipyards want to adopt digitisation in engineering and design processes, implementation of new technologies and concepts is being held back by financial cost and uncertainty regarding outcomes such as improved operational efficiency of vessels. The shipyards that do not use composites are less technologically advanced than those that use them, according to the analysis of the technological indexes. Featured Application: using Virtual Tours (VTs) to complement Building Information Models (BIMs) and Internet of Things (IoT) systems as a solution for remote control, building automation systems, and other tasks involved in Computer-Aided Facility Management (CAFM). The aim is to provide contextual access to information and opportunities for interaction, simplifying the task of those responsible for managing and maintaining building assets. This study investigates the integration of Building Information Models (BIMs) and Virtual Tour (VT) environments in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry, focusing on Computer-Aided Facility Management (CAFM), Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMSs), and data Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA). The interconnected nature of tasks throughout a building's life cycle increasingly demands a seamless integration of real-time monitoring, 3D models, and building data technologies. While there are numerous examples of effective links between IoT and BIMs, as well as IoT and VTs, a research gap exists concerning VT-BIM integration. This article presents a technical solution that connects BIMs and IoT data using VTs to enhance workflow efficiency and information transfer. The VT is developed upon a pilot based on the Controlled Environments for Living Lab Studies (CELLS), a unique facility designed for flexible monitoring and remote-control processes that incorporate BIMs and IoT technologies. The findings offer valuable insights into the potential of VTs to complement and connect to BIMs from a life-cycle perspective, improving the usability of digital twins for beginner users and contributing to the advancement of the AEC and CAFM industries. Our technical solution helps complete the connectivity of BIMs-VT-IoT, providing an intuitive interface (VT) for rapid data visualisation and access to dashboards, models and building databases. A digital twin is a new trend in the development of the current smart water conservancy industry. The main research content of intelligent water conservancy is clarified. This paper first summarizes and combs the relevant system architecture of smart water conservancy, and puts forward a smart water conservancy framework based on digital twins, highlighting the characteristics of virtual and real interaction, and symbiosis of the water conservancy twin platform. Secondly, the status quo of intelligent water conservancy "sky, air, ground and water" integrated monitoring technology, big data and artificial intelligence, model platform technology, knowledge graph and security technology is analyzed. From the perspective of application, the research progress of each technology in water security, water resources and hydraulic engineering is reviewed. Although the construction of smart water conservancy has made remarkable progress, it still faces many challenges such as data governance, technology integration and innovation, and standardization. Digital Twin is becoming an increasingly powerful resource in the field of building production, replacing traditional processes in the Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Operations sector. This study is concerned with the development of a DT, enabled by Building Information Modeling, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the Internet of Things to implement space management strategies. It proposes an application case for the Lazio Region headquarters, which has partly adopted smart working typology post-COVID-19. The aim is to create an accurate digital replica of the building based on BIM, integrated with real-time data. This will help to improve the use of space, the management of resources, and the quality of services provided to the community. It also improves energy efficiency, reducing consumption by 530.40 MWh per year and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 641.32 tons of CO2 per year. Conventional patient monitoring methods require skin-to-skin contact, continuous observation, and long working shifts, causing physical and mental stress for medical professionals. Remote patient monitoring (RPM) assists healthcare workers in monitoring patients distantly using various wearable sensors, reducing stress and infection risk. RPM can be enabled by using the Digital Twins (DTs)-based Internet of Robotic Things (IoRT) that merges robotics with the Internet of Things (IoT) and creates a virtual twin (VT) that acquires sensor data from the physical twin (PT) during operation to reflect its behavior. However, manual navigation of PT causes cognitive fatigue for the operator, affecting trust dynamics, satisfaction, and task performance. Also, operating manual systems requires proper training and long-term experience. This research implements autonomous control in the DTs-based IoRT to remotely monitor patients with chronic or contagious diseases. This work extends our previous paper that required the user to manually operate the PT using its VT to collect patient