The neuroprotective potential of blueberry (BB) extracts against Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been previously hinted at, while its exact mechanism has remained largely enigmatic. Our study endeavored to unravel the impacts and mechanisms by which BB extracts ameliorated the learning and memory prowess of AD-afflicted mice, with a specific focus on the MEK-ERK pathway. We employed 3-month-old APP/PS1 transgenic mice and stratified them into three distinct groups: AD+BB, AD, and control (CT). The Morris Water Maze Test (MWMT) was then administered to gauge their learning and memory faculties. In vitro experiments were executed on Aβ25-35-afflicted rat hippocampal neurons, which were subsequently treated with varying concentrations of BB extracts. We then assessed the expression levels of genes and proteins integral to the MEK-ERKBDNF/UCH-L1 pathway. The data showed that the AD mice demonstrated compromised learning and memory faculties in MWMT. However, the AD+BB cohort showcased marked improvements in performance. Furthermore, in the AD subset, significant elevations in the expressions of MEK2 and ERK1/2 were observed, both at the mRNA and protein levels. Conversely, UCH-L1 mRNA expressions exhibited a decline, while BDNF expressions surged significantly. However, post BB extract treatment, the expressions of MEK2 and ERK1/2 were subdued, with UCH-L1 and BDNF mRNA expressions reverting to control levels. Our findings propounded that BB extracts could offer therapeutic promise for AD by bolstering learning and memory capacities. Background: Efficacious repair of peripheral nerve injury is an unmet clinical need. The implantation of biomaterials containing neurotrophic drugs at the injury site could promote nerve regeneration and improve outcomes for patients. Materials & methods: Random and aligned electrospun poly-ε-caprolactone scaffolds containing encapsulated tacrolimus were fabricated, and the gene expression profile of Schwann cells (SCs) cultured on the surface was elucidated. On aligned fibers, the morphology of SCs and primary rat neurons was investigated. Results: Both scaffold types exhibited sustained release of drug, and the gene expression of SCs was modulated by both nanofibrous topography and the presence of tacrolimus. Aligned fibers promoted the alignment of SCs and orientated outgrowth from neurons. Conclusion: Electrospun PCL scaffolds with tacrolimus hold promise for the repair of peripheral nerve injury. This article reports the production and testing of fibrous materials loaded with tacrolimus, a drug known to improve nerve regeneration, for the surgical repair of peripheral nerve injury. Materials were created with either a randomly orientated structure or an aligned structure that mimics the anatomy of native nerve, and both displayed long-term release of the loaded drug. Schwann cells, which are a critical cell type in nerve regeneration, were grown on the materials and their behaviour was positively influenced by the fibrous surfaces and/or the presence of tacrolimus. Neurons grown on the aligned materials demonstrated directional outgrowth, which may be also beneficial for increasing the rate of regeneration. These materials have the potential to improve outcomes of nerve repair for patients. Numerous studies have shown that an enriched environment can promote ischemic stroke and improve cognitive function. In addition, white matter is closely related to cognitive function. The effects and mechanisms of the enriched environment on white matter recovery after stroke have not been elucidated. This study will analyse the effects of the enriched environment on white matter and cognitive function in the post-stroke brain from the perspective of astrocytes and their secretions. Stroke models were used for middle cerebral artery occlusion model. post-operative rats were divided into sham-operated, standard and enriched environment groups. The degree of cerebral infarction was assessed by TTC staining and the degree of white matter damage was assessed by Luxol-Fast Blue staining. The prognosis after stroke was assessed using the longa score and Morris water maze test. Western Blot and immunofluorescence were used to quantify and localize astrocytes and their associated secretory factors and myelin protein markers. We found that ischemic stroke can cause severe demyelination. After EE treatment, there was a significant increase in cerebral remyelination and a significant improvement in neurological and cognitive functions. Astrocyte, BDNF, and VEGF expression were significantly higher than in rats in the standard circumstances of stroke model. These data suggest that the enriched environment contributes to brain white matter recovery and improvement of cognitive function after stroke. Hydroxysafflor yellow A (HSYA) is the main bioactive ingredient of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L., [Asteraceae]) for traumatic brain injury (TBI) treatment. To explore the therapeutic effects and underlying mechanisms of HSYA on post-TBI neurogenesis and axon regeneration. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned into Sham, controlled cortex impact (CCI), and HSYA groups. Firstly, the modified Neurologic Severity Score (mNSS), foot fault test, hematoxylin-eosin staining, Nissl's staining, and immunofluorescence of Tau1 and doublecortin (DCX) were used to evaluate the effects of HSYA on TBI at the 14th day. Next, the effectors of HSYA on post-TBI neurogenesis and axon regeneration were screened out by pathology-specialized network pharmacology and untargeted metabolomics. Then, the core effectors were validated by immunofluorescence. HSYA alleviated mNSS, foot fault rate, inflammatory cell infiltration, and Nissl's body loss. Moreover, HSYA increased not only hippocampal DCX but also cortical Tau1 and DCX following TBI. Metabolomics demonstrated that HSYA significantly regulated hippocampal and cortical metabolites enriched in 'arginine metabolism' and 'phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan metabolism' including l-phenylalanine, ornithine, l-(+)-citrulline and argininosuccinic acid. Network pharmacology suggested that neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) were the core nodes in the HSYA-TBI-neurogenesis and axon regeneration network. In addition, BDNF and growth-associated protein 43 (GAP43) were significantly elevated following HSYA treatment in the cortex and hippocampus. An emerging body of evidence has demonstrated the beneficial effects of probiotics on various mental health conditions. