Line-commutated converters are extensively used as the interface between ac grids and classic HVDC systems. At the inverter side, commutation failure of switches is one of the most common faults that can pose threats to the system operation. Practical and reliable study of such phenomena relies on accurate and efficient converter models for simulations. Recently, a parametric average-value model (PAVM) has been presented for ac–dc rectifiers, which considers the internal faults of the converter. In this paper, the PAVM methodology is extended to the dc–ac inverter systems, including the commutation failure of switches. The proposed PAVM also augments an automatic fault detection technique to determine the faulty switches. Using comprehensive simulation studies, the developed model is verified to accurately predict the commutation failure of switches and reconstruct the waveforms consistent with the detailed switching models of inverters while being computationally more efficient. This paper presents the results of mathematical simulation of processes in argon-hydrogen inductively coupled plasma/radio frequency induction plasma torch for plasma chemical reactions. This first part starts a series of papers for simulation and study of plasma properties for a variety of gases and mixtures, which could be used for a number of prospective technologies. The results of mathematical simulation allow further research on the mechanisms of chemical reactions in argon-hydrogen plasma to increase effectiveness of obtaining the target product. This paper proposes a new method to improve re performance of intra-field interpolation which is the mos~ important element of deinterlacing method. Traditional edge- based methods were poor at determining accurate edge iirection which decides interpolation performance. The 7roposed method decides the direction and slope of edge based on locally adaptive-thresholded binary image to mprove efficiency and accuracy, and it also increased the ~orizontal size of search window to 15 for better direction ietermination at gentle slope. There are few of transient control models are adapted to asynchronous induction coil launcher (AICL) with air core coil. Thus, many papers about AICL were written with the goal of increasing muzzle velocity of projectile. This paper concentrate on how to control the projectile speed and thrust accurately by using improved current filament (CF) method and variable voltage variable frequency (VVVF) scheme. The improved CF method contains mathematical model of three-phase inverter based on switch function, including conventional two level converter and cascaded multilevel converter models. The whole launch process is programmed with MATLAB. Simulation results show that this scheme have a smoother thrust fluctuation on projectile than other driving models. The motor parameters are changing with the temperature and frequency in launching process. Hence, the constant voltage frequency ratio (V/f) in this paper is more simple and reliable than vector control. To verify the control model and simulation results, a nine stages coil launcher prototype is constructed. The measured force and muzzle velocity are basically consistent with simulation results. It is proved that the improved CF method and VVVF strategy is feasible, and it is characterized by its small calculating amount that make it a valuable tool for design of AICL. The simple and excellent control of the thrust during launch process avoids load peaks, which means that the payload is handled more carefully compared to the classical launchers. This paper investigates the use of active aerodynamic surfaces (AASs) to enhance the ride comfort of sport vehicles. AASs are constituted by airfoils that are properly placed on the vehicle chassis, and whose angle of attack can be modulated at high frequency (10 Hz). Thus, AASs can be used to generate a lift force that helps in controlling the vertical acceleration of the sprung mass without negatively affecting the unsprung mass. Thanks to this property, AAS systems can overcome the tradeoff between comfort and road holding. In this paper, a control system is presented along with a detailed analysis of several design choices (controller bandwidth, surface size, and actuator requirements). Furthermore, the effect of several environmental factors is considered: 1) vehicle mass; 2) vehicle velocity; and 3) road roughness. A specific analysis shows that the proposed system can be integrated with classical semiactive suspension control algorithms. Establishing causal relations between random variables from observational data is perhaps the most important challenge in today’s science. In remote sensing and geosciences, this is of special relevance to better understand the earth’s system and the complex interactions between the governing processes. In this paper, we focus on an observational causal inference, and thus, we try to estimate the correct direction of causation using a finite set of empirical data. In addition, we focus on the more complex bivariate scenario that requires strong assumptions and no conditional independence tests can be used. In particular, we explore the framework of (nondeterministic) additive noise models, which relies on the principle of independence between the cause and the generating mechanism. A practical algorithmic instantiation of such principle only requires: 1) two regression models in the forward and backward directions and 2) the estimation of statistical independence between the obtained residuals and the observations. The direction leading to more independent residuals is decided to be the cause. We instead propose a criterion that uses the sensitivity (derivative) of the dependence estimator, the sensitivity criterion