With a growing emphasis on empowering communities amongst the practices of philanthropic foundations, practitioners recognise the need for giving strategies grounded in communities of practice's contextual and contingent knowledge. This bringing of beneficiaries' lived experiences into grantmaking represents a wider recognition that sees gift‐giving as a dialogical process that uses relationships with community beneficiaries as the point of departure for creating progressive forms of philanthropy, broadly referred to as 'relational philanthropy'. Foundations that declare themselves as relational funders typically take a more trusting approach by offering more unrestricted, longer‐term funding, simplifying reporting requirements, and empowering grantees to use the resources provided more flexibly. In this paper, we argue that relational philanthropy expresses a form of 'relational work', as it possesses a trust‐based character that speaks to the reciprocal power of gift‐giving, whereby both benefactors and beneficiaries receive value from the co‐created, context‐drivengift exchange: beneficiaries receive philanthropic resources (time, treasure, talent, ties) with more control over spending, while the benefactors gain grassroots insights that can inform future funding policies and practices. In this paper, we show that such reciprocity between funders and their beneficiaries is an important step towards empowering communities for three reasons: (1) by strengthening trust in, and sharing power with, their grantees, foundations empower them to engage more thoroughly with their communities; (2) by grantees communicating their community‐level lived experiences to foundations, foundations can develop more informed and relevant grantmaking decisions, and; (3) as reciprocal exchanges are built on trust, this relational philanthropy creates social capital that strengthens relationships and solidarity across civil society. Can NGOs implement rights-based gender equality programs when donor focus on the area is shrinking? This paper explores how one development program has made strategic choices incorporating the interests of multiple stakeholders, addressing donor interests while simultaneously addressing the needs of local communities. It examines the evolution of BRAC's Polli Shomaj, a rural women's civil society organisation designed to challenge power structures through collective action in rural Bangladesh. It draws on interviews with program staff and existing program literature to find that over time, BRAC leadership has narrowed its program focus to shed its broad transformative agenda to focus solely on gender equality through a combination of service delivery and rights-based approaches. The paper suggests that while it is possible for NGOs to promote gender equality through a combination of rights-based and service-delivery approaches, greater focus is needed on challenging power structures to bring about lasting structural change. Sustainable development of tourism symbolizes a type of business activity that satisfies the requirements of both the tourists and the receiving communities. The paper aims to unearth the impact of community empowerment on the sustainable tourism development. Further, local support is incorporated as a mediating variable between the relationship of community empowerment and sustainable tourism development. For data collection, an onsite survey method is employed and the dataset of 368 respondents was analyzed to test the theoretical work. The fit of the framework is evaluated using structural equation modeling (SEM). SEM confirms that all four hypotheses have a statistically significant relationship. The study findings indicate that community empowerment has a positive impact on local support and sustainable tourism development. Further, the study shows local support completely mediates the relationship between the two variables. There is a dearth of empirical research regarding the empowerment of the community, the paper findings will contribute a substantial part to the existing literature on sustainable tourism. Coastal erosion is a growing problem worldwide and seriously threatens coastal infrastructure ecosystems and communities, particularly in areas where urban development has encroached on natural shorelines. Salty urbanism, an approach to urban design that incorporates natural features and works in harmony with coastal environments, offers a promising solution to this problem. This review explores strategies for coastal erosion reduction, particularly emphasizing community participation within the context of salty urbanism. By investigating the advantages of incorporating salty urbanism and community engagement in coastal management through a literature study, this paper explores a case study-Paradeep, a coastal city in India. The aim is to comprehend how salty urbanism principles have been assimilated into coastal erosion initiatives in Paradeep and to identify potential opportunities for further integration to maximize benefits. The results emphasize the importance of integrating salty urbanism and community participation into coastal erosion management strategies, especially in coastal areas where these principles are either lacking or only minimally incorporated, often without a clear recognition of the term "salty urbanism" itself. Utilizing a mixed-methods research approach, the study integrates primary data from case studies and interviews, along with inferences from literature studies to gain valuable insights from coastal community residents and stakeholders. The findings will provide a significant contribution to advancing strategies and initiatives that advocate for sustainable coastal development and management by suggesting ways to incorporate a community participation-based salty urbanism approach in similar contexts. Community–facility linkage interventions are gaining popularity as a way to improve community health in low-income settings. Their aim is to create/strengthen a relationship between community members and local healthcare providers. Representatives from both groups can address health issues together, overcome trust problems, potentially leading to participants' empowerment to be responsible for their own health. This can be achieved via different approaches. We conducted a systematic literature review to explore how this type of intervention has been implemented in