Edge federated learning (FL) is an emerging paradigm that trains a global parametric model from distributed datasets based on wireless communications. This paper proposes a unit-modulus over-the-air computation (UMAirComp) framework to facilitate efficient edge federated learning, which simultaneously uploads local model parameters and updates global model parameters via analog beamforming. The proposed framework avoids sophisticated baseband signal processing, leading to low communication delays and implementation costs. Training loss bounds of UMAirComp FL systems are derived and two low-complexity large-scale optimization algorithms, termed penalty alternating minimization (PAM) and accelerated gradient projection (AGP), are proposed to minimize the nonconvex nonsmooth loss bound. Simulation results show that the proposed UMAirComp framework with PAM algorithm achieves a smaller mean square error of model parameters’ estimation, training loss, and test error compared with other benchmark schemes. Moreover, the proposed UMAirComp framework with AGP algorithm achieves satisfactory performance while reduces the computational complexity by orders of magnitude compared with existing optimization algorithms. Finally, we demonstrate the implementation of UMAirComp in a vehicle-to-everything autonomous driving simulation platform. It is found that autonomous driving tasks are more sensitive to model parameter errors than other tasks since the neural networks for autonomous driving contain sparser model parameters. In this paper, an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is deployed to assist the terahertz (THz) communications. The sum-rate of user equipments (UEs) is maximized while guaranteeing the rate requirement of each UE. A block coordinate searching (BCS) algorithm is proposed to jointly optimize the IRS’s coordinates, phase shifts, THz sub-bands allocation and power control. Specifically, the relaxation with penalties based (RPB) algorithm is developed to obtain feasible coordinates of the IRS and guarantee the monotonicity of objective value. In addition, the IRS phase shifts are formulated as closed-form expressions with introduced pricing factors. In this paper, we consider a computation offloading problem in a three-tier network consisting of multiple mobile users (MUs), multiple edge clouds, and a central cloud. On this basis, we formulate a system Energy Time Cost ($ETC$) minimization problem by jointly optimizing the resource allocation, mobile-edge matching decision, and offloading decision. Due to the difficulty of directly solving the formulated problem, we decompose it and propose two offloading algorithms, namely Gale-Shapley based Minimum/Sequential Offloading Algorithm (GS-MOA/GS-SOA), to optimize offloading decisions by minimizing the system $ETC$ , in which the mobile-edge matching strategies based on the proposed Gale-Shapley based Mobile-Edge mAtching aLgorithm (GS-MEAL) and resource allocations are optimized iteratively. This paper considers optimal joint time, frequency, and power allocation for energy-efficient device-to-device (D2D) communications in an overlay cellular network, where multiple D2D transmitters communicate with their corresponding D2D receivers while utilizing the energy harvested from a cellular base station (BS). Due to channel estimation error and feedback delays, the channel state information (CSI) available at the transmitters is usually imperfect, which can significantly deteriorate the energy efficiency (EE) of the considered system. To mitigate the impact of imperfect CSI, we formulate a non-convex robust optimization problem for the maximization of the EE (in bits/Joule) of the system while ensuring quality of service (QoS) requirements on the minimum data rata and the minimum amount of harvested energy for cellular and D2D users, respectively. We reveal that the optimal energy-efficient D2D transmission should exhaust all the harvested energy of each D2D transmitter. Exploiting this fact, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm for obtaining the optimal solution. To strike a balance between performance and computational complexity, we further propose a low-complexity suboptimal algorithm. Simulation results show that compared with several baseline schemes, both the proposed optimal and suboptimal algorithms can significantly improve the EE of wireless-powered D2D communications under imperfect CSI. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a promising new paradigm to achieve high spectral and energy efficiency for future wireless networks by reconfiguring the wireless signal propagation via passive reflection. To reap the promising gains of IRS, channel state information (CSI) is essential, whereas channel estimation errors are inevitable in practice due to limited channel training resources. In this paper, in order to optimize the performance of IRS-aided multiuser communications with imperfect CSI, we propose to jointly design the active transmit precoding at the access point (AP) and passive reflection coefficients of the IRS, each consisting of not only the conventional phase shift and also the newly exploited amplitude variation. First, the achievable rate of each user is derived assuming a practical IRS channel estimation method, which shows that the interference due to CSI errors is intricately related to the AP transmit precoders, the channel training power and the IRS reflection coefficients during both channel training and data transmission. Next, for the single-user case, by combining the benefits of the penalty method, Dinkelbach method and block successive upper-bound minimization (BSUM) method, a new penalized Dinkelbach-BSUM algorithm is proposed to optimize the IRS reflection coefficients for maximizing the achievable data transmission rate subjected to CSI errors; while for the multiuser case, a new penalty dual decomposition (PDD)-based algorithm is proposed to maximize the users’ weighted sum-rate. Finally, simulation results are presented to validate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms as compared to benchmark schemes. Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) have been recently considered as an energy-efficient solution for future wireless networks due to their fast and low-power configuration, which has increased potential in enabling massive connectivity and low-latency communications. Accurate and low-overhead channel estimation in RIS-based systems is one of the most critical challenges due to the usually large number of RIS unit elements and their distinctive hardware constraints. In this paper, we focus on the uplink of a RIS-empowered multi-user Multiple Input Single Output (MISO) uplink communication systems and propose a channel estimation framework based on the parallel factor decomposition to unfold the resulting cascaded channel model. We present two iterative estimation algorithms for the channels between the base station and RIS, as well as the channels between RIS and users. One is based on alternating least squares (ALS), while the other uses vector approximate message passing to iteratively reconstruct two unknown channels from the estimated vectors. To theoretically assess the performance of the ALS-based algorithm, we derived its estimation Cramér-Rao Bound (CRB). We also discuss the downlink achievable sum rate computation with estimated channels and different precoding schemes for the base station. Our extensive simulation results show that our algorithms outperform benchmark schemes and that the ALS technique achieves the CRB. It is also demonstrated that the sum rate using the estimated channels always reach that of perfect channels under various settings, thus, verifying the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed estimation algorithms. In this paper, we study the beam synthesis and management methods for the phased antenna array-based wireless communications systems, e.g., 5 G mmWave communications. First, we propose a novel on-off