allows to identify samples most affecting the dependence measure, and hence, the criterion is robust to spurious detections. We illustrate the performance in a collection of 28 geoscience causal inference problems, a database of radiative transfer models simulations and machine learning emulators in vegetation parameter modeling involving 182 problems, and assessing the impact of different regression models in a carbon cycle problem. The criterion achieves the state-of-the-art detection rates in all cases, and it is generally robust to noise sources and distortions. Multilevel converters with floating capacitors (FCs) are widely applied in recent years in a wide range of industrial applications from high-voltage direct current systems to high power drives. However, some FC topologies lack complete FC voltage balancing capability due to the inherent topology limitation or the insufficient switching state for capacitor balancing. This will result in large ripples on capacitors at low frequency (such as fundamental frequency), limiting their performance and application, particularly, when the fundamental frequency is very low in low-speed drive operations. Typical examples of those multilevel converters are modular multilevel converters (MMC), nested neutral-point-clamped (NNPC) converter, etc. In order to improve the FC balancing for this kind of multilevel converters, this paper proposes a carrier-based pulse-width modulation (PWM) method, named stair edge PWM method. This method can obtain sufficient redundant switching states for FC voltage balancing by producing multiple levels in one PWM period. The FC voltage balancing is thus achieved at switching frequency, which can greatly reduce the capacitor voltage ripple and therefore enable the use of much smaller FCs. Meanwhile, the voltage stress on each device and low $dv/dt$ feature are still the same as the normal multilevel operation, reserving two of the most salient features of multilevel converters. The proposed method also features much simpler and easier implementation compared with space-vector-based approaches, particularly when high-level converters are considered. This paper presents an algorithm for checking and enforcing passivity of behavioral reduced-order macromodels of linear time-invariant systems, whose frequency-domain (scattering) responses depend on external parameters. Such models, which are typically extracted from sampled input–output responses obtained from numerical solution of first-principle physical models, usually expressed as partial differential equations, prove extremely useful in design flows since they allow optimization, what-if or sensitivity analyses, and design centering. Starting from an implicit parameterization of both poles and residues of the model, as resulting from well-known model identification schemes based on the generalized Sanathanan–Koerner iteration, we construct a parameter-dependent skew-Hamiltonian/Hamiltonian matrix pencil. The iterative extraction of purely imaginary eigenvalues of the pencil, combined with an adaptive sampling scheme in the parameter space, is able to identify all regions in the frequency-parameter plane where local passivity violations occur. Then, a singular value perturbation scheme is set up to iteratively correct the model coefficients, until all local passivity violations are eliminated. The final result is a corrected model, which is uniformly passive throughout the parameter range. Several numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The predictive control method deals with the prediction of the motor behavior based on a mathematical model of the motor. This model is dependent on the motor parameters. However, these parameters may not match with their actual values due to the measurement error or they may change during the operation of the motor. All these uncertainties and model inexactitude lead to inaccurate prediction of the motor behavior and deteriorate the performance of the predictive algorithm. This paper presents an extension of the predictive current control (PCC) method to improve the prediction accuracy for a permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). The proposed strategy not only reduces the current ripple but also improves the robustness of the system against parameter uncertainties. Planetary rovers may traverse terrains with complex geometries and variable physical properties, but their mobility behaviors are complicated and difficult to simulate precisely. This article focuses on high-fidelity dynamic modeling and simulation for a type of rovers that incorporate single-input-multi-output joints to enhance terrain adaptability, which has been used on China's Tianwen-1 Mars rover. A novel multibody dynamic model and its solutions are derived first with consideration of single-input-multi-output joints. Then, a unified terramechanics model is proposed, considering variable terrain surfaces and covering rover's motion states of skidding, slipping, and steering, solved the problem of simulation instability caused by model switching between soft and hard terrains. As the contact areas of wheels with various terrains and resultant sinkage are dominant factors to ensure fidelity but difficult to determine, a new terrain modeling method for calculating contact area and wheel sinkage is developed using digital elevation map with physical properties. A simulation system is developed, integrating all the above models, and verified with physical experiments and commercial software. The relative simulation errors that have been achieved are less than 5.9% for bogie angles, 6.1% for drawbar pull, and 3.4% for slip ratios, demonstrating high fidelity simulation results. Co-simulation opens new opportunities to combine