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we sought to examine the effects of probiotics supplementation on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in adults. PubMed, Scopus, ISI Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library were searched, from database inception to April 2021, for eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs). We pooled mean differences and standard deviations from RCTs using random-effect models. Overall, meta-analysis of 11 trials (n = 648 participants) showed no significant changes in serum level of BDNF following probiotics. However, subgroup analysis revealed that probiotics increased BDNF levels in individuals suffering from neurological disorders (n = 214 participants; WMD = 3.08 ng/mL, 95% CI: 1.83, 4.34; P = 0.001; I2 = 7.5%; P-heterogeneity 0.34), or depression (n = 268 participants; WMD = 0.77 ng/mL, 95% CI: 0.07, 1.47; P = 0.032; I2 = 88.4%; P-heterogeneity < 0.001). Furthermore, a significant increase in BDNF levels was found in studies that administered the mixture of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium genera, and were conducted in Asia. Our main findings suggest that probiotics may be effective in elevating BDNF levels in patients with depression and neurological disorders, and a mixed of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium appear to show greater efficacy than the single genus supplement. Post-stroke depression (PSD), one of the most common complications following stroke, affects approximately one-third of stroke patients and is significantly associated with increased disability and mortality as well as decreased quality of life, which makes it an important public health concern. Treatment of PSD significantly ameliorates depressive symptoms and improves the prognosis of stroke. The authors discuss the critical aspects of the clinical application of prediction and preventive treatment of PSD. Then, the authors update the biological factors associated with the onset of PSD. Furthermore, they summarize the recent progress in pharmacological preventive treatment in clinical trials and propose potential treatment targets. The authors also discuss the current roadblocks in the preventive treatment of PSD. Finally, the authors put postulate potential directions for future studies so as to discover accurate predictors and provide individualized preventive treatment. Sorting out high-risk PSD patients using reliable predictors will greatly assist PSD management. Indeed, some predictors not only predict the incidence of PSD but also predict prognosis, which indicates that they might also aid the development of an individualized treatment scheme. to verify the effects of aerobic exercise training in circulating BDNF, VEGF165 and IGF-1 plasma levels and cognitive function in Alzheimer's Disease (AD) patients. 34 AD patients participated in the study, divided in two groups: Control Group (CG; n = 16) and Training Group (TG; n = 18 – Moderate aerobic training on the treadmill, three times a week, for 12 weeks). BDNF, VEGF165, and IGF-1 plasma levels were considered as a primary outcome. Secondary outcomes included cognitive functions and aerobic fitness. After 12 weeks, maintenance of executive functioning in the TG was found, yet no significant changes on circulating neurotrophins levels were identified. For aerobic fitness, there was an increment in TG group. This study was designed to investigate the possible antioxidant, antiapoptotic and neuroprotective effects of nobiletin on cisplatin-induced neurotoxicity rat model by evaluating neurotrophins, antioxidants and histopathology. Forty male Wistar Albino rats were divided into four groups: control, cisplatin (CIS), cisplatin + nobiletin (CIS + NOB) and nobiletin + cisplatin (NOB + CIS). CIS + NOB was applied nobiletin (10 mg/kg, i.p.) during the last four days whereas NOB + CIS was applied nobiletin during the first four days of the study. Cisplatin (4 mg/kg, i.p. twice a day) was administered to the experimental groups on the 5th day of the study. All rats were sacrificed on the 10th day of the study. BDNF, NGF, G6PD, GPx, tGSH and MDA levels were determined in brain. In addition, routin histolopathological analysis and caspase-3 immunoreactivity assay were conducted. BDNF concentrations increased in nobiletin-administered groups, compared to Control and CIS and that the increase was statistically significant in NOB + CIS (p < 0.05). It was also found that G6PD activity increased (p < 0.05) in the nobiletin-administered groups, compared to control and CIS. Histopathologically, neuronal degeneration, oedema and gliosis increased in CIS compared to Control, and nobiletin administration decreased neuronal degeneration and oedema compared to CIS (p < 0.05). Cisplatin increased (p < 0.05) caspase-3 immunoreactivity in cerebrovascular endothelium and neurons compared to Control, while nobiletin administration decreased caspase-3 immunoreactivity in cerebrovascular endothelium. Caspase-3 immunoreactivity in neurons decreased only in NOB + CIS (p < 0.05). Nobiletin increased BDNF concentration and G6PD activity in brain and when evaluated together with histopathological and immunohistochemical findings, it may have antioxidant, antiapoptotic and neuroprotective effects against cisplatin. Objectives: Although mulberry fruit possesses some biological activities, it is not known how it protects neuronal cells in neurodegenerative diseases. Here, we examined whether mulberry fruit extract (MFE) protected neuronal cells against oxidative stress-induced neurodegeneration. Methods: In this experiments, glutamate challenged hippocampal neuronal HT-22 cell lines as an in vitro model and scopolamine-induced memoty-impairment mice model were used. Results: MFE improved cell viability and glutathione level as well as reducing reactive oxygen species level in glutamate-treated HT-22 cells. Additionally, MFE suppressed apoptotic bodies and mitochondrial depolarization through regulating expression of apoptosis-related proteins. Furthermore, MFE elevated expression of p-TrkB, p-Akt, p-CREB, BDNF, and antioxidant enzymes as well as nuclear translocation of Nrf2. In contrast, the inclusion of K252a, a TrkB inhibitor, or MK-2206, an Akt selective inhibitor, neutralized the neuroprotective actions of MFE. Separately, MFE attenuated scopolamine-induced amnesia via regulating the activities of enzymes related with cholinergic function and the antioxidant system in mice. Additionally, MFE protected neuronal cells in the hippocampal CA1 and CA3 regions in brain of mice. Conclusions: MFE protects neuronal cells against oxidative stress-induced apoptosis through upregulating the expression of BDNF and antioxidant enzymes by stabilizing the activation of the TrkB/Akt pathway. Such an effect of MFE, which includes rich polyphenols, may provide information for its application as a food supplement for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Objective: Alcohol exposure during pregnancy affects the developing fetus and causes a variety of physical and neurological abnormalities. Here we aim to study the effects of vitamin E on spatial learning and memory deficits and on changes in hippocampal brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels following perinatal ethanol exposure in rats. Method: Pregnant Wistar rats received ethanol (4 g/kg) and vitamin E (doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg) on day 0 of gestation (GD) until weaning (28 days). On postnatal days (PND) 29, the performance of spatial learning and memory of rats were measured using the Morris water maze (MWM). The expression of BDNF protein levels in the hippocampus was assayed using BDNF ELISA kits. Results: Ethanol exposed group showed higher escape latency during training, reduced time spent in the target quadrant, higher escape location latency and average proximity in probe test. Vitamin E with doses of 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg significantly reduced escape latency during training. Also, vitamin E (400 mg/kg) significantly increased time spent in target quadrant, decreased escape location latency and average proximity in probe test. Maternal ethanol treatment significantly reduced the expression of BDNF protein in the hippocampus of offspring, whereas administration of vitamin E (400 mg/kg) significantly