The concept of the "news desert" no longer accurately describes the state of journalism in the United States. The decline of local news is not limited to rural areas but has spread across the entire country. The loss of local journalism is a crisis that affects both urban and rural communities. The current proposals for funding journalism, such as relying on billionaire buyers or philanthropic interventions, are insufficient to address the problem. What is needed is a massive public investment in not-for-profit news outlets, similar to a Marshall Plan for journalism. Without urgent action, the decline of local news will continue to undermine democracy. [Extracted from the article]