mature electromagnetic transients (EMT) and phasor-mode (PM) solvers, and takes advantage of their respective high accuracy and execution speed. In this paper, a relaxation approach is presented, iterating between an EMT and a PM solver. This entails interpolating over time the phasors of the PM simulation, extracting phasors from the time evolutions of the EMT simulation, and representing each subsystem with a proper multiport equivalent when simulating the other subsystem. Various equivalents are reviewed and compared in terms of convergence of the PM-EMT iterations. The paper also considers the update with frequency of the Thévenin impedances involved in the EMT simulation, the possibility to compute the EMT solution only once per time step, and the acceleration of convergence through a prediction over time of the boundary variables. This paper proposes an online parameter estimation method based on a discrete-time dynamic model for the interior permanent-magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs). The proposed estimation technique, which takes advantage of the difference in dynamics of motor parameters, consists of two affine projection algorithms. The first one is designed to accurately estimate the stator inductances, whereas the second one is designed to precisely estimate the stator resistance, rotor flux linkage, and load torque. In this paper, the adaptive decoupling proportional–integral (PI) controllers with the maximum torque per ampere operation, which utilize the previously identified parameters in real time, are chosen to verify the effectiveness of the proposed parameter estimation scheme. The simulation results via MATLAB/Simulink and the experimental results via a prototype IPMSM drive system with a TI TMS320F28335 DSP are presented under various conditions. A comparative study with the conventional decoupling PI control method is carried out to demonstrate the better performances (i.e., faster dynamic response, less steady-state error, more robustness, etc.) of the adaptive decoupling PI control scheme based on the proposed online parameter estimation technique. This paper deals with robust frequency compensation in control of fractional-order plants with an uncertain fractional pole/zero (or specially in control of integer-order plants with an uncertain pole/zero). The specifications yielding a robust compensation are introduced, and fractional-order compensators are proposed for satisfying these specifications in the set-point tracking control of the above-mentioned plants. Also, the infinite ranges for the uncertain parameter of the plant, in which satisfying robust compensation specifications is possible by the obtained compensators, are exactly specified. Furthermore, the stability of the obtained control system is analytically analyzed. Moreover, it is shown that in the special cases, the proposed compensators result in control systems having invariant phase/gain margin regardless of the variations of the uncertain parameter of the plant. The evaluation of the coverage probability of multistream multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications in HetNets subject to noise, fading, and intercell interference is undoubtedly intricate. Unfortunately, the current literature misses its comprehensive evaluation, as the effects of noise and cross-stream correlation are often overlooked. Furthermore, computationally friendly expressions of the coverage probability allowing engineering insights and adaptive system design are lacking. For multistream MIMO zero-forcing beamforming, in this paper we tackle these issues by considering scenarios where a receiver is in the coverage if all of its data-streams are successfully decoded. Assuming the max signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) cell association (CA), we adopt the stochastic geometry tools to provide an upper bound and an easy-to-compute closed-form lower bound on the coverage probability, while their accuracies are confirmed against extensive simulations. Our contributions are as follows. We prove that full correlation of data streams of a given link slightly reduces the coverage performance. We show that from a coverage probability perspective, the single stream communication is preferable. We exploit our analysis to explore several pertinent design issues, which have not fully discussed in the literature. Our results demonstrate tradeoffs between densification and multiplexing gains. We, further, see that by appropriately designating feedback channel with modest capacity 8 bits per frame per user, the spatial throughput grows by nearly 180 $\%$ over the conventional 1-bit feedback scenario. This paper investigates the slow fading single-antenna wiretap channel with imperfect channel state information (CSI) and studies an on–off transmission scheme with fixed communication rate, secrecy rate, and transmit power for maximizing the secrecy throughput under the constraints of secrecy outage probability (SOP) and reliability outage probability (ROP). We first solve this problem in a special case without ROP constraint for which the optimal secrecy throughput is obtained under SOP constraint. The result for the special case gives us an upper bound for the secrecy throughput with imperfect CSI. With the help of this special case, a general case with ROP constraint is studied. In this case, the problem is transformed into a one-dimensional (1-D) search problem on a finite interval, which can be solved either by the exhaustive 1-D search to obtain the optimal solution or by the golden search method (GSM) to obtain a suboptimal solution. Simulation results are finally presented to validate the theoretical analysis and show that the performance obtained by using the GSM based 1-D