increased hippocampal BDNF in ethanol-treated rats. Discussion: Vitamin E administration dose-dependently ameliorate learning and memory deficits induced by perinatal ethanol exposure and increased hippocampal BDNF levels. The brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is involved in the plasticity and development of the central nervous system. Thereby the protein synthesis is highly related to neuronal activity, and its signaling pathways are associated with several substances like, e.g. glucocorticoids, which seem to be able to activate BDNF-Tropomyosin receptor kinase B (TrkB). While there is evidence that acute physical stress can result in advantageous physiological outcomes like an enhanced BDNF level, outcome parameters in response to psychosocial stress are primarily focused on psychological parameters. The existing literature pointing on the impact of acute psychosocial stress on physiological parameters is controversial and differs depending on the species, the stressor used, and the study methodology. It was hypothesized that an acute standardized psychosocial stressor would increase the BDNF level and therefore show beneficial physiological outcome parameters through psychosocial stress. The serum BDNF levels of 32 healthy young males (M = 24.31 years of age, SD = 3.35), who performed the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST), were assessed and compared to a control condition. To prove the stress-generating effect of the TSST, additional cortisol levels were measured. Acute psychosocial stress significantly increased the serum BDNF- and the cortisol-level, whereby no alteration was found during the control. This study expands the rare literature focusing on the effect of an acute standardized psychosocial stressor on the BDNF level in healthy humans, including a control condition. Nerve growth factor (NGF), the prototypical neurotrophin first discovered in the 1950s, has recently garnered increased interest as a therapeutic agent promoting neuronal health and regeneration. After gaining orphan drug status within the last decade, NGF-related research and drug development has accelerated. The purpose of this article is to review the preclinical and clinical evidence of NGF in various applications, including central and peripheral nervous system, skin, and ophthalmic disorders. We focus on the ophthalmic applications including not only the FDA-approved indication of neurotrophic keratitis but also retinal disease and glaucoma. NGF represents a promising therapy whose therapeutic profile is evolving. The challenges related to this therapy are reviewed, along with possible solutions and future directions. Hypoxia has been associated with cognitive impairment. Many studies have investigated the role of mTOR signalling pathway in cognitive functions but its role in hypoxia-induced cognitive impairment remains controversial. This review aimed to elucidate the role of mTOR in the mechanisms of cognitive impairment that may pave the way towards the mechanistic understanding and therapeutic intervention of hypoxia-induced cognitive impairment. mTORC1 is normally regulated during mild or acute hypoxic exposure giving rise to neuroprotection, whereas it is overactivated during severe or chronic hypoxia giving rise to neuronal cells death. To examine the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its high-affinity receptor, tropomyosin-related kinase receptor-B (TrkB), in normal and glaucomatous human retinas. Human retinas were collected from 8 donors who had been clinically diagnosed and treated for glaucoma, and from 9 control donors. Immunohistochemical analysis for BDNF and TrkB was performed. The percent of each retina expressing BDNF and TrkB was quantified for the total retinal thickness, and separately for the retinal ganglion cell (RGC) complex + retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL). The expression of each protein was correlated with clinical outcomes obtained from the subject's ocular histories. There was no significant difference in BDNF or TrkB expression when comparing glaucomatous and control retinas. Correlation analysis revealed a significant relationship between BDNF expression and the use of prostaglandin analogs. TrkB expression was highly correlated with the last-measured intraocular pressure (IOP), the use of carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, the use of beta blockers, and the total number of drugs used for the treatment of glaucoma. Topical drugs used to treat glaucoma were associated with an increase in retinal BDNF and TrkB expression in human retina, independent of IOP, which may represent molecular evidence of neuroprotective pathway activation. Background: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays a key role in the processes of withdrawal and addiction in alcohol use disorder (AUD), and is also involved in liver homeostasis. The role of BDNF in liver damage and its link with liver stiffness are not known. We hypothesize that serum BDNF levels are linked to changes in hepatic elasticity, both of which depend on variations in alcohol consumption. Objectives: We aimed to study the evolution of BDNF levels and changes in the liver stiffness (LS) of AUD subjects, within two months following withdrawal. Methods: We measured LS by FibroScan® (as an indicator of the degree of liver fibrosis), gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) levels (as a nonspecific but sensitive marker of liver status) and serum BDNF levels of 62 alcohol-dependent subjects without previously identified liver complications. Measures were obtained at the time of withdrawal (M0) and two months later (M2). Results: BDNF levels increased after alcohol withdrawal and small variations of LS were observed. BDNF values increased significantly according to fibrosis stages measured by LS (p =.028 at M0), and were predicted by GGT levels in a regression model (p =.007 at M0 and p =.003 at M2). Conclusion: In AUD, BDNF levels were associated with measured LS when divided into fibrosis risk categories. A murine osmotic demyelination syndrome (ODS) model of the central nervous system included the relay thalamic ventral posterolateral (VPL) and ventral posteromedial (VPM) nuclei. Morphologic comparisons between treatments have revealed oligodendrocyte changes and, already 12 hours following the osmolality restoration, some heavily contrasted oligodendrocytes formed a unique intracellular primary cilium. This unique structure, found in vivo, in mature CNS oligodendrocytes, could account for a local awakening of some of the developmental proteome as it can be expressed in oligodendrocyte precursor cells. This resilience accompanied the emergence of arl13b protein expression along with restoration of nerve cell body axon hillocks shown in a previous issue of this journal. Additionally, the return of several thalamic oligodendrocyte fine features (nucleus, organelles) was shown 36 h later, including some mitosis. Those cell restorations and recognized translational activities comforted that local repairs could again take place, due to oligodendrocyte resilience after ODS instead or added to a postulated immigration of oligodendrocyte precursor cells distant from the sites of myelinolysis. Glaucoma remains the leading cause of irreversible blindness. Although the loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) is an established hallmark of glaucoma, reduction of intraocular