data for medical inspection. The proposed decision-making algorithm enables the PT to autonomously navigate towards the patient's room, collect and transmit health data, and return to the base station while avoiding various obstacles. Rather than manually navigating, the medical personnel direct the PT to a specific target position using the Menu buttons. The medical staff can monitor the PT and the received sensor information in the pre-built virtual environment (VE). Based on the operator's preference, manual control of the PT is also achievable. The scientific field of precision agriculture employs increasingly innovative techniques to optimize inputs, maximize profitability, and reduce environmental impact. However, obtaining a high number of soil samples is challenging in order to make precision agriculture viable. There is a trade-off between the amount of data needed and the time and resources spent to obtain these data compared to the accuracy of the maps produced with more or fewer points. In the present study, the research was based on an exhaustive dataset of apparent electrical conductivity (aEC) containing 3906 points distributed along 26 transects with spacing between each of up to 40 m, measured by the proximal soil sensor EM38-MK2, for a grain-producing area of 72 ha in São Paulo, Brazil. A second sparse dataset was simulated, showing only four transects with a 400 m distance and, in the end, only 162 aEC points. The aEC map via ordinary kriging (OK) from the grid with 26 transects was considered the reference, and two other mapping approaches were used to map aEC via sparse grid: kriging with external drift (KED) and geographically weighted regression (GWR). These last two methods allow the increment of auxiliary variables, such as those obtained by remote sensors that present spatial resolution compatible with the pivot scale, such as data from the Landsat-8, Aster, and Sentinel-2 satellites, as well as ten terrain covariates derived from the Alos Palsar digital elevation model. The KED method, when used with the sparse dataset, showed a relatively good fit to the aEC data (R2 = 0.78), with moderate prediction accuracy (MAE = 1.26, RMSE = 1.62) and reasonable predictability (RPD = 1.76), outperforming the GWR method, which had the weakest performance (R2 = 0.57, MAE = 1.78, RMSE = 2.30, RPD = 0.81). The reference aEC map using the exhaustive dataset and OK showed the highest accuracy with an R2 of 0.97, no systematic bias (ME = 0), and excellent precision (RMSE = 0.56, RPD = 5.86). Management zones (MZs) derived from these maps were validated using soil texture data from clay samples measured at 0–10 cm depth in a grid of 72 points. The KED method demonstrated the highest potential for accurately defining MZs for irrigation, producing a map that closely resembled the reference MZ map, thereby providing reliable guidance for irrigation management. A digital twin (DT) is a virtual/digital model of any physical object (physical twin), interconnected through data exchange. In the context of Industry 4.0, DTs are integral to intelligent automation driving innovation at scale by providing significant improvements in precision, flexibility, and real-time responsiveness. A critical challenge in developing DTs is achieving a model that reflects real-time conditions with precision and flexibility. This paper focuses on evaluating latency and accuracy, key metrics for assessing the efficacy of a DT, which often hinder scalability and adaptability in robotic applications. This article presents a comprehensive framework for developing DTs using Unity and Robot Operating System (ROS) as the main layers of digitalization and communication. The MoveIt package was used for motion planning and execution for the robotic arm, showcasing the framework's versatility independent of proprietary constraints. Leveraging the versatility and open-source nature of these tools, the framework ensures interoperability, adaptability, and scalability, crucial for modern smart manufacturing applications. Our approach was validated by conducting extensive accuracy and latency tests. We measured latency by timestamping messages exchanged between the physical and digital twin, achieving a latency of 77.67 ms. Accuracy was assessed by comparing the joint positions of the DT and the physical robotic arm over multiple cycles, resulting in an accuracy rate of 99.99%. In neurointensive care units (NICUs), particularly in cases involving traumatic brain injury (TBI), swift and accurate decision-making is critical because of rapidly changing patient conditions and the risk of secondary brain injury. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in NICU can enhance clinical decision support and provide valuable assistance in these complex scenarios. This article aims to provide a comprehensive review of the current status and future prospects of AI utilization in the NICU, along with the challenges that must be overcome to realize this. Presently, the primary application of AI in NICU is outcome prediction through the analysis of preadmission and high-resolution data during admission. Recent applications include augmented neuromonitoring via signal quality control and real-time event prediction. In addition, AI can integrate data gathered from various measures and support minimally invasive neuromonitoring to increase patient safety. However, despite the recent surge in AI adoption within the NICU, the majority of AI applications have been limited to simple classification tasks, thus leaving the true potential of AI largely untapped. Emerging AI technologies, such as generalist medical AI and digital twins, harbor immense potential for enhancing advanced neurocritical care through broader AI applications. If challenges such as acquiring high-quality data and ethical issues are overcome, these new AI technologies can be clinically utilized in the actual NICU environment. This study proposes the utilization of immersive digital twins to enhance the comprehension of hydrological and hydraulic systems. The suggested method utilizes game engines to generate dynamic and interactive models that connect raw data to practical insights, enabling a more profound understanding of flood dynamics. This study underscores the wide-ranging usefulness of digital twins in various watersheds by focusing on the development of advanced monitoring systems, the benefits of improved data visualization, and educational outreach. The incorporation of real-time data via IoT technology considerably improves the significance and precision of these virtual models. This novel approach seeks to refashion flood management approaches by cultivating well-informed stakeholders and advocating for effective environmental education, ultimately leading to more resilient and prepared communities. The UK Government's Building Information Modelling (BIM) mandate has encouraged the utilisation of BIM within the Transportation Sector (TS), with research demonstrating positive effects of BIM. However, BIM processes are incipient to TS project implementation across the UK. This paper is carried out to understand the current BIM usage within the UK's TS and how BIM practises and workflows contribute towards the government's NZC approach. We used research questions derived from the population, intervention, comparison and outcome (PICO) system and inclusion and exclusion criteria to screen irrelevant information from a Systematic Literature review with 18 pieces of literature. We identified six key drivers: carbon reduction and BIM, BIM in transportation design, BIM uptake and usage in transportation, BIM in transportation construction and Digital Twins and BIM. It was identified that, with the integration of the Carbon Calculator Tool into Civil 3D, structural and material data can be obtained and areas of Embodied Carbon hotspots can be identified to contribute to reduce overall carbon across a project, which requires further collaboration between software providers and industry leaders for further streamlining the process. A limitation of this research is the requirement for wider study of differing disciplines within the TS, more qualitative research and a lack of information regarding other Carbon Calculator Tools and how compatible they are with Civil 3D. Early defect identification in laser-directed energy deposition (L-DED) additive manufacturing (AM) is pivotal for preventing build failures. Traditional single-modal monitoring approaches lack the capability to fully comprehend process dynamics, leading to a gap in multisensor monitoring strategies. This research proposes a novel in-situ monitoring method using a multi-sensor fusion-based digital twin (MFDT) for localized quality prediction, coupled with machine learning (ML) models for data fusion. It investigates acoustic signals from laser-material interactions as defect indicators, crafting a ML-based pipeline for rapid defect detection via feature extraction, fusion, and classification. This approach not only explores acoustic features across multiple domains, as well as coaxial melt pool images for ML model training, but it also introduces a novel MFDT framework that combines data from coaxial melt pool vision cameras and microphones, synchronized with robotic movements, to predict localized quality attributes. The key novelty in this research is the exploration of intra-modality and cross-modality multisensor feature correlations, revealing key vision and acoustic signatures associated with varying process dynamics. A comprehensive understanding of how multi-sensor signature varies with process dynamics improves the effectiveness of the proposed multi-sensor fusion model. The rise of digital twin-based operational improvements poses a challenge to protecting industrial cyber-physical systems. It is crucial to safeguard digital twins while disclosing internals, which can create an increased attack surface. However, leveraging digital twins to simulate attacks on physical infrastructure becomes essential for enhancing ICPS cybersecurity resilience. This paper introduces an integrated intelligent defense framework called CyberDefender to study various attacks on digital twin-based ICPS from a four-layer perspective (i.e., digital twin-based industrial cyber-physical systems infrastructure layer, honeynet and software-defined industrial network layer, intelligent security platform layer, and smart industrial application layer). To demonstrate its feasibility, we implemented a proof-of-concept (PoC) solution using open-source tools, including AWS for cloud infrastructure, T-Pot for Honeynet, Mininet for SDN support, ELK tools for data management, and Docker for containerization. This framework utilizes an integrated intelligent approach to enhance intrusion detection and classification capabilities