search is very close to that of exhaustive 1-D search. This paper presents both an event- and a self-triggered sampling and regulation scheme for continuous time linear dynamic systems by using zero-sum game formulation. A novel performance index is defined wherein the control policy is treated as the first player and the threshold for control input error due to aperiodic dynamic feedback is treated as the second player. The optimal control policy and sampling intervals are generated using the saddle point or Nash equilibrium solution, which is obtained from the corresponding game algebraic Riccati equation. To determine the optimal event-based sampling scheme, an event-triggering condition is derived by utilizing the worst case control input error as the threshold. To avoid the additional hardware for the event-triggering mechanism, a near optimal self-triggering condition is derived to determine the future sampling instants given the current state vector. To guarantee Zeno-free behavior in both the event- and self-triggered closed-loop systems, the minimum intersample times are shown to be lower bounded by a nonzero positive number. This paper presents a novel oversampling deadbeat current control approach for permanent magnet synchronous motor drives capable of operating at a controller sampling frequency multiple of the power converter switching frequency. Model-based controllers suffer from heavy computational demand and performance degradation due to parameter uncertainties. The proposed controller concurrently with field-programmable gate array implementation permits to achieve a constant switching frequency and an optimal current ripple along with a high current-loop bandwidth and robust behavior to parameter variation. A disturbance observer has been added to the proposed controller in order to compensate for the converter voltage distortions. Since 3GPP has introduced sensing-based semi-persistent scheduling (SPS) into the MAC layer of LTE-V2X Mode 4 in release 14, various studies have been carried out to evaluate its performance. However, until now, there is still no clear mathematical expression for the reliability of this scheduling. To this end, we try to provide a theoretical representation of the scheduling reliability. Firstly, we present a description of the physical layer and MAC layer of sensing-based SPS, and then we abstract the scheduling mathematically and give the definition of the scheduling reliability and channel busy rate. Secondly, according to the characteristics of semi-persistent of scheduling, we formulate the reliability equation through the principle of iteration, thereby obtaining the closed-form expression of the scheduling reliability. Finally, we compare the theoretical representation of reliability with system simulations, and results show that the theoretical curve can represent the reliability of scheduling excellently. This paper presents the interaction between the overhead transmission lines (OHTLs) and their towers. In this paper, the electric field around the tower of the overhead transmission lines is calculated. The charge simulation method, combined with the image method, is used to develop a model that consists of subconductors of the OHTLs and the tower. The charges on the surface of each subconductor of the overhead transmission lines are simulated by a set of infinite line charges, of various charge densities, along the length of the subconductor, and the induced charges on the surface of the tower are simulated by a set of finite line charges. The introduction of communication systems to power system controllers has brought in another layer of complexity in their design and operation. In this paper, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle charging facility is studied. A linearized model of the facility is built, including both the dc/dc and dc/ac converters of the distributed energy resources. In addition, a control strategy that includes both local and networked loops is proposed to monitor and control the dc bus voltage of a local energy storage unit. This dc bus voltage is crucial to the self-sustaining capabilities of the system. A review of challenges and opportunities in networked control systems is presented, and the impacts of communication factors to the charging facility stability are analyzed. Finally, a real-time simulation platform which combines both electrical and communication networks is presented to validate the small-signal model, control strategy, and stability analysis including the communication effects. This paper presents a new reliability-based incremental phasor measurement unit (PMU) placement method via an enumeration-based integer linear programming optimization approach. By evaluating the proposed reliability indices for node and system observability, incremental PMUs are sequentially placed on the locations where the reliability of entire system's observability can be best improved at each step. As a result, a pre-set desired reliability of the system's observability can be achieved while using the minimal number of PMUs. The proposed method is generic and flexible in a way that different kinds of failures that impact the reliability of system observability can be easily included in the method. The 1st-order and 2nd-order failures of PMUs and lines are considered in this paper. The proposed method is validated using a 4-node system, the IEEE 14-node system and the IEEE RTS 96 test system. Simulation results show that the proposed method is effective and efficient in enhancing the reliability of observability for any system regardless of what the initial PMU placement of the system may be. Some soft magnetic materials are strongly dependent on the temperature, because of their low Curie