pressure (IOP) is a widely used evidence-based management approach, even in normotensive patients. However, despite optimal pressure control, some patients progress to lose vision. This review provides a summary of the latest methods aimed at reducing RGC loss with the objective of preserving vision, categorized by the mechanism of action. We discuss both the newest ways in which IOP can be reduced, alongside 'pressure-independent' pharmacological therapies and developments in bioengineering. The conducted PubMed search included the terms: 'glaucoma pathophysiology,' 'IOP-lowering agents,' 'retinal ganglion cell apoptosis,' 'neuroprotection,' 'stem cells,' 'imaging.' With many agents failing to successfully translate into clinical use, further understanding of the underlying disease process is required, along with novel biomarkers that will enable timely and reliable quantification of treatment effect. Hydroxysafflor yellow A (HSYA) has been shown to have neuroprotective effects in cerebral infarction. However, its underlying roles in apoptosis and inflammation in Parkinson's disease (PD) are unknown. The present study investigates the effects and underlying mechanisms of HSYA on dopaminergic (DA) neurodegeneration, inflammation, and apoptosis. The PD model was established by 2 μL of 6-hyroxydopamine (6-OHDA) (3 μg/μL) striatal injection in C57BL/6J mice with different doses of HSYA (2, 4, or 8 mg/kg). In vitro, after being treated with HSYA for 1 h, SH-SY5Y cells were exposed to 6-OHDA for 24 h before analysis. Expression of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) in substantia nigra (SN) and corpus striatum (STR) was evaluated by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and western blot. In addition, apoptosis-related and inflammatory proteins were examined by western blot. Administration of HSYA significantly reduced the Apomorphine (APO)-induced rotation, decreased from 122.5 ± 15.1 (6-OHDA group) to 47.2 ± 14.3 (8 mg/kg HSYA group). HSYA partially restored a deficit in the SN and STR of PD mice brains in TH. Furthermore, western blot analysis revealed that HSYA reduced inflammatory proteins, including iNOS, COX-2 and NF-κB and attenuated the elevation of DA neuronal apoptosis observed in PD. In vitro assays showed that HSYA reduced the levels of p-p38 and p-JNK and increased that of p-ERK in 6-OHDA-leisoned SH-SY5Y cells. These findings indicate that HSYA protects against 6-OHDA induced DA neurodegeneration partly by regulating the MAPK inflammatory signalling pathway and apoptosis which highlight its therapeutic potential in the treatment of PD. The review states that antidepressants (ADs) increase brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) transmission concomitantly in the brain and the blood: ADs increasing BDNF synthesis in specific areas of the central nervous system (CNS) could presumably affect megakaryocyte's production of platelets. ADs increase BDNF levels in the CNS and improve mood. In the blood, ADs increase BDNF release from platelets. The hypothesis presented here is that the release of BDNF from platelets contributes to the ADs effects on neurogenesis and on tumor growth in the cancer disease. Oncological studies indicate that chemicals ADs exert an aggravating effect on the cancer disease, possibly by promoting proplatelets formation and enhancing BDNF release from platelets in the tumor. β adrenergic receptors mediate effects via activation of G proteins, transactivation of membrane growth factor receptors, or β adrenergic receptor-β arrestin-facilitated scaffold-mediated signaling. Agonist occupancy of the β adrenergic receptor induces desensitization by promoting β adrenergic receptor kinase phosphorylation of the carboxyl terminal domain, facilitating binding of the amino terminal of the β arrestin, which sterically inhibits interactions between β adrenergic receptors and G proteins and induces clathrin-coated pit-mediated receptor endocytosis. Scaffold formation promoted by β arrestin binding to the β adrenergic receptor activates extracellular regulated kinase 1/2 in a manner which elicits cytosolic retention of, and prevents promotion of nuclear transcriptional activity by, mitogen-activated protein kinase. The β adrenergic receptor kinase also interacts with a yet to be determined microsomal membrane protein via high-affinity electrostatic interactions. We evaluate β adrenergic receptor structure, function, and downstream signaling and β arrestin-mediated desensitization, receptor endocytosis, and scaffold-facilitated signal transduction in order to illumine therapeutic strategies designed to modulate these pathways. We trust these approaches may arm us with the capacity to selectively modulate signal transduction pathways regulating cellular proliferation, immunogenicity, angiogenesis, and invasive and metastatic potential implicated in cancer initiation, promotion, and progression. To review the recent developments on the effect of chronic high mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) on cerebral blood flow (CBF) autoregulation and supporting the notion that CBF autoregulation impairment has connection with chronic cerebral diseases. Method: A narrative review of all the relevant papers known to the authors was conducted. Results: Our understanding of the connection between cerebral perfusion impairment and chronic high MAP and cerebral disease is rapidly evolving, from cerebral perfusion impairment being the result of cerebral diseases to being the cause of cerebral diseases. We now better understand the intertwined impact of hypertension and Alzheimer's disease (AD) on cerebrovascular sensory elements and recognize cerebrovascular elements that are more vulnerable to these diseases. Conclusion: We conclude with the suggestion that the sensory elements pathology plays important roles in intertwined mechanisms of chronic high MAP and AD that impact cerebral perfusion. Objectives: Apigenin is the most common bioflavonoid known to be biologically active after systemic administration and show multiple pharmacological effects. The present study was designed to explore the role of apigenin in pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) kindling associated cognitive and behavioural impairments in the mouse model. Methods: The animals were kindled by injecting a sub-convulsive dose of PTZ (35 mg/kg) on every alternate day, followed by 20 days treatment with apigenin at two different doses (10 and 20 mg/kg). Seizure severity was assessed on every 5th, 10th, 15th, and 20th day during apigenin treatment after a PTZ injection, followed by analysis of cognitive and behavioural functions. Results: Apigenin treatment displayed insignificant effect on seizure severity in kindled mice at both the tested doses, in comparison to control. However, the treatment showed marked increase in per cent spontaneous alterations and decline in the anxiety index in T-maze and elevated plus maze tests, respectively. Apigenin-treated groups showed significant decrease in immobility period in both forced swim and tail suspension tests, without any change in the total locomotor activity in the open field test. Furthermore, increase in the hippocampus protein expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), cAMP response element binding protein (CREB), and phosphorylated CREB, with increased serotonin level were also observed in the treated animals. Discussion: The results of the present study