rural and low or lower-middle-income countries, its various features and how/if it has helped to improve child health in these settings. Publications from three electronic databases (Web of Science, PubMed and Embase) up to 03 February 2022 were screened, with 14 papers meeting the inclusion criteria (rural setting in low/lower-middle-income countries, presence of a community–facility linkage component, outcomes of interest related to under-5 children's health, peer-reviewed articles containing original data written in English). We used Rosato's integrated conceptual framework for community participation to assess the transformative and community-empowering capacities of the interventions, and realist principles to synthesize the outcomes. The results of this analysis highlight which conditions can lead to the success of this type of intervention: active inclusion of hard-to-reach groups, involvement of community members in implementation's decisions, activities tailored to the actual needs of interventions' contexts and usage of mixed methods for a comprehensive evaluation. These lessons informed the design of a community–facility linkage intervention and offer a framework to inform the development of monitoring and evaluation plans for future implementations. Energy systems are rapidly transforming towards sustainability, involving significant realignments in social, economic and political systems. New actors such as communities are seeking empowerment to engage in transformations. A range of actors has applied the concept of empowerment in energy transformations to signify different ideas for how communities can engage with energy. As such, its meaning is shaped by ambiguities, uncertainties and contestations. Traditionally, a neoliberal discourse has framed empowerment in energy, resulting in a hollowing of the term and questions around what it means, to whom and in which contexts. This paper contributes to this debate by unpacking empowerment in energy transformations in the context of community energy initiatives. Building on interviews and multicriteria mapping techniques, this paper concludes that all energy stakeholders prefer the strongest options for empowerment. However, empowerment is a co‐produced phenomenon revealing a role for all stakeholders in its cultivation. Although frequently perceived as a 'woolly' policy concept and a means to reduce public service delivery costs, co-production can lead to increased quality and efficiency of services. In this paper, we explore the contribution of a community empowerment policy to co-production processes. Analysing empirical findings from a mixed-method, longitudinal study through the lens of Myers et al.'s (2017) Theory of Change, the paper develops a model of a successful co-production process. We show that changes in working practices and shifts in power can create friction between co-producing actors. Kerta Village has ecotourism potential that has not been optimized, such as the potential of waterfall attractions, MSME products, and agrotourism potential of orange plantations. The problems faced are the optimal management of the potential owned, the lack of supporting infrastructure, and the limited capacity of the community in managing potential. This service activity aims to optimize the ecotourism potential of Kerta Village to strengthen tourist attraction. The methods used include field surveys, master plan planning, and community assistance. The results show that with the master plan for the establishment of water attractions can strengthen the tourist attraction of Kerta Village. synergy between ecotourism development and MSME empowerment is important in order to create a mutually reinforcing economic ecosystem. The FotouniForward Project operates within Fotouni, a kingdom situated in the Haut-Nkam Division, in the West Region of Cameroon. The number of Raffia palm groves in the kingdom has experienced a significant decline over the past 15 years. The various factors contributing to the reduction of the groves include agricultural practices (80%), insufficient regeneration efforts (30%), suboptimal farming techniques (26.67%), occurrences of bushfires (11.67%), and the prevalence of diseases (13.33%). The long-term goal of the FotouniForward Project is to regenerate the kingdom's declining resources (including but not limited to Raffia palm groves), promote the kingdom's biodiversity and empower communities to do this work themselves. Specifically, the project envisions a Fotouni kingdom where (a) the unique cultural and ecological heritage is preserved and protected for future generations, while promoting sustainable development and community well-being; and where (b) the natural environment is protected and restored, and wildlife and people coexist in harmony. Risk reduction has become a global focus in disaster management, emphasized by the World Conference on Disaster Reduction (WCDR) in Japan since 2005. The outcome of this conference led to the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015. This Hyogo Framework has been updated with the Sendai Framework (2015-2030), aiming to empower communities to reduce their vulnerability to disaster risks. However, most disaster experiences in Malaysia show that communities tend to rely on external assistance rather than taking the initiative to address and resolve issues themselves. This is because communities should not be seen as passive groups but rather as first responders who need to be empowered through active bottomup involvement. Nevertheless, research on disaster management for empowering communities in Malaysia is still limited. Therefore, this article reviews community action in flood disaster management. It focuses on community empowerment, community action, and community resilience in handling disasters. The methodology used involves literature searches from databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, ResearchGate, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. The final number of selected articles journal are 10. The themes emerging from this review are community knowledge, disaster experience, community leadership, and community engagement. Hence, communities should have comprehensive plan action of disaster management strategies to mitigate the impact of disaster crises and restore their functionality after a disaster. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a way to inspire business firms to perform in a manner appropriate to the desires of their stakeholders, thus, producing them to act dependably for the benefit of the business and society or community through creating a sustainable development program that could, in turn, gain credibility, positive image and reputation. This study highlights pharmaceutical companies’ practices in terms of CSR integration covering the four levels of CSR - philanthropic, ethical, legal, and economic. It will also discuss how do pharmaceutical companies integrate community empowerment in their CSR activities and up to what extent is the level of integration of community empowerment in terms of levels of society – micro, meso and macro. This research study will use the mixed method which are: qualitative and quantitative methods. The following are criteria in the selection of participants for interview. For qualitative approach, there will be twenty participants from five pharmaceutical companies. For quantitative approach (using survey questionnaire), there will be 360 respondents coming from 30 pharmaceutical companies. This research aims to analyze the existing conditions of regenerative tourism development, the level of local community participation and propose an empowerment model in the development of regenerative tourism. Qualitative research with a verification approach is used to analyze research problems. Data is collected through observation, interviews, documentation and literature studies related to the subject being researched. The data analysis technique used is qualitative thematic. The informants involved in this research were local communities, regional government, non-governmental organizations, academics and tourists. The findings of this research are the existence of regenerative tourism practices by local communities and tourists. Local communities have positive attitudes and also tourists' perceptions of regenerative tourism practices. However, tourists want improvements in several other aspects. The level of local community participation in regenerative tourism entrepreneurship was found to be still minimal. This is due to human resources, economic capital and partnerships to manage a regenerative tourism business. Background: Peer-research is steered and conducted by people with lived experience of the issues being researched. This paper explores the value of peer-research in two complex public health intervention evaluations in the UK.Methods: Reports from 18 peer research projects, completed by residents from 12 communities in the UK taking part in two community empowerment interventions, were analysed using cross-case analysis.Results: Undertaking peer research helped to build the evaluation and research skills within individual projects as well as providing data on other outcomes related to the programmes Theory of Change. Some peer researchers, however, felt unprepared for the activity despite support from the academic team and were unsatisfied with project outcomes. While peer research projects provided more opportunities for local residents to engage with the overall evaluations, there was an overreliance on people closely connected to the programmes to be peer researchers. The peer research projects explored topics that were broader than the aims and objectives of the overall programme evaluations. All provided insight into the context in which projects occurred, while some also informed understanding of programme change mechanisms.Conclusions: Including peer research as part of complex public health intervention evaluations can help uncover important contextual and ecological details beyond the reach of more traditional evaluation data collection. Although efforts have been made to connect the conservation of protected areas (PAs) to the livelihoods of people living in adjacent localities through sustainable tourism development, the debate is still evolving and inconclusive. This special issue contributes to the discourse by endeavouring to advance discussions on relationships that exist between protected areas, tourism and community livelihoods. This paper synthesizes accomplishments and challenges that exist in studying linkages between PAs, tourism and community livelihoods, which to date have been sporadic and mostly atheoretical. Empirical evidence from different researchers are highlighted to guide interested stakeholders, policy planners and practitioners to glean and adapt their strategies to achieve integrated conservation and community development. The linkages between PAs, tourism and community livelihoods can best be understood by considering different theories, conceptual frameworks and methodologies used to understand the relationship dynamics with a view to resolve the demands of livelihoods and conservation that have been advanced over the last fifty years. This paper seeks to examine understandings and applications of rural community resilience. Scottish policy has shifted toward neoliberalism and community empowerment, with communities encouraged to play a proactive role in enhancing their own resilience. We argue that it is important to understand the perspectives of multiple stakeholders to identify what practical factors they believe enhance community resilience and to provide a greater understanding of the mechanisms through which community resilience can be delivered. Drawing on qualitative data collection, we question what resilience means and what factors can facilitate it in practice. We find that dual discourses of resilience emerge: the emergency which reflects the policy focus on short-term damage reduction, and the everyday which reflects the desire for more long-term adaptive capacities developing in response to gradual change in rural communities. This paper examines the issue of empowerment in participatory budgeting (PB). We position empowerment as part of the generally agreed theory of change in PB yet acknowledge the limits of an individual construction of empowerment that neglect sufficient attention to dynamic relations of power in participatory spaces and surrounding social contexts. Using the three forms of power theorized by Lukes (1974) and Gaventa (1980), we examine the ways in which these forms of power constrain individual and collective agency and transformative outcomes in participatory projects. We shift the gaze from empowerment to the concept of community power to suggest that getting beyond small adjustments to local services and resource allocations to substantive changes in relations of power may depend on ordinary citizens coming together in sites of radical possibility to define themselves, deliberate, and then act. The abundance of jengkol skin waste becomes useless waste, so creative ideas emerge for the community to use jengkol skin as a source of public finance by making natural dyes as a basic ingredient for written batik dyes and distributed to Batik entrepreneurs such As Syafa Lampung. By exploiting this local potential, it can improve the family economy and even make the environment clean. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach that refers to information related to the research topic. Data were obtained from observation and interviews. The results of the study show that the craftsmen of Batik Tulis As Syafa Lampung do not need to use purchased ink dyes but their waste. Recent studies reported that the implementation of local budgeting in the context of fiscal decentralization policy had no significant contribution in increasing rural community welfare. This study therefore evaluated the local budgeting policy implemented in Indonesia through Village Fund (VF) policy as well as examining the mediating role of local community empowerment. This investigation used crossectional data from 399 respondents from villages in Indonesia. The measures used in this study involved villagers' perception about policy and implementation of village fund, the success of rural welfare and local community empowerment. PLS-SEM was used to test the hyphoteses. The result of this study evidences that perceived of VF usage measured by perceived infrastructure development and perceived basic social services, except for perceived VF usage in rural economic development, have less significant impact on rural community welfare. Moreover, perceived involvement of community empowerment has minimum contribution on perceived rural community welfare. This study provides an understanding of paradox existing in the perceived role of local community empowerment in mediating the effect of local finance budgeting on rural welfare which is still rarely studied particularly in developing countries like Indonesia. Purpose: This paper aims to derive insights from Kongthong village, popularly known as the "whistling village," a low-key rural tourism destination that has often gone under the radar. As an upcoming rural tourism destination, mothers create a unique tune for their children, ensuring that their identity remains unique. This is because the residents of Kongthong have two names: an official name and another in the form of a whistled tune. The primary objective of this study is to better understand the rural tourism activities at Kongthong and to explore the symbiotic relationship between indigenous cultural practices and holistic development through tourism. Design/methodology/approach: The study uses an ethnographic approach wherein the researchers conducted in-depth interviews and group discussions. The study respondents are the village elders, youth, men and women across different age groups. The various governing bodies act as secondary data sources concerning tourism and development. Findings: The study observes that rural tourism activities in Kongthong go hand in hand with understanding indigenous knowledge. The governing bodies and the local community are on the right path to achieving potential growth and preserving the village as a holistic rural tourist destination. Originality/value: Rural tourism in Kongthong highlights the traditional practices of the Khasi community. Owing to this, Kongthong was nominated for the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) best tourism village by the Government of India as it showcases local culture through social, economic and political elements at the destination that add value to a tourism product. Purpose: Community forest enterprises (CFEs) represent a unique business model in the forest sector which has significant potential to foster community development through sustainable utilization of forest resources. However, CFEs are mired in numerous management challenges which restrict their ability to harness this potential. This paper identifies those challenges and, by drawing on the field of social enterprises, offers specific solutions to address them. The paper also enriches the social enterprise literature by highlighting the role of decentralized decision-making and community empowerment in achieving sustainable development. Design/methodology/approach: Using qualitative meta-synthesis, the paper first identifies key challenges from the CFE literature. It then draws on the social enterprise literature to distill actionable insights for overcoming those challenges. Findings: The study reveals how the social enterprise literature can guide CFEs managers in making decisions related to human resource management, marketing, fundraising, developing conducive organizational cultures and deploying performance measures. Originality/value: The paper provides novel and actionable insights into managing and scaling CFEs. It also identifies opportunities for future inter-disciplinary research at the intersection of decentralized management of natural resources and social enterprises that could facilitate progress toward achieving sustainable development. We examined the importance of understanding and incorporating cultural context within Aotearoa/New Zealand when engaging in clinical research and practice. This paper reports on the qualitative findings of a mixed methods study aimed at determining what effect a cardiac risk reduction exercise and lifestyle management programme, embedded within a kaupapa Māori methodological approach, had on Māori participants. This methodology saw participants able to redevelop a western model cardiac risk reduction programme by introducing a Māori worldview. Our study revealed how the kaupapa Māori approach empowered participants to examine and evaluate not only their own health and lifestyle choices, but those of family and the wider community. Combining biomedical and kaupapa Māori components into the programme was found to benefit participants' mental, physical, spiritual and family well-being. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Japanese rural communities have experienced an aging population with a drastic decline in its size while more economic functions and workplaces have become concentrated in urban areas. Some rural communities in remote mountainous areas even face the further serious problem of extinction of their own community. Even with such a difficult situation, some rural communities have been successful in achieving the migration of their young generation back to their rural areas, and even in reviving their energy year by year. The objective of this paper, therefore, is to demonstrate how rural communities in remote mountainous areas in Japan can become empowered and resilient regardless of the serious threat of further depopulation and marginal settlement through a case study of a small-scale rural community in a remote mountainous area of Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. The paper first overviews how rural communities have experienced depopulation over time together with changes in livelihood along with changes in lifestyle. Then, by describing how a small community in the study area was challenged to implement a series of projects by themselves, utilizing their local resources and cultures, it explains how a depopulated community could revive and gain confidence in themselves while receiving a lot of attention from visitors from outside. The study results show that the aged female population in the community is the key human resource as they can actually play an important role in the rural community, producing local valuable products and services. Moreover, the study points out the importance of maintaining and passing on rural communities' identities to the next generations, while explaining why some of the young population now choose to live in such remote rural areas -- a shelter from the overly globalized and industrialized modern society. Background: Despite the proven efficacy of Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) in promoting primary healthcare in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), they are not adequately financed and compensated. The latter contributes to the challenge of high attrition rates observed in many settings, highlighting an urgent need for innovative compensation strategies for CHVs amid budget constraints experienced by healthcare systems. This study sought to identify strategies for implementing Income-Generating Activities (IGAs) for CHVs in Kilifi County in Kenya to improve their livelihoods, increase motivation, and reduce attrition. Methods: An exploratory qualitative research study design was used, which consisted of Focus group discussions with CHVs involved in health promotion and data collection activities in a local setting. Further, key informant in-depth interviews were conducted among local stakeholder representatives and Ministry of Health officials. Data were recorded, transcribed and thematically analysed using MAXQDA 20.4 software. Data coding, analysis and presentation were guided by the Okumus' (2003) Strategy Implementation framework. Results: A need for stable income was identified as the driving factor for CHVs seeking IGAs, as their health volunteer work is non-remunerative. Factors that considered the local context, such as government regulations, knowledge and experience, culture, and market viability, informed their preferred IGA strategy. Individual savings through table-banking, seeking funding support through loans from government funding agencies (e.g., Uwezo Fund, Women Enterprise Fund, Youth Fund), and grants from corporate organizations, politicians, and other donors were proposed as viable options for raising capital for IGAs. Formal registration of IGAs with Government regulatory agencies, developing a guiding constitution, empowering CHVs with entrepreneurial and leadership skills, project and group diversity management, and connecting them to support agencies were the control measures proposed to support implementation and enhance the sustainability of IGAs. Group-owned and managed IGAs were preferred over individual IGAs. Conclusion: CHVs are in need of IGAs. They proposed implementation strategies informed by local context. Both environmental improvement and collective agency over local decisions are recognised strategies for promoting health and health equity. However, both strategies have been critiqued for their association with policies that emphasise local resources and decision-making while the state disinvests in social and environmental determinants of health. This paper explores the role of place-based community empowerment initiatives in building collective control and improving health. We examined the perspectives of participating communities using qualitative data from interviews and observational fieldwork embedded within an evaluation of a national community empowerment initiative: Big Local (funded by The National Lottery Community Fund and overseen by Local Trust). We selected five examples of community action to improve and maintain built environments. We found that while academics (including the authors) are interested in mechanisms to health impacts, participants focused on something more general: delivering benefits to their communities and maintaining services threatened by state disinvestment. Participants sometimes used 'health' as a pragmatic justification for action. We posit that systemic pathways to health impact are plausible even when communities themselves do not forefront health goals. For example, 'quick wins' and 'quick losses' resulting from early community action have potential to galvanise or undermine collective agency, and so affect communities' capability to deliver future improvements to social and environmental determinants of health. However, structural limitations and unequal access to resources limit the potential of communities to make health-promoting change, as some participants acknowledged. This study considers displacement occurring around the Jakarta flood mitigation projects between 2015–17 and explores the emergence of social innovation by affected kampung communities along the Ciliwung River. A framework combining theories on domicide and social innovation is developed to scrutinize two main case studies, Bukit Duri and Kampung Tongkol, revealing their connection to the city's urban development trajectory as well as the continuous struggle over adequate housing for low‐income groups. The study questions official plans, policies and