temperature. In order to predict their behavior in electrical devices, engineers need hysteresis models able to consider the temperature. This paper is an attempt to consider the temperature in an existing model of static hysteresis through its parameters. Variations of some parameters with temperature are issued or build thanks to the literature. At the end, all needed parameters have an analytical law versus temperature. The grain flipping probability (GFP) model is used to reproduce the output of micromagnetic ( $\mu $ -mag) simulations several orders of magnitude faster. In this paper, we compare signals from the $\mu $ -magsimulations and the GFP model with readback from a Seagate hard disk drive (HDD). We validate our models by benchmarking the model output against the HDD readback in terms of magnetic write width, and signal-to-noise ratio and bit error rate as a function of the overshoot triplet parameters. The small-signal stability analysis of power systems concerns the critical modes as well as the modes associated with a physical meaning, e.g., the interarea oscillation modes for weakly connected systems and the modes sensitive to a particular parameter. As the order of the power-system state matrix increases, it becomes more difficult to determine these modes. In this paper, a method is proposed to compute the interarea oscillation modes of large-scale power systems. The deviation in the active power of the transmission section is selected to identify the interarea oscillation modes. Then, the two-sided Jacobi-Davidson method combined with this selection is employed to compute these modes. Participation factors are used to separate the electromechanical oscillation modes. An aggregation method is proposed that transforms the multiple DFIGs into an equivalent DFIG model that retains the major collective dynamic characteristics of a group of DFIGs. It is intended for Electromagnetic Transients Simulation (EMT). The aggregated machine can take into account different speeds and parameters of each of the individual DFIGs and the connecting impedance of individual DFIGs. Starting with a State Variable (SV) model of an individual DFIG, aggregation is carried out recursively, by combining two DFIGs at a time and then reducing the order of the aggregate to match the state variable equations of a single DFIG so that the steady state performances are identical. Validation is carried out by comparing the detailed electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation of the unreduced system with the reduced aggregate system. It is shown that the proposed aggregation method accurately matches the steady state response and also accurately reproduces the dominant transient response of the unreduced system. As the aggregate DFIG has the same number of state variables as a single DFIG, the overall wind farm's order is reduced significantly to increase the modelling and simulation efficiency. Detecting and locating the fault of IGBT rapidly and accurately are the keys to ensuring the security and reliability of the active power filters (APF) system. A fault diagnosis algorithm based on the mathematical model of ac side output voltages for three-phase four-wire three-leg two-level shunt APF is proposed in this paper. According to the different relationships between the APF's ac side output voltages and turn-on duty cycle of the corresponding IGBT under normal condition and fault condition, the fault diagnosis algorithm can detect and locate the open-circuit (OC) faults with no additional hardware or sensors required. All the signals used in this algorithm have already been employed in the APF stem controller. All possible OC fault conditions can be detected and located quickly and reliably by the algorithm. In addition, the algorithm is highly free from the load changes and can be used during the dynamic process of load changes. In this paper, we present the swing-up regrasping problem in which an object is manipulated using a robotic arm around a point pinched by the arm's gripper. The aim of the regrasping is to manipulate the object from an initial angle to regrasp it on a new desired angle relative to the gripper. The pinching point functions as a semiactive joint at which the gripper is able to apply only frictional torques on the object to resist its motion. We address the problem by proposing a novel approach that incorporates an impulse–momentum method with a clipped linear quadratic regulator (cLQR) based controller for stabilization on the desired angle. In particular, a suboptimal cLQR controller is presented to deal with the dissipative semiactive joint. The interaction of these methods with the unique property of the semiactive joint is investigated and analyzed. Simulations on a six degrees of freedom manipulator regrasping a bottle validate the proposed approach. Moreover, a full experiment was conducted on a robotic arm to test the approach and the control of a semiactive joint. The simulations and experiment have proven the feasibility of the method. In this paper, an accurate and fast method is presented for the modeling, analysis, and design of the power noise suppression using embedded planar capacitors in high-speed multilayered printed circuit boards (PCBs). Two main contributions of this paper are: 1) an ideal AC short circuit model is proposed to simplify the stopband analysis and a physics-based formula is derived for accurate stopband estimation and 2) a physics-based equivalent circuit modeling method is introduced for the fast estimation of noise suppression level in complicated multilayered structures. The results are verified by simulation and measurement. Our method changes the analysis of complicated multiple plane pairs into single plane pair, which can greatly