beam synthesis method that can synthesize any given on-off beam pattern. The proposed method maximizes the beam power towards a given set of on-directions while suppressing the power towards all off-directions. Second, by using a set of beams synthesized by the proposed on-off beam synthesis method, we design a non-interactive hierarchical beam management algorithm that can greatly reduce the radio resource usage, feedback overhead, and the latency of the beam discovery, compared to the exhaustive beam search algorithms. Since the proposed beam management algorithm is non-interactive, it can be applied to the initial access as well as the beam tracking, and is especially useful for supporting a massive number of devices. Being an effective non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique, sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is promising for future wireless communication. Compared with orthogonal techniques, SCMA enjoys higher overloading tolerance and lower complexity because of its sparsity. In this paper, based on deterministic message passing algorithm (DMPA), algorithmic simplifications such as domain changing and probability approximation are applied for SCMA decoding. Early termination, adaptive decoding, and initial noise reduction are also employed for faster convergence and better performance. Numerical results show that the proposed optimizations benefit both decoding complexity and speed. Furthermore, efficient hardware architectures based on folding and retiming are proposed. Hardware non-idealities are among the main performance restrictions for upcoming wireless communication systems. Asymmetric hardware distortions (HWD) happen when the impairments of the I/Q branches are correlated or imbalanced, which in turn generate improper additive interference at the receiver side. When the interference is improper, as well as in other interference-limited scenarios, improper Gaussian signaling (IGS) has been shown to provide rate and/or power efficiency benefits. In this paper, we investigate the rate benefits of IGS in a two-user interference channel (IC) with additive asymmetric HWD when interference is treated as noise. We propose two iterative algorithms to optimize the parameters of the improper transmit signals. We first rewrite the rate region as an pseudo-signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (PSINR) region and employ majorization minimization and fractional programming to find a suboptimal solution for the achievable user rates. Then, we propose a simplified algorithm based on a separate optimization of the powers and complementary variances of the users, which exhibits lower computational complexity. We show that IGS can improve the performance of the two-user IC with additive HWD. Visible light communication (VLC) is seen as a supplement for fifth-generation (5G) wireless communication in short-range high data rate communication applications. A reliable VLC system relies on an accurate estimate of the position and orientation of the receiver, which corresponds to the six-dimensional positioning problem mentioned in. In this paper, we investigate the simultaneous position and orientation estimation (SPO) problem using received signal strength (RSS), for a visible light system containing multiple LEDs and multiple photodiodes (PDs) (MLMP). Although in general, the position and orientation of the receiver can be represented by a vector and a rotation matrix, respectively, the constraints imposed by the rotation matrix make the numerical optimization in the estimation process cumbersome, e.g, the commonly used constrained optimization method is often very complex and non-robust. Therefore, in this paper, we design two SPO algorithms using the principle of optimization on manifolds, which alleviates the constraints from the rotation matrix. In addition, we propose an initialization algorithm, based on the direct linear transformation (DLT) principle, to obtain an initial estimate in closed-form for the iterative algorithms. To evaluate the performance of the proposed RSS-based SPO algorithms, we derive the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB). In particular, the orientation error component of the CRB corresponds to the intrinsic CRB or the CRB on manifolds, which measures the error in the estimated rotation matrix in a physically meaningful way. Finally, computer simulations show an asymptotic tightness between the performance of the proposed algorithms and the theoretical lower bound, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed solutions. The C-RAN architecture has been prevailing in mobile networks for 5G and beyond. Along with the significant increase in the amount of mobile data, network operators must consider the spatio-temporal pattern of traffi c demand due to human mobility and lifestyles. It has been an important problem to efficiently deploy mobile networks avoiding the underutilization of cell capacities in off -peak times. To address this problem, in this paper we propose a concept of an adaptive C-RAN architecture toward the beyond 5G era. The proposed architecture enables flexible reconfi guration of the radio unit (RU) states and movable DU locations considering the changes in demand distribution. The DUs and RUs compose wireless relay fronthaul networks to forward fronthaul streams satisfying the strict latency requirements. This paper also proposes the joint scheduling algorithm to activate RUs, relocate DUs, and determine forwarding paths of fronthaul streams. It was confi rmed with computer simulations that mobile networks can be efficiently reconstructed with the proposed idea by activating/deactivating RUs and relocating/ migrating DUs. Wireless network communication has developed rapidly in recent years, especially in the field of Internet of vehicles (IoV). However, due to the limitations of traditional network architecture, resource scheduling in wireless network environment is still facing great challenges. We focus on the urgent need of users for bandwidth resources in the IoV scenario under virtual network environment. This paper proposes a bandwidth aware multi domain virtual network embedding (BA-VNE) algorithm. The algorithm is mainly aimed at the problem that users need a lot of bandwidth in wireless communication mode, and solves the problem of bandwidth resource allocation from the perspective of virtual network embedding (VNE). In order to improve the performance of the algorithm, we introduce particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to optimize the performance of the algorithm. In order to verify the effectiveness of the algorithm, we have carried out simulation experiments from link bandwidth, mapping cost and virtual network request (VNR) acceptance rate. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are capable of serving as flying base stations (BSs) for supporting data collection, machine learning (ML) model training, and wireless communications. However, due to the privacy concerns of devices and limited computation or communication resource of UAVs, it is impractical to send raw data of devices to UAV servers for model training. Moreover, due to the dynamic channel condition and heterogeneous computing capacity of devices in UAV-enabled networks, the reliability and efficiency of data sharing require to be further improved. In this paper, we develop an asynchronous federated learning (AFL) framework for multi-UAV-enabled networks, which can provide asynchronous distributed computing by enabling model training locally without transmitting raw sensitive data to UAV servers. The device selection strategy is also introduced into the AFL framework to keep the low-quality devices from affecting the learning efficiency and accuracy. Moreover, we propose an asynchronous advantage actor-critic (A3C) based joint device selection, UAVs placement, and resource management algorithm to enhance the federated convergence speed and accuracy. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed framework and algorithm achieve higher learning accuracy and faster federated execution time compared to other existing solutions. The 802.11ac is a significant landmark in wireless communications, as it pushes towards new rate limits by utilizing downlink multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) beamforming to transmit data to various locations simultaneously. However, successful beamforming relies on intelligent user selection which requires, in turn, extensive overhead of channel calibration between the AP and each of the candidate users. The large overhead involved in the user selection procedure overwhelms the multiuser gain and hinders the utilization of multiuser MIMO. The phenomenon is even more acute when APs handle large groups of mobile users, which frequently associate and disconnect, making the process of acquiring channel state from all users and selecting the appropriate group even harder. Thus, the subtle relation between the achievable rate of a scheduling algorithm and the overhead it requires is significant for the 802.11ac performance analysis. In this paper, we provide a rigorous analysis of distributed algorithms that schedule a group of users for the downlink. In particular, we accommodate common scheduling methods for the 802.11ac protocol and analyze both their achievable rate and their calibration process overhead. In this paper, we develop a knowledge-assisted deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm to design wireless schedulers in the fifth-generation (5G) cellular networks with time-sensitive traffic. Since the scheduling policy is a deterministic mapping from channel and queue states to scheduling actions, it can be optimized by using deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG). We show that a straightforward implementation of DDPG converges slowly, has a poor quality-of-service (QoS) performance, and cannot be implemented in real-world 5G systems, which are non-stationary in general. To address these issues, we propose a theoretical DRL framework, where theoretical models from wireless communications are used to formulate a Markov decision process in DRL. To reduce the convergence time and improve the QoS of each user, we design a knowledge-assisted DDPG (K-DDPG) that exploits expert knowledge of the scheduler design problem, such as the knowledge of the QoS, the target scheduling policy, and the importance of each training sample, determined by the approximation error of the value function and the number of packet losses. Furthermore, we develop an architecture for online training and inference, where K-DDPG initializes the scheduler off-line and then fine-tunes the scheduler online to handle the mismatch between off-line simulations and non-stationary real-world systems. Simulation results show that our approach reduces the convergence time of DDPG significantly and achieves better QoS than existing schedulers (reducing 30% ~ 50% packet losses). Experimental results show that with off-line initialization, our approach achieves better initial QoS than random initialization and the online fine-tuning converges in few minutes. Deep neural networks (DNNs) have been widely applied for classification tasks in wireless communications such as link scheduling, user association and base station (BS) muting. When training a DNN using datasets with highly-skewed class distribution where most data belong to a few majority classes, learning performance for minority classes will degrade since the imbalanced data forces the training process to be biased towards the majority classes. In many wireless problems, multiple decisions for classification are made jointly, say deciding which BSs in a network should be muted to avoid interference. In this paper, we employ DNN to learn an optimal predictive interference coordination policy, and strive to avoid biased learning in such a multi-label multi-class classification problem. The major contribution is proposing a training method to encourage fairness among classes by minimizing the maximal cost of decisions among classes, which is converted into a problem to optimize the weighting factors on the training cost of each class. We provide a gradient descent algorithm to optimize the weighting factors and the model parameters of the DNN by alternative updates. Simulation results show that the training method can improve the learning performance for the minority class and can achieve higher network utility than existing training methods. Dynamic network architectures (DNAs) have been developed under the assumption that some terminals can be converted into temporary access points (APs) anytime when connected to the Internet. In this paper, we consider the problem of assigning a group of users to a set of potential APs with the aim to maximize the downlink system throughput of DNA networks, subject to total transmit power and users’ quality of service (QoS) constraints. In our first method, we relax the integer optimization variables to be continuous. The resulting non-convex continuous optimization problem is solved using successive convex approximation framework to arrive at a sequence of second-order cone programs (SOCPs). In the next method, the selection process is viewed as finding a sparsity constrained solution to our problem of sum rate maximization. It is demonstrated in numerical results that while the first approach has better data rates for dense networks, the sparsity oriented method has a superior speed of convergence. Moreover, for the scenarios considered, in addition to comprehensively outperforming some well-known approaches, our algorithms yield data rates close to those obtained by branch and bound method. Recently, the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), benefited from the breakthrough on the fabrication of programmable meta-material, has been speculated as one of the key enabling technologies for the future six generation (6G) wireless communication systems scaled up beyond massive multiple input multiple output (Massive-MIMO) technology to achieve smart radio environments. Employed as reflecting arrays, RIS is able to assist MIMO transmissions without the need of radio frequency chains resulting in considerable reduction in power consumption. In this paper, we investigate the joint design of transmit beamforming matrix at the base station and the phase shift matrix at the RIS, by leveraging recent advances in deep reinforcement learning (DRL). We first develop a DRL based algorithm, in which the joint design is obtained through trial-and-error interactions with the environment by observing predefined rewards, in the context of continuous state and action. Unlike the most reported works utilizing the alternating optimization techniques to alternatively obtain the transmit beamforming and phase shifts, the proposed DRL based algorithm obtains the joint design simultaneously as the output of the DRL neural network. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is not only able to learn from the environment and gradually improve its behavior, but also obtains the comparable performance compared with two state-of-the-art benchmarks. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a promising new technology for achieving both spectrum and energy efficient wireless communication systems in the future. However, existing works on IRS mainly consider frequency-flat channels and assume perfect knowledge of channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter. Motivated by the above, in this paper we study an IRS-enhanced orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system under frequency-selective channels and propose a practical transmission protocol with channel estimation. First, to reduce the overhead in channel training as well as exploit the channel spatial correlation, we propose a novel IRS elements grouping method, where each group consists of a set of adjacent IRS elements that share a common reflection coefficient. Based on this method, we propose a practical transmission protocol where only the combined channel of each group needs to be estimated, thus substantially reducing the training overhead. Next, with any given grouping and estimated CSI, we formulate the problem to maximize the achievable rate by jointly optimizing the transmit power allocation and the IRS passive array reflection coefficients. Although the formulated problem is non-convex and thus difficult to solve, we propose an efficient algorithm to obtain a high-quality suboptimal solution for it, by alternately optimizing the power allocation and the passive array coefficients in an iterative manner, along with a customized method for the initialization. Simulation results show that the proposed design significantly improves the OFDM link rate performance as compared to the case without using IRS. Moreover, it is shown that there exists an optimal size for IRS elements grouping which achieves the maximum achievable rate due to the practical trade-off between the training overhead and IRS passive beamforming flexibility. This paper studies the information-energy ($\mathrm{I}$ - $\mathrm{E}$) region for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) networks in mobility scenarios, where a moving transmitter simultaneously transmits information and power to a fixed receiver, and the receiver adopts power splitting (PS) receiving architecture. In order to characterize the tradeoff between the received information and harvested energy, the $\mathrm{I}$ - $\mathrm{E}$ region is defined, and corresponding optimization problems are formulated to explore the system $\mathrm{I}$ - $\mathrm{E}$ regions by jointly optimizing the transmit power at the transmitter and the PS ratio at the receiver with three popular energy harvesting (EH) models, i.e., traditional linear EH model, the logistic nonlinear EH model and the piecewise nonlinear EH model. Particularly, to efficiently solve the nonconvex optimization problem with the logistic nonlinear EH model, a successive convex approximate (SCA)-based algorithm is proposed, which is able to characterize the lower bound of the $\mathrm{I}$ - $\mathrm{E}$ with low complexity. To solve the optimization problems with the linear and piecewise EH models, as they are convex, some closed and semi-closed solutions are derived by using Lagrange dual method and KKT conditions. Numerical results show that compared with the $\mathrm{I}$ - $\mathrm{E}$ regions under the linear and piecewise EH models, that under the logistic nonlinear EH model is smaller due to the limitations of practical EH circuit features. Moreover, with a fixed moving speed, when the transmit power is relatively large, the logistic nonlinear EH model can be replaced with the piecewise one due to the relatively small gap between their achieved $\mathrm{I}$ - $\mathrm{E}$ regions. Opportunistic beamforming (OBF) is an attractive research topic in wireless communications, which can provide multi-user diversity with a low complexity. The conventional OBF technique requires a large number of waiting users, and cannot simultaneously support multiple users. In order to solve the mentioned problem, this paper proposes a downlink multi-user multi-weight opportunistic beamforming non-orthogonal multiple access (MW-OBF-NOMA) system. An objective function is formulated to maximize the sum spectrum efficiency (SE) of the proposed system, however, it is a non-convex issue and intractable to derive an optimal solution. To solve this non-convex issue, we divide it into two sub-optimal issues and solve them one-by-one. Based on the solutions of the two sub-optimal issues, a joint iterative resource allocation algorithm is presented. Moreover, we discuss the influences of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) estimation, and deduce a closed-form expression of bit error ratio (BER). In this paper, we study the resource allocation problem for downlink multicarrier non-orthogonal multiple access systems with short-packet communications (MC-NOMA-SPC). In contrast to long-packet communications in conventional wireless systems, SPC suffers from a transmission rate degradation and an unavoidable decoding error rate. Thus conventional resource allocation based on the Shannon capacity assuming infinite blocklength is no longer optimal. In this paper, we propose to use the effective-throughput as the performance metric to evaluate the tradeoff between the transmission rate and the decoding error rate. Building on that, we jointly optimize the subcarrier assignment, transmission power allocation, and transmission rate adaptation of each user to maximize the total weighted effective-throughput subject to transmission reliability and various practical constraints. Since the formulated problem belongs to a non-convex mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem, we develop an efficient algorithm based on the dynamic programming (DP) recursion framework to obtain its optimal solutions. We further propose a low-complexity algorithm based on the principles of block coordinate descent (BCD) and concave-convex procedure (CCCP). Finally, the simulation results show that the proposed low-complexity algorithm can achieve similar performance as that of the optimal solution and outperform the other baseline schemes significantly. In this paper, an initial attempt to exploit the benefits of machine learning in solving relay selection for dualhop networks has been made. From data-driven perspective, we convert relay selection to multiclass-classification problem and propose a decision-tree-based selection scheme. Input features are generated by binary quantization to the equivalent channel state information of each relay, so that the dependence of relay selection on maximization algorithm is removed. To optimize quantization parameter, we derive and maximize two splitting criteria—information gain and Gini index. Sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is one type of non-orthogonal multiple access techniques for the fifth-generation wireless communication networks. Existing multiuser detection algorithms for SCMA uplink systems are based on the assumption that signals are in synchronization. However, asynchrony cannot be neglected due to the propagation delays in practical environments. In this paper, we present three detection algorithms for uplink asynchronous SCMA systems, namely belief propagation message passing algorithm, belief propagation with equal gain combining message passing algorithm, and partial phase-coherent algorithms. Simulation results show that our proposed asynchronous detection algorithms are able to offer descent bit error rate performances, with only a small performances loss compared to the synchronous case. The broadcast nature of wireless communications makes transmission susceptible to eavesdropping. Recently, physical-layer security has been extensively studied to secure the wireless transmissions, but the security is severely compromised when the eavesdropper has the superiority in the channel quality. Toward this issue, we in this paper propose a joint ARQ and network coding method exploiting the characteristics of both the physical layer and the link layer. Specifically, we relate the message to be transmitted in the current slot with the successfully decoded messages in previous slots, where the ARQ is employed at the legitimate side to guarantee the successful transmission and decoding. Once one or more received messages fail to be decoded at the eavesdropper, it further prevents the eavesdropper from decoding the transmissions in later slots and thus the message transmitted currently and later is secured at the legitimate side. Moreover, for the more disadvantageous case that the eavesdropper is geographically closer to the transmitter, we further propose a destination-aided network coding scheme, which secures private information no matter where the eavesdropper is. We present a framework for random access that is