showed that apigenin treatment prevents cognitive deficit and reverses behaviour impairments, without altering seizures severity in kindled mice. Objectives: Ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) is a neurotrophin which could signal neuronal suffering and at the same time acts as a neuroprotective agent. In the present study we aimed to evaluate CNTF serum levels in autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). In fact, considering the role of CNTF as a neuronal damage signal and the role of neuroinflammation, excito-inhibitory imbalance and excitotoxicity in the pathogenesis of ASDs, a possible alteration of CNTF in ASDs could be hypothesised. Methods: We recruited 23 individuals with ASDs and intellectual disability (ID), 20 ID subjects and 26 typical adults. A complete medical and psychopathological characterisation of the participants was performed. CNTF serum levels were measured with ELISA. Results: CNTF serum levels were significantly higher in the ASD + ID group compared to ID (p <.001) or typically developed subjects (p <.001). Conclusions: CNTF may be considered as a potential biomarker candidate for ASDs in the context of severe ID. Our results support the hypothesis of neurotrophic imbalance in ASDs. Objective: Nowadays, there seems to be no decisive way for treatment of spinal cord injury (SCI).Extensive cell death (apoptosis and necrosis) occurring in SCI can cause considerable progressive sensorimotor disabilities. Preventing cell death by improving endogenous regenerative capability could an effective strategy for the treatment of SCI. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of lithium chloride (LiCl) on the cell survival through overexpression of BDNF and NT3 mRNA level and their receptors in the contusion rat models. Methods: Rats were randomly divided into four experimental groups (eight rats/group) including: contused animals (the non-treatment group); contused animals (the control group) which received laminectomy; contused animals received normal saline (vehicle)and contused animals received intraperitoneal injection of 20 mg/kg LiCl three days after surgery. Injection continued for 14 days as treatment. Basso, Beattie, Bresnahan (BBB) rating scale was used to assess the motor function of the rats. To evaluate the histopathological and gene expression analysis, rats were sacrificed 28 days after surgery. Real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was performed to obtain the relative levels of mRNA for BDNF, NT3 and their receptors. Results: The results showed LiCl ameliorates BBB scores via up-regulation of BDNF and TrkB receptors. Also, histological analysis showed that the numerical density per area of TUNEL- positive cells and the percentage of cavity significantly decreased in the LiCl-treated group. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that LiCl protects neural cells and effectively enhances locomotor function, which was done through up-regulation of endogenous BDNF expression in rats with SCI. Background and aim: Recent evidence suggests that growth factors might be involved in the pathophysiology of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The aim of this study was to determine whether serum levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), glial-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), neurotrophin-3 (NT-3), nerve growth factor (NGF), fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were altered in children with ADHD. Methods: Serum levels of BDNF, GDNF, NT-3, NGF, VEGF and FGF-2 were analyzed in 49 treatment- naive children with ADHD and age, gender matched 36 healthy controls using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. ADHD symptoms were scored by Du Paul ADHD Rating Scale and Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Results: We found that serum VEGF levels were significantly lower (p < 0.001) and GDNF levels were significantly higher in ADHD group compared to control group (p = 0.003). However, we found no correlations between ADHD symptoms and serum VEGF or GDNF levels. Furthermore, we observed no significant alterations in serum BDNF, NT-3, NGF, FGF-2 levels in children with ADHD. Conclusion: To our knowledge, the present study is the first to examine serum VEGF and FGF-2 levels in children with ADHD. Our results indicate that VEGF and GDNF might be involved in the etiology of ADHD. The aim of present study was to evaluate the antidepressant-like activity of ellagic acid (EA) in mice-forced swim test (FST) and tail suspension test (TST) and the possible role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in EA's antidepressant-like effect. We found that EA and sertraline did not affect the spontaneous locomotor activity of mice. EA produced statistically significant decrease in immobility time as compared to vehicle group in TST. EA at 1 and 5 mg/kg doses did not produce any significant effect in immobility time as compared to vehicle group in FST. But EA produced significantly reduced immobility time at 2.5 mg/kg dose. EA treatment increased hippocampal BDNF level. This study demonstrates that EA is able to produce antidepressant-like effect in both TST and FST in mice. The intraocular administration of the ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) has been found to attenuate the photoreceptor degeneration and preserve retinal functions in the animal research models of the inherited or induced retinal disease. Studies with the aim of CNTF transfer to the posterior segment inside the eye have been directed to determine the best method for its administration. An ideal delivery method would overcome the eye drug elimination mechanisms or barriers and provide the sustained release of the CNTF into retina in the safest fashion with the minimum harm to the quality of life. Purpose: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and activation of its high affinity receptor tropomyosin kinase (Trk) B promote retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) survival following injury. In this study, we tested the effects of LM22A-4, a small molecule TrkB receptor-specific partial agonist, on RGC survival in vitro and in experimental nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION), the most common acute optic neuropathy in those older than 50 years. Methods: We assessed drug effects on immunopanned, cultured RGCs and calculated RGC survival and assessed TrkB receptor activation by mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase translocation. To assess effects in vivo, we induced murine AION and treated the animals with one intravitreal injection and three-week systemic treatment. We measured drug effects using serial spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) and quantified retinal Brn3A+ RGC density three weeks after ischemia. Results: In vitro, LM22A-4 significantly increased the survival of cultured RGCs at day 2 (95% CI control: 8.4-13.6; LM22A-4: 23.7-30.3; BDNF: 24.3-29.9; P ≤ 0.0001), similar to the effect of the endogenous TrkB receptor ligand BDNF. There was also significant nuclear and cytoplasmic translocation of MAP kinase (95% CI control: 0.9-6.8; LM22A-4: 38.8-84.4; BDNF: 64.0-93.0; P = 0.0002), a known downstream event of TrkB receptor activation. Following AION, LM22A-4 treatment led to significant preservation of the ganglion cell complex (95% CI: AION-PBS: 66.8-70.7%; AION-LM22A-4: 70.0-73.1; P = 0.03) and total retinal thickness (95% CI: AION-PBS: 185-196%; AION-LM22A-4: 195-203; P = 0.002) as measured by OCT compared with non-treated eyes. There was also significant rescue of the Brn3A+ RGC density on morphometric analysis of whole mount retinae (95% CI control: 2360-2629; AION-PBS: 1647-2008 cells/mm2; AION-LM22A-4: 1958-2216 cells/mm2; P = 0.02). Conclusions: TrkB receptor partial agonist LM22A-4 promoted survival of cultured RGCs in vitro by TrkB receptor activation, and treatment in vivo led to increased survival of RGCs after optic nerve ischemia, providing support that LM22A-4 may be effective therapy to treat ischemic optic neuropathy. The neurotrophin β-nerve growth factor (NGF) has been described as an important mediator of seminal plasma-induced ovulation in reflexive ovulators like camelids, but this action has not been evidenced in rabbits. In this study, the mRNA expression of NGF was analysed in rabbit male organs by PCR and in a purified basic fraction of seminal plasma by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry. Besides, the ovulatory response [ovulation rate (OR), corpora lutea number, LH peak and progesterone profile] of 27 rabbit does was recorded after injection with murine NGF, gonadoreline (GnRH) or saline solution (SS). An empty catheter was introduced through the vagina (n=4 animals per group) to simulate the nervous/mechanical stimulus of coitus. Molecular studies confirmed the expression of β-NGF mRNA in the prostate, seminal gland and testicles of male adult rabbits, and the presence of the protein in seminal plasma. For the in vivo experiment, all GnRH-group does exhibited a significantly higher OR (100%) compared to females treated with NGF (30%) and SS (25%), who showed significantly lower LH and progesterone concentrations at 120 min. However, in the non-vaginally stimulated animals, only the gonadoreline group ovulated properly, since no ovulation was recorded in the SS group, and only 17% of the NGF does ovulated; this was associated to a tendency to a higher rate of anovulatory haemorrhagic follicles. mRNA expression of NGF and its presence in seminal plasma evidence a role in rabbit reproduction. Recent studies suggest that nerve growth factor (NGF) protects olfactory cells and axons from injury in vitro. Eighteen Wistar-Albino rats randomly divided into three groups: control group, diabetic group without NGF, and diabetic with NGF. Intranasal NGF (6 µg/day) was administered over a 5-day period. At the end of 30 days, the olfactory epithelium (OE) of NGF-applied diabetic rats regenerated, the epithelium thickness was significantly higher, and caspase-3 expression was not significantly different from the control. The current results demonstrate that intranasally administered NGF significantly reversed OE morphological changes in diabetes by decreasing diabetes-related cell death and inflammation. Four healthy Holstein heifers (235 ± 12 kg) fitted with duodenal and pancreatic cannulas were used to investigate infusion of isoleucine (Ile) on the pancreatic exocrine function in a 4 × 4 Latin square design. Three doses of Ile, 10, 20 and 30 g in 2500 ml water, respectively, were infused into the duodenum over a period of 12 h in Experiment (Exp) 1 and over 10 d in Exp 2. Hourly pancreatic juice and jugular blood were taken during the infusion period in Exp 1, and the blood samples were taken in 2-h intervals over the last 2 d in Exp 2. Compared with no Ile infusion, the Ile infusions in both experiments increased the concentration and secretion rate of the protein, activity of ɑ-amylase and trypsin and plasma cholecystokinin. The secretion rate of ɑ-amylase and the activity of trypsin linearly increased with the Ile doses. The pancreatic juice secretion linearly increased with Ile in Exp 2 but not in Exp 1. Isoleucine linearly increased plasma insulin in Exp 1, but not in Exp 2. No effects of Ile on pH of pancreatic juice, the activity of chymotrypsin and lipase and plasma glucose were found. In conclusion, duodenal Ile infusion could increase the pancreatic exocrine function of Holstein heifers, especially ɑ-amylase, and the increment appeared to be dose and time dependent. Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is a sleep disorder that may affect many brain functions. We are interested in the cognitive consequences of the condition with regard to the quality of life of individuals with this disorder. A debate is still underway as to whether cognitive difficulties caused by obstructive sleep apnea actually induce a “pseudodementia” pattern. This work provides a brief overview of the main controversies currently surrounding this issue. We report findings and opinions on structural and cognitive brain changes in individuals affected by obstructive sleep apnea by highlighting the involvement of executive functions and the possible reversibility of signs following-treatment with continuous positive airway pressure. Much research has been done on this issue but, to the best of our knowledge, a review of the present state of the literature evaluating different points of view has not yet been carried out. Objectives: Normal aging results in cognitive decline and nutritional interventions have been suggested as potential approaches for mitigating these deficits. Here, we used rats to investigate the effects of short- and long-term dietary supplementation with the leucine metabolite β-hydroxy-β-methyl butyrate (HMB) on working memory and cognitive flexibility. Methods: Beginning ∼12 months of age, male and female Long–Evans rats were given twice daily access to sipper tubes containing calcium HMB (450 mg/kg) or vehicle (285 mg/kg calcium lactate) in a sucrose solution (20% w/v). Supplementation continued for 1 or 7 months (middle- and old-age (OA) groups, respectively) before testing began. Working memory was assessed by requiring rats to respond on a previously sampled lever following various delays. Cognitive flexibility was assessed by training rats to earn food according to a visual strategy and then, once acquired, shifting to an egocentric response strategy. Results: Treatment with HMB improved working memory performance in middle-age (MA) males and OA rats of both sexes. In the cognitive flexibility task, there was a significant age-dependent deficit in acquisition of the visual strategy that was not apparent in OA males treated with HMB. Furthermore, HMB ameliorated an apparent deficit in visual strategy acquisition in MA females. Discussion: Together, these findings suggest that daily nutritional supplementation with HMB facilitates learning and improves working memory performance. Objectives:To examine the combined effect of theBDNFVal66Met (rs6265) polymorphism andBDNFDNA methylation on transcriptional regulation of theBDNFgene. Methods:DNA methylation profiles were generated for CpG sites proximal to Val66Met, withinBDNFpromoter I and exon V for prefrontal cortex samples from 25 schizophrenia and 25 control subjects. Val66Met genotypes andBDNFmRNA expression data were generated by transcriptome sequencing. Expression, methylation and genotype data were correlated and examined for association with schizophrenia. Results:There was 43% more of theBDNFV-VIII-IX transcript in schizophrenia samples.BDNFmRNA expression and DNA methylation of seven CpG sites were not associated with schizophrenia after accounting for age and PMI effects.BDNFmRNA expression and DNA methylation were not altered by Val66Met after accounting for age and PMI