simplify the design process of embedded planar capacitors in complicated multilayered PCBs. The Warp code (and its framework of associated tools) was initially developed for particle-in-cell simulations of space-charge-dominated ion beams in accelerators, for heavy-ion-driven inertial fusion energy, and related experiments. It has found a broad range of applications, including nonneutral plasmas in traps, stray electron clouds in accelerators, laser-based acceleration, and the focusing of ion beams produced when short-pulse lasers irradiate foil targets. We summarize novel methods used in Warp, including: time-stepping conducive to diagnosis and particle injection; an interactive Python-Fortran-C structure that enables scripted and interactive user steering of runs; a variety of geometries (3-D $x$ , $y$ , $z$ ; 2-D $r$ , $z$ ; 2-D $x$ , $y$ ); electrostatic and electromagnetic field solvers; a cut-cell representation for internal boundaries; the use of warped coordinates for bent beam lines; adaptive mesh refinement, including a capability for time-dependent space-charge-limited flow from curved surfaces; models for accelerator lattice elements (magnetic or electrostatic quadrupole lenses, accelerating gaps, etc.) at user-selectable levels of detail; models for particle interactions with gas and walls; moment/envelope models that support sophisticated particle loading; a drift-Lorentz mover for rapid tracking through regions of strong and weak magnetic field; a Lorentz-boosted frame formulation with a Lorentz-invariant modification of the Boris mover; an electromagnetic solver with tunable dispersion and stride-based digital filtering; and a pseudospectral electromagnetic solver. Warp has proven useful for a wide range of applications, described very briefly herein. It is available as an open-source code under a BSD license. In this paper, an iterative algorithm is proposed to retrieve the particle-size distributions via Fraunhofer diffraction. A dual integral inversion was proposed in our previous work, the inversion is robust and generates precise particle sizing, if the diffraction pattern can be accurately captured. In real applications, the pattern can only be partially detected, and the inversion fails to reconstruct the size distributions in detail. However, the results of the inversion can be used to produce an initial estimate. Then, a simulated diffraction pattern was generated from the estimated particle sizes. The deviation between the measured pattern and the simulated one was deduced to correct the results of particle sizing. The corrections can be achieved in an iterative approach, and the particle-size distribution was updated subsequently. The iteration stopped once the deviation was below the target value. Both simulation and experiment were conducted to validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. The results demonstrate that the size distribution from the proposed algorithm agrees well with the original phantoms for both noise-free and noise-contaminated data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Generally, the modal degeneration problem existed in the design of ultrasonic motors using composite vibration modes can be overcome by adopting the same-order orthogonal-bending composite vibrations. The conventional excitation and the modified hybrid one of sandwich type orthogonal-bending composite vibrations with the same order are compared and analyzed in this paper. Compared with the conventional one, the modified hybrid excitation favors that two groups of ceramics exciting two orthogonal-bending modes are placed in the optimum excitation position. Moreover, the modified hybrid excitation can achieve larger vibration amplitude than the conventional one, while the amount of the ceramics adopted and the exciting voltages applied are the same. The first-order orthogonal-bending composite vibrations are chosen to analyze the advantage of the modified hybrid excitation. Finite-element method is adopted to compare the amplitudes of the models with the same sizes but different excitations. The prototypes corresponding to two excitations are fabricated and tested to verify the results of the theory and simulation. Interleaved converter legs are typically modulated with individual carriers per leg and phase-shifted pulse width modulation (PS-PWM) as it facilitates current balancing amongst the legs. Phase-disposition PWM (PD-PWM), despite the better harmonic performance, cannot be directly used due to the resulting current imbalance that may damage the converter. This paper addresses the current sharing issue and proposes a sorting algorithm implementation that enables single-carrier PD-PWM technique for interleaved two-level converter legs. An extension of the proposed algorithm through a switching state feedback loop, limiting the average switching frequency, is also developed. In both cases, the output current is of high quality and shared amongst the phase-legs, while the deviation between the phase-leg currents is well regulated. Simulation results demonstrate the general function of method for multiple interleaved legs as well as its current sharing capabilities for high-power applications. In this paper, the diagnosis of soft faults in lossy electric transmission lines is studied through the inverse scattering approach, extending a recently reported study on lossless transmission lines. The considered soft faults are modeled as continuous spatial variations of distributed characteristic parameters of transmission lines. The diagnosis of such faults from reflection and transmission coefficients measured at the ends of a line can be formulated as an inverse problem. The relationship between this inverse problem and the inverse scattering theory