The early studies on biopsychology in China were classified under the name of physiological psychology and comparative psychology. In 1979 the Division of Physiological Psychology of the Chinese Psychological Society was founded. Fifteen years later, the Brain-Behavior Research Center was founded at the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The objective of the Center was to establish a multidisciplinary scientific environment for conducting experimental research on the relationship between brain and behaviour as well as the interactions of the mind and body. A wide range of studies in biopsychology has been conducted in China. The most major research areas are: (1) Behavioural and physiological studies of stress: Research work includes the effect of early environment on stressful responses, interactions of behavioural and endocrine responses under stress, effects of emotional stress on immune function, stress and hypertension and the related role of interleukin-1. (2) Conditioning and immunity: Studies focus on the effects of conditioning in the modulation of bidirectional immune function. Data from different experiments demonstrate that psychological processes are capable of influencing immune function. The neural substrates are also explored. (3) Memory and learning: Studies mostly concentrate on types of memory formation and training stimulus, effect of light exposure and corticosterone on learning and memory, and the role of the hippocampus in learning and memory. (4) Drug addiction: Work mainly focuses on long-term aspects of addiction, including memory, novelty seeking, motivation-related models, and the brain mechanisms underlying morphine psychological dependence. The article discusses the highlights of the GEOANALYSIS 2006 Conference which was held in Beijing, China in September 2006. The conference demonstrated the intense interest in the analysis of geological and environmental materials throughout a broad spectrum of research fields. More than 140 papers were presented at the conference, providing both a wonderful introduction for new students and an amazing variety of methodologies and instrumentation to enlighten even the most seasoned of academics.

This study addresses a paradox in the literature involving the parenting style of Asians: Chinese parenting has often been described as "controlling" or "authoritarian". These styles of parenting have been found to be predictive of poor school achievement among European-Americans, and yet the Chinese are performing quite well in school. This study suggests that the concepts of authoritative and authoritarian are somewhat ethnocentric and do not capture the important features of Chinese child rearing, especially for explaining their school success. Immigrant Chinese and European-American mothers of preschool-aged children were administered standard measures of parental control and authoritative-authoritarian parenting style as well as Chinese child-rearing items involving the concept of "training." After controlling for their education, and their scores on the standard measures, the Chinese mothers were found to score significantly higher on the "training" ideologies. This "training" concept has important features, beyond the authoritarian concept, that may explain Chinese school success. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses a D blood group test performed in a 66-year-old Chinese Han woman using three anti-D commercial reagents. Highlights include identification of the CE serotype using monoclonal anti-C, anti-c, anti-E, anti-e, amplification of the 10 exons of the RhD gene using a polymerase chain reaction assay, and the reaction of the D blood group testing with the ABO/RhD blood type test cards.

The article gives information about papers published in the vol. 18 of the periodical Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics. The eighty items constituted in the volume were categorized into regular articles, reviews, academic, clinical and technical research notes. Atleast 25 items were directly relevant to clinical work in general optometric practice. The majority of the overseas submissions originated from optometry research centres in North America and Australasia, the remainder and an increasing proportion being made up from Hongkong, mainland Europe, South Africa and the Middle East.

An introduction to the special issue of the journal is presented, giving particular focus on graphite research in China.

The author asserts that his research paper did not compare the amplitude of accommodation of Hong Kong Chinese with that of Hong Kong Caucasians. The author agrees with scholar R.A. Weale that photic rather than thermal effects are responsible for the reduction in amplitude of accommodation in the Chinese community. The author suggests that it could be instructive to compare amplitude in a desert-dwelling African, Indian and Chinese community compared to racially similar rain forest dwelling community. The author also ponders over an accurate technique for measurement of pupils of the Chinese eyes.

An interview with Dr. Xiaolong Li, from Southwest, Jiaotong University in China, about his study on battery equalisation technology, is presented. Topics of the interview include what he found most interesting in his area of research, how his work will be used by other researchers, and significant advances he expects to see in this field in ten years.