effects. DNA methylation of one CpG site had a marginally significant positive correlation with mRNA expression in schizophrenia subjects. Conclusions:Schizophrenia risk was not associated with differentialBDNFmRNA expression and DNA methylation. A larger age-matched cohort with comprehensive clinical history is required to accurately identify the effects of genotype, mRNA expression and DNA methylation on schizophrenia risk. Objectives:Catecholamines, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and cytokines may be involved in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. The aim of this study was to examine the associations between serum BDNF levels, plasma catecholamine metablolites, cytokines and the cognitive functions of patients with schizophrenia treated with atypical antipsychotic monotherapy. Methods:One hundred and forty-six patients with schizophrenia and 51 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were examined for peripheral biological markers and neurocognitive test. Results:There were positive correlations between serum BDNF levels and scores for verbal memory and attention and processing speed as well as between serum BDNF levels and negative symptoms. Furthermore, there was a negative correlation between the plasma homovanillic acid (HVA) level and motor function and a positive correlation between the plasma 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG) level and attention and processing speed. There were no significant correlations between interleukin-6 or tumour necrosis factor alpha and cognitive function. Moreover, there were no significant correlations between the plasma levels of HVA, MHPG, cytokines and clinical symptoms. Conclusions:Serum BDNF levels are positively related to the impairment of verbal memory and attention, plasma HVA levels are positively related to motor function, and plasma MHPG levels are positively related to attention in patients with schizophrenia. Introduction:The p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR) is a member of TNF-α receptor superfamily that bind all neurotrophins, mainly regulating their pro-apoptotic actions. Ischemia is a common pathology in different cardiovascular diseases affecting multiple organs, however the contribution of p75NTRremains not fully addressed. The aim of this work is to review the current evidence through published literature studying the impact of p75NTRreceptor in ischemic vascular diseases. Areas covered:In the eye, several ischemic ocular diseases are associated with enhanced p75NTRexpression. Ischemic retinopathy including diabetic retinopathy, retinopathy of prematurity and retinal vein occlusion are characterized initially by ischemia followed by excessive neovascularization. Beyond the eye, cerebral ischemia, myocardial infarction and critical limb ischemia are ischemic cardiovascular diseases that are characterized by altered expression of neurotrophins and p75NTRexpression. We surveyed both clinical and experimental studies that examined the impact of p75NTRreceptor in ischemic diseases of eye, heart, brain and peripheral limbs. Cough is one of the most common complaints for which sufferers seek medical assistance. However, currently available drugs are not very effective in treating cough, particularly that which follows an upper respiratory tract infection. Nonetheless, there has been a significant increase in our understanding of the mechanisms and pathways of the defensive cough as well as the hypersensitive/pathophysiological cough, both at airway and central nervous system (CNS) levels. Numerous molecules and signaling pathways have been identified as potential targets for antitussive drugs, including neurotrophins (NTs). NTs belong to a family of trophic factors and are critical for the development and maintenance of neurons in the central and peripheral nervous system including sympathetic efferents, sensory neuron afferents, and immune cells. Nerve growth factor (NGF) was the first member of the NT family to be discovered, with wide ranging actions associated with synapse formation, survival, proliferation, apoptosis, axonal and dendritic outgrowth, expression and activity of functionally important proteins such as ion channels, receptors, and neurotransmitters. In addition, NGF has been implicated in several disease states particularly neuropathic pain and most recently in the sensitization of the cough reflex. This review will briefly address the peripheral and central sensitization mechanisms of airway neurons and will then focus on NGF signaling and its role in cough hypersensitivity. We have recently reported that long-term memory retention requires synaptic glia for proBDNF uptake and recycling. Through the recycling course, glial cells release endocytic BDNF, a mechanism that is activated in response to glutamateviaAMPA and mGluRI/II receptors. Cortical astrocytes express receptors for many different transmitters suggesting for a complex signaling controlling endocytic BDNF secretion. Here, we demonstrated that the extracellular nucleotide ATP, activating P2X and P2Y receptors, regulates endocytic BDNF secretion in cultured astrocytes. Our data indicate that distinct glioactive molecules can participate in BDNF glial recycling and suggest that cortical astrocytes contributing to neuronal plasticity can be influenced by neurotransmitters in tune with synaptic needs. Introduction:Neuroprotective therapeutics are needed to treat glaucoma, an optic neuropathy that results in death of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Areas covered:The BDNF/TrkB pathway is important for RGC survival. Temporal and spatial alterations in the BDNF/TrkB pathway occur in development and in response to acute optic nerve injury and to glaucoma. In animal models, BDNF supplementation is successful at slowing RGC death after acute optic nerve injury and in glaucoma, however, the BDNF/TrkB signaling is not the only pathway supporting long term RGC survival. No biomarker has been established as a prognostic indicator of acute encephalopathy associated with various etiological factors. In this study, we examined useful prognostic biomarkers in patients with acute encephalopathy associated with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection. The subjects were 11 children with RSV-associated encephalopathy admitted to our hospital. We measured the levels of interleukin (IL)-6, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nitrogen oxide (NO)xin cerebrospinal fluid collected on the day of admission. Using the pediatric cerebral performance categories (PCPC) score as a prognostic indicator, we evaluated the association between the biomarkers and neurologic prognosis. Concerning neurologic prognosis, sequelae were noted in more than 50% of the subjects. There was no association between prognosis and age/sex. Increases in the levels of all biomarkers were observed in all subjects. IL-6 and BDNF levels were correlated with PCPC score, but not with NOx. Of the biomarkers investigated, the IL-6 and BDNF levels in cerebrospinal fluid were shown to be correlated with neurologic prognosis. Because many patients with this disease had severe sequelae, assessment should be conducted by early evaluation of the biomarkers examined in this study with respect to the clinical course. Introduction: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease characterized by motor neuron degeneration in the brain and spinal cord. Treatment