responses towards flood‐induced displacement and resettlement planning. It also brings social innovation into the debate to unpack how displacement became a key moment for transformative change. The paper argues that, although urban eviction is related to globalization, outcomes are not foreclosed. Predominant urban mechanisms are contested, shaped, and transformed by local communities. This qualitative study explores the identity development of five Latinx immigrant college students, focusing on how the stigmatization of Latinx immigrants by white Americans affects Latinx understanding of self and place in U.S. society. This paper focuses on the consequences that these negative external messages directed at Latinx immigrants carry for their ethnoracial identities and sense of belonging in the United States. Findings reveal that while some participants temporarily internalized the negative perceptions associated with being Latinx, they became empowered by others with similar experiences to further advocate for themselves and other minoritized communities. Ultimately, my analysis reveals that what initially weakened and stigmatized this social category of Latinx individuals--the negative perception of them by whites--is also what eventually strengthened, and, in a way, politicized their ethnoracial identities. Kepulauan Anambas District, with 98% of its territory consisting of waters, has promising fisheries potential, However, is inversely proportional to the performance achievement of the fisheries sector during the 2016- 2020 period, which decreased. Nevertheless, overfishing continues to occur in Anambas waters. This study aims to analyze the role of oil and gas companies in efforts to develop aquaculture in Kepulauan Anambas District, the intended role focuses on how aquaculture practices are carried out, the involvement of fishing communities, also the benefits and challenges faced, this research method uses a mixed methods approach, by gathering information from relevant sources, both from the company side as program administrators, and fishermen groups as beneficiaries. The Information gathering was carried out qualitatively with in-depth interviews and quantitatively with questionnaires. The data was collected and analyzed by content analysis techniques and descriptive statistics related to the perceptions of fishermen groups towards sustainable fisheries by measuring using a Likert scale. The object of this research consists of entities of two oil and gas companies that have community development programs in the aquaculture sector, namely Medco E&P Natuna, Ltd and PT. Primer Oil BV-Harbour energy. The sample determined in this study consisted of 19 people divided into managers and company personnel in the CSR department, and cultivator community groups. The results of this study explain that through aquaculture, fishing companies make a positive contribution to the implementation of SDG number 14 concerning life below water, and number 17 concerning partnerships for the goals. Strategically, companies interpret these development goals by providing guidance in the form of investment, infrastructure, transfer of knowledge, technology, and management of aquaculture management which is carried out periodically, in particular, this research also identifies the forms of involvement of the two companies fostered groups, towards the achievements of the community development program, the results of this study also identified that only certain people have an interest in being involved Farther in management. Energy communities (ECs) are considered significant instruments in the energy transition toward a low-carbon world. Important elements for the creation of ECs are the individual drivers, motivations, and barriers that could stimulate their creation. In this article, we focus on developing an understanding of which aspects favor or slow down the establishment of ECs in the community of Segrate (Italy). From a methodological point of view, the authors present a study based on (i) a preliminary desk analysis, consisting of an extensive and multidisciplinary literature review; (ii) an empirical investigation into the case study of Segrate (a municipality in the Lombardy region, Italy), including energy-related data and geospatial information (i.e., from the census and geographic information system); and (iii) data analysis and the collection of original materials incorporating quantitative and qualitative information (based on online surveys and on-the-spot participatory events) relating to the context. As emerges from the survey, in Segrate (considered a typical European middle-sized city), it is difficult to identify the best physical dimension for ECs: the scale of Segrate's neighborhoods do not correspond to the EC dimension usually referred to in the literature. In Segrate, the neighborhoods encompass between 4000 and 8000 inhabitants, while existing ECs (with heating systems) cover between 20 and 1200 apartments. The Gade Clean and Gold is one of the forms of CSR program (Corporate Social Responsibility) of a state-owned enterprise of pawnshop company in addressing the waste problem in Indonesia. The program allows the public to exchange waste in the waste bank that has been established by the pawnshop with gold savings. The research aims to examines the role of The Gade Clean and Gold program in the society’s economic empowerment that is based on environmental hygiene. This study is conducted using descriptive analytics method, based on interview, desk study, and field observation. The results of this paper showed that The Gade Clean and Gold was successful in raising people’s interest in investing in sustainable economies as well as increasing public awareness of the environment. The importance of including members of the public has been accorded a significant position in health planning, service delivery and research. But this position masks a lack of clarity about terms that are used. This paper identifies terms that are in common use in the lexicon of community based involvement and engagement in health with the intention of clarifying meaning and thus reducing ambiguity. We define and distinguish between key terms related to inclusion, we consider the terminology attached to community processes and to the challenges of inclusion and we engage with the strengths and weaknesses of the commonly used metaphor of "a ladder of