based on three elements: physical-layer network coding (PLNC), signature codes, and tree splitting. In presence of a collision, physical-layer network coding enables the receiver to decode, i.e., compute, the sum of the packets that were transmitted by the individual users. For each user, the packet consists of the user’s signature, as well as the data that the user wants to communicate. As long as no more than $K$ users collide, their identities can be recovered from the sum of their signatures. This framework for creating and transmitting packets can be used as a fundamental building block in random access algorithms, since it helps to deal efficiently with the uncertainty of the set of contending terminals. In this paper, we show how to apply the framework in conjunction with a tree-splitting algorithm, which is required to deal with the case that more than $K$ users collide. We demonstrate that our approach achieves throughput that tends to 1 rapidly as $K$ increases. We also present results on net data-rate of the system, showing the impact of the overheads of the constituent elements of the proposed protocol. We compare the performance of our scheme with an upper bound that is obtained under the assumption that the active users are a priori known. Also, we consider an upper bound on the net data-rate for any PLNC-based strategy in which one linear equation per slot is decoded. We show that already at modest packet lengths, the net data-rate of our scheme becomes close to the second upper bound, i.e., the overhead of the contention resolution algorithm and the signature codes vanishes. In this paper, we design a robust resource allocation algorithm for a wireless-powered communication network (WPCN) taking into account residual hardware impairments (HWIs) at the transceivers, the imperfectness of the channel state information, and the non-linearity of practical radio frequency energy harvesting circuits. In order to ensure power-efficient secure communication, physical layer security techniques are exploited to deliberately degrade the channel quality of a multiple-antenna eavesdropper. The resource allocation algorithm design is formulated as a non-convex optimization problem for minimization of the total power consumption in the network, while guaranteeing the quality of service of the information receivers in terms of secrecy rate. The globally optimal solution of the optimization problem is obtained via a 2-D search and semidefinite programming relaxation. To strike a balance between computational complexity and system performance, a low-complexity iterative suboptimal resource allocation algorithm is also proposed. Numerical results demonstrate that both the proposed optimal and suboptimal schemes can significantly reduce the total system power consumption required for guaranteeing secure communication, and unveil the impact of HWIs on the system performance: 1) residual HWIs create a system performance bottleneck in WPCN in the high transmit/receive power regimes; 2) increasing the number of transmit antennas can effectively reduce the power consumption of wireless power transfer and alleviate the performance degradation due to residual HWIs; and 3) imperfect CSI exacerbates the impact of residual HWIs, which increases the power consumption of both wireless power and wireless information transfer. This paper presents a technique capable to ameliorating the impairment caused by radio channel multipath, in the estimation of the wireless communications direction of arrival (DoA). This feature is enabled by a space division multiple access approach supported by a DoA technique based on the combination of the estimates achieved at both 2.45 and 5.2 GHz. The DoA estimation relies on a comparison between the real-time received signal strength indicator and the predicted signal level distribution, which can be estimated and stored without the need of lengthy offline measurement. The experimental setup adopted for the technique validation involves an active interferer, by which arbitrary multipath levels can be implemented. An equivalent reflection coefficient signal-to-interference ratio is defined as the ratio of the unperturbed signal and the induced coherent isofrequency interferer signal, compatible with the two-ray model of the multipath impairment. The proposed technique exploits a dual-band frequency planning, and because of the combined use of the data at the two frequencies, a mean error of 2.6° is observed within a domain ranging from 0.5 to 4 m, for the entire 360° angle in the reference anechoic scenario. The 90th percentile of the cumulative error distribution is 5.4°. In the presence of a strong coherent interferer, compatible with a total reflection from the walls, the mean error is 4.9°, while the 90th percentile of the cumulative error distribution is 10.5°. In the presence of the strongest coherent interferer signal available, which is more severe than the worst case of total reflection, the mean error is 7.1°, while the 90th percentile of the cumulative error distribution is 15.1°. Opportunistic routing has been extensively studied and utilized in delay/disruption-tolerant networks. The extensive use of nodes' local information, e.g., the distance to the destination or the contact frequency with the destination, in such routing schemes can cause severe security and privacy problems. Existing solutions of anonymous routing can introduce undesired overhead and fail to provide the confidentiality of the routing metric. In this paper, we propose an advanced framework for opportunistic routing schemes, providing the following properties: confidentiality of the nodes' routing metric, anonymous authentication, and efficient key agreement for pairwise communication. The pervasiveness of GPS-enabled devices and wireless communication technologies results in massive trajectory data, incurring expensive cost for storage, transmission, and query processing. To relieve this problem, in this paper we propose a novel framework for compressing trajectory data, REST (Reference-based Spatio-temporal trajectory compression), by which a raw trajectory is represented by concatenation of a series of historical (sub-)trajectories (called reference trajectories) that form the compressed trajectory within a given spatio-temporal deviation threshold. In order to construct a reference trajectory set that can most benefit the subsequent compression, we propose three kinds of techniques to select reference trajectories wisely from a large dataset such that the resulting reference set is more compact yet covering most footprints of trajectories in the area of interest. To address the computational issue caused by the large number of combinations of reference trajectories that may exist for resembling a given trajectory, we propose efficient greedy algorithms that run in the blink of an eye and dynamic programming algorithms that can achieve the optimal compression ratio. Compared to existing work on trajectory compression, our framework has few assumptions about data such as moving within a road network or moving with constant direction and speed, and better compression performance with fairly small spatio-temporal loss. In addition, by indexing the reference trajectories directly with an in-memory R-tree and building connections to the raw trajectories with inverted index, we develop an extremely efficient algorithm that can answer spatio-temporal range queries over trajectories in their compressed form. Extensive experiments on a real taxi trajectory dataset demonstrate the superiority of our framework over existing representative approaches in terms of both compression ratio and efficiency. The multi-UAV network is promising to extend conventional networks by providing broader coverage, and better reliability. Nevertheless, the broadcast nature of wireless signals, and the broader coverage expose multi-UAV communications to the threats of passive eavesdroppers. Recent studies mainly focus on securing a single