for digital twin-based industrial cyber-physical systems (DT-ICPS). The proposed intrusion detection system (IDS) combines two strategies to improve security. First, we present an innovative approach to identifying essential features using explainable AI and ensemble-based filter feature selection (XAI-EFFS). By using Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP), we analyze the impact of different variables on predictive outcomes. Secondly, we propose a hybrid GRU-LSTM deep-learning model for detecting and classifying intrusions. We optimize the hyperparameters of the GRU-LSTM model by using a Bayesian optimization algorithm. The proposed method demonstrates excellent performance, outperforming conventional state-of-the-art techniques with an accuracy rate of 98.96%, which is a remarkable improvement. Human-robot collaboration (HRC) in assembly is becoming increasingly popular in the field of intelligent manufacturing. However, safety concerns remain the most critical issue to be addressed. The complex assembly environment and the individual differences of workers make it challenging to ensure safety effectively. Furthermore, the concept of human-centric manufacturing also places higher requirements on safety and efficiency of HRC assembly. The application of digital twin (DT) technology has bolstered the cognitive and decision-making capabilities in the context of HRC assembly. This technological advancement provides essential support for addressing safety concerns in HRC assembly processes guided by a human-centric approach. A personalised safety detection method for HRC assembly based on DT technology is proposed. This approach involves personalised modelling and simulation of real objects within the HRC process, establishing a collision detection model based on skeleton points. Subsequently, human motion prediction methods drive safety monitoring between humans and robots. Based on classical contagion models we introduce an artificial cyber lab: the digital twin of a complex cyber system in which possible cyber resilience measures may be implemented and tested. Using the lab, in numerical case studies, we identify two classes of measures to control systemic cyber risks: security‐ and topology‐based interventions. We discuss the implications of our findings on selected real‐world cybersecurity measures currently applied in the insurance and regulation practice or under discussion for future cyber risk control. To this end, we provide a brief overview of the current cybersecurity regulation and emphasize the role of insurance companies as private regulators. Moreover, from an insurance point of view, we provide first attempts to design systemic cyber risk obligations and to measure the systemic risk contribution of individual policyholders. Florence counts as one of the cradles of European Renaissance art and architecture where linear perspective first emerged. These developments led to the pivotal role perception played in Florence's architectural and urban design conceptions, as seen in the works of Brunelleschi (1377–1446), Michelozzo (1396–1472), and Alberti (1404–1472), among others. Alberti's De re aedificatoria presented an analogy of the city as a house and vice versa, negating hard distinctions between architectural and urban design, while Alberti's oeuvre, particularly De pictura, underscores the primacy of the eye. This suggests the exploration of mathematical relationships between architectural façades and urban space configurations within the Florentine context. Through this approach, the paper explores the cases of Palazzo Pitti, Strozzi, and Rucellai, and advances ongoing debates regarding Palazzo Rucellai's envisioned finished appearance by using a 3D Digital Twin (DT) of the palace and its immediate urban context to test alternative façade hypotheses. Ultimately, the results unveil the multidimensional character of Renaissance architectural façade design and their urban role as signifiers of the cultural, intellectual, economic, and political valour of their inhabitants. Creating digital twins of scenes has been widely studied in smart city applications. The development of 3D virtual games attracts many researchers. However, most products have high costs, neglect 3D recovery of the moving people, and lack structured analysis. In this paper, we present a mirror world based on PTZ cameras, which creates digital twins of the space and persons from video streamings, including real-time video registration for PTZ cameras and 3D recovery of the human pose and shape. Our goal is to quickly build a digital space to represent and visualize the physical world, leveraging the two tasks to improve the performance of structured scene understanding. We use the scene images from PTZ cameras to create the 3D scene model and propose an image edge alignment method to optimize the texture mismatching during real-time video registration. Then we propose a human analysis network for 3D recovery of the human pose and shape and add refinement to improve performance on two datasets. We place the 3D human bodies in the right position in the mirror world and utilize joint data from specific scenarios to drive the optimization of the system. Consequently, the mirror world provides 3D visualization and structured analysis of the scene with low cost, thereby enhancing users' spatial understanding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