development for ALS is complicated by complex underlying disease factors. Areas covered: Numerous tested drug compounds have shown no benefits in ALS patients, although effective in animal models. Discrepant results of pre-clinical animal studies and clinical trials for ALS have primarily been attributed to limitations of ALS animal models for drug-screening studies and methodological inconsistencies in human trials. Current status of pre-clinical and clinical trials in ALS is summarized. Specific blood-CNS barrier damage in ALS patients, as a novel potential reason for the clinical failures in drug therapies, is discussed. Expert commentary: Pathological perivascular collagen IV accumulation, one unique characteristic of barrier damage in ALS patients, could be hindering transport of therapeutics to the CNS. Persistent post-concussion syndrome caused by mild traumatic brain injury has become a major cause of morbidity and poor quality of life. Unlike the acute care of concussion, there is no consensus for treatment of chronic symptoms. Moreover, most of the pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments have failed to demonstrate significant efficacy on both the clinical symptoms as well as the pathophysiologic cascade responsible for the permanent brain injury. This article reviews the pathophysiology of PCS, the diagnostic tools and criteria, the current available treatments including pharmacotherapy and different cognitive rehabilitation programs, and promising new treatment directions. A most promising new direction is the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which targets the basic pathological processes responsible for post-concussion symptoms; it is discussed here in depth. Background: Pro-inflammatory cytokines play an essential role in maintenance of normal brain function as well as in repair after traumatic brain injuries (TBI). However, massive and uncontrolled release of these cytokines, particularly interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 and tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α, can also result in a great deal of additional brain damage. Levels of these cytokines may increase in the brain thousands of times more than do the corresponding levels in serum. Research design: Narrative literature review. Outcome and conclusions: Strategies to control the levels of these pro-inflammatory cytokines and to reduce the cytokine-induced brain damage are discussed. There is extensive evidence from experiments in animal models that suppression of cytokines is effective in ameliorating neurologic damage after TBI. Context: Peripheral axon injury and degeneration are often mediated by oxidative stress and inflammation. The hydroalcoholic extract of the red propolis (HERP) has attracted great attention because of its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Objective: The objective of this work is to study the effect of HERP on nerve repair and functional recovery after sciatic nerve injury (SNI) in rats. Materials and methods: The chemical markers in HERP were identified using high-resolution mass spectroscopy. After axonotmesis of sciatic nerve, ibuprofen (IBP) and HERP treatments were orally administered for 28 d. Behavioural tests were performed weekly after SNI. The myelinated axon number was counted using morphometric analysis. Results: The compounds found in HERP were pinocembrin, formononetin, vestitol, and biochanin A. The animals that underwent SNI showed a significant decrease in motor function based on the Basso, Beattie and Bresnahan scale and sciatic functional index compared with sham animals until 7 d after the surgery (p < 0.05). After 14 and 21 d, the SNI groups treated with either HERP or IBP showed significant improvement (p < 0.01), and the SNI group treated with HERP 10 mg/kg showed accelerated motor recovery compared with the other groups (p < 0.01). SNI caused also a reduction in the myelinated axon counts, and treatment with HERP 10 mg/kg induced a significant increase in the number of myelinated fibres compared with all other groups. Conclusion: HERP promoted regenerative responses and accelerated functional recovery after sciatic nerve crush. The purpose of this work was to investigate the effect of early and long-term low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on oxidative stress and inflammatory biomarkers after acute-traumatic muscle injury in Wistar rats. Animals were randomly divided into the following four groups: control group (CG), muscle injury group (IG), CG + LLLT, and IG + LLLT: laser treatment with doses of 3 and 5 J/cm2. Muscle traumatic injury was induced by a single-impact blunt trauma in the rat gastrocnemius. Irradiation for 3 or 5 J/cm2was initiated 2, 12, and 24 h after muscle trauma induction, and the treatment was continued for five consecutive days. All the oxidant markers investigated. namely thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance, carbonyl, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase, were increased as soon as 2 h after muscle injury and remained increased up to 24 h. These alterations were prevented by LLLT at a 3 J/cm2dose given 2 h after the trauma. Similarly, LLLT prevented the trauma-induced proinflammatory state characterized by IL-6 and IL-10. In parallel, trauma-induced reduction in BDNF and VEGF, vascular remodeling and fiber-proliferating markers, was prevented by laser irradiation. In order to test whether the preventive effect of LLLT was also reflected in muscle functionality, we tested the locomotor activity, by measuring distance traveled and the number of rearings in the open field test. LLLT was effective in recovering the normal locomotion, indicating that the irradiation induced biostimulatory effects that accelerated or resolved the acute inflammatory response as well as the oxidant state elicited by the muscle trauma. Aim:Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) are neurotrophins—proteins that induce the survival, development, and function of neurons. Their role in the development of schizophrenia and mood disorders is widely studied. This study was aimed to determine whether depression affects levels of BDNF and NT-3 in patients with schizophrenia.Methods:Data for 53 Caucasian adult hospitalized patients with chronic paranoid schizophrenia was compared with 27 healthy subjects. Clinical symptoms were assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and positive, negative and general sub-scores, the Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia (CDSS), the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS), and the Clinical Global Impressions scale (CGI). Patients were defined as depressed (SHZ-DEP) with scores CDSS > 6 and HDRS > 7, otherwise they were included into the non-depressed group (SHZ-nonDEP).Results:In total, 17 patients (32.1%) with schizophrenia met criteria for depression. SHZ-DEP patients had higher scores in HDRS, CDSS, PANSS total, PANSS negative, PANSS general and CGI (p < 0.001 for all comparisons). There were no differences in BDNF or NT-3 levels between patients with schizophrenia and controls. BDNF levels were lower in SHZ-DEP compared to SHZ-nonDEP: 18.82 ± 5.95 versus 22.10 ± 5.31 ng/mL,p = 0.045. NT-3 levels were higher in SHZ-DEP compared to SHZ-nonDEP: 133.31 ± 222.19 versus 56.04 ± 201.28 pg/mL,p = 0.033.Conclusion:There were no differences in neurotrophin levels between patients with schizophrenia and controls.