legitimate link, or communications between a UAV, and multiple ground users in one/two-UAV-aided networks, while the physical layer secrecy analysis for hierarchical multi-UAV networks is underexplored. In this paper, we investigate a general two-tier UAV network consisting of multiple UAV transmitters (UTs), and multiple UAV receivers (URs) in the presence of multiple UAV eavesdroppers (UEs). To protect all legitimate UT-UR links against UEs at the physical layer, we design a two-stage framework consisting of a UT-UR association stage, and a cooperative transmission stage. Specifically, we formulate the secure transmission problem into a many-to-one matching game followed by an overlapping coalition formation (OCF) game, taking into account the limited capabilities, and the throughput requirements of URs, as well as the transmission power constraints of UTs. A matching algorithm, and an OCF algorithm are proposed to solve these two sequential games whose convergences, and stabilities are guaranteed theoretically. Next-generation wireless communications are expected to provide reliable high-rate connectivity. The recent concept of fog-enabled architecture comes to rescue by invoking a substantial amount of data storage close to end-user devices for meeting these challenges. Thus, caching popular contents at heterogeneous devices, e.g., fog nodes (FNs) or fog access points (FAPs), constitutes a promising technique of reducing both the traffic and the energy consumption of the backhaul links. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an energy-efficient caching and node association algorithm for cache-aided fog networks. First, we solve the problem of energy-efficient content caching and delivery in the FNs/FAPs in conjunction with a fixed node association strategy, where the FNs communicate either with other FNs by node-to-node (N2N) communications or with the FAPs in their proximity. In both caching scenarios, we investigate the relationship between the caching probability of the file and the energy-efficient content delivery by formulating the associated energy efficiency (EE) optimization problem under caching memory constraints. Then, we derive a joint modulation mode allocation strategy and caching policy for each content caching node and conceive a joint node association and caching algorithm for maximizing the EE. In this paper, we present an in-depth study to characterize the surprisingly notable systemic impacts of low-pass filter (LPF) design, which is a small yet indispensable component used for shaping spectrum and rejecting interference. Using a bottom-up approach, we examine how signal-level distortions caused by the trade-off of LPF design propagate to the upper-layers of wireless communication, reshaping bit error patterns and degrading link performance of today’s 802.11 systems. With the development of virtual reality (VR) technology, the future of VR systems is evolving from single-user wired connections to multi-user wireless connections. However, wireless online rendering and transmission incur extra processing and transmission latency, as well as higher bandwidth requirements. To meet the requirements of wireless VR applications and enhance the quality of the VR user experience, this paper designs a view synthesis-based 360° VR caching system over Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN), where both mobile edge computing (MEC) and hierarchical caching are supported. In the system, an MEC-Cache Server is deployed in the pooled Base band Units (BBU pool) and used for view synthesis and caching. In addition, the remote radio heads (RRHs) can also cache some video contents. If the requested content of a specific view is cached in the BBU pool or RRHs, or can be synthesized with the aid of the cached adjacent views, it is unnecessary to request the content from the remote VR video source server. Therefore, the transmission latency and backhaul traffic load for VR services can be decreased. We formulate a hierarchical collaborative caching problem aiming to minimize the transmission latency, which is proved NP-hard. To address the impractical expenses of the offline optimal method, an online MaxMinDistance caching algorithm with low complexity is proposed. Numerical simulation results demonstrate that the proposed caching strategy provides significantly improved cache hit rate, backhaul traffic load, transmission latency, and Quality of Experience (QoE) performances relative to conventional caching strategies. Terahertz (THz) communications are envisioned as a key technology for 6G wireless systems, owing to an unprecedented promised multi-GHz bandwidth. While THz band suffers from huge propagation losses, large arrays of sub-millimeter wavelength antennas can be realized in ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output (UM-MIMO) systems to enhance the received power and overcome the distance limitation. In this paper, a dynamic array-of-subarrays (DAoSA) hybrid precoding architecture is proposed to reduce the power consumption while meeting the data rate requirement in THz UM-MIMO systems. The connections between RF chains and subarrays are intelligently adjusted through a network of switches. First, to solve the intractable DAoSA hybrid precoding problem, element-by-element (EBE) and vectorization-based (VEC) algorithms are derived. Moreover, to determine the connections of the switches, near-optimal progressive stage-by-stage (PSBS), low-complexity alternating-selection (AS) and block-diagonal-search (BDS) algorithms are developed. Extensive simulation results show that both the EBE and VEC algorithms have higher spectral efficiency than existing hybrid precoding algorithms. Furthermore, the power consumption of the DAoSA architecture is substantially lessened, with PSBS, AS and BDS algorithms, respectively. A UAV-aided wireless power transfer and data collection network is studied, where it is assumed that when the harvested energy at the sensor node (SN) cannot surpass its circuit activation threshold or the received data rate at UAV falls below a minimal required rate threshold, the information outage occurs. The closed-form expressions of energy outage probability and rate outage probability are derived at first, and then the overall outage probability and coverage performance of the system are analyzed. Based on which, an optimization problem is formulated to minimize the overall outage probability by optimizing UAV’s elevation angle and the time splitting (TS) factor. Since the problem is non-convex and has no known solution, an alternating optimization (AO)-based algorithm with Golden-section (GS) based linear search method is designed to find the global optimal solution. In order to explore the maximum coverage area of the UAV for a given tolerable outage probability, another optimization problem is also formulated to maximize the coverage range by optimizing UAV’s elevation angle. By using Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions, the closed-form solution of the optimal elevation angle for maximizing the coverage area is derived. Monte Carlo simulations verify the accuracy of the derived closed-form expression of the overall outage probability and the semi-closed-form expressions of the optimum UAV’s elevation angle and TS factor. It shows that there exist a unique optimum elevation angle and the TS factor to achieve the minimum overall outage probability, and significant performance gain can be obtained by using our proposed optimization scheme. Generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM) is one of the new waveforms with several attractive features such as lower out of band radiation, higher spectral efficiency, and better immunity to carrier frequency offset errors as compared with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing. However, it requires receivers with high computational complexity. Among different linear receiver structures, the joint minimum mean square error (joint-MMSE) receiver for GFDM