has been studied by Jaulent in 1982 through transformations from the telegrapher's equations of transmission lines to Zakharov-Shabat equations. The present paper clarifies and completes the computation of the theoretic scattering data required by the inverse scattering transform from the practically measured engineering scattering data. The inverse scattering method is then applied to numerically simulated lossy transmission lines to confirm the feasibility of the studied approach to soft fault diagnosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For maximizing the power transfer in an inductive power transfer system, the operating frequency of the system is normally designed to be the same as the resonant frequency of the secondary power pick-up. But the load deviation reflected from secondary side to primary side will result in the frequency mismatch issue. Therefore, the contactless load detection technique is significant to ensure the power transfer efficiency and capacity. The emerging technique taking advantages of the amplitude decay rate in a transient process is promising. The robustness and practicability can get enhanced and the complicated steady circuit model is avoided. However, the accuracy for the small resistance application is still a challenge even with sophisticated compensation algorithms. This paper classified the system detectable region through the root locus method. The transient process in different subregions is excavated mathematically. It is revealed that the variation of the system from the second order to fourth order is the key issue for the detection error in the small load resistance application. The analysis brings out a novel automatic contactless load detection method to extend the detection range. Road traffic simulation is a useful tool for studying road traffic and evaluating solutions to traffic problems. Large-scale agent-based road traffic simulation is computationally intensive, which triggers the need for conducting parallel simulation. This paper deals with the synchronization problem in parallel agent-based road traffic simulation to reduce the overall simulation execution time. We aim to reduce synchronization operations by introducing some redundant computation to the simulation. There is a trade-off between the benefit of reduced synchronization operations and the overhead of redundant computation. The challenge is to minimize the total overhead of redundant computation and synchronization. First, to determine the amount of redundant computation, we proposed a way to define extended layers of partitions in the road network. The sizes of extended layers are determined by the behavior of agents and the topology of road networks. Second, due to the dynamic nature of road traffic, a heuristic was proposed to adjust the amount of redundant computation according to traffic conditions during simulation run-time to minimize the overall simulation execution time. The efficiency of the proposed method was investigated in a parallel agent-based road traffic simulator using real-world network and trip data. This paper presents a finite-element-based simulation methodology to improve on multiscale modeling and analysis limitations of power electronics development. The method utilizes homogenization and nonmatching grid concepts to offer a high degree of flexibility and reduce computational effort. The applied homogenization method provides effective material properties to realize full-chip modeling performance without the need to model geometric details. The concept of nonmatching grids allows the inclusion of a subregion with substantially finer mesh than its surrounding regions. This allows the flexible integration of micrometer scale geometries with a high degree of detail within the full-chip model. Both concepts are thoroughly introduced and an application to a state-of-the-art power electronics semiconductor technology is presented. This paper focuses on electrothermal interaction and is experimentally verified on a dedicated test structure. The presented results provide electrothermal insights in current power electronic technologies and emphasize their potential to further improve the robustness and reliability of next generation technologies. A simplified pulse width modulation (PWM) strategy for a neutral-point-clamped three-level converter with unbalanced dc links is proposed in this paper to achieve high-quality line-to-line output voltages and to maximize the linear modulation range. The simplified strategy takes the direct output voltage modulation by calculating the special solutions of the voltage–second balance equations without detecting the position of the reference vector in the asymmetrical and complicated space voltage vector diagrams to reduce the calculation time. A novel solution based on the state transition is proposed to extend the maximum linear modulation index to 1.15. Furthermore, the asymmetric control of the split dc link by the proposed PWM is implemented by adjusting the special solutions. The difference between the conventional space vector PWM and the proposed strategy is conducted to illustrate the advantages of the simplified strategy. In this paper, we investigate the outage behavior of a dual-hop opportunistic decode-and-forward (DF) relay system with cochannel interference (CCI) at both the relay and the destination. The source–relay and relay–destination channels and the interferers' channels at both the relay and the destination nodes are assumed to follow Nakagami-m distribution. Exact closed-form expressions for the outage probability for both independent nonidentically distributed (i.n.d.) and independent identically distributed (i.i.d.) cases of interferers' channels are derived in this