participation". The Tanzanian government has identified tourism as the most incentivising factor behind the sustainable conservation and economic development of heritage sites. To this end, the government has been transferring cultural heritage sites from the Antiquities Department to other government heritage agencies with a mandate of conservation and income generation through tourism. The intention is to increase the number of tourist destinations but so far, the experience has not been satisfactory. The purpose of this paper is to argue for sustainable management of archaeological sites in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA). The aim is to identify ways to mitigate the physical and anthropogenic challenges facing palaeoanthropological sites by assessing existing conservation policies and identifying modalities for sustainable use of cultural resources through tourism and other incentive mechanisms. Through an exploratory study approach, the paper aims to strengthen conservation and to reduce vulnerability to vandalism, thus enhancing sustainable management of cultural resources and community development. It contributes to improving the level of awareness of sustainable use of heritage resources to eradicate poverty. The legal regime for protection of cultural heritage in Tanzania comprises, among others, the Antiquities Act of 1964 (amended in 1979), as well as the National Museum of TanzaniaAct of 1980. These Acts provide bases for preservation and protection of sites and articles of palaeontological, archaeological, historical and cultural significance including movable and immovable relics. Besides these Acts, Tanzania has policies (Cultural Policy of 1997 and Cultural Heritage Policy of 2008) guiding the protection and management of heritage resources. These policies provide favourable circumstances for safeguarding intangible and tangible cultural resources, including the empowerment of local communities and other stakeholders. Purpose In the present-day context of a sharp decrease in economic and ecological resources, planned conservation and community empowerment are key strategies for sustainable heritage management, because of their cost effectiveness, increased preservation of authenticity and socially development. However, there are still very few practical implementations, so the purpose of this paper is to present applied research to real case studies, as well as to demonstrate that preventive-planned conservation is increasingly successful when linked with the empowerment of local communities and users.Design/methodology/approach This paper proposes a methodology that focuses on two complementary aspects: planned conservation (material component) – undertaken directly on buildings, through inspection, monitoring, maintenance and repair activities; community empowerment (intangible component) – afforded indirectly to users, through participatory strategies and training in prevention, maintenance and use.Findings Based on an estimation of costs, this paper suggests that preventive-planned conservation strategies (pre-damage) can be one-third cheaper than the reactive and interventionist approach (post-damage). Moreover, this study also develops innovative ICT tools for the planned conservation of the built heritage, namely a specifically designed computer software/App (“MPlan”) that can be used to compile maintenance plans.Originality/value The case studies are among the first applications of preventive-planned conservation strategies to the built heritage in Portugal. Different types of case studies are provided to better illustrate the methodological approach adopted and the results obtained. Preparing communities around mines to face the impacts of mine closures is crucial in order to reduce disruptions to their livelihoods. Building the adaptive capacity of these communities will alleviate the burden on governments or mining companies in the future. Unfortunately, adaptive capacity has not yet been integrated into post-mining planning policies. This research aims to develop an adaptive capacity framework for post-mining planning in local communities, focusing on a case study conducted in Indonesia. We developed this framework using the Importance Performance Analysis (IPA) method. The findings indicate that the adaptive capacity framework provides a comprehensive approach to building the capacity to adapt and thrive in post-mining situations. This highlights the importance of continuing to disseminate post-mining plan information, prioritizing access to capital and former mine sites, fostering collaboration, and creating job opportunities. Simultaneously, efforts to increase skills should be reduced, and reallocation of efforts towards community institution building, establishing information centers, and improving community bonds should be prioritized in more important fields and programs. By adopting this framework, communities around mines in Indonesia are expected to enhance their resilience and ability to effectively respond to changing circumstances. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Trust is essential for healthy, reciprocal relationships; creating safe environments; engaging in transparent interactions; successfully negotiating power differentials; supporting equity and putting trauma informed approaches into practice. Less is known, however, about the ways that trust-building may be at the forefront of consideration during community capacity building efforts, what trust-building elements are perceived as essential for optimally engaging communities, and what practices might support these efforts. Methods: The present study examines an evolving understanding of trust-building over the course of 3 years, from qualitative data derived during interviews with nine agency leads from a large and diverse urban community, who are spearheading community-based partnerships to create more trauma-informed communities and foster resiliency. Results: Data reflected fourteen trust-building elements, captured by three themes: 1) Building relationships and engagement (e.g., behavioral practices such as meeting people "where they are at" and creating safe spaces), 2) Embodying core values of trustworthiness (e.g., traits such as being transparent and embodying benevolence), and 3) Sharing decision-making, championing autonomy, and addressing barriers to trust (e.g., collaborative practices such as creating a shared vision and goals and addressing systemic inequities). These trust-building elements are presented in the Community Circle of Trust-Building, which provides an accessible, visual format that can facilitate capacity building efforts within organizations and with the broader community; guide the selection of training opportunities that support healthy interpersonal relationships; and aid in the identification of relevant, supporting frameworks (e.g., health equity, trauma-informed practices, inclusive leadership models). Conclusions: Community engagement and trust are essential for overall health and well-being, increasing equitable access to resources, and supporting an effective and connected citizenry. Food security is a major concern in many countries, including Indonesia. Land productivity has decreased due to shrinking agricultural land, global warming, and land degradation. Precision agriculture (PA) empowers people to use agricultural technology to increase productivity. Therefore, this study aims to examine PA from adopting agricultural machinery. The method used in time series analysis is pooled least squares (PLS). The results show that the transition from conventional methods to using mechanized tools, especially tractors, significantly (at a sig level of 1%) affects rice production in Indonesian rice centers. These results form the basis that Indonesian rice farmers are enthusiastic about various technologies, so the opportunities for PA are significant. However, the gap between PA research in Indonesia and developed countries needs attention, and research collaboration can be a solution. From a practical standpoint, PA integrated with the internet is challenging for Indonesian farmers. Therefore, empowering farmers through various synergy mechanisms is proposed in this study. Local development is multi-faceted, which precipitates the need for transdisciplinary approaches to capture the complexity of issues and possible solutions to development challenges. Six program sites in two provinces located in Southern Luzon, Philippines under the Department of Science and Technology Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (DOST-CEST) program were studied to determine possible science and technology interventions to accelerate local development. The study used a concurrent mixed-method research design where the qualitative and quantitative data are collected during the same stage. Focus group discussions and key informant interviews were conducted to represent local government and sectoral groups. Secondary data - which includes barangay and municipal profiles and local government unit (LGU) data on social services - were collected, and a survey was used to gather information on the needs of the community members. The existing needs include access to healthcare, health facilities, and services, improved access to potable water sources, compliance with solid waste management, educational assistance, sustainable livelihood opportunities, and equipment for better disaster preparedness and response. Theoretical reflections using transdisciplinary approaches such as human ecology and social technology assisted in local development planning and policy recommendations where data and synthesis generated the need for a convergence approach, integrative research, community organizing, and partnerships with higher education institutions. Specific recommendations would include improving the quality of the KALINGA mix for health and nutrition, provision of ceramic water filters for water and sanitation, STARBOOKS (Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosk Station) units, which are like science library-on-the-go kiosks for basic education, and incorporating technologies like an automated rain gauge, flood early warning station, and water level monitoring station in the current disaster risk response and management. Social capital development is indispensable to economic growth and well-being because it allows individuals to contribute meaningfully to a society or community. The density of social networks helps an individual take ownership of control over their community through shared trust, norms, and values. As a component to human capital, social capital needs to be developed with important skills and knowledge, such as leadership, communication, and networking to pursue community empowerment. This study examines the development of social capital and community empowerment at the international level through the international youth exchange program (IYEP) under the Look East Policy (LEP). LEP was implemented in 1982 to develop human capital and increase bilateral collaboration and socio-cultural exchange with East Asian countries, i.e., South Korea and Japan. Based on the secondary data obtained from the Ministry of Youth and Sports and reports from related agencies, this study examined the IYEP of the Malaysia–South Korea and Malaysia-Japan programs and compared their impact on social capital and youth community empowerment. The findings indicate that the IYEP with both countries is expected to strengthen the partnership among participants and help nurture leadership skills. The focus was similar to sociocultural exchange and regional knowledge despite the different scales. Activities such as exchange of knowledge, discussions, enjoying cultural activities, and local activities help the participants build their networking skills and empower the community at both individual and group levels. This article examines what factors lead to the institutional dynamics of sub-district in Indonesia. Institutional dynamics are changes due to interaction patterns, values, culture, and people's tastes. In this study, we look at the institutional dynamics of sub-district from two primary causal factors: endogenous and exogenous. The findings conclude that endogenous factors consist of the sub-district human resources, budget, and creativity/innovation of the sub-district head. In comparison, exogenous factors consist of national policies related to sub-districts; the role of the sub-district supervisor; regent/mayor commitment; public perception; information technology; and area characteristics (rural and urban). Based on these institutional dynamics, it is necessary to reposition sub-district institutions by developing sub-district institutional models for rural areas, urban areas, and a hybrid of both.