achieves the best bit-error-rate (BER) performance, but it is the most computationally complex linear receiver. In this paper, we present a novel low complexity joint-MMSE receiver. We derive the closed-form expression for the joint-MMSE receiver filter by harnessing circulant properties of the matrices involved in the demodulation process. Amidst different operations involved in the receiver processing, inversion of a positive definite circulant-plus-diagonal matrix is found to be the costliest. Two low-complexity algorithms for the inversion of a positive definite circulant-plus-diagonal matrix are developed to design the low complexity receiver. We also propose a low complexity bias correction to improve BER performance. Our proposed receiver achieves a log-linear order of complexity without any noticeable loss in BER performance. This paper presents low-cost compressors for video display systems, which compress video data to reduce the size of the frame memory in a display panel in a television or a smartphone. The hardware solution exploits the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and 1-D set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) to support the raster-scan processing order in a display system and meet the fixed target compression ratio (CR). However, the compression efficiency and hardware cost often increase in proportion to the block size and thus, designing a compressor with low cost but high fidelity is challenging. This paper proposes a generic partitioned SPIHT algorithm, which achieves a low-cost design for mobile devices by allowing various sizes of partitioned sub-blocks. By taking advantage of DWT decomposition properties, the proposed algorithm partitions a coding block into sub-blocks, each of which can be processed independently. The independent coding operations among multiple sub-blocks allow the size of the hardware buffer to be decreased, by storing the temporary results only for an individual sub-block. However, the proposed sub-block coding slightly decreases the compression efficiency when each sub-block is compressed with the same target CR. To reduce the drop-off in the compression efficiency, the boundary-pixel handling in DWT is exploited and the proposed partitioned SPIHT method adjusts the target CR for each sub-block depending on the potential quality loss. When compared with the previous 1-D design, experimental results show that the hardware gate count and internal memory are reduced by 59.34% and 75%, respectively. By blending the concepts of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, in this paper, a novel hybrid scheme is conceived for supporting diverse services in future wireless systems. Motivating to maximize energy efficiency (EE), the joint resource management of user clustering (UC) and power allocation is investigated for the downlink hybrid NOMA systems. Under two different power consumption cases, the optimal resource allocation (Opt-RA) algorithm is developed with the help of converting the original mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) problem to the tractable decoupled problems. For practical implementation, the heuristic resource allocation (Heur-RA) algorithm is also proposed, and it includes a low-complexity UC algorithm based on the candidate search-and-allocation approach. Our simulation results show that, both the Opt-RA and Heur-RA algorithms achieve significantly higher EE performance than other existing algorithms. Further, the results also prove that, the hybrid NOMA conceived is able to exploit the advantages of NOMA scheme, and is superior to conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) in terms of EE, as well as achieving higher flexibility for system configuration than NOMA. The position and time of mobile agents are essential information for many wireless network applications. In this paper, we propose a single-anchor localization and synchronization scheme of full-duplex (FD) agents in the line-of-sight scenario, where the anchor is equipped with an antenna array. The agents perform inter-node ranging using the FD radios, while the anchor only receives signals transmitted from the agents. We derive the Cramér-Rao lower bounds for the agent positions and clock offsets based on the frames received by the agents and anchor. In particular, the Fisher information matrix for the positions and clock offsets can be decomposed into the information from the measurements of the arrival angles and arrival times. Then, we design the channel estimation algorithm to obtain the arrival angles, arrival times, and signal-to-noise ratios, based on which we further develop the network localization and synchronization algorithms to obtain the agent positions and clock offsets. In this paper, we propose a new coding scheme and establish new bounds on the capacity region for the multi-sender unicast index-coding problem. We revisit existing partitioned distributed composite coding (DCC) proposed by Sadeghi et al. and identify its limitations in the implementation of multi-sender composite coding and in the strategy of sender partitioning. We then propose two new coding components to overcome these limitations and develop a multi-sender cooperative composite coding (CCC). We show that CCC can strictly improve upon partitioned DCC, and is the key to achieve optimality for a number of index-coding instances. The usefulness of CCC and its special cases is illuminated via non-trivial examples, and the capacity region is established for each example. In a high-speed digital communication system, jitter performance plays a crucial role in bit-error rate. It is important to accurately derive each type of jitter as well as total jitter and to identify root causes of jitter by jitter decomposition as a key tool. In this paper, we extend our previously reported algorithm to decompose duty cycle distortion as well as other deterministic jitter components including periodic jitter (PJ), intersymbol interference (ISI), and random jitter (RJ), and describe more detail of this algorithm with extensively simulation and measurements to verify the algorithm. The proposed ISI model only requires the time invariant condition, which is true for almost all systems, while the traditional ISI model is valid only with linear time invariant assumption. Compared to the conventional methods, the proposed jitter decomposition method is able to obtain estimated individual jitter component values with good accuracy by using fewer samples of total jitter data. The portfolio of models offered by car manufacturing groups often includes many variants (i.e., different car models and their versions). With such diversity in car models, variant management becomes a formidable task. Thus, there is an effort to keep the variants as close as possible. This simple requirement forms a big challenge in the area of communication protocols. When several vehicle variants use the same signal, it is often required to simultaneously schedule such a signal in all vehicle variants. Furthermore, new vehicle variants are designed incrementally in such a way as to maintain backward compatibility with the older vehicles. Backward compatibility of time-triggered schedules reduces expenses relating to testing and fine-tuning of the components that interact with physical environment (e.g., electromagnetic compatibility issues). As this requirement provides for using the same platform, it simplifies signal traceability and diagnostics, across different vehicle variants, besides simplifying the reuse of components and tools. This paper proposes an efficient and robust heuristic algorithm, which creates the schedules for internal communication of new vehicle variants. The algorithm provides for variant management by ensuring compatibility among the new variants, besides preserving backward compatibility with the preceding vehicle variants. The proposed method can save about 20% of the bandwidth with respect to the schedule common to all variants. Based on