paper. Furthermore, the system behavior at high SNR values is studied via deriving the asymptotic outage probability, and hence, the diversity order and the coding gain are characterized. Our results show that the cochannel interferers do not reduce the diversity gain of the system; instead, they degrade the outage performance by affecting the coding gain of the system. Interaction between doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) Type 3 wind generators and series-compensated networks can lead to subsynchronous resonance (SSR) oscillations—a phenomenon observed in the real world. In this paper, impedance-based Nyquist stability criterion is applied to analyze the SSR phenomena. Impedance models of a DFIG along with its rotor-side converter (RSC) and grid-side converter, and a series-compensated network are derived in terms of space vectors. The DFIG impedance and the network impedance are analyzed to show the impact of wind speed, compensation level, and RSC current controller gain on SSR stability. Nyquist maps are also used to demonstrate the impact on SSR stability. Simulation studies are carried out to show SSR controller interaction. This paper successfully demonstrates that the interaction between the electric network and the converter controller is a leading cause of the SSR phenomena recently observed in wind generation grid integration. Applying the Jiles-Atherton (JA) model to simulate the dynamics of power electronics circuit is a challenge but very attractive since it is possible to carry out continuous simulation with only several input parameters. Although other methods such as the Preisach-model can result in approximate waveforms for such applications, it is still a far distance to reach exact ones to suit chaos and other high accuracy-requiring researches. In this paper, the JA model has been successfully applied to model the dynamics of resonant inverter for driving a nonlinear load: a fluorescent lamp. The circuit is driven by a high frequency square wave voltage source. A semi-theoretical fluorescent lamp model developed from HID lamp model is adopted in the modeling. This paper presents a new solution method that combines state-space and nodal analysis for the simulation of electrical systems. The presented flexible clustering of state-space-described electrical subsystems into a nodal method offers several advantages for the efficient solution of switched networks, nonlinear functions, and for interfacing with nodal model equations. This paper extends the concept of discrete companion branch equivalent of the nodal approach to state-space described systems and enables natural coupling between them. This paper deals with the scale modeling method to investigate the overheat failure mechanism and the processes of bus contacts in gas-insulated switchgears (GIS). Mathematical models of the physical phenomenon in the overheat failure process are summarized to derive the coupled eddy current-fluid-heat field scaling relationships. In pursuit of better availability of the model, the scaling relationships are then simplified and a partial scale model is further designed with the dimension parameters, physical parameters, and boundary conditions presented. Temperature distributions and current densities of the scale model are compared with those of the prototype to verify the effectiveness of the scale model by 3-D finite-element method. It is well known that space-time block codes (STBCs) obtained from orthogonal designs (ODs) are single-symbol decodable (SSD) and from quasi-orthogonal designs (QODs) are double-symbol decodable (DSD). However, there are SSD codes that are not obtainable from ODs and DSD codes that are not obtainable from QODs. In this paper, a method of constructing g-symbol decodable (g-SD) STBCs using representations of Clifford algebras are presented which when specialized to g = 1, 2 gives SSD and DSD codes, respectively. For the number of transmit antennas 2a the rate (in complex symbols per channel use) of the g-SD codes presented in this paper is a+1-g/2a-g. The maximum rate of the DSD STBCs from QODs reported in the literature is a/2a-1 which is smaller than the rate of the DSD codes of this paper, for 2a transmit antennas. In particular, the reported DSD codes for 8 and 16 transmit antennas offer rates 1 and 3/4, respectively, whereas the known STBCs from QODs offer only 3/4 and 1/2, respectively. The construction of this paper is applicable for any number of transmit antennas. The diversity sum and diversity product of the new DSD codes are studied. It is shown that the diversity sum is larger than that of all known QODs and hence the new codes perform better than the comparable QODs at low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) for identical spectral efficiency. Due to the long simulation time of the reference input set, computer architects often use reduced time simulation techniques to shorten the simulation time. However, what has not yet been thoroughly evaluated is the accuracy of these techniques relative to the reference input set and with respect to each other. To rectify this deficiency, this paper uses three methods to characterize reduced input set, truncated execution, and sampling-based simulation techniques while also examining their speed versus accuracy trade-off and configuration dependence. Our results show that the three sampling-based techniques, SimPoint, SMARTS, and random sampling, have the best accuracy, the best speed versus accuracy trade-off, and the least configuration dependence. On the other hand, the reduced input set and truncated execution simulation techniques had generally poor accuracy, were not significantly faster than the sampling-based techniques, and were severely configuration dependent.