the results of the proposed algorithm, the impact of maintaining compatibility among new variants and of preserving backward compatibility with the preceding variants on the scheduling procedure is examined and discussed. Thanks to the execution time of the algorithm, which is less than one second, the network parameters like the frame length and cycle duration are explored to find their best choice concerning the schedule feasibility. Due to emerging mobile applications and an Internet of Things, data traffic carried by wireless networks has increased dramatically. As a result, maximizing the utilization of the limited network resource is a top priority. To date, there exists a large body of work on the stochastic network utility maximization (NUM) problem. On the one hand, the stochastic NUM problem and its associated solutions have been mainly investigated under the light-tailed (LT) data condition. On the other hand, empirical results show that data delivered by wireless networks is not only large in volume but also highly variable, which can be characterized by heavy-tailed (HT) distributions. Such HT traffic exhibits high burstiness and strong temporal correlations, which are fundamentally different from the behavior of LT traffic. In this paper, first it is shown that the classic stochastic gradient algorithms (SGAs), as effective solutions for stochastic NUM problems, fail to prevent HT traffic flows from aggressively competing with LT flows for limited resources. This leads to unbounded queueing delay for LT flows, which results in network instability. To counter such a challenge, the time-average stochastic gradient routing algorithm is proposed, which prevents competition among HT and LT traffic flows so that utility optimality and network stability can be achieved simultaneously. Moreover, because HT data have unbounded moments, such as mean and variance, it is not feasible to apply the conventional convergence analysis, which assumes the moment boundedness of traffic arrivals. To address this problem, the ordinary differential equation method is adopted to prove that the proposed algorithm still converges even with highly variable HT traffic. Caching in wireless device-to-device (D2D) networks can bring contents closer to users and reduce backhaul traffic. However, the major obstacle to realize cache-enabled D2D communications is the selfish nature of users. In this paper, we propose an incentive mechanism for pricing the contributions of D2D transmitters in cache-enabled D2D-underlaid cellular networks modeled by stochastic geometry. A Stackelberg game is employed to resolve the conflict of interests between the operator and D2D transmitters. The main objective of this game is to reach the Stackelberg equilibrium, in which both the operator and D2D transmitters achieve the maximum profit by designing the optimal incentive price and the optimal caching strategy. We show the existence of the equilibrium and propose a low-complexity algorithm to obtain the near-optimal caching strategy and incentive price. Numerical results verify the existence of the SE and the advantages of the proposed scheme in terms of the utilities for the operator and D2D transmitters over existing caching schemes with fixed incentive. Location-aware wireless networks can provide precise location information in harsh environments, however, which is only possible when all nodes are well-functioning. In this paper, we propose algorithms and analyze the performance limits for both non-cooperative and cooperative localization networks in the presence of ranging outliers. Especially, we show that the localization performance can be boosted by using the cooperative outlier detection scheme. An algorithm based on expectation-maximization is proposed for non-cooperative localization networks, while a variational message passing-based algorithm is proposed for the cooperative counterparts. Performance limits are investigated using Cramér–Rao lower bound. Further inspection on the performance limits confirms the performance gain from the cooperative detection scheme. Stochastic geometric analysis is also carried out to account for the stochastic nature of wireless networks, as well as to provide simpler expressions and additional insights. Simulation results corroborate the analytical results, and show that both of the proposed algorithms are capable of attaining the corresponding performance limits at a significantly reduced computational cost compared with existing algorithms. Terahertz (THz) band communication is envisioned as a key technology to satisfy the increasing demand for ultrabroadband wireless systems, thanks to its ultrabroad bandwidth. Tailored for the unique properties of pulse-based communications in the THz band, two timing acquisition algorithms are proposed and analyzed thoroughly in this paper. First, a low-sampling-rate (LSR) synchronization algorithm is proposed, by extending the theory of sampling signals with finite rate of innovation in the communication context and exploiting the properties of the annihilating filter. The simulation results show that the timing accuracy at an order of ten picoseconds is achievable. In particular, the LSR algorithm has high performance with uniform sampling at $1/20$ of the Nyquist rate when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is high (i.e., greater than 18 dB). Complementary to this, a maximum likelihood (ML) approach for timing acquisition is developed, which searches for the timing offsets by adopting a two-step acquisition procedure based on the ML criterion. The simulation results show that the ML-based algorithm is well suitable in the low SNR case with a half-reduced search space. For further evaluation, the error performance and the resulting bit-error-rate sensitivity to the timing errors in the LSR and the ML algorithms are both analytically and numerically studied. This paper considers a method for improving physical layer security of wireless networks with full-duplex radio. In particular, fast algorithms are developed to compute power allocations in subcarriers, subject to power and rate constraints, to maximize the secrecy capacity of a three-node network consisting of a source, a full-duplex destination, and an eavesdropper. A residual level of radio self-interference channel is considered. The optimal power allocation at the destination is found to be significant especially when its power budget is high. Also studied in this paper are a network with multiple full-duplex destinations and another network with multiple sources. Using the algorithms developed in this paper, we are able to show that a multiuser strategy that optimizes the power distributions among the users (in terms of either the sources or the destinations) can yield a substantial gain of secrecy capacity over a single-user strategy. Optimally designed arrays are used to obtain high gain and directivity. Based on the desired application, different radiation patterns can be generated. These patterns have generally a main beam and some sidelobes. These last ones are undesirable because they can cause electromagnetic interference and compatibility issues. Therefore, sidelobe levels (SLLs) reduction is one of the most important factors for the design of antenna arrays and arrays must be designed in a way to reduce SLLs. In this paper, the optimal design of circular antenna arrays (CAA) for maximum SLLs reduction is investigated using a newly developed metaheuristic that is the most valuable player algorithm. This algorithm is inspired from sport and it has been proven to be an excellent optimization algorithm for mathematical benchmarks. Three cases with different number of arrays are investigated. For comparison purposes, ten other well-known optimization algorithms are used. The design results obtained show the superiority of the proposed algorithm for the optimal design of CAA and for